Current theories of fracture maintain that brittle materials contain flaws or regions of weakness at which fracture originates. The knowledge-feigning, theory- straining mining engineer." -Anonymous INTRODUCTION Taxes levied against mining properties and operations are a critical cost in the economic evaluation of mining investments. Indeed, taxes represent a substantial cost of doing business in the minerals industry and often have a significant impact on corporate investment decisions. A good example was the postponement of mineral development in the state of Wisconsin, primarily because of what was perceived to be excessive taxes imposed by that state. In many respects mining investments are no different from other industrial investments. Astute taxing authorities should recognize that geologic endowment is a necessary but clearly not a sufficient condition for mineral investments. The fact that a mineral deposit exists does not necessarily mean that it will ultimately be developed-a point that many taxing authorities fail to recognize. While it is true that ore deposits are not mobile in the sense that they cannot be physically moved to a district having more favorable taxes, corporate investment capital certainly is mobile and flows to ventures which maximize wealth to the firm. In short, higher taxes reduce project yields and tend to drive investment capital elsewhere. The appropriate type and level of taxation imposed upon the mining industry continues to be a very controversial and emotion-charged topic. Mining activities have been taxed at various levels over the years due to widely differing taxation philosophies. Location has also influenced taxation policies, as evidenced by the diversity of tax laws and assessment procedures applied to mineral deposits by the various states. Indeed, mineral taxation varies from state to state, from county to county, and from one mineral commodity to another. Whether or not a given tax is appropriate for a specific mineral deposit, or even an industry, is a difficult problem to assess. First, the type or kind of tax which should be imposed must be considered. Second, it is most important to define a fair and unambiguous base against which to levy the tax. Finally, one must consider the tax rate to be applied to this base. It is the combination of these two components

INTRODUCTION Summary of Factors Influencing Comminution Circuit Design The selection of an appropriate comminution circuit for a specific ore is one of the most important decisions in the design of a processing plant. The importance is related to the fact that the capital and operating costs for crushing and grinding plant generally represent, as is well known, the major portion of the plant costs. This chapter will, therefore, identify as many as possible of the factors which influence the selection of a comminution circuit. The number of factors which will have to be considered for any comminution project will depend, among other things, on the type of project. If, for example, the project is an entirely new mining development, then most, if not all, the factors identified will have to be analyzed. If the project is an expansion of a developed mining operation or if the new orebody is adjacent to a viable operation, then the existing operation will influence the choice of factors or design constraints which need to be considered. The existing infrastructure or supporting systems may be quite adequate to accommodate the requirements of any expansion or new development. Hence, those factors may not have to be considered. To cover, however, the widest spectrum of projects, the factors which have been identified in this chapter are those which will have to be considered for the most complex of projects, that of developing an entirely new mining operation. The range of factors is as broad as the range of different ore types. Thus, each development must be treated with individualized care. The most important step in the development is the analysis and understanding of the ore characteristics. The hardness of the ore, its abrasiveness, friability, moisture content, grade, mineralization including gangue mineralization, liberation size, chemistry, and other characteristics should be the first to be analyzed in the investigation. The next should be the determination of factors such as plant size, throughput, location, climate, accessibility, and availability of water. THE USE of the aeroplane in engineering work is quite recent. Its general application to all branches of engineering, including mining and metallurgical engineering, is increasing and its possible uses are most promising. Comparatively little has been published on the sub-ject in the mining and metallurgical press, and it is for this reason that the following notes are recorded. In March, 1922, Prof. E. L. Bruce published an article in the Transactions of the Canadian Mining Institute showing the possible applications of the aeroplane to preliminary geological surveys. In October, 1922, Mr. DeShea, representative of the Fairchild Aerial Survey Co., of New York, discussed the subject before the New York Section of the Mining and Metallurgical Society. The writer has been in correspondence with the Laurentide Air Service of Montreal and engineers who have flown. Canada, with its many lakes and rivers-favorable landing places, meets the prerequisite for successful use of the aeroplane in an unexplored and uninhabited or sparsely inhabited country. During the open season hydroplanes are used, and during the, winter season ski runners are attached to the axle in lieu of wheels. With skiis attached it has been found practicable to take off and land on any depth of snow quite readily. Winter flying in northern Canada is quite common. The Laurentide Lumber Co., appreciating the value of the aeroplane, used them for two or three years for timber cruising, and about 1921 turned their equip-ment over to the Laurentide Air Service of Montreal, who operate flying machines. The photographic and engineering work in Canada is done by the Fair-child Aerial Surveys Co. under a contract with the Laurentide Company.

