A reasonably clear and broad definition of occupational disease as originated by the Supreme Court of Ohio is: "A disease contracted in the usual and ordinary course of events which from the common experience of humanity is known to be incident to a particular employment." An ailment does not become an occupational disease simply because it is contracted on the employer's premises. It must be one that is commonly regarded as natural to, inherent in, and concomitant of the work in question. The important distinction between accidental-traumatic injuries and occupational-disease injuries is that accidents occur at specific times, ordinarily are discovered readily, and usually leave no question as to the particular employer it whose development the accident occurred. On the other hand, occupational diseases may develop slowly, unknown to the employer and employee until disability occurs, and the injuries sustained are continuing disabilities over an extended period of time and may be incurred while the employee is working for one of several employers.

The economics of the asbestos mining industry of Canada, and the physical and chemical characteristics of asbestos fibre, as well as exploration, mining, milling and quality control methods, have been described by several authors in the past few years. The scope of this presentation is to survey the application of asbestos fibres in the major product groups of the construction industry in North America. Principal categories considered include flooring materials, asbestos-cement pipes and building products, high-temperature insulation, textiles, saturated asbestos felts and asphalt com pounds. During 1962, the asbestos mining industry of Canada produced an estimated 1.3 million tons of chrysotile fibre grades, and production capacity is expanding. The market demand for chrysotile fibre, on this continent, has been in the order of 50 per cent of the production volume. The asbestos industry is dependent for growth on the construction industry. Product research is active in finding new uses for asbestos fibre; some of the new developments are presented, including the use of short-fibre asbestos grades for extending the life of asphalt pavement.

The difficulty in material characterization and the erratic response of cemented soil layers, such as caliche in the Las Vegas valley, creates challenges for practicing engineers to reliably predict the response of deep foundations. The focus of this paper is the numerical prediction of axial response in drilled shaft foundations, which are commonly used in infrastructure projects (i.e., bridges and tall buildings) in Las Vegas, NV. The prevalence of hard caliche layers with variation in the degree of cementation add to the complication in numerical modeling. In this study, the applicability of two existing t-z models, developed for Florida limestone and soft rock, was evaluated based on numerical simulations of three bi-directional load tests conducted at caliche-dominant sites. The corresponding top-down load tests were also simulated for further assessment. A MATLAB-based finite-difference program, NVShaft, has been used to implement the mentioned t-z models in axial load analysis. Complexity originating from drilled shaft construction and the interaction with caliche during one axial load test resulted in a stiffer predicted response compared to measure data. For the other two load tests, both t-z models produced comparable load-displacement responses. It was observed that the t-z model for Florida limestone predicted relatively stiffer responses and higher drilled shaft capacity.

WHEN the Cushing field flooded the oil market in 1914 and 1915 with a daily output equal to nearly one-third of the world's production, the situation was soon corrected by increased consumption, and the price of crude oil rose from 45 c. per barrel in, February 1915 to $1.10 in December of the same year-the highest price paid in the Mid-Continent field up to that time. The intensive search for oil during the following seven years failed to disclose a single new ,field equal to Cushing, and many observers concluded that the rapidly increasing number of wells contributing to the world's output, each declining roughly 20 per cent. a year, combined with the rapidly increasing con¬sumption of petroleum, made it highly improbable that any field would; be found again sufficiently large to seri¬ously affect the oil market. That seven exceptional fields should then be discovered simultaneously is a remarkable coincidence. Long Beach, Santa Fe Springs, and Powell, each exceeded Cushing in daily output and reached the apex of their production during a year when Burbank, Tonkawa, - Smackover and Huntington Beach each contributed several times the daily output of the average new pool. This unexpected and tremendous flood of flush production could only have the effect of depressing price and greatly adding to stocks throughout the country. It was particularly depressing in the Mid-Continent as the new oil from California proved of attractive refining grade and because of cheap transportation by water easily undersold Oklahoma crude in the eastern markets.

The three types of specifications which are used for micropile work are: ? Performance Specifications: The contractor is permitted control over certain design and/or construction procedures but must demonstrate to the owner through testing and/or certification that the final product meets the specified performance criteria. This method allows and encourages the contractor to provide a competitive and/or innovative micropile design within the framework of the overall design requirements. The responsibilities for the work are shared between the owner and the contractor. ? Open Specifications: These leave the scope and design of the installation up to the micropile contractor. This method is the most common for securing bids on temporary micropile work. The responsibility for design and performance is clearly placed on the contractor. Open specifications are not recommended for permanent applications. This method allows the contractor to select the most economical micropile system. ? Prescriptive Specification: The Owner describes specific procedures that must be followed, but which may not necessarily describe the objective of the work. When prescriptive specifications are used, the owner is responsible for the proper performance of the system. The contractor is responsible for satisfying the details of the specifications. Performance specifications are the most common and best reflect the challenges and interests of micropile technology and applications.

