Public lands in Florida were first withdrawn from entry by President Taft on July 2, 1910, as a conservation measure because of their possible phosphate content. The reserve thus established was subsequently modified by further withdrawals and by restorations, so that on Jan. 1, 1934, it contained 66,796 acres, of which only a small part had been definitely classified. The reserved land was in scattered parcels, ranging from less than 40 acres to 320 or more, distributed in many counties. For administrative purposes and for final disposal of any of the numerous parcels, mineral classification of the land is legally necessary. In 1934 and 1935 the United States Geological Survey, under two successive grants from the Public Works Administration, prospected some 83 tracts of these lands in Polk County, comprising in all about 3300 acres, and six tracts comprising 240 acres in Citrus and Marion Counties. The tracts in Polk County were all in the so-called land-pebble field and the others in the hard-rock field. The Survey field party was under the direction of P. V. Roundy, from whose unpublished report the material in this paper is largely taken. The foreman of the prospecting crew was J. H. Wingate of Zephyrhills, Fla. The individual tracts were identified through the cooperation of the General Land Office, by transitman Hugh B. Crawford. This prospecting work fitted well the classification adopted for Public Works projects in general: it could not be done on any considerable scale under the Survey's usual appropriations; it gave employment to unemployed labor; and it may be expected ultimately to repay the Government in royalties more than the cost of the exploration. Commercial, Prospecting Methods Commercial methods of prospeeting for phosphate in Florida have been briefly described by Mansfield.' THIS paper is not a treatise on the theory and practice of magnetic surveying. It merely presents a diagram upon which have been plotted observations taken with the simplest form of magnetic instrument, the lowly dip needle, over a large area astride the Lake Superior syncline of northern Wisconsin. The exposures of the underlying formations are not sufficiently great in number nor fortunate in distribution to have provided the fuller understanding of the geology which has been secured by the use of the magnetic observations as an auxiliary tool or accessory in the hands of the geologist. The diagram (Fig. 2) in large part speaks for itself if studied in connection with the geological map (Fig. 1) for which it is the main control. It is presented to demonstrate the extent to which the use of such methods may aid in the solution of geological problems in a covered country. The diagram is probably unique in assembling the expression of such a wide range of formations, affected by so wide a range of secondary processes, and deformed by so many different structures in terms of magnetic variation. Few geologists outside of the Lake Superior country have had any first-hand experience in the taking of magnetic observations and the interpretations of the results in terms of geological conditions; nor have the Lake Superior men gone with the methods far afield from the mere tracing of iron formations. In more recent years the oil companies have gone heavily into investments in magnetometers, balances, and dip needles in the quest of concealed structural anomalies which are the favorable loci of petroleum accumulation. But these geophysicists come back from the fields with their collections of observations facing the question of interpreting the geological meaning of their magnetic anomalies.

A proper consideration of this subject is not confined to the technical channels of production and metallurgy. It concerns an industry, and should cover economic aspects which are of material importance in any program of development. The discussion may logically be treated under three subdivisions, as follows: (1) manufacture, (2) characteristics related to quality of material; (3) adaptability and exploitation of product. Manufacture of Wrought Iron The manufacture of wrought iron is the most ancient art of the ferrous metal industry. The eighty years or less of existence of processes identified with our modern "Age of Steel" is a relatively brief interval compared with the several thousand years associated with the production of wrought iron by man. From the primitive early methods of production, manufacture for many centuries followed the line of direct reduction. There were developments as experience was gained through the years; but man's needs for a strong, ductile, forgeable product were met by reducing the ore to metallic iron in a single-stage operation. Following the development several centuries ago of what has become our modern blast-furnace operation, manufacture of wrought iron was gradually transformed into a two-stage method of first producing cast iron and then refining this to the desired degree of forgeability; the forerunner in principle of today's scheme of manufacture of steel. The product retained the essential characteristics of highly refined base metal with iron-silicate slag incorporation, which were associated with the material resulting from direct reduction methods. Cort's invention of the puddling process in 1784 is a landmark in wrought-iron manufacture. THE effect of thoria (ThO2) on grain growth in tungsten was discussed in some detail in a paper presented before this Institute by one, of the authors in 1918.1 In that paper it " was assumed that the, thoria was present in the tungsten entirely as a mechanical mixture. There was no indication in the experiments described that even a trace of the thoria was in solid solution in the tungsten. Langmuir,2 however, observed that thoriated-tungsten filaments under certain conditions showed electron emissions many thousand times greater than unthoriated tungsten at the same temperature. He concluded from his studies that a slight amount of the thoria had dissociated on heating the filament to a temperature near 220°. C. At this temperature and higher, part of the thorium diffuses to the surface of the filament where it evaporates at. a much faster rate relatively, than the tungsten, and also at a rate, nearly as fast as it is brought to the surface by diffusion: If the temperature is lowered to say 1800°,. C., diffusion of the thorium atoms to the surface