Pyritic smelting, so-called, as practiced in the Black Hills is pyritic smelting only in the sense that Dr. John Percy uses the expression in his " Metallurgy of Silver," where he describes a process for smelting dry silver-ores in connection with iron pyrites, to form a regulus. The ores treated by this process in the Black Hills are very siliceous, averaging about 74 per cent. of silica, from 10 to 20 of iron oxide, 4 or 5 of alumina, and from 2 to 4 of lime. In 1889, while Dean of the South Dakota School of Mines, I took up the question of their smelting. There were neither copper- nor lead-ores in the Hills; hence pyrite and pyrrhotite, of which there are large deposits, were employed to form a regulus. This mixture of pyrite and pyrrhotite, besides being absolutely barren of gold and silver, carried an average of 30 per cent. of silica. The only basic material available as a flux for the great excess of silica in the ores and in the pyrite was a dolomitic limestone. Moreover, the local coke gave 24 per cent. of ash, 60 per cent. of which was silica—as unpromising a set of conditions as can well be imagined. We had before us the examples of Mr. W. ADVANCES in the production of quality steel have emphasized the need for greater knowledge of the amount and distribution of oxygen in the steel. Control of inclusion content and quality is largely dependent on such knowledge. While many analytical methods have been de-vised for the accomplishment of this end, few are without serious limita-tions in accuracy, convenience, or skill required in application. Usually at least two methods are necessary to determine total oxygen and constituent oxides. Because of the great importance of this problem and the specific interest in the application of such methods of analysis, the various procedures were carefully reviewed at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories, with the view of developing a method free from the limitations mentioned above. Intensive experimentation finally led to an improved iodine extraction analysis described by Cunningham and Price. I After this had been thoroughly checked from the standpoint of the analytical chemist, it was rechecked from that of the metallurgist. This involved preparation of a number of small heats of varying composition with determination of total oxygen in the molten metal by the alumina method2 and an analysis of the solidified material without the aluminum addition by means of iodine extraction; the oxides of iron, manganese, silicon and aluminum also being determined by the iodine analysis. The report of this work constitutes the subject of this paper.

From the viewpoint of practical economic engineering the main value in studies of demand and supply lies in the information they give concerning the next movement of price. The title of this discussion is too comprehensive for detailed analysis and it will, therefore, be narrowed to the question of price measurement. The oil operator is interested primarily in net profits. Prices, costs and production determine them. Production is here used in its broadest sense. It includes refining and marketing. It is an operating problem. Prices and costs are economic considerations. Though costs are an important element of prices and profits, the subject is too large to be treated in a brief paper of this sort. In the long run, costs govern prices, but for the purpose of gaging prices in the immediate future the relationship of current demand and supply are more significant. Operating, expansion, retrenchment, sales and storage policies of oil companies are largely influenced by the feeling of executives concerning this relationship. The stockholders of companies whose executives are wrong may suffer. Investors who err in their judgment may likewise lose. On the other hand, oil companies and investors who appraise these factors correctly and move accordingly will profit. It is an important subject worthy of careful consideration. The author has been asked to discuss the subject for 1928. From the beginning of the year until the first of June, as illustrated by Fig. 1, over-supply prevailed in the face of restricted production, but from June to September, with record consumption, demand slightly exceeded supply and oil came out of storage in the United States as a whole. One of the main problems of the oil man is to decide whether this condition will continue and what the next movement of prices will be. Before he can do so he must have an understanding of the underlying conditions and of the facts that led to the present situation. With these facts in mind he is in a position to measure the effect of the present relationship of demand and supply on price and is afforded a perspective that may enable him to look ahead for a short period of time. Under the name given to this column, I almost feel obliged to write about some aspect of grinding, but I have decided instead to comment on the future of chemical processing. In recent years, I have seen a tremendous interest in extractive metallurgy develop among undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Utah. For example, of the 12 graduating seniors this year, over half seem to prefer extractive metallurgy to physical metallurgy. In particular, they seem to be most interested in hydrometallurgy, or chemical processing, obtaining industrial exposure to the phenomena they study via part-time employment at the Kennecott Research Center and the USBM Metallurgical Center in Salt Lake City. The stimulus has been generated by society itself. Many students are dedicated to the proposition that new technology can circumvent the destruction of our environment, a concept which provides considerable motivation. At the governmental level, the recent concern for the quality of our environment has created action in the area of chemical processing both through imposition of stringent air and water quality standards, and through increased funding for technological research in this area. The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) gave impetus to this movement when it pointed up the need for development and support of such disciplines as extractive metallurgy, particularly chemical processing, in a recent report on Mineral Science and Technology. The recommendations in the NAS report have prompted governmental action on many fronts, including the Bureau of Mines, and have also given rise to direct legislation in the form of two bills -H. R. 3492 and S. 635- presently before Congress to a mineral engineering education. The report recommends that chemical processing technology (more generally extractive metallurgy) be developed by both new engineering techniques and unconventional chemical techniques such as application of the chemistry of nonaqueous liquids to mineral systems.

