It still rains in the Choco! I well remember one evening a dozen years ago, while traveling toward the town of Negua in a small champa or dug-out canoe, the rain fell so heavily that I had to work my hardest to bail out the water with a large totuma or gourd in order to keep the canoe afloat, the native boatman meanwhile plying his paddle in the stern. If any one thinks bailing is easy work, let him scoop out a quart or more at a stroke, 40 times a minute for half an hour, and I venture that he will change his opinion. These small canoes required only one paddler to make the 3 miles an hour which is the standard rate of aquatic progress on the Choco. Another time, on the Atrato river, about six o'clock in the afternoon, the rain fell so heavily that an empty gourd, 9 in. in diameter and 4.5 deep, was filled to the brim in 90 sec., timed by a watch. Such downpours are typical, but unless caught in one it is not specially noticed. These downpours seldom last more than an hour, and frequently cover only a limited area, occasionally falling on one bank of a river and not on the other. During the night-time, the rain, if gentle, will usually last until dawn, and sometimes an intermittent drizzle will keep up all day as well, although, as a rule, it rarely rains during the day. The rise of the rivers, due to the rain-fall, varies from a few inches to several feet. One night in August, 1899, the spuds of the dredge Margaret, operating on the Atrato river, showed a rise of 16 ft., and for 3 days thereafter occurred the greatest flood known in that district for 32 years. Preferred orientation, particularly in irons and low-carbon steel, is a phenomenon that is both of considerable importance and theoretical interest. At times it is a liability and at other times an asset. In deep-drawing operations, preferred orientation is extremely undesirable because it necessitates trimming operations and increases scrap loss. Furthermore, oriented metals are likely to crack more easily than randomly oriented material because the forming of symmetrical and unsymmetrical shapes out of preferentially oriented metals and alloys increases the probability of rupture in regions of high stress, owing to differential ductility.' In the electrical industry, on the other hand, preferentially oriented silicon irons are in demand for transformer application because of the improved magnetic permeabilities in the rolling direction.2 This phenomenon of preferred orientation in soft magnetic materials has been responsible for the tremendous improvement in transformer design and construction in recent years. Directional properties in metals have received a great deal of attention in the metallurnical -literature,3-9 in which much of the information reported about orientation has been obtained by conventional methods, mechanicai properties and X-rays. A wealth of data has been obtained and often at a great expenditure of time. The recent introduction of the magnetic torque measurements on ferromagnetic materials provides a very simple and rapid method of evaluating orientation. The judicious use of the method can supply important information, but it should be borne in mind that such studies must be supplemented by X-rays, optical methods,10 and etch and pressure figures" to get a rational understanding of the orientation phenomena. No claims are made that the magnetic torque of evaluating orientation will reveal the behavior of the metal in deep drawing. For this purpose the accepted tests for deep-drawing quality must be used. For a good drawing stock, which must have low impurities, desirable grain size, ductility, strength, hardness, good surface, random orientation, and good recrystallization behavior, it cannot be expected that any simple test will be satisfactory for appraising all the factors. The only factor on which the magnetic method can be used is orientation, which is, of course, of considerable importance. When directionality can cause a 10 to 15 per cent change in tensile strength and a IOO to 300 per cent change in tear length,12 it goes without saying that a reliable as well as rapid method for detecting these changes would be desirable. There are certain inherent advantages in testing orientation by the torque method: The method is rapid with the proper type of equipment; no elaborate preparation of specimens is required—it is only necessary to punch or machine a I-in. disk of the sheet material and insert it into the testing device.

