A brief history of byproduct coking in Alabama with short general descriptions of plants and the state's production of beehive and byproduct coke. PRIOR to the Civil War, there were several small charcoal furnaces for smelting the brown limonite ore that is found, in comparatively small bodies, throughout the central and north-central portions of the state. During the Civil War, these furnaces furnished charcoal iron to the Confederate Government. No attention was paid to the large bodies of lime-bearing hematite ore that now supplies the bulk of the ore used in the various blast-furnace plants of this district until the latter part of the 19th century. Red Mountain, which is the southernmost and one of the smaller ranges of the Appalachian Chain, lying immediately south of the Birmingham and Bessemer, is the principal source of this ore. The orebody outcrops on the northern face, extends through the mountain, and underlies Shades Valley on the southern side. When it was found that these ores could be worked satisfactorily in the blast furnaces, there was a comparatively rapid growth in the blast-furnace industry in the Birmingham district. As these ores are far more refractory than the limonite ores, this blast-furnace development was accompanied by the construction of beehive ovens to carbonize the coal, in order to supply the necessary fuel. The state's production of bee-hive coke in 1880 was 60,781 tons; ten years later this had increased to 1,072,942 tons; and, in 1897 the production had reached 1,443,017 tons. In 1898, the first byproduct oven built in the state was put in operation. This plant consisted of 120 horizontal-flue Semet-Solvay ovens, three flues in height by thirty flues in length with an average width of 16 in. The plant was constructed by Semet-Solvay Co., for the Tennessee Coal, Iron & Railroad Co., and was located adjacent to the blast-furnace plant of that company at Ensley. The mines of the Calumet & Arizona Mining Co. are situated in the Warren Mining District, Cochise County, Arizona, between Bisbee and Warren and adjoin those of the Copper Queen Consolidated Mining Co. and the Shattuck Arizona Copper Co. Paleozoic 1imestones.of considerable thickness have been intruded by granite porphyry. A great stock of the intrusive outcrops boldly near the city of Bisbee and is known as Sacramento Hill. From this central core the porphyry has tongued out into the limestone for many thousands of feet as dikes and sills of irregular shape and variable dimensions. Churn drilling has recently developed a large tonnage of secondarily enriched copper ore in the main porphyry mass of Sacramento Hill. While some ore has been found in porphyry in other parts of the district, it is relatively unimportant compared with that which occurs in the Paleozoic limestone as irregular lenses replacing favorable beds near porphyry contacts or associated with well-marked fracture zones often many hundreds of feet away from the intrusive. In a zone extending from Sacramento Hill for a distance of from 1,500 to 3,000 ft., the limestone has been extensively metamorphosed and in this contact metamorphic zone the ore occurs through a known vertical thickness of upward of 900 ft. and individual orebodies often show extension in a vertical direction of over 200 ft. At a greater distance from the intrusive stock, the ore occurs as lenses of greater horizontal than vertical dimensions with an average thickness of approximately 30 ft. An exception to this rule is found in the occasional steeply dipping mineralized fractures, almost true tabular veins, which are found long distances a way from the zone of contact metamorphism. The copper was probably introduced during or slightly later than the porphyry intrusion in the form of chalcopyrite and bornite. These primary copper minerals are always associated with pyrite and often occur as rich lenses in a huge mass or shell of pyrite carrying an insignificant percentage of copper. In many instances the copper-bearing solutions were preceded by siliceous solutions and these latter, often persisting during the period of mineralization, have thoroughly indurated the ore-

CONSIDERING the really short time that has elapsed since hydro-metallurgical processes of extracting copper from ores have been extensively developed, and the large scale on which this method is practised at Ajo, the successful operation of the plant must excite the admiration of every visitor. The application of the mechanical unloader to the purpose for which it is employed at Ajo is but an extension of the use for which it was originally designed, some 20 years ago, for unloading iron-ore vessels at the lower lake ports. At a time when the maximum output of a single machine, with men shoveling the ore into buckets, did not exceed 40 tons per hour, G. H. Hulett invented and constructed a mechanical unloader with a bucket of 10-ton capacity. This machine was of the steam hydraulic type, and it is still in operation after nearly 20 years of service. Several more machines of the same type were built, but the difficulties of power transmission, and the rapid development of electrical machinery, soon led to the adoption of electrically operated machines, and practically all of the later installations have been thus equipped. This electrically operated unloader has proved so well fitted for the work that the design of the lake boats has been practically revolutionized, with special view to the ease and rapidity of unloading. It is now possible to unload a 12,000-ton vessel with four machines in a little over 2 hr. This has necessitated an increase in the capacity of the machine, and the largest yet built handles an average load of 17 tons, with a possible maximum of 20 to 21 tons.

