Masjid-i-Su1aiman.—There have been no new developments in the Masjid-i-Sulaiman field during the year. Drilling, deepcning and acidizing operations for maintenance of production havc continued normally. Reservoir conditions have been unchanged, the rate of fall of dome prcssure remaining very low—at about 0.4 lb. per sq. in. per million tons net production. Drilling on the Lali structure northwest of Masjid-i-Sulaiman has continued but oil has not been encountered in commercial quantities. Haft Kel.—The progressive drilling program extending the production capacity of the Haft Kel field was completed carly in the year and the field is now on a routine maintenance basis. Drilling has continued on the white-oil springs structurc northwest of Haft Kel. Naft-i-Shah.—No developments of interest have occurred in Naft-i-Shah field. Offtake is for local markets only. A further large produeer was completed during the year. Gach Saran.—By the end of 1939, work on plant and pipe lines to put, the field on a production basis was approaching completion. Two substantial producers were also drilled in the initial production area. Pazanun and Agha Jari.—No further drilling was carried out on the Pazanun structure during the year, gas only having been obtained to depths exceeding 8000 ft. On the adjacent Agha Jari structure, however, a second satisfactory oil producer was completed.

The iron ores of southeastern Cuba present a subject of exceptional geological interest. Their relations to the inclosing rocks are varied and in some cases unusual. The problem of their geological origin is not a simple one and for this reason has occasioned some divergence of views among previous observers. Profiting, however, by these earlier studies and by more detailed field and laboratory observations as well as by the experience of added years of mining, much more satisfactory descriptions and interpretations can now be prepared. Active development was undertaken by the Juragua Iron Co., Ltd., a corporation affiliated with the Bethlehem Steel Co., and the Pennsylvania Steel Co. The property of the Juragua company, which is situated about 15 miles east of Santiago, was studied in June and July, 1884, by Dr. James P. Kimball, at the time Professor of Economic Geology in Lehigh University and one of the best known of American mining geologists. Dr. Kimball published on his return two papers, the first important descriptions which we have of the local geology.1 It is

Since its development about forty years ago by J. V. N. Dorr (Cyanidation and Concentration of Gold and Silver Ores, McGraw Hill Book Co., 1936, 1-5), and others, continuous countercurrent decantation has not only become one of the standard methods for extracting gold and silver from their ores, but has also found wide application in other metallurgical and chemical industries. In 1917 L. B. Eames published an excellent paper (Countercurrent Decantation, Trans AIME, 1917, 57, 143- 158), in which he determined the effects of grade of ore, ratio of solution precipitated to ore treated, variations in the density of the thickener spigot discharge and variations in the value of the barren solution upon the gold assay of the solutions discharged from the thickeners in the system. Eames showed that, other things being equal, the dissolved gold lost in the tailing varies directly as the value of the ore and as the value of the barren solution. The tailing loss de- creases rapidly as the ratio of solution precipitated to ore treated is increased to about three or four to one. Beyond this point the improvement is negligible.

The laws of Kick and Rittinger are explained as functions of particle size with metal cutting theory. Comminution is shown to be basically the same process as metal grinding. The machine shop type of grinding operation is used to study mineral crushing. Evidence indicates that plastic flow occurs in comminution. THE laws of comminution of Kick and Rittinger have been debated for many years. Certain data obtained from ball mill and drop tests are found to be in approximate agreement with Rittinger's law while other data would seem to support Kick's law. In all these tests the energy required to produce a wide variety of particle sizes has been studied. Surface area has also been measured with considerable difficulty, at first because it was thought that the energy associated with crushing was that required to create new surface, later because of precedent and because a more fundamental variable was unknown. Tests made with the machine shop type of grinding process show that normally brittle materials that are usually crushed can behave like the more ductile metals. Brittleness is then a relative prop- erty largely dependent on specimen size and stress state. The machine grinding operation offers a convenient means for studying the comminution of materials in which the important size variable retains its identity. The energy required to grind a certain volume of material is shown to be strongly dependent on size. Kick's law is found to hold very well for particles below 1 micron in size, while Rittinger's law holds approximately in the comminution of larger particles. While a physical origin of Kick's law is established in terms of the theoretical strength of materials having a perfect lattice structure, there is found to be no physical basis for Rittinger's law. Because of its industrial importance, comminution has commanded considerable technical attention and has been the subject of continuous study for nearly a century. A number of empirical rules have been proposed to make it possible for grinding energies to be predicted. Of these so-called laws of comminution those bearing the names of Kick and Rittinger have been most widely applied and debated.

