John Birkinbine was born Nov. 16, 1844, at Reading, Pa., the eldest son of H. P. M. Birkinbine, widely known as a hydraulic engineer. The family removed subsequently to Philadelphia, where, as a young man he established with his father the office now, continued by his sons, after more than 60 years. His education was received at public schools, the Friends' High School in Philadelphia, the Hill School at Pottstown, Pa., and the Polytechnic College of Pennsylvania, where his studies were interrupted in 1863-4 by service in the Union Army, which included participation in the battles at and around Gettysburg. Later, he devoted two years to work in a machine shop; and subsequently he became associated with the late P. L. Weimer, under the firm name of Weimer & Birkinbine, operating the Weimer Machine Works at Lebanon, Pa. Much of his work was in mining, metallurgy, and blast-furnace construction. As manager for the South Mountain Mining & Iron Co. he carried on experiments with various fuels for iron-ore smelting while maintaining the furnace in constant operation. The carefully recorded results obtained were widely published, and are referred to in text-books by other metallurgists as most complete. From his Philidelphia office he was sent to nearly every State, and to Canada and Mexico, for examinations, reports, constructions or im-provements in iron-ore mines, blast furnaces, iron works, water supplies, hydraulic development, irrigation projects, etc., and his engineering knowledge was requisitioned by several Eukopean corporations. A number of business trips were made to Mexico, beginning with a visit to the Cerro de Mercado at Durango,,before railroads were established in that. portion of Mexico, to make a critical examination and report on this "Iron Mountain." Later visits covered other localities and engineering problems, familiarizing him with the major part of the iron industry in Mexico. The late disturbed political conditions in that Republic have retarded the probable enlargement, modernization, and improvement of much of the iron and steel industry of Mexico, upon which he investigated and . reported for various capitalists on both continents. One interesting subject included in these reports was a proposed electric furnace, to be operated by energy from water power.

ThIS discussion describes a method for the addition of small amounts of oxygen to columbium (niobium) in an accurate and reproducible manner. The method is based on the complete reduction by columbium of a carefully weighed amount of another metal oxide. The equilibrium Pq associated with Cb-CbO mixtures is extremely low, e.g., 10"25 atm at 100O°C, and the pressures over Cb-0 solutions are even lower. The equilibrium Pq associated with a given metal-metal oxide mixture can be easily obtained, with the aid of a Richardson-Jeffes chart.' Although columbium should effectively reduce almost any metal-metal oxide combination, the proper choice of a metal-metal oxide system is complicated by the low rate of oxygen transport in the gas phase at low oxygen pressures and the difficulty in reducing any columbium suboxide formed during the reduction of the oxygen source material. Thermodynamically, oxide formation on columbium will be avoided so long as the oxygen partial pressure over the columbium is below the equilibrium pressure associated with the mixture Cb-CbO. The logical choice of a source for oxygen would appear to be a mixture of Cb-CbO, since oxide formation would be precluded by nucleation difficulty. But calculations using the kinetic theory of gasses indicate that, for a temperature of 900°C, the reaction would proceed too JAMES D. Grinding costs are an important item in cement manufacture, and the cost of power is one of the large items in grinding costs. Even where power is of secondary importance, cost items dependent on mill capacity are influenced by the efficiency with which the mill uses power. Tube mills typify the grinding mills most generally used in cement plants, though other types are in use. Tube mills have been widely criticized as being extremely inefficient, and this feeling regarding them has led to many attempts to design more efficient grinding equipment. Other types may be an improvement over tube mills, but the improvement has certainly not been revolutionatry, at least as applied to clinker grinding. The very fact that there is doubt regarding the relative efficacy of various types of mills is an indication that an adequate basis for an analysis of performance is lacking. The development of methods of analyzing mill performance has been hampered by the lack of a suitable method for measuring the work actually done in pulverizing. There has been no acceptable standard to which mill performance might be compared. As a consequence, it was not known whether the margin of possible improvement in pulverizing operations was large or small. Even direct comparison of different types of mills was seldom possible because most plants had only one type of mill for each type of service. Comparisons between plants were difficult because of differences in the grinding characteristics of various clinkers. Some recent developments complete a chain of circumstances that place the cement industry in a particularly fortunate position for the study of its clinker-pulverizing operations. Modern investigators of grinding phenomena have generally agreed that the best measure of mill performance is the production of new surface. For most materials this measure of performance is largely theoretical and has a rather remote connection with the practical aims of the grinding operation. In clinker