Data are presented which show that fractions of varying densities from the same coals are oxidized at different rates by nitric acid. From oxidation data, the approximate quantity of "bright" and "dull" components may be calculated. Definite relationships between oxidation rate and rank are shown for density fractions from at least two bituminous coals.

There has been developed at Latouche a rather unusual system of mining which, for want of a better name, has been called the "Latouche system of mining." It is a modified form of shrinkage stoping applicable to orebodies of large or fairly large size where the ground is such that timbering would not be required in stoping. Mention has been made of this method of mining by Birchll who gave no details as it had been in use only a short time and the final outcome undetermined. The system, however, has proved to be entirely successful and it is thought that a paper covering it might be of general interest. Before proceeding with a detailed description of the Latouche system a brief description of the property and the various mining methods previously used will be given. Location The Beatson mine of the Kennecott Copper Corpn. is situated on the west coast of Latouche Island, in Prince William Sound, Southwestern Alaska, 45 miles east of Seward, the coast terminus of the U. S. Government Railroad. It is a regular port of call for ships on the Southwestern Alaska run. The island is about 12 miles long and 3 miles wide. A ridge of mountains runs the entire length with a maximum elevation of 2500 feet. Climate Latouche has to contend with possibly the greatest amount of precipitation on the North American continent. The annual average precipitation for the past 4 years has been 188 in., with 248 in. for the year 1926. A rainfall of 4 in. per day is not uncommon. In the winter the thermometer rarely falls below +20° F. and the snowfall is usually heavy during the months of March and April.

In view of various papers and discussion.;, at recent meetings of the Institute, upon testing, methods of testing, inspectors, inspection and specifications, it has occurred to me that my experience of some fifteen years, in the making and enforcement of specifications, in connection with the Motive Power Department of the Pennsylvania Railroad, might give some value to the few suggestions offered in this paper. There is friction, not to say antagonism, between the producers and the consumers of structural materials. On the one hand, the producers complain of the severity of inspection, or the lack of knowledge and want of good judgment on the part of inspectors, and, indeed, have gone so far as to suggest the abolition of the whole scheme of inspecting and testing materials. As part of an effort to provide basic data on the fundamental scientific and engineering principles of minerals beneficiation, the Bureau of Mines is conducting research on the flocculation of mineral fines. This paper presents results of studies using cross-linked starches containing carboxyl, diethanolamine, iminodiacetic acid, and xanthate groups to flocculate hematite, goethite, chromite, manganite, pyrolusite, cuprite, and cassiterite fines. The carboxyl and xanthate derivatives flocculated all minerals except cassiterite; the latter was flocculated by only the diethanolamine derivative. The imlnodiacetic acid derivative flocculated hematite, goethite, chromite, cuprite, and pyrolusite fines. Zeta potential measurements were made to help define the reaction mechanism responsible for flocculation. These measurements indicate that electrostatic attraction probably is not involved, except possibly in the case of the diethanolamine derivative. The separation of hematite from quartz by selective flocculation with chelating crosslinked starches under two pH conditions and with two dispersing agents is described. Best recoveries and grades were found when either the carboxyl or xanthate derivatives was added at the natural pH of the pulp in the absence of a dispersing agent.

In situ extraction for copper, gold and uranium, generally involves several common alternative processes and techniques. These include dump leaching, heap leaching, leaching of fractured ore in-place or bore hole mining and unit operations such as cementation, solvent extraction, ion-exchange or carbon-in-pulp. Since the metallurgical effectiveness and economics of such processes and unit operations are well established, it would be possible to select the optimum alternative for extracting either copper, gold or uranium from their ores using in situ extraction technology. In this paper, efforts have been made to provide metallurgical evaluation as well as capital and operating costs for the various processes and unit operations. Attempts have also been made to utilize the above costs in preparing feasibility studies for in situ extraction of these metals.

