During the year 1941, there was another increase in the production of oil in Argentina, to which the fields in the Comodoro Rivadavia zone in the Territory of Chubut and those of the Provinces of Salta and Mendoza all contributed. The total production for this period reached 22,013,472 bbl., which represents an increase of 6.8 per cent over that of 20,609,538 bbl. in the preceding year. This result is again attributable to the Government oil company, the Yacimientos Petroliferos Fiscales, which had a total production of 14,006,559 bbl. representing an increase of 1,531,904 bbl., or 12.3 per cent over that of the 12,474,655 bbl. of the year before. CHARLES WASHINGTON MERRILL, the second to be honored by the award of the James Douglas gold medal, throughout his entire professional career has been identified with the cyanide method of extracting gold from ore. To his efforts this branch of the metallurgical industry owes a large measure of its success in continuing to treat some gold ores profitably, in spite of economic adversities. Mr. Merrill was born at Concord, N. H., Dec. 21, 1869, and received the degree of B. S. from the School of Mines at the University of California in 1891. Among his first professional connections was the Standard Mining Co., at Bodie, Cal., followed by a short engagement at Harqua Hala, Ariz. From 1895 to 1899 he was connected with the Montana Mining Co., at Marysvale, Mont., and then followed his nine years of fruitful association with the Homestake Mining Co. In 1909, the Merrill Co. was formed, to exploit more than a score of patents granted to Mr. Merrill, covering various phases of the cyanide process and numerous pieces of equipment for its operation; among the most noteworthy of these innovations were the Merrill filter-press, and the use of zinc dust as a precipitant. The Merrill Co. has a long record of successful accomplishments in its chosen field, to mention only the plants at the Dome mines of Ontario and at the Sta. Gertrudis mines of Mexico as among the more recent. Mr. Merrill is president also of the Western Ore Purchasing Co.; and a director in two gold dredging companies of California.

Spectral reflectance data in the wavelength region of 0.45 to 2.4 µm have been obtained for various rock types and different forms of natural vegetation by means of JPL's portable field reflectance spectrometer. Computer analysis of these data has demonstrated the importance of obtaining remotely sensed spectral data beyond the wave- length region sensed by Landsat. Computer processing techniques have been developed and used for the analysis of these data and their application to a variety of geologic problems.

Well locations in water floods frequently do not coincide with the ideal well locations associated with the flood pattern which is used. A question of importance is. "How much oil is lost because of this?". This is the problem treated in this paper. It is assumed that each pattern in a five-spot flood has the proper number of production and injection wells but that the wells may be off-pattern. The distance by which a well is off-patern is given in terms of the pattern spacing, defined as the length of one side of a five-spot. The influence of off-pattern wells on the performance of a five-spot flood has been investigated mathematically for unit mobility ratio. All production and injection rates are assumed to remain equal. The loss in recovery resulting from pattern irregularitie: has been calculated at a cumulative water injection corresponding to a 98 per cent water-cut in a regular five-spot. Displacing a single production or injection well by about one-third the pattern distance reduces the total field recovery by 4.4/N per cent of the recovery obtainable with regular spacing, where N is the number of five-spots in the flood (assumed large). When off-pattern wells are separated by at least one regular five-spot and are displaced by less than one-third the pattern distance, the total loss in recovery in a large-scale flood is, at most, 1 per cent of the recovery obtainable from that field with a regular five-spot pattern. However, much higher losses may occur if the off-pattern wells are not separated by a regular five-spot, if the rates are imbalanced, or if the mobility of the injected water is higher than that of the crude. Although the loss in oil recovery due to pattern irregularity often may be low, the off-pattern case will always require injection of more water to reach the same final water-cut. The volume of water injected per unit volume of oil displaced has been calculated for each five-spot adjacent to a five-spot containing a single 08-pattern well. The cumulative water injection at the time of 98 per cent water-cut may be increased by as much as 37 per cent when a production well is displaced one-third the pattern distance toward an injection well. The existence of differences between actual subsurface locations and the idealized well patterns used in secondary recovery operations is well recognized. However, the methods commonly used for predicting waterflood