The stored and expended energies of an Au-Ag alloy deformed in torsion were investigated as functions of strain, strain rate, and temperature. At room temperature, the stored energy, measured by tin solution calorimetry, increased linearly up to an intermediate strain, above which it was nearly constant; at 78 °K the relation was linear up to fracture. Approximate values of the energy stored at 4 OK indicate a rapid increase below 78 OK. The energy stored by specimens deformed successively at 4o and 78oK changed slowly with increasing second strain from the curve for energy stored at 4 OK (measured after annealing at 78oK) to that for deformation at 78°K. The ratios of the stored to the expended energy at room temperature and 78 oK were unusually large. The additional amount of energy stored at the lower temperature is attributed mainly to an increase in the number and energy of dislocations. The stored energy as a function of strain rate at 4oK (measured after annealing at 78oK) increased to a sharp maximum over a narrow range of strain rates, whereas the expended energy changed only slightly. These effects are explained by the generation of point defects resulting from the enforced nonconservative movement of jogs in fast moving screw dislocations. The effect of straining successively at two strain rates at 4oK was also investigated. Stress-strain curves for 4o, 78oK, and room temperature and the results of micro examination of specimens deformed at these temperatures are also reported. THIS investigation is a continuation of a research program primarily concerned with the effects of variables on the energy relations involved in the deformation of metals. The variables investigated in earlier work have included strain, strain rate, temperature of deformation (room temperature and 78oK), and the type of deformation process. Most of this work has been carried out with Au-Ag alloys. In the investigation reported here, the deformation process was torsion, which had not been used previously in the program. The stored and expended energies involved in the deformation process were measured as functions of strain, strain rate and the temperature of deformation in the range 4" to 373" K. The microhardness and microstructure of deformed specimens were also investigated. The relation between stored energy and strain differs for different deformation processes.1,2 In general, the stored energy increases with strain and may attain a nearly constant value at large strains. This value and the rate at which it is reached, however, depend on the process of deformation. This dependence has been attributed, at least in part, to differences in the effective strain rate and rise in temperature of the specimen during deformation. The effects of the temperature of deformation on both the stored energy and the energy expended in the working process have been the subject of only a few investigations.3-6 Values of these quantities at low temperatures are of special interest as they yield information on point defects which, for many metals, is not obtainable at higher temperatures. The effect of the strain rate on the stored and expended energies has received little attention The strain rate has usually been measured only in relative terms, and hence the interpretation of its effect on the stored energy has been mainly comparative.

During recent years the use of lithium has expanded greatly in industrial, chemical, and metallurgical fields, while at the same time modernized methods of mining and refining lithium have increased production. Technical literature includes many papers describing the geology and mineralogy of lithium deposits. Mining and beneficiating problems, however, have not been thoroughly described. Published reports have failed to emphasize that one of the chief reasons lithium minerals were not extensively mined until recently is the difficulty of beneficiation. Four lithium minerals of pegmatites and the lithium-sodium-phosphate byproduct from the brines at Searles Lake, Calif., have been sources of lithium. Among the pegmatite minerals, only spodumene and petaline are known to occur in deposits large enough to support large tonnage operations. Spodumene, a lithium-aluminum-silicate, is the principal lithium mineral mined in the U. S.

POSTSCRIPT.*-Since the publication of my paper upon the blackening of the surface of rocks in desert regions, I have noted that similar views of the origin of superficial discoloration in the case of certain rocks from the Salt Lake basin of Utah have been expressed by Prof. George P. Merrill. In the pamphlet, he described the brown-coated weathered boulders from Tooele county, reaching the conclusion that the discoloration was due to the solution of the manganese and iron compounds 'in the interior of the boulder, while they were in the water, and the gradual bringing of this material to the surface through capillarity and its oxidation when exposed.

