Selective desliming holds much promise for upgrading low-grade, finely disseminated iron ores that are not readily amenable to conventional flotation. The process is extremely sensitive to the presence of calcium and magnesium ions that are in process water or are released by constituent minerals. The effects of these two alkaline earth ions on quartz were compared through streaming potential measurements, flocculation and cationic flotation tests, abstraction tests and scanning electron microscope studies. Calcium ion, adsorbed as CaOH+, and magnesium ion, attached by heterocoagulation as Mg(OH)2 precipitate, were responsible for the flocculation of quartz suspension and for the depression in cationic flotation of silica in alkaline pulp solutions. Magnesium hydroxide coating could be removed, similarly to adsorbed calcium ion, by complexation with EDTA and polyphosphates.

An extended investigation by the chief engineer of the Bureau of Mines shows that North Dakota has immense beds of lignite. War conditions have stimulated the use of North Dakota lignite until it is now being used at the rate of 1,000,000 tons annually. This North Dakota lignite is coming into extensive local use and considerable of it is being shipped to various parts of the state. The great problem at the present time is to find a market for the gas, which is the principal-by-product of lignite preparation. Bureau of Mines specialists will complete their reports of the studies of lignite in this country and will then make a recommendation as to the lignite field which is best suited for the establishment of the proposed Government's experimental plant. Rolling md annealing procedures are described for developing the (110) preferred orientation in tantalum for use as a thermionic-emission materinl where electrodes of a uniform high work function are needed. The development of a (110) [001] annealing texture is also reported. A preferential growth process due to low (110) gas-metal surface energy is considered in explanation of the observed growth of (110) grains. ThE growth of (110)-oriented grains in thin strips of rolled zone-refined tantalum, previously discussed briefly,' is reported together with more recent information on the formation of a (110)[001.] annealing texture, i.e., one where the [001] direction of each grain lies close to the rolling direction. The development of tantalum sheet with a (110) preferred orientation (position of [001 ] directions unspecified) is of importance as a thermionic-emission material in thermionic-energy converters. Since therm ionic-emission properties of cesium-coated crystals vary over a wide range depending on (hkl) a2-7 a single (hkl) preferred orientation is more useful than either several preferred orientations or none. Furthermore, the (110) preferred orientation yields the highest thermionic-emission density for a cesium coverage of less than a monolayer.5-7 A consideration of the stability of the grain structure needed at high operating temperatures suggests that the preferred orientation itself should be produced by annealing processes. Information on annealing textures in tantalum, however, is rather limited. Pugh and Hibbard 8 obtained (111)[112] and (lll)[112] components in a 1400°C recrystallization texture in 95 pct cold-rolled foil; these components were enhanced on annealing at 2500°C. Muller9 rolled 99.97 Ta to 90 pct reduction in thickness in the final stage and noted only a slight sharpening of the rolling texture, with some intensification of the (111)[112] component upon annealing at 1200°C. The experimental procedure followed in the present work stemmed from the idea of using possible differences in (hkl) surface energies to provide a small driving force for growth of grains having the lowest (hkl) surface energy.l0* This would mean using high-purity tantalum processed into thin sheet form and annealed at high temperatures either in a noncontaminating atmosphere or in one producing additional sample purification. EXPERIMENTAL Zone-Refined Tantalum. National Research Corp. tantalum in the form of 1/8-in.-diam rod and of 99.98 purity (53 ppm 0, 15 ppm N, and 8 ppm C) was zone-melted four times. The traversing speed was 4 mm per min. Such treatment increased the resistance ratio, R293k/R20K , where R293K is the resistance of the specimen at 20°C and R20K the re-resistance at liquid-hydrogen temperature, from a value of 25 for the initial rod to 175 for the zone-refined rod (the increase in the resistance ratio provides a measure of purification11,12). Part of a zone-refined rod was rolled unidirec-tionally to a strip 0.003 in. thick and 0.28 in. wide. Samples were given anneals in the range 1300" to 2100°C using ac conduction heating in an oil-free vacuum system. Recrystallization to small grains appeared to be complete at 1300°C. Large grains were formed at higher temperatures, but these were not entirely strain-free, some grains showing asterism in Laue X-ray patterns and some displaying a range in orientation. Part of the difficulty was caused by thermal expansion of the tantalum strip as it was held between fixed supports. A new pozzolanic composition has been developed for cementing oil wells where moderate to high temperatures prevail. This material is an entirely different concept to other oil well cementing materials, such as portland cements, cements containing additives, or liquid resins. Its characteristics are such that it is not, at present, recommended for use at temperatures less than 140º F. It can