THE technological interest attaching to light, age-hardening alloys for structural uses has been pointed out to one of us.1 A potentially interesting alloy would be titanium-rich Ti-Mg alloy, provided that sufficient solid solubility exists. or could be induced at high pressure. and provided also that age hardening can be induced by proper temperature and/or pressure annealing. It was decided therefore to explore the feasibility of producing a Ti-Mg alloy in the high-pressure apparatus. Experimental. Three high-pressure runs have been carried out. THE aim of this paper is to point out the various ways in which design is taught in standard four-year mining engineering curricula in American colleges and universities; to discuss the reasons apparently justifying the great diversity of procedure that exists along this line; and to indicate possible solutions to the difficulties now attending the teaching of design. A study was made of typical four-year mining engineering curricula in 15 colleges and universities of the United States (Table I). Great diversity in content of the various design courses, if taught as described, became apparent immediately. It appeared that it might be both interesting and instructive if the cause for this colorful variety could be found. Was the cause local mining conditions, departmental individuality, or actual necessity? Study of the school catalogues revealed that the various design courses could be classified into two fairly distinct types; namely, (I) those dealing with mine equipment or structures, and (2) those dealing with underground layout of mine workings. It seemed reasonable to label the first type of course "mining design" and the second type "mine design." Some such distinction must have been in the minds of mining educators, for we find both names (i.e., mine design and mining design) used to designate the design courses included in the various mining curricula. Unhappily, the name and the apparent content of such courses do not, in all instances, conform to the classification made here, although in most instances such conformation does obtain (Table I). It is possible that in the exceptional case the method of teaching a design course, and consequently the content of it, may have been changed at some time without change in the name of the course. Apparently only. 3 of the 15 schools made an effort to cover both types of design in their curricula (Table I). Two other schools did not list or describe any course of study that could with certainty be taken as a design course. Of the remaining 10 schools, q gave a mining-design type of course and one gave a strictly mine-design type. Obviously, the preponderance of design courses afforded are of the mining-design type. Why? To answer this question, it is necessary to make a study of the prerequisites for the two types of design courses taught. In all schools the design courses were taught in the senior year; in eight, design was taught throughout both semesters; in two, it was taught during the first semester only; and in three it was taught during the second semester only. Consequently, excepting the last three cases noted, it is obvious that all prerequisites for a design course should be completed by the end of the junior year. PREREQUISITES What are the probable prerequisites for the different kinds of design courses as they appear to be taught? Let us take first the case of the mine-design type of course, having to do with layout of underground workings. Here it would seem that logical

The earliest record of coal in Indiana is one of the earliest in the country. At the close of the French and Indian War, in 1763, the famous Indian trader, George Croghan, was sent from Pittsburgh on a mission to the western Indians. His party met that of a hostile chief on the lower Ohio and was captured, and were taken up the Wabash River; on June 22nd, he passed the mouth of the Vermilion River-probably the Big Vermilion-and on June 23rd, he made the following entry in his journal: "on the South Side of the Ouabache runs a high hank, in which are several very fine coal mines, and behind this bank, is a very large meadow, clear for several miles."' The mines, of course, were outcrops. A few days after this he met some Indian acquaintances who secured his freedom. This location was at Ouicatanon, 210 miles from "Port Vincent," which was destroyed a few years later, and in what is now Fountain County, probably near Coal Creek. Croghan was familiar with the coal already being worked at Pittsburgh. Surveyors who ran the township and section lines in the first ten years of the last century noted the presence of coal and marked its position on the maps in 1804.2 The next record is by Nicholas J. Roosevelt, who in 1809 examined the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers prior to starting building the first steamboat to navigate these rivers. "Not only did he do this, but finding coal on the banks of the Ohio, he purchased and opened mines of the mineral; and so confident was he of the success of the project on hand, that he caused supplies of the fuel to be heaped upon the shore, in anticipation of the wants of a steamboat whose keel had yet to be laid."3 It is probable that this account confused the date of seeing the coal with that of mining it, as an earlier account by another relative of Mrs. Roosevelt of the first trip of the steamboat New Orleans in 1811 is as follows:

