The Southwest Virginia Improvement Company began operations in the Bluestone Flat-Top coal-field, situated in Tazewell County, Virginia, in the fall of 1881. In May, 1883, the company had built 200 coke-ovens, and by March, 188-1, had 9000 feet of entries, exclusive of air-ways, in the Nelson or Rig coal-bed of this district (which here averages eleven feet in thickness), and had extracted 200,000 tons of coal, representing an area of about twenty acres. About this opening has grown the recently incorporated city of Pocahontas, and the completion of the New River branch of the Norfolk and Western Railroad to this point enabled the company to make large contracts for supplying coal and coke, so that it was deemed necessary, on account of the limited area developed, to work the mine day and night to fill orders. At 1.30 Thursday morning, March 13th, the inhabitants of Pocahontas were awakened by a violent shock, and within a few minutes all knew that the East mine had been the scene of an explosion of so general a nature that, of the 114 men at work, not one had escaped. The daily papers gave more or less distorted accounts of the number of victims, the scenes in and about, the mine, and the probable cause of the disaster. At the request of the company, the President of the American Institute of Mining Engineers appointed the undersigned a committee of three to investigate the matter, and the committee thus constituted presents the following report, accompanied by a copy of the testimony taken daring the investigation, for preservation in the archives of the Institute. Pocahontas was reached on Thursday, April 24th, and left on Friday, May 2d. During this interval the committee made repeated visits to the mine, especially to the points, of most importance, examining it carefully in every part; and summoned a number of witnesses, twenty-six of whom appeared and testified. Probably no ferrous metallurgical process has ever found such ready acceptance and rapid expansion as the pelletizing of iron ores. The process was first commercialized in the early 1950's and since then it has grown to the point where the amount of material pelletized worldwide will approach 100 million tons in 1971. The term agglomeration is used to describe any process by which fine material is formed into larger shapes or agglomerates and includes, in addition to pelletizing, such processes as sintering and briquetting. Sintering cannot be used to efficiently agglomerate iron materials containing a high percentage of 100-mesh fines but the method has been widely used over many decades for agglomerating flue dust, mill scale and iron ore finer than 3/8 in.

The converting of lead matte is not a general practice at lead smelters, therefore a description of the methods used and developments made during the past 20 years in converting both lead and copper matte at the Tooele plant of the International Smelting Co. in Utah may be of interest. The Tooele converting plant consists of five electrically operated stands in which are used 96 by 150-in. horizontal, barrel-type converters each of about 10 tons capacity. The main converter building is served by a 60-ton electric traveling crane and the casting shed by a 30-ton crane. Copper matte is tapped from near-by reverberatory furnaces into launders that deliver into 8-ton ladles on the converter floor. Lead matte is brought from the blast furnaces, about li mile away, in 5-ton ladles mounted on trucks, hauled by electric locomotives. As the Tooele copper plant has never been a producer of much copper, and has been Irregular in its operation, the original converting plant with its small converters has been adcquate, although decidedly out of step with large, modern plants. Tonnage figures in this paper are for comparison with each other only, as they are not at all in line with prevailing tonnages at larger plants today. The reasons for the changes made in converting practice at Tooele, as well as the improvements in the results obtained as these changes were perfected, are given in the following pages. Lead-matte Converting, 1914 to 1927 In 1914, Oscar M. Kuchs wrote a paper for the Transactions,' describing in detail the lead-matte converting methods at Tooele up to that time. The method perfected only a few months before Mr. Kuchs' paper was written consisted, briefly, of blowing the lead matte alone, without the addition of siliceous fluxing ores, to a point where the lead and zinc were largely eliminated by volatilization. UNDERGROUND lighting in the zinc mines of the Tri-State district can be separated into four di-visions. 1. Foot of shaft. 2. Pumps, fans. incline hoists and other stationary machinery. 3. Haulage ways. 4. Headings and stopes. One of the main improvements in lighting around the bottom of the shaft is in the use of skidoo flash lights, which have replaced the old electric skidoo bells. These bells were used as signals from the hoisterman to the tub hooker. In the event that a can bumped the side of shaft or a rock spilled from the can when dumping; the hoisterman rang the skidoo bells as a signal for all to leave the vicinity of the shaft bottom on a dead run. These bells were much better than no signal at all, but many of them were often out of order; the worst feature being that when out of order this fact was not immediately indicated. The electric flash-light signals work on the opposite principle and are burning at all times except when the hoisterman breaks the circuit when signaling danger. Therefore should a break or short occur in this arrangement, the shaft bottom is immediately thrown in darkness. Since the reaction from the eye is quicker than from ear, there is a slight saving of time- to the men escaping from the point of danger. Even this brief period of time may save a life. One other, point, to be emphasized, is that all lights near the shaft bottom should be on the signal circuit so that the entire area is momentarily darkened. I. have inspected mines where only one or two lights are used as signals, with the remaining lights around the shaft on another fixed circuit. In this case the flashing of the signal lights is almost drowned out by the stationary lights. These flash signals must be as startling as possible, which can only be done by flash-ing all the lights.

