Results are given of scleroscope and Brinell tests on specimens of cast 10-per cent. aluminum bronze, quenched and reheated at various low temperatures. The scleroscope was not found as reliable as the Brinell machine for measuring the hardness, for the size of the piece tested seemed to affect the scleroscope results. The maximum hardness was obtained by quenching and reheating to between 315° and 370° C. Softening was produced by reheating above 370° or 400° C. A series of polished and etched microsections showed a more reddish color in those that had been reheated above 400° C., and a change in microstructure above 500° C. IT HAS been known for many years that the alloy containing 90 per cent. copper and 10 per cent. aluminum can be hardened, like steel, by quenching from a suitable temperature, and that the hardened alloy can be softened again by annealing or drawing the temper. It does not seem to be generally appreciated, however, that the effect of the first slight reheating after quenching is actually increased hardness, the softening effect not taking place until a certain temperature of "drawing" has been exceeded. This paper gives the results of a few experiments on various specimens of cast 10-per cent. aluminum bronze, quenched for maximum hardness, and subsequently annealed at different temperatures. The hardness measurements were made with both a scleroscope and a standard Swedish Brinell machine; some peculiarities of the scleroscope test on this material are described. The author is not aware of many previous investigations of the hardness of this alloy when quenched and drawn, but two important papers on the subject should be mentioned. The earliest was by Portevin and Arnou,1 in which it was stated that tempering quenched 10-per cent. aluminum bronze at 400° C. increased the hardness as compared with the quenched untempered alloy and that reheating above that temperature was necessary to obtain any softening effect.

TROUGHS or launders are probably the oldest machines used for ore. concentration, and their development was suggested no doubt by the natural segregation and stratification of materials that take place in the bed of a stream. Trough washers for coal cleaning were first used in France and Germany about one hundred years ago and have been used in some form or other ever since. The early launders were intermittent or batch machines, and only comparatively recent developments have made them continuous. The chief disadvantage of early launder systems as applied to coal has been that when a satisfactorily clean: coal was produced the loss of good coal in the refuse was excessive. Other disadvantages have been the large quantities of water and the great lengths of troughs necessary to treat moderate tonnages of feed. One of the most widely used types of trough washers is the Rheolaveur, which has been developed in the last 25 years. Fig. 1 shows a more or less standard arrangement for fine coal. In this there are four troughs placed one below the other and sloped a few degrees from the horizontal. Rheo-boxes or draws are provided at intervals in the bottom of the trough for the removal of material deposited from the stream. These draws are spaced substantial distances apart. Some of the rheo-boxes are provided with upward currents of water to modify the horizontal current stratifica-tion. In operation it is the function of the first two troughs to remove all refuse material and permit only clean coal to be discharged over the end. In order to accomplish this, large quantities of coal are drawn through the rheo-boxes. The third and. fourth troughs are used to recover the coal discharged through the boxes of the first two troughs as a middling product and to discharge a clean refuse. The middlings are returned to the first launder and are usually about equal to 40 per cent of the raw coal being fed to the launder.

