For many years attempts have been made to develop a laboratory test that would serve to indicate the proper temperatures to be used in the various hot-working applications to which metals may be subjected as they are being processed from the cast ingot to the desired finished products. That these attempts have not been very successful is indicated by the fact that most of the temperatures in use today in these operations have been developed over a period of years by trial and error. In other words, the selection of the proper temperatures for the hot-working of metals is generally an art rather than a science. Our knowledge with respect to the behavior of metals at elevated temperatures has been greatly extended during the past several years. While most of the work in this field has been done at proposed operating temperatures of equipment, rather than at processing or fabricating temperatures, one outstanding fact has been developed, which is applicable to the entire high-temperature range; that is, that the rate of deformation to which the metal is subjected is of the same order of importance as the temperature. The failure to properly recognize this fact has greatly retarded the development of a suitable laboratory test for determining hot-working temperatures. Influence of Rate of Deformation on High-temperature Properties It is not the intent of this paper to survey all the work that has been done On the effect of deformation rate On the properties of metals. The importance of this factor, however, was shown by Zay Jeffries' as early as 1919, when he called attention to the existence of the so-called equicohesive temperature and to the effect of certain factors on the location of this temperature' Fig. I is a diagrammatic sketch showing the effect of temperature On the relative strength of the crystals and grain boundaries and the type of fracture that will res depnding On the location of the test, or Or temperature with respect to the equicOhesive temperature. Since the type fracture varies, it also follows that at temperatures below the equicohesive temperature the major deformation occurs in the grains: while at temperatures above, the deformation results either from the movement of the grains with respect to each other or recrystallization of the strained material occurs almost instantaneously, producing new crystals at the fracture. A spectrochemical method of slag analysis is descibed which utilizes fusion of the sample with a flux, then cooling and crushing to put all samples into a common form. The powder, is then fed onto adhesive tape and passed through a spark by means of a special device to provide very reproducible discharge conditions. Combined with a direct-reading optical emission instrument, this system provides speed and accuracy of antilysis heretofore unobtainable for. slag samples by any other method. THERE are many suggested methods for spectro-chemical analysis of slags. The most important are fusion-pellet methods and solution methods. In our company the fusion-pellet method has been used earlier, and is described by Lounamaa. W. H. Tingle and C. K. Matocha have made refinements of the pellet method.' A Committee of the British Iron and Steel Research Association has investigated different methods of spectrochemical analysis of slags. Its purpose was to formulate a method which would give the complete analysis in 30 min with an accuracy of ±3 pct. The committee recommends a solution technique, which was thought to correspond best to their requirements. The method to be described is a fusion-tape method. The sample is isoformed by fusion and grinding. The powder is analyzed with the tape technique. The tape machine and some of its applications are described earlier.4'5 The powder to be analyzed is continuously fed onto a moving adhesive tape, which passes through the spark gap. The sparks break through the tape and vaporize and excite the material to be analyzed. The most outstanding feature of the tape machine is its very high reproducibility. The concept of isoformation has been introduced earlier.= It means a pretreatment of the samples to make them uniform from the spectralanalytical point of view, i.e., cancelling systematic differences between the samples. The purpose of the isoformation is to reduce the influence of particle size, as well as chemical and mineral composition. Before describing the isoformation by fusion plus grinding, which is the purpose of this paper, a few words will be said about two other types of isoformations, i.e., grinding with buffer and ion exchange plus grinding as they have been considered during the application of the tape technique for slag analysis. Grinding with buffer might be a sufficient isoformation in some special cases, where the mineral composition is defined. The time of grinding must, however, be rather long, at least 5 to 10 min, even when using such an efficient mill as the Swing Mill from Messrs. Siebtechnik, Mühlheim, Germany. This type of isoformation is not recommended due to its limitations and due to the fact that the gain in time compared with the fusion technique is almost negligible. The principle of ion exchange plus grinding and some of its applications have been described.5 The following elements of interest in slag analysis can be determined in this way: Na, K, Cu, Mg, Ca, Ba, Zn, Pb, Al, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni. The very important element Si, however, cannot be analyzed with this method. Although the ion exchange isoformation for slag analysis cannot be looked upon as a routine method, it can be used for

