The normal method of preparing metallic alloys for commercial use involves the preparation of a melt containing the given components in the chosen proportions and allowing the homogeneous liquid mass to solidify in a mold of the desired form. The solidification is frequently accompanied by a segregation of the alloying elements in different parts of the casting. When the segregation is occasioned primarily by marked differences in density of the solid and liquid phases, it is termed "gravity" segregation. When the segregation conforms to a selective freezing in harmony with the teachings of the equilibrium diagram of the alloy system—i.e., the lower melting phases are concentrated in the regions of the casting last to freeze—it is often referred to as "normal" segregation. However, in many cases the lower-melting part of the system is concentrated in the parts of the casting first to freeze and the result in this case is termed "inverse" segregation. To complete the terminology of the subject, normal segregation in a single phase is usually called "coring" and the word will be used in that sense in this paper. Inverse segregation, particularly when the liquid phase is exuded or sweated out on the surface of the casting, is sometimes called "liquation." Unfortunately, some ambiguity has arisen from the use of this term and it is perhaps advisable to confine its use to the dictionary definition; namely, "The separation of two phases by heat sufficient to melt one but not the other." The gravity and normal types of segregation are both well understood and to some extent, are controllable by taking advantage of the most favorable cooling rate for a given casting condition. Inverse segregation has received considerable attention from several investigators but none of the theories offered seem to account in a convincing way for the many examples of this type. Our task is to make a prospecting trip over the whole field of mineral economics which other lectures of this series will explore in detail. The old timers who really understand mining warn us that its economic aspects are often neglected, and this we find to be true. We shall try to show that mineral economics deserves recognition as a separate branch of economic science with urgent and distinctive problems of its own; that to cultivate it requires a fusing of the viewpoint of economics with that of geology and engineering; and that the help of both economists and technical men is needed in exploring its problems and in training workers in the field. To save time, we shall pass over the familiar subjects of production, consumption, and distribution which bulk as large in the market analysis of the minerals as they do in other commodities. The existence of these problems may be taken for granted and attention centered rather upon those that differentiate mining from other branches of industry. What then is the case for an economics of minerals? Why set up a new compartment in a branch of knowledge that is already well subdivided? The operating plant of The Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd. is situated at Port Pirie in South Australia and it treats to finality the whole output of lead concentrates from the mines of The Zinc Corporation Ltd., North Broken Hill Ltd., and aroken Hill South Ltd. at Broken Hill, New South Wales. Lead bearing ores from other sources are also purchased for treatment and lead scrap and residues are treated on a toll charge basis. The present output of the plant is approximately 200000 tonnes of refined lead per annum and there is a substantial production of by-products including refined silver, gold, cadmium, antimonial lead alloys, copper matte and sulphuric acid. Recently the Company commenced the production of zinc by slag fuming and electrolysis from a six million ton dump of lead blast furnace slag, which has been accumulating at Port Pirie for over fifty years. The slag fuming plant contains two furnaces of conventional design, but features a high degree of pre-heat for the blast air and this is obtained by the use of all-metal recuperators. The raw zinc oxide fume produced by the plant is roasted in a rotary kiln prior to treatment in the leaching and electrolysis sections, which follow conventional practice for nigh current density plants. Present output is approximately 36000 tonnes of electrolytic zinc per annum.

