C ONDITIONS have not been favorable for new developments in any line. It has been a period, how- ever in which recent developments have been subjected to the severest tests. Those which have been able to hold their own in the severe competition of 1932 must be considered fully proved commercial processes. The continuous vertical-muffle retort plant at Palmer- ton is reported to have been in operation at practically full capacity throughout the year. The high quality of metal produced and the low operating costs are factors which have kept this plant running when many of the older furnaces were shut down. The plant at Meadow- brook, W. Va., is also reported to have been in steady operation throughout the year. Average retort life is said to be better than two years with about three-quarters of the original retorts still in operation after 2 ½ years.

The experiments described in this publication were inspired by the Bell System's large interest in lead-alloy sheathed cables and by the wide range of fatigue and corroding conditions to which they are sometimes subjected in service. The first experiments consisted of operating specimens of lead + I per cent antimony telephone cable sheath alloy in a fatigue test while they were immersed in water taken from a manhole. Because of many published reports concerning corrosion-fatigue phenomena of various metals and alloys, a reduction in fatigue life was expected(1)2 Instead, however, the fatigue test ran on for many times the normal number of cycles an4 was finally stopped without failure. Because of this, the experiments were broadened to include the effect of many media on the fatigue properties of four lead alloys over a wide range of testing speeds and strains. The status of the natural gas industry in Alberta, Canada, is described with particular reference to the current extent of natural gas reserves and possibilities for additional development. Certain major fields are discussed as representative of the types of gas accumulations within various broad geographical divisions of the provinces. The estimation of the future performance of a gas reservoir is discussed as the basis for an estimate of the future availability of natural gas from presently known reserves. The future availability of the provincial reserves and the estimated future demand for gas within the province are described. INTRODUCTION This paper is a condensation of a detailed study of the natural gas reserves and the future availability of pipeline gas in the province of Alberta as prepared for Trans-Canada Pipe Lines Limited and presented in public hearings at Edmonton and Calgary before the Petroleum and Natural Gas Conservation Board of the Province of Alberta. The study began in October, 1950, and resulted in the preparation of five volumes of data at the expenditure of more than 20,000 man-hours. This paper is designed to afford a broad picture with detail limited to a type example of both natural ga-accumulation and future availability of gas supply. The province of Alberta has an area of 255.285 square miles which, for sake of comparison. is 8,359 square miles smaller than the state of Texas. Natural gas was first discovered in 1883 at the now abandoned Alderson well located some 20 miles southeast of the town of Princess. The first gas in commercial quantities was found at Medicine Hat in 1890. During the last 68 years. 187 localities have been discovered which are capable of gas production, and 73 per cent of these have been found since 1945. Sixty fields currently are producing gas, including 22 non-associated gas accumulations. Location of the oil and gas fields and prospects in the province of Alberta is shown in Fig. 1, together with a list of the localities of measurable gas, Fig. 1A. The estimated total provincial gas reserve as of Jan. 1, 1952, for the 104 fields estimated, is 11.7 trillion cu ft proved and probable, and for the 187 known areas capable of production is in excess of 16 trillion cu ft on a total proved, probable, and possible basis. Five fields (Pincher Creek, Leduc-Woodbend, Viking-Kinsella, Cessford and Medicine Hat) are estimated to have recoverable reserves of more than one trillion cu ft each. A sixth field, Turner Valley, was initially in this group, but its reserves have been depleted substantially. Twenty-four fields, of which the above mentioned six fields are a part, have estimated gas reserves (including the possible category) in excess of 100 billion cu ft. These 24 fields account for 79 per cent of the total provincial reserves. Comparative systemic analyses reflect that 56 per cant of Alberta's gas reserves are contained in sediments of Cretaceous age; 30 per cent in sediments of Mississippian age; 10 per cent in sediments of Devonian age; three per cent in sediments of Triassic age; and the remaining one per cent in Jurassic and Permo-Pennsylvanian sediments. It is expected that the relative importance of the Mississippian, Devonian, and Triassic sediments will be increased as exploration progresses. GENERAL GEOLOGY The western Canada basin comprises the sedimentary area between the Canadian Shield and the Rocky Mountain Front Range, the Arctic Ocean, and the International Boundary. The basin has an approximate area of 765,000 square miles and embraces parts of the provinces of Manitoba. Saskatchewan. Alberta, British Columbia and the Northwest Territories. Generalized columnar sections for the Province of Alberta are shown in Fig. 2. Substantially all of Alberta, except its northeast corner, has sedimentary cover. Sediments of all the geologic systems are represented. except those of Silurian age.