The question, Who won the war?, has been the text for innumerable newspaper, and magazine articles, the answers running from "bread and butter" to "poison gas," in a material sense, and from the "Y. M. C. A." to the "boys in the front lines," humanly speaking. Personally, I think the margin by which success was secured was so narrow that none of the complex, interdependent factors could have been .spared, and that, as Admiral Sampson said after the battle of Santiago: "There is glory, enough for all." But if any one human factor can be said to have been absolutely indispensable, I think all will agree that it was the engineer. The engineer, as a rule, is a modest fellow, so modest in fact and so averse to publicity of any kind that, referring to him as a class, he was hardly occupying the place he should in public estimation before the war. By way of illustration, in the early history of a mine in Bisbee, the chief owner was also the proprietor of a saloon and spent most of his time there. When asked why he did not pay more attention to the mine, lie replied: "Oh! I can hire a boy to look after that; it takes a man to run this bar." Comparisons of the position and pay of engineers with other occupations are sometimes made to show that the engineer is not getting all that he should, considering the time of preparation and the qualifications required. Perhaps at least a part of the cause may be his aloofness from many of the practical affairs of everyday life. Whether he won the war or not, the part played by the engineer has certainly placed him on a sort of pedestal in the public estimation at present and it is very desirable to keep him there and maintain the position he has made for himself.

THE Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. has produced a large tonnage of 0.35 to 0.45 carbon forging steel, the acceptance of which was based on the physical properties of test specimens obtained by forging the original 5 3/4 in. (14.5 cm.) square bloom to a ¾ in. (1.9 cm.) round. Annealed and tempered specimens were required. The test bars were annealed by heating from 900 ° to 950° C. and cooling slowly in mica. The test bars were tempered by heating to 825° to 875° C., quenching in water, and drawing to 515° to 535° C. Immediately after heat treatment, the test pieces were machined to a diameter of 0.534 in. (1.38 cm.) and tested. Very good physical properties were obtained and no difficulty was experienced in meeting the specifications called for. ULTIMATE STRENGTH, ELONGATION, LB. PER SQ. IN. PER CENT. IN 4 IN. NOT LESS THAN Annealed specimens 78,230 to 92,450 18 Tempered 120,000 to 149,350 9 After experience oil this material, production of slightly higher carbon forging steel was started. The method of testing this material required that test blooms be either normalized or annealed. The normalizing consisted in heating to 850° to 900° C. and cooling in still air; the annealing, in heating to 850° to 900° C. and cooling in the furnace or in mica. From the treated bloom, the test pieces were taken either by core drilling or by sawing from points midway between the edges and the intersection of the diagonals. The cores or blocks were turned to a standard 2-in. test piece with a diameter of 0.564 in. and tested without further treatment. The physical requirements of the test pieces were:

For relative gravity measurements, the author in 1918 described an instrument1 of which the essential part consists of a highly astatized, standing pendulum turning about a horizontal elastic axis. This type of instrument has been used recently in practical field work, therefore a description of its principle and technical development is given herein. Part I, describing the principle, is a direct translation of the original Swedish paper.1 Part II gives an account of the practical elaboration of the instrument, together with some description of measure-ments performed.

