Introduction and Importance of the Industry Sand, as described in this chapter, is a crude product used for ballast on railroads and highways, and as the fine aggregate in concrete, mortar, plaster and in asphalt paving materials. The sand used in glass, as a molding sand, and as a source of silica is described in Chapter 43. Sand and gravel together constitute the mineral raw materials of largest volume produced from the earth. In 1958, as reported by the U.S. Bureau of Mines,21 680,080,000 tons of sand and gravel (including industrial sand) were produced in the United States. The nearest competitor was crushed rock of which 532,818,000 tons were produced. Coal, both bituminous and anthracite accounted for only 431,616,689 tons in the same year. In dollar value, sand and gravel were exceeded only by cement, crushed rock and fuels. Hence it is a major unit of the mineral-producing industry. As an example, one plant in California operates around the clock at an average rate of 1,500 tons per hour, and at peak intervals has shipped over 4,000 tons per hour, all by trucks. Nevertheless, it is controlled by one man through a panel of push buttons that control the crushing, screening, washing, grading, stock piling, and reclaiming of the products. Because sand and gravel are low-valued commodities, but are used in every construction undertaking in every city, village, farm, dam and highway, they are produced in almost every county in the United States and southern Canada, by thousands of individual operators, very few of whom operate in more than one community. Many operations, particularly those established to supply the needs of major dams that are under construction, or of major segments of new highways, are temporary in nature, and the equipment installed is more or less portable. Because of the bulky nature of sand and gravel, there is very little interstate movement, and almost no exports or imports, except a little movement back and forth across the border of the United States and Canada. First, the material needs definition. Definitions Sand and gravel have been defined as continuously graded unconsolidated materials that appear in the earth's surface as a result of the natural disintegration of rocks. Both normally appear together, but in a wide variety of sizes, types and range of size classification. The American Society for Testing Materials has tentatively revised its definition of "sand" as: granular material passing the 3/8-in. sieve and almost entirely passing the No. 4 (4760-micron) sieve and predominantly retained on the No. 200 (74-micron) sieve, and resulting from natural disintegration and abrasion of rock or processing of completely friable sandstone (ASTM Designation C 58-55T). The Society's tentative revision of its definition of "gravel" is: granular material predominantly retained on the No. 4 (4760-micron) sieve and resulting from natural disintegration and abrasion of rock or processing of weakly bound conglomerate (ASTM 125-55T). With the increasing importance of clay in drilling operations which demand more precise and exacting control over its behavior, there has come the realization that most of our present methods of control over many of its important properties still represent more of an art than a science. Such a situation with respect to a material of such industrial significance is unfortunate, and naturally many investigations have been conducted to improve our knowledge. In general, these investigations have revealed the complex nature of clay behavior and while sometimes they may not have seemed to contribute directly to a solution of the field operator's problems they have been of inestimable importance in bringing to light the broad fundamental scientific principles upon which must be based any effective working theory correlating the known facts of clay behavior and predicting profitable new lines of attack for its improvement. Major Facts Concerning Behavior of Clays In the study of clays, as in that of most other colloidal materials, it has been impossible to make progress by the study of isolated facts. On the other hand, analysis of large groups of facts, many of which seem at first completely unrelated, can lead to a deeper insight into the structure of clays and the mechanism of their behavior. It will be well to list the major facts on which the analysis here presented is based, starting with those that have emerged repeatedly from past investigations and which thereby constitute an impregnable foundation upon which must rest any comprehensive theory of clay behavior: 1. Clays consist of hydrated aluminosilicates of extremely fine and variable particle size. 2. Suspended in water, clays exhibit variable degrees of swelling, depending upon their origin and upon the chemical and colloidal nature of any other substances present. The magnitude of the swelling is a direct indication of the extent to which the clay has become dispersed.

