Consolidated Quarries Corp. must conduct operations for an average sales price of $1.25 per ton, about the same price at which stone was sold 25 years ago when the dollar was worth twice what it is now. To maintain success in a competitive business, the company must solve the usual production problems, which will be discussed here in the order they occur in the flowsheet. Most crushed stone quarries must first remove soil and decomposed rock. Although seasons of lower sales sometimes release regular quarry excavating and haulage equipment for this purpose, overburden is often too extensive for this method to be used. In such cases, special equipment must be assigned or the job may be contracted. As many earthmoving contractors have heavy duty specialized equipment well suited to overburden removal, they should be seriously considered before the job is undertaken. Pockets of clay beneath peaks of hard stone sometimes defy mechanized removal. Pick and shovel laborers at this point might be supplanted by more ingenious use of pumps and water or some other mechanical means. Where overburden is extremely heavy or difficult to remove, underground mining must be considered.

In accordance with the usual custom, manuscripts to be presented at the next meeting of the Institute must be in the hands of the, Secretary before July 1, 1917. Manuscripts to be properly distributed in advance of the meeting must be in the hands of the Secretary before June 1, 1917. At the last meeting of the Institute 45 papers were presented, and 42 of them were actively discussed. This experience makes us believe that advance distribution is the best possible means of getting a good discussion of papers and of securing for them the interest of the members of the profession. It will be impossible, however, to give the papers proper distribution if they bare not received before June 1, 1917.

Metal mining in the People's Republic of China has shown great growth during the last three decades. Over 150 new iron ore mines and nonferrous base metal mines have been opened since 1949, althouc.11 most of them of medium and small size. Concurrently, many old mines were enlarged and reconstructed. The production of iron ore has grown from less than 1.5 million tons per year in 1949 to almost 76 million tons in 1978. A corresponding increase in the total annual output in the nonferrous metal mineral industry has also been noted. It is well known that the PRC is very rich in metal mineral resources. The reserves of tungsten, tin, antimony, molybdenum and iron ore are ranked in the top three in the world. Recently, some copper porphyry ore deposits were discovered in Jianxi and Anhui provinces. Some large nickel-copper sulfide deposits were discovered and have been developed in North- West China. Huge iron ore deposits have been found in Liaoning, Hebei and Szechwan provinces. However, the bulk of the iron ores are low grade. The growing metal mineral production has met basic domestic needs since 1949; it has also proven China's big resource potential. Mining methods have also undergone development in the past 30 years. About 80% of the annual output of iron ore comes from open pits, whereas about 58% of nonferrous metal ores come from underground mines. Blasthole open stoping, sublevel caving and induced block caving are widely used in Chinese underground metal mines (table 1). This paper summarizes in detail the planning for and application of these three bulk mining methods in the nonferrous and iron ore mines in China. CLASSIFICATION OF UNDERGROUND MINING METHODS The main principle of the classification of underground mining methods in PRC is ground support in the stoping cycles of the mining blocks or stopes. Table 2 lists this classification. It is essentially the same as that given in the SME Mining Engineering Handbook. Be- cause pillar removal is a secondary mining operation, using a variety of methods, they are not included in this classification. As is the case with most classifications in science and technology, there is no precise division between the classes of mining methods. Because of the rapid development of consolidated filling techniques in the past twenty years, some types of open stoping methods use fill in order to improve the ground conditions for the secondary recovery stage. Thus, these mining methods have features of both methods using no artificial support and those using artificial support. In this classification, this type of mining method is placed in the latter category. The shrinkage stoping method has been employed extensively to mine steeply dipping narrow veins of tungsten and tin in the Jiangxi, Hunan, Guangdong and Guangxi provinces. Shrink- age stoping is placed under the class of mining methods without artificial support be- cause this reflects the nature of the Chinese experience. The function of the broken ore serving to support the footwall and/or hanging wall is limited, because the expectation is for the host rocks to remain unsupported until the stope is drawn empty. APPLICATION OF BULK MINING METHODS Bulk mining methods consist of blasthole open stoping, sublevel caving and block caving. These stoping methods have much in common, such as: bulk ore materials blasted by long holes; higher production rates of stopes or blocks and higher production efficiencies of the whole mining systems.