behavior ignore such differences, even when subsurface locations are known. The reason for this is simple. The idealized well patterns are highly symmetrical and, as such, the production history of the pattern (and even of the field) can be determined from that of a few production wells—usually from only one. Consideration of the many irregular well spacings found in a specific field would entail a large amount of work, and then the results would be applicable only to that specific field. In an attempt to provide an answer to the more general problem, this paper considers a water flood having an idealized well pattern, except for one well which is not at its regular location. When several off-pattern wells are present, their contributions are assumed to be additive unless the off-pattern wells are close to each other. In some research work carried out by the writer, certain results have been obtained which bear on the fundamental nature and origin of coal and the relationship between coal and petroleum. Without entering into a discussion of the details of the experiments, which were conducted on petroleum and derived bitumens, there are given here, by way of definition, some of the relations that the writer has established between certain classes of bitumens of petroliferous origin. Bitumen.—-A natural organic substance, gaseous, liquid, or solid, consisting of hydrocarbons and the oxy-or thionic derivatives of the same, or of a mixture of all three. Diaspha1tenes.—-Those portions of bitumens that are soluble in ether or carbon disulfide, but are insoluble in a mixture of equal parts of ether and alcohol. Diasphaltenes are produced by the oxidation or thionization of petroleum oils; they have, as the name indicates, twice the molecular weight of asphaltenes, into which they are converted when subjected to moderate temperature. For example, an artificially produced diasphaltene, which was readily soluble in pentane and ether, was quite insoluble in either of these solvents after heating for three weeks at a temperature of 100" C., and was converted into an insoluble asphaltene. Aspha1tenes.—Those portions of bitumen that are insoluble in ether or ether alcohol but are soluble in carbon disulfide. Aspha1tites.—Those solid or semisolid natural bitumens that are composed, for the most part, of asphaltenes or diasphaltenes. A pure asphaltitel would be composed wholly of asphaltenes and diasphaltenes, but most asphaltites contain small percentages of oil and wax, which have not yet been converted into asphaltenes; they may also contain A small percent.age of kerotenes, which represent the next stage of the metamorphosis of asphaltenes. Among the naturally occurring oxyasphaltites may be mentioned grahamite; and among the thioasphaltites, gilsonite.

WITHOUT diffusion taking place in liquid metals and alloys, no castings could be made; it is therefore the most important factor affecting the structure of metals. Diffusion involves the interchange of atoms, a process which takes place during the life history of an ingot. In the liquid, atoms are in a state of high thermal agitation, but this thermal vibration is reduced in amplitude with falling temperature. When solidification sets in, the atoms arrange themselves on an ordered space lattice and the changes in structure which take place in the solid are due to the interchange of atoms on this space lattice. The rate of atomic interchange-e.g., of diffusion-is most rapid at temperatures close to the melting point and decelerates as the temperature is lowered. At room temperature, the rate of diffusion is practically negligible in most alloys, and any change in structure can only be brought about by using methods which will accelerate the rate of diffusion. The rate of diffusion depends on three factors (I) temperature; (2) concentration gradient and (3) activation energy. The growth of grains and particles in the solid alloy also depend on these factors and are therefore intimately associated with diffusion. The rate of homogenization in a cast alloy depends on several factors, such as: (I) rate of solidification, which involves grain and particle size which, in their turn, depend on diffusion: (2) the nature of the constituents; (3) the temperature interval between the melting point of the metal or alloy and the temperature at which it is being heat-treated. It is well known that coarse, cast structures are extremely difficult-if possible to homogenize, and the finer the grain size and particle size, the more readily solid solution will take place. The rate of diffusion depends, also, largely on the nature of the constituents; for instance, copper and magnesium form solid solutions with aluminum quite readily but nickel and iron do not; neither do certain intermetallic compounds, such as alpha and beta FeSi. Furthermore, the actual formation of intermetallic compounds may be a very slow process, particularly when they are formed in the solid state as equilibrium products. For example, ßFeSi is formed in the solid as the result of the reaction aFeSi + Al?ß FeSi. The particles of aFeSi become sur¬rounded with a reaction ring of ßßFeSi. This layer is formed as the result of diffusion of atoms taking place between the aluminum matrix and aFeSi. As the amount of ßFeSi surrounding the core of aFeSi increases the concentration gradient becomes low and so the rate of diffusion of atoms also decreases until it practically ceases. This occurs after a comparatively thin layer of ßFeSi has been formed. It follows that when intermetallic compounds of this type are formed in the solid, as the result of diffusion, it is generally impossible ever to attain equilibrium, since the forma-