EXPERIMENTAL results of the last decade have shown that both accelerator particles and reactor radiations produce significant changes in the properties of metals. These changes, called radiation damage, are important from both academic and engineering viewpoints. An understanding of the radiation damage produced by reactor radiations is difficult, because many kinds of particles having varying energies are present. Therefore, many fundamental studies are being conducted using accelerators in order to obtain nearly mono-energetic beams of various charged particles. Furthermore, many of these experiments are conducted at low temperatures in order to freeze in the radiation-produced lattice defects, after which the specimens are annealed to study the movement of the defects. It is found that although much of the low temperature radiation damage disappears by annealing at room temperature, a significant amount remains. Because there is no assurance that irradiation followed by annealing at a higher temperature will produce the same effect as irradiation at the higher temperature, and because there is an immediate interest in reactor radiation effects during exposures at and above room temperature, a major program is in progress at this laboratory to investigate some of these effects. This paper, representing a part of the program, compares the radiation damage to a group of metals which were exposed under nearly identical irradiation conditions. The metals, representing the three major crystal systems, include copper, nickel, titanium, zirconium, iron, molybdenum, and type 347 stainless steel. The effects of reactor radiations have been treated from a theoretical viewpoint by Seitz' and Ozeroff.' The problem considered by them has been the atomic displacements produced in an infinite medium by mono-energetic beams of both neutrons and charged particles. For reactor experiments, this treatment is not wide enough in scope, because specimens and reactor components are finite, and there are continuous energy spectra of the various particles. Therefore, the theoretical considerations will be extended in this paper to cover reactor conditions and the findings will be compared with the observed radiation damage. Experimental Materials—The six basic metals for this investigation were of commercial or higher purity, and the type 347 stainless steel was of commercial quality. These materials were supplied in various forms ranging from ingots to finished rods, and were fabricated to rods approximately % in. in diam and annealed for specimen stock. THE practice of dentistry, particularly the construction of artificial dentures and "bridges," involves a unique and difficult application of the precious-metal alloys. Appliances used in the mouth are continuously exposed to corrosive agencies which can hardly be described as mild, and must remain free from tarnish and be substantially immune to corrosion. Limitations with respect to space and weight demand high physical properties, while complexity of form requires ease of working. The high corrosion resistance required necessitates the use of alloys of high precious metal content. The usual expedient of resorting to mechanical working to produce the requisite strength and stiffness cannot be utilized because of the frequency of annealing and soldering operations. To meet these difficult conditions manufacturers of dental goods were early led, unknowingly perhaps, to the production of precipitation-hardening or temperable alloys. The excellent properties of iridium-platinum may have suggested the addition of platinum metals to the conventional gold-silver-copper alloys to produce greater strength and hardness. It was found that such quarternary alloys retained their high physical properties after passing through the usual soldering process; i, e., heating to 7500 to 8000 C. and cooling naturally in the air. Later it was discovered that they could be softened and rendered more ductile by heating to the same temperature and quenching, in water. These early examples of precipitation hardening, for years the common knowledge, of dental practitioners and laboratory technicians, escaped the attention of the scientific world and discovery of the transformation which was responsible for this hardening was discovered by the Russian investigators of the system Au-Cu, Kurnakow, Schemtschushny and Zasedatelev,(1) § although the optimum conditions for securing good properties in aged alloys were not given attention.

