Determination of the Hf-C phase diagram was conducted primarily by metallographic and X-ray diffraction studies on appropriate alloys. The only intermediate phase observed in this binary system was HfC. This phase was found to be homogeneous between 34.0 and 48.0 at. pct C at 2200°c and between 36.0 and 49.3 at. pct C at 3150°C. The lattice-parameter variation was also determined for HfCI-, compositions prepared at 2200° and 3150°C. The most most refractory composition, with a melting point of 3830°c, was established at 47.5 at. pct C from melting-point data. Solidus temperatures of 2240' and 3150°C occur on the high-kafnium and high-carbon sides of the monocarbide, respectively. The invariant point between HfC and carbon is located at 66.0 at. pct C, whereas the 2240°C solidus corresponds to the peritectic temperature at which hafnium is formed from HfC and hafnium-rick liquid. Hafnium has a melting temperature of 2208°C and is capable of taking carbon into solution to the extent of 10.5 at. pct at this temperature. ALTHOUGH the Hf-C phase diagram has not been previously evaluated experimentally in its entirety, the belief has been that the general configuration would resemble the chemically similar Group rV carbide systems, Ti-C and Zr-c.' These binaries are characterized by a single carbide phase with a simple NaC1-type structure which is maintained over wide compositional ranges. This family of carbides has high thermal stability that increases substantially as the atomic number of the metal component increases. This trend characterizes HfC as one of the highest melting materials. According to Agte and Alterthum,2 the melting point for this monocarbide is 3890°C, a value that has been quoted quite extensively for the past several decades. Recently, in repeating the work of Agte and Alter-thum, Adams and Beall3 determined the melting point of HfC to be 3895°C. A significant departure from the commonly accepted version of the Hf-C system was reported by Avarbe and his coworkers,4 who proposed that there is an extreme stabilization of a hafnium in a narrow field to 2820°C, above which it melts peritectically to form HfC and liquid. Their study was also concerned with the melting temperature of various HfCI-, compositions, but the peak melting point was taken from the work of Agte and Alterthum. Avarbe and his associates were not concerned with the high-carbon region of the system. However, three widely varying temperatures have been reported for the HfC-C solidus by other investigators. Cotter and Kohn5 observed approximately 2800°C; Portnoy et al.' reported 3260°C; and, more recently, Krikorian7 indicated 2915°C. Equally as uncertain is the solidus between hafnium and HfC. As noted above, Avarbe et al. report a peritectic temperature of 2820°C, Krikorian7 measured 2150°C, and Benesovsky and Rudy' estimated 2000°C on their diagram. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The starting materials for this study consisted of reactor-grade hafnium hydride obtained from Fair-mount Chemical Co., Newark, N.J., hafnium carbide supplied by Wah Chang Corp., Albany, Ore., and Union Carbide spectroscopic-grade graphite, SP-1. The graphite analysis indicated impurities at levels of only 0.5 ppm or less. According to the suppliers, the hydride and carbide contained the typical impurities listed in Table I. The samples required for these studies were prepared by dry blending either graphite and hafnium hydride or hafnium hydride and hafnium carbide powders for approximately 5 min in a "Spex Mixer Mill". The preparation and fabrication of copper-manganese-zinc alloys and the evaluation of their engineering properties have for some time been an integral part of a research program of the Federal Bureau of Mines. In this project, the use of electrolytic manganese, along with high purity copper and zinc, has permitted the preparation of alloys which contain a minimum of impurities which are capable of producing detectable effects in the properties studied. The initial work on the physical properties of wrought alpha solid solution alloys and a general outline of the alpha solid solution area for alloys containing up to 40 pct manganese have been presented in previous reports. 1,2,3,4,5 The evidence accumulated in these investigations clearly showed that additions of manganese to the copper-zinc alloys improve the strength properties of the brasses without seriously reducing their characteristic ductility and that considerable quantities of manganese could be added to the copper-zinc alloys without exceeding the mutual solubilities of manganese and zinc in copper. In continuation of these studies, additional data have been obtained in a more extensive investigation of the phase relationships of the copper-manganese-zinc ternary system. The present report delineates the solid phase boundaries of the ternary system from the copper-zinc binary to the manganese-zinc binary for alloys containing up to 50 pct zinc. Summary The alloys used in this investigation were conditioned by working schedules designed to homogenize the structures prior to heat treatments required for the equilibrium phase sludy. The treated alloys were examined by metallographic