In spite of many investigations of the occlusion of hydrogen in iron, the nature of the process and the reasons for the accompanying effects upon the metal are still open questions. This is in large part due to three causes: (1) the difficulty of obtaining iron of adequate purity as starting material; (2) the occurrence of allotropic transformations, which complicate the effects; and (3) the fact that the body-centered cubic modification does not lend itself readily to crystallographic investigation. The present paper attempts a critical review and correlation of the somewhat scattered and disconnected existing observations, and an experimental determination of the extent to which the conclusions that appear to follow from these are applicable to iron of really high purity, studied under well-defined conditions. Review Although only a comparatively few investigations have so far been made on the pure system iron-hydrogen, there is a much larger volume of literature which throws some light on the problem but falls short of a place in the systematic investigations, either because no attempt was made to measure equilibrium conditions or because the metal used was not iron or the gas not pure hydrogen. Such results have been variously dismissed in the past as of no importance, or as too complicated to try to explain; or they have been explained in terms of any of a dozen or more pictures, each of which is contradicted by data from other sources. The present importance of these data thus arises from their very mass and diversity, which present a picture of occlusion as a phenomenon whose variability cannot be ignored. We have attempted to organize the literature into groups comprising similar experiments or data leading to similar conclusions, thus of necessity sacrificing accuracy of historical order. Lattice Occlusion.—Throughout this discussion, the term "lattice occlusion" will be used to denote the formation of a simple solid solution of a gas in a metal lattice, usually of interstitial distribution. Introduction.-The special object of these notes is to describe the mixing, testing, and use of mud-ladened water for rotary drilling in such a way as to make them helpful to the driller, the operator, or the engineer in solving his own special drilling problems. The structures, apparatus and tools used are indicated in a general way. No attempt is made to describe the art of rotary drilling; only such description as are necessary to make plain the use of mud are given. The information is the result of actual experience in drilling in Coastal Plain formations. The materials encountered in the wells drilled were unconsolidated sands, gravels, and clays, in which thin layers of sandstones, shell conglomerates, and shales began to appear at about 1,200 ft. in depth, although one well was drilled to 3,018 ft. without encountering any cemented or indurated materials. Unusual Conditions.-The general surface of the ground where the drilling was done being hardly a foot above mean tide, and the daily tidal variation being about 15 in., it was found necessary to plank over the sod surface with 3-in. plank to work from. A 30 by 30 ft. planked area was sufficient to carry the derrick with equipment and 2,500 ft. of 4-in. drill pipe stacked in it. The derrick was set up 3 ft. on cribbed blocking arranged to spread the load over the planking. The engine, boilers, and pipe yard were also carried on 3-in. planking. Drilling Outfit.-This consisted of a derrick, 20 by 20 ft. and 84 ft. high, two 35 h.p., "oil country" boilers, one double 8 ¼ by 10 in. reversible engine, two 10 by 6 by 12 in. duplex mud pumps, one 15-in. rotary, "hoisting works" with chain drive, hoisting block with line, crown block with pulleys, rotary' jetting swivels, hose, complement of tools, pipes and connections, and. a mud mixer, with engine.

This paper is the result of a research program entered into cooperatively by the General Reinsurance Corporation and Lehigh University in January 1944. The research program was instituted to find a more positive method to determine the presence of hazardous roof conditions in mining operations. The co-authors, together with Mr. R. D. Currie, Engineer for the General Reinsurance Corporation, started working on the project in January 1944, first undertaking a library search; second, a preliminary study based on some existing equipment; third, the design of new and more suitable equipment; and finally, the field testing of equipment and methods. PURPOSE Any study of the accident statistics of mining operations will disclose the rather startling fact that approximately 50 to 60 per cent of all fatal underground accidents in the anthracite and bituminous mines are caused by falls of roof and coal, the metal and nonmetal mines showing only a slightly smaller percentage. Advancements in safety engineering have produced definite results in the decrease of accidents due to blasting, haulage, electricity, and explosions but no such decrease is shown in those caused by falls

Dense, adherent, and ductile coatings of chromium can be applied to Molybdenum by selectively freezing out the chromium solute from a supersaturated copper-or tin-rich liquid alloy. The successful exploitation of this technique depends on the control of variables common to any freezing process. Under the most favorable combimtion of supersaturation, nucleation, and mass-transfey, coatings as thick as 0.004 in. can be obtained. In exploratory experiments it was found that a coating of chromium may be applied to molybdenum by immersing the molybdenum body in a supercooled copper-chromium or tin-chromium melt and selectively freezing out the contained chromium onto the molybdenum body. Supercooling of the liquid metal plating bath can be achieved by cooling, or the maintenance of thermal or concentration gradients in the melt. The technique is similar to conventional dip-plating procedures where the sample is immersed in a molten bath of the pure plating medium, except that in these studies, the plating medium consisted of a dilute solution of chromium in liquid tin or copper. The success of this method requires that the base material to be plated be isomorphous with the coating and insoluble in the plating bath. In addition, the plating bath, while having an appreciable solubility for the coating component, must have negligible solid solubility in the solid plate. Such relationships exist in the molybdenum-chromium, chromium-tin, and