CERTAIN alloys1 that, as a result of quenching, are retained in the form of homogeneous solid solution are known to increase in hardness and strength on standing at room temperature or on heating at slightly elevated temperatures. Other alloys" that, on rapid cooling, are held in the form of homogeneous solid solution (as, for example, certain steels) behave in like manner on heating to somewhat higher temperatures. The observed increase in the hardness and strength of these alloys, referred to as "aging" or as "secondary hardness," is widely accepted as being occasioned, either in whole or in part, by the precipitation in submicroscopic form of such constituents as were held in supersaturated solid solution as a result of cooling in excess of a certain critical rate. In earlier discussions of the cause of age hardening or secondary hardness, the question of the hardness of the precipitated particles does not appear to have been raised. At present, however, the general opinion appears to be that age hardening and secondary hardness are occasioned by the precipitation of hard particles within the supersaturated solid substance.3 The authors may be wrong in their belief that the last is a prevailing opinion. The Ebliden Company, originally entering the field of mining with the workings of the gold-copper-arsenic deposit at Ebliden, commenced zinc benificiation at Kristineberg in 1940 and lead mining at Laisvall in 1943. During the three last decades a number of mines has been developed for production, Today the Mining Division of BOLIDEN produces ore from 22 mines, operates 7 ore dressing plants and produces: [ ] Over two thirds of the lead contents are treated in the lead smelter of the company at Ri6nnskarsverken. The other part of it is sold abroad. The zinc content of the lead concentrates is recovered from the lead smelter at Ri6nnskarsverken. The zinc concentrates are shipped abroad to European smelters in Norway and Germany. Today BOLIDEN has its plants in the northern and the middle parts of Sweden. Figure 1. Straight lead ore, lead-zinc ores, lead-zinc-copper bearing ores and complex lead-zinc-copper and pyrite ores are treated in local and central plants with a capacity of 8.600 tpd. BOLIDEN also operates the low grade copper ore at Aitik at 7.000 tpd.

The research work presented in this paper had initially a two-fold goal. First, further data concerning the low-temperature recovery of cold work was desired. Recovery phenomena have been extensively studied in face-centered-cubic metals but at the time of initiation of this research, no investigation concerning the low-temperature recovery in body-centered-cubic metals had been made. During the course of the investigation a paper by Martin on the recovery of point defects in molybdenum appeared.&apos; Comparison of our results on tungsten with Martin&apos;s results on molybdenum will be made. Secondly, knowledge concerning the influence of a particular type of impurity addition on the recovery kinetics was desired. It has been known for a long time that extremely small amounts of certain impurity additions exert a profound influence on the recrystallization behavior and the resulting microstructure of tungsten. Small amounts of potassium silicate and aluminum chloride added prior to the reduction of tungsten oxide to the metal have been found by Smithells to raise the recrystallization temperature markedly,2 and yield an ultimate microstructure in which grains several millimeters long are produced in fine wires of say 10 mil diam. If the impurities are added singly, ordinary secondary recrystallization results with none of the spectacular properties of the wire to which special additions were made. Swalin and Geisler3 and Rieck4 have studied the recrystallization behavior of such doped wire in some detail. The former workers found that small amounts of these impurities raised the recrystallization temperature over 400°C and electron microscopic examination revealed no obvious inclusions in the microstructures. In fact. chemical analysis showed that there was <0.001 pct K, <0.002 pct Al, trace of Si, and <0.0003 pct 0 in the wire studied. The possibility that the role of the special impurities is to keep the structure open by void formation and that submicroscopic porosity acts as the inhibiting agent has been discussed.2&apos;3 Meijering and Rieck5 have suggested that the impurities are strung out as second-phase particles in a direction parallel to the drawing direction. It was thought that a kinetic study of recovery could perhaps elucidate the role of the impurities to some extent. When a metal is deformed by cold work three basic types of defects are thought to be introduced into the crystal lattice, namely, interstitials, vacancies, and dislocations. Van Bueren6 has proposed that recovery of cold-worked metal is a four-stage process, each step being the result of the annealing of a primary defect or a combination of defects and having a unique activation energy. The steps in order of increasing activation energy are attributed to a) the diffusion of interstitials recombining with vacancies, b) diffusion of vacancy pairs, c) the diffusion of single vacancies, and d) climb of dislocations. In metals with relatively low- or medium-range melting points the temperatures for recovery are low enough so that the first three steps may occur during room-temperature deformation. For tungsten, because of the high melting point and subsequently high recovery temperature, it was calculated, using Nowick&apos;s approach7 that this recovery would occur in the temperature range 200" to 600°C. It is also known that recovery of X-ray line broadening, presumably due to dislocation climb, occurs at about 600°C.8 EXPERIMENTAL METHOD Two types of cold-rolled 10-mil-diam tungsten wire were used in the investigation; a) pure tungsten, (called undoped) and b) G. MIXED emotions were produced by the announcement that the buildup of weapons will be stretched out till mid-1954 instead of the previous 1953 deadline. Reason: government assistance programs will be tougher to get but there will be easement in materials allocations. Earlier in February, DPA had announced that tightening up on regulations governing rapid tax -amortization would become effective March 1. In the future, DPA will have to certify amortization contracts for all construction and permanent installations costing more than $100,000. This action was necessary according to DPA&apos;s James F. King, so that new industrial expansions already approved could be assessed in the light of the changing critical mineral picture. When DMPA inherited the backlog of government assistance, requests from DMA, it moved in fast. The results of DMPA&apos;s work is described in the article on p. 351 by James K. Richardson; The speed with which these requests were approved and the lengthening of the military program have made a reappraisal of the critical mineral list necessary. It looks as though the consumer industries will be getting more metal soon and, led by steel, there is an industry push toward the abandonment of CMP. Relaxing of materials controls appears imminent but discontinuing CMP is in the "let&apos;s talk this thing over" stage.

