This paper describes an important function of mining in Southeast Missouri. The practice is a necessary procedure to prevent disintegration of the pillars. Although the technique is peculiar to this district, it might have application in other mines using room and pillar method. CONSIDERING the subject alone, this paper would cover only a mechanical treatise of pillar roping. Because the St. Joseph Lead Co. originated the practice, it is proper to give a short introduction to the company. It is also proper to describe pillars and discuss their purpose to justify expending large sums of money to preserve them after the surrounding area has been thoroughly mined. Because the St. Joseph Lead Co. originated the practice of back pinning with wedge bolts, patch plates and channel irons, and the pouring of substitute pillars of concrete, these too, are mentioned. The Southeast Missouri Division of the St. Joseph Lead Co. is the largest lead producer in the United States. About 95 pct of the present producing mines are in St. Francois County, which begins 60 miles south of St. Louis. The entire lead ore production of this county, at the present time, is mined and milled by this company, treatment plant capacity being about 22,000 tons per day. This area is also the oldest, lead having been mined at Mine La Motte, in Madison County, in 1723. Estimated production of all the various companies that have mined here is about 7,000,000 short tons of pig lead. Method of Mining The lead occurs in the ore as galena. Galena is found either in the form of disseminated or solid streaks, of varying thickness. Ore stratum is the Bonne Terre dolomite, which is about 350 ft thick, but almost all the ore is in the lower 100 ft. Ore is mined by room and pillar method in open stopes. These stopes vary in height from 7 ft to 200 ft, depending on the thickness of the pay ore in that spot. Back, or roof, is supported entirely by pillars. In a majority of stopes, after the loose scales are mined down, the back has remained solid for many years (fig. 1). Under ideal conditions pillars are spaced to form an equilateral triangle and are as small and as far apart as the height of the stope and the character of the back will permit. They vary in diameter from 10 ft to 50 ft and are from 18 ft to 50 ft apart, measured from the outer edges. In general, the pillars are approximately 12 ft in diameter, and 25 ft apart. The spacing is very uncertain because of the vagaries of the ore trend, the desire to better support breaks in the back, and the attempt to spot out the thinner ore by not placing one in the core of the ore body. Interest by petroleum engineers in the flow of three phases—oil, gas and water—in irregularly bounded porous media lies mostly in the performance calculation of water floods of reservoirs that have been partially depleted as the result of expansion of much of the originally dissolved gas. The authors present a method to forecast three-phase flow in complex geometry and explain the details by the use of a specific example of a five-spot water flood of a partially depleted stratified reservoir. In this example, the fluid and rock properties of a field given by Prats, et al,' were used. The computed results fit the field performance more accurately than Prats, et al, and Slider.' The time required for the high-speed digital computer to make the calculations, including the contributions from the different layered zones, is about one minute. INTRODUCTION The declining rate of discoveries of new oil fields in the United States makes the recovery of more oil from known reservoirs more attractive than previously. Water flooding has an excellent proved background for recovering additional oil economically. Accordingly, the main interest of this paper is in this type of recovery. In petroleum engineering studies, commercial interest in three-phase flow is mostly in the water flooding of reservoirs in which the oil has been partially produced by the expansion of dissolved gas. When water is pumped into these reservoirs, three-phase flow takes place. Although this paper is concerned with these conditions, the principles involved could be used for other conditions when and where they come to the fore. Many investigators have made contributions to non-empirical forecast methods using basic scientific engineering principles. Several of these used the oil in place at the start of the water flood and the oil remaining after a large quantity of water has passed through a core for key values in their calculations. Recently, Prats, et al,' and Slider have reduced assumptions by adding the third phase—gas—in their forecasting methods. Slider uses the mobilities in the immediate vicinity of inlet and outlet wells as an aid to simulate the resistance effect in the five-spat pattern of the flow of oil, gas and water. Prats, et al. minimize assumptions by using previously determined laboratory data for determining sweep efficiency in the five-spot pattern. In neither of these papers is the saturation profile continuously affected by permeability-saturation curves. Sheldon and Dougherty- recently described a method that employs continuously changing saturation profiles using permeability curves, has a minimum of assumptions and needs no prior sweep efficiency. The Higgins-Leighton method, described in this paper, has all of these features; however, many of the techniques are different from those of Sheldon and Dougherty. The Higgins-Leighton method, tested in May, 1961, is direct and easy to apply and requires very little computer time to calculate a forecast. The short computer time is especially helpful in the study of a reservoir containing many layers of different relative permeabilities. In the Higgins-Leighton method, the individual pressures do not have to be calculated, as the resistance to flow in each cell in the flow pattern is readily determined without the use of any iterative techniques. The saturation and permeability distributions are readily determined. These data and