E DUCATION for the mineral industry was at first a single comprehensive curriculum, but it was early recognized that the main basis of mining is physics, while that of metallurgy is chemistry. The first school to offer curricula leading to degrees in mineral industry education in the United States (1853) had separate ones in mining and metallurgy. The Columbia School of Mines (the first really successful one) had only a single curriculum when it opened in 1864, but within a few years had so reorganized its work that it offered curricula in mining, metallurgy, geology, chemistry, and civil engineering. Interest in the metallurgy or geology curricula was slight at first, and for the next 30 years the great majority of Columbia students took the mining curriculum, probably partly because it contained nearly as much geology as the geology curriculum, practically all the metallurgy, and most of the chemistry, and partly because of the degree awarded for it. Other schools kept their mining curricula equally broad, and as late as 1900-1910 men were graduating as mining engineers who were practically as well prepared to make geology or metallurgy their life work, as they were for mining. Gradually, however, the subject matter of mining geology and metallurgy became so enriched through research and development that separate curricula in them became worth while; their progressive development is the subject of another chapter. Mining curricula also began to be somewhat diversified, and schools in areas where coal mining was of outstanding importance began to offer options in coal mining, the earlier curricula having been chiefly aimed at metal mining. The petroleum industry began its meteoric rise about the same time as mineral instruction in this country, but little more of applied science attended its birth than had attended such ancient practical arts as copper and iron

In-1992, the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral investigation of the Anderson Mountain study area, including RARE II area 4-942, in Lemhi County, Idaho. The 7,340-ha study area lies within the Salmon National Forest about one kilometer north of the old mining town of Gibbonsville (pop.: 100). The eastern boundary of the study area is formed by the crest of the Bitterroot Range. The crest also serves as the continental Divide, and as the border between Idaho and Montana. The study area lies within the Gibbonsville Mining District, an important past producer of gold from lode and placer deposits. Since the 1870's, several hundred claims for both types have been located in the study area. Thirty-six current (1992) lode claims and two patented claim groups (one lode and one placer) are wholly or partially in the study area. No placer claims are current. In all, twenty-seven lode and five placer properties in and adjacent to the study area were investigated. Workings on the properties included 2 caved shafts; 36 caved adits; 8 open adits; 120 small pits, cuts, and trenches; and 4 large dozed cuts.

MINING is one of the major industries of the Rocky Mountain region and since the United States became involved in the present World War, all mines have been called upon by the Government for the maximum production of the strategic metals necessary. Operating under the most adverse conditions, such as priority requirements, slow delivery of necessary material and equipment, labor shortages, and freezing of all wages, which still permitted some industries to pay higher rates than were allowable in the mines, thereby drawing labor from the mines; and the United States Employment Service continually giving mine labor certificates of availability; these and many other problems made mine operation particularly difficult. Yet, in spite of these obstacles, the mining industry, either through its own resources or through Government subsidies in the form of loans or premium prices for strategic metal, have and still are making an all-out effort to meet Government demands. They, without question, have played a major role in assisting the war effort.

Buckeye Lake Dam was substantially remediated between 2015 and 2018 as a result of unacceptable dam safety performance. A permanent seepage cutoff, consisting primarily of a soil mixed cutoff wall (SMCW) with occasional sections of steel sheet piling, was constructed along the dam alignment. Closures were required at the terminus of the soil mix elements with existing structures or coffer cells, and at locations where new sheet piling was constructed parallel to the new soil mixed cutoff wall, creating a short circuit seepage path. The original proposed design to construct these closures included permeation grouting methods with chemical grouts. However, a combination of multiple chemical grout types, multiple grout pipes, and an extensive post-grouting verification program was required to ensure the design intent was achieved. After award of the project, the specialty grouting contractor elected to evaluate jet grouting as an alternative closure construction method. The advantages of the jet grouting option offered potential schedule and cost savings to the project as well as a superior product for seepage reduction, given the mixed soil conditions at the site. This paper presents an examination of the site conditions and project goals for the construction of the proposed closure elements for the rehabilitation of Buckeye Lake Dam. Descriptions of the original and alternative treatment methods are provided, with expected performance results. A description of the relative strengths and deficiencies of each method, as well as the feasibility and constructability of each method is provided. The implementation of the jet grouting program is presented, including a discussion of the design elements, quality control test methods, movement monitoring, and verification test methods. This paper also examines the risks associated with jet grouting and how those risks were mitigated during the grouting operations. HISTORY Buckeye Lake is situated approximately 28 miles east of Columbus, Ohio and is managed and operated by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) as part of the Ohio State Parks system. The lake is impounded by natural features that exist along the south and east banks of the reservoir, and by the embankment structure constructed along the north and west banks of the reservoir (see Fig. 1). The reservoir site was originally a natural swamp and the original purpose of the constructed dam and reservoir was to provide water to the Ohio and Erie Canal System. Several dam alignments and configurations were constructed during its early history; however, the original embankment is comprised of homogeneous earthen fill. The embankment is 15 ft (4.6 m) high and extends 4.1 miles (6.6 km) from the North Shore abutment along the east, continuing to the abutment at Lieb’s Island to the West. Several spillway and outlet structures exist along the embankment alignment. Most noteworthy are Seller’s Spillway and Amil Spillway. Fig. 2 is a Plan View of the embankment alignment and appurtenant structures at Buckeye Lake.

