The largest TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) tunnels are typically along modest slopes, but not always. Occasionally high slope angles are required beyond the capabilities of conventional open trough trailing conveyors. A 2019 project required a large TBM to ascend to an incline angle of 25°. A Sandwich Belt high angle conveyor could easily solve the high angle conveying problem but such a system must include all of the features of the conventional trailing conveyor, particularly the ability to extend with the TBM advance. The writer responded to the challenge and developed a TBM trailing Sandwich Belt high angle conveyor with all of the needed features. The invention (U.S.A. patents awarded October, 2021 and November, 2022) however goes beyond the 2019 project requirements and extends to any high angle incline. This writing first presents the broad Sandwich Belt high angle conveyor development, then its use in various construction and tunneling projects prior to this TBM Sandwich Belt trailing conveyor invention. Finally we present the new TBM Trailing Sandwich Belt high angle conveyor with all of its features and implications.

The choice of fan type (axial flow, centrifugal or mixed flow) most suited for a mine ventilation application depends on a number of technical and economic factors. For each project, the relative importance of these factors will vary. It is worthwhile to carry out an assessment on a case by case basis. The paper, by discussing a number of technical and economic factors and their interactions, will provide the ventilation official a methodology to easily and methodically undertake such an assessment.

The development and use of short-lived radioactive tracer methods for the on-stream determination of residence time distributions in large-scale ball mills is described. Tests are reported on a pilot-plant ball mill with 0.43 m diameter and 0.86 m length and on an industrial mill with 1.83 m diameter and 2.74 m length. Tests with different tracer feed sizes indicate that the residence time distributions on both mills are independent of charge particle size. Similar tests are planned for a-large ball mill of 4.57 m diameter and 9.30 m length. No safety problems were encountered in these tests and none are anticipated in tests of the larger mill.

"On August 3, 1888, German Patent No. 43977 entitled ""A Process for the Production of Aluminum Hydroxide"" was issued*. The discovery which led to the patent was made by the Austrian chemist Karl Josef Bayer (1847-1904) (Fig. 1) who was at that time in Russia, and the process became known as the Bayer Process in his honour(1)(2)- The process imediately achieved industrial success, displacing the pyrometallurgical process that had been used until that time to produce alumina. The Bayer Process involved the pressure leaching of bauxite with NaOH solution to obtain sodium aluminate solution from which aluminum hydroxide was precipitated by seeding. Today bauxite is not only the principal source of aluminum but also of gallium, both metals being effectively recovered by the Bayer Process. The purpose of this paper is to outline the historical background of this discovery and its importance to hydrometallurgy."

The National Safety Competition was inaugurated in 1925 by the Bureau o1 Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, in cooperation With the Explosives Engineer. In the first nationwide contest, 210 mines and quarries were enrolled. In 1962, the thirty-eighth anniversary of the competition, 910 mines and quarries were enrolled. These participating plants were worked a total of 133,292,989 man-hours. Of the enrolled plants, 415 achieved injury-free operations tar the year, the largest number of perfect safety records in the history of the contest. In 1961 and 1962, the National Safety Competition was conducted and sponsored by the Bureau of Mines. In January 1963, the American Mining Congress became a cosponsor and participated with the Bureau in the award activities related to the 1962 contest. The basic purpose of the competition is to stimulate employees to work safely and too give impetus to the building of better accident-prevention programs. A well-designed and efficient safety program helps a company economically by cutting costs, preventing damage to equipment and materials, and reducing nonproductive delays. An effective safety program benefits the employee more directly because his injuries cause personal suffering, lost time, and lower living standards for his family. Since both have much to gain, management and workers should cooperate closely to eliminate disabling work injuries. The greater contest participation and the larger number of perfect safety records indicate increasing safety consciousness on the part of management and employees.

This paper describes support of excavation (SOE) design and construction for three large diameter shafts excavated through glacial soil and controlled blasting in complex sedimentary rock formations. SOE in soil consists of unreinforced secant pile rings designed to resist lateral pressure in circumferential compression, eliminating costly steel core beam reinforcing. Controlled blasting at the shafts, adits, and tunnels in densely populated neighborhoods requires managing risks to the public, buildings, and utilities. Controlled blasting approaches limited adverse impacts to receptors nearby while achieving adequate production and fragmentation. A site-specific observational approach was used to adjust blasting parameters, limiting the impact on local stakeholders while maintaining daily progress and managing overbreak.

