Founding of the Institute The advance of population and civilization in the U. S. moved through the woodlands of the East, and reached the edge of the great central plains about the middle of the nineteenth century. There the advance paused for almost a generation - ahead were vast reaches of prairie country, uncharted, forbidding, and populated by hostile tribes of the native Indians. The turmoil of the Civil War, and the readjustments following it, further delayed the advance. By about 1870, the Nation was becoming stabilized again, the conflict with the Indians was closing, and the pressure of growth was forcing population to resume its westward movement. In addition to geography, the Nation had another frontier: the development of its immense natural resources. Conditions of the time brought into sharp focus the need for coal, iron, steel, gold, silver, and other minerals. The application of engineering and science was necessary for the production of these minerals and their manufacture into products to meet the needs of a growing nation. The requirements of the time were eloquently expressed in a paper by AIME member Edmund C. Pechin in 1872 : We find, the world over, the most intense activity everywhere displayed in enterprises requiring prodigious quantities of iron. Railways of colossal magnitude are projected. . . . The growing scarcity of timber is compelling the use of iron in buildings; bridges of wonderful size and strength; huge ocean steamships; barges and boats for lake and river traffic; churches; cars, and thousands of minor articles of every shape and size. . . . The time has come when scientific research is to assume its true position - the day of "sheer force and blind stupidity," whose only protection is a high tariff, has gone forever . . . the physicist, the geologist and mineralogist; the chemist, the engineer, are as essential to success as the [blast] furnace itself. . . . There is no merely practical man, no matter how varied may have been his experience, or how long his practice, that will not benefit from the results of scientific investigation. That there is a growing sense of the importance of having thoroughly prepared scientific men in every department of business is evidenced by the institutions [of learning] that are springing up in different quarters, provided with

The Howe Coal Co. is mining the Oklahoma Lower Hartshorne bed which ranges in seam thickness from 38 to 42 in. and pitches approximately 7° to the northeast. The raw feed to the cleaning plant averages about 20% ash and 1.10% sulfur, being reduced in the cleaning process to 4.8% ash and 0.9% sulfur with a free swelling index of 8 or 8%. This coal rivals the Pocohantas seam in chemistry and coking characteristics but has better fluidity than the Pocohantas seam coal. The coal is presently being prepared for the Japanese steel market in an 85-tph pilot plant designed and constructed by Roberts & Schaefer. The cleaning-plant flowsheet is discussed in detail.

This paper presents numerical solutions of the equations describing the imbibition of water and the countercurrent flow of oil in porous rocks. The imbibition process is of practical importance in recovering oil from heterogeneous formations and has been studied principally by experimental means. Calculations were made for imbibition of water into both linear and radial systems. Imbibition in the linear systems was allowed to take place through one open, or permeable, face of the porous medium studied. ln the radial system, water was imbibed inward from the outer radius. The effects on rate of imbibition of varying the capillary pressure and relative permeability curves, oil viscosity and the initial water saturation were computed. For each case studied, the rate of water imbibition and the saturation and pressure profiles were calculated as functions of time. The results of these calculations indicate that, for the porous medium studied, the time required to imbibe a fixed volume of water of a certain viscosity is approximately proportional to the square root of the viscosity of the reservoir oil whenever the oil viscosity is greater than the water viscosity. Results are also presented illustrating the effects on rate of imbibition of the other variables studied. INTRODUCTION The process of imbibition, or spontaneous flow of fluids in porous media under the influence of capillary pressure gradients, occurs wherever there exist in permeable rock capillary pressure gradients which are not exactly balanced by opposing pressure gradients (such as those resulting from the influence of gravity). The importance of such capillary movement in the displacement of oil by water or gas was recognized in early investigations and described by Leverett, Lewis and True in 1942.1 Methods advanced by these authors for studying the process using dynamically scaled models were rendered more general and flexible by the research of later workers.2"4 The influence of capillary forces in laboratory water floods has also been discussed by several authors.6 While imbibition plays a very important role in the recovery of oil from normal reservoirs, Brownscombe and Dyes7 pointed out that imbibition might be the dominant displacement process in water flooding reservoirs characterized by drastic variations in permeability, such as in fractured-matrix reservoirs. In water-wet, fractured-matrix reservoirs, water will be imbibed from fractures into the matrix with a countercurrent expulsion of oil into the fractures. If the imbibition occurs at a sufficiently rapid rate, a very successful water flood can result; if the imbibition proceeds slowly the project might not be economically attractive. Scaled-model studies have demonstrated the vital importance of imbibition in secondary recovery in fractured reservoirs. It is therefore important in the evaluation of waterflooding prospects to develop a thorough understanding of the quantitative relationships of the factors which control the rapidity of capillary imbibition. The imbibition process serves reservoir engineers in still another important way by providing a technique for studying the wettability of reservoir core samples. Such experiments are usually conducted by observing the rate of expulsion of oil or water from core samples submerged in the appropriate fluid. Several papers have been 'published on the experimental techniques involved?? Although Handy has recently published a method for calculating capillary pressures from experiments with gas-saturated cores, it has not yet been possible to deduce quantitative information regarding water-oil relative permeability and capillary pressure characteristics of the rock from the experimental results. Thus a technique is needed for studying the quantitative dependence of imbibition rate on oil and water viscosity, initial water saturation, relative permeability-saturation, and capillary pressure-saturation relations. The development of such information, including saturation and pressure profiles by laboratory experiments, would be very difficult. However, recent advances in the applica-