NO important discoveries of petroleum during 1932 are reported from Canada. New Brunswick, which has a small production from one field, was inactive, and the production showed a decline from 6600 bbl. in 1931 to about 6300 bbl. for the year 1932. The old fields in Ontario increased from 123,000 to about 131,000 bbl. Alberta showed a decline of more than one-third, from 1,413,631 bbl. in 1931 to about 913,000 bbl. in 1932. This decline was due principally to the restrictions placed on the flow of gas wells in the Turner Valley field, from which the crude naphtha is obtained that accounted for more than 93 per cent of the production of Alberta and for more than 80 per cent of the production of all Canada in 1932. The starting of new wells to the limestone that produces the naphtha-bearing gas was prohibited late in 1931, and only wells started before that time were finished during 1932. One well was drilled in the Turner Valley field to a depth of 7555 ft., establishing a depth record for Canada. It passed out of the Madison limestone at 5560 ft., and encountered showings of oil in the underlying formations, probably of Devonian age. Commercial production had not been established by the end of the year. Commercial oil wells were brought in in two areas in Ontario which had previously been considered as productive of gas only— in the Dawn gas field, Lambton County, and in Raleigh Township, Kent County. The discovery wells had initial productions of about 50 bbl. per day, but no production of major importance is indicated. In Alberta, outside the Turner Valley district, two wildcats were drilled northwest. of Lethbridge in the Keho Lake vicinity. Both failed to make commercial producers in the Madison limestone, but one was testing upper sands at the close of the year. Good showings of oil are reported. A very small production was found in the Madison limestone in a wildcat well on the Twin River structure southeast of Lethbridge and another well has been started near by on what is considered on geophysical evidence to be a better location structurally. About 15 locations were made on the Canadian side of the border north of the Cut Bank development in Montana.

The annealing or softening temperature of cold-worked copper is appreciably increased by almost unbelievably small amounts of silver. As indicated by some data in this paper, the softening temperature of high-conductivity, tough-pitch copper may be increased from 200" to 350" C. by the addition of only 15 oz. per ton (0.052 per cent) of that element. Because it has this higher annealing temperature as compared with the silver-free metal, silver-bearing copper finds considerable use in industry. For example, when hard-rolled copper is used in operations that involve soldering or tinning, silver-bearing copper insures against loss of strength, whereas silver-free copper becomes "dead soft." Yet—though several investigators, beginning with Caesar and Gernerl in 1916, have shown that small amounts of silver do definitely raise the softening temperature of copper—data are lacking on the problem: What is the specific influence of different amounts of silver on this temperature? It was to help in filling this gap in the knowledge of what might be termed "alloy coppers" that the data given herein were obtained. The softening of cold-worked copper depends, of course, on a number of factors, of which the composition of the material is only one. Other highly important factors are the degree to which the material is cold-worked and the time it is held at the annealing temperature. The method of cold working and the grain size of the metal produced are also significant. All these variables were taken into account in the investigation reported here, and the influence of silver on the electrical conductivity and on the working was also considered. The coppers used in the softening tests were Lake coppers melted and cast by the Calumet and Hecla Consolidated Copper Co. The ires were fabricated by the Roebling Wire Co. and the sheets were rolled at the Battelle Memorial Institute. Partial analyses of some of the coppers are listed in Table 1, with their electrical conductivities.