The trite maxim that man is a tool-using animal might nowa-days be amended by saying that man is a tool-choosing animal. The chipped flint, at first all-sufficient, gave way to hammered bronze, and that, in turn, to wrought-iron and steel. As our knowledge of metals increases, we learn to specialize; we temper and anneal; we alloy and intermix; and we fashion for ourselves a metal suitable to our necessities. The knowledge of the properties and uses of the various metals and their alloys has become the capital of every constructive engineer, and the currency of every intelligent brass-founder aid blacksmith. Prom year to year, the specifications of the designer become more rigid, and the steel-maker is forced to study more closely the qualities obtainable by changing the treatment, or altering the composition, of his metal. Of making alloys there is no end. We have heard much, during the last decade, of manganese-steel and chrome-steel, of aluminum and tungsten, of titanium- and silicon- and copper-steels, and of every conceivable union into which steel could be coerced or cajoled. Without denying to each of these alloys novel and valuable properties, it. must be admitted that, of all alloys, the one which shows the greatest range of adaptability, and has met the largest measure of popular approval, is nickel-steel. Introduced to public notice by Mr. Riley, in 1889, its field of usefulness has been rapidly enlarged, until, at the present day, the use of nickel-steel is as thoroughly recognized as that of carbon- or manganese-steel. The following is not offered as an extended paper on the subject of shaft sinking, but more as a description of the present practice of shaft sinking in the Butte district. The Anaconda company is sinking at present the following shafts: Badger State, Moose, Mountain Consolidated, Mountain View, Pennsylvania and Tropic. At the High Ore and Leonard mines the shafts are being deepened by sinking two compartments and will subsequently be enlarged to the full working size by raising alongside the compartments which are now being sunk. The following other companies are also sinking shafts: Butte-Alex Scott, Butte and Zenith City, Boston and Corbin, North Butte Mining Co. (at the Granite Mountain shaft), East Butte Co. (at the Pittsmont shaft), and the Rainbow Lode Development Co. Shaft Timbering. The shafts of the Butte district, generally speaking, are of three compartments arranged in a straight line, and the pump compartment is usually arranged for the use of an auxiliary hoisting cage, as well as for carrying pipe lines and electric wires. The Rainbow shaft is practically square, and of three compartments. The length of the shafts outside of timber will vary from 17 to 22 ft., and the width from 6 ft. 6 in. to 7 ft. Fir timber is used in all shaft work. This may be obtained from the Coast, when it is known as Coast fir, or from Idaho or Montana, when it is known as native fir. The native fir seems to be the tougher wood, but it is hard to obtain clear lumber in the lengths and sizes necessary for shaft work. Some of the shaft timber of the Anaconda company has been treated with creosote as a preservative, but this practice has not come into general use, as the ground of the camp is so heavy that the timbers usually crush before they rot. The size of timber most used for shaft work is 12 by 12 in., while 10 by 12 in., 10 by 14 in. and 12 by 14 in. are used for some of the special pieces around the shaft. The new Leonard shaft is timbered with 14 by 14 in. wall plates throughout.