crystal prior to, polishing in order to eliminate coring. This treatment may be accomplished by wrapping the single crystal tightly in very thin, dead soft, brass foil and annealing in the presence of air for 20 hr at 800°C. Since the wrapping encircles the sptcimen three to four times, only a very slight amount of oxidation occurs on the specimen surface. On unwrapping one of these cylindrical single crystals. in. in diam by ro in. long (72.75 pct cu, 27.23 pct Zn, 0.01 pct P11, 0.01 pct re), mall light-gray depnrrits in the form of circular arcs werenoted on the part nf the foil which had been in contact with the single crystal, Fig r. (By superim- approximatetl). These deposits, which, from their color, suggest the appearance of sublimated zinc, were found to coincide roughly with a set of octahedral planes nearly perpendicular to the rod axis. The pattern shorn in the figure held no relation to the profle of the sample since the markin~s on the crystal More annealing werc attributed to traces of cube planes. It seems very likely that the deposits were formed by sutllimation of zinc diffusing from octahrdral planes since diffusian would Eogically take place along planes of maximum atomic spacing. However, it is difficult to understand why a continuous sublimation of zinc should occur from a single crystat in contact with a wrapping roil OF the same composition, and why diffusion would take place along specific octahedral planes and in a regular pattern.

Although it has long been realized that gas recovery from a water-drive gas reservoir may be poor because of high residual saturations under water drive, it appears that only limited infomlation on the subject has been available until recently. This study was performed to show the qiiantitative potential importance of water influx. Results indicate that gas recovery may be very low in some cases: perhaps as low as 45 per cent of the initial gas in place. Gas recovery under water drive appear to depend in an important was on: (I) the prodirction rate and manner of production; (2) the residual gas saturation; (3) aquifer propertie.); and (4) the volumetric displacement effciency of water invading the gas reservoir. The manner of estimating water-drive gas reservoir recovery can vary considerably. Examples are: the steady-state tnethorl. the Hurst modified steady-state method, and various unsteady-state methods such ac. those of van Ever-dingen-Hurst, Hurst, and Carter-Tracy. The Carter-Tracy water influx expression was used in this study. In certain cases, it appears that gas recovery can be increased significantly by controlling the production rate and manner of production. For this reason, the potential importance of water influx in particular gas reservoirs should he investigated early to permit adequtrtr planning lo optirtize the pay reserves. INTRODUCTION In recent years, the economic importance of natural gas production has become increasingly apparent. This has been evidenced by more intensive exploration efforts aimed at gas production, and exploitation of both deep, as well as low-permeability gas reservoirs. Technical developments such as deep-penetration fracturing have made development of such formations economically feasible. Unfortunately, water influx has forced abandonment of a number of gas reservoirs at extraordinarily high pressures. Although reservoir engineering methods for estimating water influx have long been available, it appears that application of these methods to the water-drive gas reservoir has been sporadic.'a Available methods for estimating water influx which can be applied to the water-drive gas reservoir problem include the steady-state method,1 the Hurst modified steady-state method and various unsteady-state methods such as those of van Everdingen-Hurst. Hurst, and Carter-Tracy. Interesting applications of these solu- tions to gas reservoir and the aquifer gas-storage problems have appeared recently.3,12,14 The experimental study of residual gas saturations under water drive by Geffen et al. in 1952 indicated that residual gas saturations could be extremely high. A value of 35 per cent of pore volume is often used in field practice when specific information is not available. The study of Geffen et al. showed that residual gas saturation might be much higher in some cases. Naar and Henderson concluded that the residual non-wetting phase saturation under imbibition should be about half of the initial non-wetting phase saturation. The