Much attention has been given in the past few years to methods of increasing the recovery of oil from proven reserves. Numerous laboratories have made investigations to evaluate the possibilities of increased oil recovery by high-pressure injection of dry gas, injection of a propane slug followed by dry gas, solvent flooding. and by the injection at relatively low pressures of gases enriched with ethane and propane. Several years ago, Whorton and Kie-schnick' published the results of laboratory studies on high-pressure gas injection which showed that, in the case of light oils, recoveries could be considerably increased by sweeping the reservoir with dry gas at pressures in excess of 3,000 psig. The increase was attributed by those authors to the vaporization of oil at the invading gas front and viscosity and solubility effects produced at the front by the invading gas. Later, Stone and Crump' presented the results of a series of displacement experiments in which a light under-saturated crude oil was displaced from sand-packed columns with unusually high recoveries when the displacing gas was a rich condensate or a dry gas enriched with ethane or propane. They also conducted similar experiments at higher pressure on heavy undersa tu rated crude oil, although in this case the increase in recovery was not as great as in the case of the light oils. In both cases, viscosity reduction and swelling of the by-passed oil behind the invading gas front were believed to be responsible for the more favorable recovery of the original oil in place. Within the past year, other investigators", ' have presented the results of laboratory studies of miscible slug and solvent flooding recovery processes. This paper describes the laboratory methods developed for evaluating benefits to be obtained by enriched gas drive in specific reservoirs, and presents the results of several displacements of crude oils which possess a wide range of physical properties. The displacements were conducted at reservoir conditions of temperature and pressure. The apparatus used in the following experiments consisted of a sand-packed tube which served as the model reservoir, a cylinder of injection fluid, and a mercury pump. The stainless steel tube, 8 ft long and 0.53 in. I- was packed with a graded quartz sand. The high-pressure pump discharged mercury into the bottom of the injection fluid cylinder at a constant rate as low as 1 cc/hr. The average porosity and permeability of the sand column were 34.6 per cent and 3.25 darcies, respectively. In each case the tube was charged by the displacement of salt water by the reservoir oil under consideration. Recently a project was initiated to evaluate oil recovery by enriched gas drive from three oil reservoirs. Samples from a fourth reservoir (in this case high-viscosity oil) were studied with a view to obtaining recovery information of general applicability to low-grade, high-viscosity crudes. The oils from these four reservoirs exhibited a wide range of physical properties, and the reservoir conditions of pressure and temperature simulated in the laboratory represented several typical field conditions under which enriched gas drive might be employed. One of the reservoirs selected for laboratory displacement experiments produced an intermediate-gravity crude (29.6" API) by solution gas drive and a weak water drive. A low recovery in the range of 10 to 20 per cent was anticipated. Four displacement experiments were made to determine the effect of injection gas composition and initial gas saturation upon recovery of oil from the laboratory model. Two types of reservoir oil were used in these experiments. In the first run, a desaturated crude with a bubble point of 395 psi was charged to the tube. In the three subsequent runs, a simulated original reservoir oil was charged at 2,000 psi and produced by solution gas drive to 300 psi before beginning gas injec-

OLIVER C. RALSTON, Salt Lake City, Utah.-We are indebted to these two gentlemen for the work which they have done with the oils derived from sage brush. Their work should not be confused, however, as the work of Mr. Adams deals with steam-distilled oils and that of Mr. Clevenger with destructively distilled oil, largely. In other words, Mr. Adams' oil is probably the original essential oil that existed' in the brush before distillation while Mr. Clevenger's oil not only contained this essential oil but also some products of destructive distillation of the wood constituents. I had noticed the work of Mr. Adams on attempting to separate the various constituents in the oils of some of the Western conifers and had sent to him to ask if he could send me small samples of some of. these pure products. This he very kindly did, and with them included some samples of oil from the common sage brush, whose characteristics he has here described, as well as a sample of oil from the common "rabbit brush." Only the sage brush oil proved of much value for flotation, but it, was very powerful, and I so informed Mr. Adams. Even in amounts as small or smaller than 1/10 lb. per ton of ore, it gave very quick and positive flotation of many ores, with high-grade concentrates and good extractions. It proved to be especially desirable for the flotation of carbonates of lead and of copper which had received an artificial coating of sulphide by treatment with a solution of a soluble sulphide. I also received a sample of crude pyroligneous acid from sage brush prepared by Dr. W. C. Ebaugh, of Salt Lake City. It did not do very good work in flotation, but it is possible that by concentration of this product to obtain the residual tar a good flotation oil might result. This has not been done as yet and I am sorry to see that Mr. Clevenger has not done this. It might be that the dissolved tar, added to the settled tar, would make a total yield of flotation oil higher than the 4 per cent. which Mr. Clevenger feels is a safe estimate. The importance of this point will be seen in the following discussion of the possible costs of sage brush oils for flotation.

