DURING an experimental investigation of the Kirken dall effect in the Ag-Au system, cracks along grain boundaries in connection with a shift of adjoining crys tallites are observed on the gold-rich side of the couple. Also on the gold-rich side the formation of a zone of small protrusions is found.' The growth law of the width of this zone indicates that the protrusion formation is a secondary effect of diffusion. The protrusions are not found within a distance of approximately 60 from a grain boundary. Unaffected regions along grain boundaries were also observed by Doherty and Davis during precipitation of vacancies in aluminum2 and by Wyon and Lacombe during precipitation of iron in aluminum.3 Thus we may suppose that we have an effect analogous to precipitation in which the crystal tends to maintain its equilibrium vacancy concentration by transporting excess atoms to the surface. At an early stage (i.e., before sintering has influenced the shape of the protrusions) the protrusions have similar shapes (three sided pyramids and roof shapes) and similar orientations within a single grain but vary from one grain to another. In the spring of 1878 the Pine Grove Furnace, located in Cumberland County, Pa., was blown in after lying idle for several years. The fnrnace was constructed in 1770, and for over a century it has been in almost continual operation. The plant consisted in 1877, when the writer was first called there, of a stone stack 32 feet in height, inclosing a shaft and boshes, the latter being 8 feet in diameter. The blast was supplid by two wooden blowing-tubs discharging into a third, having a floating piston sustaining a box weighted to give the desired pressure, the power being furnished by a waterwheel. A small 18-pipe hot-blast stove heated the blast. The furnace was remodelled during the winter of'77-78, and a Weimer blowing-engine with a blowing-tub 5 feet in diameter and 2 feet stroke, and the necessary boilers, were substituted for the wooden tubs and water-wheel. The stack was raised and enlarged, and provided with a bell and hopper having a central drop. Water dam and tymp were added, and general repairs were made. The hot oven, however, was not increased. The furnace had always been operated with charcoal as fuel, and its reconstruction was made with a view to continue the use of charcoal, but provision was made for ample blowing capacity should other fuels at any time be employed. Although liberal arrangements had been made in cutting wood, the stock of charcoal supplied in 1878 was insufficient for the increased requirements of the remodelled plant, and notwithstanding the purchase of some 80,000 bushels from an adjacent idle furnace, there war: riot enough to keep the furnace in constant blast until a new supply could be obtained, particularly as the season was unusually backward. Instead of following the established precedent of many charcoal furnace managers, i. e., blow out every February, it was detemined to continue in blast, using coke as fuel. Accordingly, when the charcoal stock was exhansted, on March 22d, 1879, Connellsville coke was substituted, the change of fuel being made at once; that is, the coke charges followed immediately upon the last charcoal charges. After working a few days, the strike in the Connellsville coke region cut of the supply, and anthracite coal was obtained, a mixture of the two fuels being employed. The strike continuing,

Two growing problems confront the preparation engineer-still further restrictions on stream pollution and a greater proportion of fine coal as more and more continuous miners come into use. The dewatering screens, centrifuges, and settling ponds that sufficed a few years ago must often be supplemented by more effective equipment, and in some instances the finest solids are now being recovered by vacuum filtration, once considered too costly in many coal washeries. Unfortunately not all slurries can be readily filtered. Some are virtually unfilterable, and others do not permit the high cake rates needed to hold costs within reason. Often, however, these difficult slurries can be rendered filterable by flocculation. Starch and lime have long increased settling rate in thickeners and can also aid filtration. More recently there have been other flocculants, primarily synthetic polymers or gums. Reports of their great effectiveness prompted the U. S. Bureau of Mines to test their use in filtration as part of its program on recovering and cleaning fine coal. The object of the present work was to compare some of the newer flocculants with starch and lime and to test the reaction of different types of slurries to flocculation. Three natural slurries, three synthetic coal-clay mixtures, and five flocculants were tested, all with a laboratory filter leaf.