Over the last few years at Glencore’s Mount Isa Copper Operations (MICO) mining conditions have become increasingly challenging through lower head grades and higher work indices. MICO has had great success improving operating efficiencies and increasing productivity through focusing on technology, innovation and operational discipline. The recent implementation of the Mine Site Technologies (MST) ImPact System has supported the continued transformation of the MICO operations through improved personnel safety and direct measurement of productivity. The ImPact System has implemented new safety systems such as the heavy vehicle proximity detection system, underground personnel tracking system and emergency evacuation dashboards improving the overall safety of the workforce. The ImPact System has facilitated productivity improvements via real-time equipment and personnel monitoring, and the implementation of exception reporting (personnel productivity), KPI reports and production dashboards, and transparent reports highlighting developing maintenance issues.This paper discusses the components of the ImPact System, the current installation at MICO, and critically analyses the implementation processes and right sizing of the system to meet the needs of the business today and into the future.CITATION:Bullock, J, Kent, D and Wilkinson, M, 2017. Um estudo de viabilidade econômica deve considerar parâmetros e incertezas inerentes a um projeto para produzir resultados econômicos consistentes, fornecendo ao investidor uma ferramenta de tomada de decisão. O presente estudo objetivou efetuar inicialmente a avaliação econômica convencional do cenário realista de uma mineração de agregados em fase de implantação localizada em Pernambuco, cujo Valor Presente Líquido (VPL) obtido foi R$ 24.006.309,20, o que representa um resultado positivo. Através da metodologia de Monte Carlo foi efetuada uma análise de risco considerando incertezas em 100.000 cenários, nos quais nove variáveis assumiram valores estocásticos dentro dos domínios definidos, produzindo assim uma distribuição estatística do VPL ao invés de um único número, sendo ainda efetuada uma análise de sensibilidade para identificar e quantificar as variáveis que mais impactam no resultado da avaliação. Por fim, os dois fatores mais influentes identificados na análise de sensibilidade inicial foram isolados e submetidos a uma nova análise de risco em outros 100.000 cenários. Foi concluído que o projeto é economicamente viável e que a probabilidade de gerar lucro aos investidores é de 99,77%, embora a probabilidade do VPL ser igual ou maior que o previsto pelo método convencional seja de 49,98%.

"While distribution of air currents to working faces is a necessity in coal mines, especially those having explosive gas, advancing faces in metal mines rarely have circulating air other than the ordinarily inadequate amount supplied through the compressed air system. Even where comparatively large quantities of air pass through main mine shafts and levels. whether the circulation is actuated by fans or by natural ventilation, only occasionally can a metal mine be found where any considerable percentage of the ""blind ends"" has circulating air of sufficient velocity to be measured by an anemometer or even be discerned by deflection of flame of candle, or of acetylene lamp; and unfortunately these ""blind ends"" include nearly all of the places from which rock is taken.During several years study of metal-mine ventilation in various mining districts of the United States, it has been found that in some mines many of the workers in ""blind ends"" practically continually breathe air with 0.02 to 0.04 per cent of CO gas from unremoved fumes from explosives; in other mines CO2 chiefly from timber decay and breathing of men, is so high that a candle will not burn though usually the acetylene lamp will, hence oxygen is below 17 per cent but above 12 per cent; in some regions CO2 from strata fills the entire mine forcing cessation of work; in other mines in dead ends, gases such as nitrogen, H2S, SO2, etc., are found under some conditions. In many regions with hot rock or water (especially in deep workings) men in blind ends must work with little or no circulation, in air above SO degrees F. and even above 90 degrees, relative humidity only too frequently being around 100 per cent; in other regions workers in blind ends in practically ""dead"" air must continually breathe enormous quantities of finely divided rock dusts. All of the above conditions are decidedly harmful to health and prevent the worker from delivering anything approaching an adequate quantity of work, and in addition, some of these conditions have direct or indirect effect in bringing about definite increase of accidents; all of the above mentioned bad conditions in ""blind ends"" in metal mines as well as their ill effects, are remediable by providing at those places adequate quantities of fresh circulating air."