STATISTICAL methods are becoming increasingly important for interpreting routine reports, or for analyzing special test data in industrial plants, such as steel plants. They have already become practically a necessity to the plant metallurgist. A paper by Chancellor,' written in 1933, gives many examples of the benefits the plant metallurgist can derive from the use of these methods. The present paper discusses applications of importance to many others who must analyze reports in the steel plant, as well as other examples of interest to metallurgists. Statistical Methods Logically Suited to Plant Problems.-Statistical methods are not new as a branch of mathematics. Until comparatively recently, however, practical applications were confined mainly to actuarial science,, biology, and economics; fields in which an observed result is obviously influenced (and often determined) by a complicated set of variables more or less constantly tending to affect it. As pointed out by Daeves,2 a decade or more ago, problems in industry are basically similar to those in these other fields in that a given result is at least partly due to that chance combination of causes happening to be present at the time. When trying to do the same thing repeatedly, constant results are never attained; they vary about the desired result with more or less well defined mathematical regularity. Such a condition arises out of the great number of factors tending to affect the final result. If statistical methods are so valuable to the biologist or economist, why then should .they not also be of great value to plant managers and engineers, and to all who must interpret reports from various sources in the industrial plant? Within the last few years, industry has become conscious of this situation, and the use of these methods has been rapidly expanding in such plants. † Many Useful Statistical Devices Available.-Many statistical methods of attack are available for the analysis of plant data. I have frequently stated that while the chemical composition of steel is important, yet even greater importance is connected with the mechanical and heat treatment of the metal. During the past year I encountered such a positive example of that fact that I deem it worth putting upon record. A prominent railway system divided an order for open-hearth steel rails between two steel works, both of which are under the control of the same corporation; giving to one about 18,000 tons, and to the other 7,500 tons of the same section and to be made under the same specifications. The rolling results obtained in the two mills varied so widely that a study of the figures is intensely interesting and serves to illustrate the advantages obtained by carefu1 ingot casting, and, quite as pertinently, the possible benefits of careful subsequent heating and rolling with moderate reductions in the rolling process. The smaller order was rolled complete in four installments during the same months that the larger order was being made in six separate installments; but, to permit of exact comparisons, the totals of the four installments (completing the order with the mill which I will call A) are given with the totals of the first four installments of the larger order, made by the mill designated as B. DESPITE almost fifty years of commercial practice, the sintering of iron ore has received little fundamental study. Much of the theoretical work1-'has dealt with the constitution of sinter produced under widely varying conditions. While these studies have broadened our knowledge of the changes that occur in the sintering zone and in the freshly formed sinter during the early stages of cooling, they provide little insight into the changes that precede the formation of sinter. These preliminary changes merit study as a part of the overall process. Hessle. working with beds of Swedish magnetite concentrates, was one of the first investigators to study the sintering process in its entirety. On the basis of temperatures observed at various levels of the bed during sintering, he postulated a number of distinct reaction zones to account for the chemical changes leading to the formation of sinter. A more direct method of attack is that of arresting the sintering zone after it has progressed part way through the bed. A study of a vertical cross section through such a quenched bed provides direct information on the changes taking place at various levels. This method was used by McBriar et al.' to show that several well-defined zones of chemical change existed within beds that were typical of British sintering practice. The same general method of attack was developed independently in the present investigation to study partially sintered beds typical of American practice. Experimental Sintering Equipment The sintering operation was carried out on an experimental scale with the equipment shown in Fig. 1. The refractory-walled sintering chamber A was 11 in. deep and averaged 9 in. in diameter. Air was introduced through a tapered flow section B, which contained the orifice C for accurate metering of the incoming air. This section was located directly above the square ignition housing D, which in turn rested upon the sintering chamber A. The bed was ignited with burner E. The required suction for the operation was furnished by a fan F, which had an air capacity of 500 cfm (stp). Hot exhaust gases from the sintering chamber were cleaned in the dustcatcher G before entering the exhaust fan. In the study of partially sintered beds, it was essential to find some technique for removing the entire charge from the sintering pot without disarranging the unsintered bottom portion. This problem was finally solved by sintering the charge in a removable