Webster, Philadelphia, Pa.: I desire to say that in my first paper (Trans., xxi., 766) the actual ultimates were subtracted from the estimated ultimates, whereas in the paper submitted at this meeting the estimated ultimates are subtracted from the actual, thus giving contrary signs. The latter method corresponds with the direct effect. of low and high finishing-temperatures ; that is, a plus difference indicates low, and a minus difference high, finishing-temperature. I make this explanation to prevent confusion in comparing the two papers. Mr. Sauveur has shown that there is a close relation between the size of the grain and the ultimate strength, and also that the size of the grain depends on the temperature at which the material is finished in rolling, and on the chemical composition of the steel. Philbrook (Cairiegie Institute of Technologyogv—Mr. Slatosky has presented an interesting and constructive paper that represents another step along the way of converting steelmaking from an art to a science. I am confident that his computer will be practical and successful and that with a very few months of experience it will provide a significantly better degree of control than his record of 65 pct of heats within range obtained with the slide-rule calculator . A paper such as this, with a lot of symbols and condensed mathematics, is difficult to comprehend quickly. Since I have had an opportunity to study it carefully, perhaps my evaluation of its validity and accomplishments will save time for others. Mr. Slatosky has correctly used standard principles of stoichiometry and heat balances, which are available to anybody, but he has also brought to them two original contributions: 1) He has developed from operating data some empirical relations for predicting the final FeO content of the slag (at 0.5 pct C end-point) as a function of slag basicity, lance height, and scrap, ore, and scale in the charge. This improves the accuracy of prediction of temperature or scrap requirement compared with assuming an arbitrary, constant FeO content at the end of each heat. There is no assurance yet that exactly the same relations will hold for other furnaces or practices, but similar correlations can be expected. 2) He has combined calculations that are ordinarily carried out laboriously as a number of individual steps into a single, simple linear equation that can readily be fed into a machine. This involved a tremendous amount of painstaking detail work as well as the imagination to see the possibility and work out the steps. While his particular Eqs. [3] and [6] are valid only for the furnace design, charge weight, and blowing time used at Aliquippa Works, only a few numerical values have to be changed to adapt it for other conditions. In order to arrive at a useable solution, Mr. Slatosky had to make some basic assumptions about the process that are similar to those used by others. He neglected variation in some process variables and assumed an arbitrary average value for waste gas analysis and temperature for want of more exact information at the present time. All of these judgments are clearly stated. In addition, some thermody-namic data presently available are not adequate for the job, notably in relation to heats of formation and sensible heat in slag, and some expedient has to be adopted to get around the difficulty. Other people might prefer slightly different judgments about these details and hence obtain somewhat different numerical solutions. This is not of serious importance, however, because the errors accumulate in the "heat loss" term and are largely self-compensating for a constant heat time. Although the extended Eq. l(a) in Appendix I was set up as a rate equation originally, for convenience in using an analogue computer as stated in the paper, the time dependence was removed by later mathematical manipulations and assumptions about the process. The final result is an integration of element and energy balances from initial to final states; this procedure is as legitimate here as in any other form of heat-balance calculation. The formal handling of stoichiometry and thermochemistry appears to be correct, and it is assumed that any arithmetical errors would have come to light in applying the calculations to furnace practice. Mr. Slatosky's approach is not necessarily unique, in that other people might start with apparently different equations or prefer another form of final equation for another type of computer. However, he has presented an accomplished result that appears to be a theoretically sound and practically useful way of applying scientific principles and rapid computation for better control of steelmaking. His success will undoubtedly encourage himself and others to improve on the mathematical model and its use as better informatioq becomes available. John F. Elliott (Massachusetts Institute of Teck-t2ology)-The last comment by Mr. Richards that a calculator is quite unnecessary for an L-D operation ?-equi??es a rebuttal. The L-D furnace is a very high capacity process which places a premium on close control. When one is making steel at rates between 100 and 200 tons per hr, one cannot afford the luxury of an extra 5 or 10 min at the end of a heat correcting for an error that should never have been made in the first place. Mr. Slatosky's paper is a very sound application of the simple principles of stoichiometry and the energy balance. It is a satisfactory and valuable start, but only the start of the development of methods of control for this process. An analysis of the process shows that it should be very suitable to control by a computer. This is especially the case when various grades of steel are to be made. In fact, it would seem that the organizations who are planning new and bigger installations of L-D vessels should consider carefully the advantages that would stem from computer control of a vessel with the operator present to do little more