is more rapid than evaporation, sown adsorbed film of thorium atoms is produced on the surface of the tungsten filament. The electron emission is governed by the outside layer of atoms so the emission from such a filament might be expected to approxi¬mate that of a thorium filament at the same temperature. PRESENCE OF METALLIC THORIUM IN THORIATED TUNGSTEN If the filament containing the adsorbed film of thorium. is heated to a sufficiently high temperature, the thorium atoms evaporate: rapidly and the electron emission becomes more nearly that of tungsten. On cooling again to 1800° C., or thereabouts, the emission 'builds up gradually to a maximum. The filament containing the adsorbed layer of thorium atoms is said to be "activated." The results of a study of the open-hearth process from the physicochemical view-point are given. This study includes experimentation in small laboratory furnaces and in standard 100-ton furnaces. The behavior of manganese, carbon, and phosphorus are quantitatively explained. The action of "residual" manganese is discussed with reference to its relation to iron oxide dissolved in the metal. The solubility of CO in steel and its relation to dissolved FeO and carbon is given. The equation for phosphorus elimination has been tested out on a 200-ton furnace and the results are given in the text. THE effect of temperature and slag composition on the elimination of metalloids in the basic open-hearth process has been qualitatively understood since the early days of steel making. The quantitative effect has, however, only recently been brought to attention. The effect of slag composition has received more attention than that of temperature, primarily because the range of finishing temperatures in the basic open-hearth process is small compared to the large variations found in the composition of the slag at different periods during the process, and to the variations occurring with the use of raw materials of different degrees of impurity. The effect of slag composition on the elimination of metalloids has been studied by Styri1 from the thermochemical standpoint. This method is open to serious errors, in that thermochemical data at 2900° F. are very inaccurate and in many cases completely lacking. Feild2 has calculated equilibrium constants from the rate at which the metalloids are eliminated. The effect of slag viscosity on rate of elimination will affect the constants calculated by this method. Whitely,3 Colcough4 and others have used slag compositions as the basis for calculation of constants by which the extent of elimination may be calculated.

In extension of a suggestion already made to account for certain features observed in the Juneau gold-belt in southeastern Alaska,' it is the object of the present paper to indicate in detail certain conditions in which deformation of rocks under their own weight might lead to the production of fractures in which veins could be deposited. A direct, uniformly-distributed pressure of sufficient intensity, applied to an elastic brittle mass offering strung resistance to deformation, produces rupture. In a material of ideal properties the surfaces of rupture under such pressure would be shearing planes inclined at 45' to the line of force, unless there be preliminary deformation, in which case this angle would be greater than 45. This general conclusion, resting upon analytical mechanics, is completely supported by the results obtained by DaubrBe2 in experiments upon the deformation of wax and resin prisms under compression. Let us then first consider one of Daubree's diagrams. In the case illustrated in Fig. 1, four sets of fractures in two approximately right-angled pairs (that is to say, in conjugate sets) were produced by endwise compression of a square cross-sectioned prism. These fractures cut the axis of compression at approximately equal angles, not varying greatly from 45o. The location of the four sets of fractures is obviously determined by the shape of the prism, since the material in each corner acts in a way as a buttress, permitting the bulging to take place most readily on the sides. This article proposes a physical model for an idealized binary mineral system and for the process of liberation by size reduction. Based on this model, equations are derived relating the amount of each component liberated as a function of the ratio of the volumetric abundance of the two mineral components and the ratio of the mineral grain size to particle size. A definite relationship is shown to exist between the mineral concentration within a locked particle and the frequency of occurrence of such a particle. These relationships are used to obtain theoretical expressions for the concentration-recovery diagram. Physical mineral beneficiation processes are based on breaking a mineral aggregate to liberate the dissimilar mineral grains and then making use of their physical properties to separate the mixture into its components. The effectiveness of the process is therefore dependent on how well the minerals are liberated and how efficiently they are separated. Although a substantial amount of work is being done to improve our understanding of mineral separation processes, the study of mineral liberation itself has been almost completely neglected. The purpose of this theoretical study is to shed some light on the liberation phenomenon by: 1) proposing a physical model for an ideal binary mineral system, 2) treating mathematically the fracture of this system into liberated and locked particles, and 3) deriving an expression for the liberation characteristics of this system. The results of this study are useful in understanding the effect and importance of various parameters in liberation, and provide a basis for comparison with real mineral systems. 'RANDOM' MODEL It is recognized that liberation can be caused by detachment which results from fractures occurring at the mineral grain boundaries, or by size reduction which restricts the occurrence of dissimilar mineral locking to a portion of the resulting particles. The detachment effect is dependent on the relative strengths of the mineral grains and the bonds between them, and must be treated empirically for each mineral system. The size reduction effect, however, can be treated analytically if certain assumptions are made concerning the shape and geometrical arrangement of the mineral grains.

