THIS paper describes the results of a series of tests carried out to determine the partition of dodecylamine between distilled water and the surface of quartz at various concentrations of dodecylamine acetate in solution. An adsorption-column technique was utilized for this purpose. Ralston and Harwood, of Armour and Co., had synthesized marked dodecylamine acetate for us.' In their preparation which we employed, 0.0007 pct of the total carbon was the radioactive isotope, carbon fourteen. Unmarked dodecylamine acetate of high purity was also prepared by them for our use. The presence of carbon fourteen in the dodecylamine enabled us to analyze quantitatively for dodecylamine on the surface of quartz, using a radioactive-tracer technique. The method used was that known as internal gas counting of carbon dioxide, formed by oxidation of the amine. This method has already been described, "3 ' and the reader is referred to these papers for details of the analytical method and procedures. and surrounding liquor, a technique analogous to chromatographic columns was utilized. The experimental setup is shown in fig. 1. The dodecylamine-acetate solution was made up in a volumetric flask and poured into the glass funnel shown. It was allowed to drip slowly onto the quartz bed, the rate of flow from the funnel reser- voir being controlled by a hose clamp. The quartz column was contained in a small, fritted-glass filter (size 20 mm, C). The beaded top edge of the filter was cut off to enable the holder and contents to fit into the open end of the 30/45 joint on the combustion tube. This combustion tube is used in the analytical train described in a previous paper.' A piece of gum-rubber tubing joins the bottom of the fritted-glass filter to a filter flask, which in turn is connected to a vacuum line, or water aspirator. THE wire saw is a tool not less than 60 years old, probably nearer 100 years old. It was developed in Europe and is reputed to have originated in Belgium. Frombold is said to be the original patentee. [ ] Wire sawing equipment, as indicated in Fig. I, is very simple. It consists of a three-strand wire cable, usually 3/16 or 1/4 in. in diameter, or a single flat ribbon of medium hard, tough, alloy steel twisted into a helix of those diameters, made to form an endless belt of any length up to several thousand feet. The wire is guided into the cut by sheaves mounted in slides on steel columns situated close to either end of the cut. The feed motion usually is controlled either by gravity or by hand-operated feed screws. The steel columns or "standards" range from 15 to 30 ft. in length. At the top is a swiveled arm supporting a sheave similar to the traveling sheave below. Immediately under the swivel-mounted sheave is a guy plate or collar with shackles attaching four chain or wire-rope guys with suitable tightening devices, or with two guys and two jack legs for supporting the standard vertically or at any desired angle. The usual drive is by a 10-hp. motor through a gear reducer, on which are mounted two grooved sheaves, one of which is keyed and the other free running on the shaft. As a continuation of the earlier paper on the general subject of the SP log, a more complete analysis of certain features of the SP log in shaly sands is given. The pseudo-static SP in front of shaly sands is compared, on a theoretical basis, to the static SP in front of clean sands, as a function of the respective amount of shale and sand in the formation, and of the relative resistivities of the shale, of the uncontaminated part of the sand. and of the invaded zone of the sand. As a conclusion, the advantage of using reasonably conduc. tive mud in this case is shown. The discussion is illustrated by field examples. INTRODUCTION The discussion reported in the present paper is based on a theoretical analysis, and not on experiment. The field examples, joined to the text. are shown only as qualitative illustrations of the essential results of this analysis. Although the hypotheses made in the theoretical developments may perhaps be somewhat improved, it seems, nevertheless, that the results obtained account reasonably well for the actual phenomena, and give a fair approximation of their order of magnitude. The paper contains a mathematical analysis of a tri-dimen-sional distribution of potentials and current lines. due to spontaneous electromotive forces arising at the contact of shales and free electrolytes. as a function of the geometry and of the respective resistivities of the different media involved. It is assumed, although this hypothesis is not proven, that the emf's remain the same even if the shale occurs in very thin layers or in dispersed particles. It has already been pointed out 1,2,3 that, all other conditions being the same, the deflection of the SP log in front of a shaly sand is smaller than opposite a clean sand. When the thickness and the conductivity of a clean sand are large enough. the deflection of the SP log reaches a limiting value which is equal to the "static SP" of the clean sand. It is generally convenient to take the static SP of shale as the reference value or "base line." As a consequence, and for the sake of abbreviation, the expression. "static SP of a clean sand," is often used to designate the difference between the static SP of that sand and that of the shales, which difference is a measure of the total electromotive forces involved in the chain mud sand-shale. A similar limiting value is; also observed for the SP deflec-lion opposite a thick shaly sand, but it is smaller. just as if the total electromotive force involved were smaller in that case. This limiting value has been called the "Pseudo-Static SP" of the shaly sand. The static SP of a clean sand depends on the salinity of its connate water with respect to that of the mud, and, to a certain extent. on the differential pressure which controls the electro-filtration potentials, but it does not depend on the resistivity of the sand. On the contrary. the pseudo-static SP of a shaly sand depends not only on the salinity of its connate water and on the differential pressure, but also on the percentage of shale and on the resistivities of the shale, of the uncontaminated part of the sand, and of the zone invaded by the mud filtrate. If the three resistivities above were equal, the pseudo-static SP would be proportional to the percentage of sand in the shaly sand, and its departure from the static SP of a clean sand having the same connate water would simply be proportional to the percentage of shale. In that case, the pseudo-static SP of a shaly sand containing 10 per cent of shale would he 10 per cent less than the static SP of a clean sand. When. however. the sand is. on the average. substantially more resistive than the shale. the percentage of departure of the pseudo-static SP from the static SP of a clean sand is much larger than the percentage of shale. For that reason, the peaks of the SP log opposite shaly sands are systematically of smaller amplitude when the sands are oil-bearing than when they are water-bearing, all other conditions being the same. This feature is observed even when the sand beds are thick. and even when they do not contain a large percentage of shale. All this has already been described in all earlier publication", but mostly in a qualitative way. The present paper will analyze in more detail the action of the local SP currents which are generated inside of the shaly sands, and which are responsible for the abnormally low value of the pseudo-static SP. The quantitative computations have been extended to the general case of thin interbedded layers of sand and shale, where the resistivities of the shale and sand streaks do not have the same value: they are summarized in charts giving values of the pseudo-static SP of a shaly sand as a function of the different parameters involved. DEFINITIONS The static SP of a clean sand has been defined as the potential that would exist in the mud opposite that sand, were the SP current prevented from flowing. Such an ideal condition is represented on Fig. I-A. By analogy, the pseudo-static SP of a shaly sand can be defined as the potential that would exist in the hole, if the circuit shaly sand — surrounding shales — mud column were interrupted by the insulating plugs placed at the boundaries

During the last decade no topic has created more interest or received more thought among blast-furnace men than coke. One reason for this is, undoubtedly, the remarkable increase in the use of byproduct coke. Formerly our coke was made at a distance from the furnaces and by a distinct organization. There was little cooperation or development possible under these conditions. Today the situation is greatly changed. Much of our coke is made by the organization operating the furnaces and the coke oven is operated with the primary object of obtaining the best results in the blast furnace. The effect of changing the method of coke manufacture, even in some minor detail, is often felt almost immediately at the blast furnace. There naturally results one of the most valuable assets of the byproduct coke oven, i.e., the possibility of increased blast-furnace efficiency due to close observance and correct operation of the ovens. The results are evident, but often it is difficult correctly to account for them. In attacking the solution of a problem of as much importance as why one coke is better than another, there are facts which should be kept clearly in mind. The author hopes, in this paper, to bring out some points relative to the use of carbon in the blast furnace which will be of value in solving this question. GeÜner's Ideal Working Years ago GrÜner made a statement regarding the use of carbon in the blast furnace, which has been very generally accepted by metallurgical and blast-furnace men. I quote this theory as given by Prof. Richards on p. 248 of Metallurgical Calculations: "From the standpoint of the generation of the maximum quantity of heat in the furnace, GrÜner was right in formulating his dietum of the ideal working of a blast furnace, vie.: All the carbon burnt in the furnaee should be first oxidized at the tuyères to CO and all reduction of oxides above the tuyères should be caused by CO, which thus beeomes Co2."