Background Research on the respiratory health of coal miners has focused predominately on the relationship between coal mine dust exposure and ventilatory function impairment (Lapp et al., 1972; Jacobsen, 1976), on the prevalence of coal workers' pneumoconiosis (Lainhart et al., 1969; Morgan et al., 1973), and on coal miner mortality (Ortmeyer et al., 1974; Rockette, 1977). Lesser attention has been paid to the effects of other mining exposures. For example, underground exposure to diesel exhaust emissions (Reger et al., 1980; Ames et al., 1982,1984). An omission in US coal mining research, however, has been identified by the US Office of Technology Assessment (OTA) as the failure to study the effects of inhaled polyvinyl chloride (PVC) thermal decomposition and combustion products (Seltzer, 1979). These products may be released in the mine environment by cable fires, cable explosions, smoldering cables, and conveyor belt fires. In addition to the OTA concern, recent findings of chronic respiratory conditions and other health complications resulting from exposure to PVC decomposition and combustion products in firefighters (Peters et al., 1974; NBS, 1980; NIOSH, 1982; Wallace, 1982), and in survivors of several large scale PVC-fueled fires (Dyer and Esch, 1976; Wallace, 1981, 1982), add immediacy to the concerns. PVC decomposition and combustion PVC decomposition is initiated at temperatures far below ignition (Hartstein and Forshey, 1974; Wallace, 1981). Hence, exposures to decomposition products from smoldering cables may be important health hazards in addition to cable insulation combustion products. Hydrochloric acid (HCL) appears to be the principle toxic substance from the thermal decomposition of PVC since up to 60% by weight is released as HCL (Barrow et al., 1979). HCL is released both as a gas and as an adsorbant on soot particles (Stone et al., 1973), thus allowing penetration of respiratory defenses. In addition, laboratory results indicate that phosgene (carbonyl chloride), a potentially lethal gas, may be produced in significant quantities from electrical arcing of wires covered with PVC insulation (Woolley, 1971; Brown and Birky, 1980). Health concerns related to PVC Toxic effects resulting from high level exposures to PVC pyrolysis and combustion products in animals (Cornish and Abar, 1969) and in humans (Wallace, 1981) is beyond question. Analyses have reported acute, or short-term, health effects resulting from exposure to PVC decomposition and combustion products (Peters et al., 1974; Polakoff et al., 1975). Recently, however, several studies have found that acute effects are often followed first by apparent healing, and then by delayed chronic effects. This pattern of consequential respiratory involvement among persons involved in major PVC-fueled fires has been noted in firefighters, specifically the 1975 New York Telephone Exchange fire (Dyer and Esch, 1976; Wallace, 1982), and the survivors of the 1977 Beverly Hills Supper Club fire (Wallace, 1981). An obstructive syndrome (low FVC and FEV1) was seen in 15% of workers three months following fighting a PVC-fueled fire (Colardyn et al., 1976). Long-term respiratory symptoms seen in studies of survivors of PVC-fueled fires include the bronchitis symptoms of cough and phlegm, and lung dysfunction (Wallace, 1981). Additional support for the thesis of longer-term respiratory effects resulting from PVC-fueled fires is derived from the finding that four persons who initially survived the Beverly Hills Supper Club fire died within nine months of the fire of severe respiratory impairment (Wallace, 1981).

HOW have recent events affected the general trend in world mineral production? What effect has the World War, with its resultant boom and depression, had on the long-term trend of output? Have all of the principal metals and fuels been similarly affected, or have some boomed or slumped much more than others? The trend of world production of coal, iron, the principal nonferrous metals, and petroleum is shown in the accompanying chart, covering the period from 1882 to 1931 inclusive-the last fifty years. The curves are plotted logarithmically to show the comparative trends. In the lower left-hand corner of the chart is a slope diagram to aid in visually evaluating. the average yearly rate of increase in production; from this one can easily see, for example, that the petroleum production curve indicates an average annual increase of around 8 per cent, and that up to the period of the World War the average annual increase in copper production was about 6 per cent.

