A summary of oil and gas development in Ohio for 1935 must necessarily be brief. As attention of the state government to the oil and gas industry has never included the collection and compilation of statistics on production, either by producing sands, by counties, by fields, or for the state as a whole, such information as requested in Table 1 of this symposium is impossible to secure for this state. In the absence of production data chief attention must be directed to drilling activity for the year. Information such as can be compiled from various sources, including weekly drilling reports to operating companies and trade journals, is given in the following paragraphs with the realization that the data may not be complete in all its details. Drilling Activity by Fields Drilling activity during 1935 was similar to the preceding year in , that the major operating companies were generally content to drill lease-requirement and offset wells and in that comparatively little effort was made to discover new pools. A compilation of completions recorded in weekly reports to drilling companies and in trade journals show 1022 tests completed for the year in 53 counties of the state. Of this total number, 653 wells were commercial producers and 369 were classed as dry holes. Production was secured in 40 counties from formations ranging in depth to 5700 ft. and ranging in age from Middle Ordovician to upper Pennsyl-vanian. From the standpoint of new production for the year, the most important sands are the Clinton of Silurian age, the Berea of Mississippian age and the Shallow sands of Mississippian above the Berea and of Pennsylvanian age. Trenton Sand Field Production in the field of Trenton sand, which originally included parts of 15 counties in northwestern Ohio, is now on the decline. Seventy-three completions were reported in this field during 1935, of which 33.8 per cent were dry holes. Activity centered in Allen County with 12 completions, two of which were dry holes; in Hardin County with 11 producers; and in Wyandot County with 12 producers and 2 dry holes.

Grain-growth and recrystallization characteristics of a commercially pure zirconium prepared by the iodide process are reported. Grain growth from 640° to 800°C was continuous once initiated and obeyed D = kt". Recrystallization of zirconium occurred at temperatures of 450° to 550°C after deformations of 20 and 50 pct. Hardening from partially soluble inclusions prevented determination of the absolute rates of recrystallization, but the relative rates of recrystallization obtained are useful as a guide in fabrication practice. BASIC information needed as a guide in the hot and cold working and annealing of metals includes recrystallization and grain-growth data. A search of the literature revealed no such information for pure zirconium. This is a report of practical grain-growth and recrystallization results obtained for a commercial grade of pure zirconium on a project sponsored by the Office of Naval Research. In this work, isothermal grain-growth curves were obtained at five temperatures from 640" to 800°C inclusively; while recrystallization curves have been determined at 450°, 500°, and 550°C for the metal at the deformation levels of 20 and 50 pct. In addition to the usual variables of temperature, time, and deformation, distribution of the second phase found in all commercial grades of iodide zirconium is also treated as an important factor in these grain-growth and recrystallization studies. In conducting this work, two properties of zirconium were particularly pertinent in dictating experimental conditions. First, since zirconium undergoes a transformation from the a close-packed hexagonal form to the ß body-centered cubic form at 862°C, no recrystallization or grain-growth studies were made above 800°C. Second, because dissolved gases (oxygen, nitrogen and/or hydrogen) increase the hardness and lower the ductility of the solid metal, all annealing treatments in this investigation were carried out in vacuum or in a helium atmosphere. Materials and Methods The zirconium used in this investigation was prepared by the Foote Mineral Co. by deposition from its iodide. A spectrochemical analysis of the metal showed the following composition in weight pct: Hf, 2.1; Mg, 0.012; Fe, 0.035; Si, 0.095; Ti, 0.023; Al, 0.037; Mo, trace; Ni, trace; Cr, trace; Ca, 0.006. Conventional metallographic procedures involving hand polishing on wet metallographic papers, followed by final polishing on fine, levigated alumina on gamal cloth and a medium speed wheel were used throughout this investigation. Grain boundaries were revealed with modified Tucker's etch containing 20 parts glycerine, 2 parts hydrofluoric acid, and one part nitric acid. One phase has been completed of a laboratory invesrigation of formations with relatively