Naar and Henderson result that residual gas saturation under water influx should be about half the original gas saturation is recommended as an estimate if laboratory measurements are not available. Thus, it is clear that a considerable portion of the initial gas in place might be trapped in a water-drive gas reservoir as residual gas at high pressure. A full water-drive would result in loss of residual gas trapped at initial reser.voir pressure. Consideration of transient aquifer behavior leads to the conclusion that high-rate production of water-drive gas reservoirs could result in improved gas recovery by reduction of the abandonment pressure. However, there appears to be little quantitative information on this possibility. One of the few advantages of water-drive gas production appears to be improved deliverability through water-drive support of the reservoir pressure. There may also be an advantage in higher condensate recovery caused by pressure maintenance for gas-condensate water-drive reservoirs. In view of the preceding, this study was made to assess the potential importance of water-drive in gas reservoir engineering. The Carter-Tracy approximate water-influx expression was used because this equation offers some advantages in hand-calculation which do not appear to have been generally recognized.' However, calculations were performed in the main with a high-speed digital computer to permit evaluation of the effect of water-drive under a large variety of conditions. CALCULATION METHOD Water-drive gas reservoir performance can be estimated in a manner completely analogous to oil reservoir calculations: a materials balance is written for the reservoir, and a water influx equation is written for the aquifer. Siniltaneous solution provides the cun~ulative water influx and the reservoir pressure. When reservoir performance data (gas produced and reservoir pressures) are available, it is usually possible to match performance data to determine the initial gas in place and the water influx parameters —

Some of the limiting factors relative to explosive crushing of rock and ways to overcome a few of these problems are presented. Relationships between borehole diameters, bench heights, and spacings, along with a review of the influence geometry has on energy as these are changed, are discussed. Efficiency in use of explosives and the decay of energy as it moves through rock and is absorbed and dissipated, is described, along with fragmentation as a function of spacings and energy zoning, etc. Communications are one of the major problems encountered. In an effort to provide a better understanding of the use of explosives, it is necessary to take a little different view of what explosives are, how to look at them as tools to fragment rock, and some of the problems encountered in doing so. First, take the explosive: although there are many factors involved, consider these as being reduced to only two — shock-strain imparted to the rock by the high early development of energy, and the gas effect which is a combination of heat, moles of gas formed, rate of formation of these gases which develop pressures, etc. First, consider shock energy by itself and assume there is no gas effect in the reaction. Fig. 1 illustrates a block or cube of rock, in the center of which is detonated an explosive charge which is 100% shock energy. Tensile slabbing would be seen on the surface and probably the cube of rock would generally hang together even though microcracks were formed. If the situation is reversed and an explosive whch has no shock energy and only gas effect (Fig. 2) is considered, the cube of rock would act as a pressure vessel and contain the pressure from the gas effect until it exceeded the rock-vessel strength; then the rock would break in a few large pieces. If these two kinds of energy are put together and the area of shock-strain around the explosive (Fig. 3) is considered, the two energies will be seen working together to furnish broken rock. The gas effect applies pressure to the microcracks formed from the shock energy to weaken the rock-pressure vessel and propagate these cracks to break the rock apart. It not only will be broken more finely, but will break apart at a lower pressure than the gaseffect case, since the shock energy has first weakened the rock vessel. Although tensile spalling from the shock-strain imparts momentum to the rock, the main source of displacement comes from the gas effect. The term "rock" is being used to mean any material to be blasted. These energies are absorbed by the rock in different ways. First, classify rock into two main categories: "elastic" and "plastic-acting." Elastic rock should be thought of as rock which can transmit a shock wave and is high in compressive strength, such as granite or quartzite. Since this elastic rock transmits a shock wave well, it makes good use of the shock energy from the explosive-forming cracks, etc., for the gas effect to work on. Plastic-acting rocks are rock masses which are relatively low in compressive strength and absorb shock energy