Placing a detonating explosive inside a volume of rock is an efficient method of rock fragmentation. The explosion generates internal tensile stresses in the rock, and because rock is a brittle material, this brings about crack propagation and fragmentation far more efficiently than does application of explosive on the surface. To get the explosive inside, we drill a pattern of boreholes and charge the explosive into the holes. This is really the one and only purpose of making blastholes in mining: to give access for the explosive to the interior of the rock. No matter how big and expensive a drilling jumbo we stand up in front of a rock face, and no matter how many boreholes we let it drill, the rock does not fall apart by itself without blasting. It is the action of the explosive in the boreholes that does it. When we consider that we need a pound or two of explosive for every cubic yard of rock to be fragmented, and a pint of borehole volume for each pound of explosive, we see that the process of blasthole charging is an important element in the whole process of rock blasting.

"Energy efficiency in mining and minerals processing forms part of Mintek’s long-term research strategy which includes a specific programme designed at overcoming the challenges faced by the South African pyrometallurgy industry.The electric smelting industry is currently severely constrained by the global economic downturn as well as by the availability and increasing cost of electricity. Efficient utilisation of electricity through energy recovery systems and improved smelting process flowsheets can significantly contribute towards creating sustainable operations.Apart from efficient engineering design and solid process control, smelting of either cold or hot pre-reduced ores has been shown to decrease furnace electricity consumption by more than 40%. Various methods of solid-state reduction tests have been carried out at Mintek in order to select the most appropriate process option in the context of the South African industry. This paper summarises a subset of the results obtained, specifically on pre-reduction tests done on South African chromite and manganese ore pellets.In this set of tests, it was found that the use of an organic binder, together with B2O3 as flux, promotes manganese ore pre-reduction, but retards the pre-reduction of chromite. By pre-reducing the manganese ore feed, significant cost savings can be achieved in subsequent smelting processes and there is potential to minimise manganese losses as a result of fuming, due to possible lower operating temperatures."

The effectiveness of 0.01 pct. molybdenum, as ammonium molybdate impregnated on coal, on the hydrogenation of a high-volatile bituminous C coal at 8,000 p.s.i.g. and 460° to 480° C. has been studied in a pilot plant by the Federal Bureau of Mines. Under these conditions, the Bureau obtained 98 to 99 pct. conversion5/ of coal to liquids and gases at throughputs of 29 to 101 lb. of m.a.f. coal per cubic foot of reaction space per hour. At 460° C. the indicated yield of oil ranged from 63 pct. (based on m.a.f. coal) at a throughput of 35 lb./c.f.h. (pounds per cubic foot per hour) to 68.5 pct. at a throughput of 58 lb./c.f.h., and the yield of gaseous hydro-carbons ranged from 25.5 to 19 pct. at the same throughputs. The maximum measured yield of oil boiling under 325° C. was 47 pct.

"There are many physical and operational obstacles in pipelines that make the passage of inspection robots impossible including:•,Small radius bends•,Low operating pressure•,Plug valves•,Large changes in pipe size•,No permanent access to the pipeline.The inspection of unpiggable pipelines requires the marriage of a highly agile robotic platform with NDE sensor technology operating as an integrated system. Foster-Miller and GE/PII are developing a robot that is essentially a battery powered, train-like platform. Both front and rear tractors propel the train in either the downstream or upstream direction. Like a train, the platform includes additional ""cars"" to carry the required payloads. The cars are used for various purposes including the NDE sensor module(s), the power supply, and data acquisition/storage components. The robot is designed with a slender aspect ratio and the ability to change shape as required by the physical obstacle presenting itself. The MFL sensor module must also morph itself through the physical obstacles, and thus, will require some level of segmentation. The segmented MFL magnetizers and transformable sensor module represent a major advance in the science of sensor technology and pipeline inspection."