Selecting a minicomputer is not unlike selecting a costly piece of mining equipment such as a truck, shovel, crusher, or conveyor belt system. A marked difference might lie in the frequency at which such selection takes place; another difference might be mine management's familiarity with mining equipment vis a vis a minicomputer. These basic differences might prompt a mining company to seek the aid of a consultant when selecting a minicomputer system. Advantages and Disadvantages The fundamental advantage of employing an independent consultant is that it provides management with a source of knowledge and breadth of experience not readily available within the organization. If the consultant has a minerals background, such knowledge and experience are further enhanced by actual experience in exploration, mining, and mineral processing. If the consultant has worked within a mining company, such hands-on experience is supplemented with a meaningful understanding of the client's business; this facilitates communication between the consultant and members of the client organization. The consultant has been, so to speak, "in the client's shoes." There are several other advantages. Since computer systems cut across organizational boundaries, the independent consultant may be able to move within the organization more easily than an inside staff person to collect necessary information. Also, detachment from any manufacturer should provide the client with an objectivity and a set of recommendations as near optimal as feasible. The principal disadvantages lie in the area of continuity and accountability. Once the consultant's report has been submitted and his recommendations implemented, a discontinuity might occur. Also, if implementation does not provide the desired results, the consultant might not be available to correct the situation or account for actions taken. Proper selection of consultant services, relative to kind and duration, and the consultant's method of operation, will often prevent many of these aftereffects. Services Offered The professional consultant can help a client: •Define and summarize information systems technology* needs; • Evaluate alternatives such as in-house capability and capacity, time-sharing, or service bureaus; • Prepare a formal request for proposal (RFP) to be submitted to vendors; •Evaluate vendor proposals; •Evaluate the economics of lease vs. purchase; and •Assist in the conversion and installation. Thus, consulting services may range from evaluating an existing system and upgrading to a larger piece of equipment, to selecting a new first-for-the-organization computer. First, Define and Summarize Needs Regardless of circumstances, the most valuable document required before equipment selection is the information system plan (I/S plan). It helps insure that the company's information needs are met in a cost-effective manner. An I/S plan is usually a comporient of the mining company's overall business goals. Since an I/S plan is a formal vehicle for establishing and communicating the direction the organization intends to take to satisfy information requirements needed to achieve goals and objectives, most initial systems services are likely to center around creating such a document or updating an existing document. The trend toward company-wide I/S planning is increasing in the mining industry; however, smaller scale efforts focused at the information systems needs to support an individual

TOO often, many foremen; superintendents, managers, and executives, "The Bosses" of the oil and mining industries, do not fully realize: (1) How much personal actions '.on the job" may reduce their effectiveness in getting work done; and, (2) The importance of harmonious relations with their fellow men. Today. these qualities of personality in the people entrusted with the positions of responsibility are more important than ever with the shortages of labor so critical in vital war production. Likewise, many engineers do not fully realize that their work is essentially executive in character; i.e., other people do the actual labor. Without their help. the engineer's work would not be done. A clearer appreciation of this fact would increase their interest: (1) in the nontechnical aspects of their work. and, (2)in their relations with others, particularly the individuals in their own organization. Consequently, these engineers would be more successful in equipping themselves for greater responsibilities and increased remuneration.

Preliminary calculations show an economic advantage in using nuclear energy to supply the endothermic heat required for gasifying coal. It should be noted that the various assumptions used in preparing these calculations must undergo further evaluation through additional engineering design and research. The proposed system for gasification is the indirect process cycle with helium heated in a nuclear reactor and passed through an exchanger-type gasifier for the reaction of coal and steam to form CO (carbon monoxide) and H2 (hydrogen gas).

