Austenite is often defined as a solid solution of carbon or carbide in a nonmagnetic form of iron. Conversely, magnetic measurements are often used by investigators for the purpose of detecting the degree of austenite decomposition after an iron alloy has been subjected to certain thermal or mechanical treatments. Association of the magnetic state with the gamma-phase decomposition is often extended to the alloys of iron with elements other than carbon. Definition of austenite as a nonmagnetic solid solution cannot be accepted in the light of available information without certain reservations. The relation of magnetic transformations with the gamma-phase decomposition in the complex alloys of iron has never been rigorously proved. The present investigation deals primarily with the magnetic transformation that occurs in carbon steels during the quenching process. The work was further limited to a study of magnetic transformation in carbon steels quenched at such rates as are necessary to retain the product of austenite decomposition in a martensitic state. Peevious Work Considerable information has accumulated in the literature with respect to the magnetic transformation in alloys of iron, but nearly all of it relates to transformations under the conditions of equilibrium between the phases of the alloy. Thick-Freeport coal by means of a 13-ft 6-in. diam Chance cone and 16 No. 7 Deister tables. The plant feed ranges between 370 and 410 tons per hr, of which approximately 31 pct is 1/4xO-in. size, and the plant reject ranges between 14 and 16 pct of the feed.

One of the most important problems in underground works is the assessment of the stability of underground openings and the determination of loads on eventual supporting structures. Under certain stress conditions, a hard and sound rock around an unlined opening may show a tendency to rock bursting, which can be prevented by appropriate measures. On the other hand, a less competent rock even if it fails in a less violent manner may give rise to a rock load because within limited regions surrounding the opening, the failed material may have a tendency to flow into the opening; this condition should be prevented by designing a proper supporting structure. The stability of the opening, as well as the value of the design loads acting on the supports in the latter case, depends clearly on the shape, extent, and location of the failed regions, which are often called “plastic zones.” It has been known for some time how the plastic zones develop in some very simple cases, such as in the case of a circular opening in an elastic ideally plastic medium subjected to a nongravitational stress fie1d.l However, to the knowledge of the authors, no information has been available up to now about the extent of the plastic zones in a more general case and for rocklike media. ASSUMPTIONS ON ROCK BEHAVIOR MADE IN THE CALCULATION The solution shown in this chapter is valid for a horizontal tunnel of circular cross section driven through a rock medium at a finite depth.

For the purposes of this analysis it is assumed that the petroleum industry has undergone a basic economic change whereby the degree of competition present in its operation is reduced by the collective control of production brought about by statme-directed proration. Formerly freely competitive in all its parts, the industry is now fully competitive only in its marketing, its manufacturing and transportation, its search for new oil supplies, its drilling operations (with some qualifications), and its capital movements. The practical problem before the industry in its new status is the maintenance of equilibrium, with planned control of crude-oil production (proration) substituted for competition and price as the regulatory mechanism at one point in the supply-demand system. It is further assumed that proration has become so firmly established in the legal and operating framework of the business that it may be looked upon as an institution. The purpose of this paper is to call attention to the effect of unregulated drilling upon the orderly functioning of proration. Economic Structure of Petroleum Industry The economic structure of the petroleum industry, under the current form of proration, may be visualized, in simplified form, as shown in Fig. 1. This diagram is designed to indicate the existing mechanism whereby supply and demand are equated. Demand is created largely by conditions external to the oil business, whereas supply is conditioned by a series of stages incidental to the discovery, development and production of a resource. The time elements involved in changes in demand and supply are of an entirely different order, the demand factor being much more flexible and "quicker" than the supply factors. It should be observed, also, that the position of price, formerly between "demand" and "supply," has been moved to a sidewise location where it still affects demand but influences current supply only through its bearing upon proration, drilling and search. Proration has been substituted for price as a throttle at the well head, but at this point only. The mechanism now works in this fashion: a declining price stimulates demand and the

THE British Industrial Fatigue Research Board has issued its annual report covering the year 1925, and a nine-page review of it, by George E. Shepard, was published in this country in the November, 1926, Bulletin of the Society of Industrial Engineers. The report gives results of three different investigations, all of which indicate that rest-pauses, where the spells .of work are 41/2 hr. long or more, not only increase the contentment of the workers, but often bring about an increase in output. A report on the physiology of ventilation is about to be published, and one on the theory of ventilation has been issued. These seem to add but little to the work being done in this country by the Bureau of Mines and the American Society of Heating and Ventilating Engineers. Other studies made are on atmospheric conditions in cotton weaving, on lighting in composing rooms, on repetitive work, the teaching of muscular skill, the energy expenditure in heavy work, the metabolic processes involved in violent exercise, the relation between oxygen intake and lactic acid in the blood, and fatigue in localized groups of muscles. Most of this material is intended for advanced workers in these fields, but will be of interest to engineers who desire to keep up with cur-rent progress in the determination of the facts involved in fatigue resulting from industrial work.