high permeability under conditions of overburden, formation and mud coltrmn pressures. The following statements are based on these tests within the limitations described. Drilling rate decreased when mud column pressure was greater than formation pressure. The decrease was primarily due to a layer of cuttings and mud particles held to the hole bottom by the difference in pressure. Much of the force of the bit was wasted in this layer and was unavailable for penetrating virgin formation. Adequate jet velocities helped clean the filter cake and chips away and resulted in increased drilling rate — the higher the jet velocity the faster the drilling rate. Drilling rate increased slightly when formation pres sure was greater than mud column pressure. The i11(reuse resulted from cleaning the hole bottom as formarion fluid flowed into the borehole. Overburden pressure had practically no effect on drilling rate. INTRODUCTION Some formations are difficult to drill in a wellbore hole but are easily drilled under atmospheric conditions in the laboratory. The reasons for this apparent difference in drillability are not fully understood. An increase in formation compressive strength causes a reduction in drilling rate. It has been shown by Griggs1, Handin2 and others3-1 that formation strength increases under conditions of high hydrostatic stress. Based on these results, a decrease in drilling rate would be expected with increased drilling fluid pressure in formations of low permeability having low formation fluid pressure. Such a decrease has been shown by Murray. et a1 and Eckel" This effect holds even when using nitrogcn under high pressure as the drilling fluid (unrc-ported tests from the Hughes laboratory). Poor bottom-hole cleaning may account for decreased drilling rates. Even though it may not be easily explained, evidence of poor cleaning can easily bc seen. One evidence is the increased drilling rate that accompanies decreased balling obtained with addition of oil in some muds used to drill shales.4,7,3 Many variables can affect drilling rates. These may include mud composition and properties, formation properties, bit types and operating conditions, formation fluid, mud column and overburden pressures. These must be studied a few at a time under carefully controlled conditions which simulate actual conditions as closely as possible. The purpose of this work was to investigate effect of overburden, formation and mud column pressures on drilling rates in permeable formations. These tests were suggested by conditions shown in Fig. I. Represented is a borehole drilled into a formation with relatively high permeability. In the vicinity of the hole bottom there exists a mud column pressure, P a formation fluid pressure, P and an overburden pressure, The mud has low water-loss properties and sufficient weight to more than overbalance the formation pressure. Laboratory investigation included a range with formation pressure greater than mud column pressure. The amount of oxygen present in refined copper bears an important relation to the effects of various impurities on physical properties of copper, as well as the effects of reducing gases at higher temperatures. It seems fitting at this time, when the effects of reducing gases on copper are being discussed, to describe methods that have proved satisfactory for the determination of oxygen and sulfur, and to present some results obtained by investigation of these methods in the authors' laboratory. The procedure for the determination of sulfur is closely interrelated with that for oxygen and has, therefore, been included. It was first proposed by Hampe1 that oxides in copper could be accurately determined by the loss in weight sustained by finely divided copper when reduced at red heat in pure hydrogen, or by the weight of water produced. Hampe's method was later modified by Archbutt,2 who established the accuracy of the method and demonstrated that equally accurate results were obtained by noting the loss in weight or by weighing the water formed. The determination of oxygen by heating in carbon monoxide has been proposed by West.3 In our hands this method has given slightly lower results than obtained by heating in hydrogen. Heath4 found that the loss in weight after heating in hydrogen did not represent the true oxygen as cuprous oxide but included also gases derived by the metal from the fuel and refining in the furnace, and any trace of mechanically held moisture. He found, further, that the copper after ignition retained hydrogen equivalent to about 0.01 per cent. Heath proposed to determine the amount of occluded gases by preliminary ignition for 20 min. in pure carbon dioxide—and to correct the error caused by absorbed hydrogen by subsequent ignition and cooling in carbon dioxide, finally replacing this gas with air.