The object of this paper is to discuss the fundamental principles of ball milling and to present some observations which have been made in laboratory and plant investigations. The discussion will be limited to wet grinding of ores in cylindrical mills, but doubtless many of the principles involved will be equally applicable in the other fields of fine grinding in which mills of the same type are used. In the concentrators of the United States there are about 650 ball, rod, or pebble mills, operating or ready to operate, and these have about 100,000 connected horsepower. For grinding in cement plants there is about three times this connected horsepower, and other industries have an unestimated amount, all used for the general type of grinding that is to be discussed here. It is true that these figures do not represent stupendous amounts of power, but when one considers that ball milling is often the ((bottle neck" in a concentrator and that it often accounts for the largest single item in the cost sheet, the importance of a comprehensive understanding of the principles of ball milling can be appreciated. Much of the past literature devoted to the subject has been concerned with the Kick-Rittinger dispute over evaluating grinding, or with dissertations on ball paths and the closely allied impact versus attrition hypotheses, or with the exclusive consideration of certain specific variables, such as mill speed or circulating load, irrespective of the other factors in operation. Such subjects may be dismissed with but little discussion in what may be called, by comparison, a new philosophy in the study of ball milling. Briefly, this '(new philosophy" consists of using power as an index of the mill operation, and investigating grinding from the standpoint of set and induced varisbles, with emphasis on the latter.

The subject of the flow of homogeneous fluids—gases alone or gas-free liquids—through porous media may be considered at the present time to be fairly well completed. That is, analytical, graphical, numerical, or experimental methods are now available for obtaining detailed descriptions of the behavior of such homogeneous fluid systems of any reasonable geometry. Thus, satisfactory empirical techniques are now well established for the determination of the permeability of porous media for homogeneous fluids, the numerical magnitude of this permeability uniquely and completely describing a porous medium as a carrier of a homogeneous fluid. Considering this constant as known, the treatment of a wide variety of specific problems involving either the flow of gases or liquids has been carried through to satisfactory conclusions. Beginning with the simple case of strictly radial two-dimensional flow of a liquid or gas into a well under steady-state conditions, generalizations have been developed to apply for systems where the flow is not strictly radial, due either to a lack of uniformity in the reservoir pressures at points distant from the well or deviations from circularity of the external boundary whereby the fluid is being supplied, and finally, to the lack of complete penetration of the well into the producing strata. Satisfactory descriptions are now available for cases where gravity is acting as the driving agent inducing the flow of liquid into the well, either alone or as a supplement to the effect of pressure. The effect of acid treatment on limestone wells has been given a reasonable interpretation on the basis of the fundamental theory of the flow of homogeneous fluids through sands, as have the important features of the problem of water-coning. Then, too, systems in which the outlet of the fluid from the underground reservoir is of a predominantly multiple character may be now considered as in the domain of

Through wide experience at numerous mills in the United States I have found that there is a decided difference of opinion among the producers of steel as to what constitutes commercially sound steel. Some metallurgists insist upon having, for certain grades of steel, a so-called "open steel," i.e., one which contains numerous blowholes of varying sizes, and consequently but little volume of true pipe, although a central intermittent shrinkage cavity often extends well down into the ingot. Such blowholes and pipe are expected to weld up during rolling or forging, because their surfaces are not oxidized. Even if this be admitted, included slag particles and a high degree of segregation are bound to be present in the product of such ingots. Blowholes are the result of an oxidized heat, and all heats, unless made or finished in the electric furnace, are oxidized more or less. Subsequent deoxidation, or rather degasification, either in the ladle or in the mold, or in both, is necessary to reduce or prevent blowholes. As is well known, a greater yield of billets or sheets is secured from the ingot by allowing the formation of blowholes, but this is undoubtedly obtained at the expense of the quality of the product. Decided segregation of carbon, phosphorus, and sulphur, as well as small included slag particles, undoubtedly exists throughout the greater portion of all so-called open steel, and cannot be