"In the mines producing over 500 tons per day, skips have replaced the old method of hoisting ore by cars run onto cages. In the car and cage method, two men (station tenders) trammed the loaded cars onto the one-deck cage, and as the production increased the one-deck cage was increased to two decks and later to four decks. Landing chairs at the underground stations were necessary in this method and were the cause of many serious accidents by being carelessly left in the shaft by the station-tenders when leaving one station for anotherabove. The labor and time occupied in loading the leaving cages were con¬siderable, and, at times of rapid hoisting, four men were necessary in taking off empty and caging loaded cars. This also required at the surface landing, as many as ten men on a shift to remove the loaded cars and replacing them with empties, and tram the loaded ones to the surface ore bins, where the railway cars were loaded.The skips used in Butte are generally of 100 cubic feet capacity and hold five tons of ore, and weigh 7,500 lbs. The cage above, to which the skip is attached, weighs 2,300 lbs. The skips dump automatically into a pocket of 50 tons capacity. Two men are with the skips underground and load them from 125 ton capacity ore-pockets, under each station, the bottoms of the pockets having an inclination of 50 degrees from the horizontal. At the bottom of these pockets a gate is operated by compressed air. The labor of loading the skips amounts only to the opening and closing of a valve in the air-line, the ore running by gravity into the skips.Besides the saving in labor, the use of the skips has removed the necessity of underground landing chairs in the shaft and the accidents which are inevitable where such chairs are used."

THE matters I had intended to present to you ap-peared in the March 12 issue of Engineering and Mining Journal over the signature of George J. Young, so that although I should like to talk to you for about three hours on this subject, unfortunately it has all been done before. The subject originally sug-gested to me was the trend in mining methods. You will find that fully set forth much more clearly than I could hope to do, in Mr. Young's article, so that I shall confine my attention to a few points of interest in specific cases. You are undoubtedly familiar with the problem that was presented to the Miami Copper Co. when they had exhausted their so-called high-grade orebody. They had what appeared to be a large tonnage of material which their preliminary development work and such drilling as was done indicated contained one per cent copper or a-little over, and how to mine that profitably by underground methods was the question. It was somewhat complicated by the fact that the nature of the ground made them doubtful of their ability to cave it successfully. It was unquestionably harder ground than that of the more highly mineralized sections of the Miami and Inspiration- ore zone which had been mined. However, they had kept very accurate and complete records of past accomplishments and knew what they had to work with and what modifications with respect to costs would be necessary in order to solve this problem. Under the old method of working, they were extract-ing about 71/2 tons per man employed in the mining department; that is to say all labor, direct and indirect required to put the ore in the mill bins, and this, with the grade of ore which they had, resulted in a satis-factory financial outcome. Under their modified method now in use, they have raised that output per man to 29 tons per man shift. That is almost four times what they were doing with the old method.

The Red Mountain district, in Ouray County, Colorado, has been already referred to in the Transactions of the Institute, and notably in papers by Mr. T. B. Comstock, on " The Geology and VeinStructure of Southwestern Colorado" (Trans., xv., 218), and on " Hot-Spring Formations in Red Mountain District, Colorado—A Reply to the Criticisms of Mr. Emmons" (Trans., xvii., 261), and in the paper of Mr. S. F. Emmons, on " Structural Relations of Ore-Deposits" (Tram., xvi., 804). The district has attracted much attention from those interested in geology, because it seems to present a variety of ore-deposits rarely, if ever, met with elsewhere, and one which cannot be described by such well-understood terms as fissure-veins, bedded-deposits, or contact-formation. It will be the scope of this paper to note briefly, from the writer's experience in developing the Yankee Girl, Guston and other Red Mountain properties,—first, observed facts as to the ore occurrence and formation, and second, certain unsolved geological questions. This paper is a resume of a study undertaken by the West Virginia Department of Mines. The underlying and direct causes of accidents are determined in each occupational group. Then from this study, accident prevention courses, visual and written, are to be taken to the various working groups in the mines. THE causes of accidents in West Virginia mines follow the main pattern of coal industry accidents in the United States—falls of roof, ribs and face, 56 pct; from haulage, 25 to 30 pet; blasting, 3 pet; electrocutions, 3 pct; explosions, 2 pct; and other causes, about 10 pct. To arrive at some satisfactory conclusions regarding causes and prevention of mine accidents, the Department of Mines has made a study of all mine accidents, from 1945 to 1948, inclusive. During the last two years of this period, we did not have a major explosion, one that took the lives of as many