The base metal ore from the hanging wall of White's orebody at Rum Jungle, N.T., is composed of copper and oth.er sulphides in a rock described as a phyllite,.which consists essentially of micaceous minerals with a little graphite.Fast selective flotation was obtained in acid circuit below pH 3·5. In neutral or alkaline circuit flotation was generally slow and selectivity very poor due to the ready flotation of part of the sericite. However, it was found that fast selective flotation could be obtained in neutral or alkaline circuit by either of two treatment methods following pre-conditioning in acid circuit; firstly by decanting or filtering a substantial part of the circuit liquor, and secondly by neutralizing with soda ash or lime, providing the collector was added before neutralizing. Otherwise pre-conditioning with acid brought about no improvement whatever.To explain this behaviour, three possible reasons for the flotation of part of the sericite are examined. There is evidence that some sericite floats because of thin films of either sulphides or graphite, but it seems likely such particles will float under all the conditions investigated.On the other hand, if it is assumed that part of the sericite floats because it is activated by metallic ions derived from the circuit water, a reasonable explanation can be given for the variations in flotation behaviour.INTRODUCTIONWhite's uranium orebody at Rum Jungle, N.T., sixty miles south of Darwin, is mined and treated by Territory Enterprises Pty. The long-term supply of nickel to society was assessed with theWORLD7 model for the global nickel cycle, using new estimates of nickel reserves and resources, indicating that the best estimate of the ultimately recoverable resources for nickel is in the range of 650–720 million ton. This is significantly larger than earlier estimates. The extractable amounts were stratified by extraction cost and ore grade in the model, making them extractable only after price increases and cost reductions. The model simulated extraction, supply, ore grades, and market prices. The assessment predicts future scarcity and supply problems after 2100 for nickel. The model reconstructs observed extraction, supply and market prices for the period 1850–2020, and is used to simulate development for the period 2020–2200. The quality of nickel ore has decreased significantly from 1850 to 2020 and will continue to do so in the future according to the simulated predictions from the WORLD7 model. For nickel, extraction rates are suggested to reach their maximum value in 2050, and that most primary nickel resources will have been exhausted by 2130. After 2100, the supply per capita for nickel will decline towards exhaustion if business-as-usual is continuing. This will be manifested as reduced supply and increased prices. The peak year can be delayed by a maximum of 100 years if recycling rates are improved significantly and long before scarcity is visible.

The trend in mining thermal coal is only to mine coal with the lowest sulphur content. In many coal seams, bands of coal with high sulphur content are often present, generally occurring either at the roof or floor level. Methods of selective mining are, therefore, necessary to recover only the low sulphur coal. This paper examines the methods currently in use in mines and the alternative methods that are able or have potential to offer control of shearers and continuous miners where greater thicknesses of coal have to be left in the roof and floor. These alternative methods rely on such characteristics as neutron gamma radiation; electromagnetic waves; vibration; infrared; infrared; optical; pick force; X-ray fluorescence; conductivity; gyroscopes and laser systems.

Grade Engineering®, integrated across the mine value chain, has a pivotal role to play in achieving step change reductions in energy and water usage in mine operations. High levels of gangue rejection in the mine can significantly improve mineral head grades and overall productivity. A highly successful example is described at the Minera San Cristóbal (MSC) operation. The nature of the mineralisation in their “intrusive” ore domains in particular has facilitated high rejection rates (75 % of the mass), with significant upgrading of metal to the “accepts” streams (equating to a 2.6 times upgrade in the intrinsic Nett Smelter Return). Results from a series of production trials have confirmed these strong upgrades, resulting in the transformation of mineralised “marginal wastes” to high grade ore feedstocks. If new approaches to more energy and water efficient comminution and separation technologies can also realise gangue rejection at finer sizes in the concentrator, then preconcentration strategies across the value chain also offer the promise of no wet tailings treatment facilities and greatly reduced volumes of waste streams. This “No Tails” strategy is discussed, along with the integrated technologies needed to realise its effect. The work suggests a pathway and insights of a sustainable future for the Minerals Industry, unconstrained by Energy and Water, along with no requirement to produce problematic disposal streams. This strategy has the potential to significantly reposition the social, environmental, financial, and regulatory context of existing and new mining opportunities.