ORE control is a matter of planning and supervision based on a foreknowledge of the content and distribution of ore. The Inspiration orebody is predominately a copper-sulphide blanket, overlain by an oxidized zone of copper silicates, copper carbonates, and barren capping. Most of the ore is treated by leaching, and the optimum requirement of this method is the goal toward which the mining schedule is aimed. Both open-pit operations and underground mining are used. The problems of ore control at Inspiration are: 1-maintenance of metallurgical balance, 2-conservation of oxide ore, and 3-mining out of the orebody at an average grade which parallels that of the reserve figure. Prior to the fall of 1926 all of the Inspiration division ores were treated by flotation, but the mixed ores of the Live Oak-Keystone section carried too large a proportion of copper in the form of chrysocolla for satisfactory flotation. For this type of mixed ore the leaching process now in use had been worked out, and the plant was put into operation in the fall of 1926. The process is known as the ferric sulphate leach, and the leaching solvents contain both ferric sulphate and free sulphuric acid. Sulphide copper in the form of chalcocite is leached by the ferric sulphate, and the oxidized copper minerals are dissolved by the sulphuric acid. From the beginning of operations to the present time the plant has treated some 67 thousand tons of ore having an average copper content of 1.142 pet, of which 0.605 pct has been in the form of oxidized copper minerals. The plant is currently being operated at the rate of 11,500 tons per day, 7 days per week. However, this tonnage is produced in 6 days of mine operation. The average current grade is approximately 1 pct copper, of which about 50 pct is present as oxidized or acid-soluble copper. Close control of metallurgical procedures is a vital factor in operation of the plant and is in turn dependent upon careful regulation of feed. An excess of sulphide copper requires the presence of more ferric sulphate in the leaching solvents. On the other hand, an excess of ferric sulphate in the presence of a low sulphide feed seriously reduces the efficiency of electrolytic precipitation in tank house operations. This condition must be avoided at all costs. An additional factor must be considered. It is known that the sulphide content is predominant in the ore which remains in the reserve. To maintain the necessary sulphide-oxide proportion, so that the entire reserve will mine out at both a grade and a sulphide-oxide ratio that will be permissible throughout the remaining life of the property, it is obvious that the oxide reserve must be currently preserved to as great an extent as possible. Fortunately much of the oxide reserve is found in the open-pit operation. This happy circumstance adds flexibility to the procedure and makes it possible to maintain the close regulation necessary to insure best overall results, both mining and metallurgical. The two ore streams from the pit and underground operations join at the coarse-crushing plant, and proper control must be exercised before the ore reaches this point. The open pit is currently providing about 55 pet of the ore and underground operations the balance of production. Both operations are under a single superintendent so that the closely interrelated problems may be more readily controlled. The least flexible of the two producing units is the underground mine, where the mining method is block caving. Although a block of ground may be undercut and developed, characteristics of the material determine its caving action. The ore in the chutes must be drawn. THAT oxygen in copper has been a source of trouble is well known and that that trouble has been real in the commercial world has been shown by Fuller.1 Moore and Beckinsale's paper2 at the annual meeting of the Institute of Metals in London, 1921, called forth considerable discussion. Prof. T. Turner expressed the opinion that it was not necessary to have cuprous oxide present in sufficiently large quantities to form either globules or seams in order to produce a bad effect if the copper were gassed. This brought up the question of the solubility of oxygen in copper and the authors desired to know whether there were any evidence of such solubility, because their experience was that whenever there was any oxygen in copper it was present in the form of free cuprous oxide, .which was practically always in the form of globules. Later Hanson, Marryat, and Ford3 stated that for all practical purposes cuprous oxide may be regarded as insoluble in copper. However, they found particles of the eutectic to coalesce to form much larger particles. They suggested that cuprous oxide was actually slightly soluble in copper, for it was diffi-cult otherwise to understand the mechanism by which such coalescence could take place. W. E. Ruder, in discussing that paper, said that his experiments had led him to conclude that a slight solubility must exist to allow for the ready coalescence of oxide particles, but conductivity tests convinced him that that solubility was very small. Nevertheless, there appeared to be a state of admixture of oxide with copper that closely resembled a colloidal mixture which at first was mistaken for a true solution and which usually existed at the grain boundaries.

