To assist the mining industry in attacking problems of water control, the U. S. Geological Survey has begun a program of research in mining hydrology. In certain fundamental respects water control is similar to development of water supplies from wells or to the drainage of agricultural lands, as many of the tools developed in recent years for quantitative ground-water problems are applicable, with modification, to mine-water problems. In 1952 a 30-day pumping test conducted jointly by the Eureka Corp. Ltd. and the Defense Minerals Exploration Agency provided an opportunity to gain knowledge concerning water movements around a flooded mine shaft. The methods of analyzing the data may be used as a guide for the evaluation of similar problems elsewhere.

It is a fair assumption that the main purpose of any diagram is to present facts to the eye in more convenient form than they could be tabulated in figures, and this implies that a screen diagram should set forth in a convenient and familiar form certain facts as to the character of the material screened regardless of the screen standards used, and it seems particularly desirable on account of the well-known differences in the size of openings of different laboratory screens having the same nominal mesh. In making screen-sizing tests it has been customary first to consider the largest size, going progressively to the smallest, and this seems to have led to the practice of placing the smallest size .at the right-hand side of the diagram and measuring toward the left. This is not altogether convenient and might be changed to advantage, but for illustration I have preserved that feature and present the method just as I have used it for over 2 years. Direct plotting in which the intervals on the diagram are proportional to the sizes of the openings, or to the arithmetical difference between them, seems at first sight more natural and is extremely useful for certain purposes, but it makes the diagram very crowded in the smaller screen sizes while the larger ones occupy unnecessary space, making it less convenient for most purposes, and for that reason the method here discussed is the well-known one based on the ratio between openings, and is plotted in logarithms instead of the direct values of the screen opening. Metric coordinate paper is convenient, although not necessary; it is recommended, as the use of the metric scale gives a diagram of convenient size, but any scale of equal parts may be used. In order to make any screen diagram translatable in terms of any standard screen size, it is necessary to have noted on the size scale of the diagram all points corresponding to the openings of the various screens in question, instead of a single series of points as with a single screen. In drawing the diagram assume 0.001 in. (corresponding approximately to 0.025 mm.) to be the smallest size to be considered and fix this as the zero point at the lower right-hand corner of the diagram. This value is selected because the values are to be plotted in logarithms, and the logarithm of 1 is zero. Then lay off to the left for the position of each screen

THE magneto-optic method of analysis had its origin in experiments1 which were designed to detect and measure a time lag in the Faraday effect and later to study this time lag as a function of the wave length of the light.2 Faraday discovered in 1845 that a beam of plane polarized light, when passed through a transparent, isotropic medium traversed by a magnetic field of force parallel to the direction of the light, suffers a rotation. The direction of rotation is reversed with the reversal of the magnetic field and its magnitude depends upon the strength of the field, the length of the path of light in the substance and the nature of the substance. This phenomenon of magnetic rotation is known as the Faraday effect. A question which had been of some interest for years was whether this power of a liquid to rotate polarized light is acquired instantly with the application of the magnetic field, that is, whether it is a case of instantaneity or whether there is a very small interval of time which intervenes between the application of the magnetic field and the consequent rotation of the light by the liquid; in other words, whether there is a time lag in the Faraday effect. Efforts to measure such a lag previously had met with failure. It was recognized at the outset' that since a time lag had escaped detection it must be extremely small, if to a measurable extent it exists at all. It became necessary therefore to adopt a timing device capable of making measures of almost infinitesimally small intervals. The velocity of light served as this timing device, a modification of a method originally employed by Abraham and Lemoine3 being adapted to the requirements of the problem. Since light travels about 30 cm. in a billionth of a second and since settings in our observations may be repeated with deviations not exceeding 3 mm.,