the shape factor, which is measured only once from the potentiometric model when mobility ratio is one, determine the resistance to flow in each cell. THEORY The authors showed in a previous paper4 that, as an aid to calculating performance, the reservoir can be divided into channels using the streamlines of a potentiometric model as a guide. See Fig. 1. This procedure also was used in this paper. The authors also showed that, by treating conduits as approximately one-dimensional and neglecting pressure gradients transverse to the main flow, the Buckley-Leverett equation may be expressed as The principles expressed by this equation are employed extensively in the three-phase flow, as they were in two-phase flow. This paper outlines the geophysical investigation of the area covering the Darrow salt dome, Louisiana. Surveys with the refraction seismograph and torsion balance failed to disclose the dome, but reflection dip shooting was successful and was confirmed by later drilling. Introduction The Darrow salt dome and oil field lies in western Ascension Parish, Louisiana, on the outside of a sharp bend and on the east bank of the Mississippi River. The dome occurs about 30 miles south of Baton Rouge and 80 miles northwest of New Orleans. Its geology, shape and structure have been ably described in detail by Carroll E. Cook1 and, except for the general features, will not be repeated here. The purpose of this paper is to record some of the interesting and pertinent geophysical data contributing to the discovery of the dome and eventually the oil field. The salt dome is circular in outline and comes to within about 4625 ft. of the surface. At this depth the diameter of the salt plug is approximately 4800 ft. The dome has only a thin cap rock of less than 75 ft. Some oil has been found and is being produced in Miocene sands above the cap rock, but most of the field's production comes from a narrow ring of wells around the east and south flanks of the dome. Producing horizons on the flank are found at 5670 to 5840 ft. in the Miocene and 6890 to 6985 ft., 7028 to 7060 ft. and 8260 to 8270 ft. in the Oligocene. The deepest well that has been drilled is the Humble Oil and Refining Company's Community B-5, on the south flank of the structure, which reached a depth of 10,013 feet. The size and shape of the field and the area of production are indicated on Fig. I. The line showing the area of production encloses all wells now producing and all abandoned producers, both on the top and flank of the dome. This line of production is shown on all subsequent geophysical maps as a direct means of comparing the early geophysics to later drilling development. Darrow dome occurs on the low, flat flood plain of the Mississippi River; it is protected from flood overflow by high artificial levees. The rich loamy soil supports a high degree of cultivation, principally sugar cane. Drainage is secured by many small canals and the water table of the area is at or near the surface. These particular conditions of topography, drainage and top soil greatly influenced the early geophysical picture, and the influence was always unfavorable. The dependence of the electrical and crystalline properties of silicon containing ion implanted boron atoms have been studied as a function of the incident dose, substrate temperature, and annealing tempera-ture. Hall effect studies show that the compensation due to defects is negligible after annealing at and above 500°C for a dose of 1013 ions per sq cm. Steps occur in the isochronal annealing curve for the sheet resistance at 300°C and 800°C and the mechanisms responsible for these steps are discussed. The range of the ions at 150 kev is 3500 * 5001. Electron diffraction studies on samples implanted with 150 ker ions show the existence of damaged (polycrystalline) silicon closer to the surface than the range of the ions. Etching and subsequent annealing of etched and unetched specimens suggest that the poly crystalline silicon is closer to the surface than the bulk of the distribution of ions. THE purpose of this study is to investigate some electrical and crystalline properties of ion implanted boron in silicon. Sheet resistance, Hall measurement, depth distribution by chemical staining, thermal probe and electron diffraction have been used to study the properties of samples implanted in a random direction with ions having energy up to 150 kev. The boron-silicon system has been the subject of considerable study'-7 due to its possible application in the fabrication of electronic devices. The implanted ions produce considerable crystalline damage to the substrate crystal before they lose most of their primary energy and come to rest. Fortunately, most, if not all, of this damage can be removed by subsequent annealing or by holding the substrate at an elevated temperature during the implantation process. Sheet resistivity measurements of the p-type layers produced by boron implantation into room-temperature silicon, reveal that the annealing occurs in a two-step process: the first occurring at -300°C and the second at -800°C.' Electron-microscope and low-angle electron diffraction studies of this damaged material indicate that the bombarding ions produce an amorphous silicon region about the trajectory of each ion.' At high doses, these damaged regions overlap and an amorphous surface layer results. Furthermore, the 800°C annealing step, appears to be associated with the elimination of this gross damage. The depth distribution of the as-implanted and also the annealed samples have been studied by an angle lap and staining technique as well as by Hall measurements.3-7 We find the experimentally determined ranges of the boron are less than those calculated by the Lindhard-Scharff-Schiott theorys (hereafter referred to as the LSS theory). Our results are in essential agreement with pre- vious results. In addition, we have made Hall measurements on samples bombarded with a low dose (2 x 1013 ions per sq cm) to minimize impurity banding