EDUCATION is a business; and, if the consumer is satisfied with the product, no one has any grounds for complaint. "Pretty well satisfied" about slims up the attitude of the mining industry toward the young graduates presently entering the field. Yet, with amazing regularity the controversy over the five-year curriculum recurs in educational circles. The educational mills grind out their products, some higher grade than others, depending on individual proclivity. The cycle continues almost without interruption. Arthur Taggart, however, takes his bowie knife to some of the sturdiest limbs of the tree of knowledge in his article on engineering education on page 770 of this issue. As all who know him might suspect, the pruning is not restrained. With one swing of the knife, such practically-labeled courses as Mine Design are stricken from the tree and transplanted to the field of Graduate Education. Emphasis on the basic sciences and the study of man through courses in history, economics, and literature are recommended to constitute an undergraduate curriculum. Such courses show the least depreciation and therefore give the student the most for his money. Partial justification for this dramatic departure from tradition is explained by the increasing number of companies giving training courses. Why make the student pay for what he can get paid for learning after graduation, the author argues. Other leading educators espouse this doctrine. Dean S. C. Hollister of Cornell, for the Committee on Adequacy and Standards of Engineering Education, recommended to ECPD in 1951 that emphasis be placed on the basic sciences. "Sifting back through the curriculum, it seems clear that instruction in the basic sciences, if taught in a manner such that knowledge of them makes available working tools, contributes the most sustaining part of the curriculum", reported the committee. Note that he would utilize practical problems from the fields of engineering in teaching the sciences. In our opinion the important thing to learn in college is how to think the engineering approach. Recitation on traditional solutions of classic problems sharpens the memory, not the ingenuity of the student. The engineering schools of the nation recognize the advantage of great emphasis on fundamentals, and the inclusion of cultural courses in the curriculum. However, industry presently requires graduates to have a substantial knowledge of the tools of the trade upon graduation. This means that the colleges are forced to pare to the bone to encompass the required studies in the time allotted. In addition, there is the limitation of student money. College educators also claim that entering freshmen are often improperly prepared in such subjects as writing and mathematics. These considerations make it difficult for the critic of the engineering graduate to make any headway with the educators. Actually with the mounting problems imposed by lower grade and more complex ores, a new breed of engineers is needed. The impetus for this new product must come from industry. If there was a concerted effort from industry for an improved type of engineer, the colleges would modify their aims to meet the demand for the kind of individual desired.

Nearly 7 5 per cent of the total coke production in the United States in 1940 was consumed in blast furnaces. In 1939 the percentage was 69.9, and in 1938 it was 61.3. To produce a net ton of pig iron 1757 lb. of coke was required in 1940 and 1760 lb. in 1939. These figures indicate how dependent the production of pig iron is upon the production of coke. The rate of iron production is in some measure influenced by the physical and chemical characteristics of the coke. Blast-furnace operators believe that the physical properties of coke profoundly influence the operation of the furnace. Although it is true that coke of a wide variety of physical properties is used in American blast furnaces, the periodic fluctuation of these properties is one of the causes of irregularity of blast-furnace operation. The purpose of this paper is to present a broad picture of the physical properties of by-product coke that are generally considered to be important by coke-oven and blast-furnace operators. Effects of the kind of coal used, the preparation of the coal, the rate of coking, and other factors will be considered. Of all these variables, the kind of coal used is by far the most important. In this discussion use will be made of the method of coal classification by rank1 standardized by the American Society for Testing Materials. Although this method of classification has been an American standard for several years, it has not been given the attention it deserves, especially in connection with the selection of coal for production of coke. Despite the fact that many producers of blast-furnace coke are limited to some particular source or sources of coal, a good understanding of the principles involved in setting up the standard method of classification may lead to a better appreciation of the causes of changes in coke characteristics. Furthermore, where it is necessary to select new coals as a substitute for the original supply, this method of classification can be of great assistance. The data presented have been gathered from many sources, but no attempt has been made to cover the vast literature. Instead, some of the more important data have been selected to show how coals and their carbonization affect some of the physical properties of coke. It must be emphasized that generalizations concerning the behavior of coking coals are presented and that individual coals may vary widely from the specific behavior depicted. Nevertheless, it is believed that the data illustrate certain typical behaviors. Neither was it possible to cover completely all the factors involved; for example, the macroscopic constituents of coal are believed to have important effects on the physical properties of coke, but since there is little information available for such study, and since vitrain, clarain, and durain are neither