In a recent paper on the intermittent injection of gas in gas-lift operations as opposed to continuous injection, Morgan Walker presented a comparative table showing the effect on oil and gas production from the same wells under the two methods of operation.' This table carried a column showing the formational gas-oil ratios under each method, computed by deducting the volume of input gas from the volume of trap gas. During the entire spring and summer of 1928, the present writer had been engaged on some extensive test car tests of rich gas in Glenpool, seeking, primarily, for an explanation of the apparent loss of gasoline during the summer season between the field meters and the plant master meter. Tests at several of the field meters where the richest gas was obtained regularly failed to check with other tests on the same gas made farther along the line, and the difference was not made up by the quantity of drip gasoline collected between the points. In the course of these tests, the final outcome of which is immaterial to the present purpose, an attempt was made to construct a curve representing the relationship between gasoline content of the gas in gallons per thousand cubic feet and the shrinkage in the volume of gas treated as a result of removing the condensible fractions. Such a curve was made, expressed in units of gallons per thousand cubic feet on the abcissa and the ratio vapor volume to liquid volume on the ordinate. This curve is a rectangular hyperbola and shows that 3 gal. of gasoline taken from 1000 cu. ft. of raw gas as a vapor occupied much less space, per gallon, than did 1 gal. of gasoline taken from 1000 cu. ft. of another sample of gas. This is, in general, corroborated by converting to the same units the residue settlement curves prepared by the Tidal Oil Co. and by the Natural Gasoline Manufacturers Assn., though the three curves, when plotted together, occupy entirely different positions on the paper, as shown in Fig. 1. The bearing of all this on Mr. Walker's discussion of gas-lift is this: if the formational gas is to be computed by deducting the input gas from the trap gas, some correction must be made for the vapor volume

Book Review MEXICO UNDER CARRANZA. By Thomas E. Gibbon, Los Angeles, California. Doubleday Page and Co., New York, 1919, 270 pp., 711/2 X 5 in. $1.50. A vivid, accurate, convincing summing up of the Mexican problem as it confronts us today, devoid of sensationalism or bigotry. A compelling narrative of the relations of the Carranza Government and our own from Oct. 15, 1915, when it was recognized as the de facto government of Mexico, to the present time. It shows the absolute lack of promises kept or lived up to either with its own people or the United States. This is not done by invective or the indiscriminate use of adjectives but by quoting from the instruments on record on both sides of the case. The driving of the Red Cross out of Mexico, which condemned many of the native peons to starvation, and the interference with the Pershing Punitive Expedition are merely mentioned, but the crying crime against the Mexican people, who have sunk to unbelievable depths of misery obscured, but not exceeded, by the sufferings in Europe, is held up in a clarified light. Two illuminating chapters are devoted to the character and treatment of foreign investments in Mexico, Which are a complete refutation of the common statement that Mexico has been exploited remorselessly by the foreign investor. The conces-sions given by Diaz in the days of his regime most condemned are nowise as large nor the land grants as extensive nor the title so absolute as those granted to the railroad builders of our own transcontinental systems and other of our nationally subsidized works. This is not left to further argument but is settled by quoting the various official instruments and not at all in a tedious way. The author's concluding chapter is a picture of the Mexican people from Aztec times, when they had reached a civilization which gave them a better calendar than the Roman Empire ever had until modern times, to their present unhappy and pitiful condition. He concludes, basing his findings on parallel historical downfalls of a once proud people, that present conditions are the natural result of the absolute domination of an alien minority. He grants, of course, that there are many estimable Latin-Mexicans of integrity, ability and charm, but maintains that the dominant minority has continually degraded in fulfillment of the sociological law that the sure revenge of the servile class is found in the corruption of the master class. The book is replete with historical and literary allusions which, added to the pleasing style of the accomplished author, make fascinating the account of one of the world's great tragedies. Mr. Gibbon is a lawyer who has spent much time in Mexico and shows an understanding of the native people not shared by all writers on the Mexican problem. A distinct addition to all literature on the subject. P. E. B.

