Much work has been done recently on the lead-antimony system' in connection with lead-rich alloys of commercial importance containing less than 20 per cent. antimony. Dean, Zickrick and Nix have called attention to the perpetuation in the literature of several erroneous data, such as a eutectic temperature of 228° C. at 12.5 per cent. antimony, instead of 247° at 13 per cent. The series is given as a classic example of a straight eutectiferous series in such late books as those of Heyn and Grossmann,2 Jeffries and Archer,3 Guillet and Portevin,4 Pulsifer,5 Rosenhain,6 and Liddell,7 as well as the somewhat earlier works of Hofman (1918), Wang (1909), and Williams (1920). The work of Dean has definitely shown a solid solution of antimony in lead at about 2.5 per cent. antimony. While lecturing to a class in general metallurgy at the University of Idaho, the writer had the students prepare a series of lead-antimony alloys for the purpose of illustrating methods of thermal analysis. W. D. Haentjens (Barrett, Haentjens and Co., Hazleton, Pa.) — The authors are to be complimented on undertaking a project which has little available experimental data. There are so many variables in the hydraulic transport of solid materials that it is difficult to correlate the experimental information from one series of tests into usable data involving other materials or even similar materials but of different size consists. The friction data is of particular interest to those involved in pipeline design. Most such pipelines, however, involve portions which are not level and the effect of sloping or vertical lines might also be considered in extensions of this test work. Pump manufacturers are concerned about criticism resulting from the stated amount of degradation occurring in a pump. The amount of degradation is affected somewhat by pump design and this should be taken into consideration. The pump which was loaned for this work was a modification of a standard medium duty slurry pump. This modification was for maximum particle size, however if minimum degradation is the object, then other design changes would be indicated. Although there is a tendency to be less concerned with degradation in industrial applications, it is nevertheless an important factor in many uses and further studies should be made. In particular, the amount of degradation could possibly be segregated into more classifications, rather than charge some losses to the pump which apparently are occurring in other handling. It seems difficult to evaluate the degradation which occurs in handling the coal into the pump sump and in removing it from the line into the tank. Each handling, of course, contributes some degradation, as does the screening operation itself. These are all charged to the pump, or to the pipe line and pump together; and, although they may be small, they could possibly be evaluated. It is interesting to note the verification of the old rule of thumb of maximum particle size equal to approximately one-third of the pipe size. Our experience has shown size distribution to have an effect on the flow characteristics and if this data is available for the tests which were run, it would be interesting supplementary information. Orning (Authors' Reply) — In this paper the authors have attempted to outline some of the major factors affecting a rational design for a solids-liquid transport system. They are grateful to Mr. Haentjens for pointing out several other equally important considerations. Pump manufacturers, in general, should be complimented on the strides that have been made in decreasing particle degradation within the pump. Considerable research and a great deal of mathematical analysis is required before pump design in this field can become a science rather than an art, for each system requires a different set of compromises. As Mr. Haentjens indicates, maximum-particle-size handling capability may be inconsistent with minimum degradation; even more important, the rotor profile for the most efficient transfer of energy to the fluid may have to be compromised to reduce particle breakage, for, whenever particle density differs from fluid density, the two phases will have different trajectories. Some evidence of this geometric factor is provided by a cursoy analysis in the Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations now in preparation, where it is indicated that, for the pump used, degradation decreased when the tangential velocity was decreased and when the radial velocity was increased. This relation, itself, is probably a function of particle size and concentration. Some data on particle size distribution, as requested by Mr. Haentjens, will be provided in the Report of Investigations referred to above in addition to that already presented in Table II of the original paper. However, in the limited number of tests it is difficult to distinguish between cause and effect, for not only did the particle size distribution alter the flow characteristics, but, through the medium of degradation, the operating conditions rapidly altered the particle size distribution.