The effects of anisotropic or directional permeability on the areal sweep efficiency and the flow capacity are examined. The paper points out the importance of taking directional permeability into consideration in planning a flood. It analyzes the two-dimensional flow pattern associated with the skewed line drive for a unit mobility ratio. The direct and staggered line drives are treated as special cases of the skewed line drive. Analytical expressions are developed for the areal sweep efficiency at breakthrough and the flow capacity. They are related to the spacing between like wells, the distance between a row of injectors and the nearest row of producers, and the degree of skewness of the line drive. The latter quantity is defined such that it is equal to zero for the direct line drive and equals one-half for the staggered line drive. The areal sweep efficiency and the flow capacity depend also on the orientation of the flood pattern with respect to the principal axis of anisotropy. The paper provides a simple method for determining the areal sweep efficiency and the flow capacity for a formation in which the permeability in the bedding plane is anisotropic. INTRODUCTION Directional or anisotropic permeability is manifested by the ability of the formation to conduct fluids more readily along certain preferred directions. This situation occurs in many producing formationsl-4 and is usually attributed to depositional features in which the sand grains are oriented in a preferred direction. In some cases it results from the formation of a major and a minor fracture system. 4 Directional permeability should be taken into account in many phases of the production and exploration activities. Recognizing its existence in the formation of interest and planning accordingly can lead to increased recovery and substantial savings. For instance, the areal sweep efficiency in a water flood depends to a great extent on the orientation of the flood pattern with respect to the principal axis of permeability. Anisotropic5 permeability is specified by the directions of its three principal axes and the permeability along each axis. The principal axes of permeability are mutually perpendicular. This paper deals with the areal sweep efficiency at breakthrough and the flow capacity for formations with aniscltropic permeability. The flood pattern considered consists of alternate rows of injecting and producing wells. The rows of wells are parallel and form a developed, skewed line drive which is illustrated in Fig. 1. The staggered and direct line drives are treated as special cases of the skewed line drive. PRELLMINARY CONSIDERATIONS The formations considered in this paper are assumed to be of uniform thickness and porosity. McLaUghlin, San Francisco, Ca1.—It seems to me that Mr. Snelling's work, if it is what it appears to be, is one of the most important contributions to petroleum technology that has been brought out in the last 25 years. If his end products are what they seem to be, he has made. a discovery, which, in my judgment, will revolutionize the petroleum industry. As to industrially carrying out these processes I do not think there is the slightest difficulty, for I have had some work recently where crude oils were handled successfully at a temperature of 750" F, and pressure of 750 lb. per square inch. William A. WillIams, San francisco, Ca1.—What metal did you use, Mr. McLaughlin? A. C. McLauGHILIN.—Ordinaly seamless tubing, extra strong. William A. Williams.—Tests were made in Dr. Rittman's experimental plant at Pittsburgh, upon samples of residuum furnished by Mr. Bell, the residuum being the remainder of the crude oil after the lighter fractions had been removed. After the material had been run through Dr. Bittman's plant, yields of from 43 to 58 per cent. of material, boiling under 150" C. were obtained. The distillate had a peculiar odor, due to the presence of benzene, toluene, and other unsaturated hydrocarbons. W. N. Best, New York, N. Y.—What is the difference between the Rittman and the Snelling process or system? William A. Williams.—he fundamental difference is that reactions take place under relatively higher temperatures and pressures and with none of the oil present in its original or liquid state, while the reactions secured by Mr. Snelling and other investigators have been from the liquids in the presence of some vapors. Under such conditions as Mr. Snelling operates, the temperatures and pressures used are limited and the flexibility in the control of these variables is extremely limited when compared with the Rittman process.

