THE principal producing areas of fire clay in Missouri are: (I) the east central district, which includes Audrain, Callaway, Montgomery, Warren, and Boone Counties [ ] (Fig. I); (2) the St. Louis district, which includes St. Louis and St. Louis County; (3) the north central Ozark district, which includes Franklin, Gasconade, Osage, Maries, Phelps, and Crawford Counties. [ ] Most of the semiplastict fire clay is found in Audrain, Callaway, Montgomery and St. Louis Counties, and in St. Louis. Flint fire clay is found in Callaway, Audrain, and Montgomery Counties and in most of the north central Ozark district. High-alumina [ ] diaspore clay is found only in the north central Ozark district, except a few deposits found in Montgomery County. This paper is concerned with the semiplastic fire clay that occurs in the east central Missouri district near Mexico, Audrain County, Missouri, which is mined by the open-pit method as practiced by the A. P. Green Fire Brick Co. About one-fourth of the semiplastic fire clay in that district is mined in shaft mines, and three-fourths in open pits.

OF late considerable experimental and theoretical interest has been shown in the rates of transformation from a single phase, usually a supercooled solid solution, into one or more phases. Such reactions may involve both diffusion and transformation of the major constituent, as in iron alloys, or it may simply involve diffusion, as in superstructure formation and in age-hardening systems. Most of the work has been confined to ferrous alloys1-9† although two investigations have been made on copper alloys 10-11. That such work may be of considerable practical importance has been demonstrated by Bain12, by the workers at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institut für Eisenforschung13, 14, and by the everyday use of precipitation and age-hardening principles15. Experiments in this country have generally followed Davenport and Bain's technique of rapid supercooling followed by isothermal treatment. In Germany16, 17 the work has been extended to the study of the influence of accurately controlled and measured rates of cooling. The work on steel indicates that there are two subcritical temperature ranges where reaction starts sooner after quenching and proceeds at a more rapid rate than at other temperatures. At subcritical temperatures above Ar" where reaction is dependent upon atomic migration there is a period of time of which the length depends upon the alloy content and the temperature, before which no reaction has been detected. INTRODUCTION CIVIL engineers are primarily interested in maximum core recovery. This is even more important in foundation work than in mining investigations where sludge samples are of some value. The soft materials, such as clay, gouge, or partially decomposed seams that are most readily ground up or washed away, are the materials that usually have the greatest influence on foundation and leakage conditions. Undisturbed samples of such materials should be obtained for detailed geological examination and laboratory tests. Therefore the attainable goal of sampling in connection with foundation investigations is the recovery of 99.9 pct of undisturbed core. FACTORS CAUSING CORE LOSSES The principal factors contributing to core losses are: (I) coring badly fractured or very soft material; (2) use of improperly designed coring equipment, including the use of bits of too small a diameter; (3) lack of the proper training and attitude on the part of the drillers and pertinent technical information on the part of the supervising personnel. Little can be done about the character of the material being cored but the other two factors contributing to unsatisfactory performance can be corrected. Although the title of this paper is the improvement and standardization of core barrels, it is believed that the drillers' shortcomings and the lack of pertinent technical literature are more detrimental to good core recovery than either of the other factors. USES FOR LARGE DIAMETER CORE BARRELS It is well known that the use of larger diameter bits and core barrels generally produce better cores, particularly when sampling soft or broken material. The use of larger and larger bit diameters and the insistence on better core recovery is well demonstrated by the change in practices of the various districts of the Corps of Engineers. Today NX core is the smallest diameter commonly permitted for investigational work and the more active districts are using coring bits up to 6 in. in diameter, as well as 36 and 40-in. calyx rigs. The latter size has proved to be just as economical because it provides more room for core removal and cleanup operations. The use of large diameter cores to replace the driving and jacking methods of obtaining soil samples is also increasing. The 5 7/8-in. Denison sampler, developed by H. L. Johnson to obtain samples from soft formations, is one example. The principal uses for bits larger than NX are: sampling soils and semi-consolidated rock; sampling decomposed rock or rock with soft seams; sampling concrete; obtaining samples for laboratory tests; drilling drainage holes, and