Having suggested magmatic waters as the probable agents of vein- and ore-deposition in Southeastern Alaska in a paper entitled, The Geology of the Treadwell Ore-Deposits,' it is with particular interest that I note Mr. W. Lindgren's application of the hypothesis of igneous emanations to the gold-quartz veins of Victoria and of California. After describing the similarities of the veins and of the changes in the wall-rock due to the action of vein-waters in the two regions considered by him, Mr. Lindgren formulates the hypothesie that the veins of this type " have been deposited chiefly by ' eruptive after-effects ;' in other words, chiefly by hot ascending waters originally contained in the granitic magma and relased from it by decreasing pressure, due to its irruption into the upper parts of the litho-sphere. It is quite possible that atmospheric waters may have played a certain part by aiding the precipitation and by effecting certain forms of concentration in the deposits." There are many reasons for extending this hypothesis to southeastern Alaska. This region and the Sierra Nevada belt of California are undoubtedly parts of one geologic province, throughout which the main events of geologic time are evidenced by identical or closely similar records in the rocks. Our knowledge of the former region is still fragmentary, to be sure; but the origin-dates of the most prominent features of geology have been located in the time-scale, and found to correspond completely with the red-letter dates in the Californian record. An analysis was made of the influence of floating molten zone traversal on the purification of tungsten rods and the effect of this purification on the brittle -to-ductile transition temperature. The major impurities detectable in the original rods, i.e., molybdenum and oxygen, were reduced by zone refining from 30 to 3 Ppm. Changes in the trace amounts of other impurities could not be quantitatively determined since they were below the limit of detection. Tensile tests on 3-mil wires, drawn from these rods and recrystallized to 17,000 grains per sq mm, showed a transition temperature of 60°C for the zone Purified and 175°C for the original material. 1 HE brittle-to-ductile transition temperature is manifest mainly in the bee metals, iron,' molybdenum, chromium,3 tungsten,4 and niobium. Since many of these metals cannot be fabricated at room temperature in a commercially pure annealed poly-crystalline state, a considerable amount of work has been done on evaluating the influence of purification on the transition temperature in order to determine indirectly whether the fabricability of these metals can be improved by removing impurities. Smith and Rutherford8 showed that the transition temperature of iron is lowered significantly by zone purification. Working with chromium, Edwards, Nish, and wain7 found also that purification appreciably lowered the transition temperature. A similar evaluation has so far not been reported for tungsten, probably because of the difficulties in obtaining tungsten in a purified polycrystalline state. carlson8 and, more recently, schadler9 have purified tungsten rods by floating zone traversal, but after zone traversal, their rods were single crystals. To obtain high-purity polycrystalline tungsten, a technique has to be round for transforming the zone-purified single crystal material into a suitable polycrystalline structure. The purpose of this investigation was to obtain zone-purified tungsten in a suitable polycrystalline state and then to evaluate the effect of zone purification on the transition temperature.

DURING the past few years, a considerable tonnage of ilmenite has been produced as a byproduct of a monazite dredging operation and stockpiled near Boise, Idaho. This ilmenite has not been marketed because of the long distance from ilmenite-consuming areas and its comparatively low TiO2 content. Production of monazite from the alluvial sand deposits of Idaho is a mar- ginal venture when it is the only marketable product, and it will be necessary to establish a byproduct market before the operation becomes economically stable. Early in 1954, the Bureau of Mines Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory at Albany, Ore., conducted a series of tests which demonstrated that arc furnace smelting could be utilized to produce commercial quality pig iron and a high titanium content slag from these ilmenites. Additional studies showed that the slag chlorinated readily to produce a satisfactory yield of TiCl4. The investigation was carried out by two research teams. INSULATING materials include a wide variety of nonmetallic mineral products such as exfoliated vermiculite, expanded gypsum, 85 pct magnesia, diatomite, asbestos, perlite, cellular glass, pumice, silica aerogel, expanded aggregates and mineral wool. Except mineral wool, most of these products, or the materials from which they are manufactured, are described in other chapters of this book. PROPERTIES OF INSULATING MATERIALS The insulating properties of the materials considered in this chapter result in general from entrapping extremely small pockets of air in such a manner that heat is not transferred by convection. The minimum heat conductivities of such insulating materials are slightly greater therefore than the conductivity of still air. In addition, conductivity varies with the overall density of the material, the temperature range in which the measurements are made, and the form into which the material is fabricated. However, the numerical value of heat conductivity should not be the sole criterion of an insulating material; for a particular application it may be advantageous to use a material of somewhat higher conductivity in order to secure other desirable engineering