Metallurgical changes in SAE 52100 ball-bearing components resulting from overload testing are described. Changes in microstructure, hardness, and resiclctal stresses crre discussed zuitlz re.ference to material cleanliness obtained by various steel-melting practices and are compared with work by otlzer investigators. Evidence is presented to show that the initialion and development of microstruc-tural alterations are characterized by two separate reactions: the appeavance of a "dark etchingJ' constituent, and "gray lines" or a light etclzing constituent. The dependency of these tzvo reactions on material cleunliness, running tirne, and contact stresses is discussed and a failure mode related to material cleanliness and microstructural transformation is proposed. THE study of ball- and roller-bearing contact fatigue has been paced by a strong emphasis on bears ing application performance. Particular attention has been paid to conditions that effect the spalling-type failure that is characteristic of rolling contact fatigue in through-hardened components. Some of the conditions investigated are lubrication and atmosphere,1-3 material characteristics and finish,475 and speed and design fa~tors."~ A typical spalling-type failure is shown in Fig. 1. The arrow shows the motion of the ball relative to the inner-ring race surface. The leading edge of the spall is usually sharper than the trailing edge. The race surface near the trailing edge also shows small dents caused by debris from the spall. In this type of testing very little metallurgical investigation is done on failed bearings. Emphasis is placed on test conditions and statistical analyses of endurance data. More basic work has been done relating micro-structural changes to fatigue performance. Dyer" and Wood, Cousland, and sargant9 have used mostly simple materials, such as single crystals and single-phase polycrystalline specimens, under simple alternating strain to identify a systematic process of fatigue damage. drutowski" was concerned primarily with the relationship between steel structure, contact stress, and energy losses in rolling contact. dones11 and Bush, Grube, and Robinson12 utilized changes in microstructure and residual stress in overload-tested rolling contact elements as a means of investigating the fatigue process. Work is being done on an ASME-sponsored contract,13 using both simple and complex materials, but there is still a long way to go before such theories as pore and void growth in simple structures can be applied to the relatively complex bearing steel microstructure. The purpose of this paper is to report on an investigation into the effect of steel cleanliness on the structural alteration and residual stress changes found in overload-tested ball bearings. Using these results and those of previous investigators, we will propose probable failure mechanisms in both overload- and normal load-tested ball bearings.14,15 PROCEDURE Ball bearings? 3208 size, were fabricated from SAE 52100 steel obtained by five different melting practices. The melting practices, chemistry, and inclusion ratings for the five lots of steel are summarized in Tables I and 11. The nonmetallic inclusion ratings were determined by the Jernkontoret method described in ASTM E45-51 Method A. This technique consists of microscopically examining a series of polished samples taken from specified locations in the ingots, billets, or bars. Each sample is surveyed at XlOO magnification and the inclusion types and sizes are compared to standard fields. ThE country rock of the Mavrovouni mine of the Cyprus Mines Corp. is hydro-thern~ally altered, disintegrated pillow lava, with very little tensile strength ("short" ground). In places, especially when wet, it is heavy ground, though not extremely heavy except where movement has been caused by underlying or nearby stoping operations. Damage by caving from roof or sides of galleries is not sudden but progressively faster when the size of the cave increases as a result of the fall of small pieces. CeMent and Concrete Linings During early operations, galleries in the country rock were supported by customary mine-timbering methods. Available timber, howcver, was of poor quality and of relatively high price, and replacements were frequent and expensive. Furthermore, the massive sulphide ore bodies required large volumes of fresh air for ventilation and cooling, and it was therefore desirable to provide smooth-lined galleries with low resistance for the introduction of air to the ore bodies. It was also desirable to eliminate hazards of fire in shafts and underground workings insofar as this would be practical. Cement and concrete were relatively cheap, and plans for using these in support of shafts, underground galleries, raises, and chutes, were developed steadily. Circular shafts with diameters ranging from 10 to 15 ft were adopted for all permanent shafts and airways. In places these were lined with concrete poured behind sectional pressed-steel forms especially constructed for this purpose. In other places, they were lined with precast-concrete blocks. It was found that such precast concrete of good quality could be produced on mass production scale and delivered at the mine from most favorable point of manufacture, at a cost of about 25 cents per cubic foot of concrete. This refers to prewar costs. As the use of concrete blocks in circular lined galleries was developed, it was found that there were very great advantages in the reduction of air resistance as compared with customary timber supports. After best methods had been developed, it was found that breakage and replacements were extraordinarily low, averaging only about 11\2 pct