Ore microscopy has been applied to the complex cobalt-nickel- copper-lead-zinc ores from the Madison Mine in the Fredericktown subdistrict of the Southeast Missouri Lead District to predict potential beneficiation problems. It has been found that in some portions of the ore deposit, textures are present which may result in metal losses. In ores from the Bonneterre Transition Zone the intimate association of siegenite with chalcopyrite may result in cobalt and nickel losses to the copper concentrate and nickel contamination of the copper matte at the smelter. In ores from high stratigraphic horizons, this association is relatively uncommon, and siegenite is commonly associated with bravoite. This latter association will increase the the recovery of cobalt and nickel in the siegenite concentrate. However some cobalt and nickel will be lost to the tails as bravoite-pyrite particles due to the intimate intergrowth of these minerals. Other textures which may result in beneficiation problems include the intimate intergrowth of chalcopyrite and galena and the occurrence of sphalerite as inclusions in galena.

Increasing urbanization and industrial activity require increased supplies of sand and gravel. This means expanded surface mining and despoiled land near population centers. Highly competitive land use demands justify serious consideration of premining planning for multiple land use and reclamation concurrent with mining, 1-5 Formulating solutions to environmentally and economically sound uses requires a comprehensive approach based on properties of the natural resource base--geology, soils, and water. A study of sand and gravel mining within Pleistocene-Holocene fluvial deposits in Colorado County, Texas (Fig. I) illustrates how physical limitations imposed by the resource base are determined.6,7 Data from drillers logs of water wells, test boreholes, field observations, and laboratory analyses are used to evaluate these physical controls.

I have attended these meetings, every year, since 1926 and have served on both the Pittsburgh and the National Executive Committees, so that I am fully aware - of the ruling of this organization regarding, "No Papers by Vendors". Since I am now classified as a VENDOR, I wish to express my sincere appreciation for the invitation to formally discuss these very interesting papers --all of which herald the coming of an entirely new era in the manufacture of quality steels. About a year and a half ago, Mr. Morris, an engineer of the Solvay Process Company, was sent to Belgium and France to study the manufacture of coke in the Semet-Solvay ovens, which were in operation at Havre. With complete plans of construction and a good understanding of the methods of running the ovens, he returned to Syracuse. Work on twelve Semet-Solvay ovens was immediately begun. These ovens, with plant for crushing and washing coal, and the necessary condensers, scrubbers, and concentrator for the recovery of the byproducts are nearly finished, and will soon be in operation. As the work approached completion it became necessary to determine what coal should be used. Accordingly, a chemical investigation of the various bituminous coals was made. I. Investigation of Coals. The samples of coal taken for analysis were: I. A sample of Reynoldsville coal that had been exposed to the weather for a year; 11. Reynoldsville coal taken from a car direct from the mine; 111. Morris Run lump coal; IV. Morris Run fine coal; V. Coal from the Fairmount Coal and Coke Company; VI. A special enginecoal from Pardee colliery, Phillipsburg, Pa.; VII. South Fork, Pa., coal; VIII. The phase diagram of the Pseudobinary section PbTe-Fe was determined. It was found to contain a monotectic and a eutectic reaction, the latter one taking place at 14 at. pct Fe and 875° * 5°C. The solid solubility of iron in PbTe was found to be 0.3 at. pct by electronmicroProbe analysis. No solubility of PbTe was detected in iron. Slight deviations from true pseudobinary behavior were found to occur in the range of - 5 to 10 at. pct Fe. In the course of a general investigation of reactions of various metals with lead and tin telluride,' the lead telluride-iron system was reinvestigated. It had been established much earlier than iron does not chemically react with lead telluride but forms a eutectic with a melting point of 879" The eutectic composition or other related information has never been reported, but for a number of years iron has been in general use for contacting of lead telluride and lead telluride alloys for thermoelectric applications. It seems therefore desirable to clarify the exact constitution of the system to furnish a base for the long-term evaluation of bonds made between lead telluride and iron either by pressure contacting or by brazing methods. I) EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Lead telluride-iron alloys were prepared in 10-g charges, using premelted lead telluride. This material was prepared from high-purity, semiconductor-grade lead and tellurium obtained from the American Smelting and Refining Co. and described as 99.999 pct pure. The iron used was "Armco" iron; the major impurities found here were 0.02 pct