basket, which snugly fitted the sintering chamber. This basket was constructed of two thicknesses of window screen and was lined with a 3/16-in. layer of asbestos paper. The bottom of the basket consisted of two thicknesses of wire screen, which were fastened to the basket wall. For high fuel mixtures, additional insulation was provided by a somewhat thicker layer of asbestos cement. Preparation of Partially Sintered Mixtures The moist feed was carefully placed in the sintering basket, to prevent segregation of the particles, which varied widely in size and composition. A thermocouple was placed in the center of the basket with the hot junction halfway down, and the mixture was evenly distributed around it. During ignition and throughout the sintering of the upper half of the bed, the hot junction temperature increased very little. When the sintering zone reached the halfway point, as indicated by the sudden increase in the hot junction temperature, the charge was quenched. During quenching the suction was turned off and the orifice was tightly stoppered to prevent further influx of air. At the same time, nitrogen was admitted to the sintering chamber through the orifice tap. As soon as the nitrogen had displaced the air and products of combustion, the charge was removed from the sintering pot for immediate dissection. It is impossible to preserve the exact zone structure of the bed at the instant that combustion is arrested unless the downward transmission of heat is also immediately stopped. Fortunately, heat transfer is very slow in beds containing a stationary fluid, especially if the particle size is small. It follows that the minimum quantity of nitrogen should be used to displace the air and that static conditions be established as soon as possible. IN the spring of 1931 an experiment was made at Anaconda with a small reverberatory furnace, with which was combined a roasting shaft. The arrangement is shown in the accompanying drawing (Fig. 1) and requires but little explanation. The general idea was to roast .flotation concentrates, mixed with the proper fluxing materials, by dropping them down a heated shaft, from which the calcines would enter the smelting zone of the reverberatory furnace through an opening in the roof. The hearth of the reverberatory was 3 ft. wide by 21 ft. long. The roasting shaft was 3 ft. square inside and had an effective height of about 20 ft. . The reverberatory furnace was arranged so that it could be charged either directly through the roof with regular hot calcines, in the usual manner, or by means of the shaft, at the top of which were a feed-ing arrangement by which cold flotation concentrates, suitably fluxed, could be fed continuously and a pipe through which cold air was blown in. Means were provided for distributing the feed over the cross-section of the roasting shaft. At first a mechanical arrangement was used but later it was found that a simple cone served the purpose equally well and gave less operating trouble. On account of the small size of the equipment, it was realized that absolute capacity and fuel consumption figures would mean but little. It was not to be expected that ratios comparable to those obtained in large furnaces could be gotten, and the only way in which any idea could be obtained as to the possibilities of the combination furnace was to run it in parallel with the reverberatory furnace charged in the usual manner and operating without the shaft. The results of such parallel runs are given in Table 1. The amount of oil burned in the reverberatory was purposely maintained at substantially the same rate during both runs in order that the benefits resulting from the shaft might be gaged.

Knowledge of a large number of the physical properties of the hydrocarbons is needed in the calculations and studies of the production engineer. Since experimental data on these properties of the individual hydrocarbons and their mixtures are available in only a relatively few cases, the use of generalized correlations has developed rapidly in the last decade. The generalized correlations of pressure, volume and temperature,' enthalpy2 and vapor-liquid equilibria13 on the basis of reduced temperatures and pressures, are outstanding examples of this development. These correlations are of particular value to the production engineer interested in the flow of oil and gas, since they can be used to estimate the conditions under which segregation of phase occurs as well as the composition, density, and relative amounts of the phases. The technique of using the correlations for such estimations has been published by several authors4 and will not be considered in this paper. A considerable number of data have been obtained to check the generalized pressure-volume-temperature correlations, and these data indicate that such relations hold for the hydrocarbons from methane to heptane. The accuracy is in general sufficient for most engineering pressure-volume-temperature calculations. However, the generalized correlations of enthalpy and vapor-liquid equilibria have in general been developed from the pressure-volume-temperature correlations by thermodynamic calculations and only a relatively few experimental data are available to check these calculated values. The calculations from pressure, volume and temperature are likely to lead to large errors in the calculated enthalpy and vapor-liquid equilibria. Thus, in the calculations of enthalpies, slopes of the pressure-volume-temperature data are employed, and determining these slopes can greatly amplify small errors in the original data. In the vapor-liquid equilibria calculations it is necessary to have the pressure-volume-temperature relations of the