at a much faster rate, thereby making poor use of the shock energy by not developing as extensive a cracked zone for the gas effect to work on. Rocks of this type are generally softer materials such as some limestones, sandstones, and porphyries. For the most part, the shockenergy part of the explosive reaction is wasted in plastic-acting rock, leaving most of the work to the gas effect. Since the ratio of gas effect to shock energy is different in different explosives, it is easy to understand why some explosives perform well in elastic rock and poorly in plastic-acting rock, and vice versa. Some of the most difficult blasting situations arise when mixtures of plastic-acting and elastic rock are encountered (Fig. 4). Fig. 4 shows an example of granite boulders cemented together with something like a decomposed quartz monzonite which is plastic-acting. The elastic granite boulders will transmit the shock-strain within itself, but when this shock tries to move through the monzonite to the next boulder, its intensity is absorbed by the monzonite and little shock-strain is placed on the adjoining boulder. In addition to this loss by absorbtion, shock reflection at the surface of the boulder will effect tensile spalling. The net effect is poor breakage of the boulders which do not have drillholes in them as they simply will be popped out with the muck. The same is true (Fig. 5) when layers and joints make

THE technique developed by Duwez, Willens and Kle-ment' for rapid solidification of molten alloys in small quantities by ejecting them on to a highly conducting substrate with the aid of a shock wave has come to be known as "liquid quenching" or "splat cooling" in literature and has already been applied to alloys of many binary systems.' The very high cooling rates of the order of l060 to 1080 per sec obtained in this technique and the consequent drastic undercooling of the melt have led to such striking results as formation of new amorphous and crystalline metastable phases and extension of solid-solubility limits in many alloy systems. The cooling rates in these experiments can, however, be neither accurately measured nor effectively controlled and hence the occurrence of either more than one metastable phase or appreciable differences in constitution in splat-cooled alloys of the same composition cannot be ruled out.3 In fact, workers in two laboratories have reported formation of two different cubic metastable phases in liquid-quenched Au-Si alloys containing 17 to 20 at. pct si.4,5 The present note deals with some new and interesting results obtained in a Ag-21 at. pct Ge alloy and a Au-27 at. pct Ge alloy subjected to the liquid-quenching treatment at different cooling rates. Two alloys of nearly the same composition had earlier been rapidly solidified by the standard "gun technique" in the same laboratory and shown to solidify in nonequilibrium structures, viz., an hcp phase (a = 2.987Å;c =4.718Å) in the Ag-Ge system6,7 and both hcp (a = 2.885Å; c = 4.754Å) and tetragonal (a = 11.627A; c = 22.491Å) phases in the Au-Ge system.3 Apart from different substrates (copper and stainless steel), different melt temperatures (50º to 500°C above the liquidus), and different capillary sizes (0.4 to 1.5 mm diam) in the "gun technique", slower cooling rates of the order of l050C per sec were also obtained in the present work by replacing the substrate by water at room temperature in a modification of the technique due to Olsen and Hultgren.8 No attempt was made to measure the cooling rate in any experiment. The products varied from fine powder (>40 pct by wt—200 mesh) obtained by quenching in water to thin flakes and foils (11.0 sq mm to 4.0 sq cm) produced by splat cooling. They were subjected to the Debye-Scherrer method of X-ray examination in each case. In case of the Ag-Ge alloy, in addition to the expected metastable hcp phase,6 a coexistent tetragonal phase (a = 5.093,Å; c = 7.009Å) was detected in some experiments. Eight weak X-ray reflections from this phase could be identified, two of them being the same as reported earlier.7 With increase in the cooling rate, the dominant hcp phase seems to be first accompanied by traces of silver or germanium and then either homogeneous or mixed with traces of this new tetragonal phase. The splat-cooled Au-Ge alloy showed generally the expected hcp and tetragonal phases,3 but sometimes traces of germanium were also present. Laboratory batch flotation rests are used for comparison of the floatability of ores and for comparison of the effect of various treatments on ore floatability. Although it is difficult to predict exact recoveries for continuous flotation on the basis of batch tests, considerable quantitative information can be obtained through their use. A simple method is presented which provides a convenient means of quantitatively evaluating results from laboratory batch tests. The information obtained is in the form of a discrete flotation rate distribution, which, if desired, can be used directly in a simulation of continuous flotation. Equation of Batch Flotation The