THE fact that gray iron increases in volume, cracks and distorts upon repeated heating and cooling is rather common knowledge. In ingot molds, Diesel engine pistons, carburizing boxes, continuous furnace parts, grate bars, stoker parts, and all castings that are subjected repeatedly to high and low temperatures, the phenomenon of growth presents a vital problem. Ingot molds distort and produce cracks which result in seams or laps and later appear as defects in the finished product. The heads of Diesel pistons frequently fail by cracking in a stellar shape. This is attributed usually to the result of permanent growth. Distortion and change of dimension of furnace parts frequently renders them entirely unusuable. In chain grate stokers, mechanical difficulties frequently are caused by the growth of the links. In proper operation these links should never attain a temperature sufficiently high to start growth; nevertheless, some have grown 1/8 in. on an 8-in. length when improperly operated. Even though the phenomenon is generally known there still exists a deficiency in the explanation of the mechanism of this growth. The field of investigators of this subject has a decided variation in opinion concerning the causes. The problem is of sufficient importance therefore to warrant further consideration.

Data of a known statistical quality has been successfully used in a system of conventional fluid mechanics equations essentially free of empirical "conformance factors to prediet early detailed field 03 in a reservoir where gravity drainage is important and oil and rock properties vary con. siderably. The system is useful where comparative recovery predictions for one or more cases of natural depletion and gas cap pressure maintenance are needed and the reservoir is not too heterogeneous. INTRODUCTION Many authors, have examined various facet* of the gravity drainage-gas cap pressure maintenance problem over the last several years. Two of them. Burtchaell and Elkins, have published practical studies. In the case described in the present paper the best development and operating plan for one of the important reservoirs of the Bolivar Coastal Field in Western Venezuela was urgently needed. It was requested that sound comparative economics be presented along with an engineering evaluation of no additional drilling, maximum drilling. several cases of gas pressure maintenance, of water flooding and combination cases. A rapid analysis of the effect on recovery of the range of crude and rock properties indicated that none of the published methods using average properties would yield adequate comparative predictions. This paper covers the predictive system developed to deal with natural depletion and gas cap pressure maintenance. The large amount of data available for this field permitted statistically reliable correlations to be made of most rock and oil properties, and the evident smooth areal variations of these properties encouraged the construction of a lineal mathematical model of material balance and fluid flow equations, which could be manipulated by a modified iterative procedure. The manipulation is much more adaptable to computing machines than manually operated calculators and subsequent studies have been prepared for the IBM Card Program Calculator. A matrix as opposed to linear model has been tentatively worked out by other members of our group to deal with more heterogeneous reservoirs. It is more adaptable to computers such as IBM-701 or the Remington-Rand Univac. In 1950, when the system reported below was developed, no rapid computing machines were available to the author. Their existence and promise encouraged an initial approach by hand. Some details of oil and rock Property correlation are included because there are a surprisingly large number of medium-sized reservoirs in the world that show systematic property variations which are significant for a rigorous analycon. All large reservoirs (over half a billion barrels recovery) with which the author is familiar contain at minimum a significant temperature variation. Using the rock and oil property correlations, past pressure and production, the gas-oil ratio history of the reservoir was computed and found to be in close agreement with field measurements. The future performance under cases of natural depletion, gas injection of 100 MMcf/day, and of 130 MMcf/day, was then computed; a 70 MMcf/day case was also carried far enough to provide data for comparative economics. The 130 MMcf/day case proved to be the most attractive. A 50,000 horsepower gas turbine driven centrifugal compressor plant to take this quantity of adjacent field gas from 30 to 1,950 psia and inject it into the reservoir is under construction. The total cost of the project will exceed 20 million dollars.