properties. This is especially true with certain materials that are used because of their refractoriness. Comparative insulating values of some commonly used insulating materials are shown in Table 1. In comparing the values presented in this table it should be borne in mind that heat conductivity varies with the mean temperature, with the overall density, and with the amount of moisture present. THE Oklahoma legislature recently passed a bill providing for "the creation of an oil and gas department under the jurisdiction of the Corporation Commission, authorizing the. Corporation Commission to appoint a chief oil and gas conservation agent, and conferring exclusive jurisdiction on the Corporation Commission in reference to the conservation of oil and gas, and the inspection of gasoline and oil, the product of crude petroleum, and repealing all acts or parts of acts in conflict therewith and declaring an emergency." Some of the functions of the new bureau include the receiving and filing of all well logs and the direction and supervision of plugging all abandoned oil and gas wells under rules prescribed by the Corporation Commission. The two leading petroleum-producing States of the country, Oklahoma and California, have now established oil and gas bureaus with a staff of inspectors to see that the important rules relating to the conservation of oil and gas are thoroughly enforced. The economic significance and the value of well logs in the conservation work has been recognized and the necessary legal action taken to insure and procure them. William B. Heroy, of the Government Land Classification Board, in a personal communication to the writer, says that the drilling of wells is also regulated by public authority in the Roswell artesian basin in southeastern New Mexico, where a permit must be obtained for the drilling of any well and a certified log of the well recorded with a county official. The method is said to give fairly satisfactory results. In a recent article 1 a National instead of a State Bureau was suggested for collecting and filing well logs. In discussing the paper, L. L. Hutchison characterized such a plan as impractical because the average driller or contractor will often juggle or guess at the log and will not keep the record sufficiently close or accurate, making it necessary to maintain a special man at each well for the sole purpose of obtaining

Research indicates that the cube diamond is a superior stone for drill bits. It can be oriented to combine a long cutting edge with structural strength and high resistance to wear. Test bits set with preferred orientation give double the bit life at astoundingly low diamond loss in comparison to oriented octahedral diamonds. A PROGRAM of research on the orientation of diamonds in drill bits has been under way for several years at both the United States Bureau of Mines Experimental Mine at Mount Weather, Va., and the School of Mines and Metallurgy of the University of Minnesota. Reports on past work done both in the laboratory and the field are available in the technical press.1,3,4 The results of such drilling, done under comparable conditions, show that bits having diamonds oriented in a direction that combines structural strength and greatest hardness not only can advance somewhat faster than random set bits but can do this with a unit diamond loss of 50 pct or less. Several bit manufacturers have initiated the training of diamond setters in the principles of orientation on the basis of the above-mentioned research results. The basic information on the crystallography and hardness variation of the diamond was presented in an earlier paper,' which pointed out that the diamond is several hundred times harder along certain directions and certain faces than on others. The same article discussed the drilling results obtained with a group of nine bits having octahedron diamonds set with on-point, positive (gouge) rake, and negative (drag) rake orientations. The testing of oriented cube diamonds is an extension of this research program, employing the same procedures and equipment (Hy Mac hydraulic drill unit, EXT diamond core bits, St. Cloud Pink granite) as previously described. This current work covers the test experience of seven bits set with cube diamonds running approximately 10 stones per carat. The individual stones were near perfect cubic form; hence it was simple to orient them in any desired direction. The cube is a comparatively rare crystal form of the diamond, although considerable numbers are produced from the Congo. It is understood that most of the cube diamonds are retained in Africa, where they are either used locally for diamond bit manufacture or ground up to make powder. They have been considered to be an inferior stone for drilling purposes.

LUCIEN EATON, Ishpeming, Mich.-It is not the custom in the Lake Superior region, as far as I know, to employ shot-firers. Each man, or pair of men (most of the contracts are given to two men) do their own firing; each contractor keeps his powder separately. The general custom is to distribute powder (dynamite only is used) to the mines 2 days a week. The boxes, marked with the contract number and the level, are taken underground and the men take them to their working places. They are kept in boxes, which must not be nearer together than 50 ft. and are usually away from the timber roads or traveling roads. When holes have been drilled, one man usually takes down the machine, and the other man makes up the charge. He cuts the fuse, puts in the caps, etc., at a distance from the powder box. He then carries the powder charges to the working place where both men charge the hole. They do their own firing and warn others coming from any direction that the holes are being fired.