removed by cropping. The first requisite for sound, homogeneous steel ingots and blooms is therefore, in my opinion, so to treat the steel in the furnace, ladle, and mold that "piping" steel is produced. The line of demarcation between harmful and so-called "harmless" blowholes is practically impossible to define. Is it not, therefore, the better and safer practice to use means for the elimination of blowholes and correspondingly reduce the segregation and allow the formation of a well-defined shrinkage cavity or pipe at the upper end of the ingot? With the relatively cheap deoxidizers available at the present time, e.g., ferro-silicon, aluminum and titanium, there is no commercial reason why all steel should not be thoroughly degasified. A degasified steel being provided, the method of freezing or solidifying the liquid steel into an ingot, and the subsequent working into blooms and thence into various products, is of great importance in reducing the crop or scrap portion of the steel, due to segregation and pipe. DURING the heating of cold-worked nickel silver, the tendency of the material to crack is well known. The present research deals with this question, and may conveniently be divided into the following sections: Changes in these alloys during heating and cooling, determination of the temperature at which cracking occurs, effect of grain size, quenching cracks, methods of overcoming annealing cracking. The work is far from complete, in particular the influence of impurities on this tendency has not been investigated, but the results so far obtained lead to certain definite conclusions, which are of theoretical and practical importance. CHANGES IN ALLOYS DURING HEATING AND COOLING During the annealing of many metals at a temperature just below that at which recrystallization sets in, there is evidence of some change, the effect of which is to harden and embrittle the material. This effect has been most clearly demonstrated in the cases of aluminum, copper, brass, and nickel silver, and appears to be a common property of cold-worked metals and alloys, or, at any rate, the non-ferrous ones. The effect would obviously offer an explanation for certain types of annealing cracking, but the trouble is so much more common in the nickel silvers than in the other alloys that some special cause should be looked for. There is, however, fairly good reason for believing that similar cracking may occur in some of the brasses; D. Bunting suggests that the a brasses toward the saturation limit are subject to a transformation closely allied in nature to that known to occur in the nickel silvers at around 320° C. Although the existence of this critical temperature range was known, it did not necessarily follow that this transformation was responsible for the trouble under investigation, so the first portion of this paper deals with the attempts made to determine whether other critical changes might not occur in these alloys. This paper describes the tempetrature, solute (gold), and orientalion dependence of the plastic rleforlirnlion of silver single crystals. The virgin flow stress, To, and its temperatutre dependence incrense with increase in solute concentration. el decreases with decrease in temperature below room teiirperature and with increase in solute coucentralion. The dependence of 011 on temperature arid solute sontenl is due to the dependence of Ts on the two variables. An increase in ts, due to either the temperature or the solute conlent, results in a decrease of e11 in crystals of single-slip orientation and an increase of 011 in crystals of' (100) find (111) orientation. is orientation-dependent and at all the temperatures and in all the materials studied. The Leveling off of the engineering stress-strain curve in crystals of (100) 07-ientotion at a stress tl, is associated with extensive cross slib. The temperature and strain -rate dependence of tl are similar to those of indicating that a rate process is the cause 01 this phenomenon. The plastic deformation of silrer crystals of (110) orientation is multiple to that of crystals of single-slip orientation. THE work hardening of fcc crystals has been the subject of intensive investigations in the past 15 years. The effect of orientation, deformation temperature, solutes, second phase or precipitates, strain rate, etc., has been studied in a number of fcc metals.'-5 In spite of the considerable amount of work reported on the dependence of work hardening on the orientation, temperature, and solute concentration, certain aspects of the plastic deformation of fcc crystals have not been clarified. For instance, with the exception of a few investigations,6-8 where crystals of multiple-slip orientations have been studied, almost all the studies have been on crystals of single-slip orientations. Hence, a major portion of this study has been devoted to the dependence of plastic deformation on the multiplicity of slip systems and the enhanced possibility of dislocation interactions resulting from such multiplicity. Further, the abnormally low rate of work hardening observed at large strains at certain temperatures in crystals of the (100) orienta-tion 6-8has not been