Improvements in the X-ray method of measuring liquid saturation and saturation distribution are presented. Two identical direct current amplifiers have been added to measure continuously the intensities of the X-ray tube output and the beam which has passed through the core under test. The ratio of these intensities is automatically recorded on a modified Brown Electronik Recorder. Arrangements have been made to drive the core automatically and in synchronism with the recorder chart so as to give a continuous curve showing the variation of liquid saturation along the length of the core. By determining the ratio of the two X-ray beam intensities simultaneously the measurements are made essentially independent of small fluctuation in voltage and current supplied to the tube. This improved technique has been used for investigating the fluid distribution along the length of cores and core assemblies when one fluid is displaced by another. Typical results of these studies are shown. INTRODUCTION In a previous publication' a method was described for measuring the oil saturation in cores which was based on the absorption of X-rays by the fluid content of the core. While that technique is capable of yielding accurate results, the original apparatus was not especially convenient for determining the fluid distribution along the length of a core. This was primarily due to the slow response of the amplifier and galvanometer and the necessity of making a point by point survey of the material under investigation. It was, therefore, not only possible for sections of the core having a variable or unusual saturation distribution to escape observation entirely, but changes in output of the X-ray generator between readings on the unknown and the monitor introduced errors in the measurements that could be avoided only by further stabilization of the source or by taking a large number of readings. This paper describes a method and apparatus for recording continuously and automatically the intensity of the X-ray beam that is transmitted by a core. The variation of saturation with time at a given section of the core may thus be found, or by scanning the core by driving it in synchronism with the recorder the saturation distribution may readily be determined. As indicated in the previous paper, the X-ray method possesses an advantage over the weighing technique in relative permeability experimentation in that the core need not be removed from the holder for the purpose of making a saturation measurement. Furthermore, the actual distribution of fluid and the effects upon that distribution of inflow and outflow heads may be investigated. And errors due to gas bubbles or loss of liquid that are frequently sources of error in volumetric methods of saturation determination are avoided. PRINCIPLE OF THE METHOD The energy in an X-ray beam that has passed through an absorbing material is expressed by the well known formula: E = E0, e-cd (1) where E, is the energy in the incident beam, µ the mass absorption coefficient, c the density or concentration of absorbing material, and d is the length of path of the beam in the absorber. The coefficient µ varies with the wavelength of the radiation as well as with the absorbing material. The output of an X-ray tube varies in an approximately linear manner with the tube current, but to the second or higher power of the anode voltage. Moreover, the quality or wavelength distribution of the radiation varies with the voltage.

RISSER] There is a tendency among laymen to relegate America's coal industry to Pennsylvania and West Virginia, completely overlooking-or unaware of- the vast reserves, both those developed and those untapped, situated in the 1.4 million square miles between the Appalachians and the Rockies. At the 1965 AIME Annual Meeting, Hubert E. Risser, Principal Mineral Economist of the Illinois State Geological Survey, presented an interesting picture of the wealth of mineral fuels occurring in that area. In his talk entitled "Trends in Mineral Fuels in the Central United States", Mr. Risser underscored the fact that "more than half of the nation's known reserves of each of the three major fuels-oil, gas and coal-lie within the Central area." The highlights of his speech, with emphasis on the coal situation, are excerpted below.

The rapid development of transportation routes on the African continent in recent years has greatly stimulated the demand for motor fuels and this in turn has led to more extensive exploration of such limited portions of the continent as seem to give promise of commercial oil production. In 1930, however, only two countries were classed as producers of petroleum and only one, Egypt, attained any importance. Egypt The petroleum production of Egypt is derived from the Gemsah and Hurghada fields on the west coast of the Red Sea and the Abu Durba, on its eastern shore in the Sinai peninsula. The Gemsah field, which began to produce commercially in 1912, has now practically ceased production, owing to the invasion of salt water. The Hurghada field has been producing since October, 1914. It now has about 60 producing wells. During 1929, a deeper sand with flowing produition was discovered in the eastern part of the field, producing oil of lighter gravity and free from water. The Abu Durba field was discovered by the exploration work of the Egyptian Government in 1918, oil having been found at a depth of 172 ft. This field has now 15 producing wells but a very small production. It is customary to regard the stress-strain relation as consisting of two parts, thc elastic region and the plastic region. The essential attribute of the plastic region is the presence of a permanent set, which remains upon removal of all stresses. The essential attribute of the elastic