he either accelerated or retarded across a wide range of well conditions. This new cement is composed of a pozzolanic material, hydrated lime, and a chemical activator to give it early initial strength. This material can be used in wells from 6,000 to 18,000 or more feet where temperature conditions are similar to those along the Gulf Coast. This cement, when set, has no soluble portion subject to leaching or any compounds that should be attacked by sulfate waters or brines. For this reason, it should be permanent when placed adjacent to formations carrying any type of fluid. The compressive strengths in 24 hours are more than adequate for wells where temperatures are 140°F and higher. These values ore in excess of many other types of cementing composition presently in use in the field. This pozzolanic composition does not retrogress in strength at high temperatures as do some other types of cementing materials. The slurry weights of this material will vary slightly according to the specific gravity and water requirements of the pozzolnn itself. The materials covered herein will mix from 13.5 to 14.3 lb/gal, and will have a waiting-on-cement time comparable to other materials used under the same conditions. Economically speaking, this composition is less expensive than either portland cements or retarded cements presently being used under deep well conditions. INTRODUCTION Pozzolans are siliceous material which, though not cementitious in themselves, contain constituents which at ordinary temperatures will combine with lime in the presence of water to form compounds which have a low solubility and possess cementing properties. The use of pozzolanic materials dates back many hundreds of years and both the ancient Greeks and Romans were aware that certain volcanic deposits, if finely ground and mixed with lime and sand, yielded a mortar which possessed special properties. Generally, the early strengths of such materials were rather weak and were considered insufficient for modern commercial usages. Pozzolanic materials have been used extensively with portland cement in mass concrete to obtain special properties. In recent years, large quantities of certain pozzolanic materials have been used successfully admixed into portland cements for oil well cementing. Pozzolans, being reactive silicates, will combine with the free lime that is an inherent component of set portland cements and thereby. becomes cementitious themselves. POZZOLANS FOR OIL WELL CEMENTING There are many types of pozzolans, some of which are more reactive than others. The quality of the pozzoIan depends on the degree of reactivity, chemical composition, fineness, and other less well understood factors. Of the several characteristics of a coal that influence its suitability for use in a given piece of burning equipment, the clinkering and slagging characteristics of the ash of the coal are highly important. They determine the maximum rate at which the coal may be burned on a stoker or in pulverized form without difficulty from damage to metal parts, from erosion of refractory walls, or from stoppage of gas passages by accumulation on the tubes. They also determine the minimum rate at which a slag-tap furnace may be operated without difficulty in removal of the ash in fluid form. Need for a Better Criterion In common with other producers and users of coal, the Northern Illinois Coal Corporation has long used the available methods for the measurement of the clinkering characteristics of coal ash, chemical composition and fusion temperature of the ash, as criteria for the selection of coal that would suit the particular requirements of its customers. These two available criteria have greatly helped in the problem of selection but it is unnecessary to dwell upon the fact that they are not completely adequate for the purpose. The composition of the ash and its clinkering tendency vary widely over the company's mining area. In a certain period, some years ago, an unusual amount of severe clinkering of the ash of coal shipped made extremely acute the need for a better criterion of the clinkering that might be expected. It was also desirable that the criterion result from a reasonably rapid method, so that the clinkering characteristics of the coal would be known before shipment. Complaints on the severe clinkering of the ash came from only a fraction of the output of the mine but the occurrence of the clinkering seemed quite unpredictable. Attempts to relate the chemical composition of the ash and the fusion temperatures to the clinkering were unsuccessful. Coal from the area of the mine in which the fusion temperature of the ash was the lowest gave the least trouble from clinker-ing. Chemical analysis of the ash from that section giving the most trouble showed high contents of iron and low contents of silica, but frequently these were not greatly different from those of coals that gave little trouble from clinker. Aside from the clinkering difficulty, the coal was quite satisfactory. The ash content was normal and high rates of burning could be obtained, but again and again such severe clinkering would occur that the furnace would be shut down because of the accumulation of clinker. Examination of the clinker from the customers' plants showed that the clinkers that adhered to the grates and fouled the fuel beds were hard, flat, dense, and usually dark in color. Coal that was satisfactory gave clinkers that were softer, bulky rather than flat, of low density, and usually lighter in color.