By means of a continuum-mechanics approach, the following equation for calculuting the pressure for axisymmetric cold forging has been derived: where P is the extrusion pressure; K and n are the strength coefficient and the strain-hardening exponent of the steel, respectively; a and b are strain factors, primarily dependent on the die design; and R is the extrusion ratio. Data from compression and backward-extrusion tests performed at a crosshead speed of 0.5 in. per min on a nonwork-hardening material pure lead) and on a work-hardening material (1018 steel) indicate that the predicted extrusion pressures obtained from the derived equation agree very closely with the actual extrusion pressures. Therefore, the equation can be used to predict backward-extrusion pressures from standard mechanical-test data. The decision to cold-forge a part is based on several considerations, most of them related to economics. However, the production feasibility is usually determined by the pressure needed to extrude the part and the availability of tooling that can repeatedly sustain this pressure for over several hundred thousand cycles. A major contribution to the cold forging of steel would result from the development of steels that could be forged at reduced pressures and from the development of techniques that permit the accurate prediction of the pressure necessary to cold-forge the part. The ability to predict extrusion pressures is necessary to properly design the tooling required for the cold-forging process. Attempts to theoretically predict the cold-forging pressure, especially for work-hardening materials, have been unsuccessful in previous investigations of the cold-forging process.1-3 Many empirical relations have, therefore, been proposed relating the extrusion pressure to the chemical composition,' the extrusion ratio,2 the tensile strength,273 and hard- ness, 2 and the yield strength3 of the material being extruded. However, these empirical relations are valid only for the specific conditions used in their development, and, in some cases, the empirical relations had a scatter band greater than * 10 pct. A study of the extrusion process was undertaken with the objective of developing predictor equations for extrusion pressure by using a continuum-mechanics approach to the problem of metal flow. The derivation of such an equation is summarized in this paper, and data are presented that confirm the validity of the derived equation. DERIVATION OF THE EXTRUSION EQUATION If the extrusion of a material through a die is considered in terms of a work balance, it has been shown that it is possible to derive an equation relating the work necessary to move the material through the die to the deformation work undergone by the material. The work done, W, in moving the material is given by where F is the extrusion force, I, is the distance the material was moved, A, is the original cross-sectional area of the material, P is the extrusion pressure acting on A,, Ap is the cross-sectional area of the extrusion punch, and Pp is the punch pressure acting on Ap. The deformation work, WD, is given by where V is the volume of metal deformed, ay is the flow stress of the metal, and E is the total strain undergone in the extrusion. Techniques for studying the performance characteristics of heterogeneous reservoirs have been developed. The effect of permeability variation on both the steady-state and the transient flow of a single fluid has been investigated. Limited comparisons with field and laboratory data have been made. The physical models studied consist of random three-dimensional arrays of homogeneous porous blocks. The permeabilities of the individual elements are assigned according to a specific distribution function; uniform anisotropy is introduced by varying the relative dimensions of the blocks. A particular model is perturbed simply by re-arranging its elements at random. The behavior of a physical model is determined by digitally solving its numerical analogue. Based on computational experiments, subject to the restrictions implied by the assumptions that were made, the following general conclusions have been drawn. 1. The most probable behavior of a heterogeneous system approaches that of a homogeneous system with a permeability equal to the geometric mean of the individual permeabilities. 2. The effects of flow geometry and anisotropy on the most probable value of the effective permeability of a heterogeneous medium are finite but not significant. 