The use of a pneumatic process for removing fine material (usually less than 48-mesh) is increasing in the preparation of stoker-size coal. The fine material, produced as a byproduct, is known as dedusting-plant dust. Since fusain is the most friable ingredient in bituminous coal (it may readily be rubbed to an impalpable powder with the fingers), it tends to accumulate in this byproduct. While studying the properties of cokes produced by blending Illinois coals with other materials, considerable quantities of fusain were required. Dedusting-plant dust suggested itself as a convenient supply. It became necessary, therefore, to determine how much fusain was contained in a measured sample of dust, how the fusain was distributed with respect to size and specific gravity in the sample, and whether or not it would be feasible or desirable further to concentrate or to recover the fusain from the dust before using it in the blends to be coked. The results obtained indicate the possibilities of production of a high-fusain material. Previous Work Lehmann and Stach have developed a processl,2 for separation of banded bituminous coals into their band ingredients by impact pulverization followed by screening or air separation. They found, as might be expected, that the fusain was concentrated in the very fine material. Prockat and Raute3 examined samples from dedusting plants operating in the Ruhr. They separated the dust into various screen sizes and determined the composition of each of these sizes in terms of the banded ingredients of the original coal. In the dusts examined by them, the finest material was always high in fusain, and most of the fusain contained in the original samples could be recovered from this fraction.

Extensive beds of rock salt occur in New York, Michigan, Kansas, and Texas. Wells are drilled through the beds, cased, and equipped with a suspended center tube. By circulating water through such a well, the soluble saline is dissolved and a brine produced. Operation of a well results ordinarily in the formation of an inverted conical cavity in the saline, inasmuch as the dissolving action of the fresh water is more rapid at the top of the bed than at the bottom. Under continued operations, the side wall of the cavity becomes so flat that a blanket of mud is deposited thereon and if the bed is overlain with shale or a soft rock caving follows. Three methods of operating wells have been employed—the "Tully plan," "the Detroit plan," and "the Trump plan." Both the Tully plan and the Detroit plan involve the formation of the aforesaid conical cavity with constant caving of shale above and deposition of mud on the side wall; the Trump plan was developed to avoid both these circumstances and thus materially prolong the life of a well. Details of the three plans follow. The Tully Plan In the Tully plan, the water passes down the annular space between the casing and the center tube, the brine rising in the center tube (Figs. I and 2). An inverted conical cavity is formed, the side wall of which relatively soon becomes so flat that it is blanketed by mud and impurities from the rock salt; this blanket limits dissolving action to the perimeter of the base of the cone, situated at the top of the saline bed. Caving of the overlying strata follows, and the total production of brine from the well is comparatively small. The Detroit Plan In the Detroit plan, the water passes down the center tube, the brine rising in the annular space between the center tube and casing (Figs. I and 2). Initially, this flow forms a pear-shaped cavity in the bottom of the salt bed, but this cavity soon changes in shape to that of an inverted cone, as under the Tully plan, with the attendant disadvantages inherent in that plan. The orientation distribution of surface-energy -induced secondary recrystallized grains was determined. This work was conducted on thin sheets of a 3 pct Si-Fe alloy annealed under environmental conditions that furor grouth of grains with a (100) plane in the surface of the sheet. The texture was found to be extremely sharp and almost independent of sheet thickness. The distribution varied exponentially with the angular deviation from the {100} plane. It was possible to relate the distribution to the nu-cleation rate of the secondary rains as influenced by the surface-energy difference. THE role of surface energy in the secondary grain growth of cube-oriented grains (grains with a (100) plane in the plane of the sheet) in thin Si-Fe sheets has been previously discussed.1-4 In high-purity sheet material normal grain growth usually occurs until the grains have extended through the sheet. Further grain growth is inhibited by the thermal grooving of the boundaries at the sheet surface. However, additional growth of cube grains can occur by a secondary grain growth process under conditions where the (100) plane has a lower surface energy than other orientations. Apparently for these alloys, cusps exist in the polar plot5 of surface free energy with the lowest cusp energy occurring at the (100) orientations. This has been reported to be the result of preferential adsorption of sulfur on the (100) planes.6 As a result of this process, a distribution of orientations could arise from two possible mechanisms. First, when a cusp is present in the polar plot of surface free energy, there are orientations inside the cusp that have a lower surface energy than elsewhere on the polar plot. Also, at sufficiently high temperatures, flat surfaces whose orientations are inside or just outside the cusp (depending on its shape) can often thermally etch, yielding a microscopically stepped surface of even lower surface energy. As a result, grains oriented close to cube would also have a lower surface free energy, either because of the cusp shape or by thermal etching, and could possibly grow as secondary grains by the surface-energy phenomenon. One should thus observe a distribution in the surface orientation of the cube grains comprising the secondary structure. It is the purpose of this paper to investigate this orientation