The copper-beariug rock formations of Cananea, Sonora, Mexico, present conclusive evidences of extensive and sharp plication. Some of these evidences are here briefly stated. 1. There is a succession of approximately parallel outcrops of an altered limestone, alternating with dikes and masses of porphyry. The great copper-ore deposits are in close association with these ridges of limestone, which trend northerly and southerly and stand nearly vertical. This parallel succession is so well-defined that the management of the mines has, for convenience, recognized and named five zones, known from the chief mines, in their succession from east to west, as the " Cobre-Grande," " Veta-Grande," " Esperanza," " Capote," and " Puertocitas " belts. The intervening and separating formations are coarsely crystalline feldspar porphyries, highly basic, of light color, which may be regarded as intrusive and, in part at least, as the cause of the metamorphosed condition of the limestone. 2. These cupriferous limestone-zones are similar in constitution, are similarly charged with copper-ore (in association with quartz as a gangue, or veinstone), and are marked by similar croppiugs of gossan. 3. Distinctly folded outcrops of the surrounding strata can be observed, especially on the eastern border of the copper-bearing district north of the Democrita ground, and not far from the Veta-Grande. 4. The limestone ridge adjoining the Veta-Grande ends a short distance north of the mine, and appears to be the extretne end of a synclinal trough. 5. The Capote limestone, the most western of the croppings of the central copper-bearing area, is contiguous to stratified sandstones and quartzites, uplifted at high angles, but showing an easterly dip. Lattice parameters of various hafnium compounds, two borides, a carbide and a nitride were determined. Some physical properties were measured and comparisons with the properties of the corre-sponing zirconium compounds were drawn. A LTHOUGH borides of transition metals have A been extensively investigated in recent years, there are few references in the literature to borides of hafnium. This is not surprising, in view of the extreme scarcity and great cost of the purified metal. Becker' reported the existence of a boride, carbide, and nitride of hafnium; he listed the formulas as HfB, HfC, and HfN. However, in his work no mention was made of chemical analyses of the reaction products. In this paper results of a study of various hafnium compounds, including borides, carbides, and nitrides, are reported. It was expected, of course, that these compounds would closely resemble their zirconium analogues, which have previously been extensively investigated. Three borides of zirconium are known: ZrB,² ZrB,² and ZrB212.4 In addition, one carbide, ZrC,5 and one nitride, ZrN,5 have been reported. It should be noted that ZrB and ZrB12 are stable phases only in relatively high-temperature regions, unlike ZrB2, which is stable from room temperature to its melting point." It was felt that hafnium would yield corresponding borides, carbides, and nitrides with similar stability ranges. Experimental Procedures and Results A quantity of hafnium metal that was better than 97 pct pure, with zirconium as its major impurity, was furnished by the Argonne National Laboratories. The boron powder used was approximately 96.5 pct pure. In general, the procedure involved mixing the metal and boron powders in the desired proportions, and subsequently hot pressing them. The resulting specimens were analyzed chemically and phases present were identified by X-ray diffraction methods. A Philips Norelco Geiger counter spectrometer was used for identification of components and for measurement of lattice constants. Filtered copper radiation was used for all X-ray work. Electrical resistivity and density measurements were carried out at room temperature. The stable diboride, HfB2, will be described first. Stoichiometric quantities of boron and metal were heated to approximately 2000°C during hot pressing. The reaction product was shown by X-ray diffraction methods to be isomorphous with ZrB2 (space group Dlgh; P6/mm). Values of lattice constants of HfB2 compared with those of ZrB2 are shown in Table I. The calculated density of HfB2 is 11.2 g per cc, compared with a measured (pycnometric) value of 10.5 g per cc. HfB2 specimens prepared under a wide variety of conditions (including variations in initial Hf-B ratios) showed only insignificant variations in lattice constants, indicating a very narrow range of homogeneity. Like ZrB2,7 HfB2 is an excellent electrical conductor. The resistivity at room temperature of hot-pressed samples, approximately 85 pct dense, is 12 microhm-cm. SEVERAL systems have been investigated by Bates, Wald, and weinstein&apos; to determine the compatibility of pure PbTe with various metals. This was accomplished by experimentally determining the direction of the reaction given by Eq. [I]: The direction of this reaction is very important if alloys of the PbTe system are to be used in thermoelectric generators because the presence of free lead in the matrix, followed by incipient melting in the vicinity of the hot junction, could cause a bonding failure. According to anssen,&apos; the Au-Te system contains only one stable compound, AuTez. The initial alloy which was reacted was therefore of the composition AuTez + 2Pb. Ten-gram samples of PbTe plus 1, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 70 at. pct Au were encapsulated in carbon-coated quartz capsules in vacuo. All materials were of semiconductor (99.999+ pct) purity. Carbon coating was used to prevent reaction of the quartz with any of the alloying constituents (the solubility of carbon in the constituents of the alloys is negligible). Each capsule was then placed in a thermal analysis furnace, melted, and cooled through the transformation region. Thermal arrests were monitored on a strip chart recorder. Each sample was subsequently examined microscopically after standard grinding and polishing techniques were applied. For better contrast between the phases, the samples were etched in Murakami&apos;s etch; however, both phases could be identified without etching. Several of the samples