This Bureau of Mines report evaluates the performance of commercially available portable instrumentation for the detection of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, oxygen, and methane at conditions simulating an industrial work atmosphere. Portable instrumentation included in the study was gas-detection tubes (length-of-stain and color intensity), catalytic detector, liquid absorption detectors, paramagnetic oxygen detector, galvanic detector, and pelement or hot-wire methane detectors. Evaluation of the instruments was in atmospheres with 50 and 80 percent relative humidities at 75° F and containing test gas concentrations of 0.1, 0.25, 0.50, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 times the thresh-old limit value. Correlation of the results from the portable gao analyzer with measurement from the standard instruments was made by calculating and plotting an estimated line of regression, prediction, and confidence limits and the correlation coefficient for each detector system. Relative humidity in the 50-to 80-percent range did not appear to contribute to instrumental uncertainties in either performance or operation. Considerable deviation in detection precision between the portable gas-detection systems and the standard systems was established, especially at the lower gas concentration levels. The main difference or inconsistency in toxic gas concentrations determined with length-of-stain tubes resulted from the observer's interpretation of the results rather than difference in the tubes themselves.

After many years of research, the occurrence of pneumoconiosis, black lung disease, among miners has been related to the mass of respirable coal dust to which mining personnel have been exposed. Congress passed Public Law No. 91-173 in 1969, which limited the dust concentration of respirable dust allowed in the mine working areas to 2.0 mg /M3 as of December 31, 1972. As a result of these restrictions, much work has been done in determining methods of either eliminating or suppressing respirable dust. The purpose of this project is to determine the state-of-the-art in continuous mining machine bit technology, particularly with regard to dust production.

Research and development of respirable dust sampling instruments which will more accurately collect the respirable Cuss as defined by the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. 2. The purpose of this research was to develop a system capable of detecting changes in the structure of rocks, leading to failure of mine roofs, and/or excavations. A prototype system was developed, field tested and delivered to the United States Bureau of Mines for further evaluation and research. This system is based on the analysis of acoustic signals generated on the surface of the roof by an impact device and which are reflected or backscattered by flaws and discontinuities in the rock. The specially designed impact source is capable of generating high frequency acoustic signals with excellent repeatability. The system can also be used in conjunction with conventional acoustic pulse transducers. The received signal is digitized and the data transferred to a minicomputer for processing and display. This capability allows the immediate determination of wave velocity and/or distance to a reflecting interface. Various data processing techniques such as averaging, differentiating, and comparing of different signals can be selected by entering the appropriate commands on the keyboard. Being a programmable system it is possible to implement more advanced signal processing techniques. All results as well as the signal are displayed on a CRT. Furthermore, a permanent record of the data can be generated on paper tape, which can be reentered and processed at a later date. A communications interface allows transmission of the sampled signal to a large scale re-mote computer. The system was tested extensively in the laboratory, and field tested at the York Canyon Coal Mine. These tests proved the feasibility of operation in the mining environment. Results indicate that further investigation and development will have to be undertaken to fully develop the potential of this system in satisfying the goals of this research.

The aim of the present study is to determine on a gram per gram basis the toxic products of the thermal oxidative degradations of selected compositions. Four families of materials were investigated under the subject contract namely polyvinyl chloride and neoprene compositions, rigid urethane foams I and woods. Three methods were employed to conduct the thermal oxidative degradations: a sealed system (quiescent environment) I a stagnation burner arrangement (dynamic environment) I and a flow-through apparatus (dynamic I but less severe than stagnation burner conditions). The majority of tests were conducted using the first two systems; only limited experiments were carried out employing the third decomposition procedure. All decomposition was done at temperatures of 370 -4000C I the higher temperature being used in the stagnation burner. It has to be stressed that the nature of the products and the relative product concentration are temperature dependent. Thermogravimetric and differential thermal analyses were performed to supplement and extend the above delineated studies and to explore the feasibility of using these analyses as a method for material differentiation.

This report, rather than attempting to replace previous annual reports, supplements, and more importantly, coordinates and summarizes the entire effort. Even with such restrictions, the report is voluminous and, therefore, a decision has been made to divide it into two parts. The first volume is basically narrative and includes tabular results and analyses. The second volume is in appendix form giving detailed information. Together, they permit a logical discussion of all aspects of the project (Volume I) without cumbersome distractions but, at the same time, provide all the details to permit others to evaluate and explain the results or develop similar research programs (Volume II). The aim of the original proposal was basically to develop instruments and techniques and then make measurements of suitable power parameters, ground fault currents and ground resistance beds. With such information available, it was possible to develop a meaningful simulator which would permit investigating electrical systems and components on paper without costly trial and error procedures in the third year, a cable splice testing program was added to the project. While there were the usual delays attendant in such original research, these objectives were achieved.