THE elementary mechanism of deformation in the body-centered cubic metals has been a subject of dispute for many years. If the problem were merely that of designating the crystallographic plane or planes of slip, the solution would have appeared long ago. However, there must be greater differences in the deformation behaviors of the body-centered and face-centered types than the differences in their lattices would suggest. The lines of slip formed on the polished surface of a strained face-centered cubic metal conform to glide over a single plane of the crystal. Slip in body-centered cubic iron, however, is frequently observed as curved and forked lines which could not possibly define a single plane of atoms. This alone is sufficient reason to expect different modes of deformation to operate in the two lattice types. The literature in this field now has generally accepted the proposition that {110), {112), or (1231 planes will act as slip planes in iron. It is essential that the experimental evidence supposedly supporting this proposition be critically examined. Taylor and Elam1 in 1926, using relatively small single crystals, determined the operative slip systems by measurements of the distortion of a grid engraved on the specimens prior to deformation. Their results indicated that shearing had taken place in the close-packed direction on a plane adjacent to or coinciding with the plane of maximum shear which contained the slip direction. This led the authors to propose a theory of noncrystallographic or banal slip. The authors considered an alternate rationalization of banal glide. Slip on two (1101 planes or possibly two {112} planes containing the same <1ll> direction could produce the wavy slip lines. By employing plane segments of varying widths, the integrated plane could take any position in the <111> zone. They rejected this explanation, however, feeling that the preponderance of evidence was against it. Taylor&apos; continued the investigation of the plasticity of the body-centered cubic lattice on ß brass. He reasoned that the resistance to shearing of a given plane in the zone of the slip direction was a function of the angle between the glide plane and the closest (110),: P F=—cose sine cos(X —?) [1] where F is the resistance to shear; P, the axial load at yielding; A, the cross sectional area; e, the angle between slip direction and load axis; x, the angle between plane of maximum shear containing the slip direction and the (101) pole; and ?, the angle between observed glide plane and the (101) pole. Differentiating Eq. 1 and rearranging, dF — = tan(x-?) d? [2] F which expresses the variation of the shear resistance with the angle $. Integrating this equation between the limits 0 and ? yields In F/F0 = ?0?tan(x— ?) d? [3] Here, F, is the resistance to shear of the (110) plane and F is the resistance to shear of a plane $ degrees from the (110). Thus, the variation of shear resistance with $ can be calculated from an experimentally measured x vs $ relationship. Molybdenum of high purity can be produced by direct dissociatiott of commercial molyhdenm disulfide in vacuo at 1600° to 1700°C (2910° to 3090°F). The Product is lower in oxygen than commercially available molybdenzdm powder. Analyses of ingots arc-cast from commercial molybdenum powder, hydrogen-re-cluced from animonium molybdate, and from thermally dissociated molybdenum disulfide indicate that the levels of chemical impurities in these ingots are similar. Equipment now in operation will produce 100-lb hatches of powder product. The paper describes development of processing equipment, control of processing varzahles, handling of the product, and evaluatiotl of the melal produced. MOLYBDENITE (molybdenum disulfide) can be decomposed by heat in the absence of oxygen to produce elemental molybdenum and sulfur, which is evolved as a gas. The temperatures required for the dissociation are above 1370°C (2500°F); the sulfur must be continuously withdrawn to permit the reaction to proceed to completion. This is accomplished by continuous evacuation of the thermal dissociation chamber and condensation of the gaseous sulfur in another part of the system. Cognizance of the fact that the dissociation takes place in two steps is important in controlling the process. Basically, the molybdenite dissociation process has two potential advantages as a method of produc- ing pure molybdenum: 1) The materials entering into the process contain little or no oxygen. Since the process is carried out in vacuum at high temperature, the quantities of interstitial oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen in the product should be very low. 2) The process is more direct than the commercia1 method of producing high-purity molybdenum. In the conventional process, molybdenite is roasted to molybdic oxide, the oxide is purified first by sublimation, then by conversion to ammonium molybdate, and finally, the molybdate is reduced in a hydrogen atmosphere (usually in two steps) to the metal lic molybdenum powder. This paper presents a