As part of a continuing study of intense energy effects on the earth, such as explosive cratering for Plowshare, large scale hydro- dynamic computer codes which numerically integrate the two-dimensional mass, momenta, and energy conservation equations have been adapted for use on geological materials. Experimentally determined nonlinear dynamic equations of state and constitutive equations governing material strength are incorporated into a two-material Eulerian code, DORF. With the use of this code, impact studies have been made of projectiles with arbitrary shapes in the r,z cylindrical plane normally incident on semi-infinite half-space targets. The impact of projectiles on rocks has been studied empirically and experimentally; however, this paper employs a theoretical approach. Particular examples selected involve the impact of aluminum and iron projectiles on oil shale at velocities of 0.5 and 1.0 cm/µsec. These studies offer a quick and economic means to edit quantities unavailable in an experiment and to independently study the effect of varying parameters such as material shape, density, and strength, and impact velocity. Results reveal early time agreement with experimental high-speed photography as seen in the bowl-shaped crater and spray. Initial impact pressures at the projectile-target contact are in close accord with the one-dimensional Rankine-Hugoniot relations for the impact of dissimilar materials. These equations require local continuity of pressure and particle velocity across the interface and were found to hold locally, quite independent of projectile shape. An analytical method is developed to determine the variation of the ultimate lateral resistance of a plate in a cohesionless soil with depth. This analysis is based on a modification of Rankine's classical earth pressure theory and the theory of plasticity as applied to soils. The ultimate resistance is defined as the product of the effective stress at the midpoint of the plate, the area of the plate and a dimensionless variable termed the ultimate resistance factor. This variable has been plotted us the depth ratio: i.e., the ratio of of the depth of embedment us the height of the plate. The resistance of a plate may then be calculated using the values af the ultimate resistance factor from the chart provided or the equation may be programmed for use in an analysis of anchor systems in cohesionless soils. It is emphasized that the analysis is semitheoretical. The theory has been compared with experimental results reported in the literature and results indicate general agreement. Actual field tests are necessary to further verify this theory. INTRODUCTION With the exploration for oil offshore in waters all over the world, it is of importance to determine the behavior of the various soils in relation to their ultimate resistance to deformation. Examples of such problems are the holding capacity of anchors and the lateral resistance of piles. Very little information is available in the published literature on the design and performance of anchors, in either cohesive or cohesionless soils. The analysis developed in this report is the first step in obtaining a solution for the determination of anchor holding capacity in a cohesionless material. DISCUSSION The theory used in the analysis is based on the ultimate strength of the soil and is the maximum resistance developed by the plate against further movement. In such a state the elastic deformations are disregarded in comparison with the plastic deformations. Hence, the plate can be considered as completely rigid. The theory of plasticity determines the three unknown stresses at any point by means of two equilibrium conditions for a small earth element in combination with the failure condition. However, the exact solutions can only be carried out in a few simple cases such as, for example, when the rupture or failure lines are straight (Rankine theory) or with spiral and straight rupture lines (Prandtl theory).l Kiitter 2 derived a single equation expressing the variation of the stress in any given rupture line. To utilize this equation, it is necessary to know the stress in the rupture line at a certain point. Unfortunately, this is difficult to obtain unless the rupture line intersects the free surface at a certain angle or when the earth is cohesion-less and unloaded. A method to overcome this is to consider only the boundary conditions at both ends of a rupture line without investigating the equilibrium of the earth above the rupture line. This assumes that the rupture lines meet the surface at statically correct angles, so that boundary stresses may be determined. As Kiitter's equation furnished a relation between these stresses, the unit earth pressure may be calculated at the point where the rupture line meets the wall. Another way in which Kotter's equation may be applied is in investigating the equilibrium of a soil mass above a rupture line. This method assumes that the failure or rupture line is known and that the boundary stresses in the rupture line at the ground surface can be determined. In this case it is possible to determine the earth pressure from the equations of equilibrium.