THE Coalinga oil field is located on the west side of the San Joaquin Valley, California. The structure is in general a monocline, the edges of the oil horizon resting on the foot hills and dipping gently toward the east. One prominent anticline occurs plunging southeast. The earlier drilling was done in the foot hills comparatively near the outcrop and the wells were shallow. The sands were followed eastward and, in the case of the anticline, along the plunge, the wells becoming deeper and deeper until the depth of 4,000 ft. was reached and passed. There is nothing to show that the oil will not be found in quantity at still greater depth. In fact, some of the best producers have tapped the sand at close to 4,000 ft. The recovery of oil still farther to the east, and therefore at greater depth, seems to be mainly a question of drilling. In this territory the formations drilled through are chiefly sands and shales; they will not "stand up" in an open drilling hole; the casing has to be carried close to the bit, and it is always difficult to keep the casing free for any considerable distance. Ability to carry casing of comparatively large diameter without conductor pipes for distances of 2,000 or 3,000 ft. or over is desirable in such territory chiefly for two reasons. It makes it possible to enter the oil sand with a pipe of ample diameter; it eliminates one or more expensive strings of casing which act only as conductors for the water string, and furthermore, in territory where waters are encountered which corrode steel rapidly, it makes possible the construction of a rust- and alkali-resisting water string. It is always desirable to shut off top waters, which may lie within 100 ft. or less of the oil sand, with 10-in. pipe. Where the depth is so great that a practical weight of 10-in. pipe will not withstand the probable collapsing pressures, 8 ¼ in. at least is desirable. About the limit of rotary drilling to date in California seems to be the setting of the 10-in. string at 3,200 ft., although the rapid advance in rotary work during the past year seems to indicate that this depth may soon be increased. It is my purpose now, however, to treat only of cable-tool drilling.