description of the stages in scaling-up of the dissociation equipment and an account of attempts to evaluate the molybdenum produced by thermal dissociation, rather than a report of a fundamental study of the dissociation reaction. Since little has been written on the subject, it is appropriate, before detailing the development of the process, to review briefly the research that has been conducted over quite a period of years. IT can scarcely be considered a matter of doubt, in the present state of our knowledge, that the existence of, at any rate, two well-marked allotropic modifications of gold can be recognized, namely (a), the ordinary, yellow variety, and (b) the red, brown or purple, non-lustrous, amorphous variety. There are, indeed, not wanting indications that still other allotropic forms may be capable of existing. It is, for instance, possible that the green colors of gold obtained under certain conditions, or the black powder produced when the alloy of gold with potassium is decomposed by water, may represent further allotropic modifications, although this proposition is open to doubt. It call scarcely be pretended that the two first-named varieties have been absolutely isolated, yet it is, perhaps, quite permissible to speak of the ordinary and the amorphous modifications as having a proved existence. Ordinary gold is sometimes found crystallized in nature, although never in a state of purity. When gold is melted and, cooled slowly, its surface shows crystalline markings, and the fact that it is capable of crystallizing in the cubic system may be looked upon as established. When gold is produced by precipitation, the form which it assumes is dependent on the conditions of precipitation. G. Rose 1 says that gold precipitated by ferrous sulphate from very dilute solutions is so finely divided that no regular form can be recognized, but in more concentrated solutions the precipitate consists of minute cubes. INTRODUCTION TO MINERAL INVENTORY The first explanations to be made must answer the questions: What is a mineral inventory, and how is a mineral inventory different from an ore reserve? The term mineral inventory is a relatively new designation-born of the computer age and grown to common usage with the development of computer techniques for extending drill-hole sample values to regularly gridded data blocks representing in situ mineral values. The term has been generally accepted by geologists and engineers because it has a precise meaning which avoids many of the ambiguities of ore reserve. A mineral inventory is an estimated inventory of mineral in place and is usually achieved by dividing the deposit into regularly spaced gridded blocks to which are assigned estimated values using various extension techniques. A mineral inventory makes no presumptions about the mineability of the blocks or their cutoff grade. Such parameters are implied with the use of the term ore reserve. Ore has a specific definition (see Chapter 1) and ore reserve must reflect that definition and thus has economic and mining constraints. An ore reserve will be different under different economic and mining conditions and is subject to reclassification by many factors. The term mineral inventory avoids all such ambiguities. A mineral inventory estimate may be good or poor according to how much is known about the deposit, how extensively it has been sampled, and what techniques have been employed to assign estimated grade to the blocks. Such an inventory, however, does not change with time, economic conditions, or mining technology, but only with new and better data and methods. Thus, the mineral inventory is an excellent designation for describing mineral value distribution within a deposit&apos;s geological setting. The techniques for assigning values and tonnage to mineral blocks or panels are the subjects of this chapter. Whether a summation of the blocks be called a mineral inventory or mineral reserve is not important. Many conventional methods for computing reserves of minerals refer to the methods in terms of ore reserve calculations. OBJECTIVES OF MINERAL INVENTORY OR RESERVES Mineral inventories are computed for the purpose of determining the quantity, the quality or value, and the spatial distribution of potentially economic minerals within the earth. Such computations are made at all stages in the life of a mineral extraction process, from the early exploration phase to the final year in the life of a mine. To quote Popoff (1966, p. 2), "They are the most responsible and irreplaceable tasks in the valuation of a mineral deposit. Efficiency in extraction and productiveness is impossible without accurate reserve computations." The accuracy of estimate required for each of the three parameters of quantity, value, and location is dependent upon the objective for which the reserve estimate is being made. Again quoting Popoff (1966, p. 2): Reserves are computed to determine the extent of exploration and development; distribution of values; annual output; probable and possible productive life of the