distribution experimentally and to discuss the factors involved in its formation. For this purpose, the surface orientations of a large number of secondary grains in various sheet thickness were determined by means of the Laue back-reflection X-ray technique. PROCEDURE A vacuum-melted 3 pct Si-Fe alloy containing a nominal impurity content of 0.005 wt pct was processed into strip. A single cold-rolling step of 90 pct reduction was used for each strip regardless of the final sheet thickness. Final strip thicknesses of 0.60, 0.30, 0.15, and 0.075 mm were used. Care was taken to insure that the final strip surface was smooth and flat. All strips of a given thickness were annealed together at 1200°C in dry hydrogen (dew point -70°C) to develop the desired secondary structure and to insure identical environmental annealing conditions. The annealing time was selected to develop a complete secondary structure in the thinner sheets but to permit the thicker sheets (0.60 mm) to have residual primary grains remaining. This was necessary to determine whether growth impingement could lead to one secondary grain consuming another at a greater angular deviation. For the X-ray determination of the surface orientation of the secondary grains, a special specimen holder was used. The camera and holder arrangement could be aligned by X-raying a grain in three positions rotated 180 deg to each other. Thus, with a small beam X-ray focus (1 mm), the surface orientation of any grain could be determined to within one-half a degree. The surface orientations of one hundred cube secondary grains were determined for each sheet thickness. The criteria of a secondary grain were its size relative to the sheet thickness and the number of sides of the grain observed in the sheet surface. (A primary recrystallized grain extending through a sheet will generally have six edges visible in the plane of the sheet, whereas a secondary grain will have many more when growing entirely into primary grains.) Grains were selected as randomly as possible by X-raying every secondary grain found along a line drawn on the strip. No attempt was made to determine the exact orientation of the planes of the surface, as many strips from randomly selected sheets were used. IN the coal review for the United States for 1875, the Engineering and Mining Journal, January 1st, 1876, remarks about the Richmond coal basin " It has contributed but little to the supply of fuel during the year past, notwithstanding the fact that it is the most favorably situated of all our coal-fields, and possesses a fuel of good quality, well adapted to many important uses. An unaccountable lethargy seems to have fallen on all who have touched this field ; and yet, in the future it can scarcely fail to become one of the great sources of coal supply." In most respects indorsing the above remarks, I take occasion to lay before the Institute the following facts in defence of the Rich¬mond basin; and not willing to criticize other mining enterprises in this field, I will make this one remark in general for all of them. While it is true that very little coal has been raised during the year in this field, it is equally true that even the little that has been raised could hardly be sold. When the output of the largest coal districts in the United States decreases, in consequence of the state of the market, it is not to be wondered at that the former small output of this basin dwindled down to almost nothing. But a far deeper¬seated evil, under which this field is suffering, may be discerned from the following remarks, which I hope will show that the latter part of the above remark in the Journal is not altogether fair. As the history of one mine in this district very nearly represents the history of the whole field, I will endeavor to give an account of the development of the Midlothian Mines, ranging amongst the old¬est in the district, partially taken from a report of Col. Wooldridge, in 1841. Coal was mined in this neighborhood as early as 1700, and used (then so-called extensively) in the vicinity in 1775. A

(Butte Meeting, August, 1913.) THE following paper aims to make a full explanation of the phenomena of rock jointing. It may be unnecessary to give any general description of what are termed joints in rocks, but. Professor Geikie's clear and faithful generalizations are so illuminating that no excuse need be given for introducing the following and other quotations into this paper: "Almost all rocks are traversed-by vertical or highly inclined divisional planes termed joints. These have been regarded as clue in some way to contraction during consolidation (fissures of retreat) ; and this is no doubt their origin in innumerable cases. But, on the other hand, their frequent regularity and persistence across materials of very varying texture suggest rather the effects of internal pressure-and-movement within the crust."1 General Explanation.-In this paper I show that the phenomenon of jointing may to a large extent be accounted for by the pressure of the water contained in the pores of the rock. To understand this, each constituent grain of. the porous material may be considered to be separately compressed by the 'water which submerges it. As all the grains are held together by cohesion, the whole mass is contracted by this pressure. In an indefinitely extended mass, however, there must be a limit to the possible contraction without rupture, because the material is restrained from. moving freely by other material around its boundaries. The mass of rock thus becomes broken up. This phenomenon is known as " shrinkage " jointing. The terra "shrinkage" is an apt one, if it be understood that the shrinkage of the rock is often brought about by change of stress. Stresses.-The compressive component of water stress on the individual grains is evidently the same as that of the water with which it is in contact. This is so, both. before and after the jointing is formed. Before the jointing is formed there is, however, a tensile stress in one or more directions which keeps the material from contracting.