as five men. The direct cause of these accidents is apparent in the reports but we who are making a close study into their frequency think that the virus lies much deeper, and we want to suggest an underlying cause. The rapid growth of the coal industry in West Virginia, the largest producer of bituminous coal, has resulted in a demand for manpower which probably has never been equaled in mining history. At the turn of the century, West Virginia had 24,635 men employed in and about her mines, and they produced 21,153,341 tons of coal a year. In 1948, there were 125,669 men employed, and coal production for the year was 168,589,033 tons, an average increase of 35 pct for each year since 1900. Over 100,000,000 tons of this increase were mined in the southern counties of the state. A safety analyst might read into the history of this development an underlying cause for accident occurrence. He might say that in such a vast, rapid development the available supply of trained miners became exhausted and that young, inexperienced men were employed in the mines by the thousands. Being unacquainted with the hazards of mining, it would be only natural for these young men to be injured or killed in too great a number. This assumption would not be borne out by the records. Men were not injured or killed in disproportionate numbers during their first years in a mine. The only reason we can give is that, during these years, they possessed an attribute of safety—CAUTION—to a much greater degree than in the years following. The coal companies in West Virginia that have been operating over a number of years have a nucleus of employees who have been with them ten, twenty, thirty, and forty years; many of them having gained all of their mining experience with one company. TWELVE years ago, a meeting of coal-mine operators, mining engineers, oil and gas operators, Bureau of Mines engineers, geologists and state mine inspectors took place in Pittsburgh, Pa. for the purpose of discussing, and solving if possible, the problems in connection with the drilling of oil and gas wells through or near coal mines and through the future coal reserves. Proposed regulations were drafted and presented at that meeting by 0. P. Hood and A. G. Heggem of the Bureau of Mines.1There was considerable discussion of the various articles, practically all of which appear in Bulletin 65, but unfortunately the interest aroused at that meeting was short lived. Practically none of the important coal-, producing states gave the matter the consideration it should have received at that time. REASONS FOR AGAIN RAISING THE QUESTION Notwithstanding the marked progress in, safety work, coal mines still have an unenviable reputation for mine explosions. Our mining laws have become stricter and the enforcement, especially in Pennsylvania, more sternly carried out, but what good will come from a rigid carrying out of the mining laws if some source of danger exists all around the mines, over which the operators have no control? It is hardly necessary to recite all the cases of natural-gas explosions published in Bulletin 65, but with some of them I am especially familiar. In 1912, while making one of my usual Sunday visits to the Miners' Hospital, at Fairmont, W. Va., my attention was called to a patient in a horribly burned condition. He was swathed in bandages so that no part of his face and hands were visible. He had not then been informed that his two sons, mere boys, had died of the burns they had received in the same accident. This explosion was due to natural gas leaking into a country mine at Peora, Harrison Co., W. Va.

UNDER the caption "fault," geologists intend to include all mass movements of solid rocks over adjacent rock masses. When these are studied long after their origin, however, circumstances make it possible to recognize as "fault" only formations showing clear evidence of actual movement of one side with' respect to the other. Necessarily the chief evidence consists of the offset of a vein, bed, or other key structure. Planes of movement parallel to the bedding; or nearly so, are recognized with difficulty or are overlooked and hence many important faults are wholly unrecorded. Indeed, among standard American references on structural geology, one alone emphasizes the importance of bedding-plane movements and that' one only briefly1. For some time the writer, cognizant of this difficulty, has paid special attention to such movements, both as observed in the field and as recorded in the literature. It is believed that enough data are now at hand to justify a short-discussion. Its purposes are fivefold. It is desired first to briefly classify and describe at least the more common kinds of bedding-plane faults, and second, to examine the causes and manner of their formation, at least in instances where the subject has not yet been well covered by other investigators. Third, certain by-products of bedding-plane movements are of such conspicuous importance to the economic geologist and mining engineer as to merit mention. Fourth, concrete illustrations should be placed before the reader in order to lend reality and to furnish a basis of comparison with his experience; such illustrations will necessarily be scattered through the text of this paper. They' are only in part from the writer's own field observations. The fifth and prime objective of this paper is to direct attention to the great importance of movements on the bedding planes, in the hope that the recognition of such movements and their significance may simplify mining problems.