mine; method of extraction and plan design; improvements in extraction, treatment, and processing; and requirements for capital, equipment, labor, power, and materials. The coals mined in the area known as the anthracite fields of Pennsylvania have always been recognized commercially as anthracites. In the literature, however, some of these anthracites have been called semi-anthracites by various writers. The coals mined in Sullivan County, especially those from the Bernice field, have been recognized commercially both as anthracites and semi-anthracites. In the literature they have almost always been referred to as typical semianthracites, although Franklin Platt,1 in his report to the Pennsylvania Geological Survey, uses the terms semibituminous, semianthracite, and anthracite in describing them. The purpose of this paper is to endeavor to dispel the confusion of names used to describe these coals and to supply further information that will permit a logical and definite classification. Most of the confusion of the past has been due to the impossibility of securing enough fresh face samples from which to draw sound conclusions; some of it was due, no doubt, to lack of standard methods of analysis, and of course, to the ever-present lack of definition of boundaries from the standpoint of classification. Map Showing Lines of Equal Volatile Matter and Lines of Equal Specific Gravity As a foundation for this work the writer constructed a map showing lines of equal volatile matter and lines of equal specific gravity throughout the anthracite and semianthracite regions. The points on these lines were determined from a study of analyses of 214 face samples from 28 mines and composite analyses from 18 different breakers. These samples were collected through the joint efforts of the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the Anthracite Institute. The Bureau of Mines standard method of sampling was used in all cases. All analyses were made by the Bureau of Mines and are used here with its permission. The

A discussion of the paper published in Bi-Monthly Bulletin, No. 20, March, 1908, pp. 227 to 237, and No. 22, July, 1908, pp. 615 to 620. PROF. HENRY M. HOWE, New York, N. Y. (communication to the Secretary *) :-Mr. Hibbard&apos;s definition of steel would be the best yet offered were it not for its one defect, the vagueness or equivocalness of "fusion-process." Puddling is surely in one sense a fusion-process, and so are the charcoal-hearth or knobbling-processes. But what he says suggests the following definition, which seems to me a good one: " Steel: any variety of iron which is usefully malleable at least at some one temperature, and is either cast when molten into a malleable mass, or if not so cast can be much hardened by sudden cooling." It is not necessary in a definition that quantitative bounds should be set up, for instance, that the exact height at which dwarf apple-trees cease and standards begin, or at which hills cease and mountains begin, should be stated. These quantitative measures are proper for specifications and contracts, but are not necessary for purposes such as the present. HENRY D. HIBBARD, Plainfield, N. J. The need for instruments to measure the movement of fluids and gas in wells has been recognized by engineers for many years. Information regarding flow in the producing interval has a direct bearing on completion practices in new wells and also provides information on the production characteristics of the well. Many hours of engineering time are spent in planning and completing wells but knowledge as to whether or not the original planning has produced the desired results has not always been complete. Many questions such as the following often arise: Why is it that two wells are completed under supposedly identical conditions, yet one well is a good one and the other is a poor one? Are the sands that look the best on the electric log contributing to the production? These and many other conditions in the producing well need to be under- stood in order to develop more efficient production practices and to improve on methods of completing new wells. It is the purpose of this paper to briefly describe one type of instrument, outline the methods of running the equipment and show the results of surveys made under various conditions. With an understanding of the use of this type of survey its importance can be evaluated in relation to the problems encountered by the operator. DESCRIPTION OF INSTRUMENT The instrument is a velocity recorder employing a clock-controlled 16mm film for recording the rpm of an extremely sensitive rotor which is rotated by the flow of fluids or gas in a well. The helical-vaned rotor and shaft, weighing one-half of one ounce are an integral unit exposed to the well fluids and are the only moving parts not enclosed in the fluid-tight housing. No packing or fluid seal of these parts is necessary and the shaft is mounted top and bottom on special jeweled bearings. Fig. A is the lower part of the instrument showing rotor and shaft with the