DURING the last half century a great amount, of ingenuity and energy has been devoted to the invention of appliances for the recovery of valuable minerals from very fine sands and-slimes. The reason for this is that in almost every, dressing plant the greatest losses of values, considered relatively as well as absolutely, occur in the treatment of slimes. The natural aim of mill operators to minimize these losses has in recent years received another impetus,, from the fact that the gradually diminishing occurrence of high-grade ores makes a more intense recovery of values from existing resources absolutely necessary for profitable operation. The results of such attempts are found in the appearance of a great number of machines and appliances which make it profitable to-day to rework old dumps, containing the tailings of older processes. A constantly growing difficulty of obtaining skilled labor and the increase in wages made it prohibitory to employ those types of machines which required much attention, and in the middle of the nineteenth century the various concentrating tables of the percussion type, which automatically discharge their products, began to take the .place of the intermittent tables, on which, when the bed had reached a certain thickness, operation had to be stopped in order to allow the skimming by hand of the separate layers formed on the table. In the course of. years, two general types of machines evolved for the treatment of fine sands and slimes :- The so-called concentrators and vanners, on the one hand, and the huddles and round tables on . the other.1 For the profitable treatment of the very finest slimes, round tables have as a last resort proved more satisfactory and economical than other machines.

This paper describes a short, simple well-testing procedure evolved from unsteady-state concepts to appraise wellbore damage in water-input wells. Input rates are changed at specific intervals over a 30-minute period and the wellhead pressure recorded at the end of each interval. From these data, the pressure drop due to the "skin" can be computed. This pressure drop in terms of psi/B/D of input rate is referred to as the "skin factor". Two of these variable-rate tests are required to determine change of wellbore damage and to evaluate well-treatment techniques. There are several advantages to the variable-rate procedure. The necessary data can be obtained with wellhead gauges and meters. There is little interference with normal operations. The short testing period eliminates many interpretative difficulties that come from interference from adjacent wells. The shut-in period required for standard tests before the plot of pressure vs log of time attains a straight line is often 12 hours or more. Such a time period is incronvenient, especially when a well must be tested repeatedly to evaluate change in wellbore characteristics. This variable-rate procedure has been successfully npplied to water-input wells in three fields. For some of the wells, skin factors were calculated from both the standard and the variable-rate tests. These results show good agreement. THEORY OF THE VARIABLE-RATE PROCEDURE In many waterflood input wells, the pressure in the wellbore differs from the pressure in the reservoir immediately adjacent to the well because of the restriction of flow through the skin of the well. If the true pressure of the reservoir at the well, p,, is that pressure which would exist in the well if no skin were present, and p,' is the actual pressure as measured in the well, this difference, is the skin effect. Fig. 1 shows the change in skin effect with change in flow rate. As the flow is reduced, the skin effect is reduced by an amount equal to the change in wellbore pressure minus the change in reservoir pressure. This report is concerned with fluid displacement in porous media, in those cases where viscous and gravitational forces control the displacement. Such a system would usually be found in a sand body of large physical dimensions such as an oil reservoir, although it is possible to create such a system in the laboratory. It is shown that the position of the fluid interface can be predicted by numerical calculations using a basic idea presented by Dietz. Fluid flow is considered in a vertical plane in a homogeneous, porous medium of sufficient thickness that the capillary transition zone is small in comparison with the total reservoir. A theory developed by Dietz' is used to make numerical calculations of the position of the fluid interface. The results for several conditions are compared with scaled model experiments. The results show that, for gas drive in a reservoir of steep dip, a relatively low flow rate can displace large volumes of oil before gas breakthrough. On the other hand, water injection at favorable mobility ratio and low dip may show best performance at high rates. Water tends to underride the oil and, given sufficient rime, will break through without much oil displacement. For certain conditions, which include relatively low flow rate, the interface is a straight line and its behavior is simple to calculate. At higher flow rates, the interface is unstable, and a numerical solution was programed for an automatic computer. In general, good agreement is shown between the fluid model and the computed results so long as gravitational forces have control. For a water drive at very unfavorable mobility ratio, many small water fingers appear. These viscous fingers are not controlled by the relatively small gravitational forces. When viscous fingering becomes the controlling factor, the mathematical model