grinding, on the other hand, surface area is intimately connected with the properties conferred on the cement by grinding. Before describing the electrostatic processing of feldspar, it might be well to review some of the basic definitions and terminology of feldspars. The feldspar minerals constitute a group of alumino-silicates of potassium, sodium, and calcium. Barium feldspar sometimes occurs naturally but is very rare. Hardness varies between 6 and 6.5 and specific gravity between 2.5 and 2.8. Color is generally white or pale shades of red, yellow, or green. The approximate chemical composition of the principal feldspars is given in Table I. The albite (sodium aluminum silicate) and an orthite (calcium aluminum silicate) feldspars are the end members of a series called plagioclase. These two molecules form a complete solid solution series ranging from pure soda feldspar at one end to the pure lime feldspar at the other end. Intermediate solid solutions are known as oligoclase, andesine, labradorite, and bytoconite. The general structure throughout this series is the same. Sodium and calcium may replace each other and silicon and aluminum may replace each other in the structure.

Single-crystal wafers of zirconium have been exposed to 680°F neutral water. The single crystals were of known orientation and weight-gain data as a function of crystal orientation were obtained. These data show that all the crystal faces studied obeyed a cubic rate law out to the time of transition whereupon the crystals corroded at an approximately linear rate. The time to transition varied from 114 days for (1074) crystals to about 325 days for the (2130) faces. The epitaxial relationship be-tween metal and monoclinic oxide was found to be (0001) H (111) and [1120] 11 [101]. A black tight adherent oxide layer was formed on the crystals in the pretransition range. This black oxide was found to be monocrystalline. The white corrosion product produced after transition was found to be polycrys-talline but highly oriented. X-ray line-broadening studies found that the black oxide was a highly strained structure whereas the white oxide was relatively strain-free. These results indicate a strain-induced re crystallization or fragmentation accompanies the change from protective black oxide to nonprotective white oxide. ZIRCONIUM alloys have been used quite extensively in high-temperature aqueous environments. Alloy additions can be made to commercial sponge zirconium which enhance the corrosion resistance of the zirconium in both water and steam media, which raise the tolerance limit for certain impurities detrimental to corrosion resistance, and which reduce the amount of free hydrogen pickup during corrosion. The development of the corrosion-resistant zirconium alloys has been a long and tedious job involving trial and error methods. This technique has been necessary because of a lack of fundamental data and hence understanding of the corrosion mechanisms. The objective of the work described herein was to provide some fundamental data with respect to the aqueous corrosion of zirconium crystals as a function of the orientation of the exposed surfaces. Hg. The zirconium chunk was then cooled to below the transformation temperature (862°C) and reheated to 1200°C for 8 hr. The ultimate size of the zirconium grains increased with the number of cycles. Rapid or even furnace cooling through the transformation temperature produces a considerable amount of substructure which was intolerable in corrosion experiments as it would be in the study of any crystallographically dependent property. It was found that a high-temperature a-phase anneal for approximately 4 days reduced the substructure below the limits detectable by visual or X-ray means. Crystals so produced were carefully cut from the massive zirconium chunk and oriented by standard back-reflection Laue techniques. The crystals were then mounted in a goniometer head and, by using the three degrees of freedom available, slices on the order of 0.015 to 0.020 in. were cut parallel to any desired crystal plane. These slices were then carefully polished on both sides to produce smooth flat faces, pickled to remove about 0.002 in. per face, annealed for 1/2 hr at '750°C in a vacuum of approximately 10"5 mm Hg, flash pickled, and checked for orientation. The pickling solution was 45-45-10 vol pct HN0,-H20-HF and continuous agitation was provided to eliminate pitting of the slices. Any slice that was not within 2 deg of the desired orientation was discarded, and any evidence of substructure as indicated by the Laue spots was also grounds for discarding the sample. Thin slices were used for the corrosion tests because weight gain per area data could be obtained with only a minimum area exposed to the corrosive media that was not of the desired orientation. The thin single-crystal slices were of irregular shape and as a result the areas were determined by placing a crystal inside an inscribed square of known area, enlarging a picture of this assembly about X5, and tracing both the enlarged square and crystal with a planimeter. The zirconium used to produce these single crystals was crystal-bar grade, a typical analysis of which is given in Table I. An oxygen analysis on prepared crystals gave a concentration of 205 ppm. The hydrogen concentrations are believed to be less than 15 ppm due to the dynamic vacuum anneal given each crystal. Typical nitrogen values for zirconium treated in this manner are about 10 to 20 ppm. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Single-crystal wafers have been exposed to de-oxygenated, deionized water in static autoclaves.