This paper is presented in the belief that metallurgists and chemists will be interested in the practice of grinding in tube-mills in connection with stamps, especially since the records of working here given extend over a lengthy period of time (since May, 1905). The ore from the Waihi mine—more especially that produced in the upper levels—contains a large proportion of hard, chalce-donic quartz, and the gold exists in an exceedingly fine state, conditions which necessitate very fine crushing in order to obtain a high extraction of the precious metal. Before the introduction of tube-mills at the 90-stamp Waihi mill, it was found necessary to stamp through 40-mesh (1,600 holes per sq. in.) woven wire-screens, having a fairly high discharge. The pulp then graded : Per Cent. Per Cent. Although the extraction on this pulp was: gold, from 88 to 90 per cent., and silver, from 74 to 78 per cent., it was recognized that finer grinding of the sands would prove beneficial, provided a machine could be found to do this work economically. Various grinding-mills and pans were tried, but without satisfactory results, the particles of sand being so hard that the capacity of any of the machines was too small to be economical. THE purpose of this discussion is to outline briefly the practices commonly followed in this country for the melting and refining of magnesium and its alloys. The processes used for the various forms of primary magnesium, as far as there are differences in the physical shape or behavior, will be discussed. The refining of general fine scrap or secondary magnesium was presented in an earlier paper.1 Inasmuch as the use of fluxes is an essential part of all the melting and refining processes, the principal aim of this paper will be to deal with these in sufficient detail to point out their unique characteristics, in order to make their use more effective. TYPES OF MELTING PRACTICE All melting and refining processes for magnesium and its alloys require the use of fluxes. These fluxes have a magnesium chloride base and other halide salts or oxides are added to give a density or behavior exactly suited to the particular melting practice. The successful handling of magnesium depends upon the proper use of the correct fluxes. There are four general methods of melting, summarized in the following paragraphs and treated in more detail in the section on Melting and Refining. Open-pot Method The open-pot method makes use of No. 230 flux.* The flux provides protection during melting and a molten pool of flux into which the solid magnesium melts. It is stirred through the molten metal bath and agglomerates oxide or similar foreign bodies; then on quiet standing separates away, leaving the refined metal ball floating in an encircling layer of molten flux. It forms only a thin fluid film over the surface of the molten metal, which may be parted for hand-ladling processes and tends to cover the metal again after the ladle is removed. A very light dusting of the pot surface with fresh flux immediately after the ladle is removed is usually desirable. The open-pot method is used generally in the following processes: (I) alloying and secondary smelting in the production of ingot, (2) in sand foundries for premelting and to a smaller extent for the production of small castings requiring hand ladling, (3) in permanent-mold founding for premelting and also direct ladling to castings, (4) for continuous methods of preparing metal in the production of billets or ingots from which wrought products are fabricated, (5) in general scrap recovery. Do not write until you have something to say. Think first; then write. In order to be understood, you must know what you wish to say. Clear writing is the consequence of clear thinking. Therefore consider your subject well before you begin to write; ruminate on it; marshal the salient facts in your mind; saturate yourself with the ideas you wish to express and with cognate ideas; then express yourself deliberately. If you are bubbling over with your subject the words will come, but you might as well expect to sail without a breeze as hope to give life to words without the living thought. Here I may advert to the fact that among the uneducated it is a common expectation to acquire the knack of writing without taking the trouble to study the art of literature. I overheard a woman in a suburban train remark to her neighbor: "I'd like to be able to write well without stopping to think about