The little town of San Nicolás, Tamaulipas, Mexico, lies approximately 60 miles east of Linares, situated in the State of Nuevo Leon, and 150 miles SE. of Monterey, as shown in the sketch-map, Fig. 1. The place is reached from Monterey by the Tampico train as far as Linares, a distance of 92 miles, and then by coach the rest of the way. It is situated in a narrow valley between low hills, the houses forming one main street and a plaza. It is peopled by about 500 inhabitants. The climate is temperate, the thermometer ranging from 90" in summer to a few degrees below freezing-point in winter; but this severe weather only lasts a day or two at a time, when the " northers " blow. There are no streams in the vicinity, but water sufficient for the use of the people is obtained from wells. The rainfall is about the same as that in the rest of NE. Mexico. The rainy months are July, August, and September. The rest of the year is practically dry, with an occasional showery day or two during the winter, when a " norther " is blowing. Timber is abundant in many localities. There are two varieties of oak, besides mesquite, ebony, "maguira," "patol," and a number of other kinds of trees indigenous to this region. I. History. On the discovery of the silver-lead bearing veins occurring in this district, the mining-camp of San Nicolás was founded in 1767 by the Spaniards, and numerous mines were opened and worked for a distance of about 3 miles east and 5 miles west of the town. AN increase in the value of magnetostriction1 * is known to result from the annealing of some ferromagnetic alloys in a magnetic field. Similar increases may be anticipated in the value of the magnetostriction of alloys that are of interest because of their normal high values. Two were selected for trial, 87 pct Fe-13 pct Al(Fe,Al) and 69 pct Co-31 pct Fe, the latter being used as a representative of the Co-Fe alloy series. The influence of a magnetic field present during annealing is explained by the domain theory of magnetism." The field orients the domain vectors in its own direction when the alloy is at or below the Curie temperature, and holds them there until the metal is cold. During cooling the interaction stresses between neighboring grains are largely relaxed. Interaction stresses will reappear, however, if the state of magnetization of the specimen is changed in any way, and will be larger the more the new state of magnetization differs from the one existing during the magnetic anneal. In this connection the 180" reversal of a magnetization vector is not considered a change because a simple reversal does not tend to produce a change in shape of a magnetized region. When the field existing during the anneal is removed after the metal is cold, the domain vectors can turn back only to the nearest crystallographic directions of easy magnetization because return to random