The paper presents isothermal recrystallization curves for 0.08 and 0.15 pct C steel at subcritical temperatures following small amounts of plastic deformation. The effects of deformation, temperature, and aging on nucleation and growth rates ore described. The free energy of activation for grain boundary migration in steel is given. SEVERAL excellent reviews of the literature have appeared concerning the recrystallization of metals.'-' The present investigation follows the approach advanced by Mehl, Stanley, and Anderson,6-7 in which the rate of recrystallization was analyzed in terms of N, the rate of nucleation, and G, the rate of growth of recrystallization nuclei. Two lots of low carbon, capped steel of the analysis given in Table I were studied. Each lot consisted of a 150 lb coil which had been hot rolled to 0.083 in. and then cold rolled to 0.042 in. at the mill. Strips 0.930 in. wide were sheared perpendicular to the rolling direction. Both steels were normalized before studying their recrystallization characteristics. The strips were cleaned, painted with a magnesia-acetone paste, and made into packs of equal weight, wrapped in 0.002 in. copper foil. The packs were placed in a salt bath at 900°C for 30 min and air cooled. A relief anneal followed in a second salt bath for 15 min at 650°C. The relief anneal was found necessary from early tests in which a longer incubation period and slower rate of recrystallization were observed in relief-annealed lot A steel than in similar material which was strained and recrystallized directly after being normalized. This effect, which indicates the presence of transformation and/or cooling stresses in steel air cooled from above the A, temperature, has also been observed by Samuels8 and Masing.9 Figs. 1 and 2 show the microstructure of lot A and B materials and illustrate the rather uniform No. 8 ASTM grain size produced by this heat treatment. Winlock and Leiter10 observed that strip specimens which had their sharp edges removed elongated more uniformly than those which were not polished. Similarly, when the sheared edges were removed on a belt grinder, it was found in the present investigation that such samples recrystallized more uniformly than did unpolished strips. Therefore, all strips were carefully rounded prior to their extension. The approximate strain limits for the production of large recrystallized grains are from 6 to 12 pct extension." It was found that for the purpose of this investigation, 8 and 9 pct elongation were suitable deformations. The strain rate employed was 0.01 in. per in. per min and produced a yield point elongation of 4 pct. Winlock and Leiter found that mild steel of No. 8 ASTM grain size gave the same yield point elongation when extended at 0.012 in. per in. per min. All of the lot A and B strips extended in tension developed a straight, stretcher strain line at each grip when the upper yield point was reached. The lines were parallel and made an angle of 55" with the edge of the strip. They approached each other with increasing strain and met near the center of the sample at the end of the yield point elongation. Immediately thereafter, a small drop in load was observed and then the load increased in a regular manner with increasing extension. The grips were initially 8 in. apart. After extension, the 6 in. gage length was carefully cut into 1 in. samples. The remainder of the strip was discarded. After a flash pickle in hot 50-50 hydrochloric acid, six samples, each of which had been taken from a different strip, were placed in a basket and submerged in a lead pot for isothermal recrystallization. Although no recovery effect was observed, strain aging did occur after extension. Therefore, samples were always recrystallized within 24 hr after their cold deformation. After recrystallization, the samples were etched with a solution comprised of one part by volume of nitric acid with three parts of water. Bromide printing paper was exposed directly at low magnifications and later used with a mask to measure the desired quantities. First, the average diameter of the largest grain visible in each sample was determined using dividers. Next, the number of recrystallized grains per unit area was counted and recorded as n. Then, for each sample, the combined area of the recrystallized grains was measured by transcribing the grain outlines to standard graph paper. Many determinations of the area of the recrystallized grains were repeated five times and indicated a standard error that was not greater than 25 pct. The average area for six samples was divided by the area of the mask to yield the percentage recrystallized. Marco Polo brought the first borax to Europe late in the 13th century. It was especially treasured then for one of its many qualities-that of working with gold as a soldering flux. Georgius Agricola in 1556 gave it the name chrysocolla (which the Moors called borax)-literally, "gold glue." Deposits of borax have been elusive and widely scattered-first found only in Tibet and Italy, and, in 1836, at Iquiqui, Chile. Dr. John Veatch made the first California discovery in 1856 while examining a mineral spring east of Red Bluff. This "Borax Lake" soon supplied 90% of U.S. demand, but flooding and other production problems caused the scene to shift from Borax Lake to Little Borax Lake and then to Nevada in 1871. Early transportation was by "Twenty-Mule Teams."