other miscellaneous work. INTRODUCTION The project financing described elsewhere in this book is available to major mining companies on the basis of a strong balance sheet, a significant equity position in a project of proven feasibility, and a demonstrated ability to bring ore deposits into production. "Junior" mining companies, which are most active in Canada, Australia, the US, and South Africa, by definition do not meet these criteria. In many cases, junior companies will need to raise money simply to cover the costs of acquiring and exploring potential deposits. In what follows we will look primarily at junior financing practices in the US and Canada, although the same general principles will apply in Australia and South Africa. The principal vehicles for junior mine company financing are limited partnerships, the private placement of securities and debentures, and public offering of securities, and property deals with stronger companies, in the form of leases, earn-ins and co-ventures. The cost (in terms of dollars or equity) and, to some extent, the applicability of using these difficult approaches varies with the stage of development of the property and with the corresponding degree of risk to the investor. Much junior company fund raising is, in fact, "interim" financing in that it allows the company to improve its properties and develop its assets to the stage where more favorable financing arrangements may become available. Companies will therefore often use several of the approaches described above during the development life of a specific property. LIMITED PARTNERSHIPS Limited partnerships and syndications are a popular way of structuring the initial private financing of mine developments because of their attractive tax consequences for the well-to-do investor. Costs of exploration and development can in many countries be passed through as deductions to the limited partners, who are thus able to gamble on a possible windfall at little real cost. In addition to private Canadian funds, much German money flowed into Canadian exploration ventures on this basis, but stopped in 1982 due to economic conditions in West Germany. In the US, recent regulations have, in the great majority of cases, taken away the ability to "shelter" income in mining limited partnerships. Deductions taken by the individual investor cannot exceed the amount of money he actually has at risk. Nevertheless, the allowable deductions are still attractive and some of the major mining companies are now beginning to look at limited partnerships as a vehicle for attracting additional exploration funding. Ranchers Exploration and Development has successfully put together several drilling funds on this basis. THE PRIVATE PLACEMENT Initial funding for the acquisition and preliminary exploration of prospects is often accomplished through a private placement of unregistered securities or, where it is not a problem to carry debt on the statement, by a private placement sale of debentures. A fledgling company wishing to do a public offering may well be advised by an underwriter to accomplish a small private placement as a precondition of the larger offering. In this way, the sale of the registered securities is not inhibited by the company starting out with a debt-ridden balance sheet and no demonstrated ability to secure the additional financing generally necessary beyond the proceeds of that offering. In the US, the securities offered in a private placement are not registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (S.E.C.) but are restricted as to their resale, and could be further restricted by a underwriting agreement

YEARS ago, when metal mining was more an adventure than a well-organized business, it was often said (with some color of truth) that unless a mine could stand bad management or mismanagement, it was not much good. Today, the natural excellencies of an ore deposit are merely a challenge to the engineers to exploit it as skillfully, as efficiently, and as profit- ably as possible. A vast amount of competent and imaginative engineering management (which includes economic analysis no less than the technologic arts of mining ore and treating it) has been required to make New Cornelia the smooth-running and successful operation that can be seen at Ajo today. New Cornelia was acquired by the Phelps Dodge Corporation when it absorbed the Calumet and Arizona Mining Company in 1931. Next to Morenci, it doubtless is the corporation's biggest asset. It in no way detracts from the achievement of Phelps Dodge engineers to say that they had an admirable ore deposit to work on. New Cornelia ore, as mined, is relatively low in grade and the deposit is by no means the largest of the Porphyries; but it has these attractive features : (1) It is peculiarly suitable for opencut mining because: (a) The overburden of waste rock lying above the ore deposit was (it has long since disappeared) almost negligible. (b) The deposit is roughly circular in horizontal section, with the horizontal dimensions four to five times as great as the maximum thickness. (Nevertheless, eventually some underground mining may be desirable.)