INTRODUCTION IN the last few years, much study has been devoted to increasing stoping efficiency. The reasons for this are shortage of manpower, shorter working hours, operating regulations, and shortages of essential materials. More efficiency in mining methods is needed to offset these adverse factors. In the past, attention has been centered upon haulage, hoisting equipment, mill flowsheets, etc., but recently the spotlight has been focused on the cost of stoping and the cost of handling materials. Scrapers and scraper hoists have thus assumed greater importance. In order to make it possible for certain ore bodies to be mined at a profit, it has been necessary to apply assembly-line practices to the streamlining of mining methods. All cycles of the mining operation must balance, and the sooner broken ore is removed from the working face, the sooner another round can be started. Since the introduction of scraper hoists in metal mines more than thirty years ago, much progress has been made in their design and application. Alert operators are now constantly watching for methods in which to apply scrapers. The saving of manpower in development work and the changing of mining methods that once employed manual handling of materials are increasing vital wartime tonnages. Essential ores from newly discovered ore bodies are moving rapidly from stopes to reduction plants-because it is now possible to develop an ore body and place it in production with a minimum of manpower and development work. Today, speed is one of the prime essentials of mining. Everywhere, there is a concentrated effort to use experienced miners in breaking rock, in timbering, and in carrying out the various phases of mining that require many months of training. Much effort is being made to mechanize the working places because experienced men naturally prefer to work where the majority of materials are handled mechanically. In line with this policy, many new men are being taught the details of scraper work, because even green men can quickly become acquainted with scrapers and thereby release older heads to perform the more skilled phases of mining. In some places it has been found economical to change from one system of stoping to another that more readily allows the application of mechanical muck-handling equipment. Where blocks are worked faster, the cost of materials, time, and labor is cut drastically. This favorable situation allows more manpower to remain on straight breaking and timbering-or straight production mining. More-over, when blocks are mined faster, more floors can often be mined vertically before the mucking or wheel floor is moved. This results in several direct savings. There are cases where it has been proved that by working a given block faster more area, longitudinally or vertically, could be mined at one time, thus permitting the reduction of development cost. Activities, free energies, and heats and entropies of mixing of liquid Pb-Zn alloys have been obtained by the electrode-potential method between 400° and 650°C. The large positive deviations observed from Raoult's law are in agreement with the phase diagram, which indicates a wide immiscibility field. A vapor-pressure method was used to extend the activity measurements to 900°C, allowing the maximum of the immiscibility gap to be estimated by thermodynamic calculation. Data on the mono-tectic and eutectic points compare favorably with previously existing work. SEVERAL long-standing methods have been in use for the study of phase diagrams from measurement of the activities of the component metals.' The use of thermodynamic analysis for interpreting equilibria data is comparatively recent, however. Such analysis is usually undertaken by first evaluating the principal thermodynamic functions as, for example, the enthalpy, entropy, and free energy of the alloy constituents. These, in turn, quite often can be correlated with the interatomic potential energies and atomistics of the system, from which a clearer understanding of the causes leading to deviations from ideal behavior is gained. The present study of liquid Pb-Zn alloys is concerned with a determination of these quantities by electrode-potential and vapor-pressure measurements, using these values in calculations involving phase equilibria and to obtain a theoretical insight into an alloy system exhibiting strong positive deviations from ideal metallic solution. A considerable portion of the previously reported work is based on thermal analysis. Supplemented by optical studies of solid alloys, these techniques have revealed the essential nature of the immiscible mixtures that are formed. It is difficult, however, using the phase-

In considering so complex a process as the smelting of iron in the blast furnace, there is obviously no single method of calculating efficiency that gives a complete appraisal of the performance of the furnace in all its several functions; such a comprehensive view as is required to evaluate producing ability and manufacturing costs for a given furnace is obtained only by considering a group of efficiencies, each of which measures the performance of the furnace from a specific point of view. For instance, there is the rate of consumption of coke per ton of iron produced, which is probably the most frequently considered, and is certainly one of the most important of the group; there is the efficiency of recovery of iron charged; and there is the efficiency of utilization of energy, both chemical and thermal, in some respects related to the former two yet in other ways independent of either. In each of these cases, the calculation can be made on the basis of the actual input of material or energy, or it may be based upon a comparison with the minimum amount of material or energy that would be required by a "perfect" furnace; that is, an imaginary ideal furnace analogous to the perfect steam engine used in thermodynamic calculations, when this furnace is operating under optimum conditions. Moreover, the furnace itself can be considered either as an apparatus for smelting iron or, taking a somewhat less common point of view, as a gas producer yielding iron and slag as by-products. Some of these efficiencies are more useful than others, yet all are instructive; for a knowledge of them not only leads to good engineering practice from the standpoint of control but also discloses limits to possible improvement in performance and indicates the lines along which improvement is most likely to be profitable. Estimates of some of these efficiencies have appeared from time to time in the literature, but many of them are open to objection because they are based on data of uncertain accuracy or because they have been calculated without due regard to the thermodynamic principles involved. Moreover, so far as the author is aware, no general survey of the blast furnace comparing its performance in all the aspects mentioned has been made.