The experimental investigation described in this paper was conducted to determine the relative combustibilities of different samples of blastfurnace coke when burned in a current of air in a small furnace. It was undertaken in connection with the work done by Perrottl and Kinney2 on the process of combustion in the blast-furnace hearth.3 Reference is often made to the "combustibility" of coke by blastfurnace men, but exactly what is meant by the term "combustibility" is somewhat vague. Brassert,4 in a paper before a meeting of blastfurnace men in 1914, refers to combustibility as follows: The value of the coke in relation to the heat reactions in the furnace is determined not only by the carbon content but even more so by its combustibility. This, in turn, is governed by its size, the physical and chemical composition of the carbonaceous substance forming the cell walls, and the interior and surface structure of the coke pieces. These properties are, in turn, influenced by the chemical and physical properties of the coals used for coking, the density of the cake of coal in the oven, the coking time, temperature and heat regulation of the ovens, and last, but not least, by the method of quenching, screening and handling the finished coke. What principally concerns the blast furnace is the rate of progression of the combustion, which depends not so much on the chemical analysis as on the physical qualities of the coke. It is this rate of progression that we term combustibility, which is the speed at which the carbon molecules in the coke combine with oxygen under given conditions. In general, what the blast furnace requires is a coke which will burn rapidly and with intensity at the tuyeres, yet which has a sufficiently strong structure and hard surface to resist abrasion and solution by CO2 in the upper part of the stack.

The columnar-to-equiaxed transition (CET) has often been studied as a function of concentration, C, temperature gradient in the melt, G, and rate of solidification, R. Although it may not be immediately obvious it is sure that the CET, expressed as some ratio G/R necessary to suppress equiaxed nucleation for a given C,' cannot be a single-valued function of C. This restriction which is ignored in theoretical presentations is most trivially illustrated by the following simple reasoning. An ordinary casting is an unconstrained system where the thermal conditions change continuously with progressive solidification, and thus where the ratio G/R decreases from the outset. A CET occurring early in a casting (much equiaxed material) must then mean a higher value of G/R at transition, in comparison with the late CET which implies a more columnar ingot. Therefore, when we choose to experiment under constant superheat for all alloys across the simplest binary, and we find an inversion in the amount of equiaxed material, we shall find two values of C satisfying the G/R condition. However, in addition to this simple instance, the early experiments of ~orthcott' seem to show that the amount of equiaxed material in cast ingots may be a multivalued function of composition in a given binary system. In the present investigation, the CET has been examined in Pb-Sb, Pb-Ag, Pb-Sn, and Sn-Pb under several types of casting conditions. First, we have used the "bidirectional" ingot section Simulation;~ and we have used .'i~z situ" ingot solidification where a hot mold already filled with liquid is chilled so that there is no disturbance provoked by pouring. Differences in method are trivial to our purpose except for the fact that certain variations are more simply observed by one technique than by the other. Second, we have varied the mode of superheating from the simple extreme of casting all alloys from the same temperature regardless of composition to the careful casting at a standard superheat, calculated with respect to the alloy liquidus. Third, we have made provisions for decanting and interface observation, so that some "castings" were not completed. The results obtained with Pb-Sb are exemplary; some of these are shown in Fig. 1 along with explanatory captions. At 9 to 10 at. pct Sb, and thus above the solid-solubility limit Cs = 5.8 at. pct Sb and yet below the eutectic concentration Ceu = 17.5 at. pct Sb, there is a persistent anomaly in all the variations. Measurement was easy enough and standard enough so that we may forgo discussion of either method or possible error, in view of the forceful self-consistency shown by experiment. Solute distributions were measured along the bidirectional ingots in order to determine if a solute buildup had occurred at the CET. No anomalous changes in concentration were observed along the bars at either side of the solute anomaly of 10 at. pct Sb. The microstructures of the ingots were also examined across the range of composition investigated. At concentrations less than 9 at. pct Sb the micro- and macrostructures were typical of the cellular-dendritic growth usually reported for the columnar zone. Above the anomaly, both the columnar grain size and the amount of primary phase decreased. This microstruc-tural observation can be correlated with observations made of decanted interfaces. Below 9 at. pct Sb, the interface reveals the "normal" columnar dendritic structure; however above the anomalous concentration range, preferential growth of certain dendrites appears to form a "super dendrite" pattern. In Fig. 2 a microstructural view of the etched '(super dendrites'' shows their constitution both in terms of relative phase proportion and in terms of the ordinary smaller dendrites.