is oversimplified, and results do not check the fluid flow model. INTRODUCTION Present methods of reservoir analysis depend upon certain simplifying assumptions to obtain mathematical descriptions of practical use. Material-balance methods (Muskat2 or Tarner2) assume uniform fluid saturations in the entire reservoir, or in a few subdivisions of the reservoir. An unsteady-state flow calculation by West, er at considered pressure and saturation changes in flow to a well during solution gas drive, and neglected gravity effects. Results showed only a 4 per cent difference for ultimate oil recovery by the Muskat method, even though the case chosen for study was one in which unsteady-state effects should be high. The Buckley-Leverett5 method commonly assumes a one-dimensional flow system. It is applicable at high flow rates where viscous forces predominate over gravity forces. Simultaneous, parallel flow of the two fluids is assumed, and the concept of a fluid interface is not introduced. Permeabilities to each fluid for a given saturation must be known. The method is not applicable for a two-dimensional system where cross flow becomes possible. Less well known is the displacement equation derived by Dietz. This method is designed for two-dimensional flow systems and assumes a definable fluid interface within the porous medium. Dietz showed that, for a range of low flow rates, the interface would be stable. straight and at an angle of inclination which could be simply calculated. At a certain critical flow rate, the calculated interface tilt would equal the formation dip. For higher flow rates, a finger of displacing fluid would invade the displaced fluid. Dietz indicated that his method applied only to macroscopic reservoir behavior, while the Buckley-Leverett method applied to the small transition zone at the fluid interface. The examples worked out in this report are based on the fluid-displacement theory of Dietz. It is shown that the Dietz theory may be used to derive equations analogous to the Buckley-Leverett equations. In contrast to the Buckley-Leverett method, flow is considered in a plane rather than being limited to a line. Rather than a frontal advance, the movement of a fluid interface is followed. For flow rates substantially exceeding the critical rate and for high viscosity ratio, many fingers of invading fluid occur-—rather than the single finger assumed by Dietz. On the other hand, so long as some gravitational influence remains, the flow is not entirely parallel to the bedding planes as assumed by Buckley and Leverett; therefore, both methods fail to give an adequate descrip-

The transfer of material from the solid to the liquid states can be accomplished in several ways. It occurs by the application of heat in the more familiar metallurgical operations of melting but it can also be accomplished by solution in a liquid, as can occur in systems using liquid metals for heat-transfer media. The kinetics of this reaction were studied to learn more of the separate steps in the process. In the case of a pure material at its melting temperature, Te,A,, thermal energy must be supplied to the solid in an amount equal to the latent heat of fusion in order for the solid-to-liquid transfer to occur. The rate at which heat is supplied, and hence the rate of melting, is a function of the temperature gradients in the system. This phase transfer can also occur in the absence of temperature gradients in the system illustrated in Fig. 1, which is a partial phase diagram between the components A and B. The density changes that occurred on annealing cold-worked poly crystalline molybdenum, over the temperature range of 870" to 1630 SC, were determined. Increases in density were observed for recovery and the beginning of recrystallization. An initial decrease in density was observed during re-crystallization. A second decrease in density was observed after recrystallization was completed, as the microstructure changed from columnar grains to equiaxed gvains Both decreases in density were associated with an increase in gain boundary area to volume ratio. The second decrease in density was observed in the annealing range that immediately precedes secondary recrystallization as reported in the literature VARIOUS techniques have been used to identify the recovery, recrystallization, and grain growth processes that occur when cold-worked metals are annealed. As early as 1928 work was conducted that indicated measurable density changes occur when cold-worked single crystals of brass are annealed.' More recently, work by Murphy exhibited a corre- lation of density with microstructural changes observed on annealing cold-worked polycrystalline a brass.2 Other investigators have performed similar work on a brass and copper.324 In reviewing the literature, it was apparent that density work had been limited to fcc materials. Therefore, it was the purpose of this investigation to determine the density changes that accompany annealing the cold-worked bcc material, molybdenum. Two degrees of cold work, 30 and 90 pct reduction of cross-sectional area by rolling, were selected for this study. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE High-purity vacuum arc-cast molybdenum was used in this study, the principal impurity being carbon in the amount of 80 ppm. The final rolling reductions were made at 1200°C in grooved rolls to provide 5/8-in.