The traditional financial objective for a single mine company has been to operate as frugally as possible and to pay out most of the earnings as dividends. If the business is cyclical (as it is for most metals) the dividends might fluctuate quite widely. When the mine is exhausted the company disappears. This is still quite a viable strategy for a single mine company. It is not however a viable strategy for the world as a whole. The mining industry is built by mine development companies who can mobilize the people and capital to bring new mines into production. Their skills must include marketing, engineering, finance and other politics. It is very rare for a property to be brought in without the support of a major company that can provide all these services. The exceptions will usually have some other form of big brother support, for example the U.S. government uranium contracts at guaranteed generous prices. The mine development company will seek as a minimum to perpetuate itself by developing new mines in order to replace those which are running out. The more common and more ambitious objective is to grow -- that is to add to its ore reserves and current production by developing more new mines. The financial objectives for that company are very different. Obviously if all the earnings were paid out in dividends there would be nothing left to work with. The first financial policy then is to spend an appropriate amount on exploration for new properties. The next is to retain enough of the earnings to provide the capital for new projects at least sufficient for the equity. There is no magic formula as to what proportion of earnings should properly be distributed as dividends by a growth-oriented mine development company. As a rough rule of thumb distributing half or more will probably leave too little to work on and 30% or so is probably a good balance. However the circumstances differ widely from company to company. It may be useful to set an objective for the rate of growth of a company&apos;s earnings. Some have picked rates such as 15% per annum compounded. Others have set a target in real terms which might appear as 10 or 11% plus inflation. Obviously the arithmetic of compound interest is very attractive; however in practice there is much variation. Indeed current returns from existing operations swing widely with the business cycle and there is no assurance that economic new properties will be found according to someone&apos;s arbitrary time schedule. For example, Western Mining Corporation Limited in Australia explored for 30 years with little to show for it, but then found the great Australian nickel deposits and more recently the huge Roxby Downs copper. That long dry spell could not have fitted anyone&apos;s arbitrary calendar of growth and yet they would not have found such orebodies without that long period of effort. Should they have abandoned the search? Once a new property has been found or acquired there has to be a threshold rate of return on the new capital to be invested against which to evaluate the property&apos;s economics. Conventionally this seems to be 15% after tax, a number common in other heavy industries as well. In some cases it is expressed as a lower number plus allowance for inflation. Discounted cash flow analysis is a very useful tool but it does not make the decision. In the end a "go" decision depends on judgment of many factors some of which are numbers used in the DCF calculation whose credibility must be examined. It is curious how frequently investment proposals come in with the rates of return very close to 15%. The project advocates know that a number much less than 15% will not fly and that a number much more is not necessary. With much higher nominal and real interest rates of recent years, even though before tax, logic suggests that the hurdle rate should also rise. The power of compound interest is so great that 20% is very hard to achieve in any cash flow projection but 18% may be a sensible yard - stick. Once again it is remarkable how many project proposals come in with an 18% return. On the record the mining industry as a whole has not been overly restrictive in choosing its hurdle rates of return. This is shown by the abundance of metals in recent years and the failure of metal prices to keep up with inflation. All of the foregoing is standard text book stuff.

SCHLESINGER,* Denver, Colo.-Two problems are of great interest to the radium manufacturer at the present tine: The first is to perfect a process, more efficient and more economical, which is capable of treating a greater variety of ores. . Practically all the radium now manufactured in the United States is extracted from carnotite ores and these vary a great deal according to their location. The amount of sulfates contained in the ore is of particular importance, and any straight acid-leaching method, such as developed by the Bureau of Mines, becomes prohibitive when the ore contains more than 0.5 per cent. of sulfates, as the sulfates go into solution and naturally precipitate the radium as insoluble radium sulfate. Since the amount of ore obtained from any one claim is usually comparatively small, it is necessary to work a number of claims in different localities, and a process, in order to be commercially satisfactory, should handle all of these ores. In other words, it would be entirely unprofitable for radium manufacturers to employ any process which cannot treat any but sulfate-free ores. He must deal with carnotite containing appreciable amounts of sulfates, and must be able to work this in with the other ores. Carbonaceous ores from certain sections in Utah; which are known to contain as pinch as 1.0 per cent. and more of volatile matters, are prone to a, nitric acid-leaching process. The second problem relates to the treatment of concentrates. There is no doubt that a very large amount of low-grade ore, containing less than 0.75 per cent. uranium oxide, is available. It has been demonstrated that these ores can be concentrated, but there is still room for research