From an efficiency viewpoint, the greatest loss of energy to the blast furnace is in its failure to convert more than about a third of the coke carbon from carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide. This result has usually been ascribed to a necessity of a 2:1 excess of CO in order to reduce iron. It has, however, been proved that iron is completely reduced by equal volumes of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. Hence there is room for the hypothesis that vaporization, as cyanid, of accumulated alkalis is a serious primary factor limiting the ratio of ore to coke. Observed cyanid vapor concentrations and those measured by the variations of the nitrogen-oxygen ratio in the hearth gases form the basis for a quantitative explanation of the furnace action. As EVERYBODY knows, the blast furnace is a gas producer. As to the reason for this, people are not so well agreed. The significance of the fact is obvious, for the extent to which the fuel leaves the furnace as combustible gas measures poor economy in iron smelting; while good efficiency in this respect means poor gas. The furnace thus works at cross purposes. The present trend of the steel industry is toward. a primary use of the blast furnace as a gas producer with pig iron as a byproduct. Needless to say, this trend is away from improvement in iron making. The production of more and better iron in a given furnace consuming a given amount of coke would seem, at least, to involve a decrease in the relative proportion of the combustible gas. The possibility at the same time, however, of making more and better gas need not necessarily be excluded. (The more the furnace acts as gas producer, the bigger is the sulfur problem.) Whatever the object, it would seem desirable to have a, clear, comprehensive, mathematically exact estimate of why and how the blast furnace functions, to the large degree that it now does, as a gas producer. The literature does not give a definite answer to the question. That for which explanation is sought is the fact that only a minor part, usually not more than a third, of the coke carbon burned is oxidized to carbon dioxide; that the development in the furnace of the fuel energy is thus limited usually to little more than 50 per cent.; that it requires about twice as much fuel coke to make a ton of iron as is indicated by the rela-

A historical comparison of the frequency of fatal coal mining accidents occurring underground in mines of various size ranges in the United States and in member countries of the Commission of the European Communities is presented. Frequencies are normalized on hours-worked and tons-produced bases. The comparisons rely on published and confirmed data and on theory for selective treatment of data in an effort to overcome reporting differences and basic differences in the mining conditions and system employed. Trends are identified ad projections made of the effect on accident records of various industry growth patterns. Conclusions are drawn regarding the reasons for differences between the records of U.S. underground coal mines and the records of those mines in European countries.

J. S. Unger,* Pittsburgh, Pa. (written discussion?).-I heartily agree with the author's suggestion, near the close of the paper, that greater uniformity in the making and use of brick is desirable. The effect of the manner of laying the brick, the mortar or cement used, the necessity of standardizing the shapes, the elimination of irregular or poorly designed brick, and the necessity for uniform operating conditions were pointed out by me some years ago. Many factors influence the quality of firebricks. The following figures obtained from bricks during their making or after completion show the need for greater uniformity in their quality. These results were obtained from regular commercial bricks, shipped to the consumer. In many cases the samples were from the same car load.

The position of the three-phase field between the alpha and the beta phases was established. The exact location differs from previous assumptions. The extremely high strength and hardness values were found near the phase boundaries of the ternary compositions. IN 1929, UenoL investigated vertical sections of the Ag-Cu-Zn diagram at constant silver and zinc values. From the evaluation of cooling curves and microscopic studies, he concluded that there was no evidence of a three-phase field in the solid state between the a and ,8 fields. The failure to find evidence for this field was due to the fact that it exists only in a very narrow range of compositions and requires special methods of heat treatment to establish phase equilibrium. In a later publication on the same subject Keinert2 rearranged Ueno's diagrams to conform with the basic phase rules. The existence of a three-phase field was postulated in the solid state between the a phases and the homogeneous ,9 phase between the Cu-Zn and the Ag-Zn binary border systems. The approximate location was based on a few microscopic observations of the structure and it was pointed out that the exact position could be determined only by a larger number of experiments. In the twenty years following these investigations alloys of Ag-Cu-Zn have become of general interest due to various technical applications, principally for brazing. In the course of an overall investigation of the physical properties of ternary Ag-Cu-Zn alloys the author found extremely high values of hardness and strength in alloys of compositions between the a and the yS fields. The exact location of the intermediate phase fields was established by the evaluation of more than a hundred cooling curves and microscopic mountings. Following the introduction of shields to the U.S. longwall mining scene and the steady increase in the number of shield faces during recent years, the occurrence of longwall -ground-control -associated accidents has shown a welcome downward trend. But even though the accident experience is favorable, problems exist. New mining systems, however efficient, have run afoul of roof control. Shield faces have suffered extended stoppages because of roof cavities. Therefore, the Bureau of Mines has reviewed foreign remedial techniques to evaluate their potential for domestic application. Such technology includes cribbing, strain absorbent modules (SAM'S), inflatables, wire meshing, chemical rock stabilization, synthetic foams, and monolithic fills.

