The Motor Truck Sections of the 20th Annual Automobile Shows of 1920, to be held in the 8th Coast Artillery Armory, New York, Jan. 3 to 10, 1920, and in the International Amphitheatre, Chicago, Jan. 24 to 31, 1920, will he the largest and most comprehensive exhibitions of the kind ever held. WHILE rare earths are reported to be widely distributed in nature and are not really rare," in practice, there are only a few minerals which are sufficiently rich in rare earths to serve as practical sources. Perhaps the best known of these is monazite which is a phosphate mineral containing rare earths and thorium. This mineral occurs as a dense brown sand in gravel beds and is particularly rich in the light rare earths of the cerium subgroup. This mineral is processed commercially for its thorium, cerium, and lanthanum content, and, consequently, furnishes rich concentrates from which neodymium, praseodymium, samarium, europium, and gadolinium may be obtained. Unfortunately, monazite is rather lean in rare earths heavier than gadolinium. A second mineral which is rich in the light rare earths is bastnasite, a fluoro-carbonate. Extensive deposits of this ore have been discovered in the western United States and have received considerable newspaper publicity in recent years. While bastnasite is very rich with respect to cerium, lanthanum, and neodymium, it contains even less heavy rare earths than does monazite. One of the better sources of heavy rare earths of the yttrium subgroup is gadolinite, a black silicate rock from which the rare-earth content can be extracted readily by acid leaching. It is obtained chiefly from Norway at the present time, although there are known deposits in the United States. Other sources of heavy rare earths include fergu-sonite, euxenite, and samarskite which are refractory tantalo-columbate ores. These minerals require caustic fusion or reduction to carbides with carbon before the rare-earth content can be extracted. All of the minerals which are rich in the heavy rare earths contain yttrium as a major constituent. After the rare earths have been extracted as a group from an ore by chemical means, it is generally convenient to precipitate them from acid media with oxalic acid in order to eliminate certain non-rare-earth impurities such as iron, beryllium, etc., which are usually present. The oxalate can then be readily ignited to R2O3. The oxide can be dissolved in acid and is the starting point for subsequent separation into the pure components. Perhaps the principal reason why the rare earths have not been studied as extensively as other elements of the periodic table, whose natural abundances are comparable, is that they are extremely difficult to separate from each other by the usual chemical means. Prior to 1945, the separation of one trivalent rare earth from another was a laborious process. All separations were based on repeated fractionation processes, i.e., fractional precipitation, fractional decomposition, fractional crystallization, etc. These processes were repeated from a few hundred to many thousands of times in order to obtain individual rare-earth salts of reasonable purity. Of course, mention should be made that, in the few cases where a rare earth could be oxidized or reduced to a valence state other than three, more conventional chemical means could be utilized to separate the oxidized or reduced ion from the other normally trivalent rare earths. The ionic states which deserve special mention are CeIV, SmII, Eu11, and Yb11. When it is possible to remove an element of the series efficiently, due to an optional valence state, its immediate neighbors also become easier to isolate. For example, binary mixtures of lanthanum and cerium, and praseodymium and cerium can be obtained by a relatively small number of fractional operations. The tetravalent state of cerium then allows the complete resolution of the binary mixtures by ordinary chemical means. Although the tetravalent state of cerium has been known for a long time, the divalent states of samarium, europium, and ytterbium were not used extensively in separations prior to 1930 because they are relatively unstable in aqueous media.'-" No attempt will be made to give a comprehensive review of the extensive literature dealing with the separation of rare earths. Rather, this paper will be confined to a review of those methods which have been developed at Iowa State College during recent years, and which have proved extraordinarily successful for the isolation of highly pure rare earths in quantity. It was obvious that, if pure rare earths were to become generally available, methods would have to be developed wherein the thousands of fractional operations made necessary by the similarity of rare-earth properties could be performed automatically. The development of chromatographic techniques and ion-exchange resins appeared to offer a mechanism by which this objective could be accomplished. A number of early attempts were made to separate rare earths by these means; for example, Russell and Pearce12 passed a mixture of rare earths through a cation-exchange column and reported

A LUCID, thorough and powerful review of the impact of your tax laws on mining operations has already been presented by Granville S. Borden*. He has brought into focus and relief the pressure-points at which the shoe pinches most, has suggested some remedial measures, and enunciated much sound doctrine about the interrelationship and interplay of taxation policy and mining activity. Under the heading "What Every Lawmaker Should Know", he laid down the fundamental proposition that "the magnitude of our mineral resources varies inversely with the magnitude of the taxes levied upon them." With this, as with his other major premises, all mining men must be in hearty concurrence. There can be no doubt that a flourishing and expansive future for the mining industry in this country, in Canada, or anywhere else will depend on the thoroughness with .which these fundamental propositions are grasped by legislators, by national policy-makers and by public opinion at large.