effects, and find that deep ionized levels influence the carrier concentration and room-temperature hole mobility until the sample is annealed at temperatures above 500°C. Above this temperature, the data corresponds to that obtained when silicon is doped with boron by conventional techniques. We have also made a depth distribution determination of the crystalline damage due to the implanted boron by using glancing angle electron diffraction techniques. It was found that the gross damage depth distribution of heavily implanted samples is closer to the surface than the depth distribution of the electrically active boron. By removing this gross damage, without affecting the distribution of the implanted boron, we have determined that the 800°C annealing stage is not exclusively due to the improvement in the crystalline perfection of the amorphous material but also appears to be associated with the annealing of some point defects. These results and their relation to previous results are discussed in the following sections. The preferred orientation developed in extruded aluminum rods has been studied as a function of extrusion temperature, extrusion speed, and position in the rod. Duplex <111> - <001> textures were developed for slow extrusion speeds at temperatures of 75° to 850° F and for fast extrusion speeds at temperatures of 75° to 450°F. The <001> texture component was shown to be primarily due to re crystallization occurring during fabrication. At fast speeds and billet temperatures of 650° to 850°F, complete recrystallization occurred and <115>or<118> textures were found. The nature of the structure has proved to be an important variable in the production and use of extruded products. Data on the flow of aluminum and aluminum alloys summarized by Smith,&apos; Hardy,&apos; and Locke3 show that the extruded product may possess a deformed, a partially recrystallized, or a completely recrystallized structure, and there may be important variations in the structure from surface to center and from front end to back end of an extrusion. This inhomogeneity in grain structure and preferred orientation affects both the mechanical properties of the extruded section and its response to subsequent heat treatment. Among the fabrication variables causing these differences are temperature, extrusion ratio, and extrusion speed. Preferred orientation which develops during the extrusion of rods is of the fiber-type and, in general, has been assumed to be similar to that developed in rods or wires fabricated by drawing through dies, rolling, or swaging.4 Because of the nature of the flow of metal being extruded, this assumption may be valid for material near the center of the rod but probably is not valid for the outer layers. In most face-centered-cubic metals a duplex fiber texture has commonly been reported in which the grains have either <Ill> or <001> directions parallel to the longitudinal axis. Sachs and fichiebold5 reported cold-drawn aluminum (99.6 pct pure) to have a single <Ill> fiber texture, and this observation was confirmed by Schmid and Wassermann.6 Hibbard, on the other hand, observed a minor <001> and a major <111> texture in 99.994 pct A1 cold drawn to 98 pct reduction in diam.7 He concluded that the <001> component resulted from a small amount of room-temperature recrystallization. Dayal8 concluded that the <001> component was an intermediate component which disappeared at high reductions in 99.5 pct pure Al. Kostron and schippers9 found duplex <111> — <001> textures in extruded 99.5 pct Al, as did Gow and cahnl0 and GOW11 for extruded rods of commercial and superpure aluminum. Similar duplex fiber textures have been reported for aluminum alloys by Kostron,= Unckel,13 and Van Horn.14 The present paper is concerned with the variation in texture with fabricating conditions and with the nature of the texture components in extruded aluminum rod (99.99 pct pure). EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Ingots were chill-cast in cast-iron molds and machined to 3-in. diam by 6-in. long extrusion billets. These billets were upset to 3.125 in. diam and extruded through a flat-face 0.690-in. diam die. Quenching of the rods was accomplished by a water spray at the die face. The combinations of fabricat-

THE failure, or disintegration, of concrete in structures, even when the cement, sand, and coarse aggregate used have passed satisfactorily all tests and inspections, is not uncommon. Such failures occur even when proper methods of mixing and placing have been used and where, weather conditions were correct. In these cases, the origin of the trouble must be sought in the cement, therefore some additional mode of determining the quality of cement must be employed. The problem is to find a simple, usable; easily applied method that will supplement the standard tests. The solution of this problem in-volves a knowledge of the chemical composition of Portland cements, also of their constitution (or componental composition), as the behavior of a cement, when gaged, is dependent on the physical and chemical characters of the compounds of which it is composed, the proportions existing between them, and the fineness of grinding. It is likewise essential to know the character, behavior, and composition of the hydration, products of Portland cement. The most promising method of attack makes use of chemical, mechanical, and petrographic methods. Chemical, by determining quantitatively not only the usual constituents, but the carbon dioxide and water. Mechanical, by determining the fineness with the air analyzer,1 which separates into fractions of various grain dimensions all of that portion, which in the ordinary sieve test passes the 200-mesh sieve and constitutes at least 75 per cent. of the total cement. These fractions may be further studied chemically and petrographically and micrometric measurements made of the grains. Petrographic, by the method of immersion, and by making thin sections from test pats of both neat cements and standard` mortars.