per year during a period of about 15 years. Furthermore, it has been possible to reclaim for re-use a very large percentage of the concrete blocks from abandoned galleries. During the history of the operations precast-concrete blocks have been used for lining shafts, raises, ore chutes, galleries, and shaft stations, ranging from 3 to 16 ft id. The thickness of lining has varied from 5 to 10 in.; with 12 in. thickness in a few cases. Junctions of two galleries at angles ranging from about 30 to 60° are usually made of poured concrete behind sectional forms, or of a combination of poured concretc and precast blocks. That variations in the humidity of the air and in the moisture content of a mixture of broken solids being separated electrostatically cause trouble is not new.' Much of the reputation for unreliability commonly ascribed to the electrostatic separation processes is probably due to this one factor alone. Some operators dry thoroughly before separating; and while this is good in many instances, there are others in which it is not the remedy for trouble. Some mixtures behave best in very dry air and with the mixtures fed to the separator while hot to reduce the adsorbed water content. On the other hand, an overdried mixture on coming to equilibrium with more humid air, has been known to take up moisture selectively on one family of particles, as of coal in the presence of slate and clay, and give sharper electrostatic separation. From these observations it is concluded that there is a permissible moisture content for a particle and also for the atmosphere surrounding it, if in equilibrium, at which the particle will have a conductivity or cntact potential2-4 that is ideal for electrostatic separation. This permissible moisture content varies between a wide range of limits for the different materials that are are and with the kind of electrostatic separating process used. Water can be present as a result of adsorption and condensation from the atmosphere, as an accumulation before or during mining, or as a residue from a previous process step. The water may exist as a liquid film or as an adsorbed layer of vapor. If the water exceeds permissible limits it must be removed. Its state determines the method. Drying by evaporation is necessary for adsorbed water, for part of the liquid-film water (that is, up to several percent of the dry weight), and for free water in the internal structure. Large water contents may be removed by drainage Or filtration. At just what point mechanical removal should cease and drying by evaporation begin depends upon the method of mechanical removal and its cost. Particles can also be separated according to their differences in dielectric constant when suspended in a liquid of intermediate dielectric constant. Recovery of this liquid presents a a problem' Permissible Moisture The adsorbed moisture on the outer surface of minerals can be quickly removed or replaced. Accordingly, in speaking of adsorbed moisture contents, either that of the solid or that of the surrounding air may be considered, the two values being connected by a distribution coefficient which varies with the temperature. However, such a condition does not necessarily exist in processes where an initially dry material is suddenly introduced into an atmosphere having a partial pressure of water vapor or where a moist material is suddenly introduced into a dry atmosphere. This paper Donald describes how New Jersey Zinc Co. made surveys for a connection between the Ivanhoe and Van Mater shafts at Austinville, Va. Except to say that the two faces had to meet "accurately" on line and grade, Donald does not indicate the required precision. Assuming that there were 24 angles in the 1 ½ -mile traverse and 15 in the one-mile traverse, it can be shown that if the average error in plumbing each shaft was ±30" and the average error in measuring each traverse angle was ±10", then the average error at the point of connection would have been about ±1.9 ft normal to the line between the shafts. This calculation assumes that any errors in the triangulation would be negligible compared with the errors in the plumbings and traverses, and it also neglects taping errors. With no constant errors or blunders, the latter would be important only in lines normal to the line between the shafts.

This paper is a description of the opera-tion and results of a Humphreys Spiral Silt Cleaning Plant at the Powderly Colliery 01 The Hudson Coal Co. during the first nine months of operation and follows a preliminary description given at the .Institute cite Institute in May, 1947, in a paper titled "Preparation of Anthracite Silt for Boiler Fuel in a Humphreys Spiral Test Plant" by H. H. Otto, V. H. Wilson and W. L. Dennen. This plant is considered a full size op-erating test plant and, like all new plants, numerous minor changes in the methods of operation have been made from time to time to secure the results desired. Views of the silt preparation plant and of the screening house are given in Fig I and 2. This plant consists of 48 spirals in 8 batteries of 6 spirals each, 36 of which were to be operated as primary spirals and the remaining 12 as secondary spirals. A brief description of the plant and its operation follows. The only material cleaned at the plant during 1947 was that carried in the underflow from the Thickener which han-dles the Breaker waste water. This under-flow, amounting to approximately 2000 gpm of water and containing 12.6 pct of solids, is pumped to vibrating screens where the plus 3/16-in. material is removed. (Fig 3). This oversize material drops into a pocket from which it is trucked to the run-of-mine tipple for re-preparation.

