In a paper, " A Study of the Elimination of Impurities from Copper-Mattes, etc.," presented to the Institute at the Atlantic City meeting, February, 1898, I gave certain figures which I called the relative slaggability in refining copper. In that paper* will be found the following pertaining to this subject: Relative Slaggability in Refining Converter-Copper. Cu. Pb. Bi. Sb. As. Se, Te. 1 129.5 1.13 7.30 5.22 0.81 and Relative Slaggability in Refining Electrolytic Copper. Cu. Pb. Sb. As. 1 41 9.97 7.13 Since there is a, possibility of misinterpretation of the above values, the following supplementary information may seem justified in explanation. As the contents of impurities in the unrefined or crude copper were unknown, the contents of the refined copper were substituted therefor, merely in order to obtain the two series of figures for comparison. These figures are higher than they would be had I been able to take the correct ones for the unrefined copper. The high figure, 129.5, for lead, in the case of converter-copper, means simply that more lead was slagged from the crude copper than remained in the refined copper; or, in definite values, that to 1 per cent. of copper slagged, the ratio of the lead gone into the slag and the lead remaining in the refined copper is 129.5 : 100. It is possible to approximate the true slaggability much more closely by adding the quantities of impurities in the refined copper to those in the slag, thus obtaining values for the crude copper in which the amounts volatilized are ignored (the latter

NO one who has visited our Western mining districts, and studied the economical part of the beneficiation of the ores occurring all over that vast extent of country, can underrate the high importance of the above subject. By far the larger number of the districts which contain smelting ores, i. e., argentiferous and auriferous lead, or copper ores, are situated in the Great Basin, that great plateau between the Rocky Mountains on the east, and the Sierra Nevada on the west, almost the whole of which is comprised at present in the boundaries of Nevada, Utah, and part of Arizona. This region is essentially a barren country. The extreme dryness of the atmosphere permits but a scanty vegetation in the plains; and even in the detached mountain-chains running through it-generally from N. to S., or from N. W. to S. E.-there are no trees found except dwarfed pines and mahogany, at the head of sheltered ravines, and a few cottonwoods and willows, which fringe the insignificant streams, before the water sinks in the arid plains. Nearly all the mountain-chains in this region are rich in silver ores. That class of these ores which is adapted to amalgamation, and rich in silver, has been worked with profit for more than ten years. But before the advent of the transcontinental railways, mining was restricted to these ores alone, and the consumption f fuel could be met with the scanty supply of forest trees in the immediate vicinity of the mining districts. Since, however, the Union and Central Pacific Railroads have brought the Great Basin nearer to the commercial centres of the East and the Pacific coast, thus reducing the expenses of freight and labor materially, other silver deposits, containing poorer ores in greater abundance, have been rapidly taken

The subject article appears in the February, 1978, edition of Mining Engineering, and on page 190 carries the statement, "As most operators know, in a Water-Only cyclone, ability to adjust the vortex finder is quite important due to the sensitivity of this type of operations to variance in feed conditions and having to take them apart to make this adjustment is always a nuisance." Our experience as a manufacturer and supplier of Water Only cyclones does not agree with the above statement, and we offer the following brief discussion. Our company finds that the sensitivity of the Water-Only cyclone is a function of the fineness of the coal being washed, with the sensitivity to vortex finder length being greatest for coals coarser than 3/4-in. and virtually insensitive to raw coal finer than 1 mm. For coals finer than 1 mm, we find that we can use the shortest standard vortex finder in either our 10- or 15- in. Water Only cyclone without exception. For coals 5/8-in. x 1 mm ceramic vortex finders of fixed length have been satisfactory in all cases following an initial testing period in which the length was determined. Coals coarser that 5/8-in. are more sensitive to the vortex finder length, and two installations handling coals coarser than 1-in. continued to experiment with vortex finders of various lengths long after the initial startup period. For coals of all sizes, final adjustment of product quality has been achieved by determining the optimum size of apex orifice, which is accessible and readily changed, if necessary. Comments above assume no unusual change in the coal being washed or the required quality of clean coal.