This symposium is designed to marshal a state-of-the-art account of approaches and solutions to problems arising out of waterlogging and salinization in the world's largest irrigation system which was dismembered by legal beheading of the Eastern Rivers under the lndus Waters Treaty of 1960. In this introduction, the geological and historical backgrounds of surface waters and groundwaters in the Indus Basin are presented with a summary of remedial measures undertaken and proposed to combat waterlogging and salinization. At a time when water-resource planning is proceeding on a continental scale, a study devoted solely to the Indus River Basin may seem to require an apologia. None is offered, however, for three major reasons: (1) Although the Indus is a single river basin, it is one of great magnitude and importance. The Indus River, which comes from Himalayan sources to form part of the great Indo-Gangetic Plain drainage system, is vital to agriculture and hydroelectric power in the thickly populated northern subcontinent of Indo-Pakistan. (2) The Indus has become a plexus of extraordinary problems since the dismemberment of the world's largest irrigation system of which it was a part. The break-up of this system occurred with the legal beheading of the Eastern Waters under the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960. (3) Th River Basin has been the target of a Herculean effort to contain the twin encroachments of waterlogging and salinization that now threaten it with a shortage of fresh water. The British irrigation system of barrages and canal on the Indus was a venture admirable in conception. Unfortunately, it is now a legacy burdened with unwanted consequences due to interference with the hydrological regimen, particularly the rise of water table occasioned by leakage. To cope with this situation, there has been a possibly unprecedented concentration of domestic and international engineering and scientific talent on the Indus and its problems (about a score of organizations by recent count). To marshal a state-of-the-art account of their approaches and solutions is the purpose of this Symposium. The coordinated effort now being made on a variety of fronts under the general supervision of West Pakistan Water and Power Authority (WAPDA) is directed toward the modification and control of interactions and relationships between geological materials — soils, water and its salt balance, and air —in what has been termed a huge "underground lake" in an alluvial basin. The problem is an intriguing one in that a highly complicated case history of river-course changes visible in the present surface must be projected downwards through Recent and Pleistocene sediments in order to decipher the environmental controls of deposition in terms of vertical and lateral variations in lithology and patterns. Such studies must be extended to compaction, deformation, and fabrics of the alluvium. Geohydrology is often defined as groundwater hydrology. As employed herein, it includes the distribution, quality, and behavior of surface and subsurface waters, including their evolution, vagaries, and geological, climatological, and botanical milieux." GEOGRAPHY The Indus (Sanskrit, Sindhu = river) rises at nearly 17,000 ft above the sea in the glaciers on the northern slopes of Kailas Parbat, Tibet. It is about 1800 miles long and has a total drainage area estimated at 372,000 sq miles. The average discharge is 196,000 cfs at mouth. Leaving the Plateau of Tibet, the river flows at a level which is miles above the sea, and in places miles below Himalayan peaks, in a structurally controlled northwestward course. THIS is the third paper in a series on the diffusion of zinc in alpha brass.1 At the time of the first-paper it was accepted that diffusion in a substitutional type of solid solution depended upon an equal interchange of solute and solvent atoms across the diffusion interface (or past a given lattice reference point). Discrepancies in the size of the areas under the diffusion curves on each side of the interface, if observed, were explained on some other basis than the fact that the solute atoms might cross the diffusion interface without an equal number of solvent atoms diffusing across the interface in the opposite direction. The second paper presented evidence indicating that zinc atoms in alpha brass diffuse across the interface more rapidly in one direction than the copper atoms diffuse across the interface in the opposite direction. This phenomenon forced the interface to move in the opposite direction of the diffusion of zinc atoms to provide space for the additional zinc atoms dissolved in the alpha brass. That the interface and columnar grain structure on one side would remain intact during this mass movement was not expected; however, it is gratifying that they did. While the evidence was sufficiently satisfying to the author, it was decided that additional experiments were in order to prove that zinc diffuses more rapidly than copper in alpha brass. It is the purpose of this paper to present the results of these experiments. PROCEDURE A bar of 70-30 wrought brass was selected, to avoid the relatively large volume change in going from beta to alpha brass as in the previous investigation. A bar 7 in. (18-cm.)