The two most widely used methods of measuring hardness are the Brinell and the scleroscope. In the Brinell method a hardened steel ball is pressed into the steel under a definite load and the area of the resulting depression is measured. The load in kg. per sq. mm. of the area of the depression is taken as a measure of the hardness. Within certain limits the hardness number so determined is independent of the load or the size of the ball. In the scleroscope method a small weight carrying a diamond point is dropped through a glass tube upon the steel and the amount of rebound is taken as proportional to the hard-' ness. In both methods the scale of hardness is an arbitrary one; however, they agree in a comparative may, that is, a steel showing 50 per cent. increase in hardness by the Brinell test mill show approximately 50 per cent. increase in hardness by the scleroscope test. Yet upon consideration of the two methods it appears that, upon a steel which has been carbonized, this should not be the case ; for the scleroscope method gives almost exclusively the surface-hardness, and the condition of the material below the surface has but a slight bearing upon the hardness number. The results given by the Brinell method should, however, be the exact opposite; for the depth of penetration 'of a ball pressed into the steel would be dependent to a large extent upon the condition of the material below the surface. This is particularly obvious when it is considered that the size of the ball ordinarily used in the Brinell method is 1 cm. (about 8 in.) in diameter under a load of 3,000 kg., while the diamond point of the scleroscope is in the neighborhood of 0.01 in. across, fitted in a hammer of about 0.5 oz. weight and dropping from a height of 10 inches.

Until recently the only automatic control of electric parameters in submerged-arc furnaces has been electrode control with electrode current or electrode impendance as controlled variables. Elkem Research and Development Centre has delivered this kind of control for a long time, both stand- alone controllers and control algorithms incorporated in an integrated computer control system. In recent years we have noticed increasing interest in more sophisticated electric control. Results both from pilot-plant experiments and from production furnaces show that proper electric conditions in the furnace are more important to the furnace operation than was assumed earlier. Optimal electric conditions lead to lower power consumption per ton of metal and allow use of cheaper raw materials Besides, power contracts and the market situation lead to more frequent change of load on the furnaces. Therefore it is important to vary the load in a way that allows proper electric conditions to be maintained. Based on this renewed interest in electric control, Elkem Research and Development Centre has carried out a project, starting with analysis of existing electric instrumentation and control algorithms for electrode control, and ending up with an integrated electric control strategy including power-demand control as shown in Figure 1. In this paper we will give a resume of this work and present a new integrated control strategy put into operation for the first time in June 1983. [ ]

INTRODUCTION THIS chapter on the rô1e of physical-chemical processes in ore deposition presents unusual difficulties because it attempts to discuss the theory of processes that are very imperfectly under- stood, but which are among the most fundamental problems now before the student of ore formation. It is generally believed that a great variety of ore deposits are in some way derived from igneous rocks; but we desire to know the mechanism of their splitting off from the parent magma, the physical and chemical character of the material that acts as a medium for transfer from magma to the point of deposition, the manner of deposition, and the methods of replacement and removal of the invaded rocks. This problem is difficult for the field geologist because it concerns forces that for the most part have long since ceased to act. It involves a complex system of which the time for completion extends from the first development of the parent magma through its intrusion, its slow cooling and crystallization, and the final escape of its last residuum, a time probably represented by millions of years. In space the processes extend from profound depths of the abyssal magma which can never be directly observed, through the horizons characterizing deep-seated igneous rocks and ore deposits; those formed at moderate depths; and ends with surficial ones and surface thermal springs. The geologist usually can study the effect at but one of these horizons: he must attempt to fit his puzzle together while seeing but a few parts at a time. Thus he must deal with many isolated phenomena, as if they were the result of many physical and chemical systems; when in fact his problem involves a single exceedingly complex system, and will only be understood when that entire complex system is understood. The geophysicist is handicapped because he must attempt to interpret an extraordinary complex system, involving physical and chemical conditions which he can never hope to duplicate fully, through the study of many exceedingly simple systems.