In many of the bituminous-coal districts of this country, more than one seam of workable coal exists, and in most cases the lower seam is the more attractive, owing to either its greater thickness or its superior quality. Apprehension that the mining of a seam will destroy the availability of all overlying seams has hindered the development of many fields and has led to the unprofitable working of certain seams in order to save them from an expected total loss. The U. S. Coal & Coke Co., Gary, W. Va., was the first operator in the Pocahontas field to mine the No. 4 seam extensively, which occurs about 80 ft. above No. 3, the scam that was worked first. This was due to the fact that over large areas the upper seam was the only one of workable thickness, at that time. In two places, both seams were workable in the same area, the No. 4 being thinner and containing more impurities than No. 3 seam. In mining these areas, an attempt was made to keep the workings in the upper seam in advance of those in the lower one, and no pillar robbing was done in No. 3 seam until after pillars in that part of the upper seam directly over it had been mined. This resulted in an excessive development in the lower seam, with large areas of finished rooms and standing pillars. The top fell badly, and after a couple of years the falls became so heavy that pillar drawing was unduly expensive. To overcome this obstacle and allow No. 3 seam to be worked in some territory where No. 4 was thick, but too dirty for present use, a study was made of operating methods applied to superimposed seams in Pennsylvania and Maryland. This was started more than seven yean ago by the writer; his data, supplemented by more recent information gathered by his associates, and by two cases mentioned in recent foreign publications, form the basis of this paper. INTRODUCTION by F. R. ZACHAR and A. G. GILBERT Coal producers are not only faced with the problems of mining coal, but must also decide to what extent they can invest capital and what operating and maintenance expense they can afford, after mining, to market their product in sufficient volume and at a reasonable profit. Regardless of whether the operator is contemplating a new operation or merely considering expanding present facilities, market requirements, ability to make a product meeting requirements, probable costs and possible future changes in raw coal or finished product must be considered. In addition, such items as flow sheet, structural designs, storage facilities, etc, must be examined individually and collectively. In estimating preparation costs to meet predetermined market specifications, the operator must calculate the economics of present preparation practices to anticipate the increase to total production which results when the quality of the finished product is increased. The consumers of coal are continually seeking to obtain the best and most adaptable product for their money. Regardless of whether coal is used for coking, industrial requirements, electric power generation, domestic fuel or for other purposes, it will be scrutinized from such standpoints as delivered cost, suitability for utilization in certain equipment, ease of ash disposal, adaptability to material handling system plans and its potential for generating dust problems. Utilities, due to large capacity volume requirements, are generally in a position to select coal that will result in the lowest over-all cost per million Btu. Freight costs, paid by the utility, are important and are given utmost consideration when a coal is under consideration. Steel companies, whether producing or purchasing coking coal, are continually seeking coal that will result in lowering the cost of pig iron production. Since it is usually necessary to clean to lower specific gravities, say 1.40, to turn out a product meeting metallurgical requirements, it follows that a high ash "middling" product is created. These low quality middlings do not command a good price. Therefore, unless the metallurgical coal can command sufficient realization to carry or subsidize the middlings, the operator may be ahead economically to prepare steam coal at a higher specific gravity. While the "unit-train" rate reductions have been helpful to the economy of the coal industry, the establishment of these rates has made mandatory the installation of storage and rapid car loading facilities at mines and plants shipping utility coal (see Chapter 15). BIRINGUCCIO was born in Siena in 1480, the son of Paolo and Lucrezia di Bartolommeo Biringuccio.* He was baptized on October 20 of that year with the given names Vannoccio Vincenzio Austino Luca. His father appears to have been an architect, for in 1504 he was paid 600 scudi for his work on the walls of the Communal Palace and at the same time he was superintendent of streets for the city. The course of Biringuccio's life followed closely the checkered fortunes of the Petrucci family of Siena. A warm supporter of Pandolfo Petrucci, Biringuccio did not falter in his allegiance to the family and their party during his lifetime. It was probably to the protection and patronage of this lord that he was indebted for the opportunity to travel widely through Italy and into Germany during his early years and so to lay the foundation for the extensive knowledge of the subjects he was to describe in the Pirotechnia. In 1507, as he himself indicates (p. 48), he was 'in Friuli and. Carnia in northern Italy after having traveled in Germany,, and he also visited the, brass, works in Milan. After returning to Siena; he was sent by Pandolfo to direct the iron mines in near-by Boccheggiano. When Pandolfo died in 1512 (in which year Biringuccio's s father also died), Biringuccio continued to support the Petrucci family in the person of Pandolfo's son, Borghese, who succeeded, to the rule. Under his patronage, Biringuccio was appointed to a post in: the Armoury of the Siena Commune in 1513. In ISIS a popular uprising forced Borghese and his followers, including Biringuccio, to flee from Siena. Biringuccio and the goldsmith Francesco Castori, head of the mint, were accused of having debased the coinage alloy with the knowledge and consent of Borghese. When he failed to appear in 1516 to answer these charges-which may well have been invented by the opposing political faction-Biringuccio was declared a rebel and was exiled as a traitor to the Republic. He then traveled about Italy, was in Rome and Naples, and visited Sicily in 1517.