region is the absence of such a permanent set. Absence of a permanent set does not imply a linear relation between stress and strain, nor even a single valued relation. In fact, in no real metal is stress a single valued function of strain in the elastic region. The property of a solid in virtue of which stress and strain are not uniquely related in the elastic range will be called "anelasticity." The purpose of the present article is to review and correlate the past work upon the anelasticity of metals. The following paper by W. A. West124 describes investigations upon anelastic properties of iron. Many manifestations of anelasticity have been observed, the first as early as 1835 by Weber.l,2 In his experiments Weber subjected a specimen to a constant load (or deformation) for a given time, and then suddenly removed the load. He observed that most of the deformation suddenly disappeared, but that there remained a residual deformation, which disappeared only gradually with time, as is illustrated in Fig. I. The occurrence of a residual deformation which only gradually disappeared, Weber called the elastic after-effect (Elastische Nackwir-kung). An extensive review of the early work upon elastic after-effects has been given by Auerbach.3 Another manifestation of anelasticity is the dependence of the elastic constants---e.g., Young's modulus— upon the method of measurement. Thus, if dynamic methods are used, the measured value will depend upon the frequency of oscillation. Still another manifestation is dissipation of energy attending vibration, called damping or internal friction. One objective. of metallurgical science is the understanding of the plastic and fracture properties of metals in terms of their microstructure. Through such an understanding will come the ability to design microstructure to give the desired mechanical properties. A study of anelasticity will furnish an invaluable aid in the attainment of this objective. Such studies, when properly guided, yield information regarding the relation between stress and strain in the individual components of the microstructure. In order, however, that this type of information may be obtained, it is necessary that the experimental studies of anelasticity be interpreted by the appropriate mathematical analysis. This article, therefore, starts with the mathematical formulation of anelasticity.

The violent explosion of Mount St. Helens in the state of Washington on May 18, 1980 showered volcanic ash over vast areas of the Northwest. It was another eruptive episode in a long history of similar occurrences in the region, which extends from Canada to California and reaches several hundred miles inland from the Pacific Ocean. Pumice, pumicite, and cinders are products of explosive volcanic eruptions. Pumice and pumicite are produced by the violent expansion of dissolved gases in a viscous silicic lava such as rhyolite or dacite. Scoria is the mafic counterpart of pumice. Pumice is a light-colored, cellular, almost frothy rock made up of glass-walled bubble casts. It may occur as coherent, massive blocks composed of highly vesicular glassy lava in either a flow or vent filling, or it may be more or less fragmented by violent eruption. Pumicite, the diminutive of pumice, has the same origin, chemical composition, and glassy structure, differing only in particle size. Particles less than 0.16 in. in diam are designated pumicite. Pumice usually is found relatively close to the vent from which it was expelled, while pumicite may be carried by winds for great distances before settling as an accumulation of fine-grained ash or tuffaceous sediment. Mount St. Helens lofted an estimated 5 billion cu yd of ash and pumicite. The volcano, unlike most of the High Cascade peaks, is composed largely of dacitic material with only minor amounts of andesite and basalt. Volcanic cinders are the reddish to black vesicular fragments which pile up during explosive eruptions of volcanoes of basaltic composition. Most cinder deposits occur as cones or mounds of stratified fragments ranging from a fraction of an inch to several inches in diameter. Individual cones or mounds may be several hundred feet in diameter and up to 500 ft high. Properties and Uses Low bulk density, good heat and sound insulating properties, and excellent abrasive capabilities make pumice and pumicite useful in industrial applications. Cinders, though less cellular and somewhat heavier, also have a variety of industrial uses. The main use of pumice and cinders continues to be in the construction industry as road-surfacing material, railroad ballast, and building block aggregate. Pumicite is used in sizable quantities as a pozzolanic additive to monolithic concrete where it increases workability, strength, and durability of the concrete and reduces the heat of hydration. Volcanic cinders generally are denser and more coarsely cellular than most pumice. Markets for cinders include aggregate for road construction and surfacing and use in lightweight concretes, particularly blocks. Some producers having access to both pumice and cinders offer a variety of blends of the two materials to block manufacturers. Table I lists the principal applications of industrial pumice. Tables 2 and 3 show US sales and uses of volcanic products. Most pumice deposits are unconsolidated and usually have a minimum of overburden. Mining is by open pit and can be easily carried out with conventional loading equipment. Sometimes air drying precedes hauling to a crushing and screening plant which yields the size product desired. Multiple bins at railroad hauling facilities permit blending if desired. Pumice for abrasive use may require more sophisticated processing by fine grinding and air classification before being bagged for market.