It had been more than a decade since this many booths were occupied at an SME Annual Meeting, but at the 2010 meeting in Phoenix, AZ 630 booths were sold to 470 vendors from the entire spectrum of the mining and minerals industry. Exhibitors such as Metso, FLSmidth, West-Tech, ABB, NIOSH, Eriez and Resource West took their usual prominent places on the exhibit floor and were joined by newcomers such as tunnel boring machine manufacturer Herrenknecht AG, Frontier Kemper, the International Society of Explosive Engineers and more than 100 other first-time exhibitors. On the floor, one could find everything from a new pair of boots to a new career in the recruitment pavilion where some of the biggest companies in mining (Barrick Gold, Freeport-McMoRan, Newmont Mining, etc..) set up shop. The following is a look at some of the companies and products that were on display at the 2010 meeting. "Most chemical process plants and metallurgical production facilities have some sort of cogeneration to minimize process energy costs. Use of Alternative Energy Production from sun and wind power with storage can become an integral part of a process plant utility. This will facilitate reduced fossil fuel usage and help minimize thermal emissions. This will be similar to Pollution Control equipment, which have become an essential part of process plants in the past four decades. Conceptual flow sheets of such Process Utility schemes are presented.IntroductionPower is supplied to industries, commercial and residential users. Over the past decade, Electric Utility companies have made major inroads, in introducing alternative energy resources in an attempt to somewhat reduce fossil fuel use in power generation. Now, on a much larger scale than in the early 1980s, residential users, motivated by government provided tax credits, have started installing alternative energy generators such as roof top wind mills or roof-top photovoltaic generators. This will minimize future energy costs, help control thermal emissions etc. This alternative power generation is typically connected to the existing power grid with two way power metering. However, the use of alternative energy generation has not been seen at large industrial sites yet.Paul Scherer Institute, Switzerland and the NREL laboratories in Colorado, are two of the several institutes which have been developing how solar thermal power can be used to supply the endothermic input energy in chemical and metallurgical processes. The theme of this present symposium addresses the above as well as the energy storage needs for such events to become continuous. This paper emphasizes the concept of how alternate energy can be used in the production of materials on a generic sense wherever there is a need for input energy – beyond endothermic process energy - while addressing how to reduce the thermal and carbon emissions.The alternative energy generation using wind or solar source is discontinuous due to the nature of the energy source. They are not only discontinuous but also variable. This necessitates storage of generated power for close to continuous use with variable loads. C Smith, et al pointed out in 2006, that 'the electric power industry has taken notice of the expansion of wind and its potential' in a summary article on integrating wind generation into utility systems.1 In 2009, the 1000 MW wind generation project in Texas had to be postponed to 2013 for lack of transmission.2 There are only a few large MW solar generation units in the US; the projects being slow mainly from lack of adequate storage and redistribution."

Development and production from open cut mines continued its vigorous growth trend during the year 1968. Material handling and transportation were again exposed to the use of larger equipment with shovels, trucks and front end loaders leading the way. Highlights of World Mining Activities Africa: The Anglo American Corp. opened a new high-grade copper mine in Zambia during the year. In Angola, the Companhia Minera do Lobita planned a 3 million ton iron ore production for 1968 from new mines which will ultimately produce 5 million tons per year. A feasibility study of Bethlehem Steel Co., for the development of large high- grade iron ore reserves in Gabon, was in final stages of completion this year and Pickands Mather and Co. continued its investigation of iron ore deposits along the Ivory Coast.

This report documents the research efforts that were undertaken to design, install and test noise abatement devices for use on off-highway haul trucks operating in surface mines. The objective of the program was to reduce the environmental noise from haul trucks. The noise reduction devices that were developed utilized existing technology and were tested on a 50-ton haul truck. The efforts emphasized the reduction of noise emitted from the engine compartment which included the use of side shields, sound absorbing material, improved radiator shroud design, and a modulating clutch fan. Noise tests were conducted using modified SAE test procedures for measuring sound levels around a stationary and moving machine, and inside of the operators compartment. Test results showed a maximum of 4 dB(A) reduction measured 16 feet from the truck. Interior cab noise was reduced 6 dB(A) with the windows and vents closed.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research to determine the conditions required to sinter a pyrrhotite calcine into a product suitable for iron blast furnace feed . The calcine , a fine - grained iron oxide produced by roasting sulfide flotation concentrate , analyzed about 60 percent iron and 1 percent sulfur . Sintering of the calcine without prior pelletization was not successful whereas firing of preformed calcine charges yielded acceptable sinter products . Batch tests were made to study the effect of the following variables on the sinter quality : Size of green pellets in the charge , quantity and type of internal carbonaceous fuel used , depth of sinter bed , moisture content of the charge , flux additions , and binder additions . The batch and continuous sinter tests showed that minus 1 / 4 - inch pellets prepared from a mixture of the calcine , coke , dolomite , and water gave sinter cakes analyzing 57 to 61 percent iron and 0.05 to 0.02 percent sulfur .