IN 1922 Morey made a series of experiments in which he observed the cooling of a molten system containing H20, 9.1 per cent; K20, 17.3 per cent and Si02, 73.6 per cent. This system was confined in a bomb; it was fluid at 500° C. and exerted no vapor pressure. In cooling to 420° C. a large part of it crystallized and at that temperature much of the water had separated from the crystals and remained as steam, which built up a pressure of 4998 lb. per sq. in., a force sufficient to lift nearly one mile of granite.1 If granite, cooling at 600°, expels vapor in the process of crystalliza-tion it is reasonable to suppose that a considerably greater vapor pressure would result, and it is thought that the vapor expelled from crystallizing granitic batholiths probably has a pressure sufficient to lift two or three miles of granite. This vapor, collecting near the tops of cupolas of batholiths, is believed to exert sufficient pressure to fracture the hoods and roofs of batholiths above the cupolas. If that is true, one would expect to find that the fracture systems above cupolas are arranged in patterns that depend in part on the shapes of the cupolas. The mechanics of the situation seem to require that conical cupolas should have radial fracture patterns, that bluntly rounded cupolas should have fracture systems that are either irregular or rudely conjugated in plan, and that elongated stocks or cupolas should have fracture systems in which the fractures lie nearly parallel to the direction of the elongation of the cupolas.

(Presented at the Washington meeting, May 3, 1905, and simultaneously sent to the Iron and Steel Institute, for presentation at the meeting of that Society in London, May 11, 1906.) It is to be regretted that the data respecting the use of dry-air blast, which were presented to the Iron and Steel Institute at its meeting in the United States, in October, 1904, should have been restricted to the period from August 25th to September 9th inclusive, and from September 17th to 30th inclusive. In order to present the paper at all it was found necessary to limit the record of operations to the period above stated. It appears from the reported discussion that some of those who took part felt themselves to be at a disadvantage, in considering the economies secured through the use of dry-air blast, by reason of the fact that the data presented covered so short a period. It is the purpose of this communication to present in detail the record of operations of the Isabella Furnaces from November, 1904, to March, 1905, inclusive, as shown by the furnace-records. The month of October, 1904, is not included, as the furnace using dry-air blast was stopped several times for repairs; and while the record was a very good one considering these interruptions, yet it was not a continuous one. The record for Furnace No. 1 using dry-air blast, and the comparison with Furnace No. 3 using natural air for the month of November, 1904, is set forth in Table I. By a reference to my former paper it will be noted that the month of November is the beginning in this country of the winter period, when the atmosphere decreases rapidly in humidity. The month of October being the transition month in the autumn and April in the spring, and furnaces using natu-ral air approach more closely, from November on, to the conditions obtained by the use of dry-air blast. WHEN dealing with a new reagent, one is concerned with three principal factors: available supply, cost, and results. The atmosphere contains an inexhaustible supply of oxygen mechanically mixed with nitrogen (omitting rare gases and minor impurities) in the proportions of one volume of oxygen to four volumes of nitrogen. (All figures are based on slide-rule precision and minor impurities are neglected.) Expressed in terms of weight, 1 ton of oxygen represents a volume of 22,500 cu. ft. and is contained in a volume of 112,000 cu. ft. of air. Water, also an inexhaustible supply, is a chemical compound containing 89 per cent. oxygen and, 11 per cent. hydrogen. Of the hundreds of schemes proposed for the enriching of air or separation of oxygen, nothing of value has yet appeared. From the standpoint of mechanical separation, liquefaction followed by rectification is the only process that has been developed to a really commercial stage. Theoretically, it should be a .simple matter to separate the mechanical mixture of nitrogen and oxygen; but fractionation can be performed only by converting to the liquid phase and this phase can be obtained only at lower than critical temperatures. The problem, therefore, is not so simple and the cost of the actual operation bears no relationship to the theoretical simplicity of the process. The largest single unit of the required apparatus so far placed in commercial use will handle only 60,000 cu. ft. of air per hour through a compressor which operates at a little over 250 lb. per sq. in. After this apparatus has operated continuously for 14 to 18 days it must be shut down for 6 to 8 hr. to be thawed out, have accumulated impurities removed and again cooled down for production. The cost of such a unit erected in batteries, with necessary spares for maintaining production, and including prime movers, hoisting and all auxiliary equipment, will be about $125,000. To produce one ton of oxygen per hour requires two operating machines of this size; and if the production is to be absolutely continuous a spare unit must be provided. To operate a plant of two units requires 10 or 11 men, excluding boiler attendants, if steam is generated in the plant.