chromium-copper systems. Liquid tin and copper are satisfactory as the plating solvent, because although chromium is appreciably soluble in both of these liquid metals, solid inter-solubility is almost negligible, and no compound formation occurs. The same relationships exist between molybdenum and copper or tin except that the solubility of molybdenum in liquid tin or copper is insignificant. It is this combination of solubility relationships, as well as the completely isomorphous nature of the molybdenum-chromium system, which allows the formation of a chromium coating on molybdenum by the selective freezing mechanism. Since the main deterrent to the widespread use of molybdenum for high-temperature structural applications is its poor oxidation resistance, the formation of a dense and ductile chromium coating on molybdenum may well be of commercial significance. In addition, the basic principle of coating formation by selective freezing should be applicable to other metallic or even nonmetallic systems. The precipitation of the solute from a liquid metallic solution, for the formation of a protective coating, has not been previously considered in the literature. Frequently, however, a similar phenomenon has been described in the corrosion of metallic heat exchangers by liquid metals1 wherein temperature gradients in the liquid metal heat-transfer medium result in the formation of layers or deposits of metallic residue2 in the cooler portions of the system. Impregnating techniques using liquid baths have been tried as a plating process. Semchyshen and Barr, for instance, have successfully diffused chromium into molybdenum by immersing the molybdenum specimen in a liquid tin-chromium or copper-chromium alloy. This simple holding technique fails to produce a layer of pure chromium and requires prolonged immersion to allow for the diffusion-activated enrichment of the molybdenum. During the course of this investigation, most of the phase relations published for the copper-chromium4 and molybdenum-chromium4 systems, were found reliable. It was necessary, however, to investigate the solubilities of chromium and molybdenum in liquid tin as well as the solubility of molybdenum in liquid copper. These determinations were made by a simpie weight loss technique on materials of the same purity as used in the plating studies. PROPERTY of Malartic Gold Fields Ltd. is situaated in the great clay belt in the northern part of the Province of Quebec. This belt represents the floor of the glacial lake Barlow-Ojibway. The clay blanket has a gently rolling, almost flat surface, with here and there projecting knobs and ridges that outline the large irregularities of the surface on which the clay was deposited. At irregular intervals glacial eskers dominate the landscape. The ore-bearing country rock is covered by strata of clay, sand, and silt to a depth varying to 40 ft. There are serious structural problems when it is necessary to place loads of unequal intensities on this surface to support buildings and machinery for a modern mining plant. Earlier mining companies and their engineers paid little attention to the science of soil mechanics, partly because they believed it unnecessary and partly because they knew little of the subject. The results are evident in some of the tottering structures in older camps. Careful analysis of soil problems is well worth-while, since cost of foundations may vary from 20 to 50 pct of the final cost of a structure. Low operating and maintenance costs can be achieved only in this way.

DURING the period extending from May, 1922, to September, 1923, the copper-refining furnaces of the Great Falls Reduction Department of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. at Great Falls, Mont., were operated exclusively with pulverized coal as fuel. The installation was made first as an experiment. It proved successful from the start and was abandoned solely because fuel oil from the Sunburst field became available at a price sufficiently low to make its use desirable from an economic standpoint. The equipment required for pulverized coal has, however, been kept intact and is available for immediate use should the oil supply fail. Inasmuch as pulverized coal had been used on two large reverberatory smelting furnaces and was, at the time we were considering its application to the copper-refining furnaces, being used on the Wedge furnaces roasting zinc concentrate for the electrolytic zinc plant, we were equipped with a coal-pulverizing plant of ample capacity to supply pulverized coal for the furnace refinery. The only problem was to devise suitable means for transporting pulverized coal from the pulverizer plant, located in the smelter building, to the refinery about 1000 ft. distant and about 150 ft. above the level of the pulverizer plant. When studying this installation, it should be borne in mind that the layout represents an adaptation suited to the existing conditions at this particular plant. The installation was entirely satisfactory and uniformly dependable but might be modified to advantage from an operating point of view if an entirely new installation were being planned.

The design and construction of cross-country pipelines for fluids such as crude oil appears relatively simple compared to the complex problems encountered in slurry systems. Considerable effort has been expended in hydraulic research laboratories in an attempt to improve the understanding of slurry behavior. This effort has been rewarded with considerable success and is best illustrated by the large number of slurry systems now planned or under construction. However, slurry transport in pipelines is still, in many instances, more of an art than a science. In order to minimize the risk factors in the construction and operation of large scale slurry systems, studies are frequently conducted in pilot scale test loops such as the one at the Colorado School of Mines Research Institute. The pilot scale projects are designed to provide the basic engineering data necessary to design slurry transport pipeline systems. Usually three slurry solid concentrations are pumped at various line velocities and optimum slurry densities and velocities are determined. Critical velocities, friction head losses, power requirements, and so forth, are also determined from measurements and calculations. Wear tests are also strongly recommended and anticipated pipe wear rates in inches per million tons of solids reported.