THE importance, to geologists and metallurgists, of knowing the mineralogical forms in which the silver occurs in ores has increased during the past few years, and will continue to increase as long as working hypotheses are converted into proved theories and rule of thumb methods are supplanted by scientific data. The methods used for the determination of these silver minerals have been: (1) careful study of polished ore sections with the microscope, and more recently, (2) metallurgical separation of the ground ore by flotation, tabling and panning, supplemented by microscopic examination of these separated minerals, and chemical analyses. During the course of some experimental work carried on by the testing department of the International Smelting Co. and myself, it became important to determine, in a general way, the distribution of the silver values in the minerals, as they exist in Tintic Standard and North Lilly siliceous oxidized lead-silver ores. These mines are in the East Tintic Mining District, State of Utah. In this work the second method was used. Differential flotation tests were run, separating the sulfide from the oxidized minerals, and the products were assayed. Various concentrates were carefully panned and the separated products assayed; special samples of ore were selected and assayed. The microscope was used only for the purpose of determin; ing whether the individual minerals were in the so-called "free" state. Analysis of Tintic Ores These chemical and mineralogical determinations showed the silver to be present as native silver, argento jarosite, argentite, and combined or inherent in the tetrahedrite, chalcopyrite, galena, pyrite, cerussite, anglesite, mimetite, malachite, iron oxide and occluded in the quartz. Careful microscopic work would probably show other forms in small amounts, such as the halide silver minerals and some of the antimony sulfide combinations. The tabulation of the analyses of the various products (Table 1) shows no evidences of fixed ratios of silver to any particular base metal.

The effects of mutual interactions between elements on the solubility of nitrogen in liquid iron alloys containing chrormium, columbium, molybdenurn, nickel, or silicon have been determined. The equilibrium nitrogen solubilities in the liquid iron alloys were measured by the Sieverts method. The second-order effects caused by the presence of chrormium, columbium , or silicon in the melt were found to be significant. The solubility of nitrogen in liquid iron alloys containing several alloying elements has also been measured as a function of melt temperature and nitrogen pressure. The heat of solution of nitrogen in microcomponent iron alloys has been found to be a function of the logarithnz of the activity coefficient of nitrogen, irrvespectilje of the composition of the melt. The heat of solution of nitrogen in pure liquid iron was determined to be 1265 ± 450 cal per g-atom of N over the temperatxue range 1600° to 1800°. Sieverts ' law was obeyed for all melt compositions studied in the pressure interval 0.4 to 1.0 atm. The solubility of nitrogen in liquid pure iron and in many dilute binary liquid-iron alloys has been the subject of many investigations. Pehlke and Elliott' made a comprehensive investigation on this subject in which they summarized and compared previous researches. However, the practical application of these solubility studies requires prediction of the nitrogen solubility in the multicomponent alloys encountered in operating practice. The interaction parameter as defined by wagner2 has been used to predict the behavior of a solute in a complex alloy, and a modification of this approach has met with reasonable success in several instances.'1"5 The necessity for extending the nitrogen solubility data on binary alloys is caused by the lack of direct measurements of the solubility of nitrogen in molten alloy steels. A direct comparison between measured solubilities and those predicted for multicomponent alloys based on data in binary systems has been made in only a few instances, and most of these were reviewed by Langenberg,6 who developed a graphical technique for predicting nitrogen solubilities in multicomponent iron alloys. The solubility of nitrogen has also been studied over the entire Fe-Cr-Ni ternary system by Humbert and Elliott.? Both studies compared the solubilities computed from binary iron alloy data with those measured in ternary alloys in the liquid state at 1600°C. Most of the nitrogen solubility measurements referred to above were for iron alloys at 1600°C; thus, the ability to predict nitrogen solubilities in molten iron alloys has been restricted primarily to alloys at 1600°C. Recently, Nelsson8 devised an approximate method for calculating the change in nitrogen solubility in molten iron alloys as a function of temperature, but an assumption of regular solution behavior limits the applicability of the method. Chipman and Corrigan9,10 have developed an empirical correlation. based on the activity coefficient of nitrogen in the iron alloy at 1600°C, which facilitates the estimation of nitrogen solubilities at higher temperatures. This method also has limitations, due to the necessity of calculating the activity coefficient for nitrogen in a multicomponent iron alloy at 1600°C from the nitrogen solubility data for binary iron alloys. The shortcoming of such a straightforward approach to the problem of predicting nitrogen solubilities is the disregard of mutual interactions between elements in a complex iron melt. This investigation was conducted in an attempt to provide a more reliable method of predicting nitrogen solubilities in multicomponent iron alloys. The effects of the mutual interactions between chromium, nickel, silicon, molybdenum, or columbium in iron were studied, using the Sieverts' technique1,7 to measure the effects of alloy composition, temperature, and pressure on the solubility of nitrogen in ternary liquid iron alloys.