The title of “the world’s biggest volume-produced hydraulic breaker,” that was held for more than a decade by the Atlas HB 7,000, changed hands with the launch of Atlas Copco’s HB 10,000 at bauma 2007. A service weight of 10 t (11 st) and up to 50 percent higher productivity represent major steps toward a new market segment: the use of hydraulic breakers as cost-efficient production machines for primary breaking and as a true alternative to drilling and blasting. The HB 10,000 has all the technical features developed by Atlas Copco for its hydraulic breakers and includes: StartSelect — the breaker’s start-up and shut-down behavior can be adapted to the conditions. AutoControl that ensures an optimized balance of impact energy and impact frequency to maximize percussive performance. Auto-Control also reduces blank firing force and controls energy recovery. Gyroscopic surveying instruments, which apply the physical law of a gyroscope, are being used for deter-mining the azimuth of lines with a high degree of ac-curacy. In the past ten years, gyro-theodolites have been introduced widely for underground orientation in the mining industry of Russia, Germany and South Africa. Gyroscorpic methods eliminate awkward procedures of conventional shaft plumbing, and provide more safety, excellent control and the highest precision at any point under-ground without interference with hoisting operations. The advantages of gyroscopic orientation in geodetic surveys become obvious in primary and secondary triangulation, in the determination of co-ordinates of single triangulation points, using the method of trigonometric re-section and intersection, and when traversing over long distances or in areas with obstructed view. Other fields of application are found in geophysical surveys and in the orientation of technical objects; e.g. radar stations, relay stations and ballistic missiles.

The empirical McCracken and Stacey stability and risk assessment method has been in use for more than 20 years to assess geotechnical stability issues for raise bored shafts. The methodology has been applied with various levels of success. Increasingly, trends in mining and civil tunnelling have been towards larger diameter, single pass, raise bored shafts to rapidly provide means of ventilation, material movement (ore passes), or emergency egress. Identifying and assessing potentially problematic zones before raise boring commences can allow for appropriate risk-based decisions on construction, or to investigate alternative solutions. The implementation of a proactive solution to raising through an identified weak zone is preferred to the application of an engineered solution to an area subjected to substantial instability or failure. Methods for investigating potentially problematic areas are discussed in this paper based on AMC’s benchmarking data. Proactive investigation programmes resulting from these investigations are also discussed. Previous publications discussing the benchmarking data have concentrated on Australian case studies. Increased efforts and recent updates have been made to expand the database to include international case studies. This has provided further refinement of lower bound ‘raise bore rock quality index’ (QR) values, and various rock mass parameters for stability assessments. This U.S. Bureau of Mines report presents an overview of ground control considerations associated with cutter roof failure. Many of the relevant U.S. and international research studies since the late 1940's are reviewed, and summaries of recent design guides are included. Factors affecting cutter roof, such as underground stress field and rock structure around the entry, are described. Strata control techniques are also outlined. These techniques are divided into three sections: artificial support, mine structure design, and multiple-seam extraction. Other subjects covered in the report include monitoring and prediction, effect of geologic features, and mapping of adverse mining conditions. The emphasis of this report is on practical considerations; theoretical discussions are minimal.