* long and about ¾ in. (1.9 cm.) wide was surface ground and polished with abrasive paper on plate glass to 0.4184 ± .0002 in. (1.0625 ± 0.0005 cm.) thick. Six 0.005-in. (0.013-cm.) diameter molybdenum wires, chosen because of their very low solubility in copper and alpha brass, were stretched lengthwise along each of the two plane surfaces. Glass tubes placed at right angles to the wires every ½ in. held the wires tightly against the brass. The sample was then emersed in an acid copper sulphate plating bath and electroplated to a depth of about 0.020 in. (0.050 cm.) copper on all sides. Surveying and mapping are used to locate and visually portray objects, lines, or areas in relation to a reference point or line. The actual making of the measurements to locate the objects and points falls under surveying while mapping is concerned with putting the survey information into a graphical form. Generally, the type or class of proposed survey depends on the precision required. Some surveys may need only approximate measurements which can be obtained by simply pacing or by using an ordinary measuring tape; others may require much accuracy, thus calling for the use of an engineer's transit or theodolite along with a graduated steel tape for horizontal measurements, or a level and a graduated rod for measuring vertical distances. Mapping is likewise dependent on accuracy requirements. For example, a general layout showing the relative position of surface facilities may not call for a large scale of dimension or great precision whereas for detailed work, a large scale plus care in plotting points and drawing lines and curves are important factors. SURVEYING METHODS There are many kinds or types of surveying methods. Some examples include : land surveying for determining boundaries of land areas; route surveying for locating roads, highways, right-of-way, and haulways; city surveying for laying out lots, streets, and alleys; and mining surveying for projecting mine openings and locating mining operations. See Fig. 1. There are other types of surveying than those named, but in general, the type of method to be used will depend on the purpose for which the survey is to be made.

Most lead-zinc mines worldwide have moved to further mechanized techniques to boost productivity, improve safety, and lower costs. The mining session, chaired by S. C. Fall, NL. Industries, and C. J. Beattie, Callahan Mining Co., reviewed mining methods at five operations in the US, Australia, Peru, and Japan. Where massive sulfide-type and irregular ore bodies are encountered, resourceful operators have modified and varied the mining method with the localized ore zones. In all cases, mechanization of operations has registered gains in productivity.

A typical drilling mud from the Hastings oil field, Brazoria County, Texas, containing only 8 per cent (dry basis) of material of colloidal dimensions, which is largely illite, was concentrated to a density of 10.2 lb. per gal. and used in this study. The effects of water dilution, treatment with complex polyphos-phates, temperature and the time of heating upon the rheological properties of the mud were investigated. It was found that water plays an important part in chemical treatment and that sodium acid pyrophosphate and sodium tripolyphosphate were more efficient than other complex polyphosphates for chemical treatment. Muds treated with either of these chemicals manifested maximum reduction in viscosity and minimum filtration rates at low concentrations. Furthermore, .mud treated to minimum viscosity with either of these two chemicals was virtually unaffected by heat-treatment. Introduction The drilling of deep wells is dependent upon the use of drilling mud, and problems frequently arise concerning the effects on mud of temperature, prolonged heating and aging. The use of chemicals to control the rheological properties of mud is a well-established practice. Salts of weak organic acids such as sodium tannate or gallate were used at first until the complex phosphates of sodium were found to be more efficient. Consequently, it seemed important to investigate the reaction of a mud to chemical treatment with phosphates, temperature, heat-treatment and aging, particularly since previous work in the laboratory at the University of Texas had provided the particle-size distribution and mineral composition of Hastings mud. Properties or Mud Used in Experiments A large sample of the mud from a drilling well in the Hastings field, Brazoria County, Texas, was obtained directly from the circulatory system. Some of the general physical characteristics of the mud and other data are presented in Table I. This paper discusses elementary laws pertaining to seismic reflection methods and presents a general and simple criterion for determining the direction of dipping of a reflection horizon from observational data of distance and time. The important development of practical geophysics and the successful results obtained in America, Germany, and other countries, caused introduction of geophysical methods of prospecting in Poland. Of all methods, seismic prospecting has proved most successful in the area of