Iraq Petroleum Co. together have produced more than 2,000,000 bbl. from all areas since 1927, most has been returned to the reservoir through the wells. Iraq Petroleum Company&apos;s small skimming plant at kirkuk supplies its operating requirements. Drilling Operations The Iraq Petroleum Co., since 1930, has discontinued exploratory drilling and concentrated on the exploitation of the Kirkrik field preparatory to filling its 84,000 bbl. pipe line. Drilling operations are on schedule and the I.P.C. expects to have its initial producing wells ready to turn into the line by April of this year. The Mosul Oil Fields Ltd., holding company of all the shares in the British Oil Development Co., after acquiring the "West Tigris Concession" in May, 1932, has completed a geological survey of its 46,000 square miles and is entering upon an exploratory drilling program with three cable-tool rigs. Petroleum in Iraq Transferred Territories in 1933* The Khanaqin Oil Co., which operates the Naft Khaneh field in the so-called Transferred Territories, has continued to supply the Iraq market with petroleum products during the period under review. The output of it&apos;s refinery at Alwand during the past three fiscal years ending March 31 has been as follows:

The commercial analysis of Special High-Grade zinc usually involves the determination of lead, iron, copper and cadmium as impurities in the base metal. Over the past 20 years, as the result of metallurgical improvements in the art of producing Special High-Grade zinc metal there has taken place a gradual exclusion of almost all extraneous elements, and the few that do remain in the final product have been virtually reduced to the vanishing point. Thousands of tons of zinc are now commercially produced annually and made available to the trade, in which impurities are present only in the order of 0.0010 per cent or less and the sum total of all impurities does not exceed 0.0025 per cent. To such zinc the term "super-purity" might well be applied without undue exaggeration. The techniques used for production control and final analysis of Special High-Grade zinc by means of emission spectra in the laboratories of the electrolytic zinc plant of the Sullivan Mining Co. are based on the premise that self-electrodes are to be preferred over all other forms for the examination of the zinc in question. Furthermore, after a survey of the literature and considerable experimental work,&apos; it was decided that the spectrographic method of internal control, the principle of which was first announced by Gerlach,2 using a modification of the high-voltage alternating-current arc source introduced by Duffendack and Thompson,3 with the calibration of each photographic plate as recommended by Wolfe,4 would yield the most accurate and reproducible results. Self-electrodes were chosen in order to make use of one of the unique advantages inherent in spectrographic analysis; namely, the rapid and almost effortless detection of elements other than those being quantified by the analyst; or conversely, the proof that the zinc is free from such impurities if no spectral line of the suspected element appears. This fact was verified for certain elements, and will be discussed later. Carbon electrodes impregnated or packed with zinc salts chemically prepared from the zinc to be assayed were avoided for a number of reasons. First, the chemical manipulation was another time-consuming step, which increased the chances for contamination. Second, none of the common zinc salts, such as the chloride, nitrate or sulphate, yielded reproducible results under our conditions, nor did the spectral line of the impurity appear as readily in the low concentrations as when using zinc metal. Third, no commercial carbon, except the very expensive, was pure enough to use with this grade of zinc and the continued time, effort and expense incurred in the purification of carbon were not desirable. The use of special High-Grade zinc self-electrodes introduces certain complications with regard to obtaining satisfactory excitation conditions, because it seems necessary to raise the temperature

A. E. LEE, JR. (author)—In addition to the paper we should like to make a few remarks. First, the seriousness of bending of the clay retort cannot be overemphasized. Not only did bending limit the length of the vessel, but it permitted corrosive fluid slags to concentrate in the belly of the retort and thus increased the possibility of boring. Bending also practically prohibited the use of cleanout machines and increased the danger of excessive fume losses by allowing furnace gases to escape around the top of the retort mouth. It will be noted that the Blackwell pottery practice places considerable emphasis on careful drying of retorts. Perhaps it is another smelter superstition, but traditionally the aging of retorts beyond a reasonable drying period has been considered important to long life. We are unable to give a good explanation of why aging should improve retorts. During the past fall in an attempt to prove a theory that the combined water in the clay decreased during