This paper will discuss an application of multivariate discriminant analysis to aid in predicting mineral potential from regional geological data and information on mineral deposits, with particular emphasis on the use of the logistic discriminant function. Logistic discriminant analysis is a generalization of standard discriminant analysis in that the discriminant analysis becomes applicable under a much wider class of distributions. As a practical example, the standard multiple discriminant analysis and the logistic discriminant analysis are applied to data from the Bathurst area in the Appalachian region of Canada and the results are compared with one another.

JESSE L. JONES,* Pittsburgh, Pa.-I would like to ask Miss Erskine if down-draft has been used in any of the foundries where heavy fumes have to be removed, instead of the overhead draft.? L. -ERSKINE.-The system of overhead draft to remove heavy fumes has been very much more successful. The entire efforts of the New Jersey Department of Labor in regard to stabilizing conditions in the foundry are the result of the physical examination of the foundryman himself on first-hand information as to the prevalence of the minor ailments and the bad timekeeping that naturally accompanies them. These ailments are a factor in not only increasing the labor turnover but in increasing the percentage of bad work as well. The physical exertion of the foundryman himself is of course an important factor. In certain standard shops the amount of energy expended runs from 11 to 13 tons of foot-pounds of energy a day. In certain shops on piece work, I found a record of the energy expended per day to run as high as 22 tons. In one shop, during the war period, the management established a bonus system, and the men increased their output from 60 to 100 molds a day. The result was an increase of some 60 per cent. in output, and an increase of 400 per cent. in defective castings. The question of the physical exertion in the unsanitary foundries, of course, is very much complicated by other factors, for which reason the department has devoted a good deal of attention to estimating what is a reasonable exertion in a sanitary, well ventilated foundry. We have met certain physical difficulties in the brass foundries that the iron foundries did not have. All that information is available through our Bureau of Industrial Information. The question of the physical energy exerted by the molder is found to have a very distinct bearing on the question of contracts, for the possibility of increasing production is balanced by the extra overhead involved. JESSE L. JONES.-I would like to ask if any evidence has been noticed of carbon-monoxid poisoning among the employees of the foundries.

DURING the past four years the experimental work in coal washing carried on by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Washington has been devoted mainly to the development of special methods for the tabling of fine sizes of coals that are difficult to wash. One important outgrowth of this investigation has been the application of hindered-settling classification to coal tabling. Although used for many years in ore dressing, the term "classification" as used here may be new to many readers. It may be defined as the separation obtained when a bed of particles is held in a uniform state of suspension in an upward current of water, either continuous or pulsating, just sufficiently strong to keep the bed in a mobile condition. A common example of this type of separation is a jig in which there is no suction stroke. When the hindered-settling classifier is used with the coal-washing table, the fine-size raw coal, instead of being fed direct to tables, as is the prevailing practice, is first fed to the classifier and grouped, according to the rate of settling against the upward current of water, into perhaps six separate products. After dewatering, each of these except the sixth, a refuse product, is elevated to a seperate feed bin and washed on a separate table. This paper gives a brief discussion of the basis for the use of hindered-settling classification of a table feed; a description of the experimental work; a comparison of the results obtained with and without classification; and a discussion of the application of the classifier in commercial coal washing.