THE blast furnace of the Columbia Steel Corpn., at Ironton; Utah, was put in blast April 30, 1924, and its operation has presented some interesting problems. The coke for the furnace is furnished by 33 Koppers Becker type ovens of 15 tons capacity each. The coal is shipped from the company's mine at Columbia, Utah, which is approximately 123 miles from Ironton, and is probably the highest volatile coal that is being coked for blast furnace use in this country. UNTIL recently, the characteristics of cast copper have seldom been studied and such study as has been made has been inadequate. The prevailing idea seems to be that since pure copper is infrequently used in the cast state, there is no reason for trying to establish precise data regard-ing the properties of the metal in that condition. On the other hand, wrought copper either in the shape of sheets or wire rarely fails in service, except as a result of the action of reducing gases at the annealing tempera-tures, so there is little incentive to study the properties of the cast shapes -cakes, bars, ingots and billets-for-the sake of tracing the causes of failures of the wrought metal to the cast stock. However, about a decade ago, wirebars of American origin often cracked badly while being hot-rolled in mills in Germany. This led to four investigations: by E. Seidl and E. Schiebold,1 by P. Siebe,2 by O. Bauer and G. Sachs,3 and by G. Welter.4 These authors came to the conclusion that failures in hot-rolling were due essentially to the presence .of a wide zone of columnar crystals between the thin layer of fine crystals near the surfaces of the bars and the large but more nearly equiaxed grains of the central core. This macrostructural defect was explained in turn by the probable upward deviation in the temperature of the metal while it was being poured into the molds of the casting machine. More recently, cast shapes of copper were investigated by N. P. Allen5 and by C. Blazey.6 Allen examined vertically cast wirebars and hori-zontally cast wedge cakes of electrolytic tough-pitch copper, but only for the distribution of densities; i.e., porosity. Blazey was interested mainly in the mechanism of the variations in electrical conductivity clue to cold-work and anneal, but gave introductively an account of the composi-tion and average densities of the tough-pitch horizontally cast wirebars used. As far as the present writer can tell, no investigation was under-taken for the sake of presenting a picture of the distribution of mechanical characteristics in the wirebars of copper, tough-pitch or otherwise.

A three-dimensional photoelastic study was made to determine the stress state around the wall and bottom of a wellbore due to fluid pressure within the wellbore and unequal principal geostatic stresses. Models simulating the wellbore were made from a phthalic anhydride-cured epoxy resin. The frozen stress technique of three-dimensional photoelastic-ity was used to determine the stresses within the model. Two separate problems were solved: (1) hydrostatic pressure on all sides of the model with the exception of the inside of the hole, and (2) uniaxial compression perpendicular to the center line of the hole. The results are presented in the form of contour curves for each stress component. The curves cover a region which extends several hole radii from the bottom and wall of the hole. By proper use of these results, the state of stress may be calculated for any point on the wall or bottom of the hole, as well as for any point within the material that surrounds the hole. A systematic method is given for calculating these stress components for any combination of fluid pressure within the wellbore and system of unequal principal geostatic stresses, provided one of the principal geostatic stresses is parallel with the wellbore. The results show that stresses around the wall and bottom of a wellbore, induced by an uneyual system of principal geostatic stresses, are appreciably different from those induced by geostatic stresses that are hydrostatic. For uneyual principal geostatic stresses, the experimentally determined stresses on the wall of the hole several radii from the bottom are in good agreement with the stresses calculated by elastic theory. INTRODUCTION Interest in the problem of determining the stresses around and near the bottom of a wellbore, due to geostatic loading and fluid pressure within the wellbore, originated in the petroleum industry. The stresses on the wall of the wellbore are of interest due to their relation to lost circulation during drilling, the fracturing of formations during squeeze cementing and hydraulic fracturing of producing formations. The stresses on the bottom of the hole are of interest to the drilling segment of the industry because to produce a hole in the earth it is necessary to remove material from the bottom of the hole. This removal of material is produced by structural failure of the rock, whatever the criterion for failure may be. Cunningham and Eeninkl have shown that for certain conditions the effect on drilling rate of the bottom-hole stresses caused by a hydrostatic overburden pressure is small compared to other effects. This question, however, needs further experimental and analytical investigation. Much information concerning the stresses on the walls of wellbores has been published considering both equal and unequal principal geostatic stresses. The problem of determining the stresses around the bottom of the wellbore is considerably more complicated. However, previous