Efficient mining of copper ore at the White Pine mine in Michigan's Upper Peninsula is partially dependent on the rather unique problem of predicting variations and rock types in a barren stratum called the upper sandstone. The pronounced effect which this formation has on the local mining techniques is reflected by the necessity of deciding whether to mine the sandstone along with ore-bearing rock, thus diluting overall ore grade, or, alternatively, leaving the sandstone behind to form the mine roof. THE OREBODY AND MINING TYPES In the mine, the cupriferous zone of the Nonesuch shale is divided into three major portions (Fig. I). Lying conformably on top of the Copper Harbor formation (or "lower sandstone") is the lower part of the orebody, the parting shale. The parting shale is overlain by the upper sandstone. On top of the upper sandstone, the basal portion (8 ft) of the upper shale is quite similar to the parting shale. Both the upper shale and parting shale are divided into a number of smaller stratigraphic units, each having a characteristic copper content, as shown by the histogram of Fig. 1. Other authors have dealt in detail with the stratigraphy and mineralogy of the orebody, so it will suffice here to call attention to the low copper content of the upper sandstone.

FRANK N. SPELLER,? Pittsburgh,. Pa.-Mr. -Hayward's paper again draws attention to the fact that copper in steel is not the enemy that a good many of us it one time thought it was. He shows clearly that steel with over 0.75 per cent. of copper is as dependable, under the :conditions which he describes, as the same steel without copper. I might add that you-can weld copper-steel- satisfactorily up to that point; in fact, we have succeeded in welding pipe by the lap weld process up to 1 per cent. copper. Notwithstanding the date that have been presented on the effects of copper on the physical properties and corrosion of steel, a maximum copper limitation is still found in many specifications. In some cases the limit is extremely low, such as below 0.05 .or 0.03: per cent., or thereabout. That is a relic of days gone by, and I think the practice should be discouraged. E. F. WHEN the roughing tables operated in 1923 were abandoned, all the coarse iron pyrite for-merly removed by the tables had to be ground to flotation size, which caused an increased power con-sumption of 2 kw.-hr. per ton. Recently, by increasing the tonnage, this has been reduced to a total of 16.6 kw.-hr. per ton. The cost of repairs has been slightly reduced by using an alkaline circuit instead of the acid mine water used in 1923. Other economies from elim-inating roughing tables and the finishing tables have more than compensated for the extra grinding and the total costs have remained practically the same, until the first part of 1927, when, with increased tonnage, the total cost has decreased to 72 cents and the repair cost to 9 cents. In 1923, with a combined gravity and bulk flotation flowsheet, the grade of concentrate was only 4.38 per cent copper. With preferential flotation this has in-creased to over 17 per cent copper. The tailing has decreased from 0.29 per cent -copper to 0.18 per cent. The copper recovery, instead of decreasing; as might be expected, has increased from 87.4 per cent to, 91.5 per cent. On electropolishing, high-purity Cu-Sn and Cu-Sn-P alloys with more than 5 to 9 pct Sn were found to contain many grain boundaries with a ridge-and-furrow profile. The effect was not eliminated by solution treatment and was present at the new boundaries in recrystallized material. It could be produced by diffusing tin into the 3 pct Sn alloy and it is concluded that the effect is due to enrichment of certain boundaries in tin, or possibly in an impurity present in the tin, in solid solution. IN the hot working of tin bronzes, especially those with moderately high tin contents, considerable difficulty is frequently encountered from intercrystal-line weakness, which results in cracking at the edges in sheet on strip rolling and in the unsupported regions of the rod in rod rolling.' These difficulties are not at all pronounced with up to 3 pct Sn, but at 5 pct Sn impose serious limitations and at higher tin contents, especially if the phosphorus content is also high, they may become very severe. In some work carried out at the laboratories of The British Non-Ferrous Metals Research Association it was found that a notable lack of ductility in tension at elevated temperatures, associated with intercrystal-line failure, was characteristic of tin bronzes even of relatively high purity. That the intercrystalline fracture is not due to a brittle or molten impurity phase at the grain boundaries was shown by the fact that the temperature at which intercrystalline fracture first occurred decreased with decrease of rate of straining. Tensile tests on some commercial tin bronzes, reported by Goetzel,² show a similar fall in ductility with increasing temperature. As no visual evidence had been obtained showing that the grain boundaries of the tin bronzes were different from those in copper, a more detailed microscopical examination was carried out, and the results of this are given in the present report. Several workers"' have observed that electrolytic polishing is a powerful tool for detecting small amounts of a second phase and in particular for