GRAIN boundary migration in V-shaped thin specimens of high purity silver was studied. Each specimen contained two crystals having the relative orientation: (111)A/(111)B; (ll0)A/(101)B. The boundary between these two crystals varied between a continuous curved and an alternating two plane interface. The plane interfaces were oriented parallel to (101)A/(011B) and (121)A/(211)B. Traces of these planes are shown in Fig. 1. Evidently the two plane interface, although of higher area, comprises lower total interface energy than the average curved boundary it replaced. The plane boundaries were found to move at 650 °C to consume the broad segment of the V opposite to the direction of interface area and energy decrease. On investigation, using the thermal etching technique of Hendrickson and Machlin,1 it was found that the outer grain contained 8.3x108 more dislocations per cm" than the grain at the apex of the V. Consequently, the boundary moved to decrease the strain energy associated with the difference in dislocation density across the boundary. The rates of motion of specific {110} and {112} boundaries were measured during interrupted anneals at 650°C by referring the position of the boundaries to each other and a fiducial line on the specimen surface. The measured rates of motion are 0.075 and 0.025 mm per hr for the {110} and {112} boundaries, respectively. Plots of grain boundary motion vs time of annealing show straight lines with little deviation of data points from these lines.

The fundamental role of diffusion in many reactions occurring in solid metals has long been recognized, and there have been careful measurements of rates of diffusion in numerous alloy systems; but our understanding of the atomic mechanism by which diffusion occurs is scarcely in an advanced state.l-3 It is doubtful that this mechanism can ever be directly ascertained; rather, all imaginable mechanisms must be examined and the one that is in best accord with such data as can be obtained from suitably chosen experiments should be selected. Because of its relative simplicity, diffusion in a system containing only one kind of atomic species—commody called self-diffusion—is of considerable theoretical interest. It may be expected that diffusion theory will not be advanced appreciably until a wide variety of diffusion experiments—of which diffusion in a chemical concentration gradient and self-diffusion are two important types—are carefully performed and inter-compared. Aside from the purely theoretical interest in self-diffusion measurements, such studies will be of considerable engineering importance. The rate of any process in a pure metal requiring the movement of atoms, of which recrystallization and creep are two familiar examples, will be understood more readily with the aid of self-diffusion data.† Self-diffusion implies the diffusion of something into its exact counterpart; the detection of such a process is patently impossible, and it is necessary to substitute for it the diffusion of one isotope (in this case radioactive) into another isotope (in this case stable) of the same chemical element. There is, however, no reason to suppose that a radioactive atom will not diffuse at the same rate as its stable isotope, for all of the isotopes of the same element have exactly the same chemical properties; neither the difference in nuclear energy nor the difference in mass would be expected to exercise an important influence in this phenomenon. In this sense, self-diffusion may be thought of as the diffusion of radioactive atoms down a radioactivity concentration gradient, just as usual diffusion is the diffusion of one kind of atom down its chemical concentration gradient. The first measurements of self-difiusion were made by von Hevesy4-6 using the radioactive lead isotope thorium B in ordinary lead. The recent development of means for producing artificial radioactive elements has made possible similar measurements on gold,7, 8 copper,2, 9 and zinc.10, 11 Many of the data that have been obtained are rather poor, and no adequate reason has been given for their poorness; it appears, however, that the unsatisfactory results are characteristic of the particular experimental procedure employed, and not of self-diffusion measurements in themselves. The experimental technique that has yielded the poorer results is the deposition of a thin layer of radioactive atoms on the surface of a specimen and the determination of the rate of inward diffusion

This paper reviews the methods currently in use for estimating primary oil reserves and discusses the principles on which these methods are based. Particular emphasis is placed on how these methods change with the type of information available during the life cycle of an oil property. This paper contains various novel estimating methods and shortcuts heretofore unpublished. INTRODUCTION Estimating oil reserves is one of the most important phases of the work of a petroleum engineer since the solutions to the problems he deals with usually depend on a comparison of the estimated cost in terms of dollars, with the anticipated result in terms of barrels of oil. His recommendations to management regarding the best course of action are therefore normally based on the most favorable balance between these two. Specific engineering problems which require such a knowledge of recoverable oil reserves and a projection of future rates are: [a.] the exploitation and development of an oil reservoir; [b.] the construction of gasoline plants, pipelines and refineries; [c.] the division of ownership in unitized projects; [d.] the price to be paid in case of a sale or purchase of an oil