COMPARED to many of the binary alloys of iron, Fe-Ir alloys have received very little tud.'' Virtually nothing is known about the Fe-Ir equilibrium diagram' except for a few details concerning the liquidus-solidus positions for dilute iron-based alloys. It is reported1 that the y to a transformation temperature in Fe-Ir alloys (up to 40 wt pct Ir) is composition-dependent, varying from -900°C for pure iron to 0" to 100°C for Fe-40 pct Ir in an almost linear manner. The y to a transformation appears to be reversible,' the transformation hysteresis width increasing with increasing iridium content. In a qualitative way, the composition dependence of the y to a (and vice versa) transformations appears similar to those in the widely studied Fe-Ni system. Despite its inherent low Btu content, western coal's low sulfur content may provide a near-ideal answer to satisfy US goals for clean air and energy self-sufficiency. Vast reserves, amenable to low-cost strip mining, serve as a powerful economic basis for its viability as a primary and dependable source of energy for the coming decades. A major consideration, the solution of which may not be obvious, is the transportation cost. These deposits are remote from the utilities of the heavily populated eastern regions of the US (Fig. 1). A coal mine in Montana is likely to be more than 1500 miles from its utility market, while an eastern coal mine may be situated only 200 miles away. Thus, the question raised is: how can the haulage cost of western coal be substantially reduced to an acceptable level?

The velocity of mig-ration of these solutes in thorium metal due to a high amperage dc current was measured at several temperatures. All three solutes migrated in the same direction as the electron flow. Diffusion coefficients were combined with the migration velocities to predict the steady-state concentration profile. Electrotransport was shown to be an effective method of removing carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen from thorium and resistance ratios several times larger than for crystal bar thorium were achieved. However, the maxirnum attained purification was well below the predicted values, apparently due to some form of contamination. THE migration of solutes in metals when a high current density dc current is passed has been known for many years. This phenomenon has been the subject of a number of reviews published in recent years.l~* Many of the earlier investigators of electromigration of interstitial solutes interpreted the direction and velocity of migration on the basis of a charge on the solute particle. This interpretation is unclear because, in a given experiment, one cannot separate the contributions to the force moving the solute which arise from the charge on the solute in an electric field gradient and the momentum transfer from the scattering of the electrons or holes. There have been only a few quantitative measurements of interstitial migration velocities and some of these have been characterized by poor accuracy or by errors in the analysis of the experiment. The electrotransport mobilities of carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen in thorium were determined by observing the rate of movement of a discontinuity in the concentration profile. This method was used by Carlson el a~.~ to determine the mobilities of interstitial solutes in yttrium and its advantages are discussed in that paper. The specimen is essentially a pair of semi-infinite, bar-type diffusion couples. The electro-transport velocity was measured by observing the displacement of the mean concentration point in a measured length of time. The diffusion coefficients were calculated by the Grube method from the concentration profile. The transport mobilities and diffusion coefficients can be used to predict the concentration profile in an electrotransport experiment of a given time, current density, and specimen length. At long times a steady state will be reached such that the natural logarithm of the concentration of each solute varies linearly along the bar with a slope which is equal to the velocity of the migrating solute divided by its diffusion coefficient. The estimation of the purification potential of electrotransport is discussed by ~erhoeven.' A comparison of the concentration profile and the purification which should be expected from known solute velocities and diffusion coefficients with that which is obtained in an experiment can be very useful in indicating whether the maximum possible purification has been achieved. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The apparatus used in this study consisted of a sample chamber which was equipped with two electrodes, a sight glass, and a flange for mounting to a high-vacuum system capable of obtaining pressure of 2 x lo-? Torr. The chamber was made of stainless steel and was 4 in. in diam and 6 in. long. The seal between the electrodes and the chamber was made with "0" rings and compression bushings. The thorium specimens were threaded and screwed into tantalum "U"-shaped adapters attached to the ends of the electrodes. This arrangement is shown in Fig. 1