J. V. N. DORR, New York, N. Y.-I have read Mr. Eames' excellent paper on this' subject with great interest, for besides being connected with the design and installation of the first modern countercurrent decantation plant, he was associated with me in the development of the thickener in the Black Hills some years earlier, and has now been operating the largest plant that has used this method of treatment. His, discussion, of the influence of different factors on the results obtained is quite thorough, but several features I think may not be apparent to the reader who has not studied the subject carefully. 1. Grade of Ore That Can Be Treated.-Mr. Eames has shown graphically that' the assay of all solutions increases directly as the grade of the ore treated. He has not emphasized, however, the fact that, as most operators prefer to keep the assay of pregnant solutions down below a certain figure in order to insure complete precipitation, an increase in ore value beyond a certain point means a proportional increase in solution precipitated and therefore not only an increase in the percentage of dissolved gold recovered, but an actual descrease in tailing loss. The importance of the influence of the percentage of moisture in the underflow on loss is made clear, and I. may add that unless it is quite evident that pulp can be safely settled to 50 per cent. solids, or more, it is usually advisable to use a continuous filter at the end of. a decantation plant to reduce losses in cyanide and gold. Dissolution in Thickeners.-The influence of a change of solution on silver dissolution has long been emphasized and most gold operators have. recognized the annoying way in which a gold ore after being agitated until nothing more can be dissolved will loosen up again when almost ready for the dump after the dissolved metal has been removed by decantation or filtration. Continuous decantation gives favorable conditions for this additional dissolution and a chance to recover most of what is thus dissolved. This is especially true if an extra tank is used in the series and barren solution added at the second tank from the end instead, of the first, as shown in Mr. Eames' Fig. 1. It can be calculated that the use of this tank will reduce the mechanical loss of cyanide by one-third and cut the gold loss as well; but the saving in gold or silver that may dissolve when the pulp is first diluted with weak solution may be as important.

A considerable quantity of experimental hydrocarbon K-factor data has been correlated as a function of component identity, temperature, pressure and convergence pressure. To utilize these correlations effectively, convergence pressure must be determined accurately, particularly for volatile mixtures near their critical states. This paper presents phase diagrams that illustrate physically the meaning of convergence pressure. A new method, referred to hereafter as the "critical composition method", will be outlined for calculating convergence pressure. An example calculation has been included to illustrate how to use this new technique. INTRODUCTION The principle of hydrocarbon phase composition calculations as applied to such diverse problems as optimizing separator performance or predicting fluid compositions at various stages of reservoir depletion is the same. Usually, temperature, pressure and the numbers of moles of the various components of the fluid contained in a given volume are known. Questions answered by the phase calculation are what fraction of the total mass of fluid exists in each of the equilibrium phases, and what are the mole fractions of the various components in the two phases? To answer these questions the Natural Gasoline Supplymen's Assoc. (NGSMA) has correlated a considerable quantity of K-factor data as a function of temperature, pressure, component identity and convergence pressure.l To use these correlations to obtain the best answers possible, one must be able to calculate the convergence pressure. This is particularly true for over-all fluid compositions in the neighborhood of the critical state. STATEMENT OF THEORY Use of convergence pressure as a correlating parameter is based on a postulate similar to the law of corresponding states used in correlating PVT data of hydrocarbon gases. This postulate, which proposes convergence pressure as a correlating parameter, has been stated as follows: "The equilibrium vaporization constant for one component in a complex system is the same as the equilibrium constant at the same temperature and pressure for the same number or kind of components, providing only that the convergence pressures of the two systems are exactly the same at the same temperature and that the components are of the same homologous series".2 This law, as with all laws of physics, cannot be proven theoretically. It can only be justified by experimental data supporting its premises. Arguments have been made that this law violates Gibb's phase rule. For example, consider a four-component system. By Gibb's phase rule, which is thermodynamically rigorous, f = c — P + 2 =4, for a four-component, two-phase system. Thus, four independent intensive variables must be specified to establish completely all the intensive variables of the equilibrium phases. On the other hand, according to convergence pressure theory, only three variables need be specified for any mixture containing four different components. These variables are temperature, pressure and convergence pressure. Thus, the two laws appear to be in conflict. However, the convergence pressure postulate is more restrictive than Gibb's phase rule. It applies only to mixtures of the same homologous series. Hence, these