H. R. BIANCO*—I should like to ask Mr. Collins if that statement he made about the addition of drosses to the blast furnace slowing down the blast furnace is a result of his own experience or a result of the experience of some older metallurgists; and perhaps I should ask him to define the type of drosses that he means. A. A. COLLINS (author's reply)— That has been my own personal experience with dross. On various occasions at Chihuahua we attempted to incorporate the dross in our regular blast furnace charge and to shut down the dross re-verberatory to try to save some money. As expected, we had very poor results. I think that Ed Fleming will well remember on one occasion, that was back about 1933, when we attempted the first experiment along this line, and as a result of the sulphur addition to the blast furnace to matte out the copper we ended up with hanging furnaces and mushy slags and abandoned the dross experiment, once again turning to the use of the reverbera-tory for handling dross. H. R. BIANCO—Is that dross you refer to from the drossing kettle ? A. A. COLLINS—Yes, the dross that I am referring to came from drossing kettles. Furthermore, to back up my previous assertion, I had occasion in 1943, while up at Leadville, to once again experience the routing of dross through the blast furnace with its sulphur addition, since they had no dross re-verberatory, and to observe that once thf dross was removed, the furnace was speeded up almost 100 tons a day. All of these are personal experiences and I think that Mr. Feddersen also has had a little experience along this line —in fact, I believe all of us have had some experience. H. R. BIANCO—I know at Trail they recirculate considerable dross through the blast furnaces and we also recirculate dross at Herculaneuin and I am not aware that it has done much towards slowing down the blast furnace. A. A. COLLINS—We have always had very poor results. In the first place you have got to add a sulphur addition to pick up that copper and once you do that, that sulphur is apt to combine with some of the zinc and you are going to form a little mush; before you know it you have furnace hangs and a poor working furnace. Now of course that depends on the amount of zinc you have on charge. But in 1943, Leadville had roughly about 7 pet zinc in their slag and it worked very poorly. Previously when they had 4 or 5 pet zinc in their slag it did not matter. B. L. SACKETT* At Tooele we had a great deal of experience with copper. We have always been able to keep a lead well, however, in spite of the fact we have run as much as 5 pet copper and only 15 pet lead on the charge. But regarding the handling of dross, our dross reverberatory furnace is only 7 or 8 years old. Before that we recirculated the dross through the furnace and thought we were doing a pretty nice job. Of course these things are all more or less relative—in other words you establish a certain condition much better than one of a few years ago and possibly as good as any other of which you know and you think you have pretty good results. When we first took the dross off of the blast furnace and put it through the dross reverberatory furnace we immediately found out that we had gained something very real in furnace speed. Since that time there have been occasions when, because of the dross reverberatory being down, we have had to use dross again through the blast furnace and that has checked our original experience in slowing down the furnace very definitely. So we feel that a dross reverberatory is a very valuable asset at the Tooele Plant. A. A. CENTER*—Mr. Sackett's being here reminds me of trying to run with a minimum of lead concentrates the maximum of dross producing electrolytic zinc plant residue. He came up from International Smelting Co. to help us get started on that. We took an old copper blast furnace at Great Falls, Montana, and made a lead furnace out of it by putting a lead well on the other long side which of course is a very unorthodox lead blast furnace. Our aim was to treat the residue from the electrolytic zinc plant, as I said, with a minimum of lead concentrates. That meant a maximum amount of dross. At that time selective flotation was not general practice, so our zinc concentrates ran relatively high in copper and other dross-producing elements; and of course these were largely in the zinc plant residue. I think we might call it muscle metallurgy, but we had an interesting, successful experience there and we ran for over a year thanks to Mr. Sackett's helping us get started. I have the details, but time does not permit. We did well enough so that the A. S. and R. Co. at East Helena kept boosting up the offer to us for the electrolytic zinc plant residue and there was not enough lead concentrate to supply two lead smelters there in Montana, so the matter finally finished up by the A. S. and R. Co. taking all of the residue under long term contracts.