Double-stack trains in the United States date back to the early 1980s, starting about the time deregulation of the rail industry occurred. Freight rail became increasingly more competitive to trucking and barge or ship, and led to major investments in railroad infrastructure. Since most railroad tunnels in the United States were constructed between 1880 and 1930, they were not built tall enough to accommodate modern double-stack intermodal railcars. Therefore, as double-stack trains became the norm, existing tunnels became bottlenecks, and railroads wanted the tunnels made larger without impacting traffic. This need to increase the clearance while not impacting rail traffic launched a very specialised industry: the design and construction of replacement lining systems in existing tunnels.Several large multitunnel railroad clearance improvement projects have been completed in the country in the last decade, and they have all been done under ‘live track’ conditions. Live track conditions consist of work windows, often anywhere from four to 12 hours, that are provided to the contractor to complete the construction work. By the end of each work window, the tunnel must be secured so that the railroad can run trains.In addition to improving the clearance, these projects provided the railroads with an opportunity to improve the general condition of the tunnels, including structural, seepage, drainage and icing conditions. This paper discusses the design considerations, tunnel assessments and construction methods used for these live track railroad tunnel projects. Seepage and drainage improvements that were incorporated into the clearance improvement projects are also discussed.CITATION:Schrank, J, 2014. "In cooperation with The Edison Electric Illuminating Co. of Boston, Mass., a survey was conducted in 1929 and 1930 by the United States Bureau of Mines to determine the general hazards of combustible gases and vapors in manholes and other underground openings owned by this company. The territory served approximates 650 square miles and includes 46 cities and towns. The transmission and distribution systems are on overhead construction and underground wires and cables run in underground conduits and manholes. There are 17,000 manholes on the system, and also an area in Boston proper served by the Edison tube system. These conduits and manholes are laid in various types of streets from the most modern type of cement roadbed to the older type of loose macadam. The conditions as found could be considered as typical of any public utility in the electric-light and power field. The survey extended over a period of about a year beginning in June, 1929, and ending in July, 1930, and during this time 1,765 different manholes were tested and a total of 4,068 tests were made.Previous to starting the actual survey, one of the writers, G. W. Jones, spent considerable time in Boston determining the best methods of practical· test procedure. In this work cooperation was given by John Campbell, superintendent, special service department, who for a number of years has been making a study of explosions in underground street areas and preventive measures in Boston and various cities.After this preliminary investigation the tests were continued by employees of the Edisun Company. Copies of all records of tests were forwarded to the United States Bureau of Mines Pittsburgh Experiment Station so that the writers were in close touch with the progress of the survey, and changes could be made in the test procedure whenever deemed necessary."

Comprehensive field tests were made by the Federal Bureau of Hines at the Conda open pit mine near Soda Springs, Idaho, to determine whether surface geophysical techniques could be used to detect and delineate faults in phosphate deposits. The tests included seismic refraction, magnetometry, electrical resistivity, and airborne photography. Of the several geophysical techniques tested in the field, horizontal resistivity profiling was the most effective method for diagnosing faults. The method is quick, inexpensive, accurate, and can be easily used by mining company personnel to detect and delineate faults.

This paper describes a generic approach to analysing the environmental and economic performance of a global mineral/metal value chain, with the express view of improving the quality of prospective decision-making within the industry in order to ensure more sustainable outcomes. The starting point for this analysis is the development of a global stocks flows and transformations model, for the metal of interest. Any aspect of the value chain, e.g. “metals refining, “goods manufacture”, “use and disposal”, can be assessed, either relative to other stages in the value chain, or in more detail by focusing on the technologies used within that stage. The use of this model as a decision support tool is explored here for the case of copper. Both primary and secondary production routes are enumerated, covering a range of processes, for seven distinct geographic regions round the globe. The value of the modelling approach is explored for different energy mixes. In particular, the case study examines the impact of increased recycling on the (re) distribution of global and regional environmental impacts for technologies-in-place in these different regions.

The investigation of mine shafts and underground workings at Leadville, Colo., was started in May 1946 and recessed in November 3, 1946. Thirty-eight shafts and connecting accessible underground workings, comprising about a third of the accessible shafts in the district, were investigated. The Leadville district, a former important producer of lead and zinc, was considered by the Bureau of Mines to be capable of bolstering 'the waning domestic output of .these important metal. Accordingly, the investigation was initiated for the purpose of. .obtaining more definite data on sulfide and oxide reserves, evidence to justify completion of the Leadville drainage tunnel, representative large samples of the complex oxidized and mixed ores for testing to determine methods, beneficiation factual data to be supplied to property owners in order to stimulate production, and to determine the more favorable areas for development by the Bureau.