THE metals of the platinum group, ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, iridium and platinum, have certain characteristic effects on the structure and appearance of the cupellation bead. These effects are dependent not only on the particular member of the group present, but also on its concentration. The extent and quality of these effects, however, have not received investigation worthy of their importance. Bannister and Patching investigated the qualitative effects of some of these metals in 1913. This paper deals with a possible rapid qualitative and quantitative delineation of the effects exerted on the cupellation bead by the various metals in the platinum group. More particularly, the paper correlates quantitatively the presence of such metals with their characteristic structural and surface effects. Inasmuch as the various members of the group are more frequently associated with gold than with silver, the gold button will receive the greater consideration. The past two decades have seen a much greater interest manifested in this particular group of metals, because of the increased industrial demand for them. There has been a constantly growing need for assays that will not only express the silver and gold values but also indicate the presence of the other metals. If these indications could be used as quantitative criteria, their value would be greatly increased, because the methods of chemical analysis for the elements of the platinum group are lengthy, involved and unreliable except when the analysis is made by an expert and experienced rare-metal analyst. The materials for the X-ray diffraction examination of the different beads were prepared by filing and screening to -200 mesh, and were then rayed in a General Electric X-ray diffraction unit. The filed samples were treated magnetically in order to eliminate any possible steel particles. Sodium chloride and C.P. gold and silver were used as standard comparators.2 (See Table 1.)

THE degree to which our mineral requirements are being met by mining leaner, more complex or more remote deposits is indicated by developments during 1953. Heavy capital investment, skilled technical advice, planning, and able execution are requirements for the typical venture. Producers, faced with rising costs and with softer prices, are seeking improved mining and recovery. Developments in production of iron ore are typical of the course being followed in metal and nonmetal mining. Iron ore development in the U. S. is concentrated on the spectacular work with Lake Superior taconite, while in Canada new production is expected from Labrador and output from Steep Rock, Algoma, and Newfoundland is being increased. Shipment of iron will soon be made from Venezuela.

AS a part of the general program on alloys of uranium carried out at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology under contract W-7405-eng-175 for the Manhattan Project during the recent war, it was considered desirable to investigate the boundary binary phase diagrams of the ternary alloy system uranium-tungsten-tantalum. Previous work on these alloys was practically nonexistent. A brief statement to the effect that tantalum and tungsten form a continuous series of solid solutions was found in a general paper on tantalum by W. V. Bolton1 but no information was available on the uranium-tungsten and uranium-tantalum systems. The research to be described in this paper has served to delineate the main features of the uranium-tungsten, uranium-tantalum phase diagrams and to check Bolton's work on the tungsten-tantalum diagram. Experimental Details Metals: The tungsten and tantalum used for preparing the alloys were 99.96 and 99.65 pct pure, respectively. The chief impurities in the metals were about 0.02 pct molybdenum in the tungsten, and 0.2 pct columbium, 0.05 pct tungsten, 0.02 pct barium and 0.01 pct silicon in the tantalum. The uranium used was 99.9 pct pure, with the main contaminants being iron and carbon. (An appreciable amount of magnesium was present in the uranium as received, but this distilled off during melting and so is not reported as an impurity.) The composition of specimens indicated in the subsequent figures and tables of this paper are the results of chemical analyses on the cast alloys except for the tantalum-tungsten alloys. ALTHOUGH nickel was discovered and isolated as early as 1750 and its valuable properties recognized, many years passed before it was used commercially for wire, sheet, rods, etc., in the pure form. This was due partly to its high cost at that time and partly to the fact that it was not possible to refine and cast nickel into ingots sufficiently malleable to be amenable to the usual forging, rolling, or drawing processes. So remarkable was this fact, and so different from the experience at