The kinetics of alloying- in W-5 rot pct Re powder compacts were investigated at temperature about the upper limit for the formation of the x phase, such that a single intermediate phase was involved in the process. The rates and directions of motion of the a-o and o-b interface were assessed as functions of tinze at the sintering teri7peraticve by quantitative izetallog-ralhic techtziques. WHEN binary or more complex alloys are produced by sintering compacted blends of elemental powders, a complication is encountered which does not arise in the sintering of pure metals. In addition to concern for grain size and densification, the rate of inter diffusion of the component elements must be considered. The general problem of alloying during sintering has been treated by numerous investigators.'-7 These investigations have been concerned only with systems that form continuous series of solid solutions and a concentric-sphere diffusion model4 provides a useful description of homogenization in these stems.' Some controversy remains, however, over the contribution of surface and grain boundary diffusion to the homogenization process. Heckel% ePorts that homogenization can be described by volume diffusion at all temperatures, whereas other invetiators'' recognize the importance of surface and grain boundary diffusion, particularly at lower temperatures. Analysis of the homogenization process in partially miscible systems is complicated by the motion of the interfaces separating the individual phases. A simple analytical solution does not exist for such finite systems with spherical symmetry. It was the purpose of this work to examine the kinetics of the formation and dissolution of an intermediate phase in a binary system through an assessment of the motion of the interfaces separating this phase from the terminal solid solutions. PROCEDURE The W-Re system is an example of a partially miscible binary system and was selected for study because of its current importance in refractory-metal technology. The equilibrium phase diagram, Fig. 1, shows that the o phase will be formed by interdiffu-sion between tungsten and rhenium. At temperatures between approximately 2125" and 282O°C, the o phase will appear as the only intermediate phase in the diffusion system. In this work, a mixture of elemental powders containing 5 pct Re was employed. In such a mixture, the rhenium particles will be distributed randomly in a tungsten matrix. During sintering, a o-phase layer will form at the W-Re interface. The development and subsequent disappearance of the o phase are controlled by the relative rates and directions of motion of the 0-0 and a-p interfaces. The motion of these interfaces can be inferred from quantitative metallographic measurements of the average radii of the o shells surrounding rhenium particles. Elemental tungsten and rhenium powders of commercial purity were employed in these investigations. THE present paper is concerned with typical temperature values experienced in lamp-filament measurements as made on regular factory and engineering products. It deals with the relations existing between temperature, efficiency, lamp size, and life of incandescent lamps, insofar as they affect the rating of the product and its use by the individual consumer. The temperatures measured lie in that range covered only by the general method of radiation pyrometry, as opposed to direct methods used under contact conditions. The range of temperatures ordinarily experienced extends from about 2125° K., for the now almost extinct carbon-filament lamp, to 3200° K. for the comparatively new tungsten-filament motion-picture lamp. Most of the more common sizes of tungsten lamps have temperatures ranging from 2500 to 3000° K. Because of the high temperatures involved and the relatively small area of the sources used, we are practically restricted to two methods of measurement, both of which depend on the light radiated front the filament. The first and more usual method is that of the Morse pyrometer, dependent on the variation in temperature of the amount of light of a given color range yielded by the filament. In this case, the measured temperature is that of a small part of the incandescent body, that is, the part which is focused on the comparison filament. The second method, known usually in this country as that of "color match" and in England as "color-identity" is based on the color of the total light yielded by the filament, the comparison being facilitated by the use of an ordinary photometer- head. A more definite idea of the temperatures involved in the case of filaments of various vacuum and gas-filled lamps, is given by Fig. 1. The size of the lamp, in watts, is plotted along the horizontal axis and the temperature of the filament is plotted along the vertical axis. The lamps concerned are regular product, rated for 1000 hr. life. The temperature values for the old 16-candlepower carbon lamp and the new motion-picture lamp are shown by the cross and circle respectively.

RECENTLY, much interest has been generated in materials that undergo martensitic phase transformations on straining.')' While it is undoubtedly true that a large amount of ductility can be obtained at rather high strength levels, the question of the general way in which the phase transformation affects the plane strai fracture toughness, as measured by the parameter KIC, has yet to be answered. Let us consider a material that contains a sharp crack as shown in Fig. 1, and is subjected to a tensile stress 00. It is known that the presence of a crack tends to multiply the stress in the area of the crack according to the following equations:3

