The anomalous behavior of hydrogen in iron is examined and a new model is proposed It is postulated that hydrogen single and di-interstitials are in equilibrium with each other. When the binding enthalpy of the di-interstitial, B, is assumed to be about 10 kcal per mole, the predicted temperature dependence of the solubility agrees reasonably well with the reported data. Effective diffusiuity is calculated assuming the di-interstitials to be immobile. Since the number of mobile single interstitials is greatly reduced at lower temperatures, the effective diffusivity is decreased. A good agreement in the temperature dependence of diffusivity between theory and experiment is provided with B - 10 kcal per mole. The predicted diffusivity is also a function of total concentration of hydrogen and this appears to be Partly responsible for the large scatter in the reported data. HYDROGEN is known to form an interstitial solid solution with iron.''' At elevated temperatures, it has been well-established that hydrogen enters iron in the dissociated form and occupies the interstices, and that diffusion of hydrogen in iron is via the interstitial mechanism. The concentration, c, permeability, P, and diffusivity, D, of hydrogen in iron have been separately determined and are consistent with each other under the steady-state condition for temperatures above approximately 400°C; that is, the relationship P = c-D holds. At lower temperatures, however, anomalous behavior of hydrogen in iron has been observed by many investigators. The results of experimental studies4-'' of the diffusion of hydrogen in iron are summarized in Fig. 1, in which the values of D are plotted against the reciprocal temperature. Although there is an increasing divergence in observed values of D with decreasing temperature, the values of D at temperatures below approximately 200°C are definitely small as compared with the extrapolation from high-temperature data. The lines shown bracket the region containing the most probable data. The observed values of c6," are plotted against the reciprocal temperature in Fig. 2, where the dashed lines represent Geller and sun's'' most probable isobars at 1 and 100 atm. At high external hydrogen pressure and low temperatures, the values of c observed are higher than those expected from high temperature data. It is generally accepted that certain trapping mechanism is responsible for the anomalies, but the nature of the trapping mechanism has not been clarified. Various types of hydrogen traps were suggested in the literature, such as "rifts" in the lattice dislocations, voids, microcracks, and so forth. However, no quantitative account of the observed behavior has been given in terms of these trapping mechanisms. Formation of methane in hydrogen-charged steel was found by ~odgurski." This appears to explain the existence of the so-called "residual" hydrogen,4 but not the observed anomalies of hydrogen in iron. McNabb and Foster' proposed a mathematical analysis in terms of a trapping mechanism. However, the physical significance of the traps was not clarified. The necessity of evaluating five parameters in their theory made comparison with experiment difficult. In the present paper, a model is proposed in which the anomalous behavior of hydrogen is attributed to the formation of hydrogen di-interstitials at lower temperatures. In this model, it is postulated that single and di-interstitials are in equilibrium with each other. (The hydrogen di-interstitial is to be distinguished from a hydrogen molecule which may exist in voids.) It can then be shown that most of the anomalies can be explained by assuming that the di-interstitials are virtually immobile and that the binding enthalpy of the di-interstitial, B, is approximately 10 kcal per mole. Predictions of the theory agree with the available experimental data reasonably well. Most beneficiation plants utilize automatic controls to varying degrees-some have the bare minimum of controls, others qualify as semi-auto- mated operations; a very few are nearing what may be termed "fully-automated" status. But for those plants that produce a filter cake product, the lack of suitable instrumentation for measuring and con- trolling the moisture of the filter cake has been a major stumbling block to fully-automated operations. Today in many cases, this bottle-neck can be removed because various moisture measuring devices are now available to permit automation of the filtering stage. What are these devices? . . . Where can they be used? To answer these questions, two types of operating plants-one, semi-automated and the other, almost fully automated-can be examined. Both plants employ disc filters from which is produced a magnetic concentrate for pelletizing. (The control schemes and equipment depicted in this article are similar to those usable in drum filter plants.)