During 1967 wage settlements and strikes ran at a high rate and it has been estimated that union gains of 4 ½ % to 5% per year have been attained in many instances. When these events are coupled with the need to operate on lower grade and deeper deposits the need for technological advances in underground mining becomes obvious. Emphasis has been on ways to reduce the number of manshifts required per ton of product. Most significant advances have been made in rapid advance of primary mine openings, development of mobile, rubber-tired, front-end loaders and hauling units, high-speed drilling with rotary and rotary percussive units and a serious look at nuclear devices to break large volumes of ore cheaply. Boring Developments in bit manufacture and metallurgy have allowed continuous boring-type machines to be used on harder formations than was deemed feasible in the past. Hecla Mining Co. has been using raise boring equipment for drilling 9 7/8 in. diam pilot holes in raises which are later reamed in an upward direction to 48 in. diam. The machine used is a J. S. Robbins model 42R raise borer which has been used successfully to drill two relatively long 48-in. diam holes. The first was 520 ft in length at a dip of 76º, and the second was a 785-ft vertical hole.

A SERIES of studies of the corrosion of tin is under way in the Metals Research Laboratory at the Carnegie Institute of Technology. The complete program includes examination of the corrosion properties of high-purity tin and the changes produced in these properties by the addition of varying amounts of alloying elements. Other studies of this subject have been made recently under the sponsorship of the International Tin Research and Development Council, but these researches have been confined largely to the weakly acid environments commonly encountered in the canning industry.1 There is little information available regarding the corrosion of tin under alkaline conditions, but such data would be of value, for a large amount of the metal is used under such conditions. The potential measurements to be described were made because they seemed to offer the most rapid method for obtaining a general view of the conditions to be encountered in such service. These experiments will also serve to establish a technique that will be of value in further studies. It must be emphasized that the results reported are those of controlled laboratory experiments and that the conclusions drawn cannot yet be applied to service conditions; rather, they point to the directions in which more exhaustive experimental work may be done to best advantage. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The first work was devoted entirely to the problem of obtaining reproducible results from a series of potential measurements. Only the methods finally adopted as standard will be described here, except when the variations from these have furnished results of interest. The cell used is shown schematically in Fig. 1. Single crystals of aluminum were pulled in tension in a solution of paraffin oil and stearic acid. The critical resolved shear stress did not change with the concentration of the stearic acid solution; however, the extents and slopes of Stages I and II were affected greatly. The observations lend evidence that the weakening effect of surface-active agents is controlled by the rate of desorption of the metal soap formed by the reaction of the surface-active agent and the metal surface. IT has been shown by various investigators1-" that surface-active agents markedly affect the mechanical properties of single crystals. (A surface-active agent, for the purpose of this report, is defined as a long-chain organic molecule which contains one or more polar groups. Usually, however, investigations have considered only molecules having one polar group.) In general, when single crystals are deformed in some solutions containing surface-active agents, the creep rate, Fig. 1, is increased and the yield strength is decreased. The fatigue strength has been reported to be affected also.ll Rehbinder and his asociatesl' explained the "weakening" effect of surface-active agents in terms of physical adsorption. They assumed that a large pressure was created in microcracks which existed on the surface of the crystal." Harper and Cottrell,' from their study of the effects of surface conditions, found that the deformation characteristics of zinc single crystals were not altered by a solution containing a surface-active agent unless the surface of the specimen had an oxidized surface. They concluded that the role of the polar molecule was to remove the strengthening effect of the oxide coating. Later, And-radeetBpresented additional evidence which appeared to agree with this conclusion. In contrast, Klinken-berg et al.7 reported data which confirmed the results of Rehbinder. Using zinc and cadmium crystals which had been cleaned by electrolytic polishing, a large increase in the creep rate was observed when Lle specimens were tested in a 1 pct oleic acid-paraffin oil solution. EARLIER the authors and coworkers had pre sented data on isothermal temper embrittlement of an SAE 3140 steel?' In that work, however, attention was concentrated on embrittlement at 575°C and below. Preliminary measurements showed that embrittlement at 675 °C was much mote rapid than would be expected from the data at the lower temperatures: and indicated the need for further work above 575°C. The possibility of an upper nose in the time-temperature embrittlement diagram above 575°C was pointed out. Procedure The same heat of SAE 3140 steel was used as in the previous work, and experimental methods were the same. All blanks were austenitized 1 hr at 900°C and water, quenched. Groups were then tempered 1 hr at 675"C, water quenched, and given embrittling treatments for times of 5 min to 240 hr at 675" to 600 °C, as shown in Table I. Other groups, after the temper and quench, were embrittled 48 to 1440 hr at 550°C. Another series was tempered 240 hr at 675"C, quenched, and held for various times at 650" to 375°C (Table 11). For comparison, a series was tempered for these same times at 700°, 675", and 650°C (Table 111). The Ae, temperature for this heat of steel had been determined as approximately 690°C;1*a the treatments at 700°C were introduced to determine the effects of tempering in a range where a little austenite would fonn. A large number of other treatments, involving holding at two temperatures in succession after the temper, and occasionally slow cooling or heating, were also studied. These treatments are listed in the tables. Austenitizing was done in air; all subsequent treatments were in salt. Blanks were always water quenched after the last treatment. The heat-treated blanks were machined to standard V-notch Charpy specimens. A transition curve for each group was obtained by breaking the specimens at various temperatures on a 217 ft-lb impact machine having a striking velocity of 16.8 fps, and plotting the observed percentage of fibrous fracture vs the test temperature. From this plot, the transition temperature was taken as the lowest temperature at which the fracture appeared 100 pct fibrous; its accuracy is estimated as +5"C. Generally, hardness was measured on every bar. Since a decrease in hardness itself seems to decrease the transition temperature somewhat, a correctiona of —0.28"C per Bhn was applied to permit comparison of the transition temperatures on a uniform basis of 24 Rc. The transition temperature and hardness results are given in Tables I through VI. Where overlap of earlier work1.' occurred, data were combined.