ELECTRICAL methods of geophysical exploration attracted major attention at the three sessions devoted to geophysics on Monday and Tuesday. At the opening' meeting Monday morning Hans Lundberg gave the paper by himself and Folke Kihlstedt; he described the use of the Racom, discussed last year, and the method whereby it is possible to eliminate all but subsurface, effects in electrical exploration. In the discussion Theodor Zuschlag pointed out some of the theoretical considerations behind the field procedure. Karl Sundberg's paper on the effect of impregnating waters was presented by title only, and S. F. Kelly then gave an abstract of a paper on the electrical properties of ores, by J. J. Jakosky, R. N. Anderson and Clyde H. Wilson. , This dealt with an exhaustive series of laboratory tests on the variation of -conductivity of ore specimens with the frequency of the energizing current, and of the effect of moisture content in typical clays and gouges on their conductivities at various frequencies. Considerable discussion was provoked during which the authors came in for some-criticism on their measuring circuits and for their assumption that a solid conductor could be compared with linear ones. They were praised, however, for making a start toward a compilation of resistivities for ores and rocks. Dr. Slichter disagreed with them that the conductivity of an orebody was primarily capacitive. He also called attention to the fact that it was high time geophysicists adopted the standard physical expression of ohm-,centimeters or ohm-meters to express resistivities. This same point was the burden of the next paper,. "Uniform Expression for Resistivity," by Sherwin F. Kelly, presented by title only.

We have made calculations to evaluate the sensitivity of atomic absorption as a technique to measure vapor pressure changes with temperature. Our conclusion, supported by the experimental findings presented in this work, is that the ultimate sensitivity of the technique is well below lo-' Torr. This magnitude of vapor pressure sensitivity makes the method extremely attractive for thermodynamic studies. Atomic absorption techniques have been used previously in this connection by Scatchard and Boyd' and by vidale2 with a much lower sensitivity reported. Scatchard and Boyd's work measured cadmium pressure over Ag-Cd alloys in the range 0.02 to 0.3 Torr, and Vidale estimated that sensitivities of only 10"5 to 10"6 Torr are to be expected. Atomic absorption appears to be particularly well-suited to thermodynamic studies for several reasons: A) It is extremely sensitive; our experiments indicate an ability to measure vapor pressure changes of 10"9 Torr. B) It is highly selective; there is seldom interference among the resonant wavelengths of the various species. C) It may be performed in an absorption cell under static conditions. This alleviates such problems as surface impoverishment of alloys, attainment of equilibrium, and temperature measurement and control. D) Simultaneous, or near-simultaneous, vapor pressure measurements may be made for several elements in a given system. Experimental. The physical basis of the technique is the highly selective absorption of particular wavelengths by specific atomic species. In most atomic absorption work the element of interest is incorporated into a hollow cathode lamp to provide a characteristic spectral source of high intensity. The spectra lines characteristic of the element in the cathode are attenuated by atoms of that element in the radiation path. Radiation from silver or cadmium hollow cathode lamps was directed along a path containing a 10-cm evacuated silica cell. The cell was positioned within a silica windowed furnace and contained silver, cadmium, or an Ag-Cd alloy. As the furnace temperature was elevated, the number of atoms of the absorbing element in the vapor phase within the cell rose, and the resonant radiation was increasingly absorbed. Intensities were measured by passing the radiation through a Techtron Model AA-4 one-half meter grating atomic absorption spectrometer equipped with a photo-multiplier detector. In order to minimize instabilities in the source, the hollow cathodes were allowed to warm up for several hours and were run at only 2 5 to 30 pct of their maximum rated amperage. In addition the attenuated beam was monitored before and after each reading. The attenuation of resonant wavelengths may be related to vapor pressure by the following relationships.