it". She was one of many that would like to do a thing well without the trouble of thinking; but it cannot be done in respect of anything to which thought is essential. The possession of a good voice does not justify a person in expecting to sing successfully to a large audience; before singing in public one has to master the technique of singing; one has to learn first how to breathe properly, how to enunciate, and many other things. The successful singer is an artist, not a megaphone. Most of us would regard a man or a woman without any training in the art of singing as a fool or an impostor if he or she were to give a public concert, yet we do not recognize the equal foolishness and imposture of persons that write books before they have studied the technique of writing. ALTHOUGH arsenic has a very high vapor pressure and vacuum distillation appears to be a likely method for its removal from lead, the published literature contains virtually no information concerning the vacuum removal of arsenic from lead. Caldwell, Spendlove, and St. Claire1 mention arsenic in their investigation of the removal of volatile metals from lead by vacuum distillation. They do not, however, give any data for arsenic removal or refer to any actual experimental work involving arsenic dissolved in lead. Moriyama, Kozuka, and Miura2 have determined the activity of arsenic in dilute As-Pb alloys in the temperature range from 450" to 600°C using a closed galvanic cell. They found that the activities of both arsenic and lead showed a positive deviation from ideality at 600°C. In view of the lack of experimental data regarding the vaporization of arsenic from As-Pb alloys, a limited vapor pressure study was made on liquid alloys containing from 0.5 to 3.3 wt pct As in lead at 703°C. The pressure of As4(v) above the alloys studied was determined from weight-loss data collected by means of the inert-gas saturation method. The experimental apparatus and procedure used were similar to that discussed by Alcock and Hooper9 with modifications as described by the authors., The technique involved was one of passing a known volume of inert gas over the alloy to be studied in a known amount of time and determining the loss in weight of the sample. Because of the low vapor pressure of lead at 703"C, the observed weight loss could be attributed solely to the vaporization of arsenic as the tetratomic molecule AS43 Measurements of the apparent vapor pressure were repeated at different inert-gas flow rates until from three to five values were obtained which were independent of inert-gas flow rate. This value of the apparent vapor pressure was taken to be the equilibrium vapor pressure of the alloy under consideration. The vapor pressures measured in this investigation have been converted to the activities of arsenic in As-Pb alloys, Table I, by use of the data compiled by Elliott and Gleiser5 for the vapor pressure of pure arsenic. The standard state for arsenic was chosen as the pure, hypothetical, supercooled liquid. The activity of arsenic was calculated from the fourth root of the ratio PAs,/PAS,. The low magnitude of the vapor pressures given in Table I explains the difficulty en- countered by earlier workers in successfully vacuum distilling arsenic from very dilute As-Pb alloys. The data shown in Fig. 1 indicate that the As-Pb system behaves ideally. The apparent outlier represented by the alloy containing 1.43 mol pct As is a result of the fact that the pressure of As, above the alloy was barely detectable by the experimental procedure used in this investigation. Because of this, the apparent vapor pressure determined for this alloy could be in considerable error. Moriyama, Kozuka, and ~iura' have reported that arsenic shows a positive deviation from ideality in dilute solution in lead. However, details of their results have not been made available. (San Francisco Meeting, September, 1915) THE desirability of employing the centigrade scale for the measurement of temperatures is becoming more and more recognized in this country, particularly in view of the fact that this scale is used almost exclusively in technical papers and publications-exclusively in those published in French or German. There are, however, a large number of factories and laboratories which still employ the Fahrenheit scale. It therefore frequently becomes necessary to convert one into the other and the accompanying chart (Fig. 1) has been found very convenient for this purpose.