mixture, and the latter propertics are much more questionable than those of pure components, particularly in the critical region. THE various theories that have been advanced to explain or predict the conditions under which a metal fractures may be divided into two categories: First, there are the macroscopic theories generally used in engineering practice. These are empirical in nature and limited in application. For example, the maximum normal stress criterion, which is quite satisfactory for a mild steel in simple tension at atmospheric pressure, no longer suffices when this steel is pulled under hydrostatic pressure.2 In all of these empirical theories, the critical condition characteristic of the material and of the loading conditions must be obtained experimentally. Secondly, there are the theories based on interatomic forces,3,4 or on the energy required to form new surface.5,6 These have all dealt with the theoretical evaluation of the tensile stress necessary to bring about rupture in a purely brittle manner; that is, without plastic flow preceding fracture. All of these attempts have led to values of the tensile strength of crystals or of polycrystalline bodies that are 100 to 1000 times higher than observed values. On this account, it has been thought necessary by some investigators to conceive of a microcrack structure or distribution of flaws throughout the specimen such that the resulting stress concentrations provide the factor necessary to bring about agreement between calculation and experiment. It has been pointed out by several observers7 that this point of view is highly unrealistic, in that the weakening effect of these flaws or microstructures must be very uniform from specimen to specimen, since the fracture stresses found for various specimens of the same material tested under similar conditions are so - nearly constant. Furthermore, since calculations based on atomic forces or atomic energy are for purely brittle fracture, a condition probably never satisfied in tests, agreement is hardly to be expected. Thermodynamic Theory Of Fürth In order to resolve this apparent discrepancy between the theoretical cohesive strengths and the observed fracture strengths, Fürth8 advanced a thermo- dynamic theory of the tensile strength of isotropic bodies based on work of Born9 relating to the melting of crystals. Assuming an isotropic material free from imperfections and flaws, behaving elastically up to the breaking point, and assuming a connection between rupture and the melt- ing phenomenon, Fürth obtains an expression for the rupture stress u, in the form [ ] where Q is the melting energy per unit mass, ? is the density, and µ is Poissons’ ratio. The: volatility of a motor fuel is an index to its quality and to the satisfaction that will attend its use as an internal combustion engine fuel. Natural gasoline is concentrated volatility; threfore, it is quite natural that the most important market for natural gasoline should be for blending with less volatile refinery gasolines. Progress in the art of manufacturing natural gasoline, particularly in fractionation, which has made possible the elimination of the fixed gases and lighter hydrocarbons having a tendency to gasify at atmospheric pressure and temperature, has made it possible and desirable for refiners to utilize an ever-increasing percentage of natural gasoline in their finished product. This, in turn, has enabled the industry at large with each succeeding year to supply to the consuming public a better grade of gasoline. While cracking processes and improved fractionation in refinery operation have resulted in higher yields of gasoline per barrel of crude oil refined, natural gasoline has also played a large part in this respect because it has enabled the refiner to cut deeper into the crude and still maintain proper standards of volatility by blending natural gasoline with the product from his stills. There is, of course, with even the present improved grades of natural gasoline, a limit to the percentage that may properly be used. This percentage varies with different grades of crude oil, varies according to the facilities employed at the refinery and varies according to the grade of motor fuel manufactured; therefore it is not possible to say that for a certain predetermined amount of motor fuel to be manufactured in a given area, a certain definite amount of natural gasoline will be required. It is, however, generally conceded, and statistics bear out the statement, that the average gallon of motor fuel sold in this country contains approxi-matcly 11 per cent. of natural gasoline. Isolated cases may be found where in a very few refineries during certain seasons no natural gasoline is used, while in other plants as high as 35 per cent. and 40 per cent, natural gasoline is used in certain grades of motor fuels. Phase relationships in the system Cr-Si have been established based on the melting point, X-ray, metallo-graphic, and DTA studies. The three intermediate phases, Cr3Si, Cr5Si,, and CrSi,, melt congruently at 177V ± I@,Cr3Si, 1680"i 20°, and 1490" *20°C, respectively, while the fourth intermediate phase CrSi, melts peritectically at 1413" i 5°C to Cr5Si3 and a melt containing 51 at. pct Si. The temperatures and compositions of the four eutectic isotherms occurring in this system are given below: DTA and metallographic evidences indicate that Cr5Si, undergoes a phase transformation at 1505" i20°C. The high-temperature form of this phase could not be retained by the quenching techniques used in this study. TECHNOLOGICAL interest in the developing of composite systems, consisting of Sic on the one hand as a fiber-reinforced material and metallic substances such as chromium, nickel, or Cr-Ni alloys as a binding agent on the other hand, stimulated the present investigation of phase relationships in the binary system Cr-Si. Earlier works concerning this system have been evaluated and summarized by ansen and Anderko.' Their phase diagram was based mainly on the works of Kieffer, Benesovsky, and schroth2 and Kurnakov.