INTRODUCTION At the point a company decides to begin mine development and wishes to convince lending institutions that the proposed operation will return their borrowed funds, plus interest, over the terms of the loan, communications between lender and borrower are crucial. The importance of the mine feasibility presentation should not be underplayed, especially as new projects continue to increase in size, complexity, and cost. While the content and emphasis of a report to the lender will vary according to the particular project and type of debt financing sought, there is a general base of information upon which all such studies are built. THE PROJECT'S TECHNICAL ASPECTS Here, the object is to satisfy the lender that he will not be unduly exposed to technical risks as a result of the physical scope of the project. Reserves The feasibility report submitted to financial institutions should include an adequate description of the geologic setting, mineralogy, ore types, and reserves broken down into such recognized categories as proven/probable/possible or measured/indicated/inferred. Rather than a bald statement of reserves, lenders prefer to have detailed information on: History of exploration Drilling, both percussion and core, with core recovery, drill hole spacing, analyses, and continuity of mineralization Bulk sampling, with core assay comparisons Overburden, with stripping ratios Specific methodology of reserve calculation, and Geologic reserves vs. mineable reserves. As a rule of thumb, a lender would prefer to see that reserves in the proven class alone are sufficient to support operations at the design rates until the borrowed funds are repaid. (See also Schreiber above in this Chapter.) Mining The rationale for adoption of a particular mining technique should be presented as well as descriptions and justifications for: Preproduction development Preliminary mine plan, with forecasts of grades and material movements Geotechnical test work which influenced decisions Mining recoveries and efficiencies Major equipment, with type, model, rating life, spares, replacement schedules, utilization, and productivity Manpower requirements and work schedules Design assumptions Ore stockpiling and blending Environmental requirements, and Waste disposal Processing If a new ore body is to be developed or a new process used, it is important to provide details of test work, scale up, and extrapolation factors. A basic process description with a summary of the studies which justify the intended processing route should be included with the following data:

Use of coal thermal dryers has steadily increased since 1928 when one of the predecessor companies of the present Consolidation Coal Cu. constructed a complete preparation plant with thermal dryers. Today there are about 25 additional preparation plants that, all together, use over 65 individual thermal dryers of almost every type. The thermal dryer is a heat generator and the unit may have a separate furnace or a firebox that is an integral part of the dryer. It is also a materials handling device that allows an intimate mixture of wet coal and hot gases with instrumentation for temperature control and. in some cases, the more difficult flow rate of hot gases. The materials handling portion of the dryer is subject to the normal wear and teal of any similar device plus effects of heat, water vapor, moisture: and, sometimes, acid. With present emphasis on air pollution. most fine coal dryers have wet scrubbers.

THIS remarkable mine, to which attention has lately been drawn, is situated not far from the New River, in Ashe County, North Carolina, on a spur of the Blue Ridge which lies between the main crest of this name and the so-called Iron Mountain, a part of the Unaka or Smoky Mountain range. It is on a true fissure-lode, which cuts the strata of gneiss and mica-schist of the region. These, which have the lithological characters of what I have called the Montalban or White Mountain series, have here a dip of about forty-five degrees to the southeast, while the lode is vertical, with a course north 60° east. Both the country-rock and the lode, as is usual in this region, are decomposed to considerable depths ; and the latter exhibits a cap of hydrous peroxide of iron or gossan, blocks of which, left by the denudation of the softer inclosing rock, are scattered over the surface, and first called attention to the locality as a source of iron ore. In sinking upon this lode, it was found that the porous gossan at a certain depth became charged with carbonate and red oxide of copper, and lower down was replaced by sulphuretted ores of this metal of remarkable richness. This deposit was worked for copper, in an irregular manner, before the late civil war, but was afterwards abandoned, and only reopened during the present year, by Messrs. S. S. & J. E. Clayton, of Baltimore. The outcrop has been traced for 1900 feet, and the sulphuretted copper ores have been met with in five shafts in a distance of 661 feet, a drift having moreover been carried for the above distance through the solid ore. The breadth of the lode, so far as opened, varies from six to eight feet to fourteen feet in places, and that of the outcrop of gossan is, in some parts, twenty feet. After comparing this deposit with the copper mines of Ducktown, Polk County, Tennessee, and those of Carroll County, Virginia, it is evident that we have, at Ore Knob, to do with the same