Some attention should be given to definitions. The term "unit operation " may have at least two meanings. One meaning is the merging of titles and the development and operation of the unitized area, as if it were one tract of land held under a single oil and gas lease, according to a definite program intended to accomplish a maximum recovery from the pool as a whole at a minimum of cost. It is incomplete when the royalty owners do not also merge their titles to their oil and gas rights in the area, and is complete when they do. The other meaning is not accompanied by any merger of titles, but the development and operation of the area is in accordance, as nearly as reasonably practicable, with such a program. This second conception may be nothing more than a cooperative development and operation plan, but in this paper it is regarded as more than that. If there cannot be unit operation without a merger of titles, it would seem that the state cannot require unit operation, for it cannot require a merging of titles; but if it may consist in requiring each and all of the leaseholders to develop and operate or to submit to a development and operation according to some such common plan as is referred to above without at the same time requiring a merger of titles, it would seem that unit operation may be required by the state. Whether the states have this power is the subject to be herein considered. If the state can so bind the several lessees, it also can so bind the several lessors. The writer does not know what would be an ideal plan for the development and operation of a pool; but it takes into account the fact that the accumulation of gas and oil is not uniform throughout the formation; that often free gas, highly compressed, occupies the upper portions of the reservoir, the oil with compressed gas in solution coming next in order; that at places oil is not overlain by free gas, and sometimes there are peaks where free gas is not immediately underlain by any oil; and the fact that these substances are held under a uniformly distributed pressure, generally referred to as "rock pressure." It also recognizes that the most efficient utilization of this naturally existing reservoir pressure in the recovery of the oil requires that there be no operation of wells completed into areas where gas only has accumulated, for this diminishes the

LAST year this Institute was good enough to accept some remarks by the writer regarding sound steel, entitled Plant for Hadfield Method of Producing Sound Steel Ingots, being a continuation of a research in which for some time the writer has been engaged, and full particulars of which were submitted in papers entitled A New Method of Revealing Segregation in Steel Ingots, and Method of Producing Sound Ingots, read before the Iron and Steel Institute in October, 1912. These papers gave rise to a very interesting discussion, both in England and America. This question is one of vital importance, as unless sound steel in the form of ingots is first obtained, sound steel in the finished forms of rail billets, rails, bars, sheets, and other forms cannot be expected. The working stresses demanded by modern conditions are so great, each year they probably approach nearer to the limit of safety, that without doubt those who produce steel will be compelled to pay the attention which this subject deserves. Moreover, the problem is not an insuperable one, as shown by the writer in the papers above referred to. In view of the information which has already been presented in these papers, it is not now necessary to go into details of the system advocated by the writer, except to repeat that the ingots and steel now referred to were produced by employing in the first place sound fluid steel, free from blowholes, this being poured into ordinary ingot molds, provided with the necessary feeding heads, the insulating slag medium, also charcoal and air blast or other suitable form of applying heat to the head portion of the ingot. Tile upper or head portion of the ingot is kept fluid by the intense heat generated by the air blast and charcoal, so that such fluid steel passes into the body of the ingot below the head, thus feeding and avoiding the shrinkage or piping which would otherwise occur. The result is the production of a sound steel ingot, free from blowholes, segregation and piping, and in which the waste portion, usually termed the discard, is but little over 7 or 8 per cent.

It is characteristic of most scientific investigators that they are not satisfied with the discovery of new facts, no matter how curious or unexpected, but that along with the factual discovery there is a constant effort to understand. It appears that one's interest in, and satisfaction with, the discovery of an array of new experimental facts is enormously increased if one has at the same time a theory or hypothesis guiding one's expectation of what sort of new experimental discovery may lie around the corner. Conversely, as a theoretical physicist one's satisfaction with his theory is greatly enhanced if along with the development of the theory can go the discovery of new experimental facts, confirming or perhaps modifying the theory as it grows. Of course, there have been long arid stretches in the history of physics in which new data of unquestioned ultimate importance have piled