WHEN the Cushing field flooded the oil market in 1914 and 1915 with a daily output equal to nearly one-third of the world's production, the situation was soon corrected by increased consumption, and the price of crude oil rose from 45 c. per barrel in, February 1915 to $1.10 in December of the same year-the highest price paid in the Mid-Continent field up to that time. The intensive search for oil during the following seven years failed to disclose a single new ,field equal to Cushing, and many observers concluded that the rapidly increasing number of wells contributing to the world's output, each declining roughly 20 per cent. a year, combined with the rapidly increasing con¬sumption of petroleum, made it highly improbable that any field would; be found again sufficiently large to seri¬ously affect the oil market. That seven exceptional fields should then be discovered simultaneously is a remarkable coincidence. Long Beach, Santa Fe Springs, and Powell, each exceeded Cushing in daily output and reached the apex of their production during a year when Burbank, Tonkawa, - Smackover and Huntington Beach each contributed several times the daily output of the average new pool. This unexpected and tremendous flood of flush production could only have the effect of depressing price and greatly adding to stocks throughout the country. It was particularly depressing in the Mid-Continent as the new oil from California proved of attractive refining grade and because of cheap transportation by water easily undersold Oklahoma crude in the eastern markets.

BARITE, naturally occurring barium sulphate, is the chief barium mineral that is produced commercially. Barite is also called "barytes," "heavy spar," sometimes "baryta" and, locally in Missouri, "tiff." Pure barite is white, opaque to transparent. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, frequently with twinning. Impurities cause a wide variation in color, commonly buff, gray and white with irregular reddish iron stains. Less frequently found are shades of yellow, green, blue, brown, and black. The rock is brittle and breaks with an uneven fracture, although specimens from some of the residual deposits, particularly in Missouri, appear to have a cleavage due to the separation of the different layers of deposition. The hardness varies from 2.5 to 3.5 on Mohs' scale and different localities are said to produce either "hard" or "soft" barite. This generally refers to the ease of grinding of the product. The specific gravity of pure barite is 4.5 and this will vary downward, depending on the impurities present. The mineral has a white streak and a pearly to vitreous or sometimes stony luster. Pure barite contains 65.7 pct BaO and 34.3 pct SO3. Witherite, native barium carbonate, is not mined in the United States at the present time although a number of occurrences have been reported. A small quantity of witherite has been removed from a mine at El Portal, California, but the area high in witherite was small and soon depleted. The bulk of the deposit is predominantly barite. Great Britain is the world source of witherite and small quantities are imported into the United States. DISTRIBUTION OF DEPOSITS Occurrence of barite is widespread; it has been reported on all the continents and in all the major countries of the world. We remember him as a messmate, as a roommate, and when we rubbed shoulders with him on the square, for his kindly thought and unassuming manners. The Spanish grippe has claimed many from our depot. As we read down the names we pause here and there to recall some incident to establish permanently in our memory as a link to bind us, the living, with the dead. "And there's one name we cannot pass So we pause, and ponder awhile. And recall all his cheery words, And his smile—his perpetual smile." Men detained in the Quarantine Camp will have cause to remember him too, for he displayed his gentlemanly bearing and courtesy to all he came in