TO THE, BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF MINING AND METALLURGICAL ENGINEERS Gentlemen -The following report covers briefly some of the more important activities of the Institute during the year 1923. In my report for the year 1922, I drew attention to the falling off in membership of the Institute due to the depressed condition of the mining industry in several lines and the inability of many of our members to find profitable employment in mining or its associated branches. A number who were unemployed during 1922 established connections during 1923, but a still greater number have been forced to resign or drop their membership during 1923 Fortunately, the number dropped is not so great as in the previous year. The Employment Service conducted by, the four Founder Societies bears witness to the trend in business For the young men just out of college, there are plenty of opportunities at small salaries, there are plenty of opportunities for them as laborers; but for the mature members, those of experience, there are few calls During the last eighteen months, our Employment Service has been able to place only six of our members out of every hundred engineers for whom it has found work. Another loss which this Society has suffered, but which is not felt so keenly by our sister societies, is in its foreign members. The A. I M. E. has always had a large foreign membership, but of recent years exchange has been so heavily against many European and South American coun¬tries that a large number of members residing abroad have been compelled to relinquish their membership Almost invariably these members express keen regret because of the necessity that confronts them, and almost invariably the writers express hope that present conditions will not last long and that they will soon be able to ask for reinstatement. Having stated the darkest side of the picture first, it may now be drawn to your attention that in spite of these losses the number of persons applying for membership was decidedly encouraging. Specimens consisting of several crystals, each with a prescribed geometry and a controlled orientation with respect to both the extermally intposed stress and the highboring crystals, werer deformed in tension at room temperature. It is shown that the influence of a grain boundary on the plastic defolrmation of a mullicrystal depends on the extent to which the presence of the grain boundary, contributes to the necessity 01. multiple slip in the component crystals. MANY investigations were carried out in the past on the plastic deformation of aluminum single crystals, bicrystals, and polycrystals. The various studies of bicrystals aimed primarily at elucidating the influence of grain boundaries on the mechanisms of plastic deformation. In the earlier studies the emphasis was placed primarily on finding the "strength" contributed by a grain boundary. In more recent investigations it became apparent that the grain boundary does not contribute any strength per se but rather acts by influencing the mechanism of plastic deformation in the adjoining grains. The concept thus emerged of the plastic properties of a bi-crystal, and by extension of a polycrystal. depending solely on the mechanism of deformation prevailing in each grain. The contribution of the grain boundaries thus becomes limited to the type of restrictions imposed on each grain by its neighbors. The present investigation of the behavior of specimens consisting of more than two crystals was designed for the purpose of studying the influence of the grain boundary in simple aggregates. The findings of this study further support the concept that the restriction imposed on a deforming crystal by its neighbor constitutes the predominant factor in the plastic deformation of polycrystals. The term "multicrystal", in contrast with single and polycrystals, is used to describe specimens consisting of several crystals. Each one of the component crystals has a prescribed geometry and a controlled orientation with respect to both the externally imposed stress and the neighboring crystals. Two groups of multicrystals were prepared. All the component crystals of both groups of multicrystals had the axial orientation (isoaxial multicrystals) shown in Fig. 2, with the primary slip plane and slip direction both at 45 deg to the specimen axis. In the first group (hereafter referred to as group I) the component crystals were symmetrically oriented with respect to the plane of the grain boundary; the primary slip plane and slip direction were respectively at an angle of 60 and 30 deg to this plane. For the second group (group 11) the axial orientation remained the same and the relative positions of the primary slip plane and slip direction are shown in Fig. 3. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS The material used was aluminum 99.993 pct pure, according to the manufacturer. The specimens were produced by growth from the melt in a horizontal graphite container. In order to maintain the prescribed geometry of the individual crystals of a multicrystal, a technique described elsewhere was used.' The specimens were grown under a small, positive pressure of helium at a rate of approximately 1 mm per min. annealed in air for 24 hr at 640°C and cooled over a period of several hours to room temperature. All the multi-crystals were rectangular in cross-section, 6 by 18 mm (see Fig. 1) and from 150 to 170 mm long. In each group bicrystals, tricrystals and quadru-crystals were prepared as shown in Figs. 1 and 4.