two concepts are not in disagreement. Although gold is one of the rarer metals, it is widely distributed; it is found on all of the continents and in each of the grand metallogenic provinces of the earth. It is prominent particularly in the shield areas of the earth; these areas have produced a large part of the world's lode gold and in most of them gold lodes are more important than the lodes of other metals. The Scandinavian shield is the only one that has not produced much gold. Nearly all of the world's gold has been derived from lodes and from sands and gravels where gold placers formed by the destruction of lodes. The gold derived from magmatic segregations, from pegmatites and from contact metamorphic deposits is quite subordinate to that derived from auriferous lodes. The lodes include all veins and related deposits that are formed by hot waters that move along fissures or other openings and that deposit vein 'matter :in the fissures and by replacement of the country rocks along the fissures. All of the shield areas of the earth are characterized by large areas of granitic rocks including granitic gneisses, granodiorites and other acid intrusives which here are included in the general term "granite." The granites are intruded into schists, ancient lavas and other rocks which here are designated as the "invaded" rocks. The granites are parts of what once were great batholiths: that is, they are the remaining portions of great deep-seated bodies that slope outward, have very irregular roofs and so far as known have no floors but extend downward to great though unknown depths. Some of them are scores or hundreds of miles across and contain islands or "roof pendants" of the invaded rocks at places where the roofs of the batholiths were low—that is, where erosion has not yet completely unroofed the batholiths. It is in these islands of older rocks and in the narrow marginal belts and cupolas of the batholiths that practically all of the gold lode deposits of the shields are found. Valuable lodes are lacking generally in the granites themselves except in grahite within a mile or less from .the contacts with rocks of the islands (Fig. 1). It is probable that the great areas of granites and gneisses that surround the islands are not all of the same age, and that at places unmapped granite intrudes gneiss or older

The mathematical problem considered by the author1 can be given another physical interpretation which is of some practical significance. The alternative physical problem involves the approximate behavior of a single well which is producing at a constant rate through an axially symmetric, horizontal fracture of infinite flow capacity which is located at the center, top or bottom of a uniformly thick, horizontal, homogeneous, anisotropic reservoir of infinite lateral extent which contains a single, slightly compressible fluid. Using Coats' asymptotic results, the wellbore pressure in the fractured system is given by the following equation.

I. A. Sirel—I would like to ask Mr. Sims what would the preferred hot metal analysis be as far as manganese and silicon are concerned if you used specially made iron for this process instead of basic iron. C. E. Sims (authors' reply)—A preferred composition would contain somewhat less silicon than the basic pig iron used in these experiments. High silicon requires a large lime addition. Lime must be added in sufficient quantity to neutralize the silica formed and to leave an excess for dephosphorization. Manganese presents almost no problem in operation. It is almost completely oxidized and, in burning, develops considerable heat. The evidence indicates, however, that, in continuous commercial operation, there will be an excess of heat produced, and the bath will need to be cooled in some manner as by the addition of scrap or by utilizing the energy for the direct reduction of ore. There do not seem to be any serious limitations on composition of pig iron. One heat was made with an iron containing 2.27 pct silicon and the phosphorus finished at 0.007 pct. In another, the iron contained 0.45 pct phosphorus which was lowered to 0.019 pct. This indicates considerable leeway in composition. D. R. Loughrey—We are all very much interested in the recent discovery of very large deposits of iron ore both in Labrador and in Venezuela. I would like to ask Mr. Sims if the iron ore at either or both of these places is such that it would lend itself to the manufacture of iron suitable for use in the turbohearth. C. E. Sims-—According to my information, those ores are not essentially different from ores now used in this country for making basic pig. They should, therefore, be adaptable to this process. D. I. Brown—You have spoken about the leeway, or spread in analysis of the various irons you can use in the vessel. I would like to have you tell us, if you can, about the different kinds of steels which can be made in such a vessel. The turbohearth process, or it might more aptly be called pneumatic openhearth, is a little different from that used in most Bessemer shops and in the one in which I worked. The spacing of wells in Long Beach oil field has caused much discussion from the earliest days of its development, on account of the closely drilled town-lot areas which have been as intensively developed as any productive areas in the world. The purpose of this paper is to present the results obtained from this type of development in comparison with the more widely spaced development in this field, now that a sufficient length of productive life has elapsed. The intensity of development in Long Beach is indicated by the fact that up to Sept. 1, 1929, there were 