C, 0.018 pct Si, and 0.015 pct Cr. All remaining impurities were less than 0.01, the total of all impurities not exceeding 0.15 pct. Charges were prepared in closed quartz arnpoules which were evacuated and in some cases backfilled with high-purity argon to retard excessive lead telluride evaporation and deposition in slightly cooler parts of the ampoule. For high iron concentrations, this can lead to total separation of the constituents, since the vapor pressure and the sublimation rate of PbTe are quite high.4 Nevertheless, since the ampoules are closed, no change in overall composition was expected and the nominal composition of all alloys was assumed to be retained. X-ray diffraction analysis, thermal analysis, and microsections were used in the evaluation of the alloys. The nature of the system was such that X-ray diffraction was not particularly helpful. It merely served to establish that at all concentrations PbTe and a! iron were in equilibrium at room temperature. Thermal analysis was carried out by taking direct temperature vs time curves on a Sargent recorder where a width of 10 in. was kept as 1 or 0.5 mv by use of an automatic bucking voltage network. Quartz ampoules with minimized dead space, coated with boron nitride and fitted with a thermocouple reentrant, were used as containers for the charge. At high temperatures and over long periods of time, boron nitride reacts with iron. For the thermal analysis runs, however, this was not significant. More significant was the fact that the vapor pressure of PbTe at some of the meas -uring temperatures apparently exceeded I atrn quite considerably. This, in some cases, caused the slightly softened quartz tubes to blow out if great care was not taken to contain them and minimize time and temperatures used. As containers pure nickel tubes were used which also served to avoid temperature gradients in the quartz ampoule. Nevertheless, the experimental difficulties at high temperatures were severe and the monotectic temperature could therefore not be determined accurately. In general, the accuracy reached by the thermal analysis setup in this case is *4"C as determined with gold, silver, and tin, under the conditions of analysis here. Inherently, the apparatus is capable of reaching accuracies better than i 1°C. Also, difficulties were encountered in microsection-ing. They were related to polishing, since it is rather difficult to avoid pulling the iron out of the weak and brittle lead telluride matrix. It proved best to follow a procedure where, after grinding to 600 grit on carborundum paper, a polish with 6 p diamond was used on nylon cloth. Finally, #3 "Buehler" alumina and an automatic polisher were used for -5 min only, to avoid relief. The best etching results were achieved with

IN anticipation of a shortage of labor for hand-tram-ming at the Cliffs shaft mine of the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. at Ishpeming, Mich., early in 1923 three 4-ton Goodman storage-battery locomotives, equipped with Edison batteries, were purchased. Storage-battery locomotives were chosen for this work because the expense and time required to put up trolley-wire and to bond the rails of the complicated system of tracks on the levels, where the locomotives were to be used, would not have been warranted by the amount of ,ore to be handled. The only changes in the tracks necessary for storage-battery locomotives were new switches and extra ties and braces on curves. The tracks were 24-in. gage, and were laid with 20-lb. rail. Edison batteries were chosen, because it was desired to charge the batteries from the trolley circuit already, in the mine, and this would have been impracticable with lead batteries. Each locomotive is equipped with 126 A-4 Edison cells, which are charged in series from the 240-volt trolley circuit while the trolley locomotives are running; and are discharged in parallel in two banks of 63 cells each. These locomotives were so successful that later 5 smaller locomotives, weighing 11/2 tons each, were pur-chased for use e with cars that are filled by hand and on levels where the amount of ore handled is small. These locomotives, built by the Geo. D. Whitcomb Co. of Rochelle, Ill., are equipped with batteries of 40 A-4 Edison cells each, the cells being the same as those, on the larger locomotives. They are charged from mer-curial-are rectifiers. These locomotives are operated by the trammers themselves, and have not special oper-ators like the larger machines. The trammers are all young men of American birth, and take quickly to the operation of machinery, and the simplicity of the con-trol on these locomotives has made special training unnecessary. A survey of the results was made by the A. C. Nielsen So., an excerpt from which follows: Eight Edison-equipped battery locomotives are now in use at an Ishpeming mine of the Cleveland-. Cliffs Iron Co. This equipment was installed to take the place of men who formerly pushed loaded cars by hand. Results have been very satisfactory and the de-pendable, trouble-free operation of the Edison batteries is considered to have been an important factor in the effectiveness of the new hauling method.