investigators have obtained numerical and experimental solutions to the problem for equal principal geostatic stresses. whitworth2 and woods3 have obtained numerical solutions. word415 obtained a three-dimensional photoelastic solution, Durelli and Deily 6 obtained surface stresses only by photoelastic means, and Cheatham and Wilhoit7 determined the stresses around the bottom of a short cylindrical cavity. While Miles and McGuire, Harrison and Kieschnick and Hubbert and Willis 10 obtained the stresses on the wall of a wellbore for unequal principal geostatic stresses, they did not concern themselves with the stresses near the bottom of the hole. The estimates made by Hubbert and Willis of the differences between the principal geostatic stresses indicate that, to obtain a satisfactory solution for the stresses around the bottom of a wellbore, unequal principal geostatic stresses should be considered. THE fact that a symposium on pyrometry is being held under the auspices of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers may very properly be taken as a recognition of the importance of temperature measurements and control in production and in the industries, and of the need for instruction in pyrometry in our schools of engineering. Though there may be general agreement as to the need of some instruction along this line, there will undoubtedly be divergence of opinion as to the amount of time that can be allowed to such instruction, as well as to its character. Those who have given little attention to the complexity of high-temperature measurements will be apt to think that a few simple experiments are all that is required. They fail to distinguish between the artisan, who merely has to learn how to use any piece of apparatus that is installed, and the technically trained man, who must be prepared to assume the responsibility for the supervision and maintenance of the pyrometric equipment, for the calibration of the instruments, and for the solution of any temperature problems that arise. In approaching this subject two questions present themselves: What should be the character of the instruction in pyrometry in an engineering school, and what can be expected of the students who have had this instruction? In brief, it may be said that the aims of a course in pyrometry should be to give: (1) A thorough grounding in the fundamental principles of thermoelectric, resistance, radiation, and optical pyrometry, and of liquid and gas thermometry; (2) practical instruction in the calibration of pyrometers; (3) acquaintance with the errors that are likely to arise and the precautions that must be observed in practice; (4) information regarding the limitations of the various classes of instruments, their relative reliability, and the accuracy attainable with them at different temperatures; (5) acquaintance with the commercial instruments on the market, their construction and relative merits; (6) a knowledge of the chief sources of information relating to the measurement of high and low temperatures. Many attempts have been made to develop a relation between the tensile properties and the deep-stamping qualities of metals commonly used in deep drawing. These operations are generally performed cold and the metal is always stressed beyond the elastic limit. However, the problem cannot be readily solved without a proper investigation of: (1) the relation between actual stress and actual strain in the plastic range and (2) the stresses that are set up in the metal during the process of deep stamping. Much work has been done in recent years to add to our knowledge on plastic deformation of metals and the shortcomings of the ordinary tensile test, particularly in the plastic range, have been sufficiently recognized. It has been widely acknowledged that the local contraction, which appears in a tensile test after the maximum load is reached, is not a general characteristic of the material but is peculiar to this form of testing. The plastic deformation of materials is explained by the slip of their crystals along certain planes and this rearrangement should be similar whether observed in a tensile, compression or torsion test, and if the results of any of these forms of testing show deviations, it must be due to other influences, as for example the local contraction in a tensile test. For this reason the tensile-test curve as obtained from the measurements taken on a tensile-test machine or registered by an autographic device has been supplemented by the so-called "actual stress-strain curve," which is constructed from the observed tensile-test data by eliminating the effect of local contraction and is in complete alignment with the stress-strain values obtained in a compresison or torsion test. The actual stress-strain curve shows the increase of actual unit stress in relation to unit elongation beyond the yield point and beyond the point of maximum load and indicates clearly the extent of strain-hardening which the ordinary tensile-test curve does not reveal. ALTHOUGH the problem of well spacing is one of the most important involved in the production of oil, it must be considered at the present time as still subject to further development. The published literature on this question is so