1736 wells either drilled or drilling. Of these 165 failed to get production and 121 were drilling. Thus 1450 wells have produced oil from an area of 1350 acres. Up to July 1, 1929, these wells produced a total of 35.5,047,913 barrels. Method Pursued Four groups of offset areas were chosen, in each group the wells in one area are widely spaced and in the other, closely spaced. The areas in each group are contiguous and the groups are spread over the field from the southeast end to the northwest, so that representative data are assured. The comparison has also been extended to shallow and deep zones, like zones in their respective areas being compared. Even though these productive zones are very thick, a fair picture of results is obtained, because the drilling of the wells in the two types of areas was concurrent in the different groups and, as a rule, the thickness of sand opened up at any one time was about the same. As deeper sands were found, wells in offset areas were deepened or new ones were drilled in both types of areas. The division of zones was made in the same manner in contiguous areas. The total cumulative production up to July 1, 1929, of the wells in their respective zones in each area was obtained. From these figures were computed the recovery per well, recovery per acre, acreage per well, and the ratios of these factors. Thus July 1, 1929, is the end of the period considered in all areas.

Declining Productivity Index, as considered herein, is a productivity index that has a substantially and consistently decreasing value when measured over a period of a few hours. If not recognized, it may be interpreted as representing an unsettled or unstable condition in a producing well. It forms the basis of a number of predictions as to future performance compared with the performance of wells in which the productivity index does not decline. The nost important of these are that: (I) the rate of oil production will decline more rapidly, (2) the gas-oil ratio will usually increase abnormally, (3) the amount of water ultimately produced will be negligible, if any, (4) stop-cocking will increase current production and decrease gas-oil ratio. When such relative well performance is indicated, it follows that certain reservoir performance and operating practices may be anticipated: (I) disappointing recovery, (2) longer natural flow, (3) no active water drive, (4) better evaluation of acidizing, shooting and reworking, (5) intermittent operation of wells, (6) smaller pumping equipment required. It is significant that the basis of these important predictions is bottom-hole pressure tests that can be made immediately after completion of the wells. Introduction "'Productivity index" is the number of barrels of oil produced per day per pound per square inch of differential pressure between the reservoir and the bottom of the well. "Declining Productivity Index," as considered herein, is a productivity index that has a substantially and consistently decreasing value when measured over a period of a few hours. Productivity index can be determined only when the rate of production can be stabilized. In most wells the rate of production and bottom-hole pressure are easily stabilized to give a constant productivity index for a period of many hours. A few produce so erratically as to preclude probability of an acceptable test in the usual sense. A satisfactory productivity index can be determined in some wells only by gauging the production accurately by hours, measuring the bottom-hole pressure continuously, and from these data calculating the productivity index for successive hours. Such figures frequently will have a decreasing value—that is, a declining productivity index—and when plotted on double. logarithmic cross-section paper with productivity index as ordinate and time as abscissa will be a straight-line curve. The angle between the curve and the abscissa is referred to as the rate of decline. Declining productivity index may appear to be the result of change in permeability to oil due to decreasing saturation of oil and increasing saturation of gas in the reservoir. It is possible that such is in fact the cause, but if so, more is involved than merely relative saturation of oil and gas. This seems evident because the rate of decline in productivity index is substantially the same regardless of the pro-

During the past two years California has developed a new and important oil-field: I refer to Midway. This field produced the famous Lake View gusher, which is credited with a total production in excess of 8,000,000 barrels. Fortunately for the oil industry of the State, this well is now a thing of the past, and nothing, save a great crater-like opening marks its location. The pipe is entirely worn away and gone; and it is a matter of serious doubt if there can be anything done that will cause the well to produce again. Fortunately, also, there have been no other wells in that field or elsewhere throughout the State that in any may compared with the Lake View. Midway is noted for large wells, of from 500 to 2,000 barrels production; but the decline is rapid, and a few months serve to bring the output down to a few hundred barrels. In the oil-territory heretofore blocked out as proved and probable, there have been, during the year, many changes. Some areas which were expected to be fairly productive have apparently failed; others, more strictly "wild-cat," have come in; while in some of the older fields there are properties which are beginning to shorn evident signs of exhaustion. THE creep and stress rupture properties of three grades of aluminum have been reported in a previous paper.' It was found that