contact with. Lieutenant Norman Lloyd Ohnsorg First Lieutenant Norman Lloyd Ohnsorg died in Nashville, Tenn., on Oct. 11, 1918. He mas born in St. Louis, Mo., Jan. 10, 1889, and lived in that city until he was 11 years of age when his parents removed to Iron Mountain, Mo., where he spent the next 6 years. On Jan. 10, 1906, he entered the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy at Rolla, Mo., and graduated from that institution in 1910, receiving both the Bachelor of Science in Mining Engineering and the Engineer of Mines degrees. In 1912, he received the degree of Bachelor of Science in Metallurgy, and in 1916, the degree of Metallurgical Engineer. After leaving college he wae connected with the following companies: Noble Electric Steel Works, Heroult, Shasta Co., Cal.; Mammoth Copper Mining Co.. Kennett, Cal.; St. Joseph Lead Co., Herculaneum, Mo.; Granby Smelting & Mining Co., Neodesha, Kans.; The Phosphate Mining Co., Nichols, Fla. While with the last company, he volunteered, in April, 1917, for service in the engineering corps of the U. S. Army. He passed an excellent examination, was accepted and called to Washington and placed in Division T. of the Ordnance Department where he was engaged in research work pertaining to nitrogen. He was then ordered to Sheffield, Ala., where he was second in command of the construction of the Government nitrogen plants at Muscle Shoals. After the completion of the plants, he was ordered to Buffalo, N. Y., on Sept. 28, 1915, to inspect and report on a government plant. After completing this work, he was called back to Sheffield. Oil production in north Louisiana in 1938 was 28,442,910 bbl., a decrease of 225,160 bbl., or less than 1 per cent, from 1937. The principal increases were at Cotton Valley, Lisbon and Zwolle. Geological Notes The deep drilling done in 1938 did not cause any important changes in geological correlation and nomenclature of the formations below the Upper or Gulf Cretaceous. TWO technical sessions, an excursion through the Midwest refinery and a smoker, marked the first day of the meeting of the Petroleum Division at Casper, Wyo., on Aug. 28. Ninety-nine members and guests registered and there was an excellent attendance at 'all functions. The -local committee under the general chairmanship of J. C. Lindsay, general manager of the Western Pipe Line Co., had made every possible arrangement for the convenience and comfort of the visiting members and the Program Committee under E. L. Estabrook, vice-chairman of the Petroleum Division, had brought together a most interesting series of technical, papers. The meeting centered mainly on the various features of the Salt Creek field but there were also contributions from the technology of production in California, the Mid-Continent, and the Texas fields. The opening session was called to order by Mr. Estabrook at the Townsend Hotel on Friday morning. The members and visitors were welcomed appropriately by Ex-Governor B. B. Brooks, president of the "Rocky Mountain Oil and Gas Association, who recalled the changes that had taken place as Casper, a frontier cow town, became a thriving oil metropolis. F. Julius Fobs, chairman 'of the Petroleum Division, responded and then took the chair. He introduced H. Foster Bain, Secretary of the Institute, who expressed the regret of those members members who found it impossible to stop over en route to Salt Lake City and his own pleasure at meeting with the Division in the field. Following these introductory ceremonies the technical session began with a "Sketch of the Geological Formations of Central Wyoming," presented by J. G. Bartram of the Midwest staff. It was brief and to the point and contributed greatly to the easy under¬standing of the succeeding papers by those unfamiliar with the region. The talk was illustrated by a large scale columnar section -and a copy of the excellent, geological map of the State recently issued by the U. S. Geological Survey.