voluminous that we cannot enter here into a review of it, except to refer to the recent papers by L. L. Foley1 and E. A. Stephen-son,2 where other references are cited. However, a decisive and conclu-sive answer to the problem of well spacing in any general form does not seem to have been developed. And while we shall be unable to present the desired solution in the present paper, it is nevertheless felt that the material to be given here not only provides the physical ground work for the ultimate solution, but shows qualitatively the essential factors that enter the well-spacing problem. Field studies of the well-spacing problem, in which the ultimate recoveries from different fields with different well spacings have been compared, have generally suffered from the lack of knowledge as to the similarity of the inherent characteristics of the producing reservoirs being compared, such as the sand volumes, the sand porosities, the sand permeabilities, the original reservoir pressures, the presence or absence of gas caps, the presence or absence of effective water drives, and the economic limits of production rates at which the various fields were considered to have yielded their ultimate recoveries. Certainly no one who is evaluating originally the economic significance of any oil reservoir would deliberately ignore these phases of the problem. And it is equally certain that no one would reasonably expect the ultimate recoveries from two reservoirs, even with the same well spacing, to be identical regardless of these other factors. More reliable results might be expected from comparisons of the recoveries obtained from different leases with different well spacings, but producing from the same reservoir sand. Unfortunately, however, even conclusions for such studies may be subject to serious errors. The reason simply is that however much one may insist that an operator is entitled only to the oil immediately underneath his surface acreage he will nevertheless drain the surrounding properties as long as his reservoir

MEDELLIN, the famous old capital of the Province of Antioquia in Colombia, is in the heart of the Cauca Valley, famous for its beauty and wealth. Through the kindness of R. S. Botsford, we present a panorama of the city, showing the 5000-ft. mountains in the background, a picture of the cathedral, locally said to be the largest building in South America, and a sketch of the diversion work on the Nari river, near Alejandria, where C. J. London is opening 42 kilometers of placer ground. One of the hydraulic elevators at the mine is also shown. Medellin was formerly much isolated but 19 now connected with navigation on the Magdalena River by a railway from Puerto Berrio, passing through a recently completed tunnel under the central Andes.

The success of the Charpy impact test in the steel industry has led those interested in aluminum alloys to investigate the possible application of this test to aluminum and its alloys. In this paper are set forth the results of a few preliminary tests made at the Lynite Laboratories of the Aluminum Manufactures, Inc. In order to study more thoroughly the significance of the Charpy test, slow-bending tests have been made duplicating the arrangement of the impact machine. Tests have been made on both notched and unnotched specimens of a series of copper-aluminum alloys. Apparatus The standard American-made Charpy impact machine delivering a blow of over 200 ft.-lb. was much too large to test aluminum-alloy specimens of the same type used for steel, so that it was necessary either to adopt a larger specimen or to have a special light-weight hammer made. Since there is no known relation between specimens of different sixes, even though geometrically similar, it was decided to adhere to the 10 by 10 mm. specimen. Accordingly, Sauveur and Boylston, the American makers of the machine, were asked to construct a special light-weight pendulum adapted to their standard machine, this pendulum to have one-tenth the capacity of the standard. The writer wishes here to acknowledge his indebtedness to Mr. H. M. Boylston for the personal interest and care exercised in constructing this pendulum. The machine with the light-weight hammer in place is shown in Fig. I. It is mounted on a concrete foundation with the concrete covering the flange on the base of the machine. Vibration is further prevented by four 5/8-in. (15.8 mm.) foundation bolts. The large standard hammer shown against the wall was also used for some of the unnotched bars that required more than 20 ft.