aging, about 50 samples of wet retort collars were placed in a dry room when it was closed. Loss of weight, combined water and free moisture were measured each week over the 100 day drying period. The affinity of the dried retort for moisture makes difficult the accurate measurement of free water; however, there was a clearly defined free moisture change from about 12.5 pct when freshly made to about 2 pet at the end of 18 days, then a gradual loss to about 0.25 pet at 70 days and an apparent equilibrium near this figure through the 100th day. There was no appreciable change in the combined water. The change in weight of the average sample was, however, rather unusual, there being consistently a loss of weight throughout the entire 100 days. From the 63rd day on this leveled off to about 0.03 pet per week. These were small samples and certainly should have dried

The report describes scaled model experiments on the recovery of oil from porous sands by the injection of miscible liquids [solvents] and the subsequent recovery of the solvents by water flooding. Special attention has been paid to the scaling problem. Scaling rules are deduced and their correctness is checked by carrying out experiments in tubes of various sizes. Data are submitted on the effect of the viscosity ratio oil-solvent on the efficiency of the displacement process, the viscosity ratio varying from 1.5 to 5,000. Breakthrough recoveries obtained when flooding with kerosene as a solvent, are equal to those obtained in water flooding at the same viscosity ratio, indicating that he phenomenon of viscous fingering is decisive. After breakthrough, however, flooding with a miscible liquid becomes much more efficient than a water flood and this is more pronounced as the viscosity ratio oil-solvent is higher. Although high oil recoveries are obtained and most of the solvent in the sand can be recovered by a subsequent waterdrive, a straight flood with miscible liquids does not appear economically attractive because of the large quantities of solvent required. Therefore, a circulation process is introduced, the features of which are described in this paper. Though by means of this circulation process the amount of solvent required can be drastically reduced, the process is not yet economic. SCOPE OF THE INVESTIGATION The recovery efficiency by water flood of oils of viscosities exceeding 50 cp is low. As interest in production of these highly viscous oils is growing at the moment, it was considered worthwhile to gain basic information on the feasibility of first flooding such oils with a low viscous miscible liquid [solvent] and subsequently producing the latter in a conventional way, e.g. by water flooding. The method has the obvious drawbacks that return on the investment is delayed until water flooding has begun and that it requires the investment of a more valuable product to produce a less valuable one. On the other hand, it may be expected that the displacement of one liquid by another is more efficient when the two liquids are miscible than when they are immiscible. As laboratory data on this point are scanty, the present investigation seemed justified. Another argument for carrying out these experiments is that they present a valuable contribution to our concepts of the scaling problem in reservoir engineering studies. Some major difficulties which are encountered in the scaling of the waterflooding process such as the scaling of the capillary forces and the difficulty of obtaining the same permeability characteristics in the model do not present themselves in this case. As the fluids are miscible capillary forces do not play a role and as there is only one fluid phase, Darcy&apos;s law is valid in its original form. Consequently it is felt that the scaling rules can be deduced with a greater amount of certainty. Miscible phase displacement of oil from reservoirs has been emphasized in the past few years. The reason for this emphasis lies in the high oil recovery attainable by this process. Removal of capillary effects in the reservoir leads to recoveries approaching 100 per cent in the area contacted by the miscible phase. The miscible slug process is one means of obtaining a miscible displacement. Here a band or slug of I,PG is injected into the reservoir prior to gas injection. The idea is to maintain the band of LPG "wedged" between the gas and oil phases and thus achieve a miscible phase displacement. A second method lor achieving miscibility is through the injection of a gas which is not miscible with the reservoir fluid but which develops a zone of miscibility in [he reservoir through mass trans-ier with the reservoir oil.