An apparatus has been developed in which metals can bc solidified under closely controlled unidirectional heat flow conditions. The metals are cooled by a multiple-air jet system, designed so that the heat transfer coefficient is uniformly distributed over the cooled surface. They are contained in a special furnace system of low thermal mass which enables unidirectional heat flow conditions to be rigorously maintained for certain specific cooling rates. This apparatus has been used to study the solidijication of pure lead and pure tin at zero superheat, solid metal thicknesses being determined by thermal analysis, and by dipstick readings. Detailed thermal balances have been drawn up on the experiments in order to determzne the cooling conditions that most rigorously correspond to unidirectional heat flow. Solid metal thicknesses, measured experimentally for these conditions, have beetz shown to agree closely with the theoretical wedictzons of different integml-profile methods. lt is concluded that any errors inherent in the integval-profile method are no greater than the errors inherent in experimental investigations of solidification. A knowledge of the influence of heat transfer rates on the solidification of metals is essential to the understanding and control of industrial casting processes. Since very few formal methods are available for solving the heat conduction equation under solidification conditions several authors have developed approximate techniques for doing so. One of the most promising is the integral-profile technique that has been used by Goodman,1 Hills,2,3 Tien4 and Hills and ~oore' to predict solidification rates under certain specific heat transfer coniditions. In the first of this present series of papers6 Hills has further generalized the method and developed a universal integral-profile technique that can be used to predict solidification rates under a wide variety of unidirectional heat flow conditions. Since the method is approximate it is necessary to investigate the accuracy with which it predicts actual solidification rates. A review of the literature7 shows that solidification rates have seldom been measured under accurately known heat transfer conditions and it was therefore decided to develop experimental techniques that would enable this to be done. Results obtained would then be available as a check on the approximate solutions already developed, and in the development of further solutions that would be applicable under more complicated conditions. The initial work in this experimental program which is described here, is concerned with the solidification of pure metals at zero superheat under unidirectional heat flow conditions. Subsequent experiments have been concerned with the solidification of pure metals at appreciable superheats, under varying unidirectional heat flow conditions and under two dimensional heat flow conditions. In a series of experiments recently initiated, the solidification of binary alloys is also being investigated. The results of these subsequent experiments, together with relevant theory, will be described in later papers. The solidifying metal has been cooled in all the experiments, by a multiple air jet system designed so that the heat transfer coefficient to the cooled surface is constant and is uniformly distributed over the surface. This type of system has been chosen since only one parameter is needed to specify the heat transfer conditions and since these conditions are analogous to those met in certain continuous casting processes.' Air cooling was chosen in preference to water cooling, however, since it offers a wider range of heat transfer conditions, and since it can be investigated by analogous mass transfer techniques. The first part of this paper discusses the existing integral-profile solutions that correspond to the heat transfer conditions used in the experiments, and describes the development and use of the experimental apparatus. In subsequent sections the heat transfer and solidification results are presented, and the various theoretical predictions are compared with them, and with one another.

THE use of diamonds upon a large scale in drilling rocks, and the substitution to a certain degree of rotary diamond drills for the ordinary steel percussion drills, marks a new era in the art of mining. Since the invention by Leschot of the diamond drill, it has steadily advanced in its utility and range of application, and in the appreciation of miners and engineers. I t must be claimed as one of the many gifts of science to the arts ; and it is, in particular, one of the fruits of the scientific education given at the Ecole Centrale, at Paris. Members are all, doubtless, more or less familiar with the construction of the drill and of the machinery by which it is applied in boring. I t is, therefore, my present purpose only to direct your attention to some recent marked improvements, made by the American Diamond Drill Company, by which the economy and efficiency of the machines have been increased. Form of Bit.-The annular or ring form of the drill-head or bit was, I believe, the earliest; and it is still in use, without essential modification, wherever it is desired to obtain a sample " core" or specimen of the rock traversed. But for mere drilling, regardless ~f the preservation of a test-core, a solid-head bit is preferred, except for very large holes. Until recently, these solid-head bits were made with a pointed cutting face shaped like an obtuse cone. ' For a number of years, from an economic standpoint, the ventilation of the Colorado mine of the Davis-Daly Copper Co. has been a difficult problem. The development through the main hoisting shaft was pursued for a number of years and to a depth of about 2500 ft.