In this investigation, polyethylene terephthalate (Mylar) was coated with various thicknesses of a vapor-deposited silvel- precoat followed by a uapor-deposited zinc using several orders of- magnitude variation in deposition rate of both the silver and zinc. The grain size and resistivity of the zinc film was primarily a function of the silver precoat thickness (in the range of 0.001 to 10 average Agprecoat thickness) and a secondary function of the zinc film thick-ness. The silver and zinc deposition rates were found to have a minor effect on the characteristics of- the zinc film. Electron and X-ray dilffraction results slwwed that all zinc films exhibited a fiber texture mith the (0001) axes essentially perpendiculav to the platze of the film When coating nonmetallic substrates such as paper or plastics with zinc metal vapors, it is found that the zinc will not condense unless extremely high evaporation rates or very low substrate temperatures are used. In 1931, Fraser' reported a procedure whereby zinc could be made to condense on nonmetallic substrates by depositing a very thin precoat of silver. Utilizing Fraser's method, the ermans' developed a commercial process of making "metallized film" capacitors during World War 11. The metallizing process, which was introduced in the United States shortly after the conclusion of World War 11, became one of the first large-scale commercial applications of vapor-deposited metal films and remains one of the larger applications in the electronics industry. The process, as developed by the Germans, consisted of depositing a thin precoat of silver on lacquered, kraft paper followed by a conducting layer of zinc. The resulting silver-zinc film was used as the capacitor The term silver-zinc will be used throughout thiz paper to mean a metal film formed by an extremely thi layer of silver, 10A or less in average thickness, and a zinc film IOOA or more in thickness deposited on the silver film. ---. electrode with the lacquered paper being the dielectric. When polyethylene terephthalate was marketed by E. I. Du Pont Co. in the early 1950's under the trade name Mylar it was substituted for the kraft paper in many capacitor applications. Production of crude oil in Tennessee during 5945 was slightly more than 6000 bbl., the lowest figure since 1916. Approximately 5500 bbl. was produced from the "Mississippi lime" in Scott and Morgan Counties. The remainder was from two wells each in Clay and Fentress Counties. Thirty million cubic feet of gas was marketed off the lease in Morgan County and about 10 million cubic feet was produced in the Jamestown field in Fentress County. The production of oil by counties is shown in Table 1.

By taking advantage of the fundamental difference between screening and classification—namely, that specific gravity has no effect on screening but is one of the important factors in classification—a combination of the two may be used as a process of mineral concentration. Although this fact is not new, so far as is known it has had little or no commercial application. The scheme is not presented now as a process for producing finished products but rather as a preliminary operation rejecting part of the barren material from an ore before it is subjected to more costly treatment. That is largely the function of the new heavy-media concentration processes that have been widely accepted. Original installation costs for the present sink-float processes are relatively high, however, which confines their use to operations where large tonnages are handled. Sink-float has been successful on only the relatively coarse (approximately plus 10-mesh) portion of an ore, and it is in this same range that classification screening can function most satisfactorily. Theoretically, there is no upper limit to the size of particles that can be handled in a sink-float operation, but the degree of liberation in the very large pieces usually limits this. With classification screening, particles from % to % in. would be the largest that could be handled, but the lower range could be extended somewhat below 10 mesh. In order to take full advantage of the difference in specific gravities of the minerals being separated, sorting in the classifier should be under as extreme hindered-settling conditions as possible. Laboratory tests have been made on a galena ore and on an artificial mixture of quartz and magnesite to determine the separations that may be expected. Although more than one scheme may be followed, in these tests the separations were made by cutting the underflow from the classifier as a concentrate and then screening the overflow. The screen oversize was rejected as a tailing. Classification was done in a hindered-settling teeter column and screening was done by hand, using the standard 4 2 series. The accompanying flowsheet gives the testing procedure followed.

Since the exposition of the behavior of certain iron alloys by Sykesl involving the existence of an austenite loop and the discovery of such a loop in the chrome-iron system by Bain,2 there has been much conjecture both on his part and on the part of metallurgists in general as to the exact shape and location of this loop. In previous work commercial steel has been used and the microscope has been employed to locate the critical points so that the position of the loop has been quite approximate. Numerous attempts have been made to measure the critical points of the carbon-free alloys but all of these for one reason or another have failed. A satisfactory method for studying these phenomena is presented here. MateRial The first difficulty in this study was to obtain pure chromium-iron alloys. This has been overcome by melting in a vacuum electrolytic iron and chromium analyzing 99.84 Cr, Fe and C. A pure magnesite crucible was used and the melt allowed to solidify in the crucible. A typical analysis is chromium, 10.10 per cent., carbon, 0.006 per cent., silicon and manganese nil. To overcome the problem presented by segregation, ingots were made into wire 0.04 in. in diameter. This was accomplished by hand-forging the ingots into rods, using an oxyhydrogen flame for heating, in order to avoid carbon. Subsequently the rods were swaged to wire, the heating being carried out in hydrogen. Thus local segregation was eliminated although differences in analysis between portions 50 ft. apart were noted. An electric-resistance method was first tried to determine the critical points, but due to the physical defects in the wire this failed. Bain had previously shown the presence or absence of critical points in a qualitative way by observing the sag in a catenary. The author has devised the following method which gives an accurate determination of the critical points from expansion-temperature curves of suspended wire, a special telescopic dilatometer being used for the purpose.