IN discussion of Dr. Fitterer's paper on electrolytic separation of slag inclusions, some results from experiments on electrolyzing high-carbon steels at the SKF Research Laboratory were given.1 We had been working for a number of years on chemical methods of separating the inclusions but could not find any solvent that would dissolve the steel without attacking some of the inclusions, particularly the sulfides in which we were mostly interested at the time, nor any that would dissolve all sulfide or silica in filings as fine as 300 mesh without attacking the iron. Electrolytic methods had also been tried without any real progress until we learned from the Bureau of Mines about the use of the collodion membrane around the anode. Our early difficulties were to some extent different from those of the Bureau of Mines, perhaps because of experimenting on steels of higher carbon content, but most of our difficulties were of the same nature as those of the Bureau. Formation of large quantities of basic hydroxides use of impure and oxidized ferrous sulfate. To protect from oxidation from the atmosphere during electrolysis, after purer chemicals were obtained, a thin layer, 1/8 in. or less, of molten paraffin was poured over the surface of the cathode liquid, where it solidified. It was found desirable also to hold the cathode chamber slightly acid by initial addition of 0.1 per cent acid (sulfuric or hydrochloric) to prevent precipitation of the hydroxide. This acidity would decrease gradually and the cathode chamber would become neutral before the end of the electrolyzing. The increase in acidity in the anode chamber during our early experiments had appeared to cause attack of the precipitated sulfides in the residue, which originally was analyzed by volumetric method for sulfur, and for this reason a 10 per cent sodium citrate solution was substituted for the sulfate in the anode chamber.

R. B. BRinsmade, Ixmiquilpan, Hgo., Mexico (written discussion").—how far ahead of the United States are the self-governing British colonies in their application of economic democracy is well illustrated by Mr. Godson's paper. To prove this, I need quote only two of his assertions, the italics being mine: "lt is a stern fundamental principle that a11 natural resources are the inalienable property of the crown.'' "The right to a claim should only exist as long as it is worked or taxed to insure work. Once depart from that sound maxim, there results improper control of the natural resources of the country, which primarily belong to the people." These assertions formed the basis of my criticism1 of Dr. Raymond's paper in 1913, and they should be inscribed in letters of gold above the entrance to the office of every county recorder in the United States. I venture to assert that the existing United States mineral land laws are essentially unfair to the nation and a hindrance to the legitimate miner, because they fail to embody the above quoted principlca; and this applies both to state laws east of the Mississippi and to federal laws in the West. That these laws favor the forestaller and the monopolist, defraud the government of its fair share of the profits of mineral production, and tend to industrial feudalism must be evident to any competent unbiassed observer. The fact that no serious political movement arose to change them, until the conservation agitation of the last decade, may be largely explained by two salient conditions. First, as stated by President Winchell, "for a long time there was such a vast surplus, or excessive amount of unwanted, undesirable land in the West that the land offices did not scrutinize the claim sought to be located;" second, that the millions of individual farm owners throughout the country could easily be aroused, by the special pleaders hired by the great land speculators and monopolists, to use their vast political power for the suppression of any statesmen striving to incorporate in our semi-feudal land laws any such principles as those quoted from Mr. Godson. While agreeing with Mr. Godson that a freehold or fee-simple title, if coupled with obligatory continuous work, may have the same practical effect as a lease, it seems to be the experience of the most active and

The North Chicago Rolling-Mill Co., of Chicago, have four furnaces at South Chicago, built during 1881. Each furnace is 20 feet diameter of bosh, and 75 feet total height, the hearth being 11 feet diameter, and the top 15 feet 4 inches. They are blown through seven 7-inch tuyeres placed 5 feet 6 inches above the hearth level. Cubical contents, 15,000 cubic feet. Each furnace is supplied with 2 blowing engines, 84-inch blowing cylinder, and 36-inch steam cylinder, and 54-inch stroke. These two have one jet-condenser worked by an auxiliary pump. The blast for each furnace is heated by the aid of three Whitwell fire-brick stoves, each 21 feet diameter and 60 feet high. In the batteries of boilers furnishing steam for four furnaces there are 36 double-length boilers, 76 feet long, 48 inches diameter and 16,000 square feet heating-surface. The plant was designed to produce 3600 tons per week, or 900 tons for each furnace, and was fitted as above with such engines, boilers, and hot-blast stoves as were thought requisite for that production ; hence, calculated from the present make—not the least remarkable feature is the economy of construction—there are less engines, less boilers, and less hot-blast power for the iron made than at ally plant within my knowledge, or it could to-day be duplicated for less money per ton of iron made per week than could any plant now in existence, whether using fire-brick or cast-iron stoves for heating the blast. This is a practical demonstration of my assertion in a paper on fire-brick stoves, read before the Institute," that the application of fire-brick stoves in construction really lessens the first cost. In view of the statements just made, I must be most emphatic in assuring the members that nothing is strained or overburdened.