protecting housing sleeve removed. The rpm of the rotor is recorded on the moving film by a combination electrical and optical system. The record is a series of dashes on the film, each dash and space representing twenty (20) revolutions of the rotor. As the movement of the film is controlled by the clock the number of dashes and spaces in one minute of film travel represents the rpm of the rotor. The range of the instrument is from 0 to 2,500 rprn. The barrel or housing is 1-11/16 in. OD and seven feet long. Various types of expanding fluid traps are attached to the lower end of the instrument to direct the flow through the 1 in. orifice containing the rotor. Various grades of synthetic mullite have been developed in recent years to replace or supplement natural sources of mullite deriued from the mullite group of minerals consisting of sillimanite, kyanite, and andalusite. Raw materials and heat treating processes used in making synthetic mullite are described. Chemical and physical data are given for typical grades and crystalline structure is illustrated with micrographs. Use of synthetic mullite as a refractory material in the glass and metallurgical industries is discussed. Mullite (3A12O3.2siO2), the only stable compound formed in the alumina-silica system, is usually present to some degree in all aluminum silicate ceramic products. The formation of mullite is considered beneficial to give rigidity to the structure and is dependent upon the ratio of Al2O3 to SiO2 in the original composition, particle size, degree of mixing, firing temperature, cooling rate, and the presence of auxiliary glass-forming fluxes. Mullite may also be formed at the reaction interface of fire clay or alumina-type refractories in contact with glass or slag melts. The term synthetic mullite is commonly used today to identify a class of sintered and fused aggregates or grains in the alumina-silica system having a highly developed mullite structure but derived mainly from raw materials other than the sillimanite group of minerals. Within the past 15 years extensive research has been done to develop economical processes to form sintered synthetic mullite aggregate to replace calcined Indian kyanite in super-refractories. Severa1 brands of such mullite are now being produced in commerical quantity and finding extensive use in refractories. Based on the service results of such refractories in many applications throughout the metallurgical, ceramic, and glass industry these developments have been considered successful and suitable substitutes for Indian kyanite now appear assured. EARLY DEVELOPMENT The conversion of kyanite, sillimanite and anda-lusite minerals of the sillimanite group to mullite and their use in refractories and porcelain have been discussed quite extensively in the literature by peck,&apos; Grieg,&apos; Riddle and Foster,3 Bowen and Grieg,4 and others and will only be mentioned here for reference to compare properties with synthetic mullite. In 1928, curtis5 reported on the development of a high temperature gas-converter process for forming synthetic mullite. The raw materials were derived mainly from lumps of high alumina clay of the correct natural composition or blends of clays and alumina that was interground and briquetted to form a suitable charge to maintain a surface combustion firing within the converter. Curtis was, no doubt, the first to illustrate by micrographs in natural color the crystalline structure of mullite derived from kyanite and mullite derived by sintering clay and alumina mixtures at temperatures above cone 32 (3123°F) and by electric fusion. In 1937, sei16 was issued a patent covering the use of a mixture of alumina-silica minerals and alumina in the proportion to form a mullite-yielding material at temperatures in excess of 3100&apos; F. During the period from 1930 to 1940, economic conditions were not favorable for the production of synthetic mullite mainly due to an adequate supply of good grades of Indian kyanite ore suitable for conversion to mullite. Uncertain conditions on availability of the Indian kyanite during the early stages of World War II fostered further study on the development of synthetic substitutes. In 1943, McVay and wilson7 reported on an extensive investigation of domestic substitute materials. Their work covered essentially the use of mixtures of electric furnace mullite, calcined topaz, and calcined domestic kyanite. Compositions were found that gave equivalent or better hot load strength than Indian kyanite in mullite-type brick compositions; however, the calcining of the topaz presented certain physical and chemical problems on the disposition of silicofluoride and hydrofluoric acid while the high cost of electric furnace mullite was a limiting factor. In this work it was pointed out that water-quenched fused mullite was found to be unstable on reheat and gave poor hot load strength due to excessive glass present whereas the slow cooled or annealed mullite contained large crystals of mullite and corundum with little glass and gave superior results.