&apos; This mass transfer results in either an enrichment of the lean injected gas by intermediates from the oil or an enrichment of the oil by intermediates from a rich injection gas or one that has been enriched on the surface by LPG addition. We are interested here in discussing the process in which miscibility is developed at the displacement front by the evaporation of interrnediatcs from the oil phase into the gas phase. This process "builds up" its own slug of miscible material at the displacement front and therefore does not require the injection of LPG to obtain miscibil-ily. Each process has its own area of applicability. Generally, the high pressure gas process is applicable only with reservoir fluids which con-!ain a high concentration of inter- mediates. If the high pressure gas process is technically feasible at pressures less than 4,500 psi, it is probably more desirable economically than the slug process. The slug process has broad applicability in the shallower reservoirs and with reservoir fluids which contain a relatively low concentration of LPG and natural gasoline constituents. This paper deals with some new concepts of the high pressure gas injection process where it is proposed that flue gas can be substituted for hydrocarbon gas without sacrificing our goal of miscibility. MECHANISM Introduction Considerable effort has been devoted to study of the mechanics ot the high pressure gas injection proc-one generalization result-ing from some of these studies was that the composition of the injected gas is relatively unimportant in establishing the miscibility pressure* for a given reservoir fluid. This generalization is correct for the composition range of gases typically encountered in the field. Two such gases are a gasoline plant tail gas containing 85 per cent methane and 15 per cent ethane, and a field separator gas containing 70 per cent methane and 30 per cent heavier components. The most important factor which sets the miscibility pressure in the operation is the reservoir fluid composition, particularly the concentration of LPG-natural gasoline constituents. The injected gas is the agent by which the LPG-natural gasoline constituents are concentrated at the displacing front to create a miscible displacement. Based on these results, it appeared feasible that some inexpensive gas, such as flue gas, might be substituted for hydrocarbon gas for use in the high pressure gas process. A re-examination of the phase relations of the high pressure gas injection process should clarify the principle behind using flue gas (essentially nitrogen) as an injection gas. Three Component Diagram The phase relations of the high pressure gas injection process have been illustrated by the use of the three component diagrams.&apos;," In Fig. 1 we have arbitrarily represented the multi-component reservoir system by three components; methane, ethane through hexane, and heptanes plus. The solid curve ABC is the phase boundary curve. It represents the locus of compositions which have fixed saturation pressure at a fixed temperature; the lower branch AB shows bubble point compositions, the upper branch BC, the dew point compositions. Point B is the coniposition of the critical mixture at this temperature and pressure. The dashed lines (tie lines) connect vapor and liquid compositions which are in equilibrium. Let us consider Reservoir Fluid D which we wish to displace in 21 miscible manner by gas injection. Let us further restrict the discussion to the case where miscibility between an injection gas and the reservoir fluid at the displacement front is developed by gas enrichment in the reservoir. For this case, any gas whose composition lies between Points C and E on the right side of the three component diagram can be used to give a miscible displacement of Reservoir Fluid D. This is true because the more mobile injected gas moves faster than the displaced oil and is in continuous contact with virgin oil at the displacement front. IF the correct balance between fuel and air is maintained in an open-flame furnace,1 little chemical action may be expected between the products of combustion and the metal being melted. Physical changes in the metal are the object of the melting operation, and indirectly, under certain conditions, may be the cause of subsequent chemical actions. If sufficient heat has been introduced into the metal to bring about the change from the solid phase to the liquid phase, and still further from the liquid to the vapor phase, the metal vapor in all probability will be carried from the furnace by the exhaust and rapidly combined with the oxygen of the outside air. The charge being melted in the furnace may contain elements which are chemically inactive at normal temperatures but which will form compounds at the elevated temperatures of the metal bath, or even at a lower degree. Such indirect chemical actions are very confusing and often lead to incorrect conclusions regarding furnace atmospheres. In the open-flame furnaces used in the melting of bronze, the furnace atmosphere is spoken of as being either neutral, oxidizing or reducing in its effect upon the metal. A neutral atmosphere, as mentioned, is generally considered as the atmosphere of the furnace that will produce melted bronze, neither oxidized nor gassed. It is in effect an atmosphere which is not directly the cause of any chemical action. In such an atmosphere absolutely pure metals may be melted and poured without the absorption of gases or the formation of metallic oxide. The metal has undergone a simple, physical change.