property, and the magnitude of the loan which it will support; [e.] the proper depreciation rate for the investment in oil properties; and [f.] evaluation of the results of an exploration program. This discussion will be confined to the various methods and tools which are currently in use for estimating oil reserves to be obtained during the primary phase of an oil-producing reservoir and for a projection of the future production rates. Reserves which may be obtained by secondary recovery methods or fluid injection programs and gas and gas condensate reserves will not be discussed in this paper. Unfortunately, reliable oil reserve figures are most urgently needed during the early stages when only a minimum amount of information is available. Management's interest in the oil recovery from a property—aside from its use for accounting purposes—usually declines when the property approaches its economic limit, just at the time when the reliability of the estimates is at its best. To illustrate this general idea a chart is presented (Fig. 1) showing the three periods in the life of an imaginary oil property. Time is shown on the horizontal axis, while the cumulative production and estimated ultimate recovery are plotted vertically. No particular units are used and this schematical chart is not to scale. During the first period, before any wells are drilled on a property, any estimates will of necessity be of a very general nature, based on experience from similar pools or wells in the same area, and usually expressed in barrels per acre. The work of J. E. Johnson, Jr., on the effect of small amounts of oxygen in cast iron in increasing its strength and resistance to shock, is of interest from the technical and scientific standpoints. The following exposition of the theory carries Mr. Johnson's explanation further and, in my opinion, will disclose certain related phenomena and perhaps shed further light on the subject. Some facts, so novel in character as to excite incredulity, have been accepted finally by many metallurgical authorities. One of these is that oxygen to the amount of 0.060 per cent. in cast iron gives it a breaking strength of 3,500 Ib. per square inch, compared with a breaking strength of 2,500 lb. per square inch in cast iron of the same composition with respect to elements other than oxygen, but having only 0.010 per cent, oxygen. The "oxygenated" cast iron, even if made in a coke furnace, has properties equivalent to the best charcoal pig iron. Mr. Johnson has also established the fact that the variations in combined carbon cannot account for the results. By microphotographic evidence he has shown that in oxygenated cast iron the graphite particles are dense and spherical, while in well-deoxidized cast iron the graphite particles are flaky and leaf-like. It is just a matter of common sense that iron of the latter structure is much weaker than the former. The analytical and microscopical work has been done with care and there is no doubt in my mind about the accuracy of the experimental results. In this paper then, we shall consider it as accepted that small amounts (0.060 per cent.) of oxygen increase the strength of cast iron by producing a structure in which the round and solid particles of graphite are surrounded firmly by a principal matrix of ferrite. The purpose of this paper is to show that the reason why the graphite particles are round is founded on the fact that the particles of any precipitate are made denser and harder by the presence of a reagent having a solvent action on the precipitate. This can be stated as a law, although I have never seen it so given in any textbook. The Asientos-Tepezala district is in the north of the State of Aguasca-lientes, about 30 miles north of the city of Aguascalientes, the capital. The district is reached by a standard-gage railway on the west side through the junction, Rincon de Romos, which is on the main line of the National Railways of Mexico from El Paso to Aguscalientes. The terminal is Tepezala. On the east side a narrow gage connects Asientos with the junction, San Gil, on the main line, Asientos to San Luis Potosi. Tepezala on the west side of the Asientos hills is about 2 miles from Asientos on the east side. The area between the two mining centers is separated by a low subdued divide which forms the central part of the hills. The district is in a group of isolated hills surrounded by characteristic bolsón plains. The hills rise above the surrounding plains about 6500 to 10,000 ft.; the highest peak is Alta Mira. The two mining districts lie somewhat upon the flanks of the hills at about the same elevation, 7200 ft. The district is an old one and has been known since early in the 17th Century when the mines were worked by the Franciscan Monks. Their mining operations, which were limited to the oxidized ore above the water level, consisted chiefly in extracting silver from the Santa Francisca vein. To judge from the old workings and the remains of surface plant, the operations were on a large scale. By modern mining operations since about 1900, the various mines of the district have been one of the principal sourees of ore for the smelter located at Aguascalientes. Topography The topographic features of the Asientos hills are largely controlled by the character of the underlying rocks. During the Tertiary period, the entire group of hills was probably covered by extrusive volcanic material in the form of cones and lava flows. The central part of these have since been carried away by erosion, so that remnants have been left along the borders of the hills. These remnants form rather conspicuous peaks,