During World War II the Pocos de Caldas bauxite deposits of Minas Gerais in Brazil yielded some 60,000 tons. Since then they have maintained a small but almost continuous production. Known for many years, the deposits have been reconnoitered by a number of geologists,1-4 but no dimensional study has been possible because there have not been enough exposures to show clearly the depth, bedrock, and habit of occurrence. The deposits are somewhat unorthodox in their occurrence mainly on steep slopes of mountainous terrain. Although the parent rocks are a sequence of alkalic intrusions that bauxitize readily under the proper conditions, bauxitization has not been the dominant weathering process in the area. It is limited to certain localities where important volumes of bauxite have formed by laterization of several rock types, each yielding a distinctive type of bauxite. Bauxitization may be observed in several stages and in both direct and indirect cycles of formation. The deposits are unique in being of demonstrably recent age, so that the conditions under which the bauxite formed are essentially those of the present time. The bauxitization sequence is postulated in Fig. 1.

THE history of the froth flotation of coal is relatively short. The flotation process was applied to fine-coal cleaning about the time of the end of World War I. Coal flotation finds more widespread use in Europe than in the United States and is used on a commercial scale in nearly all major coal-producing countries in the world. In Fig. 1 the general arrangement of a froth-flotation plant at a British colliery is shown. GENERAL FEATURES OF THE PROCESS Application The flotation process is applicable to the cleaning of the fine sizes, particularly minus 48-mesh coal, although it may be used on sizes as coarse as % in. Since most cleaning processes usually are not effective on sizes smaller than 48-mesh and certainly not effective on minus 100¬mesh, the froth-flotation process offers a solution to the problem of cleaning these sizes. This process consists of agitating the feed pulp with a small amount of reagents, usually 1.0 to 91/ lb. per ton of feed in the presence of water and air; the reagents help to form small bubbles that collect on the particles having a greater affinity for the bubble surface than for the water surface, in this case the fine coal, and the bubbles buoy these particles to the surface to form the froth or concentrate. Slate and shale particles remain wetted and suspended in the water to be drawn off as tailing. The frothers commonly used in coal flotation are cresylic acid, pine oil, and alcohols. More expensive frothers, used in ore flotation, work satisfactorily but do not compare with these cheaper reagents for over-all cost. Collectors used are low-grade petroleum fractions, such as cheap, partly refined fuel oil, or lubricating oil, sometimes mixed with small amounts of kerosene. With a growth of 718 per cent in the petroleum industry from 1901 to 1931, there was a corresponding increase in the demand for technically trained men in the industry. This was first met by increasing numbers of college graduates from the old established courses in chemistry, geology and engineering. However, a need began to be felt for scientists and engineers specially trained for the petroleum industry. In 1912 the University of Pittsburgh established the first department in any university in the world that offered major work in petroleum engineering and petroleum geology. In Europe, the first major work in petroleum engineering was offered in England in 1913 at the University of Birmingham. The University of California and Stanford University offered major work in petroleum engineering in 1915. Since that time at least 10 other American universities and colleges have offered major work and at least 12 others are now offering some courses dealing with petroleum and the petroleum industry.