The properties of quartz, calcite, magnezite and dolomite suspensions prepared from -30 µm size fractions of these minerals have been investigated. Selective coagulation of the quartz-calcite, quartz-magnezite and quartz-dolomite binary suspensions was possible at the pH values slightly above those for the i.e.p. of the carbonate minerals. The tests revealed that quartz suspensions were not flocculated by the anionic flocculants, whereas the same polymers were flocculants for calcite, magnezite and dolomite. Selectivity in the flocculation of the quartz-calcite, quartz-magnezite and quartz-dolomite binary suspensions was not, however, satisfactory because of the activation of quartz by ca2+ and Mg2+ ions. Dispersing reagents can be used to improve the selectivity of flocculation.

IN a previous articles we have described a technique for measuring the relative intensities of gamma rays from the radioactive elements occurring naturally in geological formations along the walls of a borehole. The apparatus consisted of two Geiger-Müller tubes mounted inside a pressure-tight chamber. Each counter tube was coupled separately to an amplifier and a frequency meter at the surface by means of a multiconductor cable upon Which the chamber was suspended. The output currents of the two frequency meters were recorded on a photographic paper as the chamber was moved in 'the hole. These traces showed remarkable correlation with the geologic formations, as evidenced by comparison with commercial electrical logs.' Owing to the penetrating power of the gamma rays, logs may be taken in both open and cased boreholes. The apparatus has recently been changed somewhat. One of the counter tubes has been removed and a stage of amplification has been added. inside the chamber, This arrangement seems to give a more favorable signal-to-noise ratio and satisfactory logs can be now made in cased holes and also in open holes as previously, Briefly described, the chamber moving in the hole is made of 3,2-in. drill pipe and is about 10 ft. long. There is an additional extension about 2 ft, long at the top, inside which cable connections are made. The Geiger-Müller tube is mounted inside the bottom end of the chamber, Above this is the vacuum-tube amplifier with its batteries and transformer, In the top part of the chamber, small 45-volt batteries are mounted, which in part supply the high voltage for the counter tube, Additional voltage is supplied from the surface through the multiconductor cable upon which the chamber is suspended. Also, the output of the transformer in the single-stage amplifier is coupled to another single-stage amplifier at the surface through this cable. By far the greater number of the members of this Institute are men who are engaged in the strenuous work of the technical part of their profession, and find little time for the abstract scientific work which is less distinctly practical and pecuniarily remunerative. There is, however, a small but increasingly nu, merous class whose members devote themselves to broad geological problems which underlie the systematic development, and whose work, theoretically, ought to precede and form a basis for that of their more practical brethren. These are the so-called mining or economic geologists, who are, for the most part, connected with State or National geological surveys. Prom the character of their work, the life of these men necessarily follows rather different lines from that of most of their colleagues, and is not generally familiar to them. It seems admissible, therefore, that to the life of a prominent member of this class, who died during the past year, having literally sac-rified his life to his work, a more extended notice should be given than the relatively small number of his contributions to the Transactions night seem to justify. George Homans Eldridge, son of Ellery and Sarah (Mathews) Eldridge, was born on Cape Cod at Yarmouth, Mass.; Christmas day, 1854. His boyhood education in the public school at Yarmouth was followed by a