The results of repressuring (or gas-drive) have been very encouraging to the several companies doing experimental work along these lines in California. The most notable examples are the Shell and the Union Oil companies at Dominguez, the Marland Oil Co. at Seal Beach, and the California Petroleum Corpn. at South Mountain. The results of the Marland test at Seal Beach are interesting in that re pressuring was started while several wells were still flowing; also, on account of the high pressures required to overcome the hydrostatic pressure exerted by high-head edge water. The well first chosen for repressuring is about halfway up the flank of the structure and had been on the beam making about 250 bbl. of fluid daily, cutting about 60 per cent. emulsion. The fluid lcvel was 230 ft. from the surface and the top of the sand was 4393 ft. Tubing was run to 4000 ft. with a packer and the space above the packer was filled with water to balance the high pressures. Gas was started in slowly to allow the fluid to be pushed back into the sand, and required three days at a pressure of 1500 Ib. per sq. in. before starting into formation. The pressure was once built up to 1800 Ib. and the compressor was shut down for a few hours. When again started, the well took gas at 1500 Ib., and after about three weeks the pressure was dropped to 1450 Ib. The present pressures required range between 1400 and 1450 lb. Volumes as high as 1,500,000 cu. ft. per 24 hr. were put into the well. Increases as high as 50 per cent. in production were obtained in wells up-structure with very little increase in wells down-structure. Also, the water cut on one edge well materially decreased. After about 40 days the repressuring was moved to two wells farther down-structure and the well originally repressured was put on production. The result of this was a great increase in the production of wells one location farther down-structure, a rapid increase in one well one location up-structure, and a decrease in production of the wells farthest up-structure. Later the gas started to short-cut to the nearest well down-structure, nullifying to a certain extent the effects of the repressuring work. In our sessions devoted to geophysical prospecting, the greater part of the time heretofore has been given to the presentation of theoretical subjects or highly technical details by specialists directly engaged in the development and perfection of the various methods. This was necessarily so, for we wanted such information available for the benefit of other workers and for our members who were anxious to gain a reliable understanding of the principles involved, to enable them to form an opinion of the adaptability of this new technique to their special problems. The methods have now been actively applied by many reliable organizations for several years and in this period there has been opportunity for operating mining men, engineers and geologists to appraise them. We therefore felt that it would be desirable at this meeting to give some time to interchange of opinion concerning results from actual cases. Consequently, the Committee on Geophysical Methods of Pros pecting sent out letters of inquiry to numerous mining people, asking for frank statements of opinion based on results from geophysical surveys at their properties. We have received many replies, among which 30 or more are of specific interest. On the whole, the point of view is remarkably uniform. Except for one or two who were, perhaps, a bit irritated, the operating men who have replied consider the methods to be capable of yielding valuable information when suitable conditions exist. Their attitude is definitely one of tolerance and of confidence in the integrity and sincerity of the outstanding workers. There is, however, a very general feeling that the chances of attaining positive and trustworthy results are small unless the work is directed by, or at least carried on with the close cooperation of, a geologist or mining man who is thoroughly familiar with the local geologic and mineralogic conditions and with the relations of the orebodies to rocks and structure. From certain comments, I am inclined to think that some operators are not greatly impressed with the cheapness of the work. Probably they are not attaching much weight to cost per acre, but are thinking primarily of total cost in terms of significant results obtained. It is