The relation between permeability and the size parameters of unconsolidated sand is approached by considering sands as logarithmic frequency distributions having the basic parameters mean size and standard deviation. Sieve separates were mixed in accordance with the normal logarithmic probability law, so that the mean and standard deviation could be varied at will. Experiments were conducted in which one parameter was kept fixed and the other varied; in this manner the dependence of permeability on the individual parameters was evaluated. It was found that permeability can he expressed as the product of a power function of the mean size and an exponential function of the standard deviation. Earlier studies of the effect of size of particles on the permeability of uncon-solidated sand have shown that the permeability varies with the square of some average diameter. This was first pointed out by Hazenl in 1892 and verified by Slichter2 in 1898. Hazen's mean size was defined as the 10 percentile of the cumulative curve (i.e., size that is smaller than 90 pel cent of the distribution and larger than 10 per cent). Slichter's effective size, on the other hand, was found by Wilsey3,4 to agree with the 31 percentile. Fair and Hatch6 found that the geometric mean size of sieve separates yielded the same power function; Hulbert and Feben6 found that the permeability of sieve separates varied as the 1.89 power of the median diameter (i.e., the size associated with the 50 percentile of the cumulative curve). Relatively few studies included the effect of the "sorting" of the sediment on the permeability. It was recognized that the nature of the size distribution, in terms of the spread of the particles about the mean, affects the permeability, but no systematic investigations of this effect are known to the writers. Cloud7 demonstrated that the effect of the grain-size distribution on permeability is definitely measurable. In the present paper the authors investigate this relation analytically, and show that the effects of the size parameters on permeability may be predicted for at least a restricted set of conditions. Properties OF Sediments Recent investigations have shown that essentially all the geologically important characteristics of sediments may be expressed in terms of six measurable quanti-tities possessed by each clastic sedimentary particle. These attributes are: (I) size, (2) shape (sphericity), (3) roundness (angularity) , (4) mineralogical composition (density), (5) surface texture, (6) orientation. Each of these characteristics may be defined in several manners. Size may be expressed in terms of sieve mesh, settling velocity, volume, etc. Sphericity is a shape concept introduced by Wadell;8 it is essentially a measure of the ratio of the surface area of an equivalent sphere to the surface area of the particle. PECIMEN preparation for electron metallography involves several steps, such as polishing, etching, replicating, mounting, and shadowing. Although each step must be done with care, the operation requiring the utmost attention is etching. Proper etching is important because the relief pattern developed on the surface of the specimen by the etchant, and reproduced as minute differences in thickness of the replica, determines entirely the amount of detail seen in the final micrograph. The characteristic colored stains, sometimes used in light metallography to simplify identification of certain microconstituents, cannot be tolerated because there is danger of introducing artifacts in the replicating operation. It is also quite difficult to remove plastic replicas from stained specimens. A suitable etchant for electron metallography must, therefore, in all cases exhibit a preferential attack upon each of the microconstituents present sufficient to result in a difference in surface elevation. When only two microconstituents are present, it is not too difficult to find a suitable etchant since their physical or chemical properties are generally sufficiently different to result in a marked difference in attack by the etchant. For example, picral (a saturated solution of picric acid in methanol used as an immersion etch) is a satisfactory etchant for the specimen shown in Fig. 1 consisting of iron carbide particles embedded in a ferrite matrix.'

Feeders must be considered an integral part of the over-all bin and feeder system. Improper design of either one of these parts will affect the performance of the whole system. Feeder load, material properties, feed rate, physical layout, and environment as well as first cost determine the selection of feeder type. This paper provides a new method of calculating feeder loads with some experimental data as verification. General design criteria for belt and apron feeder, rotary table and plow feeders are discussed and a special section is devoted to vibratory feeders. Feeders are used to provide a means of control for the withdrawal of bulk materials from storage units such as bins, bunkers, silos and hoppers. This control function can only be performed properly as long as the bulk materials flow by gravity to the feeder in a uniform and uninterrupted fashion. During the past few years various papers have been written and presented on feeders and their application.1-9 This paper will be confined to some specific bin-feeder design criteria such as feeder load and power requirements. Special