New Mexico, after several years as the sixth ranking oil-producing state, was surpassed by Illinois and for 1939 ranks seventh in the United States. Oil production for 1939 was 36,746,840 bbl. Production for 1938 was 35,510,176 bbl., a gain of 0.033 per cent. Production for the year would have been greater had there been a pipe-line outlet for the Vacuum field. The complete shutdown during the latter part of August covering a period of 15 days meant a production loss of over 1,500,000 bbl. of oil. Daily production allowable as set by the Oil Conservation Commission has followed very closely the recommendations of the Bureau of Mines. It has been found that the recommended allowables as quoted by the Bureau of Mines do not always reflect the actual demand, as there is a considerable lag hetween the recommended amounts and the current demands. During the year the various operating companies have done considerable remedial work in setting packers to reduce the gas-oil ratios in the various fields. Six new fields were discovered in New Mexico during 1939; three in Lea County, two in Eddy County and one in Chaves County. In the early part of 1939 a committee composed of the various engineers and geologists recommended subdividing the old Artesia area into various producing pools. This division was accepted, therefore the total number of producing fields in New Mexico is considerably greater than the number of fields in 1938, but does not represent new fields discovered during the year. The southeastern area continues to he the largest producer of oil. During the year 2,716,551 bbl. were produced in Eddy County and 33,690,996 bbl. in Lea County. Total production ill the northwestern part of the state, which includes San ,Juan and McKinley Counties, was 338,293 bbl. At the beginning of the year the daily average nonmarginal well allowable for Lea County was 48 bbl. At the close of the year it was 49 bbl. The daily average production for the year was 97,313 bbl. During the year, 659 wells were drilled in the state, of which 565 were producing oil wells, 15 gas wells, 6 carbon dioxide gas wells and 73 dry holes. A volunteer class of thirteen students was formed, and the first summer school was held at Drifton, in July and August of that year (1877). The following extract, from an editorial notice in the iden of the organization of the school and the work required of the stiudens. "The students, on reporting to Professor Munroe, were divided into sqoade of two or three men each, and on Monday, July 2d, were aesigned to the qre of skilled miners, selected for the purpose by the mine boss, for instruction in gangway work. IT is widely believed that the nucleation of phase transformations in solid metals is accomplished by some type of local atomic fluctuations in the parent phase which arise from spontaneous diffusion in the metal or alloy system. Under appropriate conditions, these fluctuations are believed to be stable in the sense that the free energy of the entire system is lowered if the fluctuations, or nuclei, grow,' Under other conditions they are thought to be unstable in the sense that the free energy is lowered if they redissolve. The criterion for stability is usually taken as the size of the fluctuation. This view has been rationalized by Becker1 in terms of the free energy released by the volume of the nucleus and the free energy associated with the formation of a new surface surrounding the nucleus. The qualitative result of this reasoning is shown in Fig I where the changes in free energy for the surface and volume effects are plotted together with their sum against the radius of the nucleus. There is evidently always a critical size r. beyond which the release of free energy which is proportional to the volume always dominates the increase of free energy which is proportional to the surface area. Borelius2 has also attempted to rationalize the stability criterion for binary alloys, but in terms of the internal concentration of the fluctuations. He has found that, if surface energies are entirely ignored, the fluctuation must still reach a critical concentration if it is to become stable and avoid subsequent dilution. Although the Borelius theory fails to predict many observed nucleation phenomena such as the vanishing of the nucleation rate at the critical temperature, the major premise must certainly be valid. In this paper a reconciliation of the Becker and Borelius views is made by means of a search for nuclei which are at once stable with respect to both size and internal concentration, The increase in free energy per mole accompanying the formation of a nucleus which is just stable, ?fe, is independent of the path whereby the nucleus is brought into being. It is thus appropriate to seek critical nuclear attributes without reference to the fluctuation mechanism. The rate of nucleation, however, cannot be treated without a detailed understanding of the exact fluctuation process which produces stable nuclei. In this and succeeding papers the purpose will be to find the size, shape and internal concentration of the stable nucleus which is formed with a minimum increase in free energy in a wide variety of systems. THE NATURE OF THE NUCLEUS It is necessary to have rather detailed knowledge of the nature of a nucleus if ?Fe is to be computed. Natural stone or manufactured porcelain pebbles are used as the grinding elements in pebble mills and the mills are lined with stone or porcelain blocks. Steel balls usually form the grinding medium in ball mills, and the mills may be lined with steel. Pebble mills are used to avoid contamination by metal of the material being ground, to avoid rapid