that time with metals such as copper and iron, that it has left its impress on the no-menclature within the nickel industry. To this day, furnace-cast nickel produced in such a manner as to be suitable for rolling and forging is called malleable nickel to distinguish it from the ordinary pig and shot nickel of commerce. In 1878, the firm of Jos. Wharton, of Philadelphia (which later became The American Nickel Works, a constituent of The International Nickel Co.) exhibited at the Paris Exhibition specimens of rolled pure nickel strip and of drawn nickel wire. About this time, there was considerable activity in the study of the refining of nickel and several methods were described, some of which were patented, for the production of furnace-cast malleable nickel including the use of manganese (Boed-dicker,1 Selve and Lotter2), the use of potassium permanganate (Bernsdorfer Metallwarenfabrik3) and the use of phosphorus (Garnier4). By far the most efficient method was discovered by Th. Fleitmann in 1879;5 it consisted in adding to the molten nickel, just before pouring the castings, from 0.05 to 0.125 per cent. of metallic magnesium. This soon became the recognized final malleableizing treatment for furnace-cast nickel.

Corrosion studies in laboratory ball mills and grinding environment simulations produce corrision rates and total metal removal rates much lower than those recorded in operating production ball mills. The corrosion component of ball metal loss in many mills probably represents less than 10% of the total loss, judging from AMAX experience and recent US Bureau of Mines (USBM) tests. Such small absolute losses are consistent with ball metal loss measured in production ball mill marked ball wear tests to determine effects of corrosion and abrasion resisting properties of alloys in operating mills. These indicate that metal hardness and microstructure determine relative metal loss rates of a given situation. The combination of ore characteristics and grinding process dynamics determine metal loss severity. Alloying for corrosion resistance and modification of the milling corrosion environment yield relatively small metal loss reductions. Alloying and heat treatment to produce high hardness and microstructures of high carbon martensite and, for cast irons M7C3 carbides, produces the lowest metal losses in typical wet grinding applications.

Continuous mining has revolutionized the coal industry but intensified the problems of earlier mechanization. From the installation of the first miner, it was recognized that face ventilation would be one of these problems. To establish an efficient work cycle for the equipment being used, conventional mechanized mining provides four or more development faces. Continuous mining, relying on a single machine, requires only one face, although more than one can be driven alternately by the same machine. In gaseous areas mined by the older methods, the intermittent rate of exposure allows time for the face to bleed off or be cleared, and the width obtained with conventional units makes it possible to hang a brattice line almost to the face. Continuous mining increases the ventilation hazards; there is no margin of time, and very limited space. For all practical purposes, continuous miners available today can be grouped into two major types, rippers and borers. The two can be further classified, respectively, as flexible and rigid. Both types have been in operation in U. S. coal mines for the past five to ten years in a number of seams, under various conditions ranging from slightly gaseous to very gaseous. Common methods of face ventilation utilizing jute or plastic brattice material for line curtains, stoppings, and checks have so far met with success. Air volumes to operating sections are greater than for conventional mining, and specific instructions have been given to section crews stressing the precautions needed in dealing with a steady rate of gas emission and the importance of maintaining reasonably air-tight brattice to direct a good steady flow toward the face at all times. Operators of continuous miners, as well as the foreman on each section, are equipped with an approved safety lamp for gas testing. Mine fires are always dangerous and are frequently accompanied by loss of life during the period of confusion which is apt to follow their discovery. In metal mines, fires may result from the accidental ignition of combustible material, or they may be of spontaneous origin resulting from the rapid decomposition of sulphide. They occur frequently enough to demonstrate the need of some special equipment and a general plan for controlling them, in addition to measures for their prevention. Nearly all the large copper mines have had fires, and the methods of fighting them have been well described in recent papers, notably