methods including hardness and X ray data for confirmation. The composite data of the investigation are summarily presented in a series of isothermal sections of the ternary system at 1100, 1200, 1300, 1200, and 1500°F. The salient features of the system as outlined by these data are: (1) the continuous alpha solid solution which extends across the diagram to the gamma-manganese phase of the manganese-zinc system at temperatures of 1200°F and higher, (2) the beta phase of the copper-zinc system similarly forms a continuous solid solution with its counterpart the beta field of the manganese-zinc binary, (3) at 1100°F (593°C) these alpha and beta fields are greatly restricted by complications arising from the allotropic transitions of manganese and the decreasing solubility of manganese in the alpha solid solution. The alpha + beta fields intersect the alpha + alpha manganese field to produce the beta + alpha manganese field and two adjacent three phase fields consisting of alpha + beta + alpha manganese and gamma + beta + alpha manganese. Typical microstructures representative of the various phase areas at each temperature are also presented. For many years, coal has been known to exist in the valley of the Sabinas river, in the State of Coahuila, and for about 15 years it has been worked by the Mexican International Railway Co., which opened mines for its own fuel-supply when the railway was built, and has been mining continuously ever since. The coal-basin worked by this company lies along the Sabinas river, principally on the SW. side. It covers a wide area and has been carefully prospected, but only in a few parts have the beds been found sufficiently thick and regular for economical operation. This Sabinas basin was considered the only one in this field, until, in the Spring of 1899, the Las Esperanzas basin was found by Messrs. J. L. Elliot and E. D. Peters, who were in Mexico looking after some copper-properties. After a further examination by Mr. James T. Gardiner, of New York, the Mexican Coal & Coke Co. was organized in June, and active work was begun on Nov. 5, 1899. The coal-field of Las Esperanzas, situated in the State of Coahuila, about 85 miles SW. of Eagle Pass, Texas, adjoins and runs parallel with the Sabinas basin—an anticlinal separating the two outcrops by about 2 miles. Fig. 1 is a sketch-map of a part of the basin. The coal-formation is in the Upper Cretaceous, and corresponds with the Laramie measures of the United States. Two types of decline curves are considered and their applications are discussed. The first is the well-known semilogarithmic decline curve having the rate of production plotted on the logarithmic scale and the time on the horizontal scale. The other curve is the percentage of oil in the fluid versus cumulative production, and it is plotted on Cartesian coordinate paper. These curves are illustrated by carefully and adequately labeled graphs. Where conditions permit application of both types of curves for rationally determining the reserves of a well, both should be applied and the most conservative reserve should be chosen. Formulas are given for determining the economic limits. For a semi-l~~arithmic~decline curve the formula is: A = B X C X D X E X F or B = A/C ? D X E X F A = total monthly operating cost (average of past year), B = economic limit in barrels of oil per day, C = days in an average month = 30.4, D = market price of crude per barrel, E = 1-royalty, F = 1-gross production tax, G = water production in barrels per day at the economic limit, H =per cent oil in fluid at economic limit. The economic limit for a per cent oil in the fluid curve is: H = B/B+G X 100 The semilogarithmic decline curve is treated first. ORDERING reactions of Fe-Si compositions in the a region have been mentioned in a number of review articles.7-8 However, little is known in regard to the critical temperature, T at which this transformation takes place. Greiner and Stoughton,' in a study of the constitution of iron-rich Fe-Si alloys below 800°C, placed the onset of order at a composition of about 4 to 5 wt pct (7.5 to 9.5 atomic pct) Si. They observed that at this composition the ductility and strength begin to decrease sharply and brittleness develops. During X-ray studies they observed only the appearance of superlattice lines for compositions containing 12.5 atomic pct Si. More recent X-ray diffraction studies- etected the appearance of superstructure lines (corresponding to the calculated positions of [Ill] and [ZOO] reflections) for alloys containing 9.5 atomic pct. This fact confirms Greiner and Stoughton's original hypothesis in regard to the onset of order at compositions containing about 7.5 to 9.5 atomic pct Si. The physical properties.of Fe-Si alloys containing more than 10 atomic pct Si have been studied only to a limited extent. Their extreme brittleness and difficulties of sample preparation render them of little industrial use in comparison with alloys in the 0 to 10 atomic pct Si range. The properties of Fe-Si alloys reported to date are mostly properties measured at room temperature on ordered compositions It appears that because of experimental difficulties fully disordered alloys could not be