wear due to corrosion, and for other specialized reasons. Belgian silex (silica) blocks formerly were used widely for lining pebble mills, because of their good resistance to wear, light color, and low cost, but the importation of these blocks was suspended early in the war. The stocks of Belgian silex diminished so rapidly that it was found desirable to compare the properties of a number of domestic substitutes for use in critical operations. Accordingly, a study was made to determine the best substitutes for fine grinding of white pigment and for certain heavy-chemical process work such as the disintegration of phosphate rock in weak phosphoric acid solution. A comprehensive survey of substitute lining materials was not contemplated. It was stipulated at the beginning of the investigation that only materials on the market, available in large quantities, would be tested and that these should be reasonable substitutes from a wear-resistance viewpoint as determined from known physical characteristics. Marble and limestone, for example, could be eliminated immediately. Quartzite, granite and porcelain were selected as likely substitutes for Belgian silex and were subjected to quality tests. Materials Tested 1. Belgian Si1ex.—Sample blocks of a standard grade were taken from crates in which they had been imported. The stone was light gray in color and contained inclusions of small clusters of quartz crystals as well as light colored portions that might be calcite. This was a siliceous rock which appeared to be of igneous origin. 2. Quartzite.—Samples of quartzite were obtained from a quarry in Minnesota. The blocks exhibited a crystalline fracture. The stone was pink in color and composed of fine quartz crystals bound together with a siliceous cement. 3. Granite A was a fine-grained granite quarried in South Carolina. 4. Granite B was coarse-grained granite quarried in South Carolina. 5. Granite C was a coarse-grained granite quarried in North Carolina. 6. Porcelain A.—Sample blocks of the pebble-mill lining material were obtained direct from the manufacturer. It was white in color and of lower specific gravity than the natural materials. For perhaps one hundred years scientists have been engaged in attempts at devising a satisfactory method of classification of coal. During this time many charts, tables and graphs have been proposed, some of which have had considerable merit, but no one system has been found to be applicable to all ranks of coal, nor has any one system received general acceptance. In many of the proposals, water eliminated between room temperature and 105" C. has been regarded as extraneous matter and calculations have been made to the air-dry or water-free basis. Such methods of calculation do not lend themselves to satisfactory grouping of the high-moisture coals.1, 2 A consideration not only of the properties of the high-moisture coals and their behavior on drying but of the generally accepted ideas of the coalification process and the role of water in this process indicates that water is an essential constituent of all coals and therefore should not be neglected. For example, in such low-rank coals as the lignites of the Northern Great Plains' deposits the inherent moisture of the lignite as mined plays a very important part in the physical properties thereof. Freshly mined lignite contains upwards of 30 per cent water and is extremely tough and resistant to shock. Upon exposure to the atmosphere, the lump loses part of its moisture and checks and splits, leaving a friable and broken up residue. So far as we have been able to determine, water is the only thing lost in this process and we are forced to the conclusion that moisture plays an extremely important part in the structural properties of the original lignite. With reference to the coalification process, Mack and Hulett3 pointed out in 1917 the important part that water played therein. They observed that water cannot be removed from peat or coal by pressure alone, but only as the result of chemical reaction, and suggested that peat in its early stages may be largely a hydrosol. The occurrence of rock bursts in deep metal/nonmetal mines presents a major hazard to their safe and economical operation. As part of a Bureau of Mines program to reduce rock bursts in deep vein mining, a project was conducted in the Coeur d'Alene Mining District of Idaho to evaluate and demonstrate the mining of a destressed sill pillar using undercut-and-fill methods. A 50-ft sill pillar in a burst-prone area was preconditioned by drilling and blasting vertical holes in the ore. After raises were driven through the destressed pillar to the level above, it was mined by the undercut-and-fill method. The conclusion from this demonstration is that the combination of ore preconditioning and underhand mining resulted in greatly improved rock burst and ground control, allowing safe and efficient mining of a potentially hazardous, burst-prone pillar.

The recent growth of a sentiment among cyanide-plant designers against the use of gravity-stamps for the crushing preliminary to cyanidation may be said to date from the almost simultaneous perfection of the ribbed tube-rnill liner and of the tall, air-agitation tank. The first step in the resulting change of practice mas the universal adoption of the tube-mill for fine-grinding and the use of coarse screening on the battery. This was the beginning of the surrender of supremacy by the gravity-stamp; since merely the single fact that it was a more economical machine for crushing fine had retained it in favor as conlpared with ball-mills, rolls, or steam-stamps. The surrender, however, is not yet complete.