There is, in the southern part of the State of Illinois, a series of deposits of fluorspar and galena in which the former mineral occurs on a scale of magnitude unequalled, so far as I know, in any other part of the world. In June, 1891, 1 had an opportunity of visiting the region of their principal development, near Rosiclare, Hardin county, Ill., and examined such of the mines in the vicinity as were accessible at that time. A very large proportion of the mining shafts that had been sunk in this region were unfortunately abandoned for the time being, and full of water. Moreover, detailed maps of the region are unattainable, no surveys having been made there, apparently, since the original land-surveys' of the early part of the century. In spite of these disadvantages I was enabled, in the few days at my disposal, to ascertain with sufficient accuracy certain facts not hitherto published with regard to these deposits, which seem worthy the attention of the members of the Institute. Before proceeding to a description of the deposits in question, I will give a brief abstract of the little historical and geological information hearing directly or indirectly upon them, which I have been able to find in existing publications. Historical. That the mineral was known to the Indians, is proved by the discovery, in some of the pre-historic mounds of the region,* of fluorspar, shaped into ornaments. The earliest scientific mention of its occurrence is found in the first volume of the American Journal of Science (1818+), which describes specimens obtained in the vicinity of Shawneetown by Mr. Joseph Baldwin. Similar notices appear in the same journal in 1820 and 1821, but without mention of the exact locality. They remark on the fetid odor which characterizes the mineral and its association with galena. The effect of the rate of cooling on titanium, zirconium, and thallium has been measured. For titanium-molybdenum alloys, it has been shown that for molybdenum concentration up to 8 pct the rate of cooling has no effect on the transformation temperature, but this temperature decreases progressively with increasing molybdenum content. HIGH strength to weight ratio and remarkable corrosion resistance have often been advanced as the main reasons for the present widespread interest in titanium. For the physical metallurgist, the existence of an allotropic transformation in titanium is another important factor. As in the case of iron, an allotropic transformation may be the fundamental property upon which the response of Ti-base alloys to heat treatment will depend. It is therefore important to study the mechanism of the allotropic transformation in pure titanium and the effect of alloying elements on this transformation. The existence of an allotropic transformation in titanium was reported in 1931 by Schulze.' Later, De Boer et al.' determined the transformation temperature from a discontinuity in the electrical resistivity at 882"42O°C. According to recent work," the transformation temperature is 882.5"&1°C. The crystal structure of the room temperature a phase is hexagonal close-packed and the high temperature fi phase is body-centered cubic.' It is well known that the high temperature /3 phase of pure titanium cannot be retained by quenching to room temperature. Several investigators'-' have shown that in alloys of titanium with metals which are soluble in the @ phase (for example, nickel, molybdenum, chromium, or manganese), the /3 structure can be retained, providing the concentration of the alloying element is greater than a certain critical value. Below this critical value, the alloys transform during quenching, at least partially, into a supersaturated solid solution having the a. structure. This behavior is very similar to that found in some iron binary alloys (Fe-Ni and Fe-Mh, for example) and is an indication that the transformation might occur by means of a shear mechanism analogous to that observed in the austenite-martensite reaction. The present investigation is mostly concerned with the effect of the rate of cooling on the /3 to a transformation. In the first portion of this paper, the results obtained on pure titanium are described. Two other pure metals, zirconium and thallium, were also investigated, because they both have an allotropic transformation like titanium, from an hexagonal close-packed to a body-centered cubic structure. For purposes of comparison, the effect of rate of cooling of the y to a transformation of iron was included in the experimental program. The second part of this paper deals with Ti-Mo alloys. The equilibrium phase boundaries involving the solid state reactions on the Ti-rich side of the system were determined and a study was made of the effect of the rate of cooling on the transformation of the high temperature /3 solid solution. Experimental Procedure Since the main object of the present investigation was the determination of the effect of the rate of cooling on a transformation temperature, the best technique available was that used by Greninger" in his study of the martensite arrest in carbon steels. This method consists of heating a very small sample of metal to which fine thermocouple wires are .attached, cooling the sample rapidly by means of a blast of helium, and recording the temperature vs. time curve on an oscillograph. The apparatus used in the present experiments was very similar to that described by Greninger, except that the heating coil was made of molybdenum wire (0.040 in. in diam) and the assembly was placed in a bell jar under vacuum of 10" mm Hg or less. Since the earliest discoveries of oil in the Rocky Mountain area the spirit of cooperation in drilling and production programs has prevailed. There has scarcely been a field which has not been developed in an orderly manner through mutual agreement between competitive operators. An appreciable saving has resulted, as many unnecessary wells have been eliminated. We have unit operation plans and agreements which were developed at an early date. Rock River, found in 1918, has been a unit operation. One of the first prorate agreements ever attempted was made in Salt Creek in 1921. Teapot, first developed in 1922, has been a unit operation; the lessee, the Government, and the lessor, one operator. South Casper Creek, found in 1918, has been developed as a unit. Rex Lake, found in 1923, is a unit operation. The list might be extended materially but it serves to indicate that the Rocky Mountain region enjoyed the fruits of unit operation at an early date. It is concluded from this unitization study in the Rocky Mountain region that there is an appreciable saving in both development and production costs as well as the elimination of waste of a natural resource. Certainly, when unit operation conserves an irreplaceable natural resource as well as capital, any legal or political impediment to its successful development will be overcome. If one company supervises the operations in one field, it appears to be a unit operation. This may not be true if the lands involved have been leased from a great number of lessors. Royalty holders create a most intense competitive operation. The Rocky Mountain region has its full quota of such diversified interests. The original study calls for consideration of two types of fields, unit and near-unit operation. This Committee has felt that if an agreement of any character has brought about a saving it is an approach to unit operation. The fields have been classified into four types: 1. Unit Operation.—Any field whereby the competitive drilling-drainage feature is or will be absent in the development and operation of the pool.

