Manganese being perhaps the least expensive of the metallic alloying elements that can be advantageously added to iron in considerable quantities, the basic characteristics of its alloys with iron are properly receiving much attention at present. In the course of a dilatometric investigation of this system several years ago, the writer observed certain transformation phenomena not found in other iron-base alloys. The interpretation of those effects was not evident from the information then available, but recent X-ray studies clear up at least one anomaly and permit a more satisfactory description of the results than would have been possible otherwise. Aside from the new phenomena observed, the effect of manganese on the Arg transformation is of timely interest because of its bearing on the critical compositions of austenitic alloys, the applications of which are now being greatly extended. It is known that the properties of these alloys are unstable unless the As transformation occurs at a tem-pcrature considerably below atmospheric and that manganese is very effective in depressing the temperature of this transformation. The writer aims to establish a simple general relation which expresses the location of Ar3, quantitatively in terms of the content of the common alloying elements used in steel. A step in that direction is taken here. Early dilatometric investigations1 indicated that only one transformation other than the eutectoid A1 occurs in the high-iron alloys of the iron-manganese system. Dejean represents the Arg point as falling to 0" C. with a manganese content of 11 per cent and carbon content of between 0.30 and 0.40 per cent. Esser and Oberhoffer," sing alloys low in carbon (under 0.03 per cent), arrived by extrapolation at 14 per cent for the manganese content at which As is depressed to 0" C. The first pump of this character, made by H. R. Worthington, and, so far as the writer is informed, the first and only one of this kind ever constructed, is now in daily use in the above-named works. The water-pressure necessary for the working of the hydraulic machinery of this plant had been supplied, up to the time of the building of this pump, by two Worthington Duplex High Pressure Pumps, having steam-cylinders of 20 inches diameter and 12-inch stroke, with water-plungers of 71/2 inches diameter; eight inlet and eight outlet valves of 24 inches diameter, and pumping into a 6-inch pipe. These pumps required a large amount of steam, and, in consequence of the various additions to their duty, their capacity became far short of the work required. In preference to putting in another engine of the same class, it was decided to accept Mr. Worthington's proposition to build the compound one under description, he guaranteeing that it should be equal to the demands of the works, and at the same time cause a saving of from 5 to 6 tons of coal per day from the amount required to run the two old pumps. The new engine has been in operation about one month, and so far has exceeded the most sanguine expectations. It consists of two high-pressure cylinders of 21 inches and two low-pressure ones of 363/8 inches diameter, by 36-inch stroke, with water-plungers of 961/2 inches diameter. There are two air-pumps of 20 inches diameter by 18-inch stroke; the condenser being 24 inches diameter by 60 inches high. Both cylinders are jacketed with wood and felt, and the low-pressure cylinder also with live steam. The high and low pressure steamcylinders are in line and immediately adjoining each other, while the inconveniences attending an internal stuffing-box are avoided by having two piston-rods for each of the low-pressure cylinders, running through stuffing-boxes on the outside of the smaller high-pressure ones. The wellbore acts as a storage tank during drawdown and build-up testing and causes the sand-face flow rate to approach the constant surface flow rate as a function of time. This effect is compounded if non-Darcy flow (turbulent flow) exists near a gas wellbore. Non-Darcy flow can be interpreted as a flow-rate dependent skin effect. A method for determining the non-Darcy flow constant using this concept and the usual skin effect equation is described. Field tests of this method have identified several cases where non-Darcy flow was severe enough that gas wells in a fractured region appeared to be moderately damaged. The combination of wellbore storage and non-Darcy flow can result in erroneous estimates of formation flow capacity for short-time gas well tests. Fortunately, the presence of the wellbore storage eflect permits a new analysis which can provide a reasonable estimate of formation flow capacity and the non-Darcy flow constant from a single short-time test. The basis of the Gladfelter, Tracy and Wilsey correction for wellbore storage in pressure build-up was investigated. Results led to extension of the method to drawdown testing. If non-Darcy flow is not important, the method can be used to correct short-time gas well drawdown or build-up data. A method for estimation of the duration of wellbore storage effects was developed. INTRODUCTION In 1953, van Everdingen and Hurst generalized results published in their previous paper3 concerning wellbore storage effects to include a "skin effect", or a region of altered permeability adjacent to the wellbore. Later, Gladfelter. Tracy and Wilsey4 