Substantial evidence indicates that many petroleum producing horizons contain naturally occurring, ordered fracture systems and that within a particular geologic zone, vertical fractures induced in wellbores often will be directed along a particular compass direction. Both conditions will seriously alter the fluid displacement behavior within reservoirs. In this study the effect of induced fracture orientation and length on sweep efficiency is determined for a five-spot pattern. In general, it is assumed that all wells are fractured and directed along the same compass direction. Using the electrical analog to steady state, two-dimensional fluid flow in porous media, boundary conditions are obtained from which flood fronts are tracked numerically. The numerical computations require a particle tracking routine for approximating flood front histories. It is shown that recovery is sensitive to the length and orientation of fractures for the pattern studied. with the proper design of fracture-pattern systems, recovery can be enhanced considerably. INTRODUCTION Hydraulic fracturing introduced in 1949l gave the industry a rather inexpensive means of increasing the fluid injection or production capacity of wells. It has been used with particular success to increase the production rate of wells completed in tight formations, such as in western pennsylvania2 where producers have fractured in depleted or near-depleted fields and observed economic responses. Once the natural energy declines in such a reservoir where all wells have been fractured, waterflooding is generally suggested as means of further increasing recovery. Of the dual objective sought in waterflooding — high injectivity and high breakthrough sweep efficiency — the former condition can be obtained if all wells in the flood pattern are fractured; the latter condition should depend on the nature of the fracture system. Considerable theoretical work has been published on the nature of fractures induced in boreholes.3-5 Although discussion persists concerning the possibility of forming a horizontal fracture at a given point within the wellbore, it is generally conceded that only vertical fractures will develop below a given depth, i.e., where the fracturing Pressure is less than the overburden load. Given the fact that fractures will be vertical in most cases of interest, it is also important to know whether there is order to fracture orientations within a given geological region. Kehle has suggested that in tectonically relaxed areas of uncomplicated geology, the stresses are fairly uniform and all fractures in the region should be parallel.5 Dunlap arrived at a similar conclusion in a theoretical investigation of localized stress conditions surrounding the borehole.6 He concluded that most vertical fractures are propagated in a preferred azimuthal direction. Fraser and Pettitt, in extending these theoretical suggestions to a specific field case, used an impression packer to record both a vertical fracture and the orientation of this fracture in the wellbore of a well in the Howard Glasscock field, Tex.7 Use of this information enhanced the waterflood recovery of the field. Anderson and Stahl also used impression packers on three fractured wells in the Allegheny field. N. Y.. and found that the fractures were oriented more or less along the same compass direction.8 Orientation of the fractures in this manner depends on the stress condition within the formation during fracturing. Drilling for oil and gas in Missouri in 1935 was mostly confined to proven areas, but was marked by the completion of one of the largest oil wells, 53 bbl., and one of the largest gas wells, 2,000,000 cu. ft., drilled in recent years. A new oil pool, discovered in southern Cass County late in 1934, was further developed; a new pool in southern Platte County is possibly indicated by the completion of a single small well, which flowed naturally; and a deeper sand was developed in the Marota gas pool in Jackson County. Completions dropped to a lower level than in any recent year. A total of 73 wells, which included the deepening of 8 old wells, was drilled. In Bates County, there was one gas well with an open flow of 100,000 cu. ft., and one dry hole. Cass County had six oil wells with about 100 bbl. initial production; one gas well with an open flow of 500,000 cu. ft., and three dry holes. In Jackson County there were seven oil wells with 25 bbl. initial production; 24 gas wells with 7,358,968 cu. ft. open flow, and 27 dry holes. Platte County had one oil well, one small gas well and one dry hole. The oil well flowed naturally about 4 or 5 bbl. per day. It is rather difficult to obtain production figures on either oil or gas leases, but in cases where the figures have been given to the writer in confidence, they disclose conditions comparable with many other regions. One oil lease of 32 acres has produced 125,000 bbl. in four years, or nearly 4000 bbl. per acre. Another lease has made 50,000 bbl., or about 3000 bbl. per acre. It is probable that the total daily production at the end of 1935 was close to 200 hill. per day. A gas pool covering less than one square mile has made 110,111,000 cu. ft. in about 18 months. In this period, the open-flow capacity has been reduced from about 10,500,000 cu. ft. per day to about 3,500,000.

THIS paper describes some properties of steels in the composition range 0.10 to 0.30 per cent carbon and 1 to 7 per cent chromium. It is well known that some steels of this type develop high tensile strengths upon receiving comparatively simple heat treatments, such as ordinary air cooling from appropriate temperatures, with "or without subsequent tempering treatments. These high strengths are frequently associated with unusual toughness as measured by the Izod or Charpy impact test. The chromium content, in addition to imparting the above properties, enhances the resistance to corrosion and improves the strength and oxida-tion resistance at elevated temperatures. Moreover, these steels have good forging and fabricating properties, as evidenced by the fact that several thousand tons of seamless tubing have been made during the past five years from steels containing 0.10 to 0.25 per cent carbon and 5 per cent chromium.