REFRACTORY clay, one of Pennsylvania&apos;s important nonmetallic mineral resources, occurs at several horizons in beds of Pennsylvanian age. The Mercer fireclay, of Pottsville age (Table 1), is the most important of these clays. A study of this fireclay has been conducted by the Pennsylvania Geologic Survey discontinuously over a period of seven years. The work has included field mapping of a rather large area, as well as petrographic, differen¬tial thermal, and X-ray studies of the fireclay. A comprehensive report on the project is now in preparation.

IN the Parkes process of extracting precious metals from lead, zinc is added to the molten lead containing gold, silver, copper, and, some antimony. These metals, with the exception of antimony, form an alloy with the zinc by reason of their greater affinity for it than for the lead, and this alloy, being lighter than lead, rises to the top, carrying the precious metals with it, whence it can be removed by skimming. These skimmings are further treated for the separation of the zinc therefrom, and the recovery of the precious metals, the zinc being driven off by heat and again used for another operation. In addition to the zinc that combines with the silver, etc., a certain amount is necessary to saturate the lead, and it is therefore necessary to treat the desilverized lead to free it from this residual zinc. To do this it is heated again in a reverberatory furnace and air or steam is blown through it. This oxidizes the zinc together with a small amount of lead and antimony, leaving the lead free from zinc and antimony, and forming oxides of these metals, which rise to the. top and are skimmed off. This process relates to the separation of the metals in these oxides or skimmings. The skimmings are cooled, crushed, and mixed with carbonate of soda and pulverized oil coke. The mixture is heated in a reverberatory furnace on a bath of lead, to about 1,000°C. The metals are reduced by the coke, the lead and antimony go into the lead bath, while the zinc is volatilized and burned to oxide. This impure oxide is at the present time treated at Omaha by the Hall process of electrical precipitation, making a very pure metallic zinc. It can also be very easily refined by the old Schnabel process of using ammonia and carbon dioxide as a solvent. It seen-is to be in an ideal form for this purpose, and very few changes from the original method are required to obtain the zinc oxide practically C. P., leaving the lead and antimony as residues.