The transient flow of gases in long pipe lines is a problem of industrial interest. The present discussion deals with the application of the conservation of momentum and material to the transient flow of gas in conduits which are long with respect to their diameter. Solutions of the resulting equations include consideration of variations in friction and specific volume of the fluid as functions of time and position along the conduit. The changes in state along the pipe line are established as a function of time. The methods proposed may be extended to other situations. The flow of compressible fluids under steady conditions' has been considered in detail. Primary emphasis was placed on the development of simple means of taking into account the non-uniform flow' realized in long conduits under such conditions. Binder2 discussed the essential differences between the flow of compressible and uoncompressible fluids. Bonilla" proposed direct methods of solution for equations describing isothermal flow in long pipes. Similar considerations limited to steady flow have been discussed by Ruth.' Palsgrove 5 sugrested a graphical means of solving specific problems relating to the flow of gases in conduits of uniform section. Some of the basic concepts of the flow of a compressible viscous fluid in straight tubes have been described by Kuo.6 Problems of this type require knowledge of the equation of state of the fluid. In many cases it liar been convenient to assume that the fluid follows the relationship ascribed to a perfect gas. The treatment of unsteady flow of compressible fluids is less complete. This state of affairs result* from the fact that the differential equations relating pressure and flow rate with time and position for unsteady flow are nonlinear in character.' Muskat and Wyckoff presented an excellent treatment of the situation in laminar Bow where inertia forces were not of controlling importance. Somewhat earlier Hurst9 discussed the uncteady flow of fluids in petroleum reservoirs. Helhering-ton. These discussions were based upon approximations of the partial differential equations applying to the condititons of flow. The results were descriptive of the physical situation and indirated the effertiveness of large pipe lines as cyclic storage facilities for natural gas. The advent of analog computers" has increased materially the practicality of solving nonlinear partial differential expressions. Several iterative numerical and graphical methods14,15,16 have been developed to solve nonlinear equations. However, it appears that the pair of simultaneous nonlinear partial differential equations involved in problems of this nature are not directly susceptible to solution by presently available analog computer or formal iterative numerical techniques. Nevertheless. graphical analyses afford a means of obtaining data of engineering value without special equipment. MATHEMATICAL CONSIDERATIONS Since the length of the conduit is large in comparison to the cross section in the cases to be considered, it is possible to treat the characteristics of the flow as independent of position in the cross section of the conduit. This possibility follows since the energy- connected with the velocity profile is small compared to that required to overcome the friction associated with its movement throughout the length of the line. Average values of the pressure. velocity. kinetic energy. momentum, and specific volume may he assigned to the fluid at any particular cross section. From a mathematical viewpoint this may be expressed in the following way for velocity: µ = µ(?X)..........(1) The uncertainties introduced by such assumptions usually are negligible when the ratio of length to diameter is greater than the order of 1.000. On this basis a volume element ma!. be considered to occupy the entire cross section of the conduit. Such an element is presented in Fig. 1.