(762 m.)before large bodies of good commercial ore were opened. This lack of early success in exploration restricted expenditures for ventilation, with the result that the present orebodies were developed at a depth of 2500 ft., and in country rock of relatively high temperature, without adequate means of supplying the development faces and the stopes with cool or fresh air of low humidity and suitable velocity. During the progress of development, two or three connections were made at higher levels with the workings of adjoining operations, but these were of a makeshift and unsatisfactory character and afforded no means for carrying downcast air from the surface, in anything approaching a direct course, to the working faces. During the latter part of 1917, arrangements were made with the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., whereby, during the year 1918 and the early part of the year 1919, a crosscut was driven eastwards on the 2500-ft. level of the Colorado shaft and connection was made by means of an up-raise of approximately 200 ft. to a crosscut driven westwards from the 2800-ft. level of the Belmont mine, this crosscut at the top of the raise being driven at Davis-Daly expense by the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. This connection, in conjunction with a No. 11 Sirocco fan installed near the Colorado shaft, provided the Colorado mine with a maximum of approximately 30,000 cu. ft. per min. of relatively fresh air, most of which came in a fairly direct route from the downcast Belmont shaft through the No. 11 fan to the 2500-ft. level stopes. After passing through these stopes and the stopes of overlying levels, it passed through the main crosscuts on higher levels back to the Colorado shaft, which provided the upcast for this current of air. A practical analytical method is developed in this paper which provides the practicing reservoir engineer with a handy method for analyzing oilfield interference problems. The procedure employed entails the principle of superposition of individual eflects. A set of charts has been developed and can be used to evaluate the individual effects. The charts represent non-steady state pressure distribution in an extensive aquifer due to a constant rate of production from an oilfield which can be approximated by circular geometry; they are constructed from solutions to the diffusivity equation considering a circular sink as distinguished from a point sink. The solutions are obtained partially from mathenlatical considerations and partially from analog and digital computations. By virtue of the method of images, the charts can be used also to treat the case of production near a fault. In addition, provisions are made for treating oil fields, which are produced by partial water-drive. Treating an actual field case is deferred to a subyequent writing; however, illustrative example is presented to demonstrate the method of application. The pressure distribution in linear and limited radial aquifers is currently under study. INTRODUCTION With the increasing difficulty of discovering new oil reserves, attention is necessarily focused on the efficient development and production of existing reservoirs. Efficient production depends on the availability of reliable means for predicting the pressure-production behavior of oil fields. The prediction is usually performed by analytical methods or computers. Analytical methods are often limited to systems which can be approximated by simple geometry. However, analytical methods have the distinct advantage of being readily performed without special equipment. Analog and digital computers lend themselves to a variety of problems, but are not always locally available and consequently their use is limited. One particular situation in which analytical techniques are needed involves studies of multiple, water-drive oil fields sharing a common aquifer. Such oil fields are in hydrodynamic communication. Therefore, production from any of the oil fields is accompanied by a pressure decline which is transmitted through the aquifer to the other oil fields and manifested as pressure interference. The rate of propagation of the pressure decline is such that the pressure may be significantly reduced many miles away from a producing pool. An example of pressure interference is found in the Woodbine formation in East Texas. There. a dozen or more pools, including several of major size, draw on the Woodbine formation for water drive. The pressure in the water-bearing portion of the formation has been significantly reduced over an area of several thousand square miles. This reduction of pressure has been such that when the Hawkins pool was discovered in 1940, the pressure in it had already been reduced 280 psi below the initial value in the aquifer. This resulted from prior production from other Woodbine sand pools, including, in particular, the East Texas field some 20 miles to the east of Hawkins.' The Lucky-Tiger mine is a silver-gold property, situated at El Tigre, in the northeastern part of Sonora, Mexico, at an elevation of 6000 ft. in the Sierra Madre Mountains. It is 30 miles by wagon road from the Esqueda station on the Nacozari railroad. Since its discovery in 1903, the mine has produced forty million ounces of silver. The ore has averaged 40 oz. silver and 0.25 oz. gold per ton. Copper, lead and zinc have been of minor importance, having averaged 0.4 per cent., 1.1 per cent., and 1.5 per cent., respectively. The richness of the ore, combined with its occurrence in narrow veins, required the use of the more expensive methods. of mining. Geology Wall Rock The wall rock is rhyolite and rhyolite tuff, both of Tertiary age. In rare instances, post-mineral andesite dikes have been intruded along the veins. In the upper part of the mine, the walls were fairly solid. On the lower levels, the walls are usually cither kaolinized and soft or silicified and fractured, both conditions requiring closely filled stopes or much timber. Veins The veins have been deposited along fracture planes in the volcanics. There are three principal veins, about 600 ft. apart, all striking nearly north-south and dipping steeply to the west. The study of the condensation of zinc from its vapor was undertaken to shed light on certain problems encountered in large-scale electric zinc-furnace work recently conducted. It is a matter of common knowledge that one of the disadvantages of the arc type, electric zinc furnace, is the production of a large amount of blue powder and proportionately little liquid spelter, for, as stated by Stansfield,1 "A notable defect in the electric smelting of zinc ores is the difficulty experienced in obtaining the distilled zinc in the liquid state; when zinc ores are smelted electrically, very little liquid metal is commonly obtained, nearly all of the zinc being in the state of powder."