3. The permeability determined from a pressure build-up curve lor a heterogeneous reservoir gives a reasonable value for the effective permeability of the drainage area. 4. A qualitative measure of the degree of heterogeneity and its spatial configuration are obtained from a comparative study of core analysis and pressure build-up data. It has been indicated that these conclusions are predicated on the assumption that the core analysis and the pressure build-up data represent true reservoir characteristics. Common sources of error in these data have been discussed. One of the most significant problems of reservoir engineering is that of determining the nature and the disposition of the heterogeneities that inevitably occur in petroliferous formations. It is with this problem that this paper is concerned. Extensive research, both theoretical and experimental, has provided reasonable descriptions of the physical processes that are associated with primary and secondaryrecovery mechanisms. Similar progress in the fie1d of numerical analysis and the evolution of truly high-speed digital computers have made it feasible to calculate the behavior of these mechanisms under almost any environmental conditions. It appears to be logical, then, to conclude that the mechanistic performance of any reservoir can be predicted with some confidence. Unfortunate1y, a necessary condition for the validity of this conclusion is that the formation be adequately described in a macroscopic sense. This condition cannot be satisfied ill general; therefore, a frustrating situation currently exists — it is possible to compute the effect of reservoir heterogeneity on behavior, but it is not possible to specify the heterogeneity itself. In many cases, the predicted behavior of a project is so completely dominated by irregularities in the formation's physical properties that the gratuitous assumptior, of a particular form for the variation can reduce the solution of the problem to a mere tautological exercise. While all porous media are microscopically heterogeneous, only macroscopic fluctuations need be considered since the fundamental concepts of reservoir mechanics are based on macroscopic quantities. For the simplest case in which only one physical property varies from point to point, the degree of heterogeneity that is apparent depends on three distinct factors, i.e., the nature of the property's variation (frequency distribution), its disposition (spatial distribution) and the inherent stability of the mechanism being studied. Consequently, any attempt to devise an unambiguous scale of heterogeneity must take these factors into account. Since this investigation is intended to be exploratory, it will be restricted to single-phase flow because of the simplification implied; both steady-state and unsteady-state behavior will be considered. THE outstanding fact in connection with dust disease in the United States at present is the growing recognition of its seriousness by state officials and by the more progressive operators of mining, metallurgical and allied industrial plants. The same may perhaps be said of labor in some of its better organized centers, but the average independent non-union workman continues, as of yore, to suffer the toll of disability and even of death from dust inhalation without realization of the source of his ill-being. Progress in the betterment of the handling of sufferers from dust disease and of the conditions creating dust hazards in mining and allied industries is pursuing a course similar to that of the now widespread campaign against accidents, in which the risk is more obvious, more severe, and was naturally recognized sooner. The coming on of dust disease is generally relatively slow and its immediate effects not infre-quently masked by or attributed to other diseases. Marked exceptions to this general rule have occurred in districts where the dust is particularly pernicious, such as the Rand and Joplin; yet such exceptions, unhappy in themselves, opened the eyes of medical men, and of those in other localities charged with the responsibility for the welfare of industry, to the much more widespread if less spectacular hazard existing from the inhalation of dust in all rock-excavating operations and all industrial operations creating inorganic dust, whether it be crushing and grinding, sand-blast-ing, granite-cutting, or what not. Advancement to date in the United States in prevention and treat-ment has been slow, yet the record shows that quantitative methods for determining the degree of hazard and means for decreasing it were being developed as far back as 25 years ago; and that more rapid progress may be looked for from now on. Discussion of the paper of G. P. Hulst, presented at the Salt Lake meeting, August, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 92, August, 1914, pp. 1865 to 1871. L. S. AUSTIN, Salt Lake City, Utah.-One question that I would like to ask is in regard to the sampling kettle which stands beside the softening furnace. How is the sample taken or melted? G. P. HULST.-The sampling kettles in question are of 45 tons capacity and are fired with coal. The lead bullion comes in on a high line in car-load lots of 30 to 40 tons. The entire lot is trucked from car, weighed over scales and thrown into the sampling kettle, which has been previously cleaned. The kettle is fired and the bullion melted, then heated up until no frozen bullion' remains in the .bottom or adheres to the sides of the kettle. The kettle is scraped clean, sides and bottom, and the wet dross is skimmed Doff clean into molds. The kettle is stirred thoroughly during the period in which 24 to 30 samples of approximately ½ assay ton are taken. These samples are taken in a long-hand loci iron mold, providing for taking six to eight "gumdrops." The mold is inserted and heated to the same temperature as the molten metal, and gumdrops are clipped out and cooled in the mold by dipping 'the bottom of. the mold into Water. The samples should be free from fins. The gumdrops represent the contents of the kettle, and in assaying, they should not be clipped, but weighed up and the result computed. The dross bars are weighed and sawed according to old hammer and punch sample template. The sawdust represents a sample of the dross. In eases of high gold in the bullion there is a slight correction in the assay. This method of sampling was developed at the Omaha plant of the American Smelting & Refining Co., W. T.. Page, Manager, in 1903 or 1904, for adjusting differences in checking smelter sampling. L. S. AUSTIN.