-diam rod. Density specimens 0.500 in. diam by 1.5 in. long were machined from the bar stock. The specimens were ground to the final dimensions to provide a smooth surface. Density measurements were made using a hydrostatic technique similar to that used by ~urphy.' This type of equipment permitted weighing in liquid immediately after the air weighing. During each weighing the temperature of the air and liquid was controlled to within 0.0l°C. This was accomplished by sealing the analytical balance in an air-tight brass chamber and surrounding it by an insulated wooden case. The coal industry was beset with work stoppages and strikes throughout the year, and there was some loss in markets to oil and gas. These conditions, along with the mild decline in industrial activity, the steel strike, and the reduction in exports, contributed to an unfavorable year for the industry. All coal mines are working three days a week at the time of writing, and in estimating production for the year, it will be assumed that the mines will continue to work on that basis through December. Total production of bituminous coal in 1949 is estimated at 420 million tons, which is 179,518,229 tons under the production in 1948. Anthracite production is expected to reach 39,400,000 tons as compared with 57,139,948 tolls in 1948, a loss of 17,739,948 tons. Coal stocks, as of January 1, 1949, were 69,373,000 tons but at the end of the year will have dropped to approximately 22 million tons. (written discussion?).- I embrace ace the opportunity to take part in a discussion of Mr. Woodruff's paper because a successful discerning of what actually constitutes pet-roliferous areas from the geologists' standpoint is worthy of our endeavors, not only from the intellectual side, but also because it may lead, as Mr. Woodruff hopes, to the more certain establishment of principles that can be applied to other continents in exploiting them for petroleum. This discussion will also embrace the results of two other recent papers, one by Alexander W. McCoy and one by Maurice G. Mehl.1 Sources of Petroleum.-Mr. Woodruff is agreed that petroleum comes from plants and animals, or possibly from both, and that it has ac-cumulated by migration into reservoir rocks. These reservoir rocks must of course be porous to become catch basins for the oil and gas, and then, too, their present structures are variable, as they occur in anticlines, domes, terraces, etc. , The structures, he states, are more widespread than are the oil pools, and the same is true for the reservoir rocks. The stress-strain behavior of the gold single crystals in easy glide was found to be affected by the specimen dimension which is parallel to the projection of the Burgers vector of the primary-slip system. The larger this dimension is, the larger is the slope of easy glide. Previously severa1 investigators attributed the size effects to either the existence of surface films or the grip constraints. However, in this experiment both of these possible causes were not present. It is proposed that the length of slip path (defined as the crystal dimension parallel to the Burgers vector of the primary system) is the controlling factor in the size effect observed in gold. Since the days of Newcomen and Watt, when men first sought to turn the energy of fuels to useful purposes, coal-generated steam has supplied most of the power needed for both stationary and mobile applications. The low efficiency and large water requirements of the nineteenth century steam-power plant caused many engineers to turn their thoughts toward more direct means of converting heat into power. As far back as 1791, John Barber secured an English patent on a combination' which he might well have called a "gas turbine." He proposed to generate producer gas from coal or charcoal, to burn it under pressure in air obtained from a reciprocating compressor, and to drive a turbine wheel with the resultant hot combustion products. With the optimism characteristic of the inventor, he hoped that the turbine would not only operate his compressor but also perform useful work. There is no record that Barber ever built his machine, but if he had done so he would have learned that useful power can result from such a combination only when both turbine and compressor are highly efficient and when the temperature of the gas entering the turbine is not far below 1000°F. Hot-air prime movers continued to attract attention, and both Stirling in England and Ericsson in America2 built reciprocating engines that operated with some success upon coal-heated air. The internal-combustion engine, burning liquid fuels, supplanted the hot-air type, and, for the first time, challenged the supremacy of both the steam cycle and its familiar fuel, coal. Liquid Fuels Compete with Coal As the increasing use of the automobile multiplied the demand for gasoline, the supply of residual fuel increased rapidly, and heavy oil declined in price to the point where it became competitive with coal. First in the marine field and later in stationary plants in areas adjacent to refineries, oil began to be widely used. Oil's greater convenience and higher heating value per pound of weight or per cubic foot of bunker space have caused it to take over much of the marine field. The introduction of the highly efficient diesel engine, capable of burning a fuel that is cheaper than gasoline, again threatened the position of coal, for the operating costs of the diesel became directly competitive with those of coal-burning equipment. In isolated power plants and smaller marine installations, the diesel provided the medium by which oil again successfully invaded fields formerly dominated by coal. The diesel engine, provided with an electrical transmission, found an excellent application in railroad service. It is recognized that ingot structure is important in determining the quality of finished steel. Such elements of ingot structure as the size, shape and distribution of primary crystals; the size, shape and distribution of shrinkage cavities; the degree and kind of segregation (both macro and micro); the distribution of nonmetallic impurities and gas cavities are each the result of solidification phenomena. 