Electrical trailing cable used to power coal mining machinery is frequently damaged in usage because of tensile strain or crushing effect of mining machines running over the cable. One of the repair problems is finding the exact location of a short or open in this cable so it may be spliced or otherwise repaired. The U.S. Bureau of Mines and FMC corporation signed Contract No. H0 122011 in August, 1971, to develop instrumentation for finding faults in coal mine trailing cable. This report describes performance of several existing instruments as trailing cable fault locators and also construction details and performance records of several cable fault location instruments that FMC designed, built and tested as part of this project.

U.S. Bureau of Mines contract H0122053, "Improved Sensors and Fire Control Systems for Mining Equipment", was an investigative effort involving: ? Study of the fire problem on large mobile mining equipment ? Identification of equipment most prone to fire, to serve as a design case example ? Design of an improved fire protection system ? Demonstration of the developed system This effort was performed during the period June 1972 through May 1973, and was conducted in two phases. Phase I, June through November 1972, was devoted to identifying the fire problem and developing and evaluating design criteria. Phase II involved translating the design into hardware and demonstrating its effectiveness during actual fire tests, first on a wooden mockup of a truck, then on an operating truck at a working mine site.

This report reviews the work performed on Task M of Bu-Mines Contract H0220073 to develop an engineering model of a surface and subsurface communications system for normal mine operations and for post disaster rescue operations. The system concept provides for one-way transmission of digital information between a number of identifiable subsurface terminals or subcenters and a single surface station. It also provides 2-way voice communications between the subcenters and the surface station. The basic communications link is electromagnetic signaling through-the-earth, but the system is also capable of using mine phone lines as an alternate link. Engineering models of three subcenters and one surface terminal (see Figure 1-1) have been fabricated in order to demonstrate the system's performance. The system concept, however, permits up to 20 subcenters to be incorporated if desired. Additional subcenters are also feasible for large mines if they can be deployed in the mine to operate on a noninterfering basis.

This study gives an analysis of the copper system byproducts and discusses the identification and classification of byproduct metals and their supply systems. Arsenic, platinum-group metals, silver, gold, selenium, tellurium, molybdenum, rhenium, uranium, aluminum, magnesium, and byproduct copper, lead, and zinc from complex ores are covered. The report describes several metallurgical systems, the marginal and incremental products costs of byproduct subsystems, industry structure and organization, and the historical data on price, consumption, and supply. Supply curves are presented for about one-half of the byproduct metals studied. The study develops a conceptual framework for analysis by reviewing the present concepts of byproduct supply and the related price theory. It gives the sources of supply of the individual byproduct metals to indicate the importance of the byproduct supply to the total supply. Mills, smelters, and refineries processing byproduct materials for their metal content are identified by geographic location and company ownership, The study also includes information on the reserves-resource base supporting byproduct output, reserve estimates, and the demand aspects of each byproduct metal.

1.1 DEVELOPMENT OF INDUCTANCE MATRICES The basic building block in this analytical work is the development of an equivalent circuit. The equivalent circuit for the cable depends on all of the distributed parameters of the cable although the series inductance and resistance are of primary importance. The cable resistances are generally available from handbooks or from cable manufacturers. On the other hand, the cable inductances are not usually available either from handbooks or from the manufacturer's published data. Thus, it is useful to summarize the derivation of the origin of the inductance matrix from basic principles. 1.1.1 Flux Around a Cylindrical Conductor The flux pattern around a cylindrical current carrying conductor can be found by using symmetry in conjunction with Ampere's Law. From symmetry it is clear that the flux lines which always close on themselves must be concentric circles. Thus, from symmetry alone one can get a qualitative picture of the magnetic field. This is shown in Fig. 1.1 where the inner circle represents the solid round conductor and the outer circle represents a flux line. The quantitative picture will now be developed using Ampere's Law.