up, without much inspiration or illumination in the way of understanding. For 50 years spectroscopy had such an arid history, but how irksome this was felt to be is plainly shown by the almost audible relief that greeted the first success by Bohr in injecting understanding into the situation, and by the fresh rush of experimenters into this field when the prospect of understanding had once been offered. The investigations in the field of high pressure, which have occupied me for a long time,' until the last few years have been in very much the same sort of situation as spectroscopy before the advent of Bohr. A great many kinds of data were collected for a great many solid and liquid substances, and there could be no question of the importance of these data, because the uniform change of dimensions produced by hydrostatic pressure is perhaps the simplest conceivable type of alteration to which a body can be subjected. But except for a few isolated flashes, there was no theoretical illumination, so that it had to be to a large extent the enthusiasm of the collector that kept me going. THE earliest accounts we have of Japan represent the country as having great mineral wealth, especially of precious and useful metals. Marco Polo, the Venetian traveller, in the thirteenth century, writes of "Zipangu:” "They have gold in greatest abundance, its sources being inexhaustible. The king does not allow of its being exported. To this circumstance we are to attribute the extraordinary richness of the sovereign's palace. The entire roof is covered with a plating of gold. . . . The ceilings of the halls are of the same precious metal ; many of the apartments have tables of pure gold of considerable thickness, and the windows also have golden ornaments." Marco Polo also gives an account of an unsuccessful Tartar expedition against Japan, prompted by the supposed great wealth of the country. Columbus also, as well as many other explorers, were attracted and encouraged by these prevalent reports of the wealth of the islands of Zipangu. Kaempfer, writing in 1727, speaks of the great mineral wealth of Japan, and especially of the abundance of gold, which, he says, is found in many provinces. The Portuguese and Dutch, while they had trading-posts in Japan, furnished tangible evidence of the truth of the early reports. Between 1550 and 1639 the Portuguese merchants sent home from Japan nearly three hundred million dollars' worth of bullion, most of which was gold. As the relative value of equal weights of gold and silver was then six to one, while in Europe, at the same time, it was nearly twelve to one, the exchange of silver bullion for gold was by no means an unimportant part of their business. After the Portuguese, the Dutch continued the exportation of bullion, and the exchange of silver for gold, though with less profit, as the relative value of gold increased with the demand. Between 1649 and 1671 the Dutch traders sent home over two hundred million dollars in bullion, of which, however, nearly two-thirds was silver. In 1671 the Japanese government, alarmed at the rapid rate at which the precious metals were leaving the country, issued an edict forbidding the exportation of gold or silver, under heavy penalties, which had the immediate effect of stopping this trade. DIAMOND drilling has advanced and expanded during the past few years. Along with this increase there has been a marked trend to rely more and more upon drilling for the outlining of ore for reserve purposes. This is especially true underground, where men have not been available for opening up ore by crosscuts, drifts and raises. During the recent heavy call upon known ore reserves, more drilling has been done for exploration and it has become expedient to drill longer lateral holes from underground and deeper holes both from surface and from exploration headings in the mines. Furthermore, these deeper holes have to be drilled closely enough to warrant calculation of "probable" if not "proven" ore, from the results obtained therefrom. Interpretation of diamond-drill results has become more precise and reliable with the growing knowledge and understanding of the geologic structures that control the geometry of ore distribution, and this has broadened the field of usefulness of the drill. All of this has created a necessity and a demand for more accurate control of the hole as to direction, a more precise and reliable method of surveying for position, and a need for better and more complete core recovery, as well as larger cores, to provide an adequate sample. At depth the control becomes more difficult and, at the same time, more important. CONTROL A close study of drilling in various parts of the world for a period of more than 20 years has brought to light one definite rule, practically invariable; namely, that diamond-drill holes tend to deviate into a position normal to any structure existing in the rocks, such as bedding, schistosity, gneissosity, or even parting or jointing-even if the hole is started at almost any angle other than parallel with the structure. It also appears that the better developed the structure is, the more quickly will the hole get into a position perpendicular to it. It has often been said that there is a tendency for holes to "drift" in the direction of rotation. This is obviously untrue, for in a