We rejoice that the world-war is ended. We are proud of the part played by the English-speaking peoples-all doing equal honor to the traditions they share in common. One of the compensations for the calamity of the past four years is the fact that the Briton and the American, striving together in the cause of human liberty, have learned to understand and to respect each other. It was a great foregathering of those that use the language of Shakespeare and idealize the principles of liberty for which the friends and associates of Shakespeare stood sponsor three centuries ago. At a time like this it is pleasant to dwell upon the fact that the liberal Englishmen who organized the Virginia company were the pioneers of self-government on the American continent. The Virginia Assembly, convoked in 1619, was the first example of a domestic parliament to regulate internal affairs on this side of the Atlantic.2 The Governor of Virginia, Sir Edwin Sandys, had been a pupil of Richard Hooker at Oxford and from that political teacher he and his friends had imbibed the idea of combining civil liberty with constitutional order. To this group of large-minded Englishmen, the American colonists owed their liberal charters and their successive triumphs over the royal prerogative. Let it be noted that the American colonists had to deal with James II and George III, the two smallest minds in the list of British kings. Another historical note more pleasant to record, is the connection between the two principal groups of American settlers. In 1608 when the Pilgrim fathers, William Brewster and John Robinson, led their Separatist congregation to Holland and there prepared the expedition to America, they were assisted by Sandys and the Virginia Council, who were willing to share their privileges with them. When the Pilgrims set sail in 1620 they had the promise, obtained by Sandys from King James, that they should have freedom of worship,

Production of crude oil in Tennessee during 1941 was slightly more than 15,000 bbl., about the same as in the preceding year. Two thirds of the total was from the Mississippi limestone pools in Scott and Morgan Counties. About a dozen small scattered wells in Clay, Pickett, and Fentress Counties, pumped irregularly, produced approximately 5000 bbl. Natural gas was marketed from wells in Morgan and Fentress Counties for consumption in the Sunbright and Jamestown areas, respectively. The production by counties is shown in Table I. Drilling activities in the state fell to the lowest stage since 1933. Twenty-seven wells were spudded in during 1941, of which six were drilling or only temporarily suspended on Dec. 37, 1941. Of the 22 completions, four were gas wells of undetermined quantity, but are classed as commercial, and 17 were dry or near-dry holes. One well encountered oil, but it has not been tested. The total footage drilled during the year was 29,916 ft.; the average depth of wells was 1359 ft. The more important wildcats are listed in Table 2; the distribution of tests according to physiographic divisions is given in Table 3. East Tennessee.—One well was drilled to 3480 ft. in northwestern Anderson County, in the highly disturbed Appalachian area, a region long considered the most unfavorable in the state for the accumulation of oil and gas. Another test is now drilling below 2000 ft. in this general area. Cumberland Plateau.—There were two completions in the Cumberland Plateau area. One test, drilled in northwestern Scott County in an area of former Mississippi limestone production,' encountered a considerable amount of free oil at 850 ft., about the same horizon as in the old abandoned wells. No pumping tests have been made to date. A well at Oneida, Scott County, found gas at 1579 ft. in a sandy limestone of lower Mississippian age. The volume was reported doubled by a shot, although no open-flow measurement is available. Eastern Highland Rim.