In 1945 tests were made in the coal washery of the Colorado Fuel and Iron Corporation, at Pueblo, Colo., to determine the value of the Humphreys spiral. So far we have demonstrated that it is of definite value to us in rewashing a portion of our table middlings; and we are fairly certain that this is not necessarily the only place in which it can be used to advantage. Because of manpower and material shortages, experimental work has been discontinued for the present. Three of the spirals are being installed for use in rewashing the middlings, and testing and experimental work will proceed when this installation is completed. All evidence secured so far points to the fact that the spiral call make an effective separation of heavy material below 8-mesh; but that it is ineffective in removing larger, heavy material. This, of course, will limit its use to fine coal or a classified feed containing no heavy material larger than 8-mesh. In considering the results of our tests, it should be noted that the feed was our table middling, and that any real separation of this material is a "moral victory)" as there is little material that could be properly called coal and practically no heavy rock, the consequence being that previous attempts to clean the middlings have not been at all successful. Several articles dealing with the spiral and its use in treating heavy minerals have already been published,' but for the benefit of those who have not seen these we include a brief description of the spiral and of the way it operates, taken from Bulletin 4 of The Humphreys Investment Co.: The Humphreys Spiral Concentrator consists of a spiral conduit of modified semicircular cross section. Ore pulp is fed to the top and, as it flows downward, the heavier particles concentrate in a band along the inner side of the pulp stream (Fig. I). Outlets for removal of products are located at the lowest points in the cross section of the conduit. Wash water, added at the inner edge of the stream, flows outwardly across the concentrate band. The width of concentrate band removed at the outlets is controlled by adjustable splitters. Concentrate is usually removed from the upper portion of the spiral and middling from the lower portion. Tailing is discharged from the lower end. Tests are usually made in closed circuit, since this provides a maximum of information with a minimum amount of sample. Fig. 2 shows the spiral set up for closed-circuit testing, and gives a good idea of the general arrangement of such an installation. The small cyclone separator is used to provide clean wash water without introducing additional water into the circuit.

The authors present a general outline of the theory and development of heavy-liquid application to mineral processing. Patent literature and processes are reviewed with special emphasis on liquid recovery systems which have been employed or proposed. Advantages and disadvantages of the process are discussed together with the recent developments which have revived interest in this old concentration method. The most important single factor in this resurgence of interest is concluded to be the narrowing gulf between chemical engineering and mineral dressing which has opened the field for new concepts of mineral plant design. A partial summary of patents on heavy liquid separations is included. In spite of the fact that heavy-liquid separation with organic liquids has been used in the laboratory for over 50 years, this process has never graduated to large scale commercial use for any extended period. However, a variation of this process, the sink-float or heavy-media separation process has found wide acceptance and is used to separate minerals from diamonds to gravel. Materials used to increase the specific gravity of the pulps used as heavy media include sand, clay, barite, magnetite, galena, hematite, atomized lead and ferrosilicon. Because of the greater ease of recovery, the magnetic materials, magnetite and ferrosilicon, are the preferred media today. In the U. S. alone, heavy-media iron ore plants with a capacity of over 10 million tons of concentrate per year are in existence. Heavy-media separation involving use of solid, inorganic particles suspended in water rapidly found a wide range of commercial use with the introduction of magnetic media. The minerals engineer is experienced in working with suspensions and quickly learned to develop and control such media at a cost compatible to the type of separation desired. The natural superiority of a heavy liquid with uniform chemical and physical properties has never been questioned since its first use in laboratory mineral separatory procedures. It offers the only method for gravity separation of fine particles of relatively close specific gravity. The most important early attempt to make heavy liquid separations commercial were made by the DuPont Co. which began experimental work on Virginia limonite in 1904. The appended "Partial Summary of Patents" compiled by W.L. O'Connell of The Dow Chemical Co. demonstrates the quantity and sequence of this work. Both inorganic and organic parting liquids were investigated and numerous patents were issued on the use and recovery of these liquids. The work culminated in the heavy liquid plant of the Weston Coal Co. at Shenandoah, Pa. Chemical engineering design of this plant was the responsibility of Francis I. and Hubert I. DuPont. Heavy-liquid separation of coal almost achieved commercial status at this plant which actually processed over 20,000 tons