vertical hole the measure of deviation would depend upon the azimuth chosen as zero, and there is an infinite number of choices. It has been proved, however, that in homogeneous rocks there is a tendency for the hole to corkscrew, and that the direction of the spiral is the same as the direction of rotation. This may account for the belief that holes drift in that direction. Some tests have been made using right-hand and left-hand rods, and these show that no matter what the direction of rotation the hole will swing into a position perpendicular to the structure. Methods of Control The foregoing empirical rule may be used as an indirect method of control. If the prevailing structure is known, it may be advantageous to start the hole as nearly normal to it as possible, for the nearer the direction of the hole is to this ideal, the straighter it will remain. The micrographic analysis of silicon steels is possible if a dilute solution of nitric acid and methyl alcohol in nitrobenzol is used. The action of this reagent differs from that of sodium picrate in that there is no persistent deep-seated staining and the solution is used cold. THE technical difficulties hampering the metallographic analysis of silicon steels are chiefly the result of the extreme corrodibility of these alloys. The addition of silicon to iron in increasing quantities, up to about 6 per cent., rapidly increases the susceptibility of the alloy to chemical attack, not only in acid solution, but in water. This renders the preparation of metallographic sections very difficult, because of a non-selective attack upon the finely polished surface by the water used as a lubricant in polishing. This water attack masks the true structural details revealed by suitable etching reagents. It is thus necessary to use alcohol as a polishing lubricant in the last stages of preparation and to avoid all etching reagents having an aqueous base. A specific reagent for the identification of iron carbide in ferrous alloys, and the one hitherto used almost exclusively by metallurgists, is an alkaline aqueous solution of sodium picrate, which stains this constituent selectively. Its application to silicon steels has not proved successful, as its distinctive selective action is more or less completely hidden by the general attack of the aqueous solvent on the silico-ferrite, greatly accentuated by the fact that this reagent must be used at its boiling temperature (105° C.). Thus, a powerful metallographic aid to the study of the higher silicon alloys, such as transformer steels, is lost. A new reagent has been developed for the purpose of overcoming this difficulty. It is with some hesitation that the list of etching reagents, already overburdened, is increased, but the properties of this new reagent are advantageous in several ways and a definite field for it may be found in the metallography of ferrous alloys.

Many of the failures in vocational education are due to the fact that the educational methods were not designed to the capabilities, habits, and environments of those to be trained; rather they were based on the policy that education is education and lessons are lessons, whether for youngsters of fifteen or for men of forty. Vocational education among miners involves, first, a study of the men themselves, their habits, and the use of their leisure time; second, a study of the differences between the methods of teaching required for men and for children. Certain fundamental requirements of training methods for miners are reasonably universal and may be applied with success to any ordinary mining community. The rate of labor turnover is another consideration; it would be useless to design a four-year course for men who remain in one place only a few months. Length of Course The first consideration should be the length of the course. Few mining communities have a sufficiently stable population to make it possible successfully to carry on a course for over a year. While some men might complete a four-year course, the number is comparatively small compared with the number to whom a shorter course would be of service, and it is better to raise the standards of education even a little for a large number than to raise them to a high level for a few. It is perfectly possible to attain both objectives by arranging the courses in small units; all the units, when grouped together, should comprise a fairly complete course, yet any one unit should be complete in itself and of benefit to the workman. It should not take many of these units to make a miner or a timberman out of a mucker; but to do this the course should be short, because muckers seldom stay in one place long. By grouping a number of these units together it Would be possible for a miner to become a shift boss or a shift boss a foreman, and so on. As far as possible the units of the course should not be dependent on those preceding or following. The workman understands the completed job but he is not accustomed to carrying on several jobs at the same time and