THE 143d* meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers was held in New York, Feb. 19-22, 1934. It consisted of the annual business meeting, 45 technical sessions at which 217 papers were presented (more than ever before), two sessions of the Board of Directors, two meetings of Section delegates, three formal lectures, luncheon Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for members and guests, three group dinners and five group luncheons, eight committee meetings, the annual reception and dinner dance, an informal dance, a smoke-dinner and the annual meeting of the Woman&apos;s Auxiliary. Attendance showed an improvement over the previous year, as follows: Total, 1534 in 1934, and 1475 in 1933; dinner dance, 543 and 426; smoker-dinner, 425 and 394; informal dance, 295 and 250; women&apos;s registration, 160 and 133; luncheons, 1034 and 734. The Coal Division held a general session and three sessions on Coal classification. It also met jointly with the Committee on Ground Movement and Subsidence. At the general session, John B. Dilworth presented a report of the Committtee on Methods of Valuing Coal Proper- ties and R. H. Sweetser a report of the Committee on Evaluation of Coal for Blast-furnace Coke. C. B Huntress, Executive Secretary of the National Coal Association, was the principal speaker at a luncheon on Monday, at which Eli T. Conner, Chairman of the Division, presided H. N. Eavenson, newly elected President of the Institute, and Edward W Parker, Secretary-Treasurer, of the Anthracite Institute, also spoke. The Executive Committee of the Division met Tuesday afternoon. The Sectional Committee on Classification of Coal met on Thursday morning and the Technical Committees on Scientific and Use Classification of Coal on Thursday afternoon. The Committee on Mining Methods held two general sessions, one for presentation of a half-dozen interesting papers on strictly mining subjects, the other on Aerial Transportation. It also participated jointly in a session on ground movement and subsidence with the committee of that name and the Coal Division The Institute&apos;s Standing Committee on Aviation had its inception at the session on Aerial Transportation

Orientation relationships and rates of annealing of 97 pct cold rolled zirconium have been studied by X-ray techniques, metallography, and by hardness measurements. The process of annealing occurring by the formation of domains, and their subsequent growth without recrystallization, is demonstrated. NUMEROUS investigators1-&apos; have revealed sub-grain formation after annealing cold worked metal single crystals and have generally described the results in terms of a dislocation mechanism of polygonization.5,6 in heavily cold rolled polycrystal-line aluminum the first stages of heating cause an apparently spontaneous subdivision of regions of the deformed matrix into a great number of slightly disoriented domains followed or accompanied by rapid growth of certain domains to form a recrystallization texture.7,8 In the present investigation the isothermal rate of annealing of cold worked polycrystalline zirconium has been studied by X-ray techniques, metallography, and by hardness measurement. It will be shown that, rather than by the usual nucleation and growth mechanism,"12 the process of annealing can best be explained by the formation of domains early in the annealing treatment and the subsequent growth of these domains without recrystallization. Experimental Procedure All the experimental work was performed on an arc-melted ingot of high purity zirconium crystal bar made by Westinghouse in a production scale deBoer unit. The weight percentage of impurities in the zirconium were as follows: C, 0.04; Fe, 0.05; Hf, 0.014; W, 0.01; Ti, Ni, and Al, 0.003; Si and N, 0.002; Cr and Cu, 0.001. Metallographically the zirconium showed only a single phase. The 4 in. diarn ingot was forged at 760°C to a 1 1/2x3 in. plate and was then rolled at 760°C to 0.150 in. thickness and annealed at this temperature for 20 min to produce an equiaxed grain structure of about 0.1 mm average grain diameter. The hot rolled plate was roller-leveled, surface ground to 0.135 in., cold rolled 83 pct reduction