Changes in the rate of heating had only negligible effects on the degree of' calcination as characterized by mean crystallite thickness and the chemical properties of the calcined coke. The physical structure of the cake was however significantly affected when rate of heating during calcination exceeded 50°C per min over the temperature range of 600° to 900°C. Surface-accessible porosily increased with the .rate of temperature rise, and this was accompanied by a change in pore size distribution. Source and properties of the green coke also had an influence on the structure of the calcined coke. The evidence presented suggests a similar mechanism of porosity development in petroleuiiz coke during calcination in industvial equiplnenl, such as rotary kilns. An increase in surface accessible povosity incveased the pitch binder requirement when the coke was used as aggregate in Soderberg paste. A correlation was established between calcined coke porosity and paste binder requiremenl. ManY results have been published on the changes of properties of petroleum coke during calcination, such as chemical composition, real density, electrical resistivity, crystallite and pore structure. The correlation of these properties with temperature of calcination and time at maximum temperature has been rather well established in both laboratory and pilot plant experiments. Surprisingly little attention has been given however to the effect of calcination conditions, such as rate of temperature rise or furnace atmosphere, on the chemical and structural properties of the calcined coke. It has been observed that petroleum coke, when calcined in industrial equipment, acquires higher porosity and lower real density than those attainable in laboratory furnaces at apparently identical calcina- tion temperature and soaking time. This paper describes a study of the effect of rate of heating during calcination on calcined coke properties using green petroleum cokes of different volatile matter, hydrogen, and sulfur content. An attempt was made to correlate the changes in coke structure with the flowability of anode paste of the type normally used in aluminum reduction cells. EXPERIMENTAL Petroleum Cokes Used. In the study of release of volatile matter and sulfur during calcination and the effect of rate of heating on calcined coke properties two delayed cokes of different sulfur contents were used. The results of analysis of the green cokes are given in Table I. In the study of the effect of flash calcination thirty-six commercial petroleum cokes from twelve different refineries were used with a range of properties shown in Table 11. Calcination Conditions. Calcination experiments were carried out in a laboratory induction furnace. In each run a 200-g sample of dry green coke sized to 10 by 65 Tyler mesh was calcined in a graphite crucible. The crucible containing the sample was placed in the middle of a stack of eight others filled with metallurgical coke to reduce temperature gradients within the sample. Temperature was measured by two Pt, Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouples and controlled by a Celectray instrument. The two couples generally agreed within 5°C. In the study of volatile matter and sulfur release the samples were heated to temperatures in the range of 500" to 1500°C at a rate of 10°C per min in a nitrogen atmosphere and held at the final temperatures for 30 min. In the study of the effect of heating rate on calcined coke properties the desired rates between 10' and 300°C per min were obtained by manually adjusting the power input. Flash calcination was carried out by dropping 100 g of the green coke into the graphite dish preheated to the calcination temperature. Because of the small heat capacity of the furnace the coke was introduced in 20-g portions at a time. For this purpose a 2-in.-long nipple between two 1-in. gate valves installed on the top flange of the furnace served to provide a gas seal while feeding coke to the furnace. It was estimated that the temperature of the coke reached that of the furnace at a rate of approximately 1000°C per min. Holding time at final temperature was also 30 min. Calcined Coke Proper- Determined. Porosity was determined on 20 by 35 Tyler mesh samples using an Aminco-Winslow mercury pressure porosimeter with an operating range of 1.8 to 3000 psi absolute pressure (100 to 0.05 p pore diameter range).' A. J. Shaler—I should like to congratulate the authors on the presentation of this paper, which we have been awaiting a long time. The view they have taken of the sintering process, namely that voids are comparable to particles of a second phase capable of dissolving to a slight extent in the metal phase, is an interesting but dangerous one. Pines has given a first-order solution of the problem and Has predicted a decrease in the concentration of pores near the surface. The authors of the present paper have experimentally demonstrated the second-order effects, that is, the diffusion of the space phase between voids of different sizes, and also the movement of atoms from highly curved parts of a void to less curved regions of the same void. I have recently calculated the rate of vapor-phase transport within odd-shaped pores in copper at 850 °C and found that probably at that temperature volume flow