IN any line of human activity logical handling requires an amount of attention to each phase that is in keeping with the importance of that phase. In the complex and rapidly changing field of modern ferrous metallurgy it is difficult to allot the proper degree of attention to the various subjects, and it is not surprising that one or more subjects of major importance should for a time be neglected. Bessemer steel is a good example of a neglected subject. It is largely taken for granted, inferior physical quality is assumed for it, and there is a lack of interest in its technical development and commercial application. Availability of supply is limited. In spite of this technical indifference, limited source and lack of commercial exploitation, bessemer steel constitutes a large volume of tonnage in daily use. There is a fairly prevalent idea even among technical people that bessemer steel survives mostly because of low cost and by reason of a dwindling residue of applications sufficiently common to permit of its use. The difference in cost between bessemer and open-hearth steel is governed largely by the relative cost of manufacture of pig iron and the market price of steel scrap. During the past four years there have been long periods of time during which the price of steel scrap was low enough so that open-hearth steel was considerably lower in manufacturing cost than bessemer. As to application, it may be pointed out that thousands of tons of this material in the form of bessemer screw steel are applied for moving parts in automotive and other equipment, Some forging work and considerable heat treating, particularly carburizing, is performed on this grade. From an economic standpoint the most effective contribution of bessemer steel lies in its free machining qualities. It is by far the freest

W. J. McGuire, et al, are to be commended for their undertaking of a mathematical solution of a very difficult problem. Unfortunately, however, a mathematical approach requires the application of several assumptions. These assumptions appear to be unrealistic and lead to answers which do not describe what actually happens when hydraulically fracturing oil and gas wells. Considering laboratory confirmation of breakdown phenomena, the authors appear to have tested their theories only on cement specimens and on samples of Austin limestone, much too small to provide any fracture system. This work resulted in the formation of vertical fractures. If the authors had tried similar experiments on thick walled cylinders made from almost any sandstone cores, they would have found that, using crude oil as the breakdown fluid, horizontal fractures would almost always occur, and at pressures much lower than any calculated. They would also find that by confining the fluid to within the bore (using oil base mud for example) on similar samples, the pressures required to burst the cylinders would be considerably higher and most of the fractures would be vertical. This breakdown pressure behavior has been duplicated in wells in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and in Wyoming. Considering field data the phenomena of different breakdown pressures for different breakdown techniques can be further illustrated. Most production and service personnel will agree that a breakdown can be more easily obtained if injection into a formation can be established prior to the occurrence of the breakdown. This is true whether the formation being treated is completed as open hole or as a perforated interval. This is clearly illustrated by a Lakota well in Wyoming, completed open hole at a total depth of 7,358 ft. An attempt to vertically fracture this well failed when a bottom hole pressure of 10,326 psi was insufficient to break down the formation. A non-penetrating type fluid (oil base mud) was in the well at the time the breakdown was tried." The oil base mud was then cleaned out of the well and replaced by a 30" API gravity crude oil. With this oil in the hole the formation breakdown was easily accomplished at a bottom hole pressure of 3,607 psi. This large difference in fracture pressures would be impossible according to the theories presented by McGuire, et al. The authors have used as an example the breakdown pressures experienced when acidizing Permian Basin wells. During acid treatments of limestone and dolomite the "breakdown" (drop-off in pressure) seldom occurs until some injection of acid has been accomplished. In these cases the breakdown is most likely to result from the chemical reaction of acid and rock in already existing vugs and fractures rather than from making a new fracture by hydraulic pressure. If this is true, then results in the Permian basin should not be used to validate the authors' calculations. *** AUTHORS' REPLY to ROSCOE C. CLARK and HENRY F. COFFER The purpose of our laboratory experiments in which thick-walled rock cylinders were hydraulically fractured was to determine the validity of the "thick pipe" formula for brittle materials, and not to predict nor demonstrate directly the orientation of field fractures. Our conclusions concerning field results resulted from calculations involving the "thick pipe" relationship as well as considerations of overburden stresses, rock strengths, and the geometry and dimensions of the field system. Clark suggests that had the models been more porous or contained weak bedding planes, horizontal fracturing would have occurred. This is undoubtedly true provided external stresses similar to those in the earth's crust are nor imposed. However, if we were going to design experiments to represent directly the field case we would impose the proper stresses