explained satisfactorily. It is the aim of this study to clarify this aspect of the orientation and temperature dependence of the plastic deformation of fcc single crystals. The work-hardening characteristics of single crystals of aluminum of ( 110) orientation have been studied at room temperatur "'12 and above." They have not been studied at temperatures where the virgin flow stress is dependent on temperature or where, in Seeger's terminology is important. The work hardening of single crystals of (110) orientation is of interest for another reason. As shown in Table I, the dislocation reactions that are possible in the (110) orientation are similar in certain respects to those that are possible in the (100) orientation. Hence, the deformation of single crystals of silver of (110) orientation was studied in the temperature range 100° to 900°K at intervals of 200°K. The effect of solute concentration on the plastic deformation of fcc single crystals of single-slip orientation has been studied by several investiaators.> In all of these investigations—with the exception of Ref. 20—single crystals of identical orientation have not been used, with the result that the orientation dependence of plastic deformation is superimposed on the effect of the solute. The paper deals with the investigation of two types of coreless induction furnaces, one of 60 cycles, the other of 5000 cycles. Nickel was used as test material and the absorption of oxygen by molten nickel was chosen for determining the influence of the frequency on the metallurgical characteristics of the furnaces. Dr. Herty's aluminum method, slightly modified, was found suitable for determining the nickel oxide content in nickel. Also an electrolytic method for determining alumina in nickel was worked out. The solubility-temperature relations for nickel oxide in molten nickel were determined approximately. It was found that the solubility of nickel oxide increases with the temperature. Comparative tests on the rate of oxygen absorption made in a 60 and a 5000-cycle furnace showed that the absorption of nickel oxide in nickel is an increasing function of turbulence, time and temperature. The rate of oxygen pickup in the 60-cycle furnace is about three times as great as in the 5000-cycle furnace. In the 60-cycle furnace the maximum oxygen content of the melt comes close to the saturation limit. Melting under an oxygen-free atmosphere prevents oxidation in both types of furnaces. The handling and disposal of mine water is a much larger problem than is apparent at first glance. Many more tons of water are removed from underground coal mines in the United States each year than tons of coal. In the old anthracite region of Pennsylvania the average was around 32.7 t (36 st) of water for each ton of coal produced, while bituminous mines average about 4.5 or 5.4 t (5 or 6 st). Water encountered in the mines may come from several different sources. In mines with light cover and without a firm solid roof, rain may seep directly into the workings. This is also true of deeper mines where pillar falls have broken the roof to the surface. The top under creek beds is generally faulty and broken and water comes through the roof at this point. Deeper mines are frequently overlain by water-bearing strata and pillar breaks and faulty top can admit water, while places running to the dip often accumulate water which comes up through the bottom. In all cases, except where passing under a year-round stream, the amount of water made is usually pretty closely connected with the weather-more water during the rainy season, less in the dry, although the deeper a mine is, the longer it is before changes in rainfall are felt. Another source of water, not connected with seasonal changes, is old water, accumulated over a period of time in abandoned workings of the mine, or from flooded adjacent mines. Here the water filters through the coal, the parting, or comes up through cracks in the bottom. Similarly, core holes, drilled to prospect the property, can be a source of unexpected water and modern safety requirements for dust-allaying water at the working faces can turn a pleasant working area into a soggy mess over the weekend if the system is not properly maintained and operated. Why water must be disposed of is obvious. If allowed to accumulate, sooner or later the mine will fill up, or at least it will become "roofed" in low places, blocking ventilation and traffic. With the threatened falling off in production of the lighter oil pools of the Tampico embayment in Mexico, a general search of that country for oil-producing regions has resulted in renewed activity in the region of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, one of the first districts exploited in Mexico. Since the drilling of the first well in the San Cristobal section by the Pearson interests in 1902, drilling has been continuous, except during 1917-1921, when practically all development was stopped by the revolutionary activity. Early in 1921, a drilling campaign was inaugurated for the purpose of testing out the known salt-dome poolfi on the flanks of the salt masses, rather than on their tops where previous tests