Part of the work of the Precious Metals Section is to conduct oretesting experiments on ores selected as representative of various mining districts or areas . The projects are authorized by the Metallurgical Division , and only those ores in which gold and silver or gold or silver constitute an essential part of the total values are assigned to the Precious Metals Section . Such ores include those containing the precious metals only as commercially important ingredients , as well as those containing base metals such as copper , lead , and zinc along with the gold and silver . In many instances the "ore " may be a tailing product of a grade good enough to warrant retreatment , or a concentrate for which it is desirable to develop a method of treatment to avoid the expense of shipment to a smelter . It is evident that in general the greater part of this ore - testing work is done according to standard testing procedure , such as cyanidation, amalgamation, gravity - concentration , and flotation , or a combination of these methods . The standard methods of conducting such tests have been outlined in previous reports of ore - testing studies . However , since the inauguration of this oretesting program 6 years ago , the ores submitted under authorization have become increasingly more refractory to simple methods of treatment. Consequently, a considerable number of the projects completed during the fiscal year 1941 have required an unusual amount of work and in some instances have developed into real research problems . "INTRODUCTION The investigation of the general hazards of combustible gases and vapors in manholes owned by the Edison Electric Illuminating Co. and the study of methods for eliminating these hazards, conducted by the Bureau of Mines, the Edison Electric Illuminating Co. of Boston, and the Boston Consolidated Gas Co. since 1929, was continued during 1933.From May and through December 1933 these tests were supplemented by a study of the manholes of the New England Telephone & Telegraph Co. The test crew was under the direct supervision of John Campbell, superintendent of the Special Service Department of the Edison Electric Illuminating Co., and F. M. Goodwin, vice president of the Boston Consol¬idated Gas Co.The procedure of sampling manhole atmospheres and of shipping the samples to Pittsburgh was the same as that used heretofore. In previous reports the relative explosibility of the samples was calculated by adding the percentages of the illuminants, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, methane, and ethane, dividing the total by 6.5, and multiplying by 100. Experience has shown that the factor 6.0 is more nearly correct; therefore, this has been used in calculating the relative explosibility of all the samples listed in appendix A and B of this report. "The PFK FeNi Smelter was re-commissioned by Solway Resources in 2002, ending a long period of economic decline in the adjacent town. In 2009 Hatch was retained to design, supply and install a custom furnace crucible that would accommodate a capacity increase from 34 MW to 40 MW and increase campaign life through binding and cooling technologies, as part of ongoing improvement efforts. The involvement of PFK personnel was critical to the successful integration of the new furnace technology with the existing process and operational practice. The furnace upgrade project was completed in 18 months during 2010 – 2011. Since start-up, the furnace has exceeded production expectations, operating successfully at 42 MW.INTRODUCTIONAfter ceasing operations in the 1990’s, the Pobuzhsky Ferronickel Combine (PFK), located in central Ukraine, was stripped of useful equipment and deteriorated while dormant. The surrounding town experienced a period of economic decline throughout the 1990’s. Solway Industries purchased the complex in 2002 and began a systematic incremental program to re-commission the smelter using both local expertise and specialists from other parts of the former Soviet Union. This led to the re-birth of PFK as a successful toll-smelting complex, and a renaissance for the surrounding economy.As part of the continuing improvement program, PFK approached Hatch in 2009 to study the possibility of a capacity expansion from 34 MW to 40 MW. It was decided, based on the results of the study, to design and install a custom furnace crucible integrating the unique PFK FeNi process with modern Hatch furnace technology. This novel approach had many benefits, including: maximum re-use of existing furnace components (off-gas, feed equipment and transformers), minimal impact on upstream and downstream equipment and building structure, and the retention of a familiar operating regime. The latter was a key factor in the success of the project, as it allowed the extensive operating expertise of the PFK staff to remain highly relevant to the upgraded furnace. This led to minimized capital investment, a rapid start-up and no significant operational challenges switching over to the new equipment incorporating Hatch furnace technology."

The central question concerning the health risks associated with mining and processing of taconite ores in the Eastern Mesabi Range is ??does asbestos, of any variety, occur within the gangue mineral population?? Free silica in the form of quartz does exist in the taconite, but silicosis has been relegated to a secondary issue. The focus has shifted to the asbestos minerals and the malignancies that might occur following low-level exposure to dust. Although mineral fibers do exist in the Mesabi taconite ores, Ross, Nolan and Nord conclude ??no asbestos?, as explained in their contribution ??The Search for Asbestos within the Peter Mitchell Taconite Iron Ore Mine, near Babbitt, Minnesota?. Their area of study is located in the eastern Mesabi Range. It is here that the tectonic and metamorphic effects associated with the intrusion of the Duluth Gabbro have been profound. A variety of amphibole minerals have developed as a result of these geological events, some with names recognized within the US Asbestos Standard. The issue tackled by the authors is whether or not these amphiboles are present in the mine and if so whether or not they are asbestiform in habit.