six years' course in the Public Latin School at Boston, from which he entered Harvard University in 1872, being graduated with the highest rank in his class in the natural sciences in 1876. During his college course he spent the summers of 1875-6 at Cumberland Gap, Ky.,as volunteer aid to Prof. N. S. Shaler, who was then in charge of the State Geological Survey of Kentucky. MOST of us householders in the East burn anthra-cite, so the problem that interests us most is the distribution and supply of the domestic sizes of anthracite. That, however, is only a small part of the coal problem and has its own peculiarities. Whether anthracite prices are high or low is largely a matter of relativity, depending on the size of the transaction, the available supply, and other things. As an isolated example which I hesitate to quote because it is not entirely representative, you may be interested to know that the Government fuel yard has been delivering to the Government buildings in the District of Columbia, white-ash stove coal at 16 c. a ton less during January, 1923, than during the same month of 1922. The reason is that the Government deals only with large companies who have been wise enough not to boost their prices and the small increase at the mine has been more than offset by the decrease in railroad rates. The total cost is $12.50 per ton, but I want to make it perfectly clear that it does not follow that this would be a just price for a retail dealer to charge the domestic consumer. For example, in the Government business there is no such thing as a bad debt, and certain other fixed or general charges are charged to other departments. The Bureau of Effi-ciency made an effort to determine what would be a. legitimate handling charge for a retail dealer, in Washington, and concluded that if the Government's cost of handling was $1.00, then $1.88 would be the corresponding fair charge to pay a retail dealer carrying the same volume of business, allowing for bad debts, complete depletion and depreciation of his equipment, and 10- per cent. profit. Assuming that this is the correct differential for Washington, it does not' follow that it would be equally just for Pittsburgh, New York, or elsewhere; nor does it by any means follow that it is a fair differential this year, because the dealer, after being unable to use his equipment in the summer months, now has to deliver an unusually large quantity of coal. I merely cite this instance to show that on the basis of primary cost of coal plus railway charges the retail price is not necessarily higher this-year than last.

Coal can be liquefied and gasified by several methods, all of which are being investigated and evaluated because each has its own advantages and disadvantages in terms of capital costs, end-products, and extent of required gas clean-up. Since coal conversion requires coal preheating to some extent, all these schemes begin with a coal-preparation step in a pressurized and heated reactor vessel where, in most cases, some additive or catalyst is usually injected. Extracting hydrogenated fuels from coal is not really a new science. Many people still recall the old "coal oil" that fired the lamps of stoves of rural America until the 1920's; the coal oil was produced by a basic Fischer- Tropsch method which has since been further developed to synthesize liquid fuels in the form of 86 to 90-octane gasoline and diesel fuel.

Burma has long been known for its ruby, tungsten, and tin deposits, and, lately, for having the largest lead-zinc mine in the world, the Bawd-win mine of the Burma Corpn. All the coal used, however, is imported from Calcutta; this is a bituminous coal of about 11,000 B.t.u., 24 per cent. ash, and costs about $8 per ton. Bituminous coal has not, thus far, been found, but many lignite deposits are known. The most promising lignite deposits are in the Namma field, Fig. 1, situated in the Northern Shan States of Upper Burma, about 30 mi. south of Lashio, the terminus of the Burma Railway, 750 mi. north of Rangoon.