Sylvite of Canada, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., operates an 8000 TPD potash mine and refinery located nine miles North East of Rocanville, Saskatchewan. Prior to Hudson Bay's entry in 1968 into potash mining and refining, it was one of the more traditional and conservative Canadian Mining Companies whose principal business had been for many years a successful copper-zinc mining and smelting operation located at Flin Flon, Manitoba. The potash reserves being mined by Sylvite were acquired through the acquisition of Francana Oil and Gas. This acquisition was at the time when several major potash mines were being developed or had recently been brought into production in the Province. These mines are owned by either very substantial Canadian Mining Companies or Multi-National Mining Companies with considerable potash mining experience. At that time, it became very apparent because of the new mines coming into production, potash mining and refining would quickly become a very competitive industry. Because of long term considerations, Hudson Bay decided to proceed with the development of its potash reserves, recognizing the Mine and Refinery would have to be the most advanced available in order to successfully operate. This report deals with the mining operation at Sylvite and the degree of success Sylvite has achieved.

The purpose of this work was to investigate the rate at which coal is delivered from the underground working face by gathering arm type loaders as employed on continuous mining machines, to identify the factors -- geometrical, geological, mechanical, or procedural which affect the delivery rate, and to develop quantitative rate descriptive equations for the loading function. The mathematical techniques employed were factor analysis and multiple linear regression. It was determined that the coal-cutting function of the continuous mining machine is the factor that primarily influences the loading function. The geometrical factors -- the dimensions of the work area in relation to the dimensions of the mining machine - were the factors of secondary influence. Fifty-five percent of the experimental variation in the loading function was explained in terms of the six most prominent independent variables. It is expected that this work will be useful in operations-research studies as applied to underground coal mining, and with refinement will enable mine planners to select equipment based on the operating characteristics of the equipment and the mining conditions.

The purpose of this effort was to investigate the feasibility of employing a piezoelectric transducer for seismic communications applications in mine environments. The transducer, a government furnished device incorporated a high Q, spring-mass resonator to load the air side of the piezoelectric crystal. The resonant frequency was seismic load dependent and fell in the range of 300 to 340 Hz. The effort included a mathematical analysis of the transducer, with corroborative laboratory tests, together with actual communications experiments performed first in an open-formation limestone quarry and finally in an operating iron mine. This work showed that the transducer could be coupled efficiently to hard, competent rock media with power conversion efficiencies of 70 to 80 percent (electrical to mechanical) in typical installations. In the iron mine, when radiating peak power was about 30 W (acoustical) in a gated pulse mode, signals were received at a distance of 760 ft through a massive rhyolite porphyry formation. This represents a 15% radiation efficiency with an input of 200 watts. Despite the high ambient noise level due to operating mine machinery, a signal-to-noise ratio of about 20 dB was achieved using a very narrow band filter to process the received signal, and a data rate of about two pulses/sec was demonstrated.

This report describes a program of research to evaluate methanometry in coal mines. The program commenced by conducting an extensive state-of-the-art survey. Details of the survey are presented which includes a rating of various types of instruments that can be used to detect and record methane gas. Laboratory test data, on mine instruments tested are presented together with results from a computerized statistical analysts.

A study was made of zircon powders bonded with phosphoric acid or aluminium orthophosphate. The influence of strength of solution of the phosphatic binders on the modulus of rupture over a temperature range was investigated. Physical properties of three grades of zircon powder bonded with phosphatic binders were studied at various temperatures. Examination of x-ray diffraction data indicated that phosphates ofzirconia are preferentially formed to phosphates of silica. However, zircon in the presence of excess phosphoric acid also forms phosphates of silica upon heating.Resistance to attack by slags from blast and open hearth furnaces was determined on phosphate-bonded zircon mortars in a cup test with industrially made ladle bricks. Zircon powders bonded with phosphates proved to have high P.C.E. values. The first satisfactory results of a plant trial with phosphate-bonded zircon mortar, used in a steel ladle, are now being assessed in larger scale industrial tests prior to accepting the mortar as a steel plant refractory.