validity for batch flotation of the first-order kinetic equation is accepted: [ ] where k is flotation rate of a class of articles and W (t) is weight of particles of the class in cell at time t. THE TTT-curve for the beginning of transformation in hypoeutectoid steels containing appreciable amounts of relatively strong carbide-forming alloying elements often exhibits a "bay" at intermediate temperatures. In many of these steels, proeutectoid ferrite is the initial product of the decomposition of austenite not only at temperatures above the bay but also in an appreciable temperature range below the region of the bay. Hultgren has postulated that ferrite formed above the bay, termed "orthoferrite", contains the equilibrium concentration of alloying element at temperatures above the eutectoid range, and the extrapolated metastable equilibrium concentration at lower temperatures. The ferrite formed below the bay, on the other hand, termed "paraferrite", was assumed to inherit completely the bulk alloy content of the austenite without regard for the compositional requirements of equilibrium. As shown schematically in Fig. 1, the two types of ferrite were taken to have different Ae3 temperatures and different C-curves on a TTT-diagram. Their different kinetic behaviors were thus considered responsible for the bay in the TTT-curve for the proeutectoid ferrite reaction in this type of alloy steel.

Passage of the Mining Act of 1866, superseded by the Act of 1872, was the first major entry of the Federal Government into the problems of mining. Such a law was necessary simply to help re- solve a number of disputes in mining. Now, however, a hundred years later, the extent of government involvement in the mineral industry often comes as a shock to the mining engineer who has reached management level. In fact, he has been poorly prepared for an understanding of the role of government in the industry and he becomes frustrated, even hostile. In our political system, private industry is responsible for producing minerals and the Government sees to it that production will be adequate for a peace-time economy and for any emergency. There have been great social and political changes since World War I1 with the result that the Government's participation in our society has steadily increased. What is believed to be an Aztec, or possibly a Toltec, mirror, is claimed to have been taken from one of the tombs at Cholula, near the city of Puebla, Mexico, where there is a mound of considerable size, in fact a hill, largely constructed of adobe bricks by the Toltecs, or by those who antedated them. The mirror is formed from a mass of what is evidently pyrite, is nearly a true hemisphere, having a diameter of 3 1/8 inches, and weighs 19 ounces. From its unusual size it is believed to have been hung about the neck of an idol. Other Aztec mirrors of smaller dimensions, and of less weight, so as to be carried about the person, are known; but the one exhibited, being heavy, was apparently intended to be held in the hollow of the hand, in which it fits, and may have been utilized to flash heliotropic signals. The entire surface, both of the base and of the convex portion of the hemisphere proper, has been beautifully polished, but, for some reason, the mirror has been shamefully abused, the edges having been broken, and the center of the base defaced, possibly by some one testing it for precious metals. Industrial minerals - being the basic materials for much of the industrial activity in the world -suffer or gain in the market place with changes in that activity. The period 1970 and early 1971 has been one of little growth in many of the mineral-consuming industries, particularly those associated with building and construction. Consequently, the production of many commodities revealed little or no increase above 1969 levels. The pick-up of construction activity in the last half of 1971, however, is expected to be at an intensity which will result in an over-all good year; for example, cement shipments may, establish a record. Some industrial minerals products that bucked downward trends were those allied with the agricultural industry. Phosphate rock shipments increased, particularly from Florida which contributes over 400/c of the phosphate rock in the western world. Potash had higher sales and production for the third straight year, which means that inventories are being eased. The catch-all term of ecology is an oft-mentioned theme among industrial minerals suppliers. Specifically, the need for control of dust emissions is adding a heavy capital investment burden to many of the producers; such a burden, in fact, that plants have had to cease operations because the cost of dust collection equipment could not be born. As an order-of-magnitude estimate, dust collection equipment for cement plants can run $2-3 million for a single plant; some estimates are that the total cost of dust collection equipment in a new plant can be approximately 20% of total investment. All minerals processers have dust control expense of greater or lesser proportion.