"Wet high intensity magnetic separation or WHIMS is a widely used technical process for the recovery of magnetic susceptible iron ore particles, mostly for fine and ultrafine grain sizes. The JONES® WHIMS - Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separator, has been used for many years and in countries all around the world. This paper outlines the physical principles utilized for the separation inside the unit, as well as some of the recent changes and developments on the design. It will also give an outlook on the theoretical potential of different alternative yoke materials. The aim of this paper is to analyse the suitability of different yoke materials to improve the equipment. This will be done comparing the magnetic and mechanical parameters and analysing availability and price to find the best compromise regarding cost and benefit. As far as the different kinds of materials are concerned, a special material has been identified as suitable during the comparison exercise. After running the economical calculations, especially with respect to the reduction of the total power consumption of the equipment, a tremendous reduction of the total power consumption has been determined. In addition, to the theoretical exercises and due to the promising results of the same, the Pilot Unit P 40 of the JONES® WHIMS has been manufactured with the special material in order to get practical results as well. Finally, this paper outlines the theoretical and practical results focused on the power consumption. The results are showing that the total power consumption can be reduced tremendously. Hence, the way for a new generation of JONES® WHIMS - environmentally friendly - has been paved."

An examination of the statistics of the world phosphate fertilizer industry since 1980 reveals an increasing tendency for fertilizer manufacturing activity to concentrate in phosphate rock mining areas. The economic justification for this resource-oriented strategy is clear. The choice between shipping phosphate rock, a comparatively low-value product, and shipping more valuable finished fertilizers will always be resolved in favor of the latter if cost considerations control the decision. The historical existence of substantial phosphate fertilizer manufacturing capacity oriented toward fertilizer-consuming activities and dependent on imported phosphate rock shows that narrow cost considerations have not always determined the industry's location. One is entitled to ask what conditions have changed to precipitate the observed relocations, and how permanent these changes are. These questions are the subject of this investigation.

THE study of diamond drill results at the Lake Athabaska property of Athona Mines, Limited, and the co-ordination of information secured, has demanded extensive application of methods for interpreting true conditions, both structurally and from the point of view of ore outlook. This work was in charge of a capable engineer, who, as the result of exhaustive study of the drill cores, has been able to issue maps and plans exceeding the expectations of the majority of engineers and geologists who visited the field during the past summer (1935); that is, having in view the fact that staking of the property had been completed but a few months beforehand and that geological conditions were practically unknown up to the time drilling began in April. The following pages present an outline of the work of the assay and engineering offices in co-ordinating and interpreting the results of the drilling. The writer desires to acknowledge the suggestions offered by A.P. Beavan, geologist and engineer at Athona Mines, whom he assisted during the drilling campaign, and also the co-operation of the drilling contractor's employees. Increasingly over the past couple of decades, the importance of understanding the in situ stress regime in underground hard rock mines has become accepted by all. Providers have responded to this requirement and various techniques for undertaking the measurements have been honed while others have slipped from use. It is a simple, though not inexpensive task to engage a provider to undertake the require measurements, and a comprehensive report will ensue. So, what has actually been obtained? What should the geotechnical engineer do next? What tools are necessary to do so? Regardless of the method of measurement, the report will describe the location of the measurement site and describe the basis of the methodology used in undertaking the measurements and a log of the measurement program. Finally, it will include the results, which should incorporate the normal and shear stress components of the full stress tensor. Ground control management plans (GCMP’s) and stress summary reports and spreadsheets prepared by site geotechnical engineers always include the magnitude, trend and plunge of the principal stresses. Remarkably few site-based summaries include the full stress tensor. This is a significant gap as the full stress tensor is vital for any further data manipulation. However, without the algebraic tools to undertake those manipulations, their value is diminished. This paper seeks to provide a checklist of ideas to be considered. It provides commentary on the options available to dissect the stress measurement report and ensure that the maximum possible value is derived from it. The manipulation and presentation of component stress data is also discussed. The various methods of stress measurement are not the focus of the paper but some of the strengths and weaknesses of them over which the site geotechnical engineer has some control, are highlighted.