(written discussion*).-The attention of members may well be called by Allen to his discoveries, which affect not only correlations in Michigan but, as I have pointed out,1 the use of names like "Animikie" which are widely applied. It shows that one disadvantage of the wide use of locality names is that local discoveries may show that they are inappropriate. The Wewe hills were found not to contain the Wewe slate! So we note that Allen, in his correlation, drops the term Animikie, which his researches indicate covers both middle and upper Huronian: It would seem well, then, in dividing the Huronian or Proterozoic, to use, as Allen does, terms like upper, middle, and lower Huronian, or newer, middle, and early, which may be shortened into eo-, mio-, and neo-Huronian rather than to carry local terms far away; or we shall soon be

The total creep of tin alloys containing antimony in solid solution was observed to decrease with increase in antimony content. However, near the solubility limit an anomalous maximum in deformation was. found, in agreement with similiar observations by Bochvar. IT has long been recognized that alloys may deform more rapidly under stress if there is a tendency for a phase change or other structural change to occur simultaneously. However, the phenomena involved are complex and in some instances the opposite effect, strengthening, may result.' This area of research has not attracted much interest in the western world, and although Russian investigators have studied it for the past 15 years their work has not received due attention here. Recently diametrically opposing views on one aspect of this problem have been espoused by two Russian investigators, Kornilov and Bochvar. The question is this: in certain binary alloys tested in creep at the temperature where the solute is at the limit of solid solubility, does the incipient formation of the second phase strengthen or weaken the alloy? Korni-lov's arguments in favor of strengthening were presented at the 1954 Symposium at the National Physical Laboratory, =Creep and Fracture of Metals at High Temperatures.The most recent statement of Boch-var's theory of weakening is in Oding's new book on creep and rupture.3 Although Bochvar agrees that strengthening occurs in some alloy systems, he argues that in certain alloys an anomalous weakening is observed. However, the extensive work of Korni-lov's group on creep properties of alloy systems has not revealed any anomaly of this type, but instead has tended to refute Bochvar's theory. This clear-cut controversy offered a good opportunity for a simple experiment to resolve the problem. The experiment and its results supporting Bochvar are the subject of this paper. However, it will be helpful first to sketch the present status of the larger question of the effect of a phase change or other structural change on plastic deformation. PREVIOUS WORK One of the first researches in this area was by Pfei1,37 who investigated the creep resistance of an 80 Ni-20 Cr alloy containing varying amounts of titanium. He found that the resistance to creep increased rapidly as the solid solubility limit in the alloy at 775'c was approached and slightly exceeded. With further addition of titanium the creep resistance decreased, presumably because of precipitation effects. Bochvar's first work in this field was a study in 1945 of "superplasticity" in zinc alloys containing 15 to 25 pct Al.4 He found that alloys quenched from about 400 had anomalously low hardness when tested below this temperature. The following year, in a paper on the dependence of mechanical properties on the composition and structure of alloys,5 he extended some observations of Kurnakov to predict that at high temperatures of testing the hardness values for solid-solution alloys might be lower than those for the component metals. 0. C. Ralston and F. Fraas—Dr. Sun and associates have presented an interesting paper not all of which is comprehended by us. The data assembled measure the deflections of particles in an electrostatic field as a function of a number of independent variables and some dependent variables that are not sharply differentiated. These data are all based on a Johnson type machine of definite, well-described geometry, something not often done in electrostatic separation literature. One new fact brought out by this technique is the effect of coal dust on admixed pyrite and quartz. The effects are opposite in character, as should be expected and we do not agree with the authors that these effects are negligible. Fraas' also used a multiple cell "distribution analyzer" and gives in fig. 5 of his paper a straight line plot with no humps or curves. This is not necessarily at variance with Sun's results because Fraas used a larger gap between electrodes and had no evidence of particles adhering to or dropping off the charged electrode. The section of Sun's paper on effect of surface conductivity contains a speculation that the dielectric constant "represents more or less the electrical conductance of the bulk body instead of the surface of