Fluid pressure within the pore space of shales can be determined by using data obtained from both acoustic and resistivity logs. The method involves establishing relationships between the common logarithm of shale transit time or shale resistivity and depth for hydrostatic-pres-sure formations. On a plot of transit time vs depth, a linear relationship is generally observed, whereas on a plot of resistivity vs depth, a nonlinear trend exists. Divergence of observed transit time or resistivity values from those obtained from established normal compaction trends rinder hydrostatic pressure conditions is a measure of the pore fluid pressure in the shale and, thus, in adjacent isolated permeable formations. This relationship has been empirically established with actual pressure measurements in adjacent permeable formations. The use of these data and this method permits the interpretation of fluid pres.rure from acoustic and resistivity measurements with an accuracy of approximately 0.04 psilft, or about 400 psi at 10,000 ft. The standard deviation for the resistivity method is 0.022 psi/ft, and for the acoustic method 0.020 psi/ft. Knowledge of the first occurrence of overpressures, and of the precise pressure-depth relationship in a geologic province, enab1es improvements in drilling techniques, casing progroms, completion methods and reservoir evalzmtions. INTRODUCTION CENKRAL STATEMENT Operators engaged in the search for and production of hydrocarbon reserves in Tertiary basins are more and more frequently confronted with complications associated with over pressured (abnormally high fluid pressure) formations. This is particularly true in the Texas-Louisiana Gulf Coast area. The problems associated with these formations are of direct concern to the combined activities of all phases of operations, i.e., geophysical, drilling, geological and petroleum engineering.' - Knowledge of the pressure distribution of a given area of operations would greatly reduce the magnitude of many of these complexities and in some cases would completely eliminate specific problems. his pape; presents techniques developed for estimating formation pressures from interpretations of acoustic and electric log data. Specifically: the acoustical and electrical properties of shales, reflected by conventional acoustic and electrical surveys, can be used to infer certain reservoir properties, such as formation pressure, at any level in a well. It has been possible to develop these techniques because of a firm understanding of the basic principles that govern and apply to such overpressured provinces. NORMAL PRESSUKES Normal pressures refer to formation pressures which are approximately equal to the hydrostatic head of a column of water of equal depth. If the formations were opened to the atmosphere, a column of water from the ground surface to the subsurface formation depth would balance the formation pressure. On the Gulf Coast, the shallow, predominantly sand formations contain fluids which are under hydrostatic pressure. These formations are said to be normally pressured or to have a normal pressure gradient.* Experience has shown that the normal pressure gradient on the Gulf Coast is approximately 0.465 psi/ft of depth. OVERPRESSURES Formations with pressures higher than hydrostatic are encountered at varying depths in many areas. These formations are referred to as being abnormally pressured, abnormally high pressured, or overpressured. Formation pressures up to twice the hydrostatic pressure have been observed. These formations require extreme care and much expense to drill and to exploit. COMPACTION-FLUID PRESSURE RELATIONS THEORY The generation of overpressured formations in Tertiary sections of the Gulf Coast and several other Tertiary sedimentary basins is, in general terms, considered to be primarily the result of compaction phenomena.' This portion of the paper presents a brief review of the theory which associates compaction and fluid pressure relations, and should thus provide the necessary background for an understanding of the techniques presented. See Hubbert and Rubey' for a more comprehensive treatment of this subject. The theory of the consolidation of a water-saturated clay' has been well established by workers in soil mechanics. The concept is explained by a model with perforated metal plates separated by metal springs and water and enclosed in a cylindrical tube. Fig. 1 is a schematic representation of such a model (see Ref. 5, Fig. 27, page 74). The springs simulate communication between clay particles, and the plates simulate the clay particles. Mano-

(written discussion).-The experience of users of pulverized fuel in metallurgical work, particularly for open-hearth furnaces, has demonstrated that high ash and sulfur in pulverized fuel are a detriment, the sulfur in the coal entering into the finished product; hence, in this class of work it is extremely important, when pulverized coal is to be used, that the coal be selected with care, and only those having low percentages of sulfur be used, in combination with proper means for combustion. I have found that no general statement can be made as to the cost of pulverized coal, each installation being an individual engineering problem and necessitating a varying capital expenditure; as each installation has its own power cost, the actual cost of pulverizing varies between wide margins. It has been found that no general rule can he laid down as to either fineness or dryness; for some uses a wide range is permissible in both factors, while some classes of fuel require different treatment from others. Anthracite, coke breeze, and lignite ash will, under certain conditions, form slag, the melting point of the ash from fuel of this character being practically the same as of that from bituminous coal; furnace temperatures above the melting point of ash must therefore cause the formation of slag. However, it should he noted that furnace temperatures attainable with this class of fuel are not usually so high as those from bituminous coal, which probably explains the statement that the former do not slag. In a well designed furnace, temperatures above 2250° F. (1235° C.) will be obtained with that class of fuel, and slags will be formed. Too much attention apparently has been centered on high CO2 contents of stack gases. A high percentage of C02 is frequently obtained at the expense of the brickwork, the furnace temperature being increased by diminishing the excess air; a high percentage of C02 thus simply means a small proportion of 02.