is the more rapid shape-changing mechanism. The authors of the present paper have found that at 1000°C, vapor-phase transport is dominant. There is no disagreement here, I think. The dominant phenomenon can easily be different in different temperature ranges and with different pore shapes: I used a cylinder going to a sphere, not a tricuspid going to a "triple cuspidor." But there is some danger in the other art of the explanation, that is, in the study of the diffusion of vacancies from a pore to its neighbors and to the outside. A vacancy is very different in dimension from an atom. When it moves, it carries a field of elastic strain. This has to be taken into account. A concentration gradient of vacancies can cause them to diffuse. But in the absence of such a gradient, they can be made to diffuse by a field of stress. What happens in some of our experiments, and it is most noticeable in the shrinkage of synthetic cylindrical pores, like the tubes we have been working with, may be broken down into the following steps. (1) The presence of a surface establishes a vacancy concentration gradient, as Dr. Kuczynski and the present authors have shown. (2) Vacancies then diffuse in order to decrease this gradient. (3) In so doing, they cause an elastic field to be built up in such a direction as to oppose the diffusion, so that it slows down until it reaches a steady-state rate. (4) The steady-state flow is due to the fact that the surface tension acting on curved surfaces applies a stress to the system which itself mechanically causes vacancy diffusion. What I have said is that the diffusive types of flow of the authors and of Dr. Kuczynski are transient phenomena which soon stop if the pores are large. We are then left with a mechanical problem only, and our researches have not yet disclosed just what the mechanism of flow is; it may be a slip process, or it may take place by a vacancy diffusion of the type Nabarro has de-

The behavior of the reverse-combustion process in a linear adiabatic system is theoretically investigated by means of an idealized physical model. T his model is described by a pair of non-linear equations involving heat and mass transfer which are coupled by a concentration-dependent reaction-rate function of the Ar-rhenius type. The differential equations governing the quasi steady-state temperature and concentration distributions are approximately solved by using either physical or mathematical simplifications. It is shown that the reverse -combustion process can be mechanistically described by simple physical models whose behavior equations can be solved formally. It is further demonstrated that the derived reverse-combustion equations can be solved numerically within the error limits for the experimental data. The theoretically predicted peak temperature-flux-velocity relationship exhibits reasonable agreement with experimental data obtained from Athabasca tar sand. The principal contribution of this work lies in its usefulness as a starting point for developing a more comprehensive theory. A description of the vaporization-coking process must be obtained; then, the theory must be extended to three dimensions to include geometrical effects and heat losses. INTRODUCTION In another paper,'" he physical processes visualized as occurring during reverse combustion have been described. In this paper, the extent to which an elementary theory can account for experimental observations is determined. Theoretical results that can be used to estimate some of the behavior characteristics of importance to this process are also presented. Since it is not possible to include all the features of the combustion mechanism of which we are currently aware, the mathematical formulation refers to the highly idealized system developed herein. This simplified physical model is based on the simultaneous transfer of mass and heat accompanied by a chemical reaction: it is described mathematically by a pair of coupled, nonlinear differential equations. Similar sets of equations have been studied extensively in the field of flame propagation; an excellent review of these investigations has been published by Evans.1 FORMULATION OF THE PROBLEM It will be recalled that the experiments are performed with a thin-walled cylindrical tube that is uniformly packed with sand and oil. The system is maintained substantially adiabatic by means of heat supplied externally in such a way that the radial temperature gradient in any plane normal to the axis of the tube approaches zero. Initially, the tube is at ambient temperature, except at one end where it is rapidly heated to a predetermined temperature. When the prescribed temperature is achieved, air is caused to flow into the cold end of the tube. As the oxygen in the air stream contacts the hot oil, a localized exothermic reaction takes place. The generated heat is conducted and convected away from the reaction zone so that definite temperature and concentration profiles are rapidly established and move uniformly in a direction opposite to that of the air flow (Fig. 1). As a consequence of this mode of oxidation, all of the oxygen in the air is consumed; then, the remaining nitrogen and the gaseous combustion products sweep out all vaporized hydrocarbons and leave an immobile hydrocarbon-coke on the sand.