on the models. It is generally recognized that the vertical compressive stress in the earth's crust arising from the weight of the overburden is approximately 1 psi/ft of depth. Then, as an example, even though a horizontal bedding plane has zero strength, the formation cannot be separated to form a horizontal fracture unless the hydraulic pressure exceeds the stress due to overburden. And in those cases in which the stress resisting vertical fracturing is significantly less than that resisting horizontal fracturing, vertical fractures should result, notwithstanding horizontal plane weaknesses. We agree that breakdown pressure will be less if the fracturing fluid penetrates the formation. In Appendix HI of our paper it is shown that leak-off reduces the pressure necessary to initiate either a horizontal or vertical fracture. It would be difficult to attempt to

THE purpose of this paper is to set forth the matters of principal interest in connection with work done in the past few years on the purification of the metals of the platinum group, including the study and modification of methods already in the literature and the development of new procedures. For the most part, the results will be given in summary form, reserving the publication of detailed data and directions for a forthcoming paper to be issued by the Bureau of Standards. In recent years increasing interest has been shown in the preparation of the pure platinum metals, both by those concerned with the manufacture of the metals and their alloys for scientific and industrial purposes and those who are engaged in the study of the chemical or physical properties of the elements. The purification of the metals usually has been regarded as a matter so involved and difficult as to require the attention of specialists. It is hoped that this paper will show that any of the metals can be prepared in any desired degree of purity by relatively simple straightforward chemical methods. For the most part, it is thought that the methods given are suitable for small-scale refineries as well as for the laboratory; also, that they will bring the time required for the purification of any of the metals within reasonable limits. The new procedure suggested for purifying platinum should prove to be much shorter than any methods described in the literature.

During the past 10 years, the safe and efficient lighting of the coal mines of this country has received an ever-increasing amount of attention. Several States have passed laws attempting to regulate the type of lamp to be used and the nature of the fuel to be burned, and the mining departments of coal-mining States have generally shown a keen and intelligent interest in this subject. The passage of the recent Employers' Liability Act in Pennsylvania has made it necessary for many coal-mining companies to take out liability insurance, and the companies underwriting such insurance have made it desirable for the insured to permit the use of none but illuminants of established worth. While these conditions have not obtained for a sufficient length of time to permit the statement that the illumination of coal mines by portable lamps has been standardized, still, considerable progress has been made and the direction of future practice in this branch of coal-mining technology is very evident. Under these conditions it seemed that a review of the methods now used in coalmine illumination, together with a brief consideration of the principles underlying these methods, might be of some interest. Miners' lamps may be divided into three classes: The open light, the electric cap lamp, and the flame safety lamp. It will be desirable to consider each of these classes separately, as each has properties peculiar to itself and one class is hardly comparable with another. In this country, without question, the open light is the most generally used of all miners' lamps. This fact is explained by the relative freedom of a large proportion of our mines from gaseous conditions, and by the admirable systems of ventilation installed in those that show a tendency toward such conditions. In the metal mines, the miner's candle has had and still has considerable vogue. Because of the small amount of ventilation usually supplied in metal mines, the freedom of the candle from any tendency to produce noxious gases or offensive odors, and the small amount of air it consumes, are valuable assets, while, because of the light color of the rocks in which workings are driven, the meager light is not a serious handicap.

IN a previous paper, "Electric Shovel Operation at Utah Copper Mine," which was read before the Western Division of the American Mining Congress, the problem of electrifying a fleet of steam shovels was described. This paper deals with the electrification of the haulage system which, when completed, will make the mining operation completely electric, with the exception of drilling operations which will continue to be performed by air. The general layout of the haulage system involves the use of heavy curves in addition to heavy grades of between 4 and 5 per cent. In a mining operation of this kind no trackage can be called permanent; this complicates the overhead construction somewhat and makes it necessary to design special forms of trolley construction, some of which will be described in detail below.