Although every mill-man of even limited experience in the amalgamation of gold-ores is probably aware that copper plates will in time become coated by the accumulation of gold-amalgam, it may be that many do not know to what extent this accumulation occurs in the treatment of ores dissimilar to those with which they are familiar, and under conditions foreign to those with which they have to contend in any given locality. The writer, therefore, feels relieved from the necessity of offering an apology for dealing with such an elementary subject, believing that certain facts in reference thereto, which have recently come under his personal observation, will be interesting to many, and possibly instructive to some persons engaged in the amalgamation of gold-ores. The facts hereinafter stated were observed in the 50-stamp "combination"-mill, owned by the Montana Mining Company, Limited, of England, operating the Drum Lummon mine, situated at Marysville, Montana. The material treated in this mill consists of quartz and ores of somewhat variable character, containing gold and silver in native form, as well as in chemical union with the sulphides of iron and copper. There is also present a little lead, some arsenic and antimony, and a little zinc. The last fair minerals, however, are of irregular occurrence, and but sparingly distributed throughout the ore, and yield only a trace in the analysis of the average material in this mill. The free gold, which is in a condition of fine division, and rarely visible to the naked eye, carries silver as an alloy; and the native silver, which is only occasionally observed, is present in the richer ores in wireand in leaf-form. Of the two precious metals, the ore worked during the past three years and ten months, the period under review, contained about 1/2-ounce of gold, and from 7 to 12 ounces of silver, per ton of 2000 pounds.

Undisturbed sampling of shale has always been difficult. As pert of a comprehensive subsurface investigation for a nuclear power plant in northwestern Illinois, the Maquoketa shale, which contains seams of argillaceous dolomite, was sampled using different coring techniques. Since the Maquoketa shale is extremely fissile, careful sampling preservation by both lateral and vertical confining was utilized. The samples were tested to determine both static and dynamic properties. A relationship between void ratio and compression index, swell index, and swell pressure ratio was established. Correlation was found between the dynamic properties and both undrained shear strength and confining stress. Based on the results of the sampling and testing programs, recommendations for sampling and sample preservation techniques are given. INTRODUCTION Undisturbed sampling and preservation of samples of weathered, fiasile shale is often a very difficult task. The often erratically varying degree of weathering with depth complicates sampling and makes reproducibility of testing results difficult. Therefore, the testing of weak, weathered rock very often yields a wide variety of test results with large data scatter. The reproducibility of teat results usually associated with water-deposited soils is seldom, if ever, obtained. The testing and sampling program described in this paper was part of a comprehensive subsurface investigation for a nuclear power plant in northwestern Illinois. The sampling, preservation and testing program of shale samples taken from the Maquoketa shale are described, and, in particular, the different sampling techniques and sample preservation procedures are evaluated with respect to their effectiveness. The samples obtained by these procedures were subjected to a comprehensive testing program, including both static and dynamic testing in order to provide input for soil-structure interaction analysis. GEOLOGY The Maquoketa Shale Group is of Ordovician age and is part of the Cincinnatian Series. The area where the shale samples were taken was in a broad sea far from sources of clastic sediments during most of Ordovician time. However, during Cincinnatian time when large deltas in the Appalachian region were being formed, clastic sediments from the east dominated the sedimentation ii. Illinois, resulting in formation of the shale and dolomite shales of the Maquoketa Shale Group (Willman et al., 1975). The geologic unit sampled consists of a greenish gray to gray silty shale containing numerous 1- to 12-inch (2.5- to 30.5-cm) thick interbeds of argillaceous dolomite. Allocation of allowed production in a prorated field by the use of bottom-hole pressures is a method which is sound in theory. Thus far it has had limited application because the experience in correlating bottom-hole pressures with the depletion of wells or fields is not sufficient to interpret all the pressure changes. With additional data and more general knowledge of bottom-hole pressures their use in proration will probably become common. Bottom-hole pressure is the pressure at or near the bottom of a well. It is usually determined at the face of the producing horizon. Bottom-hole pressure measured while the well is producing, may be called the bottom-hole producing pressure or bottom-hole flowing pressure. If the well has been shut in or shut down long enough for the pressure in the producing horizon within the drainage area of the well to equalize, it may be called the reservoir pressure. The allowable production from a prorated field may be allocated to the individual wells or leases by three methods: 1. Bottom-hole producing or flowing pressures. (a) The potential capacity of a well to produce. (b) A uniform differential pressure while producing at the allowed rate. 2. Reservoir pressures. 3. A combination of bottom-hole producing pressures and reservoir pressures. In most prorated fields the allowed production is allocated to the individual wells or leases in proportion to their individual potentials. This method is based on the theory that there is a direct relationship between the permeability and the porosity of the reservoir. More directly stated it means that there is a direct relationship between the amount of oil in the reservoir and the rate at which it will move through the reservoir. While in general this relationship is true, it may vary considerably in different wells. Furthermore, in many wells the capacity of the reservoir to deliver oil to the well is greater than the capacity of the flow string to deliver oil to the surface. It is especially true where the potential is determined by flowing through tubing or by pumping.