-lb. to rupture. THE rating of a mine ventilation fan, or the characteristic curves illustrating the duty it may be expected to perform under various mine conditions are, in general, determined by the fan manufacturers. The information is of importance to the operator, or engineer, of a mine in many ways. For instance, when an increased flow of air is desired and the fan speed is to be increased, it becomes necessary to know what increase in volume may be expected and what the power requirements will be. In other cases, it may be decided to make changes in the mine to reduce the resistance to the flow of air, or to make changes in the general system of ventilation. Under any changed mine conditions there will be a difference in the duty performed by the fan. When mechanical ventilation is adopted, the factors governing the selection of equipment for the new system include not only the requirements of existing conditions, but also those that may be expected with the development of the property. Efficiency of service is required over a variable range of operating conditions. Characteristic curves, giving the duty performed by their fans under variable resistance conditions, are published by most fan manufacturers. General statements as to the effect of variation in speed of the centrifugal-type fan, under fixed mine conditions, appear in textbooks and trade catalogs. However, to the author both sources of information appear to be unreliable, at least under certain circumstances. The catalog of a leading fan manufacturer says: 1. The volume of air delivered by a fan varies directly as the speed. 2. The pressure, or water gage, produced by a fan varies as the square of the fan speed. 3. The horsepower of a fan varies as the cube of the fan speed. While these statements are accurate when the fan is operating under conditions similar to those that exist when a blower is used to force air through a pipe, they are not correct under mine conditions that are by no means unusual. A three-parameter mathematical model for one-dimensional flow in porous media is developed. The objective of the model is to predict accurately the longitudinal dispersion associated with the flow of either gases or liquids over a wide range of Reynolds number. A qualitative analysis of the model parameters is given. Published experimental pulse-response curves are compared with results predicted by the model. Several general types of problems are given for which the model can be used. INTRODUCTION The problem of multicomponent single-phase flow through porous media is encountered in the study of petroleum reservoirs, gas chromatographic and ion-exchange columns, industrial fixed-bed con-tacters and elsewhere. These particular examples span the wide range of flow conditions possible; Reynolds numbers of less than l0-4 are not unusual in oil-production problems, while values in excess of 103 are common in large fixed-bed operations. The study of flow-dependent transport phenomena is complicated both by the changes in the character of the flow over this range, and by the irregularity of the flow boundaries inherent to porous media. Dispersion is one of the important phenomena known to depend fundamentally on flow conditions as well as on fluid and medium properties. As used in this paper, the term "dispersion" refers to the observed mixing of fluid elements of different composition which occurs in flow systems. The actual mechanism may be one or more of a number listed below. Only dispersion in the direction of the mean flow (referred to as axial or longitudinal dispersion, or mixing) is considered here, although lateral dispersion arises as part of certain coupled mechanisms. MECHANISMS FOR LONGITUDINAL DISPERSION A number of distinct mechanisms are known3,5,7,8 to contribute to the phenomenon of longitudinal dispersion. The more important of these are as follows. 1. Molecular diffusion in the flow direction. 2. Turbulent (cell) mixing. 3. Lateral transport processes coupled with velocity and/or residence time distributions, including: (a) "Taylor" diffusion caused by the interaction of velocity profiles in individual voids with lateral molecular diffusion; (b) separation and remixing or interdiffusion of streams having different velocities around particles; and (c) the couplipg of gross velocity profiles, caused by viscous instability or inhomogeneous porosity, with lateral dispersion. 4. Finite mass-transfer rate between a porous matrix and the flowing phase, and finite diffusion rate inside elements of the porous matrix. It is a well documented fact that these mechanisms, whether acting individually or in combinations, produce essentially similar integral effects. The observed dispersion can be described approximately by solutions of the diffusion equation with a properly chosen dispersion coefficient. Necessary conditions for equivalence between dispersion and diffusion are discussed by Klinkenberg and Sjenitzer.7 Apparently these conditions are not satisfied exactly in many real systems. "Best fit" solutions of the diffusion equation often depart appreciably from measured breakthrough curves for the usual pulse- or step-forced experimental systems. In particular, pulse response curves usually show some degree of asymmetry and "tailing" which cannot be reproduced by the one-parameter diffusion model. The three-parameter model proposed herein attempts to produce these effects in a realistic manner. Asymmetry and tailing are predicted for certain sets of parameter values, while for other sets the new model agrees with the diffusion model. The titanium-rich end of the Ti-AI phase diagram has been determined to the compound TiAI3 (62.7 pct Al), thus joining the aluminum-rich portion previously investigated by others and completing the diagram. Micrographic analysis and X-ray diffraction were the chief methods used to determine the phase relationships. THE Ti-Al phase diagram has been investigated as part of a program