kind of black ores as were met with in these mines, and will be noticed further on. Beneath the gossan, at Ore Knob, is found, in some parts, an iron-black, friable, drusy, crystalline, sulphuretted ore, inclosing grains of quartz, garnet, and magnetite, besides a black non-magnetic mineral, not attacked by nitric acid. GROUND raw material as fed to the cement kiln generally is a mixture of two to four components, each of which may have widely varying physical and grindability characteristics. Chemically similar materials found in the same or different deposits may also differ appreciably in physical properties, depending on their crystalline structure. The calcareous or principal cement raw material may vary from a soft chalky limestone or friable cement rock at one plant to a hard limestone or oyster shell at another plant. Argillaceous materials include clays, shales and granulated slag. Siliceous and/or iron-bearing material, including sand, iron ore and cinders, may also be required in addition for certain types of mixes. Frequently differences in grindability characteristics are not given the attention they deserve in comparing grinding results at one plant with those at another or in selecting suitable circuits or equipment. Many types of crushing and grinding units are used, with numerous open and closed circuit arrangements. Both wet and dry processes are used successfully. When rebuilding or installing a new grinding department, the choice of process or circuit in some cases may be dictated by the nature of the materials being ground but in other cases it may be the result of good salesmanship or a compromise. An over-all evaluation of wet process vs. dry process grinding should not be made without considering the effects on all other producing departments in the plant. In general, the more recent grinding installations, both wet and dry, have employed closed circuits, but many older open circuits are still in successful operation. In our experience, closed-circuit raw grinding pays, because of lower power consumption and less operating labor per ton of product. However, some dry open-circuit mills with improved equipment and operating methods compare favorably in performance with dry closed-circuit units. CHARACTER OF GROUND RAW MIX (KILN FEED) Grinding in the cement plant in general requires a considerably finer product than in most ore-grinding operations. A distinction between fineness of kiln feed and of cement may be made in that kiln feed preferably should be ground to a limiting size, whereas finished cement should include a range of size fractions including sufficient fine flours to give a product with satisfactory physical qualities. Grinding raw mix for kiln feed therefore is more comparable to ore grinding, although the limiting size is smaller. Most kiln feeds are ground from 85 to 95 per cent passing 200-mesh, depending on mix composition. Some cement chemists believe that raw materials cannot be too fine, since finer particles theoretically combine more readily and intimately in the kiln. However, there are certain definite practical objections to extremely fine kiln feed, such as loss of kiln dust, unstable material flow through the kiln and greater difficulty in control of chemical composition due to dust loss, and the disproportion of fines from the more easily ground component. Nine intermetallic compounds were tested in tension at various temperatures. Seven exhibited extensive plastic deformation at elevated temperatures. Correlations of tensile strength and elongation are attempted with melting (decomposition) temperature, valence electron configurations of the component elements, heat of formation, crystal structure, density, and volume decrease accompanying compound formation. A LTHOUGH intermetallic compounds have been -tX known for many years, the study of their mechanical properties, particularly in tension, is just beginning. The problem has been unattractive because of the well-known, erratic behavior of brittle materials tested in tension. The strong influence of surface or internal flaws as stress raisers in non-ductile materials and the effect of eccentricity of loading in superimposing bending stresses on the state of tension in the specimen are extremely difficult to mitigate and impossible to completely eliminate. Thus, tensile properties determined for brittle materials, such as intermetallic compounds at temperatures low in comparison to their melting points, are at best only general guides to the values to be expected in an ideal test of a perfect specimen of the material. It is, nevertheless, surprising that apparently no attempt was made to follow up the pioneer work of Tammann and Dahl1 in this field. Working with crude apparatus, these investigators succeeded in showing unequivocally that at temperatures sufficiently close to their melting points (from 75" to 400°C for the compounds tested) intermetallic compounds did exhibit plasticity. This was indicated by the appearance of slip lines on the surface of the specimen. No observations of strength were made in these tests, which were of a compressive or indentation type. Rossi2 in 1932 attempted to study the physical and mechanical properties of single crystals of a group of intermetallic compounds. However, he was able to prepare only one material, Cu2Z8,, in the form of large, defect-free, single crystals. Thus, he was able to report only the relative fragility of the compounds