'These structural features vary with variations in ingot practice. Their control requires a knowledge of their correlation with the variables of ingot practice. The structures of full-sized commercial steel ingots have been studied extensively by the Steel Ingots Committee of the Iron and Steel Institute.l This work has contributed much to our knowledge of ingot structure and the factors that control it. These investigations of necessity have been limited in scope because of their costliness and the great amount of time required. Studies of the structure of small steel ingots have not been very satisfactory because of the rapid rate of freezing of the ingots. Their structures are thus difficult to resolve and to interpret. Medium sizes of steel ingots in the ranges of 150 to 500 lb. do offer opportunity for study, but their cost also becomes greater and their use less expeditious. Experimental models for the study of steel-ingot structure have been made of nonferrous metals. Gathmann2 used lead-tin alloys and reported that they were satisfactory for determination of the location of the major shrinkage cavities and the Liplanes of weaknessv resulting from the pattern of crystallization. Certain features of mold design have been illustrated by these results. Bezdenezhnihk3 has used copper and aluminum ingots similarly and has shown the effect of mold-wall thickness on the depth of columnar grains. These studies of nonferrous models have been useful, but their results have been limited because the analogy with steel ingots obviously is not a close one. Model wax ingots have also been useful in pointing out important features of mold design. Gathmann4 watched the solidification of wax ingots, through a glass-walled mold, and has reported the effects of mold type on the location of the shrinkage cavities. Segregation was simulated by using a mixture of paraffin and stearine and adding a red dye that on freezing segregated preferentially to the stearine. Brearley5 also used wax models to determine the effects of some of the principal features of mold design. Carlsson and Hultgren6 dsed stearic acid to show that the columnar crystals of ingots tend to slope upward progressively from the mold wall toward the center of the ingot. THE difficulties inherent in table concentration operations as applied to gold, silver, lead and zinc ores, are accentuated in the scheelite mill, which has a flowsheet that is similar in general principles. The narrow "spread" in the specific gravity between scheelite and the usual gangue in which it occurs often makes its clean separation extremely difficult and in some cases impracticable. The problem is further complicated by the extreme friability of the mineral and its inordinate tendency to "slime," particularly where fine grinding is necessary and wet grinding methods are employed. The physical aspect of the occurrence of scheelite in the ores, the kind and character of the rock in which the mineral is present, its hardness, friability and the specific gravity of its constituents, as well as like characteristics of the associated mineral-spyrite, pyrrhotite, sphalerite, and others, all have a bearing on the successful milling of crude ores and the production of a concentrate that is marketable with minimum price penalty or none at all. Most tungsten deposits are considered low grade when the limiting factor of low percentage recovery by gravity methods is borne in mind. The great majority of deposits developed or in process of development carry from 0.4 to 1.0 per cent tungstic oxide. Ore carrying 1 per cent is considered good grade; 0.7 to o.8 per cent, fair, and below that figure, low grade. Steady mill feed averaging upward of 1.0 per cent WO3 is exceptional. Inasmuch as buying specifications demand a 60 per cent WO3 content, the mineral content of the ores as mined must be concentrated to at least that degree. A few companies have constructed chemical plants for the treatment of their complex concentrates and low-grade flotation product, but the smaller operator must rely on table concentration, borrowing the tools and to a large extent the methods of his predecessors in the gold, silver, lead and zinc mills. Whether these are the best tools and methods that can be devised is an open question. Except in rare instances, table concentration, however carefully conducted, does not yield a satisfactory final recovery of the mineral content in headings as indicated by chemical determinations of tungstic oxide content. A saving of 6o to 65 per cent is considered fair, and an average 80 per cent recovery, exceptional. Each scheelite ore body is a separate problem. Details of handling that give best results in one case may not be successfully operative at a property on the same contact zone and but a short distance removed. Supplementary treatment of tailings by flotation may be successful in producing a low-grade concentrate of around 15 per cent W03, which is adapted to further treatment chemically at a given property and entirely unsuccessful at another. This problem constitutes another of the unanswered questions. The following paragraphs relate solely to the beneficiation of scheelite ores by table concentration and supplementary methods.