Knowledge of the initial state of stress in rocks provides a key to the solution of many problems in rock mechanics. The initial state of stress is part of the basic data required for rational design of structures in rock, since its redistribution when engineering activities are conducted is a primary load on the rock portion of the engineering system. Knowledge of initial and subsequent changes in the state of stress is also relevant in the study of active faults and crustal strain. The purposes of stress measurements are not generally well served by methods which disclose only one of the stress components at a point. Recently, interest has centered on overcoring methods which though ex- pensive and difficult have the important advantage of yielding data on three or more stress components. In a previous paper, the authors introduced a new method-termed borehole deepening-based on measurement of the deformations that occur close to the bottom of a borehole when it is deepened by further drilling without overcoring.l The proposed method is at a disadvantage when compared with over- coring procedures in that the quantities to be measured are somewhat smaller and the measuring environment is more hostile. However, the borehole deepening method presents three distinct advantages in comparison with overcoring procedures: (1) Using the same borehole, both the initial and the subsequent changes in the state of stress can be obtained by borehole deepening. THE composition and quality of finished steel depend upon selection and proportioning of the raw materials of the charge as well as upon control of furnace practice. This chapter deals only with the raw materials of the basic open-hearth process that are important in determining the composition of the steel or slay. They are the metallic charge, oxygen-bearing materials, fluxes, alloying and deoxidizing additions, and certain refractory materials used for maintenance of bottoms. Other refractories, which may affect the slag composition, are discussed in Chapter 3. Wide variations are possible in the type and composition of charged materials but certain limiting relations among the elements of the charge must be observed. Since the process consists essentially of refining by the oxidation of undesired elements, a balance must be established between the sources of oxygen and the elements in the charge that are subject to oxidation (see Chapters 2 and 7). For example, if it is desired to use a high ratio of blast-furnace hot metal to scrap, it is necessary to add an oxygen-bearing material such as ore or mill scale to eliminate the excess carbon and silicon that are present in the hot metal. An example of the opposite extreme is the use of a metallic charge composed entirely of steel scrap. With this type of charge, it is common practice to substitute burnt lime for limestone as a flux and to charge some carbonaceous material such as coke to avoid an excess of oxygen in relation to the elements of the charge that are subject to oxidation. Elements such as copper and nickel, which are not oxidized or eliminated by any other reaction, may be introduced into the charge only to the extent to which they are permissible in the finished steel. An example of adjustment of the charge for elements of this type is found in the use of steel scrap high in copper. In this case, metallic components of the charge other than the scrap should be low in copper, or a sufficiently high ratio, of pig iron to scrap should be charged to dilute the copper from the

There is a difference of opinion among engineers on the subject of depreciation in general, and still more on its application to any given case The committee which was appointed by the American Society of Civil Engineers to make a report on Valuation of Public Utilities, states "There is no subject connected with valuation about which there are more diverse views than those relating to depreciation;" and in the discussion which took place upon the presentation of the preliminary report of this committee in January, 1914, that part of the report dealing with depreciation called forth more discussion than any other. From this discussion it was evident that the word "depreciation" was not always used in the same sense, so it is quite important that some definition be adopted. As this paper relates to the proper method of treating depreciation by corporations or individuals operating oil properties, both of which must make a return of annual net income to the government in connection with the income tax, it will be in order to adopt the definition of the Internal Revenue Bureau. Under date of Mar. 29, 1910, the Commissioner of Internal Revenue of the Treasury Department stated "Deduction on account of depreciation of property must be based on lifetime of property, its cost, value and use." Again, on Form 1035, "Return of Annual Net Income" for miscellaneous corporations (Section 2, Act of Congress approved Oct. 3, 1913), a deduction from gross income is allowed for "Total amount of depreciation for the year." This item is defined more particularly as follows: "The amount claimed under Item No. 5 (b) for depreciation should be such an amount as measures the loss which the corporation actually sustains during the year in the value of buildings, machinery, and such other property as is subject to depreciation on account of wear and tear, exhaustion, or obsolescence. The amount taken credit for on this account in order to be allowable should be so entered on the books as to constitute a liability against the assets of the corporation. The amount claimed under this item should not cover losses in the value of stocks and bonds. Decrease in the book value of securities owned, so far as such decrease represents a decline in the actual value of such securities, should be deducted under item 5 (a) of the return. Discussion of the paper of R. E. SOMERS, presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 101, May, 1915, pp. 957 to 996. A. C. LAWSON, Berkeley, Cal.