in thickness on a two-high mill, and then to a total reduction of 97 pct on a Sendzimir mill. The 0.004 in. strip material so produced received no subsequent mechanical treatment. Specimens % in. square were sheared from the rolled strip and isothermally annealed at 104 mm Hg in an all glass vacuum system equipped with a Vycor furnace tube. The temperature data presented are the average temperatures during the runs and did not vary more than about k3"C. X-ray Diffraction Methods: When zirconium is drastically cold rolled, a high degree of preferred orientation results in which prism poles, {1010}, are perpendicular to the rolling direction. (communication to the Secretary.)*—Mr. Johnson&apos;s explanation, that the rounding of the graphite masses in oxygen-bearing cast iron is due to their being in part reprecipitated after re-solution in forming carbonic oxide temporarily with.that oxygen, is certainly most attractive and suggestive. It remains to be shown whether this rounding occurs also when the solidification is too rapid to permit this process to go on. J. E. Johnson might easily test this by casting a single ladleful of his oxygenated iron in masses of varying size. If this present hypothesis is true, then the rounding ought to increase progressively with the size of the casting, and with the distance from the outside, that is to say with the time available for re-solution and reprecipitation. I question whether a like benefit is to be expected even on this hypothesis, from the oxygenation of steel. The spheroidizing of graphite does good because graphite itself is so weak. But the constituent which can be spheroidized in steel is its cementite, which is a source of strength. Lamellar pearlite, in which this cementite in effect forms long den-drites, is far stronger than divorced pearlite, in which these dendrites have been broken up into spheroids. Even the surfaces of contact between ferrite and cementite are probably sources of strength because of the amorphous iron which probably fills them.

When the suggestion was made by Major General Leonard Wood that the Institute assist in the formation of a National Reserve Corps of - Engineers, Dr. Drinker&apos;s name occurred first to the Board of Directors as the man who would be most capable of carrying out the proposed plan. Dr. Drinker has long been associated with work in connection with military training and is at present the Chairman of the Governing Committee on Military Training Camps Association which is having such important results at Plattsburg and other places in this country. As Chairman of the Institute&apos;s Committee on National Reserve Corps of Engineers, Dr. Drinker was a member of the Joint Conference Committee of the National Engineering Societies .on. this subject., He was an earnest worker in the movement, which, has finally resulted in definite legislation by Congress; whereby a Reserve Corps of Engineers is authorized in the new Army Bill which became effective July 1, 1916. Notice of the results of the work was sent to all the members of the National Engineering Societies early in July, and the and the Department of the United States has recently issued a circular which has been sent to all the members of the National Engineering: Societies, as well, as to many other engineers, outlining, the line, whereby engineers may enroll themselves in the Officers Reserve Corps. Dr. Drinker has, therefore, fulfilled the mission which he undertook when assuming the Chairmanship of the Institute&apos;s Committee. He now asks the permission of the Board of Directors to withdraw as Chairman and has requested that he be replaced in this position by Mr. Arthur S. Dwight, in; the belief that the Chairmanship of the Institute&apos;s Committee and, membership on the Joint Committee should be vested in a man ,located in New York City, for the better carrying put of the important work now before the Joint Committee. We are happy to say that Dr. Drinker has consented to remain a member of the Institute&apos;s Committee; but the completion of the first phase of his work; as,Chairman, should not be allowed, to pass without an expression of appreciation on behalf of the Institute for his services.