Vertical magnetic surveys have been made over about 3, 150 miles of the crystalline area of east-central Alabama. A contour map (100-gamma interval) showing regional magnetic anomalies has been prepared (scale 1:250,000) from data points located at quarter-mile intervals on all public roads. Small one- and two-station anomalies were eliminated, leaving only areally extensive anomaly features associated with regional geology. The regional gradient was "filtered" from the basic data and the resulting magnetic configuration compared to the regional geology. Regional lines of vertical magnetic intensity trend northeast and follow the structural framework of the area. Correlations can be made between a large number of geologic and magnetic features. The strongest regional anomalies are associated with the Goat Rock, Bartletts Ferry, Towaliga, and Brevard fault structures. The Inner Piedmont area is characterized by a broad regional high. The magnetic values of the northern Alabama Piedmont grades gently northwestward, disrupted occasionally by elongate highs and lows associated with amphibolites or granites. Scattered throughout the Piedmont are anomalous areas of high magnetic intensity; some are related to magnetic-bearing rocks, and some Indicate possible mineralization. The title of my talk is "The Gold Miner and the Future of Gold." This title might just as accurately have been stated as "Gold and the Future of the Gold Miner." Since prehistoric times gold has been sought by mankind for its beauty and its unusual physical and chemical properties. Early in the dawn of civilization it became the ultimate unit of value and lubricated trade between peoples. For at least 6000 years, gold has been used to barter for other commodities. It has been prospected for, treasured, made into works of art and personal adornment, and from time to time has been the object of conquest. Because of its predominant role in recent centuries as a basis for money, economists began to think of it solely in these terms. Annoyed by the disciplinary pressure of gold on the money manager's desire to manipulate money, the famous economist, John Maynard Keynes, characterized it as a "barbaric relic of the past", a characterization repeated by William McChesney Martin, Jr., when he was head of the Federal Reserve Bank. Gold, however, has physical and chemical properties that make it one of the most useful metals in the modern world.' It is the most ductile metal known. An ounce of gold, for example, can be drawn into a continuous wire over 35 miles long. It also is so malleable that an ounce of gold can be beaten into films ten one-millionths of an inch thick sufficient to cover 68 sq ft of surface. It has a density of 19.3 and is so heavy that 1 cu ft of gold weighs more than half a ton. Gold is nonmagnetic and has a high electric conductivity, only slightly less than silver and copper. Gold is so inert to all the chemicals found in nature that gold coins and jewelry buried beneath the soil or at the bottom of the sea for thousands of years appear to be as bright and perfect as when they were first immersed. Finally, gold has an extremely high reflectivity both to light and infrared rays. Because of these qualities, in addition to its rare beauty, industrial and artistic uses of gold have been growing rapidly. On a world basis, a recent study estimated that in 1960 about 750 tons of gold were used for fabrication, and that the amount had grown to about 1296 tons in 1968. My objective in this talk is to discuss with you the present and future supply of and demand for gold on a worldwide basis and the effect these forces are likely to have on the price the miner can expect to receive for the gold he produces. Three types of X-ray analytical instrumentation were compared for applications in the secondary brass and bronze industry. The instruments were a conventional X-ray spectrograph, a portable X-ray spectrograph, and a radioiso-topic X-ray analyzer using balanced filters. The following two general applications were considered: Rapid identification for sorting scrap metals and quantitative analyses to provide guidance in the melting and casting of alloys. Twenty-three analyzed copper-base alloys were used as standards. Although the alloys varied widely in composition, matrix correction procedures were not necessary except for copper. The conventional X-ray spectrograph provides positive identification of the alloys and quantitative values for the six elements investigated--aluminum, copper, iron, lead, tin, and zinc. Equivalent results were obtained with the portable X-ray spectrograph for those elements whose characteristic X-rays are in the wavelength range of the instrument. The radioisotopic X-ray analyzer distinguishes certain groups of alloys and provides quantitative determinations for copper, lead, tin, and zinc. The sensitivity of the analyzer was marginal for the determination of small concentrations of elements of atomic number 26 or lower.

The processing of sweated aluminum electronic scrap was investigated to develop methods for recovering the aluminum and concentrating the other metals, including copper, lead, gold, and silver, into a product that can be separated by known methods. Two molten-salt electrorefining processes were developed and tested. The first process utilized a three-layer refining cell with a BaCI2-NaF-AIF3 electrolyte, which operated at 750° to 850° C. The second process used an all-chloride electrolyte of NaCI-KCI-AICI3 at 750° to 800° C, with separate anode and cathode compartments. High-quality aluminum was recovered that averaged 99.8-percent pure in the three-layer cell and 99.6-percent pure in the compartment cell. Over 94 percent of the aluminum was recovered with cathode current efficiencies of approximately 90 percent in both methods. The copper, lead, tin, silver, gold, and other metals were concentrated threefold in an anode product. Separation of lead and part of the tin by liquation from this product seemed feasible. The anode product was smelted to prepare a 96-percent copper bullion that contained 690 ounces of silver and 65 ounces of gold per ton, with 98 percent recovery of these values.