A formulation is given and a general analytical solution is presented for the problem of spherical phase growth in multicomponent systems. The results are valid for describing the rate of bubble growth in the absence of translational motion and, therefore, should be relevant to heterogeneous nucleation processes. Typical worked examples are given, which include bubble growth due to the simultaneous diffusion of hydrogen and nitrogen in molten steel, and the growth of CO bubbles in steel, due to the reaction: C + 0 = CO. The calculations predict that the presence of additional components would enhance the growth rate and also increase the absolute rate at which the individual components are transferred into the bubble. These findings should be relevant to degassing processes. THE problem of spherical bubble growth in the absence of translational motion is appropriate to the description of the heterogeneous nucleation and subsequent growth of gas bubbles while attached to a solid surface. Such problems are of considerable practical relevance to various vacuum degassing and steelmaking processes where bubble nucleation and subsequent growth play an important part in the overall reaction mechanism. A definitive formulation of spherical phase growth has been given in the now classical paper by Scriven1 and the analogous problem for solid phase growth has been discussed by Horvay,2 furthermore a thorough review of the relevant literature has also become available.3 All this previous work was concerned with one component or binary systems. The purpose of this paper is to show that the technique developed by Scriven may be generalized to alow the consideration of multicomponent systems. The results of this generalization would be particularly relevant, as gas bubble nucleation in the metallurgical systems previously mentioned frequently involves the simultaneous diffusion of several components. In the following a general formulation is given and typical worked examples are presented. FORMULATION Consider the growth of a spherical gas bubble due to diffusion in a quiescent liquid of infinite extent, as sketched in Fig. 1. The formulation of such problems requires the statement of the following conservation equations relating to the liquid phase: Equation of continuity Equation of motion Conservation of the diffusing species—Diffusion Equation. The following assumptions are made: a) The fluid is incompressible, quiescent, and of infinite extent b) The bubble is stationary, i.e., it undergoes no translational motion c) Spherical symmetry is observed throughout d) The mass diffusivity is constant e) Chemical equilibrium exists at the surface of the bubble, and any reactions occurring there are fast compared to the diffusion process f) Inertia and surface tension effects are neglected. Equations derived on the basis of these assumptions by previous investigators were found to provide a reasonable representation of bubble growth while attached to a surface in organic and aqueous systems4,5 For gas bubble growth in molten metal systems assumptions a) to d) chould hold reasonably well. The exclusion of chemical kinetics as a possible rate limiting step may not be universally valid, but should hold for many systems operating at high temperatures. The effect of hydrodynamic inertia may be neglected for moderate growth rates; finally, the assumption neglecting the effect of interfacial tension on the bubble growth was made for the sake of mathematical convenience; its inclusion would have required the use of quite cumbersome numerical techniques. While surface tension effects could be appreciable on the initial values of the overall growth rate, especially at low absolute pressures and in case of small bubbles, they are not thought to modify the relative effects present in multicomponent systems, the study of which is the objective of this paper. The basic research for this study was conducted by Battelle's Columbus Laboratories in 1974. The high-sulfur content of coal threatens to erode its competitive position in the future. The impact of sulfur removal on final costs of eastern interior coal lies at the very heart of this market analysis. An extensive market survey was conducted that considered both traditional coal markets as well as anticipated future markets. Competition for coal from this province considers low-sulfur Western coal, nu- clear power, international oil and coal trade, as well as Appalachian coal producers. Based on projections of future energy consumption under several scenarios, a comprehensive market forecast for eastern interior coal was made to 2040. The study upon which this paper is based was completed by Battelle's Columbus Laboratories for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1974. It is but part of an overall effort by the Corps to evaluate the costs and benefits to the nation of waterway improvements. This study is primarily concerned with future coal markets for production from those counties near the Wabash River in the heart of the Eastern Interior Province. An objective here is to consider a most pessimistic energy (and hence, coal) demand for planning purposes.