In the fall of 1969, ASARCO and Newmont Mining Co. began the design of the 700tpd concentrator at their Black Cloud shaft located near Leadville, Colo. The concentractor would treat by flotation a Pb-Zn-Ag ore containing minor gold values. Flowsheet design was based on laboratory test work performed at the Minerals Research Testing Laboratory of ASARCO. Since the concentrator is located at an elevation of 11,000 ft, cold weather was a major factor in design considerations. The original capacity was designed as 700 tpd but for various reasons an ultimate capacity of 1,000 tpd was desired. This necessitated special consideration in the design of several areas, particularly the grinding circuit. The grinding circuit chosen was a single 9 X 12 ball mill operating in closed circuit with one 20-in. cyclone. The ball mill will operate at low speed and as an overflow type originally. The mill can be speeded up and converted to grate type for handling the larger tonnage when required. Thickeners and filters were oversized and space was left for additional flotation cells in order to handle the increased tonnage in these areas. Pumps were sized so that they could handle the increased tonnage by increasing their speed. Construction began in May 1970; the Black Cloud concentrator went on-stream in April 1791.

An experimental study has been made of the solubility of nitrogen in liquid iron and liquid Fe-C alloys using levitation melting and a rapid quenching device. Iron alloy droplets were equilibrated with nitrogen gas at 1 atm pressure, quenched, and analyzed. Previous techniques for studying the Fe-C-N system have produced data which me in marked disagreement. This disagreement is due largely to errors caused by reaction between the molten alloy and the crucible material. With the levitation procedure, errors from this source have been eliminated and precise solubility data obtained for temperatures between 1450° and 1750°C. C-N interactions in molten iron have been expressed in terms of first- and second-order free energy, enthalpy, and entropy parameters. ALTHOUGH the solubility of nitrogen in iron base alloys is in general small, the effects of nitrogen on the properties of steel may be quite profound. For most purposes nitrogen in finished steels is undesirable, particularly in the low-carbon grades, since on cooling to room temperature the solubility limit of nitrogen in the steel may be exceeded and this can lead to embrittlement and loss of ductility on aging. On the other hand, nitrogen can improve the work-hardening properties and machinability of steels while in certain stainless grades nitrogen is important in order to stabilize the austenite phase. It is, therefore, desirable that one should be able to predict the solubility of nitrogen in liquid iron alloys. To do this, information is required concerning the interactions between nitrogen and the various alloying elements which may be present in liquid iron. There have been several investigations of these effects in recent years1"7 and the interactions between nitrogen and many elements dissolved in liquid iron are now known to a high degree of precision at steel-making temperatures. Unfortunately, a number of iron alloy systems which are of interest in steelmaking have been difficult to deal with by the experimental techniques generally used for this type of investigation. Among the most important of these are the Fe-C alloys. In the past, two methods have been widely used for determining nitrogen solubilities: the Sieverts' technique, in which the amount of nitrogen required to saturate a given mass of liquid metal at a particular temperature and pressure is measured volumetrically, and the sampled-bath technique in which liquid metal held in a crucible is equilibrated with a gas phase containing a known partial pressure of nitrogen, and samples drawn from the melt are quenched and analyzed. These two methods have been discussed in detail elsewhere.5,8 With the Sieverts' technique, errors may be introduced from the following sources: i) Gas adsorption on metal films which have condensed on the cooler parts of the reaction chamber. ii) Uncertainty in the determination of "hot volume" calibrations. iii) Crucible-melt interaction, particularly if a gaseous reaction product is formed or if the melt becomes contaminated with material from the crucible walls. The sampled-bath method may also suffer from errors due to reaction between the melt and the crucible material. In addition, there is the possibility that gas may be lost from the sample during solidification and cooling. In the present investigation, the solubility of nitrogen in liquid iron alloys has been studied by means of a new technique based on the use of levitation melting equipment and a rapid quenching device. In addition to the fact that problems of the type outlined above are avoided, this particular approach has the following advantages: i) The high-frequency current induces vigorous stirring within the levitated droplet so that gas-metal equilibration is rapidly attained. ii) The gas phase surrounding the melt can be changed very quickly and is easily controlled. For example, a droplet may be levitated in helium, deoxidized in hydrogen, equilibrated with nitrogen, and quenched, within a period of 15 min. ii) Melts can be readily under cooled or superheated, thus extending the effective temperature range of an investigation and allowing temperature-dependent data to be determined with a high degree of precision. Excellent reviews of levitation melting techniques and their application to physical-chemistry studies at high temperature have been published recently by Jenkins et al.,9 Peifer,10 and Rostron.11 In the present investigation a levitation melting technique has been used to obtain data for the solubility of nitrogen in pure liquid iron and liquid Fe-C alloys at temperatures between 1450° and 1750°C. The solidification of poly crystalline zone-refined lead has been examined. A novel casting technique was used, with several advantages such as unidirectional heat flow, atmosphere control, and