-The base bullion which you treat is very clean. It has been remelted, and skimmed before shipment. How rapidly can you get it through the softening furnace, and how does it compare with ordinary base bullion? G. P. HULST.-Twenty-four hours is the softening limit on these charges. In other words, it is charged into the furnace, heated up, and the first and second skimmings are taken off, and it goes into the kettle the next day; that is, 24 hr. elapse from the time the bullion is charged to the time it is in the kettle. L. S. AUSTIN.-It seems to be a long time to hold such a pure bullion. I suppose, though, it comes around conveniently so that you have a time for all the other operations of refining. I. THE GENESIS OF THE DEPOSITS THE ore deposits at Firmeza have been worked continuously since 1884; those at Daiquiri since 1895. It is surprising, therefore, that they have not been the object of careful geologic study until quite recently. It is true that considerable attention was paid to these deposits by A. C. Spencer, in 1901, in the report on the geology of Cuba, by Hayes, Vaughan, and Spencer,1 but this was only incidental to a hasty general reconnaissance of the Island. As far as the Daiquiri deposits are concerned, this gap has been filled by the appearance of the two papers by Prof. James F. Kemp2 and by Prof. Waldemar Lindgren and Clyde P. Ross respectively.3 Max Roesler, first holder of the Emmons fellowship, made a detailed study of the Firmeza deposits during the past summer, so that soon we can expect a full description of them. Consequently, there is no. demand at the present time for a description of the deposits from other sources, rind that is not the purpose of this paper. The papers on Daiquiri, however, leave unsolved problems in regard to the age of the rocks of the district and certain phases of the genesis of the deposits, and it is with the. hope of aiding in the solution of some of these problems that this contribution is offered. Kemp, and Lindgren and Ross agree in assigning these deposits to the type of contact metamorphic deposits. They disagree in part on the question of their localization. In the Picher field, structure made openings for the circulation of the mineralizing solutions by flexing, shearing, and fracturing the sedimentary beds. This structure is used with the spatial and genetic relationship of the ore minerals, sphalerite and galena, and the gangue minerals, dolomite and jasperoid, in prospecting for ore bodies. THE Picher Mining Field, fig. 1, which lies between Baxter Springs, Kansas, and Commerce, Okla., is the most intensely mineralized and the largest zinc-lead ore producing area in the Tri-State District of Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma. The parts of this paper concerning mineralization maps and pipe slump-structures are not covered in the above publications. Geology The geology of the Picher mining field is similar to that of the entire Tri-State district because the sedimentary horizons that are found here are found throughout the district, and the ore bodies in the respective horizons have similar characteristics. The beds that contain the ore bodies in the Picher field are illustrated and described in fig. 2. The five unconformities found in the mines of the Picher field are indicated on the geologic section, fig. 2. The unconformity shown at the base of Meramec (B bed) is relatively unimportant since B bed was mostly eroded from the area of the Picher field before the Chester beds were deposited. B bed has been observed in the cuttings from only a few churn drill holes. The Pennsylvanian (Cherokee shale) formation is the top horizon found in the Picher mining field. It has been eroded from the southeastern part of the field, but because of the regional dip of the sedimentary beds to the west, it attains thicknesses of 100 ft to 200 ft along the west edge of the field. It is 200 ft to 300 ft thick in the Miami trough. It was deposited on the Boone limestone surface, which contained relatively few shallow erosion channels and very few depressions. Subsequent to the deposition of the shale, solution of limestone from underlying limestone horizons by circulating solutions caused the overlying beds, including the Cherokee shale, to slump into the larger openings formed by the solution and removal of the limestone. Chert The origin of the chert in the Tri-State district has been a controversial subject among geologists. Tarr7 advocated