The transient flow of gases in long pipe lines is a problem of industrial interest. The present discussion deals with the application of the conservation of momentum and material to the transient flow of gas in conduits which are long with respect to their diameter. Solutions of the resulting equations include consideration of variations in friction and specific volume of the fluid as functions of time and position along the conduit. The changes in state along the pipe line are established as a function of time. The methods proposed may be extended to other situations. The flow of compressible fluids under steady conditions' has been considered in detail. Primary emphasis was placed on the development of simple means of taking into account the non-uniform flow' realized in long conduits under such conditions. Binder2 discussed the essential differences between the flow of compressible and uoncompressible fluids. Bonilla" proposed direct methods of solution for equations describing isothermal flow in long pipes. Similar considerations limited to steady flow have been discussed by Ruth.' Palsgrove 5 sugrested a graphical means of solving specific problems relating to the flow of gases in conduits of uniform section. Some of the basic concepts of the flow of a compressible viscous fluid in straight tubes have been described by Kuo.6 Problems of this type require knowledge of the equation of state of the fluid. In many cases it liar been convenient to assume that the fluid follows the relationship ascribed to a perfect gas. The treatment of unsteady flow of compressible fluids is less complete. This state of affairs result* from the fact that the differential equations relating pressure and flow rate with time and position for unsteady flow are nonlinear in character.' Muskat and Wyckoff presented an excellent treatment of the situation in laminar Bow where inertia forces were not of controlling importance. R. C. Gifkins (CSIRO)—In this paper evidence is put forward to support the idea of grain boundary shearing in aluminum at 4.2°K and the phenomenon is explained in terms of a low-temperature "equicohesive temperature". It is stated that these findings show that grain boundary shear cannot be ruled out in any situation by temperature arguments alone. We believe, from our own recent study of "apparent grain boundary sliding'' at temperatures below 0.45 Tm, that it can be ruled out on temperature arguments alone.45 Our experiments were made principally with magnesium and a Ms-A1 alloy ("Magnox A12"). Careful examination of offsets of marker lines or steps at grain boundaries produced by deformation at room temperature (-0.3 Tm) showed many of these to result from curvature over narrow zones along the grain boundaries. A significant residuum did, however, appear as a sharp offset or step. It was found that the mean value of this step rose to a small value during the first 0.5 to 1 pct strain and then remained at this level with further strain. Moreover, exactly the same values were obtained (at the same stress) at 75°C instead of 21°C. That is, in this range of temperature the "apparent sliding" was not temperature-sensitive. At 125°C and above there was sliding which increased with strain and which was temperature-dependent. When this temperature-dependent sliding was used to calculate the sliding to be expected at room temperature, this underestimated the "apparent sliding" by a factor of 104. The conclusion drawn is that the "apparent sliding" consists of shear localized in a zone of a width measured perhaps in microns, whereas it seems that true sliding occurs on the boundary surface.46 A model for such localized shear has been developed in general terms, following a similar model of Urie and Wain.47 Other strong evidence for low-temper- ature sliding has been based on the offsets of marker lines consisting of a substructure seen using the electron microscope to resolve these.48 We have repeated this work and found that the effects can be accounted for in terms of cracks in an oxide film which is produced when the substructure is etched up; these cracks form over zones of shear rather than at actual interfaces. However, in aluminum at room temperature (-0.3 Tm) there is no "apparent sliding" which is optically detectable. We suggest that, when the temperature is much lower (and possibly the rate of strain higher, too), as in the experiments of Chin et al., then aluminum behaves like magnesium at room temperature, and a narrow zone of shear develops to accommodate differences in strain across the grain boundary. Such a zone could well give rise to triple-point cracks. It is hoped to investigate these suggestions further. B. Y. Chin, W. F. Hosford, Jr., and W. A. Backofen (authors' reply)—It is interesting to have Dr. Gif-kin's comments, although it is somewhat difficult to reply in detail without the reference containing the work that he describes. Apparently though, he does find a low-temperature temperature-independent sliding that would seem to be related to the observations reported here. Perhaps some of the difficulty has semantic origins, growing out of the distinction between ('true sliding" and "apparent sliding".