This paper presents results of analysis of the effect of fracturing on initial flow rates and on ultimate recoveries from low capacity oil formations. This analysis shows that even in formations of permeability as low as 0.1 md, large fracture treatments can yield oil recoveries and production rates approaching those of high permeability formations. Field production information is shown which supports the analytical work. INTRODUCTION Often hydrocarbon bearing formations are discovered which, while they are known to contain large quantities of oil, will not produce at commercially attractive rates without special well stimulation. Attempts to solve this problem led to the development of such techniques as underreaming, shooting, acidizing, and recently hydraulic fracturing. These methods of stimulation have been highly successful in many fields. All of these treatments, however, affect only the pay section near the well bore and therefore owe their success to circumventing and overcoming local permeability reduction about the well bore. It has been the belief that in treating wells to stimulate production in which there is no permeability reduction near the well, the maximum possible production rate increase would be of the order of two or fourfold. Hence, it has been concluded that fracture treatment of uniformly low capacity (permeability times thickness) formations could meet with but limited success. It is the purpose of this paper to show that the use of fracture treatments much larger than usually used can yield commercially attractive producing rates and high recoveries even in formations of permeability less than 0.1 of a md. PROCEDURE In order to illustrate the effects of fracturing, an analytical study of some hypothetical systems was made in which one factor at a time was varied to show what is important in recovering oil from fractured wells. It was assumed that a horizontal fracture of relatively high fluid-carrying capacity extended from a well bore. The presence of such a fracture will cause a marked influence on the flow pattern and pressure distribution in the formations, with the net effect being to reduce tremendously the resistance to flow into the well bore. A diagram of the resulting flow pattern and pressure distribution is illustrated in Fig. 1. Immediately after production commences, the principal flow of fluid is vertically from the formation flanking the fracture, into the fracture, and then into the well. After sufficient oil and gas have been produced to lower the pressure in the formation adjacent the fracture, oil and gas will begin to flow in a radial manner into the fracture from the formations beyond the end of the fracture. In calculating the performance under such conditions. the material balance or conservation of matter equation and equations of flow were solved simultaneously by a stepwise method of calculation. Y.:—I think Mr. Bache has put his finger on the chief source of the danger of dust-, or gas-and-dust, explosions in collieries. 1 mean the persistent determination of the miners' unions to increase their weekly wages by the excessive use of explosives. This would not be feasible if coal-miners were paid by the day; but this form of payment is, for many reasons, not economically practicable; and the universal practice is to pay for the winning of coal according to the quantity produced. If the miner, by using a large amount of powder, can throw down a large amount of coal without corresponding labor on his own part in undercutting and drilling, he will receive more money for less work, provided he is paid for everything—merchantable coal, worth-less dust, slate, and " bone "—resulting from such a method. My attention was called to this matter many years ago by an admirable report of Prof. W. B. Potter, a past- President of the Institute, on the conditions obtaining in this respect in the Illinois coal-field. It was made very clear in that report that considerations of danger to workmen or loyalty to employers could not be relied upon to prevent miners from employing this perilous and wasteful method of increasing their own immediate receipts. So far as I know, only three remedies have been attempted, namely: the enforcement of discipline as to the methods of mining; the refusal to pay for dust, etc., produced by the miners'methods; and restriction upon the use of explosives, effected by requiring the miner to purchase them from the employer, at a price so high as to make it unprofitable for him to use them in excess. All of these attempted remedies have encountered the bitter opposition of the miners' unions. The enforcement of discipline has become almost impossible, if discipline be (as it should be) understood to involve punishment for the violation of rules when no disaster has followed. I

The holder of this fellowship receives an income of $1,000 and is expected to carry on an investigation in Economic Geology which will add a distinct contribution to the literature. The institution at which the study is pursued will be decided after conference with the members of the Committee of Awards. The character of the investigation will be decided after applications have been passed upon.