were ground into powder, stress-relieved, and X-rayed in a Debye-Scherrer camera using nickel-filtered Cu-Ka radiation. The phase diagram shown in Fig. 1 indicates that the pseudobinary system exists as a simple eutectic with no measurable (<I pct) solid solubility at either limit. Figs. 2,3, and 4 are photomicrographs of the structures obtained with 20, 40, and 50 at. pct Au, respectively. At higher concentrations of gold (>40 pct) slight divorcement of the eutectic occurred, apparently due to a) the difference in density between gold and PbTe (19.6 and 8.25 g per cu cm, respectively) or b) the nonideality of the liquid as noted by the curvature of the liquidus lines. Mr. James A. Barr, of the Mining Methods Committee of the Institute, has suggested that many engineers must undertake a drilling program of one kid or another and, in the case of diamond drilling, sometimes even are at a loss as to how to start correspondence. The Bureau of Mines has acquired much experience in managing exploratory diamond-drilling activities. Its activities in diamond drilling included exploring for potash in Texas, Utah and New Mexico1-&apos; during the 1920&apos;s. The Strategic Minerals Exploration program was started in 1939 and was materially expanded during the war to include critical and essential minerals. At the peak of its war-time activity more than 200 engineers were employed, a majority of whom supervised diamond drilling. Many of them had little experience with such work prior to their employment with the Bureau, and it was necessary to instruct them in their duties. The purpose of this paper, therefore, is to present the fundamentals of exploratory diamond drilling from the viewpoint of management in such a way that they will Serve as a basis on which those beginning exploratory diamond drilling may build an experience and acquire ability to direct exploration as they gain that experience. Selection of Method of Drilling Selection of the method of drilling is governed by the type of material to be penetrated and by the type of sample needed to determine the quality and importance of a deposit. Types of drills that might be used for a given job include diamond drills, churn drills, hand auger drills, power auger drills, bucket drills, and rotary drills (sometimes called "seismograph rigs"). Each type has a specific field in which it is most useful. While the Bureau of Mines utilized all the types of drilling mentioned, diamond drilling was used on a majority of its exploratory projects. Factors Governing Selection of Diamond Drilling The prime consideration in selecting a method of drilling is first to determine what results are desired and then to choose a method that will furnish reliable data in the ground to be penetrated. Use of diamond drills permits recovery of a core as well as sludge at a comparatively low cost. The American literature in the field of dust sampling and analysis has been growing rapidly since 1915. Studies made since that time clearly indicate that there are three fundamental factors that determine the production of lung pathology due to dust inhalation. These are the duration of exposure, the chemical and mineralogic nature of the dust and the concentration of the potentially harmful dust. In the estimation of the amount of the potentially hazardous dust there are essentially three problems involved: (I) a determination of the size of the hazardous dust; (2) determination of the most satisfactory apparatus and technique of sampling, and (3) the most satisfactory method of analysis. A complete study of the literature shows that industrial dust varies ill size from ultramicroscopic particles to those larger than lop in diameter and that relatively few particles are found over 5u in diameter. Approximately 10 to 25 per cent are less than 0.811 in diameter and the median size as a rule is found to lie between 1.25 and 1.75 microns. From the point of view of lung pathology the particle sizes of most importance lie between 0.5 and 5u. Of all the instruments for sampling dust the Impinger apparatus is the only one that will sample a larger body of air satisfactorily with small control errors and high efficiency in both low and high concentrations of dust. The Owens apparatus has the advantage of being more portable and somewhat easier to use but it does riot permit of the sampling of large volumes of air. It has a low efficiency in high concentrations of dust and does not permit dust weights to be obtained. From the point of dust-counting technique the author points out that in 1922 considerable experimentation with dark field and oblique illumination resulted in the conclusion that such methods were not readily duplicated from day to day and therefore yielded somewhat erratic results. Production of crude petroleum in Mexico during 1935 totaled approximately 40,082,000 bbl., an increase of 1,925,000 bbl. over the previous year. Successful development continued in the Poza Rica field during the year, increasing production in that area from 3,708,000 bbl. in 1934 to 9,542,000 in 1935. The output of the South fields (Golden Lane) area decreased by 3,000,000 bbl. during the year, and the heavy-oil district of the Northern fields by 1,500,000 bbl. Production in the Tehuantepec fields showed a slight gain. Production of natural gasoline increased from 430,000 to 600,000 bbl. in 1935. Crude run to stills in local refineries is estimated at 30,000,000 bbl., some 4,000,000 bbl. more than in the previous year. Exports of crude and refined products were approximately 22,000,000 bbl., or 2,000,000 bbl. less than in 1934. Exclusive of ships bunkers, domestic consumption increased about 900,000 bbl. during the year, reaching an estimated total of 14,500,000 barrels. Only 74 wells were completed, as compared to 148 in 1934 and 91 in 1933. In proven areas 58 completions resulted in 33 producers and 25 failures. In northeastern Mexico, near the United States border, six wildcat wells were completed, all of which gave little or no encouraging results, except Rancheria No. 3, near Camargo, which is a fair-sized gas well. Four wildcats were drilled just northeast of the Northern fields (heavy-oil district), all of which were failures. A deep test was completed a short distance southeast of the Golden Lane (South fields) in Palo Blanco, which encountered small production not sufficient to exploit. On the Isthmus of Tehuantepec a wildcat well was completed for an estimated initial production of 2000 bbl. daily, a short distance south of the old Jalapa field, which was perhaps the most important new development of the year. Four other wildcats drilled in the Isthmus district resulted in failures. Fields Northern Fields (Heavy-oil District).