~ According to these authors, the three intermediate phases Cr3Si, CrSi, and CrSi, all melt congruently at approximately 1730°, 1600°, and 1550°C. However, they did not agree on the compositional stability of the fourth intermediate phase between Cr3Si and CrSi. Later Parthe, Nowotny, and schmid4 determined the structure of this phase to be tetragonal T-1 type using the single-crystal method, and concluded that this phase had a formula of Cr5Si3. Since the compilation of Hansen and Anderko,' a new phase diagram for the system Cr-Si has been proposed by Elliott5 based on the works of Goldschmidt and rand,' Guseva and ~vechkin,~ and Trusova, Kuzev, and Ormont8 and the earlier works quoted by Hansen and Anderko.' According to this proposed phase diagram, all four intermediate phases have large ranges of homogeneity and all melt congruently. More recently, Svechnikov, Kocherzhinskii, and yupkog studied the system Cr-Si by the DTA-method. According to their findings, the three intermediate phases, Cr3Si, Cr5Si3, and CrSi,, melt congruently at 1700°, 1720°, and 1475"C, respectively, while the fourth intermediate phase, CrSi, melts peritectically at 1475°C to Cr5Si3 and a melt containing 50 at. pct Si. The temperatures and compositions of the four eutectic isotherms were found to be: In view of the discrepancies existing in the literature concerning the system Cr-Si, it was decided to rein-vestigate the phase relationships in this system. EXPERIMENTAL a) Starting Materials. Chromium disilicide and chromium or silicon powders were used in the present study to prepare the melting point and DTA samples. CrSi, was obtained by directly reacting cold-pressed elemental powders in an atmosphere of Hz at a temperature of about 1250°C. Chromium powder, purchased from Stark Chemical Co., had the following impurities in ppm: Fe, 200; Mg, 1000; and 0, 250; while silicon powder, purchased from the Welded Carbide Co., had the following impurities in ppm: Ca, 700; and Fe, 3500. b) Melting-Point Determination and Differential Thermal Analysis. Cylindrical melting-point samples of approximately 13 mm in diam and 30 mm in length with a rectangular groove in the center were prepared by hot-pressing of well-mixed powder mixtures in graphite dies. Before the melting-point determination, the hot-pressed samples were ground on a sand paper to remove any minute surface contamination of graphite. A small hole of 1 mm in diam, drilled on the center portion of the samples, served as a blackbody cavity for the temperature measurements. DTA samples approximately 13 mm in diam and 15 mm in length were prepared in a manner similar to the melting-point samples. Melting points were determined using the Pirani technique under a helium atmosphere of 40 psi. The design, performance, and operation of this apparatus have been described in detail by Rudy and ~ro~ulski.'~ The temperature measurements were carried out with a calibrated disappearing-filament-type micro-pyrometer. The measured temperature was corrected for losses from the quartz window of the melting-point furnace and for deviations from blackbody conditions of the observation hole. The procedure for temperature correction has also been previously described." The DTA method of Heetderks, Rudy and Eckertl' was also used to check any phase transformations of selected alloys in the system Cr-Si. This paper presents evidence of the general occurrence of methane in a large number of the coal fields of the United States and substantiates the apparent unnecessary differences in the ventilation requirements and codes in the various states, as was brought to the attention of the Committee on Mine Ventilation of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers at its Pittsburgh meeting in October, 1925, by J. A. Garcia. The data in his report have been compiled from the files of the Gas Laboratory of the Pittsburgh Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines and represent samples collected throughout the various states and submitted for analysis by its engineers, also by mine operators and State mining departments, since 1911. Several thousand analyses were available but most of them were rejected because they represented abnormal conditions, undefined place of sampling, special investigations, or duplications in the same mine. Only those samples were included which, without reasonable doubt, were ascertained to fall within three major classes, namely, main return, air splits, and face and rooms of live workings. In the case of air splits, and face and room samples, only the one which contained the highest percentage of methane found in a given mine was taken. OCCURHENCE OF METHANE IN COAL MINES OF THE UNITED STATES Obviously it is not feasible to present the detailed analytical data here and accordingly these data have been compiled into groups in a manner which it was thought would bring out clearly their significance. These are shown in Table 1 which includes the analyses of 310 samples of return air of approximately the same number of coal mines in 19 states. Because of changes in ownership and names the exact number could not be ascertained. The table also includes 337 samples from air splits and 263 from the face and rooms of some of the same mines represented by return air samples and from other mines in these states. A total of more than 400 mines are represented by Table 1.