RATHBUN,* Salt Lake City, Utah (written discussion?).¬While the engineer should carefully weigh the merits of the various types of equipment, he must bear in mind that the object of his plant is the recovery of suspended solids, and a thing is unimportant except as it contributes to this end, other engineering principles being duly considered. The controversy regarding the use of synchronous motor-driven rectifiers by which the power for the treater is taken directly from the mains of the local power system, rather than the motor-generator rectifier giving each treater unit its own isolated electrical system, has led many to think that on the type of rectifier depends the success of .the plant. It is in fact a relatively unimportant part of the plant and represents a very small fraction of the investment; the recoveries in dust and fume are practically the same in each case. One large smelting concern has adopted the motor-generator type for all of its plants after years of experience with the synchronous-motor type. Its reasons are practically the same as those set down by Mr. Eschholz for his preference. Given more in detail they are: 1. An independent electric system prevents outside power-line conditions, like voltage fluctuations, from interfering with the operation of the Cottrell plant and eliminates the possibility of the Cottrell plant causing trouble for the power company. FOR some time melters and metallurgists have recognized the fact that steels may be made to identical compositions as ordinarily analyzed, but with considerable variations in physical properties. Good melting practice signifies a combination of furnace operations that will produce steel with consistently good physical properties after proper consideration of cost, production efficiency, and chemical control. In acid practice, these operations may be classified fundamentally as: (I) the oxidizing boil, (2) recarburization and deoxidation, (3) slag adjustment, and (4) final deoxidation. These operations affect the properties of the steel through variations in the minute quantities of several microscopic, submicroscopic, and dissolved constituents, which are out of reach of ordinary analyses but are very influential upon the crystallographic slippage and the molecular cohesion of the structure. One of these constituents is the FeO left in solution in the steel. Herty has shown that steels high in dissolved FeO have decreased ductility and impact and increased hardness and electrical resistance. There is also much evidence that FeO in solution affects carbon solubility and diffusion, and consequently abnormality and carburizing behavior.

Today there is unparalleled opportunity for constructive effort in the national mineral economy on the part of the Land-Grant colleges and universities. The matter is too important to be pushed aside. It is inevitable that in the aftermath of World War II, conscientious Americans the country over should want to take stock of national resources. Attention is now centered, as never before, on our mineral potentialities. Opportunities and responsibilities are unparalleled and a condition exists which will not occur for another generation. Mineral industries educators cannot pro- vide the answer without taking stock of its component parts, organizing, planning, and taking action in a real dynamic sense. The services encompassed by the various fields of mineral industries must be utilized to help in the solution of problems provided by the international emergency, the country's needs, the people's needs. Mineral industries colleges have a vital role in technical aid to backward countries through foreign student programs, especially in the Latin Americas.1 By helping them to help themselves develop and utilize their resources to the fullest, we will be helping ourselves.