presented a method for correcting observed oilwell pressure build-up data for wellbore storage in the presence of a skin effect. The method depended upon measuring the change in the fluid storage in the wellbore by measuring the rise in liquid level. To the author's knowledge, application of the Gladfelter, Tracy and Wilsey storage correction to gas-well build-up has not been discussed in the literature. It is, however, a rather obvious application. Gas storage in the wellbore is a conlpressibility effect and can be estimated easily from the measured wellbore pressure as a function of time. Several approaches to the wellbore storage problem have been suggested. As summarized by Matthews, it is possible to minimize annulus storage volume by using a packer, and to obtain a near sand-face shut-in by use of down-hole tubing plug devices. Matthews and Perrine have suggested criteiia for determining the time when storage effects become negligible. In 1962, Swift and Kiel' presented a method for determination of the effect of non-Darcy flow (often called turbulent flow) upon gas-well behavior. This paper provided a theoretical basis for peculiar gas-well behavior described previously by Smith. Recently, Carter, Miller and Riley observed disagreement among flow capacity k,,h data determined from gas-well drawdown tests conducted at different flow rates for short periods of time (less than six hours flowing time). In the original preprint of their paper, Carter et al. proposed that the discrepancy in flow capacity was possibly a result of wellbore storage effects. Results of an analytical study of unloading of the wellbore and non-Darcy flow were recorded by carter.14 In the final text of their paper, Carter et al.!' stated that they no longer believed wellbore storage was the reason for discrepancy in their kgh estimates. In view of the preceding, this study was performed to establish the importance of non-Darcy flow and well-bore storage for gas-well testing. In the course of the study. a reinspection of the previous work by van Everdingen' and Hurst' was made, and the basis for the Gladfelter, Tracy and Wilsey' wellbore storage correction was investigated and extended to flow testing. WELLBORE STORAGE THEORY As has been shown by Aronofsky and Jenkins,11-12 Matthews," and others, flow of gas can often be approximated by an equivalent liquid flow system. The following developnlent will use liquid flow nomenclature to simplify the presentation. Application to gas-well cases will be illustrated later. First, we will use the van Everdingen-HursP treatment of wellbore storage in transient flow to establish (1) the duration of wellbore storage effects, and (2) a method to correct flow data for wellbore storage. DURATION OF WELLHORE STORAGE EFFECTS When an oil well is opened to flow. the bottom-hole pressure drops and causes a resulting drop in the liquid level in the annulus. As already announced, the Arizona Meeting of the Institute is to be held from the 18th to the "25th of September. There will be a special train from New York City to Arizona and return, to take members and guests of the Institute to the meeting., The Committee in charge consists of Walter Douglas, Chairman, Cleveland E. Dodge, John C. Greenway, Arthur S. Dwight and Julius Kruttschnitt, Jr., and while the plans of this Committee are not complete, it may he announced that 'the train will be run with the requisite number of Pullman, dining and baggage cars to accommodate those who desire to go, which will accompany the party during the entire week of the Arizona Meeting as per the following program, including, of course, the visit to the Grand Canyon. It is especially desirable that the Committee should know, at as early a date as possible, the number of those who desire to make the trip; and those who desire special accommodations such as drawing rooms, state rooms, etc., are especially requested to communicate as soon as possible with the Secretary of the Institute, stating the number in their party.

The Batac jig was first introduced in the US for fine coal cleaning in 1973 (Tackett, 1977; Hake, 1976). Since then, a total of six such jigs of various sizes have been installed in five US plants for a total capacity of 2346 t/h. The raw coal size ranges from 19 mm x 0 to 9.5 mm x 0-fraction sizes previously fed to heavy medium cyclones, Deister tables, or water only cyclones. Growing interest in the Batac jig as a replacement for the above equipment is due to the following reasons: • Unlike heavy medium cyclones, no magnetite is required. As a result, the operating cost of the plant is reduced. • The compactness of equipment is unique on a unit ton per hour basis as compared to other equipment. • Solid state electronic control of jig stroke length, frequency, and jig bed depth makes the equipment highly efficient. Installations of Batac jigs in the US as of June 1980 are shown in [Table 1]. Use of the Batac jig is even greater outside the US (Anonymous, 1980; Chen, 1980). Its use is not limited to fine coal but is applied to coarse coal as well, with 102 mm size in the feed (Zimmerman, 1975). In countries where consumption of magnetite associated with the heavy medium system of coal cleaning is considered a waste of iron ore resource, the Batac jig is regarded as the primary choice in the selection of cleaning equipment (Chen, 1980).