This report describes the development of guidelines for design, inspection and maintenance of automatic couplers. In order to devise the guidelines, performance requirements for automatic couplers were carefully established. This was done through a comprehensive survey of coupler manufacturers and extensive observation of automatic couplers in service in a broad spectrum of mines. The capability of the couplers to withstand the demands of the mining environment in terms of strength characteristics, gathering range, curve negotiability, and other factors were all carefully evaluated. An analysis of coupler related accidents for the years 1972-1976 was carried out to provide information on the safety and reliability of existing automatic couplers. This formed an important input to the development of the guidelines. It is expected that these guidelines will be useful to coupler manufacturers for establishing designs for improved automatic couplers, and to mine operators for maintaining their couplers in a safe and good operating condition throughout their expected lifetime. Soil and vegetation development were studied on abandoned mine sites near Velva in Ward County, North Dakota. The sites studied were 1, 7, 17, 30 and 45 years old since abandonment; unmined sites were also studied to provide measures of comparison. Species diversity was the highest at unmined sites (114) and lowest at the I year old site (26); sites 7, 17,30 and 45 years old had 37, 52, 43 and 68 species, respectively. Stand ordination revealed that site ages were the most important in influencing species diversity and composition. Stand-environ-mental complex ordinations encompassing 53 variables showed topographic variables to be the most important followed by site ages. Rates of nutrient accumulations were as follows: organic carbon 13.1 g m-2 yr-1; nitrogen 2.5 g m-2 yr-1; phosphorus 0.01 g m-2 yr-1; potassium 0.49 g m-2 yr-1. Carbon-nitrogen ratios showed the widest range for 1 year old sites (5-40) but 70 percent of the 45 year old sites showed values below 15 which were com-parable to the unmined mixed grass prairie sites. Species distributional diagrams are provided to show their habitat preferences which may be helpful in formulating species prescriptions for revegetation.

For soil remediation technology to be effective, a thorough understanding of the interactions between a targeted contaminant and the soil matrix is crucial. Proper selection of remediation technology, based on understanding the bonding/binding characteristics of the soil and contaminant, can often result in significant remediation cost savings. Contaminated soil cleanup is complicated by both the physical nature of the soil formation and the behavior of contaminants introduced into the formation. Contaminants can exist in the subsurface in different phase attached to the soil surfaces, dissolved in the ground water, or occupying pore spaces as a separate gaseous or liquid phase. Contaminants properties and how they exist in the subsurface influence their toxicity, mobility and treatability with different remediation technologies A soil characterization study was performed to provide information for remediation technology selection for an inorganic lead contaminated soil. The soil pH, TCLP analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, the soluble anions and cations present, equilibrium leaching tests, analysis by x-ray fluorescence, sequential extractions and speciation analysis using scanning electron microscopy, were all used. Results provided many insights into contaminant behavior in the soil, indicating ultimately whether soil washing or solidification/ stabilization remediation technologies were applicable.

While the concepts of Aboriginal title share a similar jurisprudence in both Australia and Canada resource development regimes on Aboriginal title lands differ significantly. In Australia, the process is the right to negotiate with mining proponents. In Canada, the process is the duty to consult with government regarding mining projects. This paper compares and assesses the processes for ?consultation and negotiation? with Indigenous peoples when development actions (particularly in the context of mining resource development) impact Indigenous property rights and how agreement making can be progressed. This paper will question whether the resource development processes afford Indigenous people?s property rights full respect when mining developments on Indigenous lands are proposed.

Bureau of Mines Information Circular 16, Bibliography of Investment and Operating Costs for Chemical and Petroleum Plants, was published in October 1949 as an aid in making estimates of investment and operating costs of processes for manufacturing synthetic liquid fuels. Development of such processes by the Bureau of Mines was authorized by Public Law 290, 78th Congress. This bibliography included refer¬ences to and abstracts of publications appearing from 1930 to September 1948 on all processes in general use in the petroleum refining and chemical industries. Publications in this field have been numerous since compilation of the above bibliography, and the present report was prepared to cover the field from September 1948 through June 1952.3/