the stress coefficient of the creep rate and of the rupture time changes at the transition from low temperature-type to high temperature-type deformation. The transition corresponds to the equicohesion for grains and grain boundaries. In order to support the conclusions obtained from the examination of creep and stress rupture data, the deformed specimens were observed metallographically and a few special tests were conducted. The results of these qualitative observations are given in the present paper. Experimental Procedure and Results Table I gives the types of aluminum specimens.' The creep and stress rupture tests were conducted in simple tension at constant stress. Further details on the experimental techniques have been given.' The test bars were electropolished in a perchloric-acetic mixture before testing and were observed after testing without any further preparation unless otherwise specified. Observations of specimen cross-sections were made after electrolytic polishing and etching. The samples were extended along a direction parallel to the longer side of the micrographs of Figs. 12 through 27. The log-log plots of stress vs. minimum creep rate for the three grades of aluminum appear in Figs. 1 and 2. The reference numbers on each curve help relate the photographs to the conditions of testing, indicating where high temperature-type deformation and failure prevailed and where low temperature behavior prevailed. Deformation of Single Crystals at Very High Temperature: An annealed, high purity aluminum specimen was slightly strained at one end and re-annealed. A large single crystal was formed at the strained end of the specimen during re-annealing; the other end remained polycrystalline (see Fig. 3). A stress of 50 psi was applied to the cold specimen to avoid loading at 1100°F. The temperature was then raised to 1100°F, kept at 1100°F for 3 hr, and lowered again to room temperature. Fig. 4 shows the appearance of the specimen after testing. The single crystal deformed by gliding along parallel planes, while the polycrystalline part deformed mainly by grain boundary flow. Some grain growth occurred in the polycrystalline part. Another high purity specimen, which had two large single crystals at the two ends and a polycrystalline zone in the middle portion, was tested at 1000 °F under a stress of 100 psi. The appearance of the sample after test is shown in Fig. 5. Even though considerable slip occurred in the single crystals, the fracture occurred in the weaker polycrystalline portion. Evidence of Grain Boundary Migration during Creep Testing: A high purity, coarse grained specimen, which had a large crystal in the middle portion (see Fig. 6) was tested at 700°F under a constant stress of 175 psi for 30 hr. The appearance of the specimen after testing (Fig. 7) indicates that the large crystal deformed by gliding along parallel planes, while the rest of the specimen deformed mainly by grain boundary flow. Total United States production for 1928 was 900,364,000 bbl. as compared with 901,129,000 for 1927, or 2,466,000 bbl. per day versus 2,468,000. The three major producing areas were Texas, Oklahoma and California. Texas production increased from 217,389,000 bbl. in 1927 to 256,888,000 in 1928—an increase of 39,499,000 bbl. following an increase of 44,500,000 bbl. in 1927. Oklahoma production amounted to 249,558,000 bbl. in 1928 as compared with 277,775,000 bbl. in 1927 and 177,650,000 bbl. in 1926. California production for 1928 was 231,982,000 bbl. as compared with 231,196,000 in 1927. Production increased markedly in Venezuela and declined in Mexico. Elsewhere no great changes or declines in production were noted. New discoveries occurred in nearly all districts. The many excellent reviews of the various districts of the United States presented at this meeting, are each fully summarized and tell their own story so well that little would be gained by attempting to repeat their content here. There are certain impressions to be gathered from these papers and certain trends that are indicated by them which may better be pointed out. OVERPRODUCTION Overproduction is the most serious one of them. Efforts to avert it resulted in a measure of cooperation in the oil industry more widespread in character and more beneficial in results than has ever been recorded in any previous year. These efforts were undertaken in the closing months of 1927 and enthusiastically effected before the spring of 1928 had passed. Unfortunately, slight advances in prices during the summer months accompanied by the letting down of this sort, of effort resulted in a marked increase of production during the latter half of 1928. The saying that a "prophet" is without honor in his own country does not always hold true, as is shown by the following from one of the local papers, which appeared under the above heading: "Edwin Ludlow, for more than seven-years vice-president of the Le-high Coal.& Navigation Co., with headquarters in Lansford, has resigned, to take effect July 1, when he will take up his residence in New York and engage as a consulting engineer. Mr. Ludlow, during the incumbency of his present position, has demonstrated his efficiency as an engineer and general manager in many directions, notable among which are the almost perfect methods in practice in the inside workings of the several operations under his charge and the erection of the most complete, most practical and most commodious breakers for the preparation of the mine product for market. In addition, his relations with organized labor have been cordial and his dealings with its representatives have been invariably based upon the principle of fair play."