UNDER the names of Conservation, Social Justice, the New Nationalism, and Progressive Democracy, many earnest reformers are calling for a new system of Federal government to replace the one which they ascribe to our fathers, and declare to have been outgrown. They are proposing the lease by the United States of certain natural resources on the public domain, for the profit of the U. S. Treasury, instead of the sale of such resources to private citizens or associations of citizens. In the present paper, I shall try to show that this notion is neither new nor good. It is clear that the United States is owner, as well as sovereign, of public lands acquired through conquest or purchase from other nations, as it was owner of the public lands expressly ceded to it by the original thirteen States. Its policy with regard to such lands involves, therefore, two entirely distinct questions: What shall it do as owner ? and, What shall it do as sovereign ? The latter question, it must be confessed, has played but a small part in our history. All the prerogatives of sovereignty which were not explicitly conferred upon the Federal government by the original States were retained by them. The ownership or control of precious or other metals or minerals in the earth, for instance, was thus reserved to the several sovereign States. New York, South Carolina, and other States have passed laws on this subject, without regard to Federal authority. As new States have been successively admitted to the Union, the tacitly accepted theory has been,. that they thereby acquired all the reserved rights of the original States. These newer States largely outnumber the first. thirteen; and it is inconceivable that they would submit to any deprivation of sovereignty based on historical grounds. ZIRCONIUM has been produced on a pilot-plant scale for only a few years, but the potential uses have led a large number of research establishments to engage in a thorough study of the metal and its alloys. The work described in this paper is part of a cooperative project between the Bureau of Mines and the Air Materiel Command. The Zr-Cr system was one of the first investigated because of the possibilities of improving the properties at elevated temperatures, the chemical corrosion resistance, and the mechanical properties of zirconium in a manner similar to the enhancement of the properties of titanium by additions of chromium. There is no published work on the Zr-Cr system but from the similarity of the metals involved it was expected that it would be similar to the Zr-Fe' and Ti-Cr' systems. The materials used in this investigation were prepared in the Bureau of Mines laboratory at Albany, Ore. Zirconium was produced by magnesium reduction of zirconium tetrachloride, and a typical analysis is as follows: Fe, 0.06 pct; Ox, 0.08; N?, 0.01; C, 0.02; and other impurities such as Al, Pb, Ni, Ti, and Si less than 0.01 pct each. High purity chromium was prepared by treating crushed electrolytic chromium in a stream of dried and purified hydrogen." The resulting powder contained about 0.01 pct 0 and about 0.1 pct total metallic impurities. All alloys were prepared by arc-melting 50 g briquetted compacts of the desired composition in a Kroll-type" arc furnace using an inert atmosphere. The furnace was evacuated twice and backfilled with helium, which was gettered by melting a center zirconium button immediately before the alloys were melted. Alloys were remelted at least once to insure greater uniformity of composition and subsequently were annealed in vacuum at 1250°C for 48 hr. Fairly homogeneous alloys were obtained by this means; a slight loss of chromium from the surface by evaporation during the high temperature homogenization was noted. All alloys were analyzed for chromium and gave results in good agreement with the nominal composition. Spot checks on tungsten and nitrogen showed pick-up of these elements to be negligible. Over 70 alloys were prepared for use in this investigation; only the critical ones are shown in Table I. Alloys containing up to 10 pct Cr were amenable to hot working at 850°C and a number of these were sheath rolled to 1/16 in. thickness. Specimens were cut from the sheet for use as metallographic samples. For the thermal analysis a differential couple was used in conjunction with an X-Y recorder, the temperature of the specimen and the difference in ternperature between it and the standard nickel body were recorded simultaneously. Heating and cooling rates of 5°C per min were used. The sensitivity of the instrument was such that a difference in temperature between the specimen and standard equivalent to 0.1 mv produced a deflection of 1 in. on the recording chart. The chromel-alumel thermocouples were checked against a Bureau of Standards calibrated thermocouple. Melting-point determinations were made in a high vacuum induction furnace using an optical pyrometer. The pyrometer, calibrated against nickel, copper, and zirconium (iodide process) under near black body conditions, was focused on the base of a hole drilled