Certain adequately developed mining districts give complete three-dimensional patterns of ore bodies as clusters rising from roots in basement rocks with details controlled by structure of cover rocks. Examples are Goodsprings, Tintic, Bisbee, Leadville, Hedley, Eureka, Ely and Goldfield. In these and others the controlling structures in both basement and cover rock are elements of the neighboring regional structure and have been produced by rock movements in harmony with continental adjustments, which are usually steep tear faults in basement and thrust crumples in cover. Invariably the structures and movements in the districts have long geologic history and result from intersecting or superimposed deformations of different ages. Salt Lake districts show intersecting Uinta and Cordilleran elements; Colorado districts show intersecting pre-Cambrian and Tertiary elements, and Bisbee shows Tertiary superimposed on fina1 Paleozoic folding. Thus the position of districts has been determined by the patterns of North American orogenic belts, which make crossroads in Rocky Mountains and blocks of superimposed deformation in Sierra Nevada, northwest Coastand Canadian Coast Ranges. Essential function of repeated deformation is to strengthen rock, as from shale to slate to schist to gneiss, and thus make it competent to carry channels to depth with or without addition of intrusives. The essence of a mining district is the presence of such competent rocks with long-lived, deep, penetrating breaks reopened to permit passage of heat and associated products from depths to surface. It is suggested that melts such as magmas; metamorphism up to and including granitization; alteration, such as orthoclase-quartz or quartz-sericite or garnet, and also mineralization, may all be by-products of such heat escape along channels made by tectonic forces at specific foci. Magnitudes of Districts (Fig. 1) Any synthesis of ore deposits must deal with comparable units. Certain adequately developed mining districts give complete three-dimensional patterns of ore bodies as clusters rising from roots in basement rocks with details controlled by structure of cover rocks. Examples are Goodsprings, Tintic, Bisbee, Leadville, Hedley, Eureka, Ely and Goldfield. In these and others the controlling structures in both basement and cover rock are elements of the neighboring regional structure and have been produced by rock movements in harmony with continental adjustments, which are usually steep tear faults in basement and thrust crumples in cover. Invariably the structures and movements in the districts have long geologic history and result from intersecting or superimposed deformations of different ages. Salt Lake districts show intersecting Uinta and Cordilleran elements; Colorado districts show intersecting pre-Cambrian and Tertiary elements, and Bisbee shows Tertiary superimposed on fina1 Paleozoic folding. Thus the position of districts has been determined by the patterns of North American orogenic belts, which make crossroads in Rocky Mountains and blocks of superimposed deformation in Sierra Nevada, northwest Coastand Canadian Coast Ranges. Essential function of repeated deformation is to strengthen rock, as from shale to slate to schist to gneiss, and thus make it competent to carry channels to depth with or without addition of intrusives. The essence of a mining district is the presence of such competent rocks with long-lived, deep, penetrating breaks reopened to permit passage of heat and associated products from depths to surface. It is suggested that melts such as magmas; metamorphism up to and including granitization; alteration, such as orthoclase-quartz or quartz-sericite or garnet, and also mineralization, may all be by-products of such heat escape along channels made by tectonic forces at specific foci. ALTHOUGH chronologically, the Sb-Bi system was the first one studied by the writer, the theoretical basis of the equations used in this paper is fully discussed in the writer's paper on the iron-carbon system,1 because he believed that many would be more interested in the iron-carbon alloys. He suggests, therefore, that the reader consult that paper to familiarize himself with the theoretical aspect of the thermodynamic treatment outlined herein. This paper is divided into two parts: Part I deals with the Sb-Bi system and Part II deals with the lead-rich side of the Sb-Pb system. Although the former system has not much practical interest now, it has great theoretical interest in that it, is the one system that for a long time was thought to have (and under specific conditions still has) an anomalous solidus, which no amount of physical investigation could adequately account -for. The latter system of course, is particularly interesting in the lead-rich end. It will be shown that the thermodynamic method is capable of predicting reliably the equilibrium position of the solidus, and thus acts as a check on the experimentally derived solidus.

The sulphation roast-leach process for complex sulphides results in phase changes due to roasting and leaching. The phases in the calcine, and in the neutral and hot acid leach residues were identified and their degree of liberation determined in order to design and Interpret separation tests on the residues. The hot acid leach residue was composed of hematite, silica, and lead sulphate with some associated silver. Magnetic separation was selected as the process for producing a lead concentrate, as the non-magnetic product. Separation was limited by -1 pm hematite reporting to the product, and hematite/lead sulphate agglomerates reporting to the magnetics.