by C. L. Berrien,1 R. E. Tally,2 and others in discussion. The Copper Queen mine has many shafts, which are connected by underground workings. The deeper parts are ventilated by fans, but in the shallower portions natural ventilation through numerous connecting raises or shafts is sufficient. There have been several fires in the past few years, of which all are extinguished but one, which is under control. These notes cover particularly the preparations that are being made to check a new fire, partially or temporarily, and to facilitate the escape of workmen in the interval before a definite plan of fighting it can be established. A fire may occur in a shaft or station, or in some working farther away. In case of fire in an upcast shaft, the gas would escape to the surface and the immediate result would probably not be dangerous to workmen, as they could escape by other shafts. In a downcast shaft, however, the gas would be distributed very rapidly throughout a large portion of the mine, and men might easily be trapped and asphyxiated. A fire in mine workings, drift, raise, or stope, would be dangerous in a degree, but the draft there is likely to be less strong than in a shaft and probably a smaller area would be invaded by the fire gases. Most of the roofing granules produced in Pennsylvania are made by two companies at three plants. The Advance Industrial Supply Co. has three quarries and a mill at Gladhill Station, in southern Adams County. The Funkhouser Company is actively engaged in mining, quarrying and milling at Charmian, about one mile west of Gladhill Station, and at Delta, in southern York County. These three plants produced approximately 100,000 short tons of granules in 1943. The production of rooling granules in 1937 for the whole country was only about 500,000 tons, generally indicating the large growth of the industry since that time. The fundamentals of producing roofing granules were discussed comprehensively by G. W. Josephson in a paper before the Industrial Minerals Division in October 1943 (TP 1725, this volume page 460). The purpose of this paper is to describe the actual methods of mining the rock and milling it to make roofing granules, as practiced by the three Pennsylvania plants. Mining and Milling Funkhouser Company (Delta) The Funkhouser Company, near Delta, in southern York County, Pennsylvania, operates three joined quarries and a mine in the Peach Bottom slate. The joined quarries extend 1200 ft. in a northeast-southwest direction along the strike of the slate cleavage and are about 200 ft. .wide. The working face is about 45 ft. high. In addition to the normal quarrying operations, a drift into the northeast wall of the middle quarry was begun about 1935, and has advanced about 2000 ft. since then. Rooms have been driven at angles to the drift along choice beds of slate. The drifts and rooms have a roof more than 35 ft. high and the main drift and rooms are all more than 40 ft. wide. There is no cribbing at any place in the mine. Several of the rooms were driven upward on a 5' slope and in some of them there was stop-ing. Ingersoll-Rand Jackhamers are used, and only wet drilling is practiced. When visited in January 1940, an electric shovel was operating at the head of the drift, scooping up the slate blasted out of the working face. This, too, is trucked to the primary crusher. Most of the roofing granules produced in Pennsylvania are made by two companies at three plants. The Advance Industrial Supply Co. has three quarries and a mill at Gladhill Station, in southern Adams County. The Funkhouser Company is actively engaged in mining, quarrying and milling at Charmian, about one mile west of Gladhill Station, and at Delta, in southern York County. These three plants produced approximately 100,000 short tons of granules in 1943. The production of rooling granules in 1937 for the whole country was only about 500,000 tons, generally indicating the large growth of the industry since that time. The fundamentals of producing roofing granules were discussed comprehensively by G. W. Josephson in a paper before the Industrial Minerals Division in October 1943 (TP 1725, this volume page 460). The purpose of this paper is to describe the actual methods of mining the rock and milling it to make roofing granules, as practiced by the three Pennsylvania plants. Mining and Milling Funkhouser Company (Delta) The Funkhouser Company, near Delta, in southern York County, Pennsylvania, operates three joined quarries and a mine in the Peach Bottom slate. Nickel and carbon form a metastable nickel-nickel carbide eutectic system which was ohsen)able by freezing latent-heat arvests at pressures 210 khars. The eutectic freezing temperature Is pressure had a slope of -0.9°Cper kbar. At 50 khars, the nickel-nickel carbide eutectic was at 1297° * 