produced in the critical composition ranges and their properties could therefore not be reported. In Figs. la, lb, and lc, a summary of physical properties of Fe-Si alloys, measured during recent investigations of the influence of silicon additions to iron, is presented. No mention of determination of the critical temperature, T for disorder could be found in the literature. The following is an account of work done in an attempt to: 1) produce the disordered state of various Fe-Si alloys and establish the critical temperature, T for disordering, and 2) compare the electrical and thermal conductivity characteristics of the ordered and disordered phases as functions of composition. Materials, Preparation of Test Samples, and Testing Methods Fe-Si alloys with high silicon contents (about 10 atomic pct) are usually prepared using powder metallurgy techniques. This method insures accurate compositions and high purity through the use of protective atmospheres during solid state diffusion alloying of the mixed powders."" Iron and silicon powders were mixed in the desired proportions, cold or hot pressed, and then homogenized at 1150°C for periods ranging from 6 to 12 hr under a protective getter and in a hydrogen atmosphere. Fully homogenized samples were quenched in water from various and successively higher temperatures to establish the critical temperature for disorder. Temperatures were determined using Pt—Pt-Rh thermocouples in contact with the test samples. Test bars were approximately 0.6x1.25x7.5 cm. Electrical measurements were made at room temperature by determining the potential drop over a 1.5 cm span for a current of 10 amp. Densities of the samples were determined by immersion. High temperature electrical resistivities were measured using previously described techniques.'" Specific heat conductivity up to 200°C was measured by heating one end of the test bar and water-cooling the other; heat conductivity was then obtained by subtracting the rate at which heat entered the water from the

The influence of temperature and composition on the viscosity of high-purity liquid metals and alloys of the Pb-Sn and Sb-Cd systems was investigated by the logarithmic-decrement method. The variation of viscosity with temperature above the liquidus followed the equation: n = AeE/RT No large increase in viscosity was found just before normal freezing of any of the metals or alloys investigated. Certain alloys, supercooled below their stable liquidus, however, did show a marked increase in viscosity. Experimental activation energies for viscosity were determined for the metals investigated. Liquid-metal density values were obtained by a modified Joeger's method. IK an investigation of the properties of molten metals, the study of viscosity as a suitable means for studying the physical nature of the metallic liquid state has been utilized. Although interest in the relationship of the liquid to the solid-metal state holds promise of broadening the knowledge of metals in general, much information that is available regarding the influence of temperature and composition on viscosity, especially near the freezing point, is still controversial. The purpose of this paper is to present the results of recent work on this subject. Although interest in factors influencing the fluid behavior of metals and alloys has arisen from theoretical as well as applied studies of liquid-metal properties, the development of a comprehensive theory of the mechanism of viscosity has been handicapped because so little is known about the liquid state. Several theories of viscosity have been proposed and among the more recent are those of Andrade,1 Bernal,2 Frenkel,3 Eyring,4 and Gutmann and Simmons.5 Athough these contributions have helped to establish a basis of approach for studying the nature of viscosity, the fundamental aspects of the variation of viscosity with alloy composition have, in general, been neglected. The most extensive oil shale development program ever undertaken in the United States has been that carried out by Colony Development Operation at Para- chute Creek in western Colorado. Field development goals were completed this spring, with the remainder of the $24 million joint venture program, primarily engineering, environmental and economic analysis, due to be finished by the end of 1972. Upon completion of the overall program, a decision concerning a commercial venture is expected. This program points up the increasing attention being focused on oil shale as a source of crude oil and energy for the U.S. at a time when the nation's supply of oil produced by conventional methods is far from adequate to meet the demand. The oil shale reserves of the Green River formation in Colorado, Utah and Wyoming are the largest hydrocarbon reservoir. The Piceance basin of Colorado, alone, contains some 80 billion bbl of shale oil recoverable by modern methods in reserves more than 30 ft thick and containing at least 30 gal of oil per ton. The U.S. Geological Survey has estimated that the total shale oil reserves of the Green River formation in the states of Colorado, Utah and Wyoming is more than 600 billion bbl of oil in deposits containing at least 25 gal per ton of shale oil.