During 1965, a new stoping method was developed at the Bunker Hill Mine at Kellogg, Idaho to enable the profitable mining of a large low-grade zinc orebody. This method, called the Bunker Hill pillar system, incorporates the use of the air-powered Atlas Copco T2GH or CAVO 310 as the prime production component. The method and equipment proved highly successful and was the first step in mechanizing what had been a classic example of a square-set and horizontal cut-and-fill operation. Since that time there has been a realization that the small rubber-tired type of loader could be effectively used to advantage in increasing productivity and decreasing costs in many different stoping and development applications throughout the mine. The net result since 1967 has been that a large and increasing portion of the mine production and an increasing share of the development is being done with small rubber-tired loaders. Presently, ten Atlas Copco T2GH and six CAVO 310 air-operated loaders are in use, having replaced the time-honored slusher which was first introduced into the Bunker Hill Mine in about 1898 in the form of a slip scraper. The recent advent of diesel powered loaders in the one yard size range has in 1970 further accelerated the trend toward rubber-tired mobile equipment at the Bunker Hill Mine. Although The Bunker Hill Company is using small diesel loaders of several different types and manufactures for inclines, declines and level development and will undoubtedly find stoping applications for this equipment, .the bulk of this paper will be confined to the use of the air-operated loader, leaving the diesel equipment to a future presentation. As a response to rapidly growing specialization in various branches of metallurgy, it is proposed that undergraduate education in metallurgical engineering should be built up around four principal scientific themes: 1—thermodynamics, 2—structure, 3—mechanics, and 4-—rate processes. THE following quotation from a recent article by von Bertalanffyl describes very well the situation which today challenges curriculum designers in all branches of science and engineering: "Modern scientific education is presented with a well known dilemma. The amount of facts in modern science, and in any of its smallest branches, is enormous. Life in general, and the academic curriculum in particular, is short. The abundance of factual data, as well as the intricacy of modern scientific techniques, experimental and theoretical, necessitates utmost specialization. This specialization, unavoidable though it is, involves serious danger for both the education of the scientist and the social function of science. "In so far as the advancement of science is concerned, history shows that interconnection of different fields and problems is a most important basis of progress. Many of the paramount achievements of science arose on borderlines, and from the synthesis of formerly separate fields . . ." Specialization in subfields of metallurgy has become a serious educational problem only in about the last decade. The growth in specialization, almost as a necessity, has paralleled the rapid growth in metallurgical knowledge during this period. Moreover, in planning future educational policies, the educator must be concerned not only with the rate of increase in metallurgical knowledge and with the concomitant rate of increase in specialization, but also with the second derivatives, that is, with the rates of increase of the rates of increase. These second derivatives are positive and large; the growths being dealt with are self-catalyzing, or like a chain reaction. As a measure of specialization, the length of the list of different kinds of metallurgies can be considered, the kinds of metallurgy which represent one person's particular interests and those of other practicing metallurgists. To start with, there are physical metallurgy, process metallurgy, and mineral dressing, then mechanical metallurgy, metal processing, foundry metallurgy, corrosion, solid state physics, high temperature metallurgy, welding, powder metallurgy, nuclear metallurgy, etc. Each of these fields is growing so rapidly that any one metallurgist can hope at best to keep up to date in only one or two. What is the impact of all these "metallurgies" on metallurgical education and metallurgical curricula? In answering this question, it can be said, first, that educators have resisted fairly well the temptations to split up metallurgy, with different curricula, different options, degrees with different labels, and the like—degrees are still given in plain Metallurgy and Metallurgical Engineering. In other ways, though, the pressures of specialization have had noticeable effects. AERIAL photographic surveying and mapping is not new or unknown to geologists. However, it has been utilized but little before, principally because it is only within the last few months that practical means of adapting this method to the requirements of petroleum companies have been discovered. No American aerial survey company has taken up aerial surveying and mapping as an engineering service to be offered to petroleum companies and their geologists for use in undeveloped and jungle-covered petroleum areas. This method of surveying and mapping, however, is used by the War Department, the U. S. Reclamation Service, and Geological Survey, and the corresponding Departments of the Canadian Government. ADVANTAGES OF AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHIC SURVEYING AND MAPPING The advantages of aerial photographic surveying and mapping to petroleum companies and their geologists are many. One of the most valuable is presented in the very first phase, or the exploration period. It is assumed that, when convinced that petroleum possibilities are present, a petroleum company has secured a concession of 8000 sq. mi. of unexplored area in Eastern Venezuela. The company may either have the entire area surveyed and mapped by the aerial photographic method, or send its chief field geologist up in an airplane so that he, from-an aerial reconnaissance, may reject certain portions that, for geological reasons, the company would not be interested in. He will then point out the regions that are to be surveyed and mapped. After the air-work is completed, the results are brought down, developed, and printed; then the resulting "contact prints" are given to the field geologist. They may be roughly assembled to give a general idea of the property in its entirety, or they are in shape to be examined in adjoining pairs under the stereo-scope. With this instrument, the geologist is enabled to make a minute examination of surface indications. The work of assembling and constructing a complete general or detailed map, according to the scales desired by the petroleum company and for the later office use, is continued by the aerial photographic company.