5°C and 0.34 mole fraction Ni3C. The composition of the eutectic increased at an initial rate of 0.004 mol fraction per kbar. The carbon content of the a phase also increased with pressure. Seveval illustrations of nickel carbide microstruc-tures are given and data on the lattice expansion of nickel in terms of carbon content are included. IRON, cobalt, and nickel form a variety of carbides with compositions varying between MeC and MC. Of the three, the carbides of iron are most easily recovered. The nickel carbides are so unstable at temperatures above 900°C that their occurrence in Ni-C alloys is unusual. Under sufficient pressure, however, the temperature range for the stability of the ferrous metal carbides is likely to be increased, or their decomposition suppressed (e.g., see Hilliard' on FesC), providing an opportunity to study the unstable carbides more closely. This was found to be true for nickel carbide which, under pressure, formed a eutectic with nickel. This paper describes the conditions of formation of nickel-nickel carbide eutectic compositions and their subsequent recovery. Despite the comparative instability of the nickel carbides, something is already known about them through various chemical reactions at temperatures not exceeding a few hundred degrees, and from their recovery by the very rapid quenching of molten Ni-C alloys from temperatures of about 1450°C or above. At least four carbides of nickel have been reported: A discussion of the state of knowledge about Ni3C is given by ansen.' The studies of Morrogh and williams7 who obtained Widmanstatten nickel carbide structures and of sidorenko8 who first obtained nickel carbide eutectic structures are also of interest. Sidorenko used short heating times for molten nickel in a graphite crucible followed by very rapid quenching to obtain the eutectic structures. Long heating times produced only the nickel-graphite eutectic probably due to the presence of graphite crystals in the melt which nucleated graphite crystallization. According to the early work summarized by anssen,' nickel carbide may form at temperatures far above the melting point and may be recovered by very rapid quenching. More recently, Giardini and Tydings, working on diamond synthesis, found evidence for "free nickel carbide'' in high-pressure reactions carried to temperatures far in excess of the limit for diamond growth, followed by rapid thermal quench. They stated that nickel carbide was not found in association with diamond growth. In the present work, observations were made on the melting and solidification temperatures of Ni-C alloys as a function of composition, temperature, and pressure. The nickel-nickel carbide eutectic was found at pressures above 10 kbar and its variation with pressure followed up to 60 kbar. Nickel-nickel carbide microstructures were recovered by quenching under pressure from temperatures of about 1400°C and higher. The formation of nickel carbide structures under ordinary diamond-growing conditions was usually observed but the role of carbide formation as an intermediate step in diamond growth needs more study. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS The melting and solidification temperatures of various nickel-graphite compositions were observed by latent-heat arrests in the sample holder illustrated in Fig. 1. The samples were composed of mixtures of carbonyl nickel powder and National Carbon Co.'s SP-1 graphite packed to densities of about 6.4 g per cu cm. They were contained within

A need for new supplies of fresh water exists today and in many specific areas that need is urgent. One solution lies in saline water conversion, a problem complicated by cost factors. The principles involved in saline water conversion, the status of development, and the estimated costs (present and future) of several processes are presented. Among the methods discussed are distillation, electrodialysis, and freezing. In general, the costs presented are based on a standardized procedure for estimating conversion costs, permitting a valid comparison among the various processes. The need for new supplies of fresh water and the potential benefits to be derived from an abundant supply of converted water are recognized by practically everyone concerned with water problems. The water supply problem exists today; it is urgent in many specific areas in this country and also in the world, and it will become more acute in the future. One answer to the growing problem of adequate water supplies is the development of new sources. Very significant quantities of brackish underground and surface waters exist in certain areas and an inexhaustible supply of ocean water is available. Thus in many areas water resources can be extended through saline water conversion. Congress recognized the need for new sources