on titanium phase diagrams for the Wright Air Development Center. Included in the available information concerning the phase relationships in titanium-rich Ti-A1 alloys is a brief statement by Brown' that: "aluminum raises the transformation temperature to 1000°C (183Z°F)." This observation is interesting in that it is the first example of a metallic alloying component raising the transformation temperature of titanium, and consequently widening the field of the a solid solution. Busch and Freyer' presented resistivity data which indicated the formation of titanium-rich solid solutions of 1 and 3 pct A1 alloys prepared by powder metallurgy methods. Duweza found that there is only one other intermediate phase other than the known compound TiA1, (62.7 pct Al). This phase, designated as y, is of variable composition; its crystal structure is of the AuCu type and is therefore based on the composition TiAl (36.02 pct Al). Earlier work on the constitution of the aluminum-rich alloys has been reviewed by Hansen, and need not be discussed here. The tetragonal crystal lattice of TiAl,, as found by Fink, Van Horn, and Budge," was confirmed by Brauer." Recently, Schubert7 has reported that TiA1, is homogeneous within a limited composition range; however, the solubility limits were not given. The Ti-A1 phase diagram as presented in. this paper was determined by micrographic analysis of alloys containing from 1 to 62 pct Al, annealed at and quenched from temperatures between 700" and 1400°C. The phases and phase ranges investigated extend to the compound TiA1, (62.7 pct Al) to join the aluminum-rich end of the system determined by other investigators, thus completing the diagram. Methods of Investigation Preparation of Alloys: Iodide titanium, 99.9+ pct pure, obtained from the New Jersey Zinc Co., and high-purity (99.99+ pct) aluminum sheet from the Aluminum Co. of America were used to make up alloy ingots weighing 10 to 20 g. Detailed descriptions of melting techniques have been presented previously for work on the Ti-Mo and Ti-Cb> nd Ti-Si" phase diagrams. Briefly, the melting practice consisted of arc melting an accurately weighed charge in a copper block crucible insert in a non-consumable tungsten electrode furnace, under helium at atmospheric pressure. All ingots were carefully weighed after melting to detect possible losses. Comparison of weight before and after melting showed no appreciable weight changes. Also, chemical analyses were in close agreement with nominal compositions, Table I. The diagram as presented is, therefore, based on nominal compositions. Alloys were prepared having the following nominal aluminum contents: 1 ... 36 (1 pct increments), 38, 40, 41, 42.5, 44, 45, 46, 47.5, 49 . . . 64 (1 pct increments), 67, 70, 80, and 90. Ingots with up to 14 pct A1 were cold-pressed various amounts in order to increase the rate of attaining equilibrium structures on heat treatment. The amount of cold deformation that could be applied decreased with increasing aluminum content, until alloys containing 12 pct A1 or more cracked after only a few percent deformation. The activity of Sb,03 in PbO-Sb,03 slags containing less than 50 mol pct Sb,03 was determined by the inert-gas saturation method at 700°C. In this composition range, the activity gf SbzO3 shows a strong negative deviation from ideality. The activity of PbO in these slags was calculated by application of the Gibbs-Duhem iniegration to the Sb203 activity data. The calculated activity of PbO in slags containing more than 63 mol pct PbO was found to deviate in a positive direction from ideality uthile a negative deviation was found for slags containing less PbO. The standard Gibbs free energies of formation of Sb,03 and PbO. Sb203 have been calculated and compared with existing data in the literature. The activity of Sb203 in PbO-Si0,-Sb203 (PbO/SiO, = 2) slags containing less than 25 mol pct Sb,03 was also determined by the inert-gas saturation method at 700°C. In this composition range, the activity of Sbz03 shows a very large negative deviation from ideality. VERY little experimental work has been published in the past to determine equilibrium data in the oxide systems connected with the refining of lead. These data are of value since impurities such as antimony, arsenic, and tin must be removed from lead and recovered for further treatment. Equilibrium studies on antimony and arsenic systems are also of interest for the design of new processes for lead refining and lead dross treatment. Maier and ~incke' first determined the liquidus curves for the PbO-Sb203 system and identified the compound PbO . Sb203. They found the phase diagram for this system to be two simple eutectics located on either side of the congruent melting compound. They also determined a very limited amount of vapor pressure data for Sb406 abbve PbO-Sba3 melts at 697"~. A second phase diagram investigation on this system was reported by Hennig and Kohlmeyer' who confirmed the existence of the compound PbO . Sb203 as well as the form of the diagram. A disagreement was noticed, however, in that their liquidus temperatures over nearly the entire composition range were higher than those reported by Maier and Hincke. Barthel~ and pelze14 redetermined the liquidus curve at the PbO-rich end of the PbO-Sb@, system and agreed very closely with the results of Maier and Hincke. None of the investigators mentioned above reported any mutual solid solubility in the PbO-SbD3 system. Zunkel and Larson5 have determined the phase diagram for the PbO-rich end of the PbO-Sb203 system by slag-metal equilibrium studies in the Pb-PbO-Sb203 system and by thermal analysis studies in the PbO-Sbz03 system. A maximum solid solubility of 5.6 mol pct Sb203 in PbO was observed at the eutectic temperature of 604°C. Their results for the phase diagram agree favorably with those of Maier and Hincke. The vapor pressure of Sb2O3 in the temperature range from 470" to 800°C has been determined by Hincke, using a modification of the transportation meth~d.