ANALYTICAL calculations have been carried out on the effect of casing perforations on the productivity of wells, and formulas have been derived for general types of perforation patterns. The numerical calculations, however, show that the resultant well productivity is essentially independent of the perforation pattern, but is determined mainly by the total perforation density. Thus, for example, for a density of three perforations per foot of casing, the well productivity will be cut to one third of that of the uncased well for a perforation radius of 1/3 in., and to approximately one half for a perforation radius of 1/4 in,, regardless of the detailed manner in which the perforations are distributed over the casing surface. The analytical theory is also extended to include wells completed with slotted liners. It is shown that the reduction in productivity due to such liners will be relatively small as compared with that due to perforated casings.

The two volumes published for the Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund are also represented by many items in the index. The necrology, which has appeared in the YEAR BOOK for two years past, will be pub¬lished in the. DIRECTORY, in the spring of 1936. Four volumes, 114 through 117, of the TRANSACTIONS are 1935 publications,-the subjects being, in the order named, Petroleum Development and Technology, Mining Geology, Iron and Steel, Founding and Metallography of Nonferrous Metals (Institute of Metals Division). The Mine Plant volume, which was authorized for publication by the Rocky Mountain Fund, and which was offered as an alternative to a TRANSACTIONS volume, was unavoidably delayed. It will, however, be published as a 1935 volume, and will be distributed as early as possible in 1936. The sixth volume in the A.I.M.E. Series, published under the auspices of the Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund, is Coal through the Ages, by. Howard N. Eavenson; the seventh, Modern Uses of Nonferrous Metals,. which has twenty-two authors and was edited by Dr. C. H. Mathewson. Also, it was necessary in 1935 to have a second printing of the first Rocky Mountain Fund volumes, published in 1933-The Porphyry Coppers, and .Ore Deposits of the Western States (Lindgren Volume). The papers for the Iron and Steel and Institute of Metals Divisions have been issued as TECHNICAL PUBLICATIONS distributed under the binding Of METALS TECHNOLOGY in the months of January, February, April, June, August, September, October, December. This plan of distribution will be continued in 1936 for these two groups.

THE important literature concerning zirconium in magnesium-base alloys is predominantly contained in patent references. Sauerwald, Eisenreich, and Holub1-4 discovered the profound grain-refining influence of small amounts of zirconium on cast magnesium and the attendant increases in strength, and ductility. They extended their work to reveal that limited amounts of certain other elements, including zinc, could be added for further improvement in strength and hardness. British. Patent 5111376 relates to the parent discoveries of Sauerwald, Eisen¬reich, and Holub. All of these references deal primarily with casting characteristics and properties in the cast state. Minor mention is made of desirable tensile strength, ductility, and toughness of wrought Mg-Zr alloys* modified by one or more additional elements. No extensive reference in the literature" has been found to the particular characteristics of wrought Mg-Zn-Zr alloys, with which the present paper is concerned. - The work to be discussed represents essentially an extrusion study of the Mg-Zn-Zr alloys and indicates that this system is highly interesting in the wrought state both academically and commercially. Accordingly, an important aim of this paper is to describe the hot-workability, tension and compression properties, metal¬lography, and toughness of these alloys. Compositional variations are limited to the ranges o to 7 per cent Zn and o to I per cent Zr. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Alloying and Casting Alloying ingredients were cell mag¬nesium, commercial zinc (intermediate grade), and a chloride salt containing approximately 50 per cent ZrCl2 and 50 per cent alkali chlorides. This salt is produced by Titanium Alloy Manu¬facturing Company. Melting, alloying, and pouring procedure essentially followed the crucible process as described by Nelson.6 The magnesium was melted using Dow No. 310 flux, and the temperature raised to 1350° to 1400°F for the alloying operations. After alloying of the zinc, the zirconium containing salt was added in small portions with vigorous stirring. This is an adaptation of the method described in British Patent 533264.7 The alloying efficiency of zir¬conium was approximately 30 per cent. During the alloying of zirconium, fluorspar was added in amount required as a flux¬inspissating agent. Next the melt was refined with Dow No. 310 flux and held quietly for 15 min. As a part of a symposium on the relations of structure to ore deposi-tion, in February 1938, the writer presented some tentative opinions derived from his experience with a number of important lead-zinc replace-ment deposits. These ideas were set forth, as a basis for discussion and a stimulus to further inquiry, in a mimeographed leaflet that read as follows: Intimate acquaintance with a number of lead and zinc deposits in metamorphosed limestones seems to indicate the existence of certain common features from which can be established some general principles governing the localization of ore in this type of formation. It is suspected that these principles can be applied, with modifica-tions, to mineralization in unmetamorphosed limestone. In metamorphosed forma-tions, some observed rules are as follows: 1. Bands or masses of pure limestone are very resistant to replacement by ore solutions, and are likely either to contain no ore or to resist replacement until near the end of mineralization. The reason for this apparently is physical, not chemical, since microscopic data indicate that when ore is deposited by far the greater part of it substitutes for carbonate. The chief factor is believed to be a lack of porosity in massive limestone that has undergone flowage and recrystallization. 2. Masses of intensely siliceous or silicated rock are likewise unfavorable ore receptacles. This seems to be accounted for by two factors: (a) chemical unsuit-ability or resistance to replacement, and (b) physical resistance to small-scale brecci-ation, which might facilitate the opening of effective channelways for solutions. Some low-grade ore may occur, however, and also sporadic fracture fillings. 3. The optimum condition for ore reception appears to be found in bands or areas containing carbonate and silicates (or quartz) intimately mingled in something like equal proportions. In this situation movement is likely to result in mixed flowage and fracture, producing a fine-textured porosity that admits solutions freely and provides access to an abundance of replaceable carbonate. Cleavage cracks in some minerals such as diopside are believed to facilitate the penetration of solutions. 4. Certain minerals or assemblages are regarded as favorable impurities in a lime-stone and others as unfavorable. Original quartz, and subsequently developed diopside, and perhaps garnet, are typical favorable pre-ore gangue; in general rather equidimensional, brittle minerals. Tremolite, biotite, and probably wollastonite, are typical unfavorable pre-ore gangue; in general highly elongated and somewhat flexible minerals likely to develop under strong shearing stresses. 5. Tentative opinion is that the ratio of lime and magnesia in a limestone-is of little or no importance.