detecting high solute concentrations, "equilibrium segregation," at grain boundaries. Since it had been found that the suggested solutions for electropolishing bronze and the standard solutions for brass and copper did not give satisfactory results it was first necessary to find a suitable electropolishing solution.' Experimental Procedure Materials Used: The cast and wrought materials used for this work were the same as those used for the mechanical tests referred to above. They comprised 3, 6, and 9 pct Sn alloys without phosphorus and the same three basic alloys with 0.03 and 0.4 pct P. A 5 pct Sn alloy without phosphorus, of similar purity, was also examined. The basis materials were Chempur tin, high purity 15 pct phosphor-copper and cathode copper, and spectrographic analyses are given in Table I. Treatment: The cathode copper was first melted under charcoal, degassed by plunging marble chips beneath the surface, and cast through a coal gas flame into sand molds to produce a number of small ingots which after machining were of a suitable size for subsequent vacuum melting. The development of a water-input profile instrument based on the introduction of brine and fresh water into an input well with the electrical location of, the boundary developed between them is reported. Two methods are available in the use of this instrument to measure the foot by foot water-intake rates of the various sand strata: the moving boundary method in which variable well bore diameters can be determined and/or cancelled out and the constant boundary method. The type of results obtained and the relative advantages of each of these methods are described in detail. Representative data are included covering the use of this instrument in experiments involving selective acidizing, selective plugging, and selective shooting. In such experiments, this instrument has been used to diagnose the unfavorable distribution of water intake in input wells and also to determine the effectiveness of the resultant treatments. The data included also serve to illustrate the type of problems which can be studied with this technique. Introduction For ten years or perhaps longer a number of progressive water-flood operators have felt the need for some to to measure the foot by foot water-intake rates of various strata in water-injection wells. The primary need is to diagnose unfavorable water distribution in various strata and to evaluate the effectiveness of the corrective measures such as selective acidizing, selective plugging, and selective shooting. Previously described methods for obtaining this type of data were not considered entirely adequate.l,2 The profile equipment described in this paper embodies the separate introduction of brine and fresh water into the well at carefully measured and controlled rates and the electrical location of a sharp boundary developed between these fluids. At present this instrument is a research tool of value in determining the effect of various well treatments on an individual sand strata. lts primary use has been on wells in which different sections require different treatments (e.g., wells with an open sand to be plugged and a tight sand to be acidized)- It has, thus, made possible the determination of a rearrangement of the water intake of a well. The instrument can also be used to direct the treating material into a given zone. In completing a well the less permeable sands are shot more heavily with nitroglycerine in order to equalize the water intake between the permeable and less permeable sands. The extent to which such corrective shooting has been successful Can be determined by a water-input profile. The combined profile and well-bore diameters should also provide a method for determining the direction and effect of various selective shooting techniques. Equipment The essentials of the water-input profile technique for measuring the intake per foot of individual sand strata are the injection of a nonconducting fluid, water, at the top of the well and a conducting fluid, brine, through a separate string of

In completing a well the less permeable sands are shot more heavily with nitroglycerine in order to equalize the water intake between the permeable and less permeable sands. The extent to which such corrective shooting has been successful Can be determined by a water-input profile. The combined profile and well-bore diameters should also provide a method for determining the direction and effect of various selective shooting techniques. In a recent paper,' one of us has presented some experimental evidence on the relationship between twinning and brittle fracture in steel. From metallographic examinations of brittle fracture it could be derived that mechanical twins and microcracks are formed already in front of a running brittle fracture. A tentative explanation based on the evaluation of the statistical distribution of mechanical twins vs various angles to the fracture was given in the above mentioned paper. It was suggested that these twins are caused by stress waves emitted by a running brittle fracture. With the aid of high-speed photography and the use of photo-stress sheet we are now able to study in more detail the propagation of a brittle fracture and the emittance of stress waves connected with fracture. A typical example is given in Fig. 1. In this figure a running