Computer simulation of mine ventilation systems, after a slow start in the early sixties, is gaining increasing acceptance for planning, design, and evaluation purposes. Numerous programs are readily available from government, university, consulting, and industry sources. The computer adage "garbage in, garbage out" is as applicable in ventilation engineering as in any other application of computers, and has been responsible for the questionable results obtained in some instances. The source of input data for a ventilation simulation is most often a pressure-quantity survey of the mine, or, in the case of a new mine, information derived from a survey of an existing mine which has conditions similar to those expected in the new mine. The crucial step is to generate simulation input data from the ventilation survey. Problems such as quantities that do not balance, pressure gradients opposite to measured air flow, differences in the pressure datum in a multi-shaft mine, modeling of leakage, and deviations in flow from the square law (H=RQ2) are frequently encountered and must be resolved. The purpose of this paper is to discuss these aspects and to propose procedures which can lead to input data for valid simulations of mine ventilation systems.

The paper presents an analyzer and the method for the continuous determination of weight percentage of ore grains with diameter smaller than 75 pm in mineral slurries. The method is based upon the measurement of characteristic x-rays of copper excited by primary radiation of two different energies 16.5 keV and 60 keV from Pu238 and Am241 sources respectively. Additionally the backscattered primary radiation is measured in order to correct the variations of the solids content in the slurry.

ONE of the perplexing problems that face the translator of an old technical treatise is the question of terms for units of weight and measure. We have used an English word only when it is linguistically equivalent to the Italian one and is a unit of approximately the same size. Libbra and oncia thus become pound and ounce, for the actual weights were within 10 per cent of the modem Troy weights. On, the other hand, the length measures braccio, palmo, and dito, which could be rendered literally as arm, palm, and finger or digit, respectively, have no good English metrological equivalents and it has seemed best to retain the Italian words. The exact transfer of Biringuccio's weights and measures into modern terms is impossible because of the uncertainty as to his standards. Even as late as 1803, when the metric system was first introduced into Italy, practically every city had its own standards. There were, for example, at least eight different palmi, varying from 22.3 to 29.2 centimeters. The purpose of this paper is to direct attention to the importance and the usefulness of phase measurements in electrical prospecting for ore, a subject about which virtually nothing has been published. The paper describes a new field method for ore prospecting, the "Turam" method, which makes use of phase measurements, and which has been used with great success for five years. Of the principal geophysical prospecting methods, the gravimetric and magnetic methods determine the direction and strength of the static fields of force of the earth. By seismic and electrical methods, fields of force are applied to the block of ground under investigation. By these methods a third parameter can be measured, besides the direction and strength of the field; namely, the time of arrival of the applied field at the different observation points. This time of arrival has been practically the only parameter measured in seismic work, while in electrical prospecting it has generally not been considered, the measurements having been limited to determination of direction and strength of the applied field. Phase Measurements In the most widely used of the electrical prospecting methods, those using alternating current, the time of arrival of the "electrical vibration" at the different observation points can be carried out as phase measurements. The phase angle measured then expresses, in part of one "vibration," or one cycle, how much the electrical vibrations at the observation point are out of step with those close to the source of the field. A phase lag of 45", for instance, means that the alternating field in the observation point is one-eighth of one complete " vibration," or cycle, out of step behind the field at the source. If the frequency is, say, 500 cycles per second, a frequency often used in electrical prospecting, a phase lag of 45' then means that the time required for the field of force to travel from the source to the observation point is 1/8 ' /500 = 1/4000 sec. Since the phase angle can be measured with an accuracy of a fraction, say one-tenth, of a degree, and the frequency can be considerably higher than 500, it is readily seen that the time of arrival can in this way be measured