During 1938, Colombia witnessed greater activity in oil prospecting and development than in any previous year in its history; more wells were drilled, more potential production established, more geological and geophysical work was accomplished, and more leases and concessions were acquired. Many companies, including the Texas, Socony Vacuum, Richmond (subsidiary of the Standard Oil of California), the Shell, and Tropical, contributed to this activity. Probably the most noteworthy development was in connection with the Barco Concession, which forms part of the Maracaibo Basin in eastern Colombia, adjacent to the Venezuelan frontier. There a great deal of preparatory work was accomplished in addition to camp and other construction, 20 producing wells were drilled and work was begun on the construction of a 12-in. pipe line to transport the oil to the port of Covenas, a distance of 260 miles. It is reported {hat 58,000 bbl. daily initial production was established during the year and is awaiting an outlet through this pipe line. Leasing and exploratory operations in Colombia continued active throughout the year; applications were made for concessions covering more than 1,100,000 acres of national lands and, in addition, leases were taken up on large areas of privately owned lands. The purpose of this article is to describe several types of borehole lining in common use, and especially to offer a relatively new means of reducing the expense of maintaining boreholes where they are subjected to corrosive action of water flowing either inside or outside of their casing. In the Anthracite region of Pennsylvania, boreholes are used for many purposes, the principal ones being: openings between the surface and underground workings through which are passed steam, water and compressed-air lines, ropeways from surface hoists to underground rope haulages, conduits for electric power and signal lines, water-discharge lines from underground pumping stations, and inlets to mine workings for flushing material. Linings for Boreholes The inadequacy of steel pipe for use in boreholes has long been recognized. Various substitute materials have been tried, including screw-joint cast-iron pipe (Fig. I). Cast-iron pipe, while very effective as a discharge line for acid water (mine water) being pumped to the surface, is not so effective when serving as a conduit for silt and crushed rock being flushed underground for filling mine voids. Terra cotta pipe (Fig. 2) has been used in boreholes, and lasts a long time if the glazed inner surface of the pipe remains intact. Its installation in a borehole is very difficult and is recommended only where it is certain that there will be no subsidence of the surrounding territory. Accessibility in order properly to join each section of the pipe is essential to a satisfactory job. In large water holes, where it is possible to lower a man into the hole for sealing the joints of the pipe, glazed terra cotta pipe has been used successfully for delivering mine water from pumps in the mines. For large holes used for flushing refuse into mine workings where the surface wash is shallow, standard paving brick have been used to form a tube through the wash to the bedrock. These brick are laid radially, backed by common brick and cobbles laid in cement. It is obvious that the shaft through the wash must be large enough to permit a man to work in it. The flushing material is carried through bare rock from the juncture at bedrock to the openings underground. This plan has been used particularly where a cast-iron surface line is laid upon the surface to carry the flushing material from the breaker to the hole, and down the hole continuously, with no opening to the air at the top of the hole, thereby eliminating the necessity of an attendant at this point (Fig. 3). Another similar type of borehole lining is constructed of hexagonal pieces of vitrified brick (Fig. 4). This type requires a steel drive pipe through the surface wash large enough to provide a finished tube of the desired size surrounded by a brick wall about 4 in. thick. The special bricks are laid in cement, six to a circle, around a lubricated pipe used as a form, and lowered in sections inside the large drive pipe; the bottom section is seated in a socket drilled in the solid rock, having the same inside

THE iron ores of the Marquette region are mostly extracted in open excavations; hence the process is more properly quarrying. Several attempts at underground work have been made, which have not, on the whole, been successful. The Edwards mine has been almost entirely wrought by candle-light. The slate ore pit, NO. 1, of the New England mine, is now worked in the same way, as is also the Pioneer furnace pit of the Jackson mine. The Champion mine was opened systematically for underground work, with two levels, 60 feet apart, and three shafts at distances apart along the bed of 200 feet; but this idea has been practically abandoned, the greater part of the ore in that mine being now taken out in open pits. Several other mines have occasionally worked underground stopes, but only temporarily; if such stopes could not be opened out to daylight, they have usually been abandoned. In brief, it may be said that no considerable amount of ore has as yet (1870) .been extracted underground in the region, and of that so mined very little has been taken out at a profit; and I may add that it seems to be the belief of the most experienced mining men that this state of things will hold for some time to come for reasons which will appear. Nearly the same remarks may be applied to the mines of the Iron Mountain region, Missouri, the ores of which are very similar in character to those of Marquette. Some of the New York and New Jersey magnetic deposits are wrought open, but this is the exception, underground mining there being the rule. The following brief sketch of the geological structure of the Marquette deposits will indicate some advantages of the method of mining employed. The iron-bearing (Huronian) series of rocks, are stratified beds, the principal ore formation being overlaid by a quartzite, and underlaid by a diorite, or greenstone.