Through the generosity of Sir Robert Hadfield, Honorary Member, the Directors of the American Institute of Mining Engineers are enabled to announce the Hadfield Research Prize of $1,000 for the best contribution to the publications of the Institute upon the general subject of The Different Forms and Combinations of Carbon with Iron, including those in Iron Alloys. The prize will be awarded at the Annual Meeting of the Institute in February, 1916, to the best paper upon this subject which is presented to the Institute before Nov. 1, 1915, provided such paper is deemed worthy by the Institute's Iron and Steel Committee. The following suggestions are also added for the guidance of those who may take part in this research. While' it is not desired to define closely the exact lines or scope of the proposed research, as it is advisable to make these as broad as possible, the object in mind maybe said to be generally as follows: To elaborate and find out the best methods of determining the forms of carbon in steel or iron, including those in iron alloys. A portion of the work would probably be a continuation of the researches which have in the past been carried out by Jullien, Abel, Muller, Ledebur, T. Sterry Hunt, Akerman, Arnold, Stead, E. D. Campbell, Hogg, Parry, Upton, and others. In a generic way, metallurgists now speak of carbides, sub-carbides, double carbides, special carbides, and other combinations. It is very desirable that these should be accurately defined and understood. It is also desirable to know whether there are other or new forms; if so, can these be separated and their characteristics obtained. It may be interesting to point out that the carbon compounds now definitely known are stated to number over 80,000. It is very probable, therefore, that there is room for much valuable and useful research to be carried out with the object of increasing our knowledge of the various combinations of carbon with iron, as probably some of these are still unknown

THE airborne geophysicist is a busy man these days. In his plane he may have the airborne magnetometer, the airborne scintillation counter, and the airborne electromagnetic surveying system. Each of these is an independent tool, but all require additional auxiliary equipment for locating the aircraft in space: recording altimeters and Shoran or aerial cameras. Now there is still another piece of equipment, the airborne magnetic gradiometer, an accessory to the magnetometer. To understand its uses, consider the function of the magnetometer itself. Aside from detecting magnetic ore, the airborne magnetometer finds greatest use in spotting intrusions of igneous material. Where there is enough contrast in magnetic susceptibility of igneous rock and adjacent formations, it outlines the intrusion. Certain minerals also influence the magnetometer directly, but with the exception of magnetite and possibly one or two others, their effect is weak and can be detected only when there is sufficient ore and the magnetometer flight passes very close to it. An igneous intrusion of infinite depth with vertical sides is represented on a magnetometer record by an anomaly, as in Fig. 1. Amplitude of the high depends on susceptibility contrast of the igneous rock. Generally speaking, the edge of the intrusion lies below the point of inflection of the curve, and this point, where the curvature changes from positive to negative on the magnetometer profile, would be near A in Fig. 1, with a counterpart, of course, on the other side. Location of the contact is one of the principal objects of the survey, but finding the precise point is not always easy, as inspection of the curve near A will show. Mineralization is often found at the contact zones, as at B. Magnetic effects, if detected, may be small, as in B', and when superimposed on the anomaly due to the instrusion they are very difficult to discern and analyze. Furthermore, if these small fluctuations are to be perceived by the magnetometer the vertical scale should be large. This increases the slopes of the anomaly and makes detection of small deviations and inflection points even more difficult. The airborne magnetic gradiometer was designed to help overcome these difficulties. What it presents is the first derivative of the magnetometer record with respect to time, that is to say, the slope at any point. Fig. 2 represents an actual magnetometer record (solid line) with the corresponding gradiometer record (dashed line) superimposed. Both records read from right to left. Vertical lines on the original magnetometer record are automatic steps designed to keep the pen from going off scale. The slope of any curve is greatest at the point of inflection or point where the curvature changes sign, and this point is a maximum (or minimum) on the gradi- ometer. The chief advantage of the gradiometer is that maxima or minima are much easier to see and to locate precisely; hence an accurate location for the point of inflection can easily be found. Note that points C and D are more sharply defined than C and D'. Similarly the small fluctuations of the original record, so important to the interpreter, are far more clearly shown at E, F, and G, than on the original record at E', F', and G'. Though not necessarily highs and lows on the gradiometer, they do show up clearly what would take a painstaking