In the United States nearly 200,000 tons of copper per year are being produced, by leaching waste rock and oxidized copper ore with dilute sulfuric acid-ferric sulfate solutions and precipitating the copper on scrap iron. The flow of solutions is in excess of 80 million gpd. A survey conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in late 1965 at 14 mines in Arizona, Utah and Nevada, showed that with a few exceptions, the solutions contain from two to a maximum of 15 ppm U3O8, and there is strong evidence that these represent equilibrium concentration and not merely an accumulated in-process inventory resulting from recycling the solutions for many years. Consequently, it is believed that uranium could be recovered at a constant rate as long as mining and leaching operations continue. Preliminary surveys and estimates by the USBM indicate a production potential of possibly 1000 tons of U3O8 per year at a cost of less than $8 per lb if the major process streams from most of the large copper mines in the western United States were to be treated. Laboratory research by the USBM showed that the uranium could be efficiently recovered as a specification-grade uranium concentrate by a combination of ion exchange resin and solvent extraction of liquid ion exchange techniques. A joint pilot plant investigation by Kennecott Copper Corp. and the USBM was conducted on solutions from the Bingham Canyon mine to evaluate a new system of countercurrent ion exchange developed during the laboratory studies. In subsequent small-scale continuous tests, recovery of uranium from the pregnant eluate by solvent extraction and chemical precipitation techniques was investigated.

AXnealing twins are common in the microstructure of copper that has been rolled and recrystallized. In such samples it follows that a twin relationship should exist between components of the re-crystallization texture,' and several examples of this have been reported. For example, twin relationships have been found in recrystallized electrolytic copper sheet, as indicated in Fig. I, from a paper by Coheur and Lejeune.2 In this pole figure the cube texture (100) [001] is indicated by the hollow squares in the lower half of the figure (the pole figure for 200 reflections) and in the upper, (III), part of the figure. The texture contains, in addition to this orientation, the first-order twins of it, shown in the figure by the filled triangles. This orientation relation has been suggested by others also, under certain annealing conditions,3'4 although pole figures have not been published to confirm it. Some orientations in recrystallized sheets are identical with their twins, because of the symmetry elements of the texture— this is true, for example, with the (113) [ZII] texture so commonly reported for brass—hence it appears impossible in such samples to decide whether the twin relationships result from twinning or merely from the symmetry of the deformation process. The present investigation of a commercial copper strip seems to yield an example in which annealing twins account unambiguously for the principal orientations present. It proves to be a case, also, for which the recrystallization texture cannot be viewed as derived from the deformation texture by a first or second-order twinning mechanism. Materials and Methods The samples investigated were of secondary copper (melted in belgium) to which 0.19 per cent iron had been added to raise the recrystallization temperature. How much the orientation characteristics of this metal can be ascribed to the iron content and how much to other impurities or to melting and pouring practice have not been investigated.* The rolling was done in one direction only, on a mill with rolls of about 20-cm diameter. A strip I. cm wide was reduced from 5 mm thickness to 0.05 mm by several cold passes at commercial speeds. The samples cut from this 99 per cent reduced strip were X-rayed throughout their entire thickness. A pole figure made soon after rolling and annealing was identical, within experimental error, with one that was made when a two-year interval occurred between rolling and annealing. THE perfluoro acids and derivatives show unusual surface-active properties that qualify them as possible flotation reagents. They lower the surface tension of water from 15 to 20 dynes below that obtainable with the corresponding hydrocarbon compounds.1, 2 Fluorochemicals adsorb very strongly on solid surfaces to give films that exhibit larger contact angles than films of the corresponding hydrocarbons."' * The large contact angles probably result from the terminal —CF3 group. The perfluoro acids are made by electrolysis of the corresponding carboxylic