THE power drag scrapers and the slackline cableway excavator have been called "long-range excavators." Broadly, their field of usefulness is restricted to work in which their long range of action permits them to operate economically, and which other, possibly more conventional, excavating units cannot do. Both of these machines dig or lift material and transport it to a remote dumping point. They combine these two functions in a single machine, nearly always in a single straight-line motion. [ ] The purpose of this paper is to examine the important features that distinguish the machines in this group from each other, as well as from other groups. The Machines The "power drag scraper" is a long-range excavating machine that employs a bottomless drag scraper operated back and forth between digging and dumping points by two haulage cables. The typical arrangement is that of Fig. 1. This is the "slusher" of the underground mine, as well as the "dragline scraper" of the sand and gravel industry, and other open-pit mining operations.

In recent months, public hearings held by the Senate Subcommittee on Minerals, Materials and Fuels on the Stillwater copper-nickel complex in Montana have been reviewed at great length in the press. Although the meetings were well managed by the Subcommittee and questioning was kept in line with the aim of the hearings-namely, how can re- sources be developed in a manner compatible with the preservation of the environment-it was alarming to read the apparently uninformed and questionable arguments presented by some witnesses who were attempting to prohibit mining in the area altogether. One spokesman even went so far as to urge that mining of the area be rejected be- cause, even if the mining operation did not pollute the areas, the effluent and waste produced by the people themselves could constitute a hazard to the environment and to themselves. This, of course, would be true to a point. However, if this or similar types of reasoning were used to reject mining of a large number of orebodies in the future, how is the United States going to meet its future mineral demands and what effect could this have on the economic strength of the country? Fall of the Roman Empire An interesting article in a recent issue of Time magazine came up with a new theory to explain the fall of the Roman Empire. Claire Patterson of CalTec, during a recent study of air pollution, investigated the historical worldwide distribution of lead. As lead was a by-product obtained from silver mining during historical times, he turned his attention to studying the production of silver during those eras. He discovered a very interesting fact-that, I unless the stock of metal is continually being replenished from the mines, accidental loss diminishes a country's stockpile of silver at a rapid rate, as much as 2 per cent per year. Patterson, a geochemist, theorized that with an accidental loss rate of 2 per cent per year, if the country's silver supply dried up, the entire existing stockpile could disappear in about a century.

Discussion of the paper of GEORGE K. BURGESS and SIR ROBERT A. HADFIELD, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 98, February, 1915, pp. 455 to 468. ALBERT SAUVEUR, Cambridge, Mass.-There is a definiteness and finality in the investigations that have been conducted by the Bureau of Standards and in the method of presenting the results that is most satisfactory and refreshing.. A year ago Dr. Burgess and his co-workers investigated the question of critical points in carbonless iron, and they settled the question once for all. No one can now claim that the thermal point A2 in carbonless iron does not exist. At the past meeting of this Institute in Pittsburgh, Dr. Burgess showed the worthlessness of the shrinkage clause. To my mind after his demonstration no one can again claim that the shrinkage clause renders any service. He also showed us that it was a practicable proposition to use pyrometers in steel work in order to ascertain the finishing temperatures of rails. No one can again come before this body and make the claim that it is not a practical proposition. And now Dr. Burgess shows us that steel ingots can be made in a commercial way, practically free from pipe, from segregation, aid from blow holes. It places again before us in a very clear manner the question of piped ingots and of segregation, a question which has been debated for 20 years or more. I know very well the attitude of the standpatters in the matter. They claim that most of the pipe is removed in the discard, and that if a little is left it is so thoroughly welded that it does no harm. I for one am not convinced of the soundness of the argument. I do not believe there is any one present who would claim that, given an ingot free from pipe, free from segregation, and free from blow holes, better rails will not be made out of that ingot than out of the ordinary piped or segregated metal which is used by almost all of our steel mills. In my opinion, if we give our sanction to the casting of steel in the shape of piped or segregated steel ingots, we are guilty. If we give our sanction to the rolling of rails from such metal, we are guilty. It is our duty as experts, as steel makers, and as steel consumers to make and to use the best steel obtainable on a commercial basis, for the manufacture of rails. Now, we have been shown that sound ingots can be produced from which superior rails can be made. If we do not insist upon these sound ingots, then we fail in our duty. I think that the art of casting steel ingots has advanced to such a point that the casting of steel ingots piped and segregated ought no longer to be tolerated.