analysis to detect on the original magnetometer record. Will the gradiometer have a particular configuration which indicates an orebody? Not necessarily. The total intensity curve, or original magnetometer record, can display an orebody in various ways, depending on dimensions, orientation, latitude, and composition, as well as on direction, flight height, and instrumental sensitivity of the traverse. Where the total intensity can take on so many different shapes the gradiometer must vary too. It is generally recognized that interpretation of total intensity magnetometer records requires an expert analysis; the gradiometer can be of considerable assistance to the expert but it does not replace him. Mechanism of the gradiometer is simple. A Leeds & Northrup recorder in the aircraft records the magnetic gradient simultaneously with the total intensity, which is on another recorder. Fiducial marks are put on both records simultaneously and the speed of the paper through the recorders is kept the same on both. This makes it possible to place one record over the other for direct comparison. In the laboratory the flights are positioned on a map. Maximum and minimum points on the gradiometer, which can then be posted on the map at their proper locations, may be expected to fall along a trend crossing the direction of flight. Trends should indicate the edge of an intrusion, or some other important features, and when superimposed on the total intensity contour map help greatly to locate the points of inflection, or line of zero curvature.

This paper presents a technique for calculating the original amount of hydrocarbon in place in a petroleum reservoir, and for determining the constants characterizing the aquifer performance, based on pressure-production data. A method for doing this based on a least-squares line-fitting computationwus proposed by vanEverdingen,Timmerman andMcMahon in 1953. We found that their method would not work when there is error in the reservoir pressure data — even moderate error. The technique presented here appears to give reasonable answers when pressure data are uncertain to the degree expected in reservoir pressure determinations. The major change introduced in the present analysis is to limit the least-squares line-fitting to yield only one constant— the amount of hydrocarbon in place. The water-influx constant is then taken as proportional to the oil (or gas) in place. The constant of proportionality can be computed from estimates of effective compressibility and reservoir water saturation. It is also pointed out that the commonly used least-squares analysis assumes all of the uncertainty to be in the dependent variable. The material balance should be arranged so that this condition is fulfilled if correct inferences are to be made from statistical calculations. Examples are shown of the application of the new technique to gas reservoirs—both hypothetical and real—and to the oil-reservoir example of van Ever-dingen, Timmerman and McMahon. INTRODUCTION The amount of hydrocarbon originally in place in a petroleum resenroir can be estimated by means of the material-balance calculation. Simultaneous observations of pressure and amounts of produced fluids are required, together with the PVT data applicable to the reservoir fluids. If water encroachment is occurring, it is desirable to try to infer the behavior of the aquifer, as well as the original hydrocarbon in place, from the pressure-production data. This imposes additional demands on the method of calculation, and uncertainty in the data can result in large uncertainty in the answer. In addition, if the size of a gas cap is to be established, the whole problem becomes indeterminate, as pointed out by Woods and Muskat.1 Brownscombe and Collins2 simulated a gas reservoir and its aquifer on a reservoir analyzer and derived quantitative information on the effect of uncertainty in pressure and aquifer permeability on computed gas in place. Among the various techniques of estimating the performance of an aquifer, the method of van Ever-dingen and Hurst? based on compressible flow theory, seems to have been the most generally successful (see Ref. 4, for example). In this paper we shall confine ourselves to their representation of the aquifer. In 1953,' van Everdingen, Timmerman and McMahon5 introduced a statistical technique for deriving the amount of oil originally in place and the parameters which describe the aquifer. (We shall refer to this technique as the "VTM method'', as suggested by Mueller.6) Their example reservoir had no gas cap. It has been our experience that the VTM method gives a reasonable answer when the data are very accurate, but that inaccuracy (particularly in pressure) can cause the method to break down. The effect was first observed in gas reservoirs, but has since been seen in oil reservoirs also. In this paper we present another statistical method which has been successful in achieving a reasonable answer where the VTM method has failed. In the new method, one less parameter is derived from material-balance computations. It is assumed that values can be established for effective compressibility in the aquifer and reservoir water saturation independently of the material-balance calculation. The water-influx constant can then be obtained from these data and the quantity of hydrocarbon in place.