In view of the unfavorable discovery trend that has set in during the past few years, it seems permissible to infer that the large, more easily found crude reserves in Louisiana are now known. Without doubt, many new producing areas will be located, but in the light of development during the past few years the majority of new areas probably will be found at greater depths and from relatively poorer sands. f Although sufficient reserves exist in Louisiana to last at the present rate of production for a considerable period, additional reserves must be found in more intensive development of the presently known structures. In order to ensure the greatest ultimate recovery from such structures, the most advanced technical methods must be employed in their exploitation. Wherever possible, cycling and repressuring plants should be installed. 'here are presently in Louisiana, especially in south Louisiana, a great many fields that contain gas-condensate reservoirs. These reservoirs cannot be produced for their liquid hydrocarbon content under present conditions without wasting an enormous quantity of gas and creating underground waste. During the past year, Louisiana attained the rank of third among the oil-producing states of this country. With a proper program of exploitation and development, and with emphasis on conservation, Louisiana can maintain this position for a great many years. Production On Dec. 31, 1943, oil and/or gas were being. produced in 52 parishes, or 81 per cent of all the parishes in the state. Thirty-three of the parishes produced oil and gas, 14 produced oil, and 5 produced solely gas. Tensas Parish in north Louisiana and Assumption Parish in south Louisiana formerly contained no producing fields but during 1943 joined the ranks of the producing parishes. Twenty-three new fields, including one rediscovery, were found during 1943-—a rate of discovery almost comparable to that of the preceding year. Eleven of these new discoveries were either gas or gas-condensate fields. Thus, the trend of development in finding new reserves was also comparable to that of 1942. Many reasons of considerable merit have been advanced to account for the discouraging lack of crude-oil reserves found during the past year. None are, however, completely satisfactory.

In view of the unfavorable discovery trend that has set in during the past few years, it seems permissible to infer that the large, more easily found crude reserves in Louisiana are now known. Without doubt, many new producing areas will be located, but in the light of development during the past few years the majority of new areas probably will be found at greater depths and from relatively poorer sands. f Although sufficient reserves exist in Louisiana to last at the present rate of production for a considerable period, additional reserves must be found in more intensive development of the presently known structures. While the coal industry in general has been slow in accepting automation, the last few years have seen a myriad of products developed by the private sector. These packages run the full gamut from sophisticated geological information systems to line entry discounted cash flow analyses. This paper is an attempt to unravel the confusion that may exist about mining software. Discussions will highlight major differences between software products (such as block vs. grid models, prefeasibility programs vs. Monte Carlo analyses), briefly discuss known vendors, list known package features and touch on hardware requirements. The paper also focuses on the costs of automation (both software and hardware), possible trade-offs, advantages to in-house systems (vs. timesharing), a recommended review/selection process (including suggested RFP format), a test case procedure, when to bring in a consultant, and staffing considerations.

ProbDly there has never been a year during which the petroleum industry expended so much effort as in 1929 in an attempt to rectify its ills. Eventually good will undoubtedly result, but as yet there have been no marked changes from the unhappy conditions familiar to all. Throughout the year remedies were sought that would cure the long-existing troubles of overproduction and waste. Proration of production and voluntary curtailment of output, for a short time considered the means for stability, not only failed but contributed to further waste and created a false sense of security. It encouraged a high rate of field development, weakened the economic structure by excessive development of newly discovered reserves and absorbed large sums of capital yielding meager or negative return. The manufacturing of gasoline by refiners without regard for market requirements furthered the unsatisfactory condition by falsely stimulating the demand for crude and placed on the market an oversupply of finished products, particularly gasoline. The marketing section of the industry has made progress by its adoption of the Code of Ethics as promulgated by the Federal Trade Commission and by the formation of an Export Association. The year 1929 opened not only with a current supply of oil exceeding demand but with an additional daily shut-in and potential supply variously estimated at from 3,000,000 to 5,000,000 bbl. This situation stimulated the industry, through the American Petroleum Institute, to attempt to work out an economically sound solution which would further conservation by bringing supply and demand into closer balance. Production Control After a thorough study of producing conditions, the committee of the American Petroleum Institute had for its recommendation that the production of crude oil in 1929 be held in check to an amount equal to that produced during the year 1928. The Federal Oil Conservation Board heard the appeal of the American Petroleum Institute and referred the matter to the Department of Justice. Fifty to 75 million years ago, hydrocarbon-bearing rocks were formed in the Green River formation of Colorado, Wyoming and Utah. The hydro- carbons can be extracted from these rocks, marl- stone but misnamed oil shale, after crushing and intense heating. At about 900°F the marlstone decomposes to produce liquid shale oil. A press release from the Colony Development Co. describes a process which may permit, for the first time, economically feasible access to shale oil. Shale oil has resisted economic extraction for almost three centuries. According to the USBM, a patent was issued as early as 1684 in England to produce "oyle from a kind of stone". France produced oil from marlstone in 1838 and a dozen years later, Scotland started an oil shale industry, producing kerosine, that lasted nearly 100 years. In both countries, the process involved crushing the stone and retorting it to decompose the kerogen-a long and costly process at that time. In 1859, Edwin L. Drake brought in the first oil well in Titusville, Pa., and shale oil faded into oblivion.