THE performance of coal-washing equipment, that is, the effectiveness with which coal and impurity are separated, is a subject of undisputed interest to all concerned with the preparation of coal. Through the years much has been written in both American and European literature on the performance of coal-washing equipment and its interpretation, but until recently no effort has been made to consolidate this wealth of information into a single, comprehensive treatment of the subject. A splendid effort in this direction was made at the First International Conference on Coal Preparation held in Paris in June 1950 in which representatives from virtually every coal-producing country participated. Although the scope of the conference covered the entire field of coal preparation, many of the sixty-odd papers and a great deal of the discussion dealt with the subject of evaluating washery performance. Prominence was given this subject by the Centre d'Etudes et Re-cherches, des Charbonnages de France, which sponsored the conference. This research organization, generally referred to as Cerchar, was formed in 1948 following the nationalization of the French coal industry. Since that date it has conducted an intensive study of coal preparation. Perhaps because of a fresh viewpoint, Cerchar realized immediately that complete information on the performance of French washeries and a thorough understanding of the mechanism of gravity separation were the fundamental prerequisites in a program to improve preparation practice. For this reason Cerchar concentrated on obtaining performance data and on a comprehensive study of methods of evaluating such information. Some idea of the magnitude of this work will be appreciated from the fact that 175 performance tests were made in 44 plants. The work performed by Cerchar emphasized a condition that is recognized by many of those concerned with coal preparation, namely that the lack of uniformity in presenting data on washery performance, the diversity of methods used in evaluating such information, and the frequent confusion of the terms related to performance have been prime factors militating against the progress from art to science. Thus, Cerchar feels that standardization of the methods employed for evaluating washery performance, not only in France but in the entire world, is essential to progress, and the prime objective of the Paris conference was to seek international standardization of the evaluation methods advocated by Cerchar. At the conclusion of the conference the question of standardization was referred to the International Standards Organization. A careful study of the dozen papers on the subject of evaluating washery performance presented at the conference reveals that none of the methods is new; most of them date back over a decade. Nevertheless, the intensive scrutiny of these methods brought about by the conference unquestionably has resulted in a valuable exchange of ideas and a clarification of thought that could scarcely be achieved in any other way. The object of the present report is to make available to the American coal industry the ideas developed at the conference which seem most important from an American viewpoint and to provide a critical analysis of some of the evaluation methods advocated by Cerchar. The various methods of evaluating washery performance are illustrated partly with data that have been published in American literature, and some new data have been obtained as the result of experimental work undertaken since the conference to provide information on certain controversial points. An English translation of the proceedings of the conference, including the discussion as well as the papers, will be available,' and previous to the conference Coal Age2 published a very brief description of some of the principal evaluation methods used by Cerchar. The objective of this study has been to develop a method of log interpretation in the Delaware sand whereby the effects of the shale contained within the sand can be recognized and accounted for in a quantitative solution for porosity and water saturation. Both theoretical and empirical considerations are discussed. A simplified interpretation chart is presented which provides a means of amending the conventional porosity resolution of the Sonic log to compensate for the presence of shale. The amount of shale within the sand and its degree of lamination may be inferred from a calibrated gamma ray log. The resulting porosity value may then be used in conjunction with a knowledge of the formation resistivity to determine water saturation. Of added interest, particularly in the Delaware sand, is an approximation of permeability which may be derived empirically from the simplified chart. The discussion is illustrated by field examples. INTRODUCTION The performance of the Sonic log in defining the porosity fraction in clean, consolidated formations is well known, particularly in sandstones that are well compacted and free of shale. An approach to Sonic log porosity determination in shaly sands has been recently developed.' This method involves correcting the Sonic log readings by means of an a factor, where a is the ratio of the pseudo-static SP to, the static SP, and is a function of the amount of shale present. This method is dependent upon a contrast between the salinities of the drilling fluid and the connate water in the formation, inasmuch as this contrast produces the SP effect. In wells drilled with salt mud, the contrast, and with it the means of obtaining the a correction, disappear. In the Delaware basin, the large majority of rotary wells drilled to the uppermost sands of the Bell Canyon group employ salt mud as the drilling fluid. These sands have been the objective of most of the drilling exploration in the basin to date. A comparison of porosity values in these sands, as determined by core analysis, to Sonic log readings has indicated that a correction for the shaliness of the sand is needed. In the absence of an SP curve to determine the correction factor, the porosity resolution of the Sonic log in these sands has been questionable.