Because of the broad scope of my topic I will discuss my subject from the point of view of a present status of the metallic materials that are used in structures and will dwell primarily on those structures related to high- performance aerospace systems. Thus, I can best portray the status of these structural materials as related to existing transportation systems, delineating some of the highlights of alloy development, fabrication, and properties obtained. I shall point out what are, in my opinion, the needed solutions to pressing unsolved metallurgical problems connected with certain selected metals: aluminum alloys, beryllium, titanium, steels, superalloys, refractory metals and some metal-matrix composites. Aluminum Alloys For a number of years a series of strong aluminum alloys used for airframes has had an important bearing on the development of minimum- weight, highly efficient structures. Among these alloys are such familiar ones as 2024-T3, 2014-T6, 7075-T6, 7079-T6 and 7178-T6. A review of the development and use of strong aluminum alloys in aircraft structures indicates that before about 25 years ago there was very little application of products other than forgings in the high-strength tempers produced by precipitation heat treating to T6- or T8-type tempers. 1 As stated by Dix in 1944, "There has been a gradual evolution in engineering viewpoint regarding the mechanical characteristics which are required in a structural material suitable for aircraft. Formerly, emphasis was placed on a generous spread between yield and tensile strengths, on elongation, on impact strength and on resistance to corrosion. Aircraft structural engineers still differ widely as to the importance which they attach to these proper tie.” 2 It is fair to say that this evolution is still taking place, that the problem is much the same in 1970 as in 1944 - except that strength levels have advanced some - and the question remains as to how far we can go in that direction. In the meantime, a new group of alloys has received acceptance and widespread use. The first alloy of this group, 7075-T6, was formally introduced by Dix's 1944 paper. Various factors can affect the quality of B1112 and B1113 steel as produced in a bessemer plant; among them: vessel-charging practice, blowing practice, ingot-pouring practice, ingot delivery-time practice, pit-heating practices, and ingot-rolling practice. Evaluation of the influence of ingot delivery time on quality has been chosen as the subject for this paper because this time is completely within the control of the operator, and on this particular factor there is a tremendous amount of information in the dusty archives of the average steel plant. In order to know how much improvement can be made and when attention should be directed to other factors that influence quality, in the continual struggle for improvement, the effect of ingot delivery time must be accurately evaluated. Once this is done, the importance of other variables can be accurately obtained, thus eliminating the necessity of resorting to opinions that are of doubtful value at best. In the study described herein, extensive use was made of the statistical card system as a method of determining the effect of ingot delivery time as a quality factor in bessemer screw-stock grades by simple direct correlation. The value of this statistical method as a means of accurately determining the influence of various factors has been amply demonstrated by Work1 for the bessemer process and by Hand and Gould2 and Fetters and Chipman3 for the open-hearth process. The quality records of 300,000 tons of bessemer screw-stock billets were used in this study of the effect of ingot delivery time on the rejections for breaks, pipe, check and seams. The reduction in the number of rejections for poor quality reduces the costs and increases the productivity per man-hour. The operator today, more than ever before, must know how to keep costs down, how to do it most quickly and in the best way, and how to obtain the highest quality in line with the ever increasing demands of the customer. It is necessary for him to know the individual relations and interrelations between various factors affecting the quality of the manufactured product if he is to produce material that will meet competitively the cost, performance, and quality demands of the trade. The rates of migration of high-angle boundaries in zone-refined aluminum crystals rolled 20 to 70 pct in the (110)[i12/ orientation were studied. Following a recovery anneal at an appropriate temperature to stabilize the polygonized structure, boundary migration rates of artificially nucleated grains were measwed isothermally at several temperatures. Results indicate that the rate of boundary migration depends strongly on the amount of deformation and on the cell size of the polygonized matrix, and is related to the driving free energy by a power function. The degree of anisotropy in growth 0.f the re crystallized grains nn&apos;th preferred mientation is independent of deformation; the migration rates of the fast-moving and the slow-moping boundary segments of a gowing grain differ by as much as one order of magnitude. The actir\ation energy fm a grain boundary migration, although nearly the same for both the fast-moving and the slow-moving boundaries for a given deformalion, decreases from 45 to 30 kcal per mole with an increase in deformation from 20 to 70 pct reduction. Re crstallization by the growth of the artificially nucleated grains results in preferred orientation. The Percentuge of&apos; grains favorably oriented for growth increases with increasing deformation. None of these grains corresponds to the ideal Kronberg-Wilson orientation relationship. The observed growth aniso-tropy is discussed in terms of boundary structure. The boundary velocity as a function of the cell inter -facial area, or the driving free energy, is discussed