FOLLOWING the passage of resolutions by a num-ber of the western local sections, which have beer printed in previous issues, the Board of Directors appointed a committee consisting of Messrs. Reynders, DeGolyer, Taylor and Merica, to call on the Director of the Budget, and to bring these resolutions to his attention. In response to a request to the committee Mr. Reynders has addressed the following letter to General Lord. In response to a suggestion made in the course of the conference held between you and President DeGolyer of this Institute at Washington on Oct. 6, I present herewith a brief statement of the reasons that have led the mining engineers and metallurgists of this country to urge upon the Government a policy of increasing support from year to year to the United States Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines. While these are not the only technical bureaus to which we look for data and guidance in our work of winning and rendering useful the mineral re-sources of the country, they are the ones on which we chiefly rely and the usefulness of which extends over all the industries which are based on mines and mining. In calling this matter to your attention and to that of the departments in which these bureaus are situated, I am acting on behalf of a special committee appointed by the Board of Directors and which includes men in close and intimate contact with the iron, coal, petroleum, metals and metallurgical industries; men well qualified by experience and position to voice the real feeling of these industries. The subject is not a new one to our Board, which has long kept a watchful eye on the work of the two bureaus as would be natural in that the American Institute of Mining Engineers, represents the largest group of technical men and executives and the one of most wide-spread interest in the American mineral industries. With 9000 members and. 27 local chapters scattered among the mining states, the Institute is in a peculiarly favorable position to know and to set out the feeling among mining men and metal-lurgists as to the proper scope of activities of these Federal bureaus, the quality of their work, and the gaps in knowl-edge that most need filling.

Filtration of hot (60°C) supersaturated zinc sulphate solution (sp gr 1.540) from slimy leach residues at the electrolytic zinc plant of Sullivan Mining Co., Kellogg, Idaho, is described. Separation of liquids and solids in the finished leach is by Burt filters modified to meet conditions of high-acid, high-density process for electrolytic zinc. Operating characteristics of the Burt filter on this pulp are presented.

ORGANIZATION of The Federated American Engineering Societies was effected at the organizing conference of national, local, state and regional engineering and allied technical organizations at the Cosmos Club, Washington, D. C., June 3 and 4. Thus is brought into being the greatest national engineering society in the world. The object of the organization is to further the interests of the public through the use of technical knowledge and engineering experience, and to consider and act upon matters common to engineering and allied technical professions. Prominent engineers from all parts of the country, representing more than 75 engineering societies, with an aggregate membership of more than 125,000, participated in the organization. The constitution as adopted by the conference, calls for the creation of s managing body to be known as the American Engineering Council, and its executive board. The belief was expressed that the entire organization would come to be spoken of as the American Engineering Council. The council is to coordinate the activities of state councils and of local affiliations whenever these activities are of national or general importance or may affect the general interests of engineers. Representation in the council is to be according to membership of the component societies.