the mineral particles." A simple picture of the meaning of the dielectric constant is that it is the specific inductive capacity of a dielectric when used as the dielectric between the plates of a condenser. It is at once evident that the above speculation confuses capacity with conductance—two definitely independent variables. We ask the authors to state in what group or subdivision their garnet belongs; what method and units were used in calculating the data of col. A, table I and their meaning; what was the temperature of the carrier roll and, finally, has any effort been made to investigate the effects of particle shape on distribution in the electrostatic field? S. B. Hudson—I have read this article with great interest. We have been engaged in research work on the principles of electrostatic separation in this laboratory for some time now, and our findings agree with those of the authors in many respects. The article shows evidence of careful and valuable research in the field of electrostatic separation. A "distribution analyser," very similar to that described in an earlier article by one of the authors," was incorporated in an inclined plate-type electrostatic separator designed and built in the Melbourne University laboratory in 1948 for investigation purposes.22 The actual splitting edges were machined from y! in. per-spex, and the paper hoppers were supported on linen thread immediately below the perspex dividers. These dividers fitted into machined slots in a framework to give accurate Yz-in. spacings. The hoppers (staggered) fed directly into a rack of test tubes, which is supported on a vertical pantograph arrangement. The rack was positioned with guides on the horizontal pantograph stand, and this ensured positive alignment when replacing the rack after making weighings. In later work, when much heavier feed rates were used, of the order of 30 to 40 Ib per in. per hr a rack fitted with rectangular metal containers and similarly aligned was used. Some work was done here on comparing the distributions of minerals when passed separately and when passed as a mixture, and it was found that there was quite an appreciable difference in the two results.= However, in our separator the particles do not pass down the plate in a single layer, and this difference is probably caused by collisions of one mineral particles with the other mineral particles. In most of the investigational work here, the change of the center point of the distribution is measured to establish the effect of a variable, such as voltage. Two minerals (zircon and rutile) have been studied rather exhaustively, and it was found that their distributions are very nearly normal. Owing to the sharpness of the distribution curves, the usual method of obtaining the mean or median was inaccurate, and was not used; instead the mean (also the median), calculated on the assumption of a normal distribution, was used to locate the center point of each distribution and proved satisfactory. The effect of polarity becomes very apparent in the plate-type separator where frictional charges play a very important part when using highly resistive minerals such as zircon. With rutile, a comparatively conductive mineral, polarity of the electrode has little effect. On the other hand, the magnitude of the voltage has a far greater effect on conductive than on resistive minerals. Shiou-Chuan Sun (authors' reply)—Thanks are extended to Drs. A "distribution analyser," very similar to that described in an earlier article by one of the authors," was incorporated in an inclined plate-type electrostatic separator designed and built in the Melbourne University laboratory in 1948 for investigation purposes.22 The actual splitting edges were machined from y! in. per-spex, and the paper hoppers were supported on linen thread immediately below the perspex dividers. These dividers fitted into machined slots in a framework to give accurate Yz-in. spacings. The hoppers (staggered) fed directly into a rack of test tubes, which is supported on a vertical pantograph arrangement. The rack was positioned with guides on the horizontal pantograph stand, and this ensured positive alignment when replacing the rack after making weighings. In later work, when much heavier feed rates were used, of the order of 30 to 40 Ib per in. per hr a rack fitted with rectangular metal containers and similarly aligned was used. Some work was done here on comparing the distributions of minerals when passed separately and when passed as a mixture, and it was found that there was quite an appreciable difference in the two results.