A. Cook K.A. Grace's article advocates usage of the terms describing resources as defined by the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) and the US Geological Survey (USGS). Originally recommended in 1943, the terms were revised in 1976 and again in 1980. Mr. Grace further recommends that the term reserves should be severely restricted and that it should encompass mining and processing factors. The list of references quoted in the article does not, however, mention the study concerning reserves that was made over a period of almost four years by a joint Committee on Definitions. This committee was sponsored by three societies - the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers (AIME), the Society of Economic Geologists (SEG), and the American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG). Most of the detailed work was done by a working party appointed by the Society of Mining Engineers (SME) of AIME. After studying previous definitions in the US as well as in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, France, and other European countries, the following definitions were proposed and accepted in 1974 by the SME board of directors. (Ore reserve definitions in Rhodesia, South Africa, or New Zealand were not mentioned as having been reviewed. Table 1 lists definitions from MINING ENGINEERING, July 1975. Notice in Table 1 it was mentioned, under Resources, that the definitions of reserves were recommended for the purposes of commercial evaluation. It was further stated that the terminology adopted by the USBM and the USGS, as released to the public, covering resources, was recognized as such. Mr. Grace also recommends that reserve calculations should allow for future losses in ore tonnage, ore grade, milling, and smelting. Unfortunately, it might take years to develop a prospect after it has been discovered. Mining methods have to be tested before being finalized in order to know what tonnage of ore is going to be lost, or how much dilution is likely to occur. The same problems are present in concentrating or in smelting. Operating mines usually know how mined grade compares with ore reserve grade. They can usually predict fairly closely what their final metal recoveries are probably going to be. It is, however, expecting too much to have to delay quoting reserves from say a recently drilled prospect. Any responsible mining geologist or mining engineer (or company for that matter) should state several things about an ore reserve calculation: that it is or is not a preliminary estimate only; that estimated grades have not been diluted to allow for a future, as yet unknown, mining method; that metal recoveries are or are not only tentative, based perhaps on drill hole samples only or on no metallurgical testing at all. [ ] Reserves of a partially explored prospect are always quoted when it becomes necessary to raise capital. If they are described as preliminary only (really just tonnage and grade estimates and not true "reserves") in addition to being accompanied by some of the items just mentioned, nobody is going to be misled. If, on the other hand, a report by a member of the SME or SEG is intentionally misleading, the individual must be reported and eventually disbarred from his or her society. To summarize, let us stay with the definitions of ore, ore reserves, and related terms as recommended and accepted by SME. I might add that on occasion I have used a fourth category in my ore reserve calculations, namely Geologically Possible Ore. This category is more or less the same as Inferred ore defined by the USBM and USGS. I have never given a grade to this category, which may be based only on geological mapping, geochemical sampling, or geophysical traversing. ?