in cylindrical samples. A North American Philips Geiger counter X-ray spectrometer was used for all diffraction studies. An apparatus is described whereby capillary pressure curves for porous media may be determined by a technique that involves forcing mercury under pressure into the evacuated pores of solids. The data so obtained are compared with capillary pressure curves determined by the porous diaphragm method, and the advantages of the mercury injection method are stated. Based upon a simplified working hypothesis, an equation is derived to show the relationship of the permeability of a porous medium to its porosity and capillary pressure curve, and experimental data are presented to support its validity. A procedure is outlined whereby an estimate of the permeability of drill cuttings may be made with sufficient acuracy to meet most engineering requirements. INTRODUCTION The nature of capillary pressures and the role they play in reservoir behavior have been lucidly discussed by Lev-rett', Hassler, Brunner, and Deah12, and others. As a result of these publications the value of determining capillary pressure curves for cores has come to be generally recognized within the oil industry. While considerable attention has been directed toward the subject in an effort to provide a reliable method of estimating percentages of connate water, it has been recognized that capillary pressure data may prove of value in other equally important applications. This paper describes a method and procedure for determining capillary pressure curves for porous media wherein mercury is forced under pressure into the evacuated pores of the solids. The pressure-volume relationships ob- tained are reasonably similar to capillary pressure curves determined by the generally accepted porous diaphragm method. The advantages of the method lie in the rapidity with which the experimental data can be obtained and in the fact that small, irregularly shaped samples, e.g., drill cuttings, can be handled in the same manner as larger pieces of regular shape such as cores or permeability plugs. Based upon a simplified working hypothesis, a theoretical equation will be derived which relates the capillary pressure curve to the porosity and permeability of a porous solid, and experimental data will be presented to support its validity. This relationship aplied to capillary pressure data obtained for drill cuttings by the procedure described provides a means for predicting the permeability of drill cuttings. METHODS FOR DETERMINING CAPILLARY PRESSURES Several techniques have so far been employed in determining capillary pressure curves and these fall into two principal categories: (1) Liquid is removed from, or imbibed by, the core through the medium of a high displacement pressure porous diaphragm (2) Liquid is removed from the core which is subjected to high centrifugal forces in a centrifuge4,'. There are? however, certain limitations inherent in both methods. The greatest capillary pressure which can be observed by method (I), above, is determined by the maximum displacement pressure procurable in a permeable diaphragm which at the present time appears to be less than 100 psi. An even more serious limitation of the diaphragm method is imposed hy the fact that several days may be required to reach saturation equilibrium at a given pressure; hence, the time re- quired to obtain a well-defined curve may be measured in terms of weeks. Furthermore, to date, no suitable technique for handling relatively small, irregularly shaped pieces of rock, such as drill cuttings, has been reported and, therefore, measurements must be made, in general, on cores, or portions thereof. The centrifuge method offers the distinct advantage over the porous diaphragm method of arriving at saturation equilibrium in a relatively short time by virtue of the elimination of the transfer medium for the liquid. The calculation of capillary pressures from centrifuge speeds is somewhat tediousa, however, and the equipment required is fairly elaborate. While there exists the possibility that this method might be adaptable to the determination of the capillary pressures of cuttings, this particular ramification has not been investigated, as far as is known. In view of the limitations of the two principal methods for determining capillary pressures, the apparatus described in the following sections has been devised in order that difficulties previously encountered might be circumvented. MERCURY INJECTION METHOD FOR DETERMINING CAPILLARY PRESSURES Theory The methods described above for determining capillary pressures are characterized by the fact that one of the fluids present within the pore spaces of the solid is a liquid which "wets" the solid, i.e., the contact angle which the liquid forms against the solid is less than 90" as measured through that phase. For these "wetting" liquids the action of surface forces is such that the fluid spontaneously fills the voids within the solid. These forces likewise oppose the withdrawal of the fluid from the pores of the solid.