= However, in our separator the particles do not pass down the plate in a single layer, and this difference is probably caused by collisions of one mineral particles with the other mineral particles. In most of the investigational work here, the change of the center point of the distribution is measured to establish the effect of a variable, such as voltage. Two minerals (zircon and rutile) have been studied rather exhaustively, and it was found that their distributions are very nearly normal. Owing to the sharpness of the distribution curves, the usual method of obtaining the mean or median was inaccurate, and was not used; instead the mean (also the median), calculated on the assumption of a normal distribution, was used to locate the center point of each distribution and proved satisfactory. The effect of polarity becomes very apparent in the plate-type separator where frictional charges play a very important part when using highly resistive minerals such as zircon. With rutile, a comparatively conductive mineral, polarity of the electrode has little effect. Muskat's depletion performance equation is here derived considering the expansion behavior of the reservoir hydrocarbon system and a simple fractional-flow equation. This nietkod of derivation leads logically to the two extensions that follow. The first of these is concerned with gravity segregation in a depletion-drive reservoir. The second is concerned with including an empirically determined tern? for water influx in the performance equation. The more general equation for gravity segregation when there is a primary gas cap and empirically-determined water influx is stated for completeness. These equations have been found useful in reservoir performance calculations in Eastern Venezuela. A discussion on the methods of solving these equations follows, and considers firstly the effect of taking finite intervals in the numerical integration, and sec-ondly, methods of incorporating the time functions involved in segregation in with the expansion behavior. The paper concludes with a brief general discussion on further extensions to the depletion performance equation. INTRODUCTION The two fundamental sources of energy by which oil is produced from a reservoir result from pressure depletion inside the boundaries of the reservoir and fluid encroachment across the boundaries of the reservoir. The wells in either case form low pressure outlets through which oil and gas may be produced by the expansive force of the reservoir fluids and associated encroaching fluids. When the reservoir pressure is higher than the bubble-point pressure of the oil, so that there is no free gas in the reservoir, these expansive forces are the only ones available for the production of oil. However, when the reservoir pressure is less than the bubble-point pressure of the oil, free gas is vaporized as the pressure falls. With both oil and free-gas phases present, the additional forces of gravity and capillarity may operate on the gas-oil system, as they have previously operated on the oil-interstitial water system. Gravity tends to segregate the free gas from the oil due to their density difference. Capillarity opposes and eventually balances gravity as the more extreme free gas and oil saturations are reached, preventing the independent move- ment of free gas until it is above a certain saturation, and the independent movement of oil when it is below a certain saturation. The type of depletion performance equation chosen for predicting the future performance of a reservoir depends on the amount of past history available. When the reservoir is somewhere past the halfway mark in depletion, some form of decline curve is often used. With less past history, material balance equations which incorporate empirical factors based on the past performance are often used. When, however, the amount of past history is small, the Muskat depletion performance equation will usually be used. The distinguishing feature of this type of equation is that empirical factors based on the over-all or macroscopic reservoir behavior are almost or entirely absent. Each parameter affecting the reservoir performance is ascribed an independent set of values based on measurements made on laboratory samples; that is, incorporating microscopic empirical factors. In establishing Muskat-type depletion performance equations, it is necessary to consider the reservoir as consisting of a number of associated blocks, in each of which the saturations and pressures may be considered uniform, and in each of which all substances have uniform pressure-volume characteristics. Thus, a primary gas cap can usually be considered as one block and an aquifer as another. Gravity segregation may be negligible for practical purposes when the rock and oil properties are adverse and/or the dip or thickness of the reservoir is too small. In this case the whole oil leg may be considered as one block, except in very large reservoirs. In very large reservoirs the fluid and rock properties may vary enough, particularly in the dip direction, for it to be necessary to divide the oil leg into a number of blocks, in each of which the relevant quantities may be considered uniform. When gravity segregation of the oil and free gas is not negligible, it is necessary to consider the space occupied by the initial oil leg as divided into two blocks, a secondary gas cap and an effective oil leg, in each of which saturations may be considered to be uniform. The total volume of these two blocks is thus constant, but the secondary gas cap