As is well known, many questions affecting the properties and uses of a metal cannot be answered without careful consideration of the state of purity realized in the various operations of preparation, refining, or special treatment that have brought the product to its final state. The occurrellce of an impurity in minute quantity offers no guarantee that its effect will be inconsiderable because dissolved substances often modify the properties of a metal quite out of proportion to their concentration. In such cases the determination of solid solubility must be accepted as a problem of considerable difficulty, requiring the use of especially purified materials and methods not ordinarily used in the metallurgical laboratory. This aspect of the equilibrium between metals and their oxides is especially important and a search for fundamental data reveals little except conflicting opinion even concerning the systems of common occurrence and interest. Rhines and Mathewson1 in 1934 studied the solubility of oxygen in solid copper by annealing to equilibrium in air and gave reasons for the failure of other methods, notably the ordinary procedure of heat-treatment followed by microscopic examination, to yield reliable results. In this paper, a similar study has been made of the solubility of oxygen in cobalt. The simple theory of this method is outlined below. The mode of fatigue failure was found to be a function of colutrre jp-actiotz and was also noted to be controlled by the relative fatigue and strength characlerislics of the matrix and reinforcemenl. THE advantages to be gained by suitably incorporating high-strength filaments or whiskers into metallic matrices are well-recognized.' To date emphasis has been placed on the experimental determination of tensile strengths and elastic moduli of metal matrix composites measured parallel to unidirectionally aligned filaments. Several attempts have been made to relate experimentally measured tensile properties to theoretical values calculated from the properties of the components on the basis of the relatively simple "rule of mixtures" analysis. However, relatively few data have been reported in the literature on the fatigue behavior and mechanism of fatigue failure of metal matrix composites. In a study of fatigue crack propagation in aluminum plus steel wires and aluminum plus tungsten wires, Forsyth et a1.2 found that the incorporation of small numbers of filaments suitably dispersed were capable of substantially reducing the rate of fatigue crack propagation. For this purpose, the strength of the filaments appeared to be more important than the aspect ratio and the authors reported that parallel filaments were not the most favorable orientation for increased strength. In a basic study of the fiber reinforcement of metals, Williams and 0'brien3 report preliminary results which indicate a considerable improvement in fatigue strength in reversed bending fatigue of a steel wire-reinforced aluminum alloy composite. In a study of the influence of interfacial bonding on fatigue behavior, Baker4 has also reported improved fatigue properties in stainless steel-reinforced aluminum composites. In contrast, Ham and place5 report that, although tensile properties are improved greatly by filament reinforcement, the reinforcement of copper with continuous, brittle tungsten wires up to 23 vol pct was comparatively ineffective against fatigue. The authors attribute the poor fatigue properties of the composite to fatigue hardening of the matrix at the tips of cracks which can build up stress concentrations sufficiently large to fracture proximate filaments. Baker and cratchley6 failed to find marked improvements in the reversed-bending fatigue properties of silica-reinforced aluminum. The study was complicated by the complex behavior in a composite during the compres-sive half-cycles imposed in this type of loading. This was manifested in the failure of the composites by de-lamination, a contributing factor being the presence of aluminum oxide at the matrix-filament interface. THE difficulties inherent in table concentration operations as applied to gold, silver, lead and zinc ores, are accentuated in the scheelite mill, which has a flowsheet that is similar in general principles. The narrow "spread" in the specific gravity between scheelite and the usual gangue in which it occurs often makes its clean separation extremely difficult and in some cases impracticable. The problem is further complicated by the extreme friability of the mineral and its inordinate tendency to "slime," particularly where fine grinding is necessary and wet grinding methods are employed. The physical aspect of the occurrence of scheelite in the ores, the kind and character of the rock in which the mineral is present, its hardness, friability and the specific gravity of its constituents, as well as like characteristics of the associated minerals-pyrite, pyrrhotite, sphalerite, and others, all have a bearing on the successful milling of crude ores and the production of a concentrate that is marketable with minimum price penalty or none at all. Most tungsten deposits are considered low grade when the limiting factor of low percentage recovery by gravity methods is borne in mind. The great majority of deposits developed or in process of development carry from 0.4 to 1.0 per cent tungstic oxide. Ore carrying I per cent is considered good grade; 0.7 to 0.8 per cent, fair, and below that figure, low grade. Steady mill feed averaging upward of 1.0 per cent W03 is exceptional. Inasmuch as buying specifications demand a 60 per cent W03 content, the mineral content of the ores as mined must be concentrated to at least that degree. A few companies have constructed chemical plants for the treatment of their complex concentrates and low-grade flotation product, but the smaller operator must rely on table concentration, borrowing the tools and to a large extent the methods of his predecessors in the gold, silver, lead and zinc mills. Whether these are the best tools and methods that can be devised is an open question. Except in rare instances, table concentration, however carefully conducted, does not yield a satisfactory final recovery of the mineral content in headings as indicated by chemical determinations of tungstic oxide content. A saving of 60 to 65 per cent is considered fair, and an average 80 per cent recovery, exceptional. Each scheelite ore body is a separate problem. Details of handling that give best results in one case may not be successfully operative at a property on the same contact zone and but a short distance removed. Supplementary treatment of tailings by flotation may be successful in producing a low-grade concentrate of around 15 per cent WO3, which is adapted to further treatment chemically at a given property and entirely unsuccessful at another. This problem constitutes another of the unanswered questions. The following paragraphs relate solely to the beneficiation of scheelite ores by table concentration and supplementary methods.