QUESTIONS as to the methods of smelting ores and of obtaining metals I discussed in Book IX. Following this, I should explain in what manner the precious metals are parted from the base metals, or on the other hand the base metals from the precious'. Frequently two metals, occasionally more than two, are melted out of one ore, because in nature generally there is some amount of gold in silver and in copper, and some silver in gold, copper, lead, and iron ; likewise some copper in gold, silver, lead, id iron, and some lead in silver ; and lastly, some iron in copper2. But I will begin with gold. Gold is parted from silver, or likewise the latter from the former, whether it be mixed by nature or by art, by means of aqua valens3, and by powders which consist of almost the same things as this aqua. In order to preserve the sequence, I will first speak of the ingredients of which this aqua is made, then of the method of making it, then of the manner in which gold is parted from silver or silver from gold. Almost all these ingredients contain vitriol or alum, which, by themselves, but much more when joined with saltpetre, are powerful to part silver from gold. As to the other things that are added to them, they cannot individually by their own strength and nature separate those metals, but joined they are very powerful. Since there are many combinations, I will set out a few. In the first, the use of which is common and general, there is one libra of vitriol and as much salt, added to a third of a libra of spring water. The second contains two librae of vitriol, one of salt-petre, and as much spring or river water by weight as will pass away whilst the vitriol is being reduced to powder by the fire. The third consists of four librae of vitriol, two and a half librae of saltpetre, half a libra of alum, and one and a half librae of spring water. The fourth consists of two librae of vitriol, as many librae of saltpetre, one quarter of a libra of alum, and three-quarters of a Mbra of spring water. WHEN pouring concrete it frequently happens that space prohibits the placing of a mixer at the point, or points, where the concrete is to be used. Usually in such cases recourse is had to some form of pressure chamber, or concrete gun, to blow the mix by compressed air from the mixer to the point of pouring. Recently such a case arose at one of the western mines. The experience obtained there may be of benefit to others, not expert in the means of transporting mixed concrete, when they run up against similar situations. The first stage in pouring in this instance was a vertical drop of 100 ft. from the mixer on one level to the point where horizontal travel began on a lower level. Standard 6-in. pipe with flange joints was used, hung in the shaft space available. A standard 45" bend near the bottom directed the mix, with free discharge, into an air chamber for the horizontal stage of travel. With an air chamber at the mixer and pressure applied to the falling mix in the vertical section, jamming frequently occurred at the turn and the pipe would have to be taken apart for freeing. To obviate this difficulty the mix was poured slowly without the addition of air pressure, when it was found that the mix got through much better.

IN SOME research. work carried out by the writer, certain results have bean obtained which bear on the fundamental nature and origin of coal and the relationship between coal and petroleum. Without entering into a discussion of the details of the experiments, which were conducted on petroleum and derived bitumens, there are given here, by way of definition, some of the relations that the writer has established between certain classes of bitumens of petroliferous origin. Bitumen.-A natural organic substance, gaseous, liquid, or solid, consisting of hydrocarbons and the oxy- or thionic derivatives of the same, or of a mixture of all three. Diasphaltenes.-Those portions of bitumens that are soluble, in ether or carbon disulfide, but are insoluble in a mixture of equal parts of ether and alcohol. Diasphaltenes are produced by the oxidation or thionization of petroleum oils; they have, as the name indicates, twice the molecular weight of asphaltenes, into which they are converted when subjected to moderate temperature. For example, an artificially produced diasphaltene, which was readily soluble in pentane and ether, was quite insoluble in either of these solvents after heating for three weeks at a temperature of 100° C., and was converted into an insoluble asphaltene. Asphaltenes.-Those portions of bitumen that are insoluble in ether or ether alcohol but are soluble in carbon disulfide. Asphaltites.-Those solid or semisolid natural bitumens that are composed, for the most part, of asphaltenes or diasphaltenes. A pure asphaltite1 would be composed wholly of asphaltenes and diasphaltenes, but most asphaltites contain small percentages of oil and wax, which have not yet been converted into asphaltenes; they may also contain a small percentage of kerotenes, which represent the next stage of the metamorphosis of asphaltenes. Among the naturally., occurring oxyasphaltites may be mentioned grahamite; and among the thioasphaltites, gilsonite.