A new method of reservoir evaluation called pulse-testins has been developed for describing formation properties between wells. Pulse-testing utilizes a sensitive differential-pressure gauge at a responding well to measure and record the response generated by a series of flow rate changes (pulses) at an adjacent or pulsing well. Since the pulse-test instruments have a sensitivity of about 0.001 psi, pulses of several hours or less in duration will generate a measurable response in most reservoirs. For this reason, many well pairs can be tested in a short period of time with little interference in field operations. Comparison of pulse-test results to conventional testing methods shows that the pulses obey unsteady-state, compressible-flow theory and thus provide a measure of both transmissibility (kh/µ) and storage (Fch). In additian, the method can be used qualitatively to describe communication across faults and between zones, and direction and tnagnitude of fracture trends. INTRODUCTION To obtain maximum usefulness of new reservoir analysis methods as well as to aid the field engineer in understanding local reservoir anomalies, improved methods are needed to describe heterogeneities in specific reservoirs. Optimum well spacing, equipment specifications, well completion design and especially the economics of pressure maintenance and secondary recovery programs depend on the extent and location of the heterogeneities that affect flow behavior in the field. One method for obtaining a measure of areal reservoir heterogeneity is an interference test. In the simplest interference test. constant-rate production or injection is initiated at one well and the effect of this flow is measured as pressure vs time at another well. Thus, during interference tests the flow characteristics of the formation are determined in situ. Despite their obvious usefulness in reservoir delineation. interference tests have not enjoyed frequent usage. Reasons for this have been the weeks or months required in many fields to obtain a pressure response measurable with conventional gauges, and the interruption of routine field operation during the field-wide shut-in normally required during these long times. Also, only average properties of the relatively large volume of the reservoir disturbed during these long times can normally be obtained — variations in properties between individual wells cannot be delineated. To eliminate these drawbacks of conventional tests, a special reservoir description technique called pulse testing' has been developed. Pulse-testing has several advantages that make it more convenient and practical for field use than interference tests. Valid tests are more certain because use of a series of flow disturbances gives rise to a diagnostic pressure response that can more readily be distinguished from unknown trends in reservoir pressure and other "noise." The time required is only a fraction of that for an interference test because a special, high-sensitivity differential pressure gauge can detect a much smaller pressure change. Variations in properties between individual wells can be delineated because of the relatively small volume of the reservoir disturbed during these short times. Finally, wells other than the pulsing and responding wells do not have to be shut in or carefully regulated.

MY first reflection on the subject assigned to me by the officers of this symposium was that a critical description of these lesser characters in the cast of inanimate actors now before us under the title "The Role of Metals in New Transportation" would be about as well received as the description of a horse race in terms of harness buckles and jock-ey's buttons. The word "new" in the title of this symposium seems to shout strong aluminum and stainless steel, unless we transfer our attention to transpor-tation on another planet where the strength-density ratios may require very different engineering treatment. To load a speaker with the "heavier nonferrous metals" amidst the airy consideration of flying or 20th century gliding along the earth and through water, like Hermes, the messenger of the immortals, and expect an instructive or enlivening flight into the area of current exploitation and popular interest in transportation would, of course, require the performance of a miracle or at least the exhibition of genius to which I can lay no claim. But copper and nickel, headliners in other classifications, are also indis-pensable as components of the important new structural materials of transportation, and together with lead, tin and zinc perform many minor or contributory functions in this field that may indeed be con-sidered well-nigh indispensable. A complete and well planned fabric of classification, explanation and critique of even these secondary functions would take much time, and I cannot hope in the 25 minutes or so alloted for the purpose to offer more than a rambling treatment, in which a thread of continuity will be sought by anchorage to one after another of the following attributes or appurtenances of the moving vehicle: 1. The machinery and accessories. 2. The framework and superstructure, and the line or travelway. 3. Light, heat, power, water, sanitary and housekeeping services. 4. Embellishment, or style.