a syngenetic origin for the chert, postulating that it formed from colloidal silica deposited in the Mississippian seas. In the Picher field, structure made openings for the circulation of the mineralizing solutions by flexing, shearing, and fracturing the sedimentary beds. This structure is used with the spatial and genetic relationship of the ore minerals, sphalerite and galena, and the gangue minerals, dolomite and jasperoid, in prospecting for ore bodies. To the members of the A. I. M. E., who have given much and risked all to fight "Over There" with pick, or gun, or brain, and to the members who have chosen the sometimes more self-denying duty of remaining at home to help produce metals for fighters: Your experience in foreign lands has bred in you that spirit of internationalism which will soon be infused into every corner of our country by virile lads thrilling from a great experience in an old, yet new, land over the seas. To them the East will not seem as far from the West as it was, nor the North from the South. Sectional jealousies will seen despicable to one who has fought for a great ideal shoulder to shoulder with real men of other nations. And they who have willingly sacrificed much on the altar of service will have little patience with an egotist, be he laborer, tradesman, capitalist or engineer. The problems which peace brings to us are more difficult than those of war and their solution requires not only cool heads, tolerance, and wise judgment, but the "getting together" of sections and classes and individuals. The triumph of justice over individualism, represented by the draft law, must be repeated, for there are "slackers" in peace Is well as in war, and the spirit of self-denial expressed in response to Liberty Loans, Red Cross, and Welfare drives and Food Administration appeals must live. We have only just begun to learn how to serve. It is often claimed by our members that the engineer is not given, in the community at large, the recognition which his training should merit; that his reward is not as great nor his service as welcome as it should be. This paper shows how stability theory can be used to optimize solvent recovery of oil. Application of the theory leads to definition of the limiting conditions required for stable displacement to occur. One of these conditions is that the size of a solvent "slug" must at least equal a prescribed minimum. The criteria to be satisfied are miscibil-ity and stability. Stability implies that no viscous fingering will occur and that mixing will be caused only by a dispersion process. Miscibility implies that complete recovery will be obtained from the swept regions. Thus, for any specified set of reservoir conditions, an optimum use of solvent is defined. INTRODUCTION The early outlook for solvent flooding as a means to increase oil recovery was very favorable. Some laboratory results indicated that a "slug" containing perhaps 2 to 3 per cent of a hydrocarbon pore volume could be successful. However, other data suggested as much as 30 per cent would be required. The difference is of considerable economic importance. A theoretical explanation for these divergent results has been advanced by the author.1,2 Stability theory defines conditions for two distinct flow regimes. In stable displacement, solvent and oil become mixed by a dispersion process, and the solvent requirement is small. On the other hand, unstable displacement can degenerate into viscous fingering. The practical result is a considerable increase in the extent of mixing and, thus, in the solvent required. The present paper shows how to use stability theory to optimize solvent recovery of oil. Oil is usually considered to be displaced by a small amount, or a slug, of solvent. Gas in turn follows solvent. Any fingering will permit contact of nearly solvent-free gas and oil, leading to immiscibility and reduced recovery. Thus, our optimum is defined by two restrictions — stable flow and miscibility. Although an immiscible solvent process could prove more profitable than any miscible process, such processes lie outside the selected definition of an optimum. The usefulness of computations based on the present work will depend on the validity of the general theory. Because the important idealizations required tend to minimize the predicted solvent requirement, the results should state correctly the limiting conditions required. Therefore, theoretical calculations should have practical value. This paper first reviews several principles that result from stability theory. The following section describes use of these ideas in relatively simple systems which symmetry makes appear one-dimensional. Of particular importance is the step-by-step design of 3 stable minimum-solvent slug. The use of stability theory in cases of multi-dimensional displacement is discussed and, finally, suggestions are given for simplified practical application of the theoretical results. PRINCIPLES OF STABILITY THEORY The use of perturbation methods to derive stability conditions has been shown by the author.l The discussion is presented in terms of the fractional concentration of solvent in the single hydrocarbon phase.