APRIL BEGAN with increased disorder in the Ruhr and some blood-shed. The war cloud in the East disappeared, however, with the signifi- cance by the Turks of their intention to return to Lausanne to negotiate a treaty of peace with the Allies. The French occupation of the Ruhr continued during April without there being any spectacular develop-ments. Of course there was surliness on the part of the Germans. In the meanwhile the statesmen on both sides were intimating what they might give and what they might take, sounding the sentiment of their respective populaces. The British Government found that its revenue for the last fiscal year has been greatly in excess of expenses. The surplus was applied to reduction of the debt. A consequence of this development has been a reduction in British taxes for the ensuing year, which has naturally created a much better feeling in Great Britain. On the other hand the unemployment situation in Great Britain caused increasing alarm. At the begin-ning of April about 1,500,000 men were out of work and the thought was developing that this might be not merely a temporary emergency, but a long continuing condition. The uneasiness of the workers themselves began to be exhibited in increasing strikes and threats of strikes. There were important domestic events during April. The six miners who were on trial in Illinois for the Herrin massacre were acquitted, following which the State dropped further prosecutions on the ground that Williamson County is so thoroughly under labor domina-tion that justice could not be had there. The Supreme Court of the United States on Apr. 10 handed down a decision that an act of Congress fixing minimum wages for women in the District of Columbia was unconstitu-tional, being interference with the freedom of contract included within the guarantees of the fifth amendment. Advances of wages became more general during April. The leading event under this head was the action of the United Steel Corporation putting into effect an.11 per cent. increase in the wages of common labor on Apr. 16, by virtue of which the rate per hour was raised from 36 c. to 40 c. This was dictated by competitive conditions, the labor difficulties of the steel industry being due less to a scarcity of men than their disinclination to take jobs in that industry while the building and other industries were paying as high as 60 c. per hour for similar work.

Changes in length of copper foils of varying thickness and grain size were measured under such conditions of low stress and high temperature that it is believed that creep was predominately the result of interboundary diffusion of the type recently discussed by Conyers Herring. The surface tension of copper was calculated and results confirmed previous work within the limits of experimental error. Under the assumption of viscous flow, viscosities were calculated as a function of temperature and grain size. Predictions of the Nabarro Herring theory of surface grain boundary flow were borne out fully and the Herring theory of diffusional viscosity is strongly supported. ONLY a relatively few techniques for obtaining the surface tension of solids are presently available. Of these, the simplest and most straight forward is the direct measurement of surface tension by the application of a balancing counterforce. Thin wires or foils are lightly loaded and strain rates (either positive due to the downward force of the applied load or negative if the contracting tendency of surface tension is sufficiently greater than the applied stress) are observed. By plotting strain rates against stress, the load which exactly balances the upward pull is found and a simple calculation yields a value for the surface tension. The technique is of comparative antiquity, and solid surface tension values were reported by Chapman and Porter,&apos; Schottky; and Berggren" in the early part of the century. Later, the filament technique became fairly well established as a method for determining the surface tension of viscous liquids, and Tammann and coworkers,&apos;. " Sawai and co-worker and Mackh howed good agreement between the values of surface tension for glasses and tars obtained by the filament technique and by more conventional methods. With the increased confidence in the technique gained in these experiments, the method was applied to solid metals and the first reliable values of surface tension of solid metals were reported by Sawai and coworkers10&apos; " and by Tammann and Boehme." More recently, Udin and coworkersu-&apos;" have reported the results of experiments with gold, silver, and copper wires. Similar experiments with gold wires were carried out by Alexander, Dawson, and Kling.&apos;" The excellent review articles of Fisher and Dunn" and of Udinl@ should be referred to for detailed criticism of the foregoing work and for discussion of underlying theory. In all the foregoing calculations, it is assumed implicitly that the material contracts or extends uni- formly along the length of the specimen and also that it flows in a viscous fashion, i.e., that strain rates are proportional to stress. For an amorphous material, such as glass, tar, or pitch, the assumptions are quite valid and good agreement is obtained with values of surface tension measured by other techniques. The values reported for metals, however, are occasionally regarded with misgiving, since it can be argued that, because of their crystalline nature, true solids can not deform in a viscous fashion. If this is true, then the results reported for solid metals over a long period of years are of only doubtful value. Thus it is clearly necessary that a mechanism be established that would explain both the viscous flow and the uniform deformation that has been assumed. Such a mechanism has been proposed by Herring."&apos; Briefly, he suggests that, under the conditions of the experiment, deformation takes place by means of a flow of vacancies between grain boundaries and surfaces. This is a direct but independent extension of the theory proposed by Nabarro" in an attempt to explain the microcreep observed by Chalmer~.In a condensed form the Herring viscosity equation is TRL there 7 is the viscosity, T the absolute temperature, R and L grain dimensions, and D the self-diffusion coefficient. In its complete form, all constants are calculable and it includes such factors as grain shape, specimen shape, and degree of grain boundary flow. When applied to existing data, good agreement was obtained between predicted and observed flow rates. The theory received provisional confirmation from the work of Buttner, Funk, and Udin" who observed viscosities in 5 mil Au wire much higher than those in the 1 mil wire used by Alexander, Dawson, and Kling.&apos;" More significant were the completely negligible strain rates found by Greenough" in silver single crystals. Opposed to these observations were those of Udin, Shaler, and Wulff&apos;" who found indications of viscosity decreasing as grain size increased. Thus, complete confirmation of the theory was lacking in that the data to which it could be applied contained only a limited number of grain sizes. Hence, it was proposed that a series of experiments be carried out with thin foils of varying grain size up to and including single crystals, where, according to the Herring theory, deformation would occur only at almost infinitely slow rates.