At a time when Congressional stiffening of health and safety regulations in the nation's coal mines seems all but an afterthought, when the problems confronting both mine operator and worker are being tossed about like a pigskin in an Australian- rules football match, what could be more appropriate to the times than to incorporate a discussion on these matters into the proceedings of an annual coal meeting. Integration of both technical and topical discussion provided the strength for this 28th Annual Meeting of the Central Appalachian Section of the AIME, convened at the The Greenbrier, White. Sulphur Springs. W. Va., Oct. 31-Nov. 1. Three technical sessions prepared for the occasion were served to those in attendance. First of these was held on Friday morning. Rendered excellent coverage, topics included Roof Structure Analysis at Blacksville No. I, presented by David Eyer, Christopher Coal Co.; Methane Monitors (evolution and evaluation of present day detection equipment); and Instantaneous Control Reaction to Mine Fires and Explosions, in which Elmer A. Fike illustrated the point quite vividly by showing a film on the potential of such control equipment. Indeed, the ability to snuff out a mine fire before it is allowed to spread even beyond its own igniting sparks speaks very well for itself. However, Fike hastened to point out that certain difficulties had to be overcome before these "fire watchers" could be implemented successfully in mines. These "bugs," inherent in virtually all coal mining environments, include ignition of sulfur pockets on mine facings and delivery of sparks on trolley rails, both of which may impede the accuracy of such control monitors.

Processes employing 'controlled at-mospheres in the heat-treatment of metals and alloys are now well established on an industrial scale, and the general principles involved and the advantages to be gained in the use of the technique have received considerable publicity over a period of years. During this time the greatest emphasis has been on the establishment of the process in industry, the main effort being devoted to development work on various types of atmospheres, their useful fields of application and the design of suitable heat-treatment furnaces in which they are to be used. The various types of controlled atmospheres are fairly well standardized, but there still remains a considerable field for the investigation of related problems, in connection with both the gas-generating equipment and the surface chemistry of the heat-treatment of metals, especially in complex controlled atmospheres. This paper describes certain investigations of this nature that were carried out in England up to 1939. The development of processes employing controlled atmospheres has been asso-ciated to a very large extent with the heat-treatment of steels, both because of the major importance of steel in industry and the many diverse and dificult prob-lems of surface chemistry involved when steels of such a wide range of composition are heated in the presence of active gases. Controlled atmospheres such as disso-ciated and burnt ammonia or charcoal gas are used in the heat-treatment of low-carbon and high-carbon steels, but from certain points of view a suitable atmosphere generated by the partial combustion of city gas is to be preferred. Processes employing 'controlled at-mospheres in the heat-treatment of metals and alloys are now well established on an industrial scale, and the general principles involved and the advantages to be gained in the use of the technique have received considerable publicity over a period of years. During this time the greatest emphasis has been on the establishment of the process in industry, the main effort being devoted to development work on various types of atmospheres, their useful fields of application and the design of suitable heat-treatment furnaces in which they are to be used. The various types of controlled atmospheres are fairly well standardized, but there still remains a considerable field for the investigation of related problems, in connection with both the gas-generating equipment and the surface chemistry of the heat-treatment of metals, especially in complex controlled atmospheres. This paper describes certain investigations of this nature that were carried out in England up to 1939. The development of processes employing controlled atmospheres has been asso-ciated to a very large extent with the heat-treatment of steels, both because of the major importance of steel in industry and the many diverse and dificult prob-lems of surface chemistry involved when steels of such a wide range of composition