The flotation operation can be analyzed in terms of three groups of variables. The first, largely independent of control by the operator, embraces the fixed physical and chemical properties of the ore minerals. The second includes all chemical and physical effects imposed on an ore after mining that influence its floatability. These can be either purposefully or accidentally applied. The third embodies the flotation-machine characteristics which realize the potential floatability of selected ore minerals in terms of grade and recovery levels. The machine effectiveness thus depends not only on its own contribution, but on the prior influence of all other variables on floatability. HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT From the earliest days, flotation mills used many types of machines. Hoover 20 in 1914 mentioned as then important the Potter-Delprat tank for gas generation by acid, the DeBavay cones for skin flotation, the Elmore mixer and separation chamber for vacuum flotation, and his own modification of the Mineral Separation cell for the agitation froth process. Less important at the time were the MacQuisten tube and the Hyde cell. By 19274~ scores of machines had been developed and dozens had found their way into mills. From then on, however, under the scrutiny of competitive tests, many fell into disuse. Taggart in 19454~ classified processes broadly as skin flotation and froth flotation, dividing machines for the latter into the three categories: bubble column, pulp body, and combination.* Under 'bubble column' he listed all pneumatic, cascade, and subaeration cells; and under 'pulp body' those cells in which gas was generated by boiling, chemical action, and pressure reduction, as well as the agitation-froth type. At that writing skin flotation, the cascade machines, and all pulp body and combination machines were said to be extinct, leaving pneumatic and subaeration types dominant (u. S. practice). The process of elimination has continued to the present, with almost all pneumatic cells succumbing to the pressure of competition from subaeration machines. The only new machines to appear in recent years have been double-impeller types f and these have met with only limited acceptance.

The plastic deformation of slender single crystals of zinc has been described in some detail in the paper by Mark, Polanyi and Schmid,' which has become a classic, and also by one of the present authors in a somewhat shorter account. 2 The study of single-crystal zinc is termed classical because zinc single crystals offer, perhaps, the best material yet available for the study of atomic behavior during deformation and the effect known as "strengthening" in metals. A considerable amount of additional work has also been done on single-crystal zinc, but as it is not closely related to the present paper it will not be considered. Throughout all the former work, the mechanism of plastic deformation first described by Mark, Polanyi and Schmid has been assumed to hold. This may be said to offer the strongest confirmation of its correctness. Even so, the picture of the process has never been as completely portrayed as is desirable. The first object of the present paper is to describe work that has been done in this field, and which is even yet being carried on, in the hope that a more complete picture may be obtained. Mathewson and Phillips3 have recently described a new mechanism of the deformation of zinc based on their study of large rectangular crystals. One of their conclusions was that deformation produced twinning with a rotation of some of the basal planes into positions 94" removed from their original position; a position almost the same as that of the prismatic planes before twinning. A second conclusion was that fracture occurred along these basal planes in their new position, and, therefore that fractures previously regarded as prismatic were in reality basal. Such findings are of great significance and they raise a question as to the generality of such behavior. Professor Mathewson's opinion is that even the slender cylindrical single crystals behave in the same manner as his large rectangular crystals when strained by simple tension.