in the light of current theories of boundary migration. It is well established that recrystallization with re-orientation occurs by the migration of high-angle boundaries of strain-free grains. The driving force for this process is provided by the free energy stored in the metal during deformation. A quantitative study of the effect of varying driving force on grain boundary migration in deformed metals has not been possible heretofore, primarily because of: 1) concurrent recovery steadily decreasing the available driving free energy for boundary migration, &apos;-3 and 2) in-homogeneity of strain in the deformed metal.4 Aust and Rutter3 studied grain boundary migration in striated single crystals of zone-refined lead. Although the driving free energy in such crystals remains unaltered during annealing, this method does not provide a range of driving free energies over which measurements of grain boundary migration can be made. In the present investigation, the rates of migration of high-angle boundaries in deformed aluminum zone- refined single crystals were studied at various temperatures, after deformation ranging from 20 to 70 pct reduction by rolling at -78°C in the (ll0)[i12] orientation. The boundary migration rates along different crystallographic directions were determined under steady-state conditions, i.e., in the absence of competing recovery processes or impingement of recrystallized grains growing into the deformed single crystal matrix. Simultaneous recovery was eliminated by suitable anneals prior to the boundary migration measurements. The recrystallized grains, which grew a ni so tropically into the homogeneously polygonized matrix, developed flat boundary segments during early stages of growth. These boundary segments subsequently migrated along a direction approximately normal to the boundary plane into the matrix rystal. Increasing deformation over the range employed was estimated to increase the driving free energy for boundary migration by about five times. The kinetics of the boundary migration process, examined under these conditions, indicate that the boundary velocity is greatly affected by a small change of the driving free energy in the matrix crystals. These results were examined in the light of the current theories of grain boundary migration. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Single crystal strips (9 by 1 by 0.125 in.) of zone-refined aluminum, were seed-grown by the Bridgman method in a high-purity graphite mold (<lo ppm ash) at 1 in. per hr. Precautions were taken to minimize contamination of the metal during crystal preparation and subsequent handling. Spectrographic analysis of the metallic impurities in the grown crystals is Qven in Table I. The crystals were rolled in the (110)[112] orientation at -78°C to various reductions in thickness, ranging from 20 to 70 pct, in 10 pct increments. The desired reduction was achieved by many rolling passes, each being no more than 0.002 in. To minimize surface friction, the crystal was rolled between two thin layers of teflon. For those crystals rolled more than 40 pct, it was necessary to remove the disturbed surface layers by electropolishing at -5" to -10°C at an intermediate stage of rolling. The edges of deformed crystals were removed by a jeweler&apos;s saw while submerged in alcohol at -78° C to obtain samples of about ? by i in. The distorted metal at the cut edges and the surface layers were then removed by electropolishing, with removal of a minimum of 0.004 in. from each surface. The thickness of the crystals prior to rolling was chosen so that the final thickness was 0.025 in. for all samples. These deformed single crystals were each prean-nealed for 1 hr at an appropriate temperature in the range of 130" to 280°C, depending upon the amount of deformation. THE following paper is intended to be suggestive only, and to open the way for discussion and further observation. Its preparation was requested only two days before the time limit set for the submission of the papers comprising this symposium. Thus no time existed for detailed studies so it is largely a memorandum of such facts as have come incidentally to the notice of the writer in the study of coal in the field. The field study of sulfur in coal has received very little special attention or description from coal students. The presence of sulfur concretions is noted in hundreds of descriptions, and certain benches of a coal bed may be described as "sulfury" or the presence and position of sulfur bands may be noted in coal sections in connection with sampling. It may be accepted that some sulfur is present in all coal. The amount varies greatly in different regions, in different beds, and in the same bed in different areas. The anthracite of Rhode Island comes the nearest of any coal known to the writer of being free from sulfur, several analyses of that coal showing less than 0.1 per cent. Subbituminous coals in Colorado in a few places have close to 0.2 per cent. of sulfur on the dry-coal basis and in other states subbituminous coals approach this lower limit. Bituminous coals seldom run under 0.4 per cent. of sulfur on the dry basis, though in a few places dry bituminous coals in Colorado and Washington have between 0.3 and 0.4 per cent. The better known bituminous coals have almost everywhere over 0.4 per cent. The best of the Pocahontas and New River coals run close to 0.4 per cent., but there is very little commercial coal in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, or the other states that runs under 0.5 per cent. on the dry basis. From these minimum figures, the amount will range up to 5 or 6 per cent. or higher if visible sulfur is not excluded. It must be remembered that the usual -analysis of a coal bed is not intended to give the total proportion of sulfur in the bed but the amount in the coal after the removal of the more obvious and larger sulfur masses.