In examination of some cold-rolled copper and cupronickel that contained a little columbium, it was discovered that these alloys were unusually resistant to annealing. This effect was suficiently pronounced to warrant some investigation of the annealing characteristics of such compositions. Experimental Procedure The alloys were made from cathode copper, electrolytic nickel, and a special copper-columbium hardener alloy furnished by the Electro Metallurgical Corporation. This hardener alloy contained 10 per cent columbium, with tantalum, aluminum and iron as major impurities. The melting was carried out in a clay-graphite crucible in a high-frequency induction furnace! under a charcoal or electrode carbon cover. No deoxidizing additions were made. The 7-lb. copper heats were poured into a steel mold, hot-rolled to 1/4-in. thickness, and annealed for 56 hr. at 760°C.; the cupronickels were annealed I hr. at 815°C. The material was then cold-rolled to a 50 per cent reduction in thickness and annealing tests were carried out on this 1/8-in. hard-rolled strip. In a previous paper,' the results of some experimental work on the measurement of slippage in the flow of oil and gas mixtures through vertical pipes were presented. The data obtained were correlated and equations were deduced from which the performance of the experimental gas-lift could be predicted with reasonable accuracy. However, attempts to apply the equations to the calculation of pressure drops in actual flowing wells yielded erroneous results. At the time the results of the experimental work were published, no satisfactory explanation could be offered for the failure of the empirical equations to express properly the performance of wells. However, recent work has led to the development of a new hypothesis which presupposes certain conditions affecting the flow of oil and gas in wells. When the proposed equations are corrected to allow for these conditions, an agreement between the observed and calculated performance of the actual wells is obtained which in most cases is quite satisfactory, although it is subject to certain limitations. In this paper, the method of calculating the pressure drop in actual wells is considered, and the application of the method to the design of tubing is discussed. (For nomenclature used in this discussion, see Table 1.) Factors Affecting Slippage and Efficiency At the outset, a few of the principle factors affecting slippage and efficiency in the gas-lift discussed in the previous paper will be reviewed. In the flow of the mixture of oil and gas in a vertical pipe, slippage is the phenomenon of gas moving upward with a. linear velocity greater than that of the oil. Under steady conditions, if given quantities of oil and gas enter the tubing per unit of time, the same quantities of oil and gas per unit time must, on the average, pass every section of the tubing; otherwise, there would be accumulation or depletion of the oil or gas at some sections, and the flow would be unsteady. A previous publication1§ has described the effect of quenching stresses on the lattice parameter values of high-purity aluminum-copper alloys particularly with reference to the solution and precipitation of CuAl². The effect of cooling stresses in causing plastic defomation or cracking has been considered in relation to the physical properties of the alloy On reheating alloys in the two-phase field, the time required for precipitation to occur has been observed in connection with the degrec of supersaturation, the rate of diffusion of the solute atoms as a function of the comparative atomic radii, degree of strain, temperature of reheating and grain size. A few qualitative comparisons on the relative effect of these factors have been drawn between the aluminum-copper alloys and the aluminum-magnesium alloys. Strain in Solid-solution Alloys A 10 per cent magnesium alloy ill the form of chill-cast bars was furnished by the Aluminum Company of America through the courtesy of L. W. Kempf. Additional alloys were prepared using alllminum (99.95 per cent Al) and high-grade magnesium. The alloys listed in Table 1 were melted in an Acheson graphite crucible under a flux of fused MgCl², CaC12, NaCI. Chill-cast rods were sealed under vacuum in Pyrex glass, homogenized several days at 450' C., air-cooled and machined to rods of from 1/8 to ¾-in. dia. THE formation of ferrite in supersaturated aus-tenite has been the subject of considerable speculation and investigation. Aaronson has recently reviewed the data pertinent to this reaction.' Since these data in all cases refer to ternary or high-order alloys it is not possible to put them to the test of simple binary diffusion formalism. It has not, therefore, been possible to make a certain statement as to the controlling mechanisms in the process. An assessment of the difficulties inherent in the conventional statistical metallographic approach suggested that a study of the problem by means of a macroscopic two-phase diffusion couple might contribute useful information. Accordingly, such a couple was synthesized, and the rate of motion of a ferrite-austenite phase boundary (the growth of an austenite layer at the expense of a ferrite layer) was determined. Wagner originally produced a diffusion solution applicable to the motion of a planar phase interface in a binary diffusion couple, assuming local equilibrium throughout the diffusion zone. This solution, which is stated free of typographical error* in Ref. where a is the position of the interface in A space (A = x/fi), C; and CL1 are the equilibrium inter-facial concentrations in phases I and 11, C: and C*1 are the initial bulk concentrations in phases I and 11, and & and are diffusion coefficients (assumed constant). If a diffusion couple consisting of homogeneous layers of ferrite and austenite in equilibrium is raised to a higher temperature, the austenite layer will grow at the expense of the ferrite.