of coal. The liquids used were tetrabromethane, pentachloroethane and trichlo-roethylene, with liquid losses ranging from 8.9 to 12.4 oz per ton of cleaned coal. The reasons for failure of this plant are not clear but probably involved toxicity problems as well as other problems in chemical engineering. Excellent economics were reported. A more recent pilot plant was built in 1954-55 by Norris Goodwin for the Inerto Co. to treat hectorite clay. This plant employed carbon tetrachloride in jigs with liquid recovery by evaporation. Although good separation was achieved, incomplete removal of the CCl, from the clay prevented commercial operation. The only present operations known to the authors employing heavy liquids for gravity separations are limited to the use of calcium chloride in certain coal washers and bromochloromethane in a small batch operation (one ton solids per day) for the separation of beryllium metal particles from slag materials. This is not strictly a minerals beneficiation problem but it has demonstrated the feasibility of such separations. Conventional underground mapping methods and diamond drilling are being applied in a study to determine the nature of the copper ore occurrences near the footwall of the Osceola lava flow top, commonly referred to as the Osceola Amygdaloid. The work to date suggests that structures formed by relatively impermeable barriers, created by flowage and injection of still-molten lava from the interior of the flow into the solidified, brecciated crust, acted as the ore receptacles. Ascending hydrothermal fluids traveling near the footwall contact were trapped and confined in these barriers which retarded the direct upward movement of the ore fluids and caused deposition of copper. Oreshoots located near the footwall appear to have been formed spatially independently from the hanging-wall oreshoots by fluids traveling simultaneously, but along different channelways. The barrier concept, as advanced by earlier writers to explain the concentration of the ore-bearing fluids into broad shoots constituting entire ore bodies, is found to be equally as applicable for the localization of smaller oreshoots within the Osceola ore body. Recently, the Calumet Division of Calumet and Hecla, Inc. completed the unwatering of the old mine workings on the Osceola amygdaloid. Two shafts were subsequently reactivated and mining commenced on the Osceola lode after an idle period of over 20 years. Early in 1961, the Calumet and Hecla Geological Dept. was assigned the task of locating additional reserves. Accordingly, an intensive mapping and underground diamond drilling program was initiated. Except for a very few years following the first mining on the amygdaloid, the Osceola lode had never been a high grade producer. It was, therefore, recognized from the onset that a concentrated effort would have to be made by the mining, milling, and geological departments to insure success of the project. Company reports contained many references to ore that had been located near the footwall of the Osceola amygdaloid. Information concerning the grade of this ore was meager, but it was known that at least some was very rich. In contrast to ore that occurred near the hanging-wall, however, the footwall copper did not appear to have a systematic distribution and a large amount of poor rock had to be removed in developing this ore. This, of course, resulted in high development costs and discouraged any extensive mining of footwall ore. The possibility of more continuity than had previously been suspected was recognized by other workers, in particular Dr. T. M. Broderick, formerly Chief Geologist of Calumet and Hecla, who suggested attempts be made on a trial basis to follow the footwall contact with the main development drift. As most mining was done on the Osceola lode before a geological department had been established by the company, and almost all of these openings are now caved, very little information concerning the geology of footwall ore was available. It was, therefore, decided that the first step in the exploration program would be to become familiar with footwall ore occurrences by mapping the geology as the openings were driven. It was possible that a mapping program would reveal the features that controlled the localization of the ore. Furthermore, if it could be shown that footwall ore was more continuous, or if its distribution was more systematic than generally believed, it would be possible to produce a high grade ore that could be blended with the lower grade hanging-wall ore. In connection with the geological program, the Michigan College of Mining and Technology Geophysical Dept. under the direction of Professor Lloyal Bacon, is making a geophysical study of the problems of locating footwall ore by electrical methods. THERE have been no publications on the wire texture, on the cold-rolled sheet texture, nor on the recrystallized sheet texture of vanadium. Since it has a body-centered cubic structure, it would be expected to show strongly preferred orientations such as are found in iron' and molybdenum.' The wire textures of body-centered cubic iron,3 tungsten," molybdenum,5 antalum,6 iobium,6 and brass6 have been found to have [110] directions lying parallel to the wire axis. Wires of iron,' containing 1.95 pct V or 1.95 pct Si,7 and steel8 retain their texture upon recrystallization. Molybdenum9 and tungsttln' wires retain their texture after recrystallization at low temperatures. A [loo] recrystallization texture