The present program of increased production of armament and lend-lease material for mechanized war has created a problem for the shops that must do the machining. They have naturally turned to the steel producers to provide them with a steel that can be accurately machined with the greatest possible speed. The adding of sulphur to steel as an aid to machinability has long been practiced; however, it may cause red shortness in rolling and may result in billets with seams and cracks, which must be removed before rolling can be continued. This conditioning of billets slows down production and adds to the cost of making steel. Experience with various grades of sulphur steel made to different specifications has shown that Bessemer sulphur steels roll better than similar grades made in the open hearth, and also that low-carbon steels that are open or semikilled as tapped roll better than completely deoxidized or killed steels. This has led to the belief that oxygen plays an important part in the rolling qualities of sulphur-bearing steels. It is generally held that the red shortness of sulphur steels is due to the low melting point of the sulphide compounds that separate out at the grain boundaries when the steel solidifies. At the rolling temperature of steel these sulphide compounds melt and cause cracking. Adding Sulphur as a Sulphite These difficulties can be avoided if sulphur is introduced into the stecl by means of an anhydrous sulphite, such as sodium sulphite or sodium bisulphite, which—upon decomposition—forms sulphur dioxide. It is assumed that, in this case, the oxygen of the sulphur dioxide forms part of the sulphide inclusions in the steel, and raises their solidification temperature enough so that the formation in the steel of a low-melting eutectic is prevented. The result is the prevention of hot shortness and a more uniform distribution of inclusions. Fig. I shows photomicrographs of steels made with sulphur, while Fig. 2 illustrates the structure of steels made with sodium bisulphite. These samples were cut from the steels as cast—that is, before rolling— and were polished and lightly etched to bring out the grain boundaries. Fig. I shows that sulphide inclusions segregate more or less at the grain boundaries, and it can be seen how the continuity of these low-melting inclusions would cause red shortness. Fig. 2 shows that the sulphide inclusions arc more or less uniformly distributed throughout the matrix. This arrangement of inclusions has no apparent effect on the rolling qualities of a steel. This statement has been substantiated by the observation of the rolling of over 6000 tons of steel made with a sulphite addition. Coal is produced, in commercial quantities, in thirty-five of the fifty-five counties of West Virginia. Oil and gas are produced, commercially, in forty-two counties. So, you may readily see that coal, oil and gas arc closely related as to production areas. Many of the West Virginia coal mines are studded with oil and gas wells, as drilling has been done in thirty-two of the coal bearing counties. When the drilling of oil and gas wells was placed under the regulatory control of the Department of Mines on June I, 1929, it was estimated, by the State Geological Survey, that 64,000 wells had been drilled in West Virginia and that 34,000 wells were then being operated as oil and gas producers. No records of many of these remaining 30,000 abandoned wells exist and some of them remain a standing menace to safety as our coal extraction continues. Of a total of 13,100 new wells drilled since June 1929, approximately 5200 have been drilled through coal measures. Approximately 7000 wells, which were drilled through coal measures, have been abandoned in the same period of time. Many of these wells were drilled prior to the enactment of the oil and gas laws. Prior to the enactment of the Oil and Gas Law, which established the Oil and Gas Division of thc Department of Mines in 1929, there had been several mine ex-plosions attributable to cutting into un- charted wells and the improper plugging of other wells. The most serious explosion was that of Mines No. 47 and No. 49 of the Consolidation Coal Co. in Marion Co., when one of the so-called plugged wells leaked or seeped through some 80 ft of strata to the coal bed elevation, filling the mine with gas, the gas being ignited, killing a good many men and wrecking two coal mines. Legislation, to combat well hazards to coal mines, was slow in coming. In 1928, R. M. Lambie, then Chief of the Dept. of Mines, got sufficient support from coal, oil and gas interests to get the legislature to pass our present oil and gas laws. These statutes not only protected the coal industry but went a long way toward conserving the oil and gas resources of our state. Before drilling for oil or gas on any tract of land, known to be underlaid with one or more workable seams of coal, the well operator is required to submit a map of the area showing the location of the proposed well, and to send a copy to the Dept. of Mines and a copy to the coal operator. If no objections to the location of the proposed well are made by the coal operator within ten days, a drilling permit and a number for the well are then issued and work may proceed. If, however, the location of the proposed well is objected to by the coal operator, on the grounds that the location of the well will interfere with present mine operations, projected workings, or otherwise cause a dangerous condition, the operator may file a written objection with the Dept. of Mines.