are heated in the presence of active gases. Controlled atmospheres such as disso-ciated and burnt ammonia or charcoal gas are used in the heat-treatment of low-carbon and high-carbon steels, but from certain points of view a suitable atmosphere generated by the partial combustion of city gas is to be preferred. The low solubility of bismuth in copper and its segregation at copper grain boundaries with resulting embrittlement is well known.1-3 The heterogeneous diffusion of liquid bismuth into polycrystalline copper has also been studied.4 This work presents some further observations on these phenomena using high-resolution auto radiography to detect the presence of bismuth in copper polycrystalline and bicrystal specimens. The auto radiographs were made by the stripping film technique which produces an autoradiograph that is intact with specimen surface and can be examined simultaneously with the under-lying microstructure. The details of the technique have been described previously.3 In one series of experiments, high-purity copper was alloyed with 0.02 to 0.03 wt pct radioactive bismuth obtained from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. THE application of gas or air under pressure to obtain more oil from a sand which has been practically exhausted by ordinary production methods has been practiced to a limited extent for many years. Until recently such methods were confined to the Eastern fields, principally those of Ohio and West Virginia, where in many cases the production obtained after applying pressure for a few years was nearly equal to the total production prior to that time which had been obtained by the usual production methods.' As early as 1917, J. 0. Lewis1 called attention to this method of increasing the recovery of oil and cited the phenomenal results obtained by H. E. Smith, I. L. Dunn and 0. C. Dunn, who pioneered the application of air or gas pressure recovery methods. With this information available it would appear that other oil-producing sections of the country have been extremely slow to realize the advantages of repressuring. However, after a few successful projects in the Mid-Continent area, the oil producers appreciated the value of this method for obtaining further and profitable production from their practically exhausted leases and are now making extensive use of it. In general, it has been the practice to apply pressure to the sands when production has declined to a small yield per well. The purpose of this paper is to discuss some of the advantages which may be expected from returning gas under pressure to the oil sands during the early stages of development, before the rock pressure has been dissipated and the gas exhausted, and to stimulate discussion of this subject on which comparatively little actual field data are available.

AT the seventeenth National Metal Congress, held at Chicago, Oct. 1-3, the Iron and Steel Division and Institute of Metals Division participated with the American Society for Metals, American Welding Society, and the Wire Association in one of the most successful meetings ever held. The total attendance at the technical sessions and the scope of and interest shown in the exhibits at the Exposition were greater than at any of the "Metal Weeks" since the depression began. The Iron and Steel Division held two all-day symposia and one general session. The latter, at the International Amphitheatre, Wednesday afternoon, was the only one poorly attended. This was attributable, at least partly, to the location of the meeting roan.

SINCE it was introduced in 1943 to recover chromite from Oregon beach sands, the Humphreys spiral concentrator has proved successful in several fields of wet mineral beneficiation. By the end of 1957, 9390 Humphreys spirals had been manufactured. Most of these are still in service. The spiral does not offer a panacea for all mineral dressing problems. Its proper application can best be determined by test work. Spirals present a unique advantage for the metallurgist to make tests in a full-size machine rather than a miniature model, without the risk involved in scaling up results. With only 10 to 40 lb of sample, the operator of a closed circuit test unit employing a full-size Humphreys spiral can conduct preliminary tests with full-scale loadings of 0.5 to 2.5 tph. With larger samples, from 300 to 500 lb, he can run longer multi-stage tests to obtain reliable data for the next step-pilot plant design. The manufacturer of the Humphreys spiral concentrator maintains a fully equipped ore dressing laboratory and by insisting on test work prior to sales has largely prevented misapplication of the spiral.