has been reported for mo1ybdenum9 and for a Fe-Ni alloy (53 atomic pct Ni).10 The cold-rolled sheet texture for iron,' mild steel," and molybdenum chiefly one in which the [110] directions lie parallel to the rolling direction and the (100) planes lie parallel to the rolling plane with a deviation from this position chiefly about the rolling direction as an axis. This paper presents the cold-rolled and the re-crystallized wire textures, and the cold-rolled and the recrystallized sheet textures for vanadium. The results show that the textures in vanadium are not significantly different from those reported for other body-centered cubic metals. The vanadium used in this investigation was the so-called "ductile" vanadium which has a nominal composition within the following limits:12 0, 0.05 to 0.12 pct; H, 0.001 to 0.004; N, 0.02 to 0.04; C, 0.03 to 0.07; and V, 99.8 to 99.9. The wires were formed by rolling annealed rods of 0.280 in. diam to 0.028 in., a reduction in diameter of 90 pct. The wires were then electrolytically etched to 0.005 in. diam and used as such for specimens. Annealed sheet was reduced 95 pct in thickness from 0.100 to 0.005 in. with a two-high, 4-in. diam mill using reductions no greater than 10 pct per pass. In order to avoid temperature effects, the sheet was allowed to cool between passes. X-ray specimens were made in the form of posts from the sheet. The sheet was mounted in a fixture and the edges were polished using metallographic technique. Each edge was alternately polished and etched during the last stages in order that all worked material would be removed. These post specimens were approximately square in cross-section. The specimens to be recrystallized were wrapped in tantalum foil, sealed in evacuated quartz tubes, and annealed at 1600°F. The X-ray data were obtained from transmission shots made with a 0.030 in. pinhole camera, and molybdenum radiation with a zirconium filter inserted between the specimen and film. The grain size was sufficiently small in both the cold-worked and recrystallized material to give satisfactory results with the specimens stationary. The explosibility of a dust is favored by its fineness and content of volatile combustible matter; its explosibility is decreased by its moisture and ash content. The explosibility of a dust can be reduced by admixture of either inert dust or water. The major effect of both the inert dust and water lies in their heat capacity; they absorb the heat of the explosion flame until the temperature of this flame drops below the ignition temperature of the explosive heat. The amount of inert dust necessary to make an explosive dust non-explosive can be calculated from its proximate analysis. FOREWORD LARGE-SCALE testing of the explosibility of coal dust as conducted by the Bureau of Mines in its Experimental Mine involves a large initial investment, and a high charge for maintenance and conduct of the test; in addition the work is necessarily slow because of the time required for the preparation of the tests and the cleaning and repairing of the mine after each test. These tests have been made along practical mining lines that admit of a range of mixtures of dust varying from 5 to 10 per cent. and with gas as low as 0.5 per cent. increments. Because of the time and expense involved, efforts have been made to devise a type of gallery for laboratory use in which the results obtained in the Experimental Mine may be correlated as an aid in a study of dusts, the explosibility of which might be approximately determined quickly and at a minimum of expense. The explosibility of coal dust has been studied by a number of European investors, using small laboratory devices; among these may be mentioned the experiments con¬ducted by Galloway, Vital, Hall and Clark, Abel, Mallard and Chatelier, Thorpe, Bedson and Widdas, Engler, Holwartz and Meyer, and Taffanel, results of whose experiments have been reviewed by the Bureau of Mines., The Bureau has conducted many tests with the Frazer-Clement2 apparatus, which gives the pressures set up when the dust cloud within is, ignited with a platinum coil or tube, heated to different temperatures, but for these tests the sample must be especially prepared as to size (200 mesh) and must be dry. In spite of an increase of 7 cents per barrel in the posted price of oil for the Panhandle field effective June 16, 1943, there was less drilling during 1943 than ir, any of the several previous years. The drilling statistics are compiled as Table 2 and show the material increase in the percentage of the total number of field wells completed as dry holes. This increase suggests that the productive area of the field is largely drilled up on the well-spacing pattern now followed and that new discoveries will be required to permit any important new activity in the area. The fact that only four wildcats were drilled in the area during the year indicates that some new prospecting technique or some ncw point of view is required to stimulate exploration. No new producing areas were discovered during 1943 and no additions to oil reserves were made through extensions or discovery 'of new pays. Accordingly, the proven reserves in the area declined by the amount of the production, or nearly 31 million barrels. These results of drilling are similar to those obtained during 1942, whcn no new oil areas were discovered as a result of wild-catting, a total of five wildcat wells in 1942 resulting in four failures and one gas-fieid discovery of undetermined merit. sion.