D. B. DOWLING,* Ottawa, Ont.-I do not propose to start any argument, but really there is a comeback to what Mr. Coste says.1 Geography is probably not geology, but geology is geography. You cannot regard structure as geography on the surface, but it is geology as soon as you get under the surface. In Canada, it is quite true that they went too close to the Rocky Mountains. When boring in the foothills, as Mr. Coste says, they were too close to the mountains where they got into a faulted area, and if there had been storage, it probably would have lost a good deal of the oil. The situation in the Calgary field is one that might be interpreted in many ways, but in front f the foothills there is a very deep syncline. The gas and oil that is recovered on the edge of the, foothills is of such a nature that we must assume that it is not the pure crude oil. It seems to be somewhat refined, or a condensation product. The solution, or at least the argument that appeals to me, is that as the deeper part of that basin is, say, 6000 ft. below sea level, there must have been some breaking up of the oil on account of pressure and of the heat, and we are getting gas, traveling up toward the surface in the foothills; and as it comes up, it probably condenses again, and is caught in folds on the edge of the syncline so that we have a natural condensing machine there. The oil is not found on the eastern side of the folds, it is found on the western side. On the eastern side and on the summit there is a little light oil, gasoline, we will say, blowing into the well once in a while; now that looks like a natural condensation of the gas and a storage behind the summit.

and eventually we would have trouble. That is, these little localized overstresses may not be important if the structure is loaded a few times, but may be important if the structure is loaded many thousands of times. The existence of localized stress has been demonstrated by direct experimentation with delicate extensometers by the elaborate investigations of Coker. Localized stresses four, five, and six times those that we would get by the ordinary laws of mechanics exist in most of our structures. These stresses, ordinarily, under steady load do no damage but if they are repeated many times may start progressive failure. So far, we have seen no failure that could not be explained by localized high stress at a nick, a crack, a point where one heat treatment stopped and another began, or where there was local faulting, or any one of a dozen causes. In the case of drill rods, the actual distribution of stress must be different from that which any mathematical analysis could predict. It would seem that the spread of damage from the localized overstresses, so far as we can see now, explains the phenomenon known as fatigue. The Ideal Drill Steel By Frank H. Kingdon The essential qualities of a drill steel are: (I), It must be easily forged; (2), the forged bit end must permit easy heat treatment to obtain hardness to resist chipping; (3)) the bar or body must be stiff to resist bending or twisting and yet tough to resist shock and vibration, with resulting breakage, (4), the forged shank end must be easily heat treated to obtain hardness with great toughness. Minor requirements are that the bit and the shank are in alignment with the body; that the shank is of the proper shape and length and the shank collar or lugs of the proper diameter and length; that the hole is free from obstruction; that the striking end of the shank is flat and square; that the bit is of the proper shape, with the cutting and reaming edges formed full and to the required size; that the reaming edges are concentric with the axis of the steel, and that there are no sharp corners at the shoulder where the bit blends into the body. The essential qualities of a bit, are: That its shape be such that maximum cutting speed can be maintained for as great a distance as possible before wear of the gage and cutting edge reduces the speed of penetration to a point where a change of steel is made necessary; that the size or diameter of the drill hole corresponding to the gage of the bit can be maintained with the least possible reduction as the depth of the hole increases, and that the bit can be correctly and readily formed and heat treated.