decanting of the liquid during any stage of growth. The experimental results show the separate existence of two textures, a (111) surface texture at the chill surface and a texture in the columnar zone, in the absence of conditions which would produce dendritic growth. WALTON and chalmers have most recently shown that the dendrite direction is the preferred axial orientation for the solidification of many metals in casting. Experimentally, for aluminum and lead, they showed that in the columnar zone the dendrite direction, <l00>, predominated, developing from an equiaxed chill cast layer that exhibited no preferred orientation. A reasonable description of the way in which grains closer to the dendrite orientation were able to encompass other grains was then set forth. For their materials, it was also shown that high superheats could inhibit a preferred axial orientation from developing, presumably by inhibiting dendrite growth. The observations of Rosenberg and iller, on the other hand, showed that zone-refined lead, cast under conditions similar to those of Walton and halmers,&apos; had a definite <111> texture in the columnar zone. However, no examination was made of the chill surface to find out if the columnar zone texture was independent of the orientations at the surface. Since the existence of preferred growth in Upure" lead is thus in doubt, a reexamination of the casting of zone-refined lead is presented here, using a novel casting technique. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES AND RESULTS Zone-refined lead was prepared from two starting materials;99.999+pct supplied by ASARCO, and 99.999pct supplied by COMINCO. A new electrical logging method called Laterolog is described which provides for better recording of formation resistivity. In this method a current, preferably of constant intensity, is forced into the formation perpendicularly to the wall of the hole as a sheet of predetermined thickness by means of a special electrode arrangement and of an autonlatic control system. The essential advantages of the Laterolog over the regular resistivity logs are explained. With the Laterolog, the mud column has much less influence than with conventional methods. The Laterolog is, therefore. particularly useful in wells drilled with highly conductive mud. Moreover. when the electrode system is located opposite a bed of moderate or small thickness, the disturbing effect of the adjacent formations becomes practically eliminated, provided the bed is thicker than the sheet of current. which itself is usually a few inches to a few feet thick. The sequences of beds are. therefore, much more sharply differentiated, and, in many cases, it is possible to read directly from the logs values close to the true resistivities of the formations without further corrections. Field examples are shown to illustrate the results of the method in various types of formations. INTRODUCTION As soon as it was introduced into the petroleum industry, electrical logging roved to be a powerful instrument for the delineation of the strata traversed by bore holes and for correlation of such strata." Research and engineering efforts were mostly devoted at this early time to the design of the techniqurs which could provide the best data for these purpoes. Later, attention was directed toward the quantitative analy5i.s of electrical logs, in order to obtain information on. reservoir characteristics, and, in particular, on oil and water saturation.3,4 Efforts have been made, accordingly, with a view to improving the already existing methods, or to finding new methods which could satisfy these new requirements." Quantitative analysis implies a determination as accurate as possible of the true resistivity of the formations. In fact, however; the "apparent resistivity" recorded in front of a given bed by a conventional electrical logging method is frequently quite different from the true resistivity of this bed. This is due to the combined influence of the mud column, of the adjacent formations both above and below the bed, and of the invaded zone, in which the original fluid has been more or less replaced by mud filtrate. When the beds are thick enough, and, as is frequently the case in sand and shale formations, when their resistivity is not much greater than that of the mud, it is generally possible to obtain their true resistivity directly on the electric log, or at least to obtain an approximate value which can be corrected without undue difficulty by means of recently published charts known as "departure curves."" When the beds are thin, and particularly when, in addition. their resistivity is substantially greater than that of the mud column, the apparent resistivities recorded on conventional logs are seriously affected, and it is generally very difficult, if at all possible, to estimate their true resistivity with a good enough accuracy. In the most severe cases, such as are encountered in holes drilled through hard formations with muds of high salinity, the conventional logs are so distorted and rounded that they do not even show clearly the houndaries of the different beds. In order to overcome the effect of the mud column and of the adjacent formations, it is possible to make use of appro. priate systems whereby the measurements involve a comp3ratjvelv thin slice of space at the level of the measuring device. St. Joe Minerals Corp. opened a new $30 million mine and mill at its Balmat-Edwards division in September. It will be the largest single zinc mining operation in the United States. St. Joe expects to produce more than 200,000 tons of zinc concentrates from its combined Balmat-Edwards mines and mills in 1972, equivalent to more than 100,000 tons of zinc metal-20% of U.S. mine production. The company has operated in Northern New York since 1926, having commenced zinc mining with its Edwards mine and mill, 12 miles from Balmat. They will continue to operate at a rate of 31,000 tons of concentrate per year. St. Joe started the Balmat facility in 1930 with two mine shafts and a mill, with a capacity of 2300 tpd.