had been located. On Dec. 7, 1921, the Aguila Co., with which are consolidated the Pearson interests and which has been the only company active in developing this region, unexpectedly drilled into a sand horizon at 3015 ft. with its Conception well No. 18. The hole was unable to handle the production, as a 1400-ft. string of 121/2-in. casing was hanging in the hole, a salt-water horizon drilled through at about 800 ft., was not cemented off, and 3000 ft. of 4-in. drill stem with rotary bit was in the hole. This well's potential capacity was never determined, but it made 7000 bbl. of 25" Bé. oil through the bit and Pin. drill stem, in one of its sporadic flows before sanding up, and thus proved itself capable of the largest potential production of any well on the Isthmus. The well showed salt water before caving and sanding up with the drill stem still in the hole, and will probably never be used for production. Wells Nos. 22 and 23, drilled nearby, have proved disappointments after making good showings of oil. In the spring of 1922, Ixhuatlan wells Nos. 28 and 29, deep tests supposedly on the flank of the known salt cores in that field, went into solid salt; No. 28 at 2250 ft. and No. 29 at 2400 ft. ' I. Natural-Gas Explorations. The rapid development of the natural-gas* industry in Western Pennsylvania, and the great economy which results from its use, both for manufacturing and domestic purposes, has led to an inquiry as to the occurrence of this gaseous mineral in all thickly populated and large manufacturing centers of the United States. Natural-gas springs are to be found in almost every State in the Union, and in many States gas has been obtained in wells sunk either for water, oil, or gas, or in search of solid mineral deposits. The occurrence of natural gas is, however, not dependent upon mere chance, as is popularly supposed, but upon the existence of special geological phenomena; this fact is now recognized by professional men and by many practical men concerned either in the exploration for or in the use of this gas. The desire among our leading manufacturers, to emulate Pittsburgh, has led to the sinking of many wells in many localities, in search of natural gas. Some of these wells are now being located and drilled under the direction of professional experts, but many more have been, and are still being located by "quack " explorers, who often depend upon spiritualistic communications, or the diviningrod, or by intelligent persons, who are ignorant, however, of the geological and physical conditions under which gas has already been found. The brilliant and very original matter in Professor Jeffries' discussion† should rank not only as an independent paper, but as a most important one. In particular, the explanation which it gives of the remarkable Sauveur phenomenon, over which so many of us have puzzled long and hard, is so clear, complete, and cogent as to go far toward establishing Professor Jeffries' hypothesis. The very leatures of Professor Sauveur's photographs which fit this hypothesis so exactly are reproduced in Chap-pell's photographs of steel coarsened under somewhat different conditions.' The ideas developed by these discoveries are so novel that convenicnce of language seems to call for new conventional terms for expressing them. In what follows here I propose certain terms for this end, for criticism and improvement, and I attempt to generalize from Professor Jeffries' hypotheses. Generally speaking, a given set of grains which undergo no growth in the cold will, when the temperature is raised progrcssively, start to grow on reaching a certain temperature, and will continue growing at all higher temperatures. The "germinative" temperature is that at which growth begins, quite as the conditions which cause a seed to grow are "germinative." We have then an inert temperature range below the germinative temperature, and a growth range above it, the germinative temperature being the limit between these two ranges. So, too, a germinant grain is one which is at its germinative temperature, and hence beginning to grow, while inert grains are those below their own germinative temperature, and the term "growing grains" includes those which are germinant and those which are above their germinative temperature. These last could be called " supergerminant" if the distinction should be needed. "Germinative temperature" seems better than "critical temperature