The purpose of this report is to supply the Coal Classification Committee' with information for use in the formulation of a system of classification of coals according to their uses. Consideration is given here only to the nonferrous metallurgical operations that consume relatively large amounts of coal or coke; i. e., the smelting of copper, lead, zinc and aluminum. For all of these uses, coal of certain definite qualities is desired. Geographical location, however, often determines whether these qualities can be specified. In some instances the preferred qualities must be specified, regardless of cost. In others, quality may be sacrificed for lower cost, although the best quality consistent with cost is usually the determining factor. These considerations will be outlined in the following discussion under the various uses, which, however, will illustrate the impracticability of preparing definite specifications for coal used in the majority of the nonferrous industries. Coal and Coke in Copper Metallurgy From the standpoint of coal consumption, copper smelting and refining operations are the most important of the nonferrous metallurgical uses of coal. As nickel ores treated in the United States and Canada are associated with copper, the first step in their recovery is really a copper-smelting operation; accordingly, the following considerations under copper smelting apply equally to nickel. Copper Smelting in Reverberatory Furnaces.—For a long time, rever-beratory copper-smelting furnaces were fired with lump coal burned on grates in a fire box. Later, lump coal was displaced by pulverized coal or oil burned directly in the smelting chamber. Recently, natural gas has been used in several plants, although producer gas was used for this purpose at Great Falls as early as 1903.2 Requirements for coal used in

The two calcium sulfate minerals-gypsum and anhydrite-occur in many parts of the world, and gypsum has long been of economic importance in the family of industrial minerals. Gypsum, the dihydrate form of calcium sulfate (CaS042H20) and anhydrite, the anhydrous form (CaSO4) are frequently found in close association, and it is seldom that a calcium sulfate deposit will consist exclusively of one mineral or the other. Although known gypsum deposits are extensive, anhydrite makes up the largest part of total calcium sulfate reserves. However, it has very minor economic use, and most of the following discussion will be devoted to gypsum. Calcium sulfate is one of the principal con- stituents of evaporite deposits, and when pure, has the following composition: [ ] Deposits of pure gypsum or of pure anhydrite which are large enough to be considered commercial have never been found because of both the metastable relationship between the two minerals, and the presence of impurities such as calcium or magnesium carbonates, chlorides, other sulfate minerals, clay minerals, or silica. As a result most mine production of gypsum will range between 85 and 95% pure. Often it is used as mined, although in certain cases, one or more forms of mineral beneficiation are employed to upgrade the product.