Marked improvement in the serviceability of sucker rods has been effected in the last two years, partly because of the insistent necessity for greater economy in the operating costs of crude oil production growing out of the general industrial depression and partly because many of the recently developed fields have imposed more severe operating conditions upon both surface and underground equipment. The latter is particularly true of Kansas, where practically all of the oil produced is associated with damaging amounts of hydrogen sulfide brine and where the method of establishing potential production demands equipment capable of being operated at maximum capacity without interruptions. The decline of flush production in the Oklahoma City field created new problems in deep-well pumping on a scale heretofore unequaled and the increased proportion of water it has been necessary to produce in the fields of the Greater Seminole area presented conditions that were acutely in need of betterment. The problem in the latter fields was complicated by the shift towards sulfide characteristics, which accompanied water encroachment, and it is probably true that nowhere, at the present time, are pumping conditions generally as severe as in this territory. The Mid-Continent district, therefore, has become the proving ground for the numerous materials that have been proposed for sucker-rod fabrication. The information that ultimately will be obtained from an unprecedented amount of field experimentation will pay ample dividends when the decline of East Texas increases the demand for the vast reserves of sour crude in West Texas. It is a rare occurrence in industry that the use of such a simple piece of equipment as a sucker rod presents so complicated a problem for solution. As proof of this, it is only necessary to consider the numerous types of sucker rods on the market at the present time and contrast this condition with that of less than four years ago, when it was the common aim of manufacturers to develop a single sucker rod for all conditions of

Both the foundryman and the theoretical metallurgist are now generally agreed that the anomalous "rising" or "bleeding" of certain ferrous castings of killed metal is primarily attributable to hydrogen. How and why the phenomenon occurs, however, have not been made clear. The following discussion is intended to harmonize foundry experience with metallurgical theory so that the foundryman may possibly improve his ability to prognosticate whether a certain casting may bleed or not. Bleeding, Rising, and Piping The "rising" to be discussed here is not to be confused with the action in rimming ingots as a result of the carbon-oxygen reaction, although a conclusion will be drawn that may apply to the art of controlling the rimming action. Only killed metal is considered, which includes both steels and irons. In Fig. I, three killed, chill-cast ingots are shown: a porous ingot whose evolution of gas during late stages of solidification has ejected metal through the top; an ingot in which moderate gas evolution during solidification has lifted the mushy central metal, i.e., it has "risen"; and, third, a sound ingot with good piping characteristics. The first type is referred to as "bleeding," and generally infers that a solid skin had first formed through which the liquid metal later erupted. There is no fundamental distinc- tion between bleeding and rising in reference to killed metal.* Porosity Hydrogen appears as a cause of bleeding because the gas evolution simultaneously leaves a porosity of a type traceable to hydrogen. Twenty years ago, Melmoth' noted that killed steel that rose unexpectedly in the mold, if returned while liquid to the furnace and heated further under a reducing lime slag, would again rise in the mold; but that if the ingot were allowed to solidify and was then remelted no rising occurred. A critical quantity of the responsible gas is therefore removed by the rising action. Melmoth associated rising with high silicon (0.7 to 0.9 per cent) and concluded that silicon increased gas absorption. Because silicon is a strong deoxidizer, oxygen must, therefore, be eliminated from consideration of the three common gases in steel—oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen. Butterworth2 later decided that pinhole porosity was caused by gases dissolved in the metal and that hydrogen was obtained from steam in the mold.