This is the third paper in a series on the diffusion of zinc in alpha brass.&apos; At the time of the first paper it was accepted that diffusion in a substitutional type of solid solution depended upon an equal interchange of solute and solvent atoms across the diffusion interface (or past a given lattice reference point). Discrepancies in the size of the areas under the diffusion curves on each side of the interface, if observed, were explained on some other basis than the fact that the solute atoms might cross the diffusion interface without an equal number of solvent atoms diffusing across the interface in the opposite direction. The second paper presented evidence indicating that zinc atoms in alpha brass diffuse across the interface more rapidly in one direction than the copper atoms diffuse across the interface in the opposite direction. This phenomenon forced the interface to move in the opposite direction of the diffusion of zinc atoms to provide space for the additional zinc atoms dissolved in the alpha brass. That the interface and columnar grain structure on one side would remain intact during this mass movement was not expected; how ever, it is gratifying that they did. While the evidence was sufficiently satisfying to the author, it was decided that additional experiments were in order to prove that zinc diffuses more rapidly than copper in alpha brass. It is the purpose of this paper to present the results of these experiments. Procedure A bar of 70-30 wrought brass was selected, to avoid the relatively large volume change in going from beta to alpha brass as in the previous investigation. A bar 7 in. (18-cm.)* long and about 3/4 in. (1.9 cm.) wide was surface ground and polished with abrasive paper on plate glass to 0.4184 0.0002 in. (1.062j + 0.0005 cm.) thick. Six0.00j-in. (0.013-cm.) diameter molybdenum wires, chosen because of their very low solubility in coppcr and alpha brass, were strctched lengthwise along each of the two plane surfaces. Glass tubes placed at right angles to the wires every 1/2 in. held the wires tightly against the brass. The sample was then emersed in an acid copper sulphate plating bath and electroplated to a depth of about 0.020 in. (0.050 cm.) copper on all sides. IN a previous paper,1 the use of a split graphite tube resistor as a heater element for high-temperature furnaces has been described. The principal advantages of this type of construction are: I. The quadruple resistance or voltage compared with the top-bottom clamp resistor furnace. 2. Free expansion of the resistor. 3. The ease of protection from oxidation by air. 4. The firmness by which it may be held in the compact split clamp. This construction appeared to be well adapted for the fusion of high melting metals which require fusion in a vacuum. Zirconium metal had previously been melted at the Albany Laboratory of the Bureau of Mines in a vacuum arc furnace on a water-cooled plate, using a movable tungsten top electrode.2 When larger furnace capacities were desired, this type of construction proved to have its limitations as the largest tungsten rods available were about 7/8in. in diameter. The supply of direct current of high amperage for producing the . desired arc characteristics was also not available. Considerable difficulty was also found in compensating the atmospheric pressure on the flexible tubing of the movable electrode, at the same time keeping its movement sufficiently free to enable the striking of an arc on any part of the metal briquet. Among the various materials used for the electrodes in conducting experiments in the vacuum arc furnace was graphite. It was found that zirconium fused in a graphite cup with a carbon arc was contaminated to only 0.2 pct carbon. It was therefore decided to melt zirconium directly in graphite crucibles. A high-frequency furnace was first used in the attempt to melt the zirconium in graphite crucibles. The high-frequency heating coil was placed outside a silica tube which was evacuated by means of an oil diffusion pump backed up by a mechanical pump. The graphite crucible was thoroughly degassed at 1900°C before use. Considerable difficulty was experienced in operating at such temperatures in vacuo because, as shown by Zintl,3 carbon vapor formed and reacted with silica according to the reaction: Si02 + C = SiO + CO. The silicon monoxide which is volatile at these high temperatures reacted with the zirconium, thereby contaminating it with silicon and oxygen. The presence of carbon monoxide was detected by means of a gas discharge tube placed in the vacuum system as indicated by the pale blue glow of the tube as soon as carbon vapor started to react with the hot silica. The reaction between the carbon vapor and hot silica was avoided by the use of split cylindrical molybdenum shields which were inserted between the graphite crucible