The Pennsylvania-grade oil industry suffered a serious decline in 1938, which can be largely accounted for by the decrease in the use of lubricating oil. Production was considerably lower than in previous years and prices were very much lower. Operating profits undoubtedly were lower than the year 1933, for the average price of Bradford crude in 1938 was $1.898 as compared with $1.86 in 1933, and the difference in average price of $0.04 per barrel was more than offset by increased operating costs and taxes. Bradford Field Production in the Bradford field in the state of Pennsylvania averaged 36,759 bbl. per day in 1938 as compared with 41,300 bbl. in 1937. The decline in average daily production of 4541 bbl. can be attributed to low market price and pipe-line proration rather than to the actual physical capacity of the field. Pipe-line proration was in effect for the last eight months of the year and the daily average production per month fluctuated between a maximum of 41,852 bbl. per day in March 1938 and a minimum of 33,649 bbl. per day in November. Production figures for Bradford field have been corrected to include only the parts of the Bradford field that arc within the state of Pennsylvania, but the well-completion data for the Bradford field cannot be segregated and include those of the entire Bradford field, part of which is in Sew York state. Production from the Bradford field was obtained almost wholly by water-flooding and no radically new methods or practices occurred. The Pennsylvania-grade oil industry suffered a serious decline in 1938, which can be largely accounted for by the decrease in the use of lubricating oil. Production was considerably lower than in previous years and prices were very much lower. Operating profits undoubtedly were lower than the year 1933, for the average price of Bradford crude in 1938 was $1.898 as compared with $1.86 in 1933, and the difference in average price of $0.04 per barrel was more than offset by increased operating costs and taxes. Bradford Field Production in the Bradford field in the state of Pennsylvania averaged 36,759 bbl. per day in 1938 as compared with 41,300 bbl. in 1937. The decline in average daily production of 4541 bbl. can be attributed to low market price and pipe-line proration rather than to the actual physical capacity of the field. Pipe-line proration was in effect for the last eight months of the year and the daily average production per month fluctuated between a maximum of 41,852 bbl. per day in March 1938 and a minimum of 33,649 bbl. per day in November. Production figures for Bradford field have been corrected to include only the parts of the Bradford field that arc within the state of Pennsylvania, but the well-completion data for the Bradford field cannot be segregated and include those of the entire Bradford field, part of which is in Sew York state. Production from the Bradford field was obtained almost wholly by water-flooding and no radically new methods or practices occurred. The production history of an inverted nine-spot injection pattern was studied with a porous plate model similar to Habermann's. Colored fluids were used so the boundary movements could be photographed. By varying the production rates of the side and corner producing wells, the optimum pattern sweep efficiency can be obtained. Results of the laboratory tests indicate that interpolation of the pattern sweep and conductivity ratio data will permit application of the data to predicting fluid injection operations with mobility ratios between 0.1 and 10 and production rate ratios between I and the optimum values. INTRODUCTION The inverted nine-spot injection pattern in Fig. 1 has some unique advantages over other regular injection patterns (five spot, line drive, etc.) used in secondary recovery operations. It has three producing wells for each injection well, while the five-spot and line-drive patterns require an equal number of injectors and producers. Futher-more, of the eight producing wells surrounding each injection well, four are of the "side well" type which lie nearer the injection well than the remaining four "corner wells". This allows the production rates of these two types of wells to be adjusted independently of each other to obtain better pattern sweep efficiency. This latter advantage may well be the reason why the nine-spot patterns have not been studied as extensively as the patterns containing only one type of injection or producing well. The pattern sweep efficiency of the inverted nine spot is affected almost as much by operating with different producing rates of the comer and side wells as by differing mobility ratios. Possibly because of this added operating parameter, published studies of nine-spot systems have been limited in their coverage of the pertinent variables.'-' The model studies reported here covered the mobility-ratio range normally found in waterflood operations, as well as the variation in well production rates necessary to achieve optimum pattern sweep efficiency. Conductivity ratios — a measure of the change in total flow at constant pressure difference — were obtained during each model run. A porous-plate model with miscible fluids representing the in-place and injected fluids was used in this study. This model technique is the same as that used in both X-ray shadowgraph" and visual techniques4 described in the literature. Using miscible fluids eliminates residual oil in the model, and the permeability to the injected fluid is the same as to the in-place fluid. Thus the mobility ratio in the model is given by the ratio of the viscosity of the displaced fluid to the viscosity of the injected fluid. Because of the non-linear nature of the viscosity vs composition curve for two miscible liquids, the mobility change across the boundary between the two fluids is reasonably sharp. This technique thus represents the displacement of a region of one fluid mobility by a region of possibly different mobility in an isotropic system under steady-state flow conditions. The volume of air needed to move the combustion wave through each acre-foot of the reservoir is a very important quantity for engineering economic