—Six completions on the eastern Highland Rim resulted in two small gas wells in Fentress County, which will be used to augment the supply for Jamestown. The producing horizons are shaly limestones of Ordovician (Trenton) age. Two wells in this area tested the upper part of the Knox dolomite group, one of which encountered some free oil in a sandy dolomite at 1670 to 1681 ft. The growing background of experimental information concerning the volumetric and phase behavior of binary and ternary hydrocarbon systems is used as the basis for a comparison of these systems with naturally occurring hydrocarbon mixtures under conditions representative of underground petroleum reservoirs. The qualitative and semiquantitative similarities and differences between the two types of systems are considered in reference to the possibilities and limitations of using experimental data on binary and ternary systems for predicting the volumetric and phase behavior of naturally occurring hydrocarbon mixtures of low molecular weight. The possible influence on such phase behavior of water, hydrogen sulphide, nitrogen, and components of relatively high molecular weight is discussed. INTRODUCTION During the past two decades much effort has been devoted to the study of the volumetric and phase behavior of pure paraffin hydrocarbons and of binary and ternary mixtures of these compounds. Many of these studies were carried out with the direct objective of utilizing a knowledge of the detailed characteristics of binary and ternary mixtures of the lighter paraffin hydrocarbons for predicting the behavior of more complex mixtures. The ability to make such predictions with accuracy would be of great value in petroleum production and refining. Although the behavior of the methane-propane system' served at one time as a qualitative illustration of the probable characteristics of the more complex hydrocarbon mixtures found in nature, it' fell far short of requirements for quantitative predictions. The present paper endeavors to indicate the relation of the more recently accumulated information concerning the behavior of binary and ternary hydrocarbons to this problem. In discussing binary and ternary systems as examples pointing toward the behavior of multi-component systems no effort is made to present new methods of predicting the characteristics of natural hydrocarbon mixtures. Preliminary proposals have been made elsewhere for the prediction of volumetric phase equilibrium and thermodynamic data for multicomponent mixtures, utilizing as a basis the behavior of binary and ternary systems. Numerous other proposals have been made. That based upon the concept of a pseudo-critical state" has proved to be of value to the petroleum industry. Concurrently with this study of binary and ternary systems investigations have been made of natural hydrocarbon systems. Of the many publications reporting such experimental information only a few examples will be mentioned. A number of studies of black oil and natural gas have been made and much attention has been directed to extended and detailed investigations of the behavior of fluids in condensate fieldS 16,17,18,19,20. This work has been supplemented by some studies of the separation of bitumen from natural hydrocarbon liquids The over-all behavior of such systems has been used in predicting the volumetric and phase behavior of naturally occurring mixtures This background of experimental and correlated information concerning the behavior of multicomponent hydrocarbon systems also permits a direct comparison of the characteristics of binary and ternary aliphatic systems with those materials produced from underground reservoirs. PRESENTATION OF DATA The primary limitation encountered in using binary and ternary aliphatic hydrocarbon mixtures as examples of the characteristics of the fluids encountered in underground reservoirs lies in the existing lack of knowledge of the quantitative effect upon behavior of the presence of several important constituents, notably hydrocarbons of high molecular weight, water, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulphide, and nitrogen. The presence of substantial quantities of hydrocarbons of fairly high molecular weight serves to increase the complexity of the phase behavior of natural systems. No simple systems yet studied give adequate guidance in this regard. The influence of such materials of high molecular weight was indicated earlier",?' to an extent which serves to show that definite limitations now exist in the correlation of simple and complex systems. However, significant progress is being made in filling gaps in the information. For example, similarities in the behavior of fluids in condensate fields with that of binary and ternary systems are becoming more systematically evident.