at room temperature. He reported one compound, Ag,Zn,, to be somewhat plastic at room temperature and Cu,Si to be friable, the latter in agreement with results reported herein. Although test results are available only in classified literature, it has also been announced that MoSi, possesses some ductility at elevated temperatures." In 1948 and 1949 Savitskii and Savitskii and Baron -ublished their work on the hot extrusion of Mg-Zn, Al-Mg, and Cu-Zn compounds. Under the favorable state of stress existing for this process MgZn, MgZn,, MgZn,, ß (Al-Mg), ? (Al-Mg) and 0 (Cu-Zn) could be reduced by amounts up to 90 pct at elevated temperatures. These authors also report that hardnesses of Mg-Zn compounds decrease from room temperature values of about 300 kg per sq mm to 30 to 50 kg per sq mm at 325°C. They found that alloys consisting solely of one Mg-Zn compound were most resistant to softening on heating, mixtures of a compound and eutectic less resistant, and mixtures of two compounds least resistant. The problem of eliminating the hazards of hoisting in mines has been with us since the industry passed its earliest stages, when coal and ore could be won from surface working and tunnels. At first, safety devices were introduced as means of decreasing the amount of labor necessary to produce the mineral, or to increase the amount that could be obtained from a certain opening. For example, crude ladders replaced winding footpaths or steps cut into the walls of the pit or shaft, decreasing the distance it was necessary to carry the product to the surface and eliminating, to some extent, the hazard introduced by the precarious footing afforded by such paths and steps. Latcr, instead of being carried from the pit on the backs of men, the product was hoisted in buckets or baskets on a rope passing over a pulley or around a windlass. Thus the capacity of the pit was considerably increased, and the hazard due to making many trips up and down the shaft was eliminated. From such beginnings accident prevention in mine hoisting advanced with the importance of the industry, until at present hoisting compares favorably with other branches of the mining industry with reference to safe practices. As in the other branches, this progress has been accomplished along two general lines—by legislation, rules, and education, and by the installation of safety devices. Though due credit must be given the former, it is not so satisfactory as the latter. Legislation, to be effective, requires a policing and inspection system to guarantee enforcement, such as we cannot hope to inaugurate. Rules may be satisfactory so long as the employer controls the labor market, and dismissal or some other form of discipline is an effective means of insuring obedience to the rules; but where labor demand is in excess of the supply, or where labor organizations are in control, such measures are not effective. An educational campaign will draw attention to hazards and may awaken a desire to avoid accidents by exercising the proper care. It is necessary, therefore, to place our reliance mainly on mechanical devices to prevent accidents, and to depend as little as possible on laws,

This remarkable mine, to which attention has lately been drawn, is situated not far from the New River, in Ashe County, North Carolina, on a spur of the Blue Ridge which lies between the main crest of this name and the so-called Iron Mountain, a part of the Unaka or Smoky Mountain range. It is on a true fissure-lode, which cuts the strata of gneiss and mica-schist of the region. These, which have the lithological characters of what I have called the Montalban or White Mountain series, have here a dip of about forty-five degrees to the southeast, while the lode is vertical, with a course north 60' east. Both the country-rock and the lode, as is usual in this region, are decomposed to considerable depths; and the latter exhibits a cap of hydrous peroxide of iron or gossan, blocks of which, left by the denudation of the softer inclosing rock, are scattered over the surface, and first called attention to the locality as a source of iron ore. In sinking upon this lode, it was found that the porous gossan at a certain depth became charged with carbonate and red oxide of copper, and lower down was replaced by sulphuretted ores of this metal of remarkable richness. This deposit was worked for copper, in an irregular manner, before the late civil war, but was afterwards abandoned, and only reopened during the present year, by Messrs. S. S. & J. E. Clayton, of Baltimore. The outcrop has been traced for 1900 feet, and the sulphuretted copper ores have been met with in five shafts in a distance of 661 feet, a drift having moreover been carried for the above distance through the solid ore. The breadth of the lode, so far as opened, varies from six to eight feet to fourteen feet in places, and that of the outcrop of gossan is, in some parts, twenty feet. After comparing this deposit with the copper mines of Ducktown, Polk County, Tennessee, and those of Carroll County, Virginia, it is evident that we have, at Ore Knob, to do with the same kind of black ores as were met with in these mines, and will be noticed further on, Beneath the gossan, at Ore Knob, is found, in some parts, an iron-black, friable, drusy, crystalline, sulphuretted ore, inclosing grains of quartz, garnet, and magnetite, besides a black non-magnetic mineral, not attacked by nitric acid.