The accompanying charts are presented to extend and improve a chart published under the title "A Chart to Provide Approximate Correction for Temperature and Deviation from Boyle's Law."' The applicability of this earlier chart was limited by the fact that it was based on the work of Burke and Keyes² and Kvalnes and Gaddy3 whose experiments were conducted with pure methane, the adjustments suggested for natural gases of higher specific gravity were unsatisfactory except within limited ranges of temperatures and pressures, and precise interpolation was difficult. The extensive work of G. G. Brown, D. L. Katz and their associates on the heavier natural gases has provided better bases for the needed corrections, and the present charts. which are based largely on their work, are intended to simplify the computations involved. The design of the charts has been changed by plotting temperatures as a function of pressure and correction factor, on a semilogarithmic or "ratio" grid, which gives fairly even spacing of the graphs and simplifies interpolation. Charts have been prepared for natural gas with specific gravities of .60, .65, .70, .75 and .80. Property changes produced by irradiation of Al-0.4 wt pet Li alloys at 270°C to a burnup of 0.155 pct of all atoms are described. Metallographic evidence of the formation of internal pores and the concentration of gases at grain boundaries is shown. Some conclusions are drawn concerning desirable property characteristics for resistance to radiation swelling. RADIATION induced gases are of great practical significance in nuclear engineering since they affect the behavior of fissionable fuels and control rod materials. In fuels the gases xenon and krypton are the major offenders, producing serious em-brittlement at low irradiation temperatures and gross swelling at high irradiation temperatures. In control rod materials containing boron, the production of helium from the B 10 (n, 0) Li7 reaction produces similar reactions. Since the trend in reactor design is for operation at increasingly high temperatures, the phenomenon of high-temperature swelling by these induced gases has been the subject of considerable recent study. The objectives of such work have been to obtain engineering information and quantitative data on the effects in specific fuels and control rods and to obtain further understanding of the mechanism of gas damage so that more intelligent corrective steps can be made. Analogue systems are often useful for the latter objective and in this case alloys containing Li are suitable in view of the reaction Li6 + n - He4 + He 4. Both products are gases and no serious radiation problem is produced to complicate post irradiation handling. Considerable caution is, of course, necessary in any operations in which tritium release is possible. The present program was initiated to provide a detailed study of the effects of He + H3 generated by irradiation in Li-bearing alloys. The results on Mg-Li solid solution alloys have been reported elsewhere.' This paper presents information on irradiation of an A1-0.4 pct Li alloy in which the lithium was present as highly enriched Li6 in order to maximize the radiation burnup. PROCEDURE The original intent in the selection of the alloy content was to have Li in solid solution at all temperatures. It became apparent, however, that the solubility of Li in A1 was substantially lower than that reported in the original reference consulted.' This was substantiated by the work of Nowak3 who reported solubility of less than 0.01 pct Li at 100°C. The alloy used (0.4 pct Li) was therefore two phase at room temperature. The irradiation temperature was estimated to be about 270° C, and at that temperature all or almost all of the Li would be soluble under equilibrium conditions. The precise state of the alloy under irradiation is not known. Aluminum used was 99.996 pct purity (max. impurities Si 0.002 pct, Mg 0.001 pct, Fe 0.0005 pct, and Cu 0.0005 pct). The lithium was obtained from Oak Ridge National Laboratory; 96.1 + 0.1 pct of the lithium was ~i~, but chemical impurities were 0.25 pct Ca, 0.05 pct Fe, 0.02 pct Na, 0.02 pct Cu, 0.01 pct Sr, and 0.01 pct Ba. The two metals were melted in an alumina crucible in a resistance heated furnace in an atmosphere of helium. A l-in. ingot was cast in an iron mold, machined to %-in. round, hot swaged (350°C) to 0.080-in. round, cold swaged to 0.060-in. round, and finally cold drawn to 0.040-in. round. Four-inch wire lengths were then cut and annealed at 250°C for 4 hr in helium. Irradiations were carried out in a VT hole in the Argonne CP-5 reactor. The wires were held in an aluminum jig, sixteen wires per capsule, and were maintained in a helium atmosphere for maximum heat transfer. Eight wires of pure aluminum and eight of Al-Li alloy were placed in each capsule. Argome Laboratory statements were accepted as establishing flux and exposure levels. KARL A. PAULY,* Schenectady, N. Y.