the Carpathian foreland, where new oil reserves are to be expected. Because of the great depth of the sedimentary column in that area, ranging sometimes over 2000 meters, it was obvious that only the seismic reflection method could give reliable information regarding the structural features of these strata at such a depth. During the experimental surveys it appeared that the complicated geological conditions of that area do not always allow prediction of the depth and the angle of dipping of reflecting horizons, and for that reason information about the inclination of a given horizon has great importance in the determination of subsurface structure. Therefore the problem arises of obtaining from seismic reflection data reliable information as to the direction of dipping of reflecting strata, without any previous knowledge of the average velocity and depth of geologic horizons under consideration. Reflection Seismograms The earth, being a nonhomogeneous medium, is composed of a series of layers, which differ from each other in their physical properties, particularly in their elastic coefficients. These variations in elasticity are the cause of refraction and reflection of a seismic wave. AS I told you before in the treatise on ores, once these are found (whether they are ores of metals or semiminerals) it is necessary to assay them in order to know what is in them, since the judgment of the sight is not sufficient for recognizing the quantity or even what substance they contain. For this reason, it is necessary to come to assaying and, with the knowledge of experience, to weigh their virtues and to proceed with the work or withdraw from it and its expense; and also through knowledge to make provision for their defects if some evilness harms the ores. For if you should have need of a thing that would help them and should not find it, all that you have done would be lost; and, on the other hand, if you should find that the ores are abundant and rich and easy to smelt, you take courage to continue without respect for anything. Therefore, in the following book I shall tell you first in general how the assay of all the metals should be made. I shall enlarge in particular on silver more than on any of the others since it is more important. Then I shall tell you how the ores should be prepared for smelting and also how blast furnaces and other furnaces for smelting such ores should be constructed, and finally how all elemental mixtures of metals are to be separated one from the other with the ability and power of art, and how they are reduced to their final perfection and fineness according to their species.

One of the important reserves of mangani-ferous iron ore is at Boston Hill, near Silver City, New Mexico. The area consists of a faulted block of gently dipping Lower Paleozoic shale, dolomite, limestone and sandstone, which has been intruded by a roughly circular mass of quartz-bearing monzonite porphyry and subordinate dikes. Prom a noselike protuherance of the intrusion radiate many premineral faults, which have localized much of the hypogene mineralization. Three important stages of hypogene mineralization can be recognized: (I) mesitite, a manganiferous iron magnesite, (2) quartz sulphides, and (3) barite-galena The carbonate stage is widespread but stronger near the intrusion. The quartz may have been derived from hydrothermal alteration of the igneous rocks. Barite-galena is most important in the Chloride Flat mining district, about one mile north, where argentiferous galena provided silver for the supergene ore. The hypogene carbonate, lean in iron and manganese, has been oxidized and consequently enriched by meteoric waters containing an excess of oxygen and carbon dioxide to form ore bodies of intimately mixed hematite and pyrolusite. The ore bodies, at one place attaining a length of 1600 ft., a width of 300 ft., and a thickness of 25 ft., are largely confined to areas of brecciation and to spreads from faults in Silurian dolomite beneath soft Devonian shale. Boston Hill comprises three rolling hills southwest of and adjoining the town of Silver City (pop. 5044), Grant County, N. Mex. The mining district covers less than 2 sq. miles. Silver City, on a branch line of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway, is a supply point for the important mining communities at Santa Rita, Hurley, Hanover, Tyrone, and Mogollon. The Chloride Flat mining district adjoins Boston Hill on the north. History and Production Bonanza-type silver ores were discovered in the Chloride Flat mining district during the silver boom of the seventies and eighties, at which period it has been credited with as much as $5,000,000 production. In 1916 manganiferous iron ore was first shipped from the Boston Hill mining district to Pueblo, Colo., where it was mixed with manganese ore from Lead-ville and smelted into spiegeleisen. During 1926 and 1927 the Colorado Fuel and Iron Co. mined and churn-drilled part of the district. Mining operations ceased during the depression of the thirties, but production was resumed in 1937. Since 1916 the Boston Hill mining district has produced about 600,000 long tons of ore averaging about 12 per cent manganese and 35 to 40 per cent iron.