attention is given to the basic design criteria for vibratory feeders. HOPPER AND BIN DESIGN Feeders must be considered an integral part of the over-all bin and feeder system. Improper design of either one of these parts will affect the performance of the whole system. A lot of effort has been devoted in the past decade to the development of functional design criteria for hoppers and bins.1,10 The integrated concept of bin and feeder design requires quantitative analysis of the bulk material characteristics before the design and the selection of components can be attempted. The design of a feeder system must begin with the proper dimensioning of the hopper outlet to prevent arching or ratholing. The hopper opening should be large enough to allow passage of the bulk solid at the required maximum discharge rate." A feeder can only throttle the flow. FEEDER LOAD DETERMINATION Over the past ten years, there have been various attempts to determine the exact load or pressure on feeders mounted directly under hopper openings. THE rate of flotation of solid particles determines the percentage recovery of these particles which can be obtained during a given time interval. It is an established fact that the recovery is greatest in the fine sand size range and falls off on either side of this size range. It is also a fact that the history of the development of concentrating devices has been marked by a desire to recover the small particles: tables were developed to treat material too fine to recover in jigs; flotation recovers material too fine to be recovered on tables. As our ores become more complex and require finer grinding, a greater proportion is in the slow-floating size range. It is therefore of economic importance that the effect of size of particle upon rate of flotation be studied. Many studies have been made along this line. The present investigation attempts to quantify the rate of flotation by means of a rate equation, and then compares the effect of size upon the rate of flotation. It was found that the flotation rate constant increases with increase in diameter of particle in the size range smaller than the optimum size particle. The flotation rate constant decreases with an increase in diameter of particle in the size range coarser than the optimum size particle. This suggested two different actions taking place, and these are discussed. Suggestions for further work in order to improve the flotation rate of both fine and coarse particles are made. The usual method of expressing rate is to plot cumulative percent recovery vs time. If we knew the equation of this kind of curve we could replot it as a straight line, and the slope of the line would be an index of the magnitude of the flotation rate. It is easier to compare straight lines than curves. The basis used for obtaining the equation of the recovery vs time curve is the law of mass action. This law states that the "rate of a chemical reaction is proportional to the `active masses' of the reacting substances present at any given time." This, of course, implies a constant temperature. We can modify this for our use by using the term flotation reaction instead of chemical reaction and the term floatable particle instead of active masses. [ ] where C denotes concentration of particles, t denotes time, k denotes a proportionality constant. If the exponent of C is 1, then we have a first order rate reaction. If the exponent of C is 2, then we have a second order rate reaction. For a first order rate reaction, we obtain, after integration, [ ] where k is again a proportionality constant and has the dimension of the reciprocal of time. C, is the original concentration or weight or percentage of floatable particles. C, is the concentration or weight or percentage of floatable particles remaining in the flotation cell after time t. If all particles of the mineral to be floated were capable of floating we could take C, as 100 and C, would be 100 - R, where R is the cumulative percentage recovery of mineral at time t. But it is not usual for all of the particles to be capable of floating, because of surface oxidation, etc. Therefore, we must introduce a factor x which is the percentage of unfloatable mineral. Hence the first order equation is [ ] It has been proposed by various workers1-3 that this equation describes the flotation rate. More recently N. Arbiter4 states that a second order rate equation fits the recovery vs time curve more closely than does a first order rate equation. Morris' has discussed the evidence presented for this statement. The semi-annual meeting of the Montana Section was held at the Silver Bow Club, Butte, Montana, on Friday, Nov. 16, at 8 p. m.; this was a postponement of the regular October meeting because of conflict in date with the St. Louis meeting of the Institute. An informal dinner was served to 68 members and guests. After dinner, Chairman W. C. Siderfin called the meeting to order. The minutes of the annual meeting, of Feb. 2, 1917, and the special meeting of May 21, 1917, were read and approved. C. W. Goodale led the discussion with "Notes on the St. Louis Meeting." He was followed by J. H. Warner who spoke on " The Joplin and Miami Districts," and by J. L: Bruce, Alexander Leggatt, N. B. Braly, and E. B. Norris presented a paper on "Fire Proofing of Mine Shafts by the Anaconda Copper Mining Co." This resulted in interesting discussion