TAKING into consideration the present state of geologic knowledge and present economic status of the oil industry, we have attempted to outline the six principal districts in which oil occurs and new pools may be expected. The map, Fig. 1, also shows the location of the present productive pools-about 100 in number. The unshaded areas represent territory where drilling depths to known sands are prohibitive with present development and pumping methods, or such sands are absent or give promise of such small production that deep wildcat tests are unwarranted. They include, also, territory where the oil-source materials are absent or not of the right type; and where shales are insufficient in the stratigraphic section to prevent the escape of oil and gas. Some doubtful districts are also included, such as the Pecos Valley, where the percentage of rigid beds, sandstones and limestones may be too great; and the Nacogdoches oil field, where small shallow production is obtained but where deep or large production is unlikely. The map is not offered as final but in the hope that it may prevent the expenditure of large sums in attempted development of unlikely territory and as the warning that those who drill in the unshaded territory do so at great risk. Those who drill in such territory should have large sums available for pioneering and experimenting and only attempt it if they can well afford to lose the money expended. Search in the shaded or cross-hatched areas is hazardous enough and should only be undertaken after detailed geologic surveys. Out of a total area of 256,000 sq. mi., the oil and gas districts comprise about 80,000 sq. mi.; the territory embraced in these districts is shown in the shaded portions. This may ultimately be increased somewhat by the addition of some minor districts, but such additions will be offset by territory probably now included in the unshaded areas. The shaded areas probably contain 98 per cent. or more of the ultimate production of the state, despite the fact that they represent only 31 per cent. of the total area.

A method for the interpretation of temperature curves recorded in gas producing wells is described. One essen-tial feature of the method is a simple graphical construction which conveniently reflects the amount of gas flowing from a given producing formation. This method, applied in conjunction with the Induction Log and radioactivity logs, is valuable to determine the points of entry of gas and to estimate the over-all thickness of the producing zones and their respective contributions to the total production. The method in particular is helpful in evaluating the effect of fracturing operations. An outstanding result of the application of the method is to bring to the light the relative importance of sand-shale interfaces in the production of gas. The paper is illustrated with field examp1es. INTRODUCTION The electrical logging tools involving conventional systems are not applied in wells which do not contain water base mud (empty holes, or wells filled with oil base mud), because of the absence of electrical connection between the electrodes and the surrounding formations. It is, therefore, common practice in this case to use other methods which do not require the presence of a conductive fluid in the borehole: resistivity log with scratcher electrodes, Induction Log, radioactivity logs, temperature log. . . . Such conditions are encountered in some regions, as the San Juan Basin, N. Mex., where a technique of drilling gas wells, using gas as a drilling fluid, has been introduced in the last two years. By the middle of 1953, an appropriate method for the logging of these wells was devised on the basis of field tests and of theoretical studies. It is the purpose of the present paper to give a description of this method. In these wells the logging operations are performed during the process of gas production, so that the temperatures in the boreholes are strongly affected by the cooling due to the expansion of the gas. On the other hand, a special thermometer, with a high sensivity and a short time constant, has been recently made available, which has enabled much more detailed and accurate recordings of the borehole temperatures than with the conventional instruments. As a result of these two circumstances, the temperature log constitutes the essential element of the method, in making possible the detection of the gas producing zones, the definition of their boundaries, and the estimation of the respective contributions of each separate zone to the total production. The method also involves the radioactivity and Induction Logs, as auxiliary documents. These logs in the present instance are helpful in the determination of the reservoirs. However, the information they give in this respect is limited. This comes from the fact that, due to the absence of the MicroLog and/or MicroLaterolog and of the SP log, the estimation of formation factors and connate water salinities is somewhat conjectural. Furthermore, little help is obtained from the Neutron log for the evaluation of porosity and of formation factor because the variations of gas saturation affect the Neutron log in a way similar to the variations of porosity. It should be said also that even an exact knowledge of the gas saturation of the reservoir beds would not