Uranium-base alloys exposed to high temperature water fail either by uniform oxidation or by sudden cracking and disintegration of the metal. The disintegration results from the oxidation of a second phase which is precipitated during the corrosion process. The precipitate has been identified as a metastable hydride of uranium. URANIUM-BASE alloys consisting of the body-centered-cubic ? phase are susceptible to two different modes of corrosion failure when exposed to high temperature water. In the first process, a smooth oxide film is formed on the metal surface which continually flakes off during exposure and results in a uniform weight loss of the specimen. The oxide is present as a thin, adherent layer whose thickness remains approximately constant. As the metal oxidizes during corrosion, a nonadherent layer is built up on this film and continually sloughs off. Coincident with the uniform corrosion just mentioned, another process occurs which eventually leads to failure of the metal by cracking and general disintegration. The failure takes place during a relatively short time compared to the total exposure. To distinguish this type of failure from the uniform corrosion, the cracking or disintegration of the metal will be referred to as discontinuous failure. For the ? phase uranium alloys it is discontinuous failure rather than uniform corrosion that limits the useful corrosion life of the alloy. This paper will be concerned primarily with the mechanism of discontinuous failure. Physical Changes During Corrosion—The alloys used in this investigation were ? phase uranium alloys containing 7 to 12 wt pet Mo or Cb. The preparation of the alloys, the method of corrosion testing, and the actual corrosion results are presented in another paper.' The ? quenching treatment consists of annealing the alloy for 24 hr at 900°C in a sealed Vycor glass tube filled with helium and then water quenching to room temperature without breaking the tube. The corrosion behavior typical of a ? phase uranium alloy is shown in Fig. 1. This specimen was a U-12 wt pet Mo alloy tested in pressurized, degassed water at 650°F. The corrosion rate was practically constant at 0.28 mg per sq cm per hr or increased slightly until about 15 to 20 days of exposure, when the onset of discontinuous failure occurred in this particular sample, and the specimen soon began to crack and disintegrate. The simultaneous increase in the observed corrosion rate is a result of the increased area of exposure due to cracking of the specimen. The microstructure of a specimen that failed by cracking is shown in Fig. 2. The presence of a plate-like precipitate can readily be seen. Metallographic examination of corrosion specimens reveals that the onset of discontinuous failure is always preceded by the formation of a plate-like second phase in the ? uranium matrix. Hydrogen analyses of specimens periodically withdrawn from corrosion test reveal that the hydrogen content of the alloy increases on exposure to the high temperature water, as shown in Fig. 3. The hydrogen is available as a corrosion product resulting from the formation of UO2 by the reaction of the alloy with water. Specimens analyzed just prior to discontinuous failure contained as much as 1200 ppm H, whereas the plate-like phase appears to precipitate out at a hydrogen concentration of between 10 and 25 ppm. The observed increase in hydrogen content prior to and during the formation of the plate-like precipitate suggests that this constituent may be a hydride of uranium. Additional evidence linking the identity of this phase to a hydride is that it can be removed by vacuum annealing at temperatures of 100°C and above. Decomposition products of the ? phase would certainly not dissolve at such temperatures, nor could other likely products of corrosion, such as oxides, be dissipated at any of the test temperatures. The precipitation and growth of the second phase during corrosion is accompanied by an increase in hardness of the specimen. Discussion of the paper of WALTHER MATHESIUS, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 99, March, 1915, pp. 539 to 555. JOSEPH W. RICHARDS, So. Bethlehem, Pa.-This paper answers. partly the difficult questions which have come up as to why it is not economical to use higher blast temperatures in the smelting of Mesaba ores, such as the high temperatures used in European practices, and the answer is very plain that the ores will not stand the higher temperature. But the paper does not go into detail as to what special difficulties were found with the higher temperature of blast, and I would ask the author to kindly specify them. W. A. FORBES, New York, N. Y.-A large part of the troubles that furnace men experienced in using high-blast heats in smelting Mesaba ores in the early days of using Mesaba ores, was clue to the attempt to use these soft ores on furnaces having the same lines as the furnaces used in smelting the hard Old Range ores. As the result of observation and study, the dimensions of the lower part of the blast furnaces have been changed and the difficulties of the blast-furnace men in operating with a large percentage of Mesaba ore and high-blast temperatures have been largely overcome. The changes I refer to in particular are: (1) steepening the angle of the bosh; (2), decreasing the height of the bosh; (3) increasing the diameter of the hearth. JOSEPH W. RICHARDS.-Mr. Forbes's answer is quite satisfactory, and the moral which it points is that when the furnace is run with a higher temperature in the smelting zone, the furnace lines which were adapted for the lower temperatures are not necessarily those best suited for the higher hearth temperatures. If. enriched blast were used in a furnace, and higher temperatures run, it would be found necessary to further modify the lines of the furnace to meet the new conditions and to get the maximum output with economy. J. E. JOHNSON, JR., New York, N. Y.-It seems to me this is one of the few papers which could well have been a little longer. The data which Mr. Mathesius has given us, I think should be considered in connection with the paper which Mr. Brassert read before the American Iron and Steel Institute last spring, in which he described how they had obtained remarkable results with furnaces with steep but very short boshes; the angles have been raised to 80°, and the boshes made so short that they no longer appear as a conspicuous part of the shape of the furnace.