Discussion of the paper of K. Huessener, (Trans., vol. 53, pp. 402 to 4333, and of the papers of Linn Bradley, H. D. EGbert and W. W. Strong, pp. 303, 319. R. J. WysoR, So. Bethlehem, Pa. (communication to the Secretary*). —At our plant (Bethlehem Steel Co.), we have had several Bradshaw burners under course of construction and erection for some time, but up to the present we have not had opportunity to put them in service. I regret that I can not take part in the discussion with some actual results from these burners. Mr. Huessener properly emphasizes the importance of obtaining the highest combustion temperature practicable in boiler practice, which demands a near approach to perfect combustion conditions. The ideal burner is the one which, while meeting the various mechanical requirements, fulfills the above condition under a wide range of gas pressure. The question as to the relative value of hot raw gas and cold washed gas for boiler use is a very interesting one. I think that in the past the importance of low temperature of washed gas sometimes has been overemphasized. Mr. Huessener has pointed out that so far as temperature is concerned, no advantage accrues in washing gas below 100" F. In many plants, there is a notable operating economy in using furnace cooling water, which is appreciably warmer than the supply water. However, in a given type of washer, other conditions being constant, the lower the exit gas temperature the lower will be the dust content; this is equivalent to saying that the more washing water is used, other conditions being constant, the lower will be the dust content of the exit gas. For each type of washer there is a certain desired average temperature difference between inlet water and exit gas, concomitant with known average dust and moisture contents, and with economical operation. With the present tendency toward smaller stove checkers, it is generally agreed that gas for stove use should be cleaned to a dust content of 0.20 grain or less. The method employed and extent of gas cleaning are clearly problems for individual furnace plants. As a general proposition, wet washing is decidedly more attractive for furnaces smelting soft, fine Lake ores than for those reducing chiefly hard, lumpy ores, such as the foreign and domestic magnetites. In the former case the average moisture content of the gas is probably 35 grains per cubic foot, the dust content is relatively high and the top temperature relatively low. In our plant, the ore mixtures consist almost exclusively of hard magnetites. The average dust content of the gas leaving the dust catcher will average only about 2 grains and the moisture about 12 grains per cubic foot, corresponding to saturation at about 83" F. SINCE the delivery of our paper on Some Comparative Properties of Tough-pitch and Phosphorized Copper,1 a new brand known as "oxygen-free high-conductivity copper" (brand OFHC) has become available to consumers. It was thought desirable to make a comparison between the properties of this material and those of the materials covered by our original paper and its discussion. AN extensive program of investigation is being carried out at Lehigh University in the study of arcs and arc welds of high-purity iron1, spon-sored by the Engineering Foundation. The part of that program reported in the present paper deals with welds made of high-purity iron in an argon atmosphere and for comparison with them welds made of the same iron in ordinary air. Welds of commercial steel also were made in argon and in air. The primary purpose of the study is to discover the basic physical constants of iron welds when not contaminated either by impurities in the iron or by the action of oxygen and nitrogen of the air during welding. Upon these constants can be founded such future studies as will determine what effects the various impurities and alloy elements present in steel have upon its welding characteristics, and what influence is exerted by the action of oxygen and nitrogen. The welding of steel involves such a multitude of variables, both of composition and of procedure, that development in the fabrication of this most important metal has necessarily been slow, wasteful, and in many instances discouraging. In the present investigation, the simplest possible condition has been selected; namely, iron practically free from contamination and a nonparticipating atmosphere, the inert gas argon. This simplification reduces the number of variables to a point where more rigid control of the system is possible. Although this study is significant for the contributions it makes to the science of steel fabrication, yet it is hoped that it will not be without value also in increasing knowledge of the nature and behavior of iron and steel in general. SulphuR has long been one of the banes of the steel manufacturer and often no effort and expense have been spared in order to reduce it to a small per cent. in the finished product. This condition is due to a general conviction that in many cases where steels have failed in service, sulphur has been the cause. But there has been a growing feeling in recent years that the verdict against sulphur has been unnecessarily severe. In cases of segregation it was present in. augmented amounts along with other impurities, but it had not caused the segregation. High sulphur in pig iron is caused by poor furnace conditions and the sulphur is merely one indication of an iron that has not been properly reduced. No amount of subsequent treatment under oxidizing conditions in the open-hearth furnace can remedy the defects, although the per cent. of sulphur may be considerably reduced. In other words, the causes of bad steel