It is my purpose to give some of the results obtained by an experience of nearly seven years in working ores by the method frequently called the Washoe Process, and in several mills of which I have had charge, but principally in the Owyhee Mill, at Silver City, Idaho, which had twenty 650-pound stamps, and sixteen pans. I shall discuss here merely the mechanical details for working ores generally, subdividing the subject as follows : 1. Preparation of the ore for the stamps; 2. The crushing in the battery; 3. The settling of sand or pulp in vats or tanks; 4. The treatment in the pans; 5. The results obtained in settlers, agitators, and concentrators; 6. The straining of quicksilver, cleaning of amalgam, and retorting; 7. The saving of slimes and their subsequent treatment; 8. The loss of quicksilver. For descriptions of the various kinds of orebreakers, stamps, tanks, pans, settlers, etc., I must refer to the various works on these subjects, prominent among which are the reports of the United States Commissioner of Mining Statistics,and the volume on "Mining Industry," the third volume of the United States Geological Survey on the Line of the Fortieth Parallel through the gold and silver bearing regions of the great West, undertaken under the able guidance of Clarence King, assisted by Mr. James D. Hague and others. In this discussion it will be assumed that the general arrangement of the quartz mill is understood; and the question will be treated how to secure, from such a mill, the greatest economy in working, combined with the largest results. This place seems fittest for a single preliminary suggestion—namely, that there should be double "floors" throughout the mill, so that nothing can sift through and be lost.

When Professor Silliman made his first examination of the newly-discovered Pennsylvania rock oil in 1859, he noted that different rates of heating produced different results in fractionation—longer heating produced larger percentages of light fractions. In 1862, it was found that when petroleum vapors are condensed in the still crown and dropped back into the hot liquid, the result of the distilling operation is materially modified. These early dates mark the beginning of what is called cracking petroleum and is explained as separating the component parts of the hydrocarbon molecules into more and smaller groups of the same elements. The phenomena were utilized for the next 30 years to increase the yield of burning oil. The procedure was that regularly practiced today in dry or destructive distillation. Considerable scientific study was given to the subject from 1862 to 1905, and a number of patents were obtained, but the work done was not continuous or intensive until about 1905, when the increasing demand for gasoline attracted attention of petroleum refiners to the possibilities of cracking. The first equipment built and operated essentially for cracking petroleum on a large scale was placed in successful operation in 1912. The commercial practice is, therefore, less than 15 years old. Comprehensive intense study of the controlling factors during this period has resulted in rapid increase in our knowledge, and material improvement has been made in the practice of the art. It is the purpose of this paper to outline briefly the state of our knowledge and to suggest some of the questions which are attracting attention of researchers at the present time. The major purposes for which petroleum hydrocarbons, including natural gas, are or have been cracked are: 1. To obtain products used to increase the heat value and illuminant content of artificial gas. 2. During the World War, to increase the supply of toluol. 3. To increase the amount of products capable of conversion into industrial chemicals. 4. To produce pure carbon.