-We are deeply indebted to Mr. Hobart for a record of the actual experience of the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Co. with electrification. One of the essential features of this test is that it was made under actual operating conditions. In one of the western mining districts I was once discussing the electrification of a large hoist with a mining operator, who told me that they had made a very thorough test and that the results were such as to indicate that electrification was not warranted. When questioned regarding the test, he said that they had called on the mining college in the Territory for assistance, and one of the instructors and a group of students had made the test. They first cleaned the boilers and then operated them at a' continuous load, using the maker's guaranteed steam consumption per indicated horsepower as a guide in estimating the steam consumption under actual hoisting conditions. Such a test is absolutely valueless. The efficiency of the boilers 'is affected by the intermittent demands on the steam. The standby losses, as indicated by Mr. Hobart's paper, are quite equal to the actual fuel consumption required to do the work; very frequently, also, the cost of repairs is either omitted or underestimated. One noticeable feature of Mr. Hobart's tabulation is that there is no mention of steam consumption. Intentionally or otherwise, the steam-hoist builders have befogged the question by making a great point of the steam consumption of hoists. The operator is not at all concerned in steam consumption; it is the actual cost of operation that he is interested in, and it is a comparison between the cost of operation of the two systems, all factors being considered, that should determine the choice. The steam consumption, or its determination by test, is only one step in the problem of estimating the fuel consumption, which, in an actual installation, can be directly measured much more accurately, as was done by Mr. Hobart.

The Jeffrey Company Opens Branch in Seattle The Jeffrey Manufacturing Co. of Columbus, Ohio, announces the re-opening of its Northwestern Branch Office at Seattle, Wash., and the appointment of Mr. Percy E. Wright, Consulting Mechanical Engineer, as District Manager for Oregon, Washington, Alaska, British Columbia and Alberta. Mr. Wright, who has been in the Northwest since 1910, and whose connection with the Jeffrey company dates back to 1902, has' had a wide and varied experience and training in the handling of the Jeffrey line which will enable him to be of great assistance to customers in solving their elevating, conveying and transmission problems. Trade Catalogs To a majority of the public, the name 'DuPont suggests military powder-munitions of war. The DuPont Products Book A-430 (April, 1916) lists 251 distinct commodities made. and sold by this company, many of which are far removed from destructive work. Mining men are fully cognizant of the need for explosives in constructive work, but they may be surprised to know that side by side with the powder and dynamite this company manufactures such peaceful articles as substitute leather, combs and collar buttons. The substitute for leather is Fabrikoid, varying in weight from a quality light enough for bookbinding to one heavy enough for trunks and automobiles, and the combs and collar buttons (with scores of other articles) are made from Pyralin. The book also contains a long list of chemicals, and a shorter list of special products and miscellaneous materials such as charcoal, wood flour and saltpeter. The Jeffrey Manufacturing Co. of Columbus, Ohio, making elevating, conveying, crushing, screening and power transmission machinery, has just issued its. latest Bulletin, No. 177, :featuring self-propelling wagon and truck loaders for handling crushed stone, sand, gravel, clinker, coke, etc. These machines are described as having a capacity of 1 to 1 ½ cu. yd. of material per minute, with power to load crushed stone maximum size pieces through 3 ½ -in. ring and to load trucks or wagons in 3 or 4 min. The self-propelling device is designed to enable one man to operate the loader as it is fed into the pile, and to move the machine about under its own power.