amounted to about 2000 metric tons. The total output is increasing from year to year. Marine salt is now produced in Haiti in quantity sufficient to supply nearly all the requirements of this Republic, so production tax is now collected. Central America Guatemala-The major production of salt in Guatemala is solar salt derived from sea water, but the Indian population prefers salt derived by boiling coastal marine earth. Salt is taxed by the Government. The industry has been beset by controversies in recent years, especially following the revolution of October 1944. The Government issued a decree in August 1940 designed to control production and price of salt. The creation of a salt consortium was provided for and marketing was to be governed by production quotas. It is understood that the Government pool was later dissolved and the industry is now under older laws whereby production and sales have no limits. South America Panama-Output of salt in Panama in a very recent year was 11,000 net tons of solar-evaporated sea salt. A Government bank is in charge of output and distribution of the product. Colombia-Rock-salt deposits are known in five places-Zipaquira, Nemocon, and Sesquile, in the Department of Cundinamarca, the Cumural y Upin near Restrepo, and San Miguel y Barital, near Medina in Meta Intendency. The latter deposit never has been worked on account of its inaccessibility. Saline springs are worked in four locations. The largest producer among marine salinas is Manare but it is now planned to make Bahia Honda the largest. Some evaporated salt is made in vacuum pans. The deposits at Zipaquira, Nemocon, and Sesquile are believed to occur in the domal type of deposit. All the salt resources are under Government control. Venezuela-The salt industry in Venezuela is under Government control and is taxed. Taxes in recent years, however, have been reduced for salt used in curing hides and salting meats, fish and fish products. Production has approximated 25,000 metric tons yearly but may now be considerably above that figure. The basin on the peninsula of Araya, State of Sucre, which at present is the only important source of salt, could produce at least 175,000 metric tons if more ground were provided-a larger supply than the entire country could consume. This unique landlocked basin of nearly 1000 acres lies 12 ft below sea level. Ecuador-Salt is a Government monopoly in Ecuador and is produced chiefly by solar evaporation close to the shore. The main producing center is on the Santa Elena peninsula, which supplies about 90 pct of the salt. Small fields are at Punta Arenas, Payana, and Chara-

This paper deals specifically with heading-driving as distinguished from the broader term tunnel-driving. A heading is a pilot or path-finder for the main tunnel. Some headings are complete tunnels in themselves; that is, conditions at times warrant driving a heading the full diameter of the proposed tunnel. A tunnel 10 ft. in diameter might be driven to advantage through a single heading, provided the nature of the material admits, but it usually pays to drive rock tunnels of large diameter through the heading-and-bench system. Much depends upon the material, as in soft ground tunnels of much larger diameter are driven in a single heading. In mines, the tunnels, drifts, cross-cuts, adits, etc., are usually of small diameter, hence the driving of headings applies to completed tunnels in mining-work, except, of course, in cases like drainage-tunnels and main entries leading into coal-mines, where conditions call for tunnels of large diameter, approximating those driven for railway-service. In building aqueducts the tunnels are driven from 6 to 8 ft. in diameter up to 15 or 20 ft., while in railway-service the dimensions vary from 18 to 30 ft. in diameter. There is no department of rock-excavation so difficult as that of heading-driving. This work also belongs to the most expensive class in rock-excavation. A heading is driven directly in the solid. There are no lines of lesser resistance towards which to direct the energy of the blast, but the material must be blown out by main force. The completion of the heading simplifies all the rest of the work of excavation. It is easy, for instance, to enlarge a heading either from above, below or on the sides, by breaking towards the open face through holes approximately at right angles to the axis of the heading; or the enlargement sometimes takes place by holes driven outside of the heading running approximately parallel with it, the rock

THE publication of the report by Mr. F. L. Ransome was welcomed by many engineers who had mined in the heart of the Sail Juan country, braved its long and snowy winters, climbed its lofty peaks, run the gauntlet of its snow-slides, and studied its problems of geology, while making dividends for their English or American clients. This report helps one to understand why the bonanzas occurred, and why the inevitable borrasca presents itself where least expected. The Red Mountain district of Ouray county, a very productive section from 1884 to 1893, occupies considerable space in the report mentioned.. The character of the ore-occurrence, being distinctive and presenting many features not existing elsewhere, has been deserving of special study. It is to be regretted that Mr. Ransome was .unable to observe the conditions underground, as all the principal properties, many of which I opened and developed, were closed at the time of his investigation: It has been my privilege to have contributed a few brief papers recording my observations in developing these properties ; and it is the object of the present paper to present certain sections of the Yankee Girl mine, which throw additional light on the geology of the section and make the available data more complete. The main Yankee Girl chimney or " stock" was the most productive for the first 500 ft. in depth of any chimney in the district.