—In the Northern fields, 18 producing wells and 20 failures were completed, as compared to 34 producers and 71 failures in 1934. Pure copper that has been allowed to oxidize at an elevated temperature in the air is found to be covered with two distinguishable layers of oxide scale. The outer of these, which is very thin, is composed of cuprie oxide, while the inner layer, comprising the bulk of the scale, is made up chiefly of cuprous oxide (Fig, la). If a small quantity of an alloying element, such as silicon, is present in the copper, silica particles are found disseminated through the cuprous oxide, deposited most abundantly near the metal surface, and, in addition, silica particles occur to a limited depth within the copper itself (Fig. 1b). It is this inner layer, composetl of oxide particles precipitated in a matrix of metallic copper, that is known as the "subscale" or the zone of internal oxidation. Under a low oxygen pressure it is possible to produce the subscale without the formation of external layers of copper oxides, thus leaving the metal surface bright and apparently clean while oxidation has occurred, in fact, to a considerable depth within the metal (Fig. 2). Although little is yet known in a detailed way of the mechanism of internal oxidation, the general nature of the process is evident. By virtue of the considerable solubility of oxygen in copper,&apos; it is possible to bring the alloying element in contact with oxygen within the metallic solid solution. If the oxide of the alloying element is more stable than cuprous oxide, the foreign oxide may form and, since most oxides are relatively insoluble in copper, it will not long remain in solution, but mill separate as a precipitate. As the metallic solute is exhausted in the zone of precipitation, oxygen that is constantly being supplied at the surface diffuses farther into the alloy and thus produces an ever-thickening shell of subscale. The distribution of the reacting elements in the subscale and adjoining zones must be somewhat as indicated in Fig. 3. The conditions requisite to internal oxidation to be anticipated are thus: (I) a solubility of oxygen in the alloy, (2) the ability of oxygen to diffuse at an appreciable rate into the alloy, (3) the possibility of the

Application of electric logs has been used in correlation of subsurface structure to determine the size and shape of the oil reservoir. Such a knowledge is hardly complete until saturation and productivity are determined for the various horizons. It is difficult to use electric logs successfully for this purpose because of the many factors that influence the curves. In this work an effort was made to establish an empirical correlation between formation resistivity for a series of electric-log curves and water saturation and oil productivity of sand. Electric logs were obtained by recording with 10 different electrode spacings through the same interval of a well. In the analysis of these curves all factors except two, a dependent and independent variable, were held constant. The proceduer in the last method depends on a correction for thickness factor and a theoretical curve. The accuracy of the theoretical curve is now being tested in the laboratory. In an effort to place the analysis of electric logs on a quantitative basis, there is need for a better understanding of the many factors that influence an electric-log curve. These factors may be large differences in sand thickness, permeability of the sand, salinity of the interstitial water, mud resistivity, formation temperature, and other sources. Application of electric logs has been used in correlation of subsurface structure to determine the size and shape of the oil reservoir. Such a knowledge is hardly complete until saturation and productivity are determined for the various horizons. It is difficult to use electric logs successfully for this purpose because of the many factors that influence the curves. In this work an effort was made to establish an empirical correlation between formation resistivity for a series of electric-log curves and water saturation and oil productivity of sand. Electric logs were obtained by recording with 10 different electrode spacings through the same interval of a well. In the analysis of these curves all factors except two, a dependent and independent variable, were held constant. ENGINEERING COUNCIL has passed, not out, but upward! Therefore, its recent wake was conducted by itself as a joyful occasion somewhat in advance of its official demise. Council held its last meeting in Washington, Dec. 16, 1920. Business was transacted with dignified gravity in the forenoon. During the afternoon calls were made upon the chiefs of technical bureaus of the Government: the Chief of Engineers, U. S. Army; Chief of Yards and Docks of the Navy Department; Director of U. S. Reclamation Service; Director of U. S. Geological Survey; Director of Bureau of Mines. The Council pronounced them, each and all, able men and true. But what of the evening? Well, there was a dinner at the Washington Hotel. Twenty-six men gathered around a flower-strewn table-not a casket. As guests, there graced the festive board the hosts of the afternoon calls, and a number of members of the new American Engineering Council. The body about to be apotheosized-otherwise known as Engineering Council-was both jocular and reminiscent. Rewards were bestowed and appreciations expressed. To the man who had for three long years borne the burden of chairmanship and whose financial recklessness made possible the Washington office and the movement for a National Public Works Department, the following "note," duly engrossed and signed, was given, accompanied by "The Song of the Council Crew."