A techno-economic assessment for the recovery of several elements from seawater is presented. Gold recovery has been used as an illustration for the economic evaluation of several processes. Current technology does not present any economically viable alternative to recover gold from seawater because its concentration is several magnitudes too low. However, with the increasingly larger availability of concentrated seawater, mainly from desalination and other processes, coupled with advances in technology, especially genetically modified specific microorganisms, may make the recovery of gold and other desired elements from seawater a reality in the near future.

It has been the custom of the Railroad Commission of Texas to hold hearings each month with respect to existence and imminence of waste of oil and gas in Texas and its prevention, and to issue orders restricting the production of oil to the reasonable market demands and allocating production to the various fields in Texas. The practice of designating the actual days during the month on which wells are to be shut down was discontinued in the order for November 1942, and orders issued thereafter contain only the number of shut-in and producing days for the month. Orders issued by the Railroad Commission are divided into two main subdivisions, the first a general shutdown order of all oil wells in the various fields in Texas, and second, the exception of certain fields to this general order. Table I shows the producing days for all of the fields in Texas for 1944 under the first of these classifications : The fields that have producing schedules varying from the general order may be divided roughly into three subdivisions, as follows: Table 2 shows the producing days for certain fields that were prorated as a group throughout 1944. Other fields which were occasionally included with this group were also prorated under the general order and by special orders. The producing days for these irregular fields are shown in Table 4. In Table 3 are listed fields that were exempted from any shutdown days during December 1944, the majority retaining this exception throughout 1944. Certain fields included in the general order were added to this group on the first day of the month shown.

Silica sand deposits are usually contaminated with various heavy minerals which must be removed to make the silica useful for flat-glass production. Research was undertaken to develop a better procedure for producing flat-glass-grade silica. Batch tests revealed that anionic detergent-type reagents had considerable promise. Pilot plant tests were run to compare the effectiveness of anionic detergent-type reagents with petroleum sulfonate in the removal of heavy minerals from a potential glass sand. Another slightly modified commercial procedure also was evaluated for comparison. In the pilot plant trials, utilization of the anionic detergent potation reagents did not produce quite as good results as petroleum sulfonate. It is likely that flat glass-grade sand could be produced with the anionic detergent reagents if more extensive pilot plant tests were conducted.

Literally hundreds of designs of mill liners are in use in current grinding operations, varying in contour from smooth to the roughest of surfaces, and in materials from scrap rail to alloy steels. A certain amount of variation in materials can be expected, owing to differences in local market conditions and the character of ores. However, when one attempts to rationalize the designs in current operations of a parallel nature, there is little that can be called standard practice. Designs and opinions of designs are as divergent as day and night. Somewhere in this maze there must be dues to better practice. The purpose of this paper is to examine the factors for consideration in liner design, and to propose a vigorous campaign of exploration in this phase of grinding operations. The paramount considerations in the choice of mill liners for a grinding operation are: (I) durability, in view of the cost, and (2) developed grinding capacity. Because of the strategic nature of grinding circuits in controlling the production of most mining operations: grinding capacity usually is the greater consideration. Grinding Capacity Mill liners affect grinding capacity in two ways: (I) by establishing dead space within a mill shell, which could be usefully occupied by live grinding media, and (2) by controlling the grinding action of the media. The extent to which liner thickness affects the potential volume of live grinding media, and thereby the grinding capacity, is shown in Table I. In a ball mill 7 ft. in diameter, for example, an inch of liner thickness reduces ball volume and corresponding grinding capacity by 5 per cent. With grinding capacity at a premium, this makes consideration something more than first cost of liner materials. A low-cost, voluminous material, made extra thick to secure adequate life, can be very expensive in terms of grinding capacity. On the other hand, in increased grinding capacity, a long-wearing material in a thinner pattern can save many times its value. From the standpoint of mechanics, the function of mill liners is to provide the means of driving or tumbling the load of grinding media.