of fresh water in 1952 and passed the Saline Water Act, Public Law 448, amended it in 1955, and in September 1958, enacted Public Law 85-883, calling for the construction of at least five demonstration plants. The program is administered by the Dept. of Interior through the Office of Saline Water, and its primary objective is to reduce the cost of converted water produced, whether it be by development of new processes or improvement of known processes. This is a most difficult problem and one that will require several years of prodigious effort. It is difficult—not because of any intricate or new chemistry, engineering, or physics involved—but because of the difficulty in converting water at low cost. Whatever the sources of the saline water, the salts which are held tenaciously in solution must be removed before the water becomes suitable for industrial or domestic uses. Saline water is a relatively simple system of salts dissolved in water. It has certain chemical and physical properties that determine the various methods by which the salts may be separated from the water. The system, although not complex, in most instances, has had countless years in which to reach equilibrium and is, therefore, comparatively stable. Because of its stability, separation of saline solutions requires relatively large quantities of energy. The unique properties of water depend on the fact that its molecules are chemically active. The chemical and physical properties of water are associated with the type of bonding involved in the water molecule. Chemical changes such as hydrolysis, or rusting of iron, involve the breaking of chemical bonds between the hydrogen and oxygen atoms. Physical changes, such as evaporation in a boiler, the melting of ice, or the viscous resistance to flow in a pipe, involve breaking of the hydrogen bonds. (The hydrogen nucleus is so small that it can attract two negative atoms.) Thus water molecules not only combine with molecules of other compounds but even with one another; e.g., each molecule may be bounded to four other molecules. Water molecules cling to the ions of dissolved salt to form water-encumbered hydrated ions and they cling to one another to form entangling networks through which hydrated ions can be propelled only by tearing the networks apart. That is one reason why considerable energy still needs to be expended in our simplest procedures for purifying water. If water molecules did not have this habit of clinging so tenaciously to other molecules, and to one another, it would be easy to push salt ions past the water molecule and get a separation. But the water would not then dissolve salt, so the problem would not exist.' Water when heated evaporates very slowly, relative to other liquids having simple molecules. Vaporization involves the separation of molecules from the liquid, and this means overcoming the attraction between molecules which is due to the hydrogen bonding. The heat of vaporization for water is high; consequently, the boiling point of water is also high. Water boils at 100" C; hydrogen sulfide (H2S) at -60" C; oxygen (02) at -183" C; nitrogen (N2) at -196" C; and methane (CH4) at-161°C, even though the latter has about the same molecular weight as water. Because of these peculiar properties of water, it exists as a liquid on earth instead of a gas such as hydrogen sulfide or nitrogen and oxygen.

GRAVITY surveying with the torsion balance or the pendulum for ore prospecting purposes has generally not been considered practical or even possible. It is the intention of this paper to show that a fast and sensi-tive gravimeter can be very useful in ore prospecting, as an auxiliary to the electrical and magnetic instruments. A number of gravimeters have been constructed and put in practical use in the last seven or eight years; for instance, by Ising, Lejay-Holweck, Haalck, Hartley, Thyssen, Noergaard, the Humble Oil and Refining Co. and the Gulf Production Co. Their main application, apart from their use for geodetic surveys, has been for structure mapping in oil prospecting. There is no record that any of them have been used for ore prospecting. About the middle of 1934 the Boliden Mining Co., in Sweden, began experiments in constructing a static gravity meter sensitive enough for ore prospecting. Calculations and considerations that will be discussed later in this paper showed that this would necessitate an accuracy in the measurements of 0.1 milligal-roughly, one ten-millionth part of the total force of gravity. The first successful practical field tests of the instrument were made in January 1936. About the middle of 1937 the Boliden gravimeter was perfected. Ore prospecting with this instru-ment is now regular practice in Sweden, especially for the testing of indications given by geoelectric and magnetic methods.