grows continuously at the expense of the oil leg. Drilling mud rheological and gel property changes due to elevated temperatures frequently cause problems in drilling deep wells. A laboratory investigation of the effects of time, temperatures up to 3001; and mud composition on these properties was made with concentric-cylinder, rotational viscometers of the Farm type. The viscometers were sealed from the atmosphere to prevent dehydration of the sample. Gel strengths were found to be more sensitive than viscosities to changes in temperature and mud cornposition. The high-temperature gel strengths of bentonitic clay drilling fluids were not predictable from low-temper.atl4t-e measurements. At high temperatures, [lie clay flocculates. The floccu-lation temperature depends on the concentration and type of solids in the mud and the degree of chemical defloccula-tion. As the bentonite content of a mud increases, floccrrla-tion temperature decreases. Lignosulfonnte treatment raises the flocculation temperature. To minimize adverse high-temperatrrre effects on mud properties, the mud should be maintainted at minimum solids content, properly treated with. a defloccullant which is stable at the maximum ten?perature encountered and maintained at a pH high enough to insure activation of the deflocculant for the duration required. INTRODUCTION In drilling a well it is desirable, for several reasons, to know the effects of time and temperature on the rheological and gel properties of the drilling fluid in the hole. Problems associated with drilling fluids normally occur down-hole: so it is reasonable to be interested in the properties of drilling fluids at the conditions which exist down-hole. It has long been observed that high pump pressures are often needed to start circulation after a trip and that the "bottom-up" mud that is circulated back to the surface is usually more viscous than it was before "cooking" at the bottom of the hole for several hours. Burk-hardt' showed that a knowledge of rheological proper-ties of muds under down-hole conditions is necessary to predict pressure surges. He showed that the viscosity of a mud greatly influences the magnitude of pressure surges and the likelihood of lost returns. McLean et aL~ showed that the rheological properties of a mud under down-hole conditions are very important to cementing operations. This paper presents data showing the effects of time and temperature on rheological and gel properties of water-base drilling fluids. Measurements of gel strengths and rheological properties were made with two different concentric-cylinder rotational viscometers of the Fann type. One was the conventional six-speed viscometer modified to operate at temperatures up to 350F and at the vapor pressure of the liquid at test temperature. The other viscometer was newly designed to operate at temperatures up to 500F and pressures up to 1,000 psi. Tests with both instruments were made under essentially the same operating conditions. The new viscometer is shown in Fig. I. The extent to which geological carbonization has taken place in the process of coal formation is a fundamental factor in all considerations relating to classification, oxidation, deterioration, spontaneous combus tion, and especially in all considerations relating to destructive distillation having as an objective the production of marketable coke and by-products. Moreovcr, it may be readily shown that a striking relationship exists between the geological decomposition or geological carbonization processes and those artificially produced by heat. This may be well illustrated by bringing again to view some of the charts more commonly mct with 25 years ago, as in Fig. 1.' INTRODUCTION This review deals with the controls exerted by unconformities on the stratigraphic and areal distribution of gold (and uranium) in Precambrian conglomerates. The relations described are drawn mainly from Precambrian basins in southern Africa, particularly the Witwatersrand Basin. The mining industry of South Africa started in earnest with the discovery of diamonds in 1866. Gold was first discovered in 1870, and in March of 1886, two out-of-luck prospectors stumbled across what was to become the world's greatest goldfield, in the vicinity of Johannesburg. George Harrison and George Walker sold their claims for a pittance and were heard of no more. The Witwatersrand goldfield has been in continuous operation since that time, some 150 mines having operated at one time or another. Deep mining technology developed here has allowed operations to proceed to depths approaching 13,000 feet. The Witwatersrand has produced some 55% of all the gold ever mined, and currently produces 60% of the world's supply, some 650,000 kg Au per year. To 1971, the Witwatersrand had produced some $32 billion of gold and $2 billion of uranium (when average prices were less than $35/oz. for Au and $10/lb. for U308). At present prices, the annual Witwatersrand production of close to 700,000 kg would be worth about $10 billion. Uranium was discovered in the Witwatersrand in 1923.