A study of bit-tooth penetration, or crater forniation. under simulated borehole condirions has been made. Pressure conditions existing when drilling with air, water and mud have been sirnulated for depths of 0 to 20.000 ft. These crater tests showed that a threshold bit-tooth force must he exceeded before a crater is .formed. This thresh old force increased with both tooth dullness and diflerenrial pressure between the borehole and formalion fluids. At low differential pressures, the craters formed in a brittle manner and the cuttings were easily removed. At high differenlial pressures, the cunings were firmly held in the craters and the craters were formed by a pseudoplas-tic mechanism. With constant farce of 6,500 16 applied to the bit reeth, an increase in differential pressure (sitnulated mud drilling) from 0 to 5,000 psi reduced the crater volumes by 90 per cent. A comparable increase in hydrostatic fluid pressure (simulated water drilling) produced only a 50 per cent decrease in volutne while changes in overburden pressure (simulated air drilling) had no detectable effect on crater volume. Crater tests in unconsolidated sand subjected to differential pressure showed that high friction was present in the sand at high pressures. Similar friction belween the cuttings in craters produces the transition from brittle to pseudo plastic craters. INTRODUCTION The number of wells drilled below 15,000 ft increased from 5 in 1950 to 308 in 1964. Associated with these deep wells are low drilling rates and high costs. High bottom-hole pressures produce low drilling rates by increasing rock strength and by creating bottom-hole cleaning problems. This paper describes an experimental investigation of crater formation under bottom-hole conditions simulating air, water and mud drilling. Although numerous investigators have studied bit-tooth penetration (cratering) at atmospheric pressure conditions, only limited work has been done on cratering in rocks subjected to pressures existing in oil wells. Payne and Chippendale2 have studied cratering in rocks subjected to hydrostatic pressure using spherical penetrators. Garner et aLJ conducted crater tests in dry limestone by varying overburden pressure and borehole fluid pressure independently and using atmospheric formation-fluid pressure Gnirk and Cheathem4,5 have studied crater formation in several dry rocks subjected to equal overburden and borehole pressure and atmospheric formotion pressure. Podio and Gray studied the effect of pore fluid viscosity on crater formation using atmospheric borehole and formation-fluid pressurc and varying overburden pressure. Although these studies have provided useful information on crater formation under pressure, they were limited in that the three bottom-hole pressures could not be varied independently and, therefore, that many drilling conditions could not be simulated. The prersure chamber used in this study allowed visual observation of the cratering mechanism and independent control of the borehole, formation and confining pressures. By using different fluids in the chamber, pressure conditions existing in air, water and mud drilling to depths of 20,000 ft were simulated. The mechanisms involved in cratering at these different pressure conditions were studied for teeth of varying dullness and at different loadins rates. High-speed movies (8,000 frames/sec) and closed-circuit television were used to visually study the crater mechanism under pressure. EXPERIMENTAT PROCEDURE PRESSURE CHAMBER The Pressure chamber in Fig. I was used to simulate bottom-hole pressure conditions. This chamber has been pressure-tested to 22,500 psi and is normally operated at pressures up to 15,000 psi. The chamber contains four lucite windows' used for illuminating and observing the crater mechanism under pressurc. A closed-circuit television and a Fastax camera (8,000 frames/sec) have been used in these studies. Cylindrical rock specimens (8-in. diameter X 6-in. long) were subjected to three independently controlled pressures simulating overburden, borehole fluid and formation-fluid pressures. Overburden pressure, which corresponds to the stress induced by the overlying earth mass, was applied by exerting fluid pressure against a rubber sleeve surrounding the rock. Borehole pressure, which is the pressure exerted by the column of mud in the wellbore, was simulated by applying pressure to the fluid overlying the rock in the chamber. Formation pressure was simulated by applying pressure to the water saturating the rock. The borehole and formation pressures were equal except when mud was used in the chamber, in which case the differential pressure between these fluids acted across the mud filter cake.