acid in anhydrous hydrogen fluoride.5 From the perfluoro acids many derivatives may be obtained, such as amides, amines, alcohols, xanthates, ethers and esters and others. Since the fluorinated analogues of the conventional hydrocarbon flotation collectors possess enhanced surface properties, a few were selected for testing. Because a survey of all possible minerals and reagent combinations would be out of the question, hematite was chosen to represent a nonsulphide system and pyrite to represent a sulphide system. The fluorinated reagents used in these experiments were prepared in the research laboratories of Minnesota Mining & Mfg. Co. Some were synthesized especially for this research. They are not available cokmercially. Separation of Nonsulphide Ores: The separation of oxides from silica has always been a challenge to the flotation industry because differences in surface properties of the minerals are normally insufficient to produce clean concentrates. Oleic acid," rosin acids,' and amine salts% ave been used to considerable extent to effect separation of metal oxides and silica. The system hematite-silica was chosen to represent the nonsulphides both because of its difficulty of separation and because large tonnages of easily obtainable material are available, such as gravity concentration tailings and nonmagnetic taconites on the Mesabi Range. The wash-ore tailings used here contained approximately 35 pct iron after desliming. Samples of the material used in this work were part of the same lot used by Chang, Cooke, and Huch9 and were prepared in an identical manner. Reagents for Nonsulphide Ores: Since one of the purposes of this investigation was to compare hydrocarbons with fluorocarbons, reagents of known behavior such as oleic acid, and the alkali metal salts of certain resin acids (Dresinates), were established as standards. Hydrocarbons and fluorocarbons of comparable chain length and other experimental fluorocarbons were tried as collectors for hematite. A list of the materials used and the concentrations of their stock solutions are given in Table I. Since silica can be selectively floated from hematite by conventional reagents," a few fluorocarbon reagents were also tried for this purpose. Their composition and concentrations are given in Table 11. Most of these reagents served the dual function of collector and frother. In the case of F-11 flotation did not occur but it served as a frother when F-6 was employed as a collector. Reagent grade sulphuric acid and sodium hydroxide were used to regulate the pH. Deionized water containing less than 0.1 ppm of salts expressed as NaCl was used for all solutions and flotation tests. The pneumatic flotation cell consisted of a 350-ml fritted glass Buechner funnel with a source of filtered air which could be controlled by a needle valve." A 50-g sample of ore and 250 ml of deionized water were added to the flotation cell and stirred slowly. The reagents were added and the pulp was conditioned before air was admitted to the cell. Approximately 15 ml of the pulp were removed for pH determination before flotation was started and were then returned to the system. The pH was again measured after flotation. Air was admitted to the cell until no further flotation occurred or until the character of the float changed markedly. Both the float and the nonfloat products were filtered, dried, weighed. and assayed for iron. The cell was washed in hot water and rinsed with deionized water after each test. Occasionally the cell was cleaned with concentrated hydrochloric acid to remove iron oxide particles from the glass frit. TO increase tonnage in the early days of coal mining it was necessary only to hire more men. The job now is to increase the tons per man, but other troubles arise because this has been accomplished. With the introduction of continuous miners, newer and faster loading machines, and faster belt conveyors the safety engineer has been faced with new difficulties. Use of larger equipment created roof control problems, which were thoroughly studied by the safety engineers of various companies. With the assistance of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, safety engineers in Alabama conducted roof bolting experiments wherever they appeared to be applicable. Accident records before and after the method was adopted showed results more than justifying the efforts and funds expended. The larger mining companies responded enthusiastically to the program because roof bolting not only prevented accidents but also increased production efficiency, in many cases rep- resenting the margin between profit and loss. In Alabama today there are miles of roof supported by bolts.