The development of residual stress in strip during rolling has not been systematically studied. A few scattered papers1 -3 mention the existence of residual stresses in rolled strip or touch upon some of their consequences,4 but there is no report of experimental studies in the literature describing the effect of roll diameter, strip thickness, reduction per pass, metal or metal temper on the magnitude of residual stresses developed in strip. A knowledge of the effect of these factors is of utmost importance since the present trend in some mills to roll thicker castings brings the rolling operation directly into that set of conditions which, as will be brought out in the present paper, can develop residual stresses of a high order of magnitude. Fundamentally, residual stresses are developed when a metal is inhomogeneously unloaded from a plastic stress state. A quantitative treatment of the problem requires a reasonably complete understanding of both the plastic stress state existing in the metal during deformation and the elastic stress state that would exist in the metal if the metal deformed as a perfectly elastic body. Our knowledge of either state during rolling is so meager that we can make no more than certain limited predictions. The external stress state* operating between the roll and the metal consists of Fig i—External stress state operating on metal being rolled (after siebel and LUEG5) compressive stresses acting almost perpendicularly to the strip surface but varying in intensity both across the width of the strip and along the length of contact between the roll and the strip. An example of such a stress distribution is shown in Fig I. The nature of the internal stress state, produced by this distribution, is not known. Various investigators,5-7 however, have felt that a qualitative similarity must exist between the internal stress state so produced and that produced in a wide strip that is compressed between two flat-nosed punches. In the latter case the external stress state is represented by a uniformly distributed compressive stress acting per-pendicularly over the face of the tool. The

Dimension stone is a term applied to stone sold in blocks or slabs of specified shapes and usually of specified sizes, contrasted with crushed, broken and pulverized stone covered in another chapter. Dimension stone includes cut stone, rough building stone, ashlar,* rubble, monumental stone, paving blocks, curbing, flagging, and many types of ornaments and novelties carved from stone. Riprap-large, irregular blocks used for shore protection-is classed with crushed and broken stone. Composition, Varieties, and Properties Dimension stones are of many kinds. The principal varieties are granites, trap rock (diabase, basalt, and gabbro), sandstone, limestone, and marble. Slate is covered in a separate chapter. Granite is a visibly granular crystalline rock consisting essentially of feldspar, quartz, and mica or hornblende. The basaltic rocks are darker in color than the granites. They contain little or no quartz and consist largely of plagioclase feldspar, augite, pyroxene, and hornblende. They are classed commercially as black granites. Limestone consists essentially of calcium carbonate. Dolomites and magnesian limestones used as dimension stone are classed with the high-calcium limestones. Marble is a crystalline form of limestone, but in the trade, any carbonate rock which will take a polish is called a marble. Many limestones which are fossiliferous but which will take a polish are sold as a decorative stone for lobbies of hotels and office buildings. Sandstone consists essentially of silica in the form of sand grains cemented into a coherent mass. Although rock occurrences are numerous and widespread, the exacting requirements of use condemn all but a small fraction of them for commercial use as dimension stone. No deposit that has closely spaced joints or planes of weakness can be used because sound blocks of moderate to large size are demanded. Uniform texture and grain size, constant and attractive colors or color pattern, and freedom from impurities that may cause stains or deterioration usually are demanded. Hardness is a variable property. Granites and diabases are as hard as or harder than steel, while limestones and marbles may be scratched with a knife. The hardness of sandstone depends upon the degree of cohesion of the grains. Workability depends to a considerable extent on hardness, but the degree of hardness has little influence on use except where stones are subjected to abrasion as on steps or floors. "Texture" as applied to stone relates to the arrangement, uniformity, and size of the constituent grains. Stones are of many colors and thus can satisfy a variety of tastes. For monumental stone, a marked contrast between polished and tooled surfaces is preferred in order that inscriptions may be read easily. Strength requirements usually may be disregarded because any sound structural stone suitable in other respects is almost invariably many times as strong as would be required for any ordinary use. The pressure on the base course of the Washington Monument, Washington, D. C., is less than 700 psi, and highgrade granites, limestones, sandstones, and marbles will sustain a crushing load of 10,000 to 25,000 psi. A structure made of stone with a crushing strength of 15,000 psi would have to be nearly 21h miles high before crushing of the lower courses would occur.