~ His results for temperatures below the melting point of Sba3 are the only data reported in the published literature. The predominant vapor species has been shown to be Sb,06 by Norman and staley.? Myzenkov and Klushin,8 using the boiling-point method, have determined the pressure of Sb406 above liquid SbD3 in the temperature range from 715" to 1025°C. The agreement between these two studies is not very close. A portion of the discrepancy lies in the fact that Hincke used silica crucibles, which were attacked by the liquid Sbz03 at high temperatures. This fact does not account, however. for the large difference observed at the melting point. ~aier' gives a brief summary of vapor pressure data for Sb,O, above pure liquid Sbz03 which agree quite well with the data of Myzenkov and Klushin at temperatures near the melting point. This paper describes the determination of Sb2O3 activity data in the PbO-Sb203 and Pb0-Si02-Sb203 (PbO/SiOz = 2) systems by the inert-gas saturation method. These activity data are compared with the data calculated by Zunkel and arson. EXPERIMENTAL Materials. The materials used in this investigation were analytical reagent-grade PbO (99.8 pct PbO, 0.14 pct insoluble in CHsCOOH, 0.02 pct not precipitated by HB, 0.1 pct CaO, and 0.08 pct SiOz), Sbf13 (99.6 pct Sb203, 0.004 PC~ C1-, 0.005 PC~ SO;-, 0.15 p~t AS, 0.001 pct Fe, and 0.03 pct other heavy metals such as Pb), and SiOz (chromatographic grade). Apparatus for Vapor Pressure Determinations. The apparatus used in this investigation consisted of a transportation reaction system with two separate gas trains. The argon transporting gas was first mixed with a small amount of hydrogen, metered, and dried by passage through silica gel and anhydrone drying tubes arranged in series. After this preliminary drying, the argon was passed through copper wool at 500°C to convert the residual oxygen to water vapor which was removed by three anhydrone drying tubes. A second stream of argon was metered and dried and then passed around the outside of the alumina reaction tube to flush away the volatile species to pre-

A slurry of fine coal and water will be fed into the line and moved through it under pressure. * Sulphur resources in the U.S. are being rapidly exhausted with no new major deposits being found, This common mineral may become one of the most strategic items during the next five years. Recovery of sulphur from pyrites is being considered in case of an emergency. Already the British have adopted stringent measures to conserve sulphur supplies.

Many excellent papers, descriptive of the milling and smelting of every kind of commercial ores, the refining of virgin metals, the casting into various shapes demanded by the trade, the rolling into shapes best suited to the factory machinery and the making of composition alloys to suit every requirement have been issued by the many technical societies dealing with non-ferrous metals. It is a wonderful collection of papers, of which the mining and metallurgical engineers may well be proud, but strange as it may seem, metallurgists in general appear to take the stand that when they have delivered suitable alloys to the foundry and rolled products to the factory their duty to write papers has ceased, at least in so far as the A. I. M. E. is concerned. Still we read in the daily papers that the mining companies are absorbing metal-manufacturing industries. The purpose of this paper is to describe the reclaiming of non-ferrous scrap metals at manufacturing plants, taking as an example the automobile industry. Collection and Disposition of Scrap Until about five years ago, much of the factory scrap, with little or no preliminary treatment, was sold to secondary-metal smelters. Of late years the factory salvage department has become an important part, of the plant in reclaiming everything of value and incidentally does much of the work formerly done by the smelters. Like most good things, it is sometimes overdone, and much work is done at the factory with inexperienced men that could be done much better by experienced skilled labor at the custom smelting plants. Employees of the salvage department collect the waste products in all departments at the source and in that way avoid much contamination. Every reasonable precaution is taken to keep the scrap clean. It is hand-sorted, cut, burned, magnetized, concentrated, separated or compressed, as the case may be, preparatory for re-use in the plant or for selling to others.