Certain choices for the shear elements of the inhomogeneous distortion in the phenomenological theory of martensite formation are examined for their agreement with crystallographic and X-ray data of iron alloys. The assumption that the shear elements must represent slip or twinning systems characteristic of bcc metals is found to covey all observations, even when a small uniform dilatation is taken into consideration. In bct martensite, (011) becomes a possible twinning or faulting plane, in addition to {112), and qualitatively similar X-ray line broadening is to be expected from both. The basic concept inherent in the current theoriesl-4 of the formation of martensite is that the interface between the parent (austenitic) and product (martensitic) phase is an invariant strain plane (i.e., one that is undistorted and unrotated). Experimental evidence that the interface is of such a nature is available in certain transformations2&apos;5&apos;6 but for the transformation in iron alloys direct observation has not proved enlightening. Internal strains resulting from the formation of the small martensite platelets within the parent austenite matrix7 make it difficult to produce the desired evidence. Indirect evidence, however, such as the continuity of scratches in passing from untrans-formed to a transformed region, strongly indicates that the habit plane in iron alloys is an invariant strain interface. The scatter in habit planes in a given specimen8 would suggest that internal stresses have a slight but definite influence. On the other hand, composition changes which affect the lattice parameter can alter the habit plane appreciably, and by an amount greater than the scatter.&apos; The success of the theories depends on the choice made for the "inhomogeneous distortion" or "complementary shear&apos;&apos; in the analysis and also on the choice for the parameter 6 representing a small uniform dilatation. In the approach developed by Wechsler, Lieberman, and Read&apos;," it is implicitly assumed that 6 is unity. In the case of iron alloys, all observations cannot be explained without varying either the inhomogeneous distortion or 6 . Bowles and Mackenzie3 considered only the effect of varying d. They found it difficult to reconcile the wide scatter of habit planes with the theory and were forced to the conclusion that it may also be necessary to consider variations or different choices of the inhomogeneous distortion. Wechsler and Read" considered a limited number of possible choices for the inhomogeneous distortion, but no variation in 6, though this could easily have been introduced if so desired. One manifestation of anelastic properties in solids is the mechanical elastic aftereffect, which may be described briefly as follows: If a stress is applied to a solid body, a deformation or strain is produced. On removal of the stress, this deformation disappears, at least in part. As a first approximation, this appearance or disappearance of deformation usually has been considered instantaneous. Actually, however, for a very wide variety of substances, on application of stress the instantaneous deformation is followed by a further slow yielding, which continues, although at a rapidly diminishing rate, for as long as the stress is applied. Similarly, on removal of the stress, the instantaneous recovery from deformation is followed by a further slow recovery, which continues, although at a rapidly diminishing rate, often for a long time. This latter phenomenon has been called the "elastic after-effect." Experiments upon the elastic after-effect in metals, when properly designed and when properly interpreted, are capable of giving quite precise information regarding the relation between stress and strain in the various constituent parts of the metal. For example, if certain parts of the metal, such as grain boundaries or slip bands, behave in a viscous manner—that is, if therein—the relaxation spectrum will contain lines or bands associated with the relaxation of shear stress within these parts. No attempts have heretofore been made to utilize elastic after-effects for obtaining such detailed information. The purpose of the present paper is to explore the possibilities of properly designed and interpreted experiments on the elastic aftereffect in metals. Since new procedures and principles are employed in this study, an attempt has been made to record each step taken. Elastic after-effect observations are susceptible of simple interpretation only when the stress level employed is so low that all effects are linear with the stress. Just how low the stress level must be can he determined only by experiment. An advnntage, other than simple interpretation, is associated with low stress levels. One manifestation of anelastic properties in solids is the mechanical elastic aftereffect, which may be described briefly as follows: If a stress is applied to a solid body, a deformation or strain is produced. On removal of the stress, this deformation disappears, at least in part. As a first approximation, this appearance or disappearance of deformation usually has been considered instantaneous. Actually, however, for a very wide variety of substances, on application of stress the instantaneous deformation is followed by a further slow yielding, which continues, although at a rapidly diminishing rate, for as long as the stress is applied. Similarly, on removal of the stress, the instantaneous recovery from deformation is followed by a further slow recovery, which continues, although at a rapidly diminishing rate, often for a long time. This latter phenomenon has been called the "elastic after-effect." Experiments upon the elastic after-effect in metals, when properly designed and when properly interpreted, are capable of giving quite precise information regarding the relation between stress and strain in the various constituent parts of the metal. For example, if certain parts of the metal, such as grain boundaries or slip bands, behave in a viscous manner—that is, if therein—the relaxation spectrum will contain lines or bands associated with the relaxation of shear stress within these parts. No attempts have heretofore been made to utilize elastic after-effects for obtaining such detailed information. The purpose of the present paper is to explore the possibilities of properly designed and interpreted experiments on the elastic aftereffect in metals. Since new procedures and principles are employed in this study, an attempt has been made to record each step taken. Elastic after-effect observations are susceptible of simple interpretation only when the stress level employed is so low that all effects are linear with the stress. Just how low the stress level must be can he determined only by experiment. An advnntage, other than simple interpretation, is associated with low stress levels. (written discussion *).-The writer&apos;s conclusions with reference to the possibility of finding commercial deposits of petroleum in Brazil were published in 1908 in the Final Report of the Coal Commission of Brazil.1 Since this volume is not generally accessible, and the author has nothing to acid thereto, the following quotation found on pages 243-7 may prove of interest: The Possibility of Petroleum Deposits in Brazil "The writer has often been asked to express an opinion as to the possibility of finding petroleum in commercial quantity in Brazil. "The question is one that does not admit of an adequate answer except for the regions visited by the writer, which as already stated, include only, a portion of that great territory, and only the southern portion of Brazil; namely, the states of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catharina, Paraná, and a few rapid excursions across São Paulo, and Minas Geraes, as well as the brief visit to Marahú in Bahia. "That the sedimentary beds of the Brazilian Permian once held some petroleum is attested by the evidence of the Iraty black shale which gives off the characteristic odor of this substance from São Paulo to Rio Grande do Sul.