Instantaneous outbursts of coal in underground workings have occurred frequently in various coal fields in Nova Scotia; British Columbia; Canada; South Staffordshire, England; and the states of Washington, Virginia, West Virginia and eastern Kentucky in the United States. Such outbursts in eastern Kentucky have been called "mountain bumps " because they are more likely to occur under mountain cover than elsewhere, but recently they have become generally known as "coal bumps." The eastern Kentucky coal field has been troubled by these outbursts since 1923. Many men have been injured and killed, and the morale of the workmen in the vicinity of such outbursts has been affected to such an extent that mine production has suffered for a considerable period following each outburst. Such phenonlenal occurrence in any coal field naturally has led to discussion as to the cause and means of prevention. In the eastern Kentucky field, local mine officials, workmen, mining engineers, and many others have offered many ideas as to the cause and many methods of prevention have been suggested, and tried without success. Some of the plans were either practically or economically unsound and in general impossible to follow. To enumerate all the suggestions would require a large volume. One cause mentioned was that they might be due to gas under high pressure, as in Lower Silesian mines, and the remedy reeommcnded was to drain the gas by drilling holes into a suspected area. A hole 30 ft. long was drilled into a 60-ft. pillar to allow the gas to drain off, hut the pillar bumped the next day. Realizing the importance of obtaining the best information available on coal bumps, the writer, with the permission of the Harlan County Coal Operators' Assoeiation, invited Mr. George S. The extreme difficulty of obtaining a short and, at the same time, exact method for the determination of gold and silver in copper-materials has been well illustrated in "Assays of Copper and Copper-Matte," and its discussion, by Dr. A. R. Ledoux and other leading authorities on this subject.* Two general methods were used by the numerous assayers who took part in the symposium initiated by Dr. Ledoux, and whose results are given in the paper and discussion. One of these is the dry or fire-method, consisting of scorification and cupellation, the former being repeated if the percentage of copper is very high, all slags and cupels being assayed and the results so obtained added to the ordinary assay; and the copper retained by the silver buttons being determined and deducted from the combined weight of the buttons obtained from the assay of the original material, the scorification-slag, and the cupel. The other is the wet or combination-method, which, while not involving so much work, requires a longer time. Briefly, it is as follows : The material to be assayed is dissolved in nitric acid, the solution is diluted, and the fine undissolved gold is collected by means of sulphate of lead, formed by the addition of lend acetate and sulphuric acid to the solution, After standing from 12 to 24 hours, the precipitate is filtered off, and the silver in the filtrate is precipitated as a chloride or bromide, and collected by means of sulphate or bromide of lead. The solution containing this precipitate in suspension is again allowed to stand until the precipitate has settled. It is then filtered; both precipitates, containing the gold and silver, are dried, ignited and scorified, either separately or together, and the result is cupelled in the usual way.

Since the beginning of the year 1928 the senior authors and their associates have applied a series of procedures which makes possible the detailed study in situ of the formations traversed by a drill hole before the casing has been landed. They have given the name "electrical coring" to the ensemble of these processes, which now replace in a large measure the mechanical coring performed by the drillers, and permit the gathering of bottom-hole data hitherto unobtainable. Three years have elapsed since the technique and interpretation of these measurements emerged from the experimental stage and entered the field of industrial application on a large scale. The total length of drill holes so far surveyed by the authors and their associates, all over the world, amounts to several millions of feet. Practical and strongly built equipment has been evolved, which permits the examination in a short time of an open hole several thousand feet long. No comprehensive paper has yet been published discussing the essential principles of the processes applied and bringing into evidence their economic interest. This is the object of the present paper.' Numerous examples of field work performed under varied geological conditions are given, constituting a concrete illustration of the services rendered by the new methods. The study in situ of the formations penetrated by a drill hole is based on the measurement of a given physical factor or parameter associated with these formations. Generally the measurements are made systematically along the whole length of the open hole. The physical factors , or parameters which are now utilized by us to this end are: (1) the resistivities of the rocks; (2) their porosity; (3) their electrical anisotropy; (4) their temperature; (5) the resistivity of the muds.