Si-Fe single crystals in a number of selected orientations were cold rolled 70 pct and analyzed to obtain quantitative (110) pole figures. Stable end orientations were ddetermined, and the effect of orientation on deformation behavior was investigated. WHEN single crystals are cold rolled sufficiently, they rotate into end orientations that are stable or unchanged in position with additional deformation. The end orientations of heavily cold-rolled iron crystals, positioned in holes in copper to limit lateral flow and to simulate polycrystalline conditions during deformation, were determined by Barrett and Levenson.' They found that the sum of the end orientations, a pole figure for all the crystals studied, reproduced the essential features of the cold-rolled texture of polycrystalline iron. In. an investigation of Fe-Si alloys, Barrett, Ansel, and Mehl' observed little effect of silicon content on the textures of heavily cold-rolled samples. Since alloys with less than 4 pct Si are known to have the same slip systems as iron," it seems logical to expect that they would also have the same end orientations as those for iron. Whereas Barrett and Levenson in their study of single crystals were interested in the problem of the origin of the cold-rolled texture of polycrystalline iron, the present authors are more interested in the final cold-rolled textures of single crystals of Si-Fe from the point of view of their relationship to subsequent recrystallization phenomena which will be reported in another paper. Nevertheless, such points as the tendency of an end orientation not to rotate (stability), the tendency of a pole concentration to spread out, and the tendency of the crystal to widen during cold rolling become interesting separately when the initial orientations are selected already in end orientations. Also the initial orientations having a [I101 axis parallel with the transverse direction, which include the two end orientations (111) [Ti21 and (001) [110], comprise a series that needs further clarification regarding the way such crystals rotate during deformation. Finally the present use of quantitative pole figure methods* represents an advance over the X-ray photographic method employed by Barrett and Levenson in their work on end orientations. The present investigation provides information on the cold-rolling behavior of two groups of Si-Fe crystals: 1-—crystals initially oriented in recognized end orientations for iron crystals with a [I101 direction parallel with the rolling direction, and 2— crystals initially oriented with a [I101 direction 90" to the rolling direction and in the rolling plane. For the second group, there is a 90" range between the (001) [110] orientation and the (110) [001] orientation. Since the 35" portion of this range from (110) [OOl] to (111) Di2] was included in a previous investigation," only the remaining 55" portion from (111) fii2] to (001) [I101 needs further consideration. Also, since both (111) [xi21 and (001) [I101 are end orientations for iron crystals,' there might be a critical orientation* or orientation range be- • W. W. Martin and C. G. Upon further deformation, these two orientations rotate to produce a final texture consisting of (001) [1101 and (111) [?i2] components. The end orientations obtained are discussed in connection with the work of Barrett and Levenson, while the observed tendency for lateral flow of crystals in these orientations is treated in terms of the theory of Hibbard and Yen.' Lateral flow according to the theory increases with deviation of the plane containing the rolling direction and the slip direction from a position perpendicular to the plane of rolling. THE outstanding fact in connection with dust disease in. the United States at present is the growing recognition of its seriousness by state officials and by the more progressive operators of mining, metallurgical and allied industrial plants. The same may perhaps be said of labor in some. of its better organized centers, but the average independent non-. union workman continues, as of yore, to suffer the toll of disability and. even of death from dust inhalation without realization of the source of his ill-being. Progress in the betterment of the handling of sufferers from dust disease and of the conditions creating dust hazards in mining and allied industries is pursuing a course similar to that of the now widespread campaign against accidents, in which the risk is more obvious, more severe, and was naturally recognized sooner. The coming on of dust disease is generally relatively slow and its immediate effects not infre-quently masked by or attributed to other diseases. Marked exceptions to this general rule have occurred in districts where the dust is particularly pernicious, such as the Rand and Joplin; yet such exceptions, unhappy in themselves, opened the eyes of medical men, and of those in other localities charged with the responsibility for the welfare of industry, to the much more widespread if less spectacular hazard existing from the inhalation of. dust in all rock-excavating operations and all industrial operations creating inorganic dust, whether it be crushing and grinding, sand-blast-ing, granite-cutting, or what not. THE outstanding fact in connection with dust disease in the United States at present is the growing recognition of its seriousness by state officials and by the more progressive operators of mining, metallurgical and allied industrial plants. The same may perhaps be said of labor in some of its better organized centers, but the average independent non-union workman continues, as of yore, to suffer the toll of disability and even of death from dust inhalation without realization of the source of his ill-being. Progress in the betterment of the handling of sufferers from dust disease and of the conditions creating dust hazards in mining and allied industries is pursuing a course similar to that of the now widespread campaign against accidents, in which the risk is more obvious, more severe, and was naturally recognized sooner. The coming on of dust disease is generally relatively slow and its immediate effects not infre-quently masked by or attributed to other diseases. Marked exceptions to this general rule have occurred in districts where the dust is particularly pernicious, such as the Rand and Joplin; yet such exceptions, unhappy in themselves, opened the eyes of medical men, and of those in other localities charged with the responsibility for the welfare of industry, to the much more widespread if less spectacular hazard existing from the inhalation of dust in all rock-excavating operations and all industrial operations creating inorganic dust, whether it be crushing and grinding, sand-blast-ing, granite-cutting, or what not.