This paper describes the Bureau of Mines-El Paso Mining and Milling Company cooperative research program at the Emerald Isle mine3 near Kingman, Ariz. This research program was directed toward developing in situ leaching methods for 200,000 tons of ore exposed in the pit bottom and also 1,500,000 tons of ore under 200 feet of overburden adjacent to the pit. A test area in the pit bottom containing 15,000 tons of ore was blasted and leached. The results of this leach test were encouraging, and the entire pit bottom was leached in-place for about 7 months. Two test blasts under 200 feet of overburden and extending to 290 feet were detonated in an area near the open pit. The results of these blasts were evaluated by core drilling and permeability measurements. An in situ leaching system was designed, but not implemented, to recover copper from the 1,500,000-ton area near the pit. The company decided to terminate operations at the Emerald Isle mine in November 1975.

Having been appointed, on February 19th, 1890, a member of the Commission created by the Legislature of Pennsylvania for the purpose of investigating the " Waste of Coal Mining, with the View to the Utilizing of the Waste" (waste in this case referring specially to the small sizes of anthracite heretofore thrown away), my attention was naturally directed to the mash economical method of burning these small sizes.* Although I had been Familiar with the burning of anthracite for • many years, I found when I came to study the matter carefully that I was far from thoroughly understanding it, particularly with reference to the hurning of the smaller sizes, and that the literature of the subject, which was not very extensive, had more of a tendency to confuse than to enlighten me. I began therefore to investigate the subject so as to arrive if possible at some definite principles applicable to the question. With the aid of my assistant, Mr. John R. Wagner, I began at Drifton a series of experiments upon the burning of small anthracites. We first erected a small furnace with a grate 3 feet long and 2 feet wide, with which we experimented about two months. From the information thus acquired, we designed and built another furnace of about the same size, which gave us facilities for extending our investigations still further. After experimenting several months with the second furnace, we built a third one, which was much larger, having a grate area of about 68 square feet, which was exactly the size of the grate used in the boiler-plants of' Coxe Bros. &

The State of Pennsylvania produces approximately 60 per cent of the total production of Pennsylvania Grade oil, and naturally represents the dominant factor in the area producing that grade. The producing area comprises the states of New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and a small part of Ohio. The importance of this area is too commonly neglected because it produces only 2 per cent of the total amount of crude produced in the United States. It is, of course, unimportant in its percentage of total crude production, but extremely important for its production of lubricating oil. The lubricating fraction from a barrel of Penllsylvania Grade crude oil represents about 22 per cent of the total, whereas the lubricating fraction from the total United States production represents only about 2.5 per cent of the crude oil. The Pennsylvania Grade area produces about 6,000,000 bbl. of lubricants, which is 15 to 20 per cent of the total produced in the United States. All Pennsylvania Grade lubricants are classified as "high-grade," and with a production of 15 to 20 per cent of the total lubricants, it appears probable that the Pennsylvania Grade area accounts for 25 to 50 per cent of the high-grade lubricants produccd in the United States. Production Bradford Field The production figures quoted in Table I apply only to the part of the Bradford held that lies wholly within the state of Pennsylvania; approximately 15 per cent of the Bradford field is in Cattaraugus County, New York, and 10 per cent of the production is obtained from that sector. The Bradford-field production in 1941 was 12,729,900 bbl. as compared with a production in the year 1940 of 12,748,279 bbl., or a reduction of 18,379 bbl. The year 1941 represents the fourth successive year in which production in the Bradford field has declined. All of the production from the Bradford field is obtained by water-flooding methods and increases or decreases in production are due more to economic factors than to any physical limitations of the pool, inasmuch as additional drilling of water-intake and producing wells would increase the total production of the field. It is apparent that increased drilling of oil and water-intake wells does not take place except under stimulps of a favorable price; and while oil prices during 1941 were moderately favorable, they were not sufficient to prevent a mild decline. Too many wells were drilled in the Bradford field in 1937, but this was compensated by subnormal drilling activities in 1938 and 1939 and a large increase in 1940, The increase in 1941 over 1940 was about 7 per cent. The effect of new drilling is becoming less pronounced on a per well basis because more properties yielding less per acre are being drilled than were drilled in former years.