analyses. A new method, which involves backflowing the injection well, has been developed for determining the air requirement .for the forward combustion thermal pilot in the Delaware-Childers field. The method depends on measurement of the total volume of air injected and measurement of the pore volume in the zone swept out by the combustion front. The basic premise of the method is that the pore volume of the swept zone contains air, while the formation around this zone contains flue gas, oil and water. The pore volume of the swept zone is determined by blowing down the pilot section of the formation through the injection well after the pilot is shut down. Oxygen balance is used to differentiate between air from the swept zone and flue gas from the surrounding formation. Data indicate that air'is produced from the swept zone by relatively efficient miscible displacement by the flue gas. The pore volume occupied by the air in the swept zone is determined by simple PVT relationships. The average temperature of the swept zone is calculated by heat balance from the total amount of heat generated during the pilot and losses to the surrounding formation. The new method was applied successfully at the conclusion of the pilot in the Delaware-Childers field; the air required for the reservoir conditions involved was calculated to be 19.2 MMscf/acre-ft of reservoir swept. INTRODUCTION One of the most important pieces of information to be found from a forward combustion pilot is the air requirement; that is, the volume of air needed to move the combustion wave through each acre-foot of the reservoir. Compression costs per barrel of oil recovered, which are a direct function of the air requirement, are a large portion of the expenses incurred in the thermal recovery process. Thus, the profitability of thermal recovery depends largely on the air requirement, which is a measure of the amount of fuel deposited and burned in the thermal recovery process. Several attempts have been made to correlate crude oil properties with fuel deposition and, hence, air requirement.l*2 Other attempts have been made by our laboratory to find the air requirement by material balance, gravity survey, pressure transient analysis,3 magnetic survey and the poten-tiometric model. Better methods are needed to predict more accurately the economics of fieldwide application of the process. Another method of finding the air requirement consists of operating a pilot thermal project for several years. This is followed by an extensive coring program to define the volume swept by the combustion wave. The air requirement is found from the total injected air divided by the volume of the swept region found from the coring operation. This method is costly; an adequate coring program usually costs several hundred thousand dollars. A thermal pilot was operated in a watered-out portion of the Delaware-Childers field, Bartlesville sand, from Nov., 1960, until May 3, 1965. One of the primary purposes of this pilot operation was to determine the air requirement for economic calculations which determine the advisability of expanding the project to the entire 128,000 acre-ft field. Barnes4 has described the result of this pilot operation,, including calculation of the air requirement from limited coring data. The value obtained, as calculated, was 15.8 MMscf/acre-ft. One purpose of this report is to describe a new method of finding the air requirement from a thermal pilot operation. A second purpose is to describe the application of this method to the Delaware-Childers thermal pilot. IN a previous paper, one of the authors observed that the rate of cooling from the anneal prior to testing greatly influenced the life of copper under sustained load at 200°C. Furnace-cooled bars of oxygen-free copper (with, and without silver) had a life four to twenty-five times that of the water-quenched specimens. The addition of 0.054 per cent silver to the oxygen-free copper increased the life at a stress of 20,000 lb. per sq. in. from about 2 hr. to 50 hr. Fractures in these bars were intercrystalline. An explanation was advanced to account for the profound influence of cooling rate on the rupture properties at 200°C. The suggestion offered was that at the high annealing temperature the minor constituents are distributed at random. By water quenching, this condition is maintained at room temperature, whereas furnace cooling permits some segregation at the grain boundaries. The higher concentration of the minor constituents in the grain boundaries results in a strengthening, so that a longer life at a given stress and temperature results. Small amounts of cadmium or manganese have also been found to increase the life of copper at 200°C., and to a much greater extent than silver .2 The increase in the long-time strength of copper resulting from small additions of cadmium or silver appears to be related, indirectly at least, to the higher softening temperatures of such alloys. The elements, such as silver or cadmium, which greatly increase the rupture life of copper also cause large increases in the softening temperature. As little as 0.05 per cent of cadmium or silver is sufficient to raise the softening temperature more than 100°.3,4 The effects of cooling rate and of minor constituents on the rupture properties are of considerable fundamental as well as practical interest; therefore a more detailed study of their nature was conducted and is reported in this paper. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Materials The materials studied in this investigation may conveniently be classified in two groups: one consisting of a wide variety of commercial coppers, and the other composed of special high-purity, laboratory-prepared coppers. The commercial materials were tested to determine whether or not the effect of cooling rate occurred with all coppers, whereas the high-purity coppers were investigated in order to establish a basis for evaluating the effect of minor constituents on the rupture properties. In Table I are given the analyses of the coppers tested. The samples I to 6 are commercial materials and were obtained for the most part from stock supplies.*