Industry, especially extractive industry, must now give serious attention to the impact its operations have on the natural environment and on the economic, social, and cultural context within which it operates.   While this obligation is statutorily managed, there has been a recent shift towards a culture of self responsibility. Industry is now talking about earning its ôsocial licence to operateö and the importance of maintaining the ôtriple bottom lineö, thus adding environmental and social performance to the usual financial criteria used to measure organisational performance. The social context within which companies operate has also become more sensitive with industry responding to a growing public expectation that it conduct itself in a way that strives for sustainability by operating and developing in a way that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.   There are glowing accounts of industries engaging and collaborating with the communities within which they are based. In amongst these are also some disasters which result from cultural assumptions, industry created dependencies and the failure to attain community buy-in despite significant investment by the industry involved.   There are also remarkable stories of communities, and action groups within communities, being a significant catalyst for positive change of their natural, cultural and social environment. In amongst these stories there are also accounts of long and drawn out battles; adversarial situations where no one wins; a litany of mistrust, tricks and tactics, with the better resourced party ultimately achieving its primary objectives at the cost of the other (and at the cost of any potential fruitful, mutual relationships).   So what makes the difference in achieving the positive rather than negative outcomes? The answer lies in the way the outcomes are achieved. Building relationships based on good communication, respect for divergent views, mutual understanding, and the development of trust and empathy, makes it possible to identify shared goals and objectives that best meet the needs of all parties.   Research indicates the mining industry is making good progress in developing policy and commitment to community development and engagement but that, ætranslating commitments into improved practices at the site level remains one of the industryÆs toughest challengesÆ. (Australian Government - Community Engagement and Development Handbook October 2006 @ page 49.)   This paper considers the merits of a process of community collaboration and what it has to offer in terms of meeting that challenge.

"This study sought to identify changes in continuous mining machine (CMM) operators’ risk perception and risk behaviors as a result of adding a proximity detection system (PDS) into their environment. To accomplish this research task, 9 CMM operators from 5 locations were interviewed. Interviews were thematically analyzed for constructs including patterns in risk perception and behavior before and after PDS integration and the process of adapting to the PDS. Operators discussed standing in the red zone less than they did before using the PDS; however, they also discussed other risky decisions they made while learning how to operate their CMM with the PDS technology such as “cheating” the technology and working faster to meet production goals. The process of relearning job tasks with technology and unintended behaviors as a result of that relearning process need to be taken into account when introducing new technology into the mine environment. The study results show an in-depth view of mine workers’ perspectives and how their job tasks and environment could be or are affected when learning how to use new technology that are relevant to companies and mine operators when introducing new technology into the mine environment. INTRODUCTION Established “red zones” can help prevent striking and pinning incidents by providing guidance to continuous mining machine (CMM) operators about where they should stand and not stand while operating a CMM. Although red zones influence operator placement positions, these guidelines are not foolproof safety mechanisms. Depending on the job task and circumstances of the mine environment, a CMM operator may unintentionally or intentionally stand in a red zone. For example, CMM operators may work in close proximity to their CMM for better visual attention cues and the ability to work at a higher rate of production [1-3]. To further enhance protection and prevent collisions between vehicles and mine workers, a proximity detection system (PDS) was developed for the industry. The PDS determines an individual’s position relative to a specific piece of machinery, issues visual and/or audible warnings to the mine worker to change positions, and, if necessary, disables machine motion [4]. The introduction of new technology within other sectors has been identified as a factor that influences work decisions. Specifically, previous research demonstrates that when technology debuts there can be an initial intrinsic risk perceived among users about how the technology will interact with their current environment and behaviors; however, these ambiguities, including the possible risks and benefits, are seldom studied [5]. Some research suggests that the constant presence of technology can disrupt situation awareness and decision-making capabilities by increasing worker responsibilities and worker cognitive demands [6-8]. Further, if workers’ perceived risks both with and without technology are misjudged, unsafe decisions that result in human error and injury may be more likely [9-11]. Although these statements are provided within a broad contextual framework, they support the need to study how technology is perceived among end users in their own environment. Because research about technological impact on worker behaviors has suggested both positive and negative consequences of technology, this issue is worth addressing in the mining industry. Specifically, research has not determined whether CMM operators view their placement choices in the red zone as safe or risky and what effect PDS technology has, if any, on risk perception and subsequent risk behavior."