brittle fracture in an ordinary Thomas steel is shown. In a recent study1 this author has investigated the effect of an electric field upon the solute redistribution accompanying solidification of Sn-Bi alloys. It was concluded that the primary effect of the electric current upon the solute redistribution resulted from electrotransport within the liquid boundary layer at the solid-liquid interface. In order to maximize the electrotransport effect all of the experiments were conducted at the highest current densities experimentally attainable. It was found that these high current densities produced considerable convective mixing within the liquid metal. This mixing reduces the boundary layer thickness and consequently reduces the effectiveness of the electric field in producing solute redistribution. Consequently, it is quite possible that the condition of maximum achievable current density would not correspond to maximum solute redistribution. It may be that, as the field intensity is increased, a point is reached where the additional solute redistribution from the increased electrotransport is more than offset by the decrease in solute redistribution resulting from the increased mixing in the liquid. In order to check this possibility the effective distribution coefficient has been determined as a function of current density in a series of experiments. Doubtless you all know of the rather extensive publications of Lachmann on mid-European salines and his scarcely successful, attempt to make the phenomena presented by our domes fit. into his "Exzeme" theory based on studies of European phenomena. This paper is a most welcome indication that scientific America is very much alive to the difficulties that have been encountered in attempts already made to explain the origin of the salt domes in the lower Mississippi embayment region. Praiseworthy, too, is the attempt to explain these phenomena by agencies still in operation. I may, perhaps, be permitted to state here that a former student of mine, and co-worker in Louisiana, A. Meetings of this committee were held at the Institute headquarters on April 18, May 2 and 15, and June 19. At the meeting of June 19, the Secretary reported that letters of invitation to apply for membership in the Institute had been sent to all the alumni of the School of Mines of Columbia University and also to all State Mine Inspectors and their deputies. He also reported the securing of lists of the alumni of the Harvard Engineering Schools, and of the Mining Schools at Houghton, Mich. ; Butte, Mont. ; State College, Pa.. ; Seattle, Wash.; Fayetteville, Ark. Laramie, Wyo.; Montreal, Canada, and Worcester and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institutes. Arrangements were made to invite all these to join the Institute. It. was suggested that a member of the Institute resident in Australia be appointed to this Committee, also one from Japan. Attention of the members of the Committee was drawn to the fact that letters requesting others to join the Institute will be written in the offices of the Institute if desired. several days before leaving Buffalo; influenza developed, and when his train reached Nashville, Tenn., he was too ill to continue his journey and was taken to the Kissam Hall Hospital, Vanderbilt University, where he died of pneumonia. He was a young man of unusual ability and high moral character, always brigh.t, happy and kind, faithful and honorable in all things; loved by both his associates and those under his authority. His life and character cannot be better described than by the following quotation from one of his superior officers: "Lieutenant Ohnsorg was a man loved by all of us, always cheerful, just and kind, with unusual executive ability. We can never expect to find a man who has his ability and fine temperament and his position can never be sled as he filled it." He was happily married and leaves to mourn his loss a wife, Constance E. (Rogers) Ohnsorg and a baby girl born since his death, Nov. 29, 1918, a father, W. H. Ohnsorg, mother, Ida May Ohnsorg, and a sister, Mrs. Stuart Strathy McNair. He was a member of the American Institute of Mining Engineers and of the Florida Phosphate Miners' Association. Lieutenant Edward Hale Perry At the height of the first great German'offensive -of'the Spring of 1918, Edward Hale Perry, of Boston, First Lieutenant, Company D, Sixth Regiment Engineers, U. S. Army, was killed on March 30, near War fusee—Aban-court, Picardy, France, while defending the Boisdes Tailloux against the terrific plunge aimed at Amiens. Lieutenant Perry was born in Boston, Jan. 23, 1887, the son of Georgianna W. and the late Charles F. Perry. After completion of his college preparatory course, he travelled for a year in South America and Europe before entering Harvard with the class of 1910. It might have been regarded as the natural thing for Perry, upon graduation, to choose a path that would lead to a business or professional career at home, but there were in his character a solidity, a horror of sham, a contempt for the "soft" things, and a love-of the open which caused him to be attracted to a life of stern and sturdy reality. Accordingly, he entered the graduate mining school at Harvard, and received the degree of Mining Engineer in 1913. In the meantime, two summers spent in Western mining camps had at-