Fly ash is a by-product from coal-fired power stations that is captured from the exhaust gas stream by electrostatic precipitators (ESPs) or bag houses. It is mainly derived from the inorganic components in coal but also contains residual carbon from unburnt fuel (measured as LOI). In the past, nearly all fly ash was sent to landfills or tailings ponds by power generators but this trend is quickly changing due to landfill costs, sustainability requirements and the inherent value in correctly processed fly ash. The main property that makes fly ash suitable for recycling is its use as a pozzolan. Pozzolans exhibit cementitious properties that make them suitable for partial cement replacement, and that can have beneficial properties for concrete mix designs. Fly ash can be used to replace up to a third of the of the Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) requirement. Suitable fly ash nearly always requires the removal of the less reactive coarser fraction from the finer fraction. Due to the pozzolanic nature of fly ash, it must be processed dry and separation is normally required at 45 micron. In response to the increasing demand from a range of dry classification applications, Metso purchased an established air classification technology suitable for both mining and construction applications. The classifiers intelligent design efficiently utilizes the air flow which keeps power requirements low whilst including a scrubbing/recirculating function within the classifier that allows extremely efficient separations even at very fine sizes. This technology is of global interest to Fly Ash processors, but should be of particular interest in India which is both the second largest cement producer in the world as well as producing 80% of its power from thermal sources. This paper is intended to give a brief overview of fly ash and requirements for use as a pozzolan, air classification of fly ash and a case study from an established and experienced fly ash producer. "The support quality of bolts in deep roadways is one of the important factors for efficient and safe coal production. A new kind of non-destructive testing technique and equipment was used to monitor the axial bolt load in real time in deep roadways. Based on the test results, the working status of bolt support in deep roadways was evaluated. The research results show that the variation characteristics of axial bolt load is consistent with the distribution characteristics of rock pressure no matter whether it is in the initial support stage or mining disturbance stage. The axial load of bolts located 20m outby the development face has an overall rising trend within 3-5 days after installation. Within a certain distance in the front abutment pressure zone in front of the face, the axial bolt load increases with the advance of coal extraction. When coal and rock in the abutment pressure zone yield, the axial bolt load is dropped correspondingly. This kind of non-destructive testing technique provides an advanced means of detection and evaluation on bolt support quality.INTRODUCTIONMany coal seams more than 800m deep are being mined in eastern China. Roadways of large cross-section are being developed in coal seams more than 600m deep in western China (Kang et al. 2014). Moreover, these roadways are commonly supported by roof bolts and have encountered many support problems, including soft rock strata, intense mining disturbance, and abnormal tectonic stress. The stability of its surrounding rocks is difficult to maintain, the roof bolt even fails before mining (Shen 2014; Jiang et al. 2015). Therefore, it is very important to develop an effective method to detect the bolt quality in real time and evaluate the bolt's safety status.During installation of roof bolt, the installation quality is heavily affected by installation equipment and tools, field conditions, and operators' skills (Li et al. 2005; Shan 2009). The anchorage length will be shorter than the designed one if the resin cartridges are pushed to the bottom of excessively long drill hole and stay there without being shredded and mixed. The support function of the bolt would be weakened by the shorter anchorage length."

The steadily increasing interest in high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) as a legitimate alternative comminution technology for hard rock applications has led to a proportional increase in the demand for trade-off studies comparing HPGR with more established approaches, typically SAG-based but including AG and stage-crushing designs. The primary trade-off is between a) the higher capital cost typically incurred with HPGR-based designs and b) the higher operating costs of the more traditional technologies. However, if, through circuit design innovation, the capital cost penalty of HPGR circuits could be eliminated or reversed, then the need for trade-off studies would diminish.

"The success or failure of coal mining operations in Western Canada may hinge on the ability to extract thick coal under a variety of geological and mining circumstances and conditions. The paper presents, in who-where, what- how pattern, the current status of undergrounud mining of thick coal seams based on a review of foreign technical literature. The underground production of coal from what are considered to be thick seams is over 300 million tons per year. Methods of mining have evolved, through years of trials and tribulations, capable of meeting the requirements of a modern mine: high bulk outputs from a limited number of mining faces by concentrating in the horizontal (mechanization) and in the vertical (increased working lift)."