Purification of solutions can involve various treatment methods. In the normal sequence of metals recovery by hydrometallurgy, the ore is initially prepared for leaching by grinding to the desired optimum mesh size as dictated by the leaching parameters. Following leaching and liquids- solids separation, the resultant solution is ready for purification. The use, or introduction of solvent extraction into a plant, can be either a major or a minor part of the metal recovery process as shown by the following list where solvent extraction is normally considered: a) recovery of a metal by a simple leaching of the broken ore, e.g., copper from dump leaching where there are only the three main steps of leaching, solvent extraction, and electrowinning (1);

A premature explosion might be described as an explosion that, occurs before the miner expects it. Notwithstanding that it is unexpected, a premature is generally within the miner's control. A hangfire explosion is a blast that occurs after the miner expects it,, and in all instances, except where the explosives or blasting accessories are defective, hangfire explosions are within the miner's control. Causes of Premature Explosions Generally, there are seven methods of shot-firing in anthracit,e mines; namely: (1) cap and fuse with dynamite, (2) fuse with pellet powder, (3) squib with black powder or pellets, (4) exploders and delays with dynamite or black powder, (5) exploders with dynamite, (6) delay ignitors with black powder or pellets, (7) electric squibs with black powder or pellets. Cap and Fuse.—This method of firing seems to produce the greatest number of premature explosions. This is not solely because of the method, but is the result of mispractices which are possible with this method of firing. The two most common mispractices followed with cap-and-fuse blasting are the firing of multiple holes and the use of short fuse.. In the firing of multiple holes by cap and fuse, investigations have shown that in nearly every instance where the miner was injured by this method of firing he remained too long at the face lighting the several fuses, so that the first shot went off before he could reach a place of safety. Such accidents could have been avoided either by accurate judgment by the miner of the relative lengths of the fuses or by the use of electric firing. Rules exist in nearly every mine forbidding the lighting of more than one hole at a time where the cap-and-fuse method of firing is practiced. Where it is desirable to fire more than one hole at a, time, electric firing should be used. It is difficult to understand why so many premature explosions result from the use of short fuses, inasmuch as the cost of fuse is practically a negligible item in the expense of a day's work. Notwithstanding this, however, we frequently find miners using short lengths of fuse in an effort to save one or two cents per hole, or about 15 to 20 # in a day. A practice

IT is a somewhat curious circumstance that the newest of the Institute's several awards should be conferred in the oldest of our several professional fields-for there is little question that geology and mining have antedated metallurgy and petroleum. Perhaps so did geophysics. After all, one geophysical instrument, the magnetic compass, has been success- fully employed for many centuries. Young in years the Jackling Award may be, but in distinction-whether in terms of the title it bears or in terms of the first three medalists (Reno Sales, E. D. Gardner, and the late Father Mace1wane)-the Jackling Award is already one of the ranking awards of the Institute. The name of the 1957 medalist will bring added luster to an already illustrious roll.

AT the meeting of the Committee on Engineering A Education of the Institute at the New York meeting last February, it was brought out that the number of men graduating in mining engineering from our colleges at the present time is not sufficient to meet the ordinary needs of the mineral industries. Following the meeting, Samuel S. Wyer, consulting engineer of the Fuel-Power Transportation Educational Foundation of Columbus, Ohio, prepared a pamphlet called "Mining Engineering's Appeal to High School Seniors." Under the auspices of this Foundation the pamphlet is being sent to every high school in the United States. The pamphlet does not in any way paint glowing word pictures of the profession; rather it is a statement of the importance of mining engineering in our present-day civilization, together with the requirements in young men who are looking forward to an engineering career.