Cable bolt supports are becoming an important ground control technique in underground mines in the United States and Canada. They show great versatility and are adaptable for use with many mining techniques, they have high load-carrying capacities, they can be installed in small areas with low roots, and they are cost effective. Investigators in a number of research institutes in North America have conducted studies to assess the material and support properties of cable bolts, evaluate their support capabilities under various mining conditions, and provide design criteria for using cable bolt supports as roof control systems under varying mining conditions. While conducting these studies, personnel have collected important information on the history, application, performance, and economics of these supports. This U.S. Bureau of Mines report documents this information so that ground control personnel unfamiliar with cable bolt supports can gain an understanding and appreciation of their use. A comprehensive bibliography of technical information on cable bolt supports was selected by the authors and is also presented.

"The geology and origins of volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits in the Abitibi belt of northwestern Quebec have been the subject of discussion since the discovery of the Horne orebodies in Noranda in 1923.The present Noranda version of the VMS model characterizes the ideal deposit as a stratabound, base-metal accumulation that is in close spatial relationship with hydrothermal alteration and stockwork zones, felsic lava domes, coarse phreatic-pyroclastic breccias, and subvolcanic intrusions that characterize vent- and proximal{acies submarine volcanic environments. Deposits tend to occur in a favorable stratigraphic interval within a mining camp, and this is well-documented in the Rouyn-Noranda and Matagami camps.However, in recent years many VMS deposits have been shown to deviate from the ideal Noranda-type. For example, the Ansi/ deposit is characterized by sulphide-bearing alteration zones that extend far above the massive sulfide lenses, and by abundant magnetite immediately underlying massive sulfide. The Horne deposit appears to lack the typical chloritic alteration pipe underlying the massive sulfide lenses, as well as laterally-equivalent exhalite horizons. The Horne and Quemont deposits, besides being the two giants of the camp, are particularly rich in gold, whereas others, such as WaiteAmulet and Millenbach, have low gold values. Finally, some deposits in the Noranda camp, such as the Ansil, Corbet and Mobrun mines, are outside the favorable stratigraphic interval. Therefore, it would appear that part of the key to renewing base metal reserves in northwestern Quebec is the use of evolving descriptive-genetic models that incorporate geological variations like those cited above."

"Growing interest in the developing technique of improving the dewatering of filter cakes by the direct application of steam has been apparent during the past year. A number of applications to iron and base-metal concentrates are under study, and intensive work continues on applications to coal cleaning.This paper presents and discusses the data presently available. The effects of material characteristics and operating variables on final cake moisture are examined. Although it is not yet possible to answer all questions regarding the applicability of the technique to specific problems from general data correlations, it is found that the use of these in con-junction with empirical data derived from properly conducted laboratory tests does yield reliable conclusions.Emphasis is placed on the basic economics of the process, and on de-sign criteria for ""steam drying"" filter stations, as applied particularly to metallurgical concentrates. Examples of the use of laboratory tests to solve application problems are given."

I refer to the remark- able and-to us of the Education Di- vision-most gratifying growth which is taking place in Institute consciousness regarding its responsibility for the recruitment and adequate training of student personnel and for the successful bridging of the difficult gap between graduation and achievement of professional status. Outstanding in this respect is President Jackling's interest in the students and schools of the mineral industry. THE National Coal Association held its annual meeting at Cleveland on Nov. 14-16, 1928, having changed the time from the spring to the autumn to avoid conflict with the great number of meetings ordinarily held in the spring. Institute members were \\yell to the fore in its activities, the president, E. C. Mahan (who was reelected for another term!, C. E. Bockus, treasurer, and the secretary, H. L. Gancly, being A. I. M. E. members, as are many of the directors. At the first session, our past president, S. A. Taylor, presented a 1;aper which is reprinted in part herewith. At the Thurs- day session W. D. Brennan presided, Walter Barllum led the discussion on membership, and Otis Mouser led the discussion on taxation. In the afternoon, J. P. Williams, Jr., led the discussion on research. Rembrandt Peale presided at the annual dinner in the evening. At the concluding session on Friday resolutions were adopted, among them one in which the Association "reaffirms its attitude toward proposed Federal legislation affecting the bituminous coal industry by saying that it opposes legislation which would seek to single out this industry for regulatory action. This particularly applies to such bills as S4490."

The purpose of this paper is to outline a recent development in ground fault protection. The paper deals with the A problems of both grounded and ungrounded systems, with regard to hazards to personnel and equipment, and shows that the increased sensitivity and speed of operation of this new detector results in increased safety to personnel and reduced stresses on equipment, and permits the detection of leakage currents before they become serious faults. The detector can be applied to all distribution systems, either A.C. or D.C., up to 15 kv., and the detector itself can be tested at regular intervals without interrupting line circuits. T HERE is always controversy among engineers as to whether distribution systems should be grounded or ungrounded. There are many experi-enced engineers on both sides of this controversy, and each have valid reasons for their choice