by C. L. Berrien, C. E. Nighman, N. B. Braly, W. B. Daly, B. H. Dunshee, and J. J. Carrigan. C. L. Berrien and C. E. Nighman presented their papers on "Fire Extinction by Hydraulic Filling." In view of the late hour, discussion was waived. The executive committee, by unanimous consent, decided to request written discussion of the above papers to be presented at the next meeting, in February. B. B. Thayer spoke interestingly on the work of the Naval Consulting Board, and referred to the arsenic situation. Spencer Miller, also a, member of the Naval Consulting Board, entertained the-meeting with a vivid description of the method of "Coaling Battleships at Sea." Robert Sticht of Tasmania, in a short talk, spoke feelingly of his relations with the United States. At a late hour adjournment ended a most successful and interesting meeting. E. B. INTRODUCTION A greater understanding is required about the factors which control tunneling operations if we are to meet the expected demand for tunnels. Much of the needed information can best be achieved by the proper use of instrumentation and advanced engineering concepts. Tunnel measurements and their analysis may prove to be the key which will give the insight necessary to understand the relationship of rock, tunnel supports, and linings. There are three main areas which can be improved through the use of tunnel instrumentation. First, and of prime importance, is safety for men and the project. When unstable conditions occur, sets become distorted. Even without measurements, it is sometimes possible to tell when trouble is approaching. In effect, the set acts as a load cell. Distortions in the set indicate reinforcements may be required to maintain stability. Additional sets or rock bolts, if they are placed soon enough, may provide this stability. However, when large rock displacements occur in short periods of time, it could be too late. Figure 1 is an example of the difficulties encountered in stopping moving rock. To stop the movement and possible failure, large props were placed above the spring line and the massive concrete gravity buttress was constructed along the legs. Rock bolts from the buttress deep into the rock were also used in an attempt to stabilize the rock mass. However, this work is for a highway tunnel and eventually these props and buttresses must be removed.

The Phelps Dodge Corp. Lavender pit is located in the Bisbee mining district near the town of Lowell, Ariz. A quartz monzonite porphyry exists as an intrusive stock and was the source of mineralization for the limestone replacement orebodies being mined by underground methods. Leaching of the upper portion of the stock, and precipitation of the copper as chalcocite on the finely dispersed un- oxidized pyrite in the monzonite porphyry, formed a low grade ore zone below a leached capping varying from 50 to 300 ft thick. Churn drilling starting in 1916 and supplemental churn drilling begun early in 1950 indicated a mineable area about 3100 ft long by 2400 ft wide. In general drilling was on 100-ft centers. The pit was planned with 50-ft benches and wall slopes varying from 1 to 1 to a flatter slope of 1 1/3 to 1 dependent on the character of the ground. Materials within the pit limits, using a 0.6 pct minimum grade cutoff, were estimated at 41 million tons of 1.14 pct copper ore, 31 million tons of low grade sulfides suitable for leaching with an average grade of 0.42 pct, and 70 million tons of waste.

For more than a decade the use of the metallographic microscope, by mining geologists, for examining ores has been increasing and conclusions founded upon examinations made by it are found in several recent professional papers of the United States Geological Survey as well as in our technical publications. But most mining men have been slow to realize the positive value of this instrument in their daily work. The reason for this condition is not hard to find. The varied applications, the simplicity of preparation, and the methods of studying a polished section of ore have not been widely published. Papers in technical periodicals have been profusely illustrated by photographs of such sections, special refined methods of procedure for laboratory work have been described, and complete and detailed schemes of identifying the ore minerals have been published in book form.1 But simple and easily applied directions and, what, is more important, light, compact, and inexpensive equipment have not been available. The simplest microscope obtainable is intended for laboratory use and is much too bulky for the average field equipment; at present it costs about one hundred dollars for the instrument alone. Methods previously described for polishing specimens have necessitated electrically driven lap wheels, which are found only in permanent installations. It is small wonder that the examining mining engineer, field geologist, resident engineers, and mill men have looked upon the subject as being too involved for the field and have assigned it to the laboratory investigator. The writer has been interested in this question for some time from the viewpoint of his own work. Being handicapped by the difficulties enumerated, he has designed an outfit that has proved very useful. It is described here and its. applications shown in the hope that it may be of equal value to others, and that a start will be made toward popularizing