Until recently porous bronzes have found many applications for self-lubricating bearings in the automotive, electrical, household appliance and general machine industries. The bulk of an annual production of several million pounds of copper powder had gone into the manufacture of these articles, of which by now more than a billion are in service. However, the war has brought severe curtailment of these bearings because of the scarcity of the two main constituents, copper and tin. The development of substitute materials of equal or superior properties has led to a large-scale replacement by products made from iron powder. In spite of the diminished interest in powdered copper-tin alloys caused by this trend, it was believed worth while to investigate some mechanical properties of these materials as a reference base for substitutes. In addition, experiments using the hot-press method were incorporated to investigate possibilities of saving vital equipment or opening new fields of applications. It must be assumed that by this time the powder metallurgy process of making porous bronzes, a development that found its first industrial applications more than 10 years ago, is well known in engineering. The patent literature and bibliography is volu- minous, most publications referring to porous, self-lubricating bronzes, containing about 10 per cent tin and I to 5 per cent graphite, with porosities in the range of 25 to 35 per cent.l-7 The excellent antifriction properties of these bearings, caused by the uniform impregnation with oil, are dependent on the interconnection of the pores and the uniform distribution of the graphite inclusions. The sintering mechanism of porous bronze, with its structural changes during the transformation of the metal powder into the sintered bearing has been shown in colored photomicrographs by Hall.* Diffusion between copper and tin was found to begin within one minute, when tin-rich transitory phases were formed. After 25 min. a homogeneous matrix of alpha was reached for an alloy containing 9.5 per cent tin and 6 per cent graphite. Price, Williams and Garrand,9 studying certain metal powder combinations in which sintering is accompanied by the cementing action of a liquid phase, including a 90-10 bronze sintered at 925°C., have found that if the treatment is carried out within the liquidus and solidus temperature range of the system, a peculiar process of alternate solution and precipitation occurs. The particles of the major solid constituent are dissolved in the minor liquid phase, but thereafter are reprecipi-tated on certain nuclei, which develop into large grains, usually rounded.

In order to facilitate interpretation of the data in this chapter, we print the following excerpts from the Circular to Authors. The field is the unit in this tabulation. In cases of fields extending across State boundaries, such as Rodessa, it is suggested that each State author treat the section of the field in his State as a unit, and by a footnote indicate that the field extends into an adjacent State. Each space in Table 1 may represent one of four possibilities; either it is not applicable to the particular field, or the proper entry is not determinable, or the proper entry may be determinable but is not determinable from data available to the author, or the proper entry is determinable. When spaces are not applicable, leave blank; in spaces where the proper entries are determinable from data available to the author, please insert y; in spaces where the proper entries are determinable by the author, make such entries. y implies a hope that in some future year a definite figure will be available. The entry of an 0 is a positive declaration, and an important declaration where it is in order. Inability to determine precisely the correct entry for a particular space should not lead the author to insert merely y. Contributions of great value may be made by the author in many cases where entries are not subject to precise determination. In such cases the author should use his good judgment and make the best entry possible under the circumstances. For many spaces the correct entries represent the opinion of the author (for example, "Area Proved") and in such cases the entry need not be hedged to such extent as when the quantities are definite yet can be ascertained only approximately by the author. In cases under definite headings but where figures are only approximate, the author may use x. It is thought that the nearest whole numbers are sufficiently accurate for our purposes except as to percentage of sulphur in oil. If an author desires to report any other figures to tenths, he may do so. The quantity of gas produced should include, where possible, gas sold or otherwise marketed, and gas blown into the air, burned as flares or otherwise wasted. Segregation of these figures would be interesting if the authors can make such segregation. In any event, the figures should represent as nearly as possible the total quantity of gas removed from the reservoir. Under the columns on "Depth," the average depth to the top of the productive zones and to the bottom of the productive wells, when subtracted, should give the approximate thickness of the productive zone.