-One point to which Mr. Graton (in summarizing the paper for us) called attention is that the author had not explained why some copper was fixed in the zone of oxidation. I recollect very well puzzling over that question at Ely, Nev., some years ago. Mr. Sales, in his paper on Butte,1 suggests the explanation. It is clue according to him to the paucity of pyrite in the primary ore. Where there is abundant pyrite sufficient sulphuric acid is formed by oxidation to take all the copper into solution and carry it to lower levels; but where the pyrite is scant so that insufficient sulphuric acid is formed, some of the copper is carbonated and so fixed in the gossan. The hypothesis, or some modification of it, as for example the combination of the sulphuric acid with lime, would appear to explain satisfactorily the fixation of the copper in the gossan as carbonate. I have, however, had no occasion in recent years to study the phenomenon. L. C. GRATON, Cambridge, Mass.-As I remember, the rocks in which the chrysocolla occurs in the Burro Mountains are both silicified and kaolinized. It seems probable that in surroundings deficient in carbon dioxide, complete oxidation of chalcocite may yield chrysocolla up to a maximum of half the copper in the chalcocite; while in rocks, like garnet contact zones and certain easily decomposable porphyries, surface decomposition appears often to yield silica in the necessary form to convert the copper of primary sulphides into chrysocolla immediately and directly upon oxidation.

THE incandescent gas mantle is of considerable interest from the standpoint of temperature measurement because it presents a series of apparent contradictions to the established laws of radiation on which are based some of our best methods of temperature determination. One of these contradictions is that the mantle of least brightness (of the commercial thoria-ceria group) is the one having the highest temperature; this, though explicable without any violation of radiation laws, was long a stumbling block to the understanding of the performance of the mantle. Another anomaly is that the energy radiated by the mantle decreases with the rise of temperature, thus apparently invalidating total radiation methods of pyrometry, based on the fourth-power law. The discussion of methods of measuring mantle temperature which follows, is largely taken from an extensive study of the physics of the Welsbach mantle. 1 The incandescent gas mantle consists of a skeleton of refractory oxide of very light weight and open structure, formed by the ignition of a cotton or silk "stocking" previously thoroughly impregnated with salts of certain rare earths. The mantle of commerce is a mixture of approximately 99 parts of thorium oxide with 1 part of cerium oxide. This mixture, discovered largely by accident, gives luminous radiation many times greater than that from either of the constituents taken alone. It is customary to speak of the thoria as the "base" and the ceria as the "colorant," and the commercial mantle represents one of a family in which an oxide of low emissive power is employed as a base, which will assume a high temperature, while a small amount of some other oxide of high visible emissive power is added, which will reduce the temperature of the mantle but little. This is, in general, the most efficient- way, from the standpoint of visible emission, to utilize a substance of high emissive power in the visible spectrum. But it is not necessary. that two substances should be employed to produce a radiator

The structure of aluminum films obtained by evaporation was studied by electron microscopy, mostly by replica techniques and X-ray diffraction. The resistivities and stress conditions of the films were also determined. Film properties were studied as a function of source selection, substrate type, residual pressures of oxygen and water vapor, substrate temperature, and rate of growth. The formation of abnormal localized growths and whiskers resulting from annealing treatment subsequent to deposition was investigated. Films deposited onto single-crystal substrates were found to be epitaxially 0riented; for such films, relative orientations between films and substrates were determined. ALTHOUGH wide use has been made of evaporated aluminum films for the formation of conducting lines on semiconductor devices, relatively little has been reported concerning the structural characteristics of such films.1"9 The purpose of this study was to obtain an overall view of the dependence of these characteristics on film deposition and subsequent annealing conditions, which were similar to those used in silicon planar technology. Accordingly, most of this study was carried out using oxidized and bare silicon wafers as substrates, although some work was also done using alkali halide, magnesium oxide, and mica substrates. However, the main concern remained pragmatic. Emphasis was given to the study of the effects of deposition and annealing conditions on film characteristics such as structure, resistivity, and stress. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The films which were investigated in this study were deposited in 18-in.-diam glass chambers which were connected to the usual type of trapped diffusion pumps filled with silicon oil. Through the use of liquid-nitrogen-cooled Meisner traps and titanium sublimation pumps placed inside the deposition chambers, the pressure could be lowered to the lower portion of the 10- I Torr range and little increase in pressure would occur during the deposition cycle. Unless described otherwise, the substrates were 1-in.-diam p-type silicon wafers having a resistivity of 10 ohm-cm. The wafers were oxidized in wet oxygen at 975°C followed by a short dry-oxygen exposure at the same tempertture to a total oxide thickness of approximately 6000A. The wafers, backed by a layer of gallium, were mounted onto molybdenum discs brazed to a copper block.10 The latter was heated by imbedded commercial cartridge heaters. The substrate temperature could be maintained to within +10°C of a prescribed temperature during film deposition. This paper gives a brief description of an investigation made several years ago on the diffusion of zinc into copper. The material for that study was furnished in the form of thin copper strips coated with zinc. The result was required rather quickly and at not too great an expense, and especially information was desired as to the rate at which zinc would diffuse from the zinc coating into the copper and the temperature at which the operation should be carried out. A study of the requirements of this problem indicated that the solution might be secured by means of six determinations. This is the smallest number that will give the information desired and, at the same time, furnish checks on the accuracy of the determinations which justify an abbreviated experimental program. This does not count a preliminary test which was designed to give some idea of the correct temperature to use. The minimum number of temperatures that can be used is two. Knowing the rates of diffusion of zinc into copper at two properly chosen temperatures, it is possible to calculate the rate for any other temperature, and also to check the accuracy of the determination by means of the heat of diffusion, which is calculated from the effect of temperature on the rate of diffusion. The minimum number of determinations at any one temperature is three. The amount of diffusion which occurs at a fixed temperature is definitely related to the time of diffusion, so that by determining the amount of diffusion for three different time intervals, this relationship may be established and possibly a check on the accuracy may be secured. This accounts for the six determinations or experiments, and suggests the logical plan of the work. The check used here is not generally applicable to diffusion phenomena, but it seems to hold closely enough for the limited amount of diffusion in this investigation to justify its use. The samples used were 5 to 6 mils thick and about 1 in. square. CUSHMAN,* Washington, D. C.:-I am very much interested in the subject matter of this paper. I have had occasion to speak to this question before. There has recently been so much written and said and claimed about the effect produced by the addition of small quantities of copper to steel that there is certainly an impression abroad that a new and wonderful cure-all has been discovered. Are we facing a method of alchemy by which, at the expenditure of very little trouble and only a few cents' worth of copper per ton, the well-known characteristics of steel with respect to some features are so marvelously changed as in effect to produce a new metal ? I am a great believer in the future of the iron and steel alloy field. I do not think that with all the advances we have made in metallurgy we have begun to scratch the possibilities of usefulness to mankind in the exploration of the alloy field, and I include in that alloy field even what might be designated as the dilute alloy field; that is to say, where a very small quantity of a metal alloyed with iron and steel confers upon it some new or extraordinary qualities. With respect to many of the physical characteristics of the copper-iron or copper-steel alloys I am not particularly competent to speak. With respect, however, to the investigation of corrosion problems and with respect to claims made with regard to resistance to corrosion, I am competent to speak insofar as I have specialized to some extent in that field and have given up a great deal of my time for a great many years to a study of it. Some years ago, being particularly interested in the study of corrosion problems, I received the very generous permission of a large manufacturing concern to use their large open-hearth furnaces any way I saw fit for exploring this particular field. There is not a metallurgist in this room who will not realize the generosity of a manufacturing company who would permit a man to pursue a theory and give him as his material to work with 60 tons of molten metal.