can frequently be traced back to bad pig iron, and sulphur is merely one indication that the pig iron is bad. The writer recently visited a steel plant where a mass of evidence had been accumulated which substantiated this fact, and the superintendent was emphatic in stating that high sulphur was not harmful provided the steel was not otherwise poor due to insufficient reduction in the blast furnace. The presence of a moderate amount of sulphur is desirable from the standpoint of the man who machines the steel. The low-sulphur material drags and the production of a smooth surface is very difficult. A slight increase in sulphur enables the machinist to produce a smooth surface without difficulty. Since, therefore, such large quantities of steel are subjected to machining, it becomes highly important that the sulphur controversy should be settled, and if its presence is proved to be harmless the ban on it should be lifted. ThE James diagonal-plane slimer is specially adapted to handle the finest slimes, but it will also handle sands as coarse as 40-mesh. The saving efficiency of this machine is due to the original construction ,of the deck, and to the rapid reciprocating movement imparted to it by the head-motion. The deck consists of a plurality of connected planes, having a certain fixed ratio of inclination one to another. These planes intersect each other diagonally to the stroke-line of the table and are arranged so as to give the pulp on the table a double treatment. This double concentration performed by the diagonal-plane deck produces cleaner concentrates and tailings than those obtained by the operation of two separate machines. The action of the diagonal planes settles, combines, and holds all the concentrates in one compact mass, sharply defined from the gangue, and easily cut away without loss. Many slime-concentrating machines distribute the feed-pulp for a distance of 4 or 5 ft. only, and upon a very limited settling-surface. This results in a thick, heavy deposit, from which it is impossible to stratify the values and wash away the gangue, the resulting products being dirty concentrates, and tailings carrying high values. The diagonal-plane slimer distributes the feed-pulp for a distance of 10 ft., and upon a settling-surface having an area of 40 sq. ft.; in other words, it spreads the pulp thinly on the table, which allows the metallic values to settle through the gangue quickly, forming a bottom stratum from which the thinly-distributed overlying stratum of gangue is easily brushed away by the feed-water without disturbing the underlying concentrates. STUDIES of surface relief and growth kinetics have lead to the concept that widmanstatten ferrite along with upper and lower bainite constitute a continuous series of decomposition products.1-4 Current models4 propose that these products form as plates with a coherent or semicoherent leading edge which propagates at a rate controlled by diffusion of carbon into the surrounding austenite. There are, however, important crystallographic and morphological differences between these products—particularly between upper and lower bainite. For example, upper bainite appears to exhibit a (11lIy orientation habit, whereas lower bainite develops with a more irrational habit near {2251y.5-7 Many of the morphological features of these decomposition products are not yet well-documented. Recent studiess have demonstrated that low-carbon martensites form as sheets of closely spaced needles on {lllly planes while higher-carbon martensites form as plates with {225}? or other orientation habits. The similarity in the crystallography of these two modifications of martensite with upper and lower bainite is striking. Therefore, a study of the morphology of bainite in a series of hypoeutec-toid alloy steels has been initiated to explore these relationships further. The question of immediate interest is whether upper and lower bainite form as plates or needles. A two-surface (approximately perpendicular) metallographic method was employed to study the morphology of bainite in a variety of low and medium alloy steels. Compositions of these steels have been reported elewhere. The behavior of 4340 and 4370 was typical and will be described here. Austenitizing treatments involved 20 min at 2350°F for 4340 and at 2000°F for 4370. Isothermal transformation was conducted in molten-salt baths. Upper bainite was produced at 925°F in the 4340 steel and lower bainite at 575°F in 4370 with transformation times adjusted to produce 10 to 15 pct of the decomposition product. Many of the morphological features of upper bainite have been catalogued in the recent literature.'' The two principal variants observed in the present investigation are illustrated in Fig. l(a). One form appears as long, thin plates or needles and the other as small, frequently irregularly shaped particles. Both variants may occur as isolated forms but more frequently appear in groups as demonstrated in Fig. l(a). Two-surface analysis reveals that these two variants constitute different sections through a single morphological form. To demonstrate this, a number of sections perpendicular to the plane of Fig. l(a) were prepared at various positions along the length of the elongated particles. A section taken at position 1 in Fig. l(a) is presented in Fig. l(b). Here, the dark line represents the edge of the sample and the left-hand portion of this photomicrograph is that from the surface perpendicular to the original plane of polish. Since it was necessary to repolish the original surface after each sectioning, the shape of the bainite particles on this surface, right hand side of Fig. l(b), changes with each sectioning.
