The relationship between the composition of the slag and that of the underlying metal during the refining of a heat of liquid steel may best be studied in the light of the two broad physicochemical concepts of equilibrium and reaction rate. Actual steel-making processes, typified by basic open-hearth practice, involve such complexities of operating variables that it is impossible to distinguish with any degree of certainty between the general limiting conditions imposed by chemical equilibrium and the effects associated with rates of diffusion or of chemical reaction. Further advances in the physical chemistry of steelmaking will depend upon our ability to distinguish clearly between these two kinds of effects, and the experimental work that must be done falls naturally into two classifications. The first is the study of chemical equilibrium that cannot be carried out with assurance under operating conditions but must be done in the laboratory. The second is the -subject of rates of reaction and diffusion and the mechanism of the process as a whole, which can best be studied under operating conditions. The latter is not entirely independent of the former, since its interpretation often requires a knowledge of the equilibrium state. It is the purpose of this and of several papers that will follow to present the results of labora- tory investigations of equilibria involving liquid steel and slag. Open-hearth slag is a complex mixture containing at least eight major components and perhaps twice as many whose influence may be classified as probably minor. It is not surprising that progress toward a complete understanding of such a material at high temperatures has been slow. Attempts to apply the established principles of physical chemistry to the behavior of the individual components of this mixture have been beset by an almost complete lack of data on its chemical properties in the liquid state. This has necessitated the adoption of various methods of approximation based upon such assumptions as, for example, that for a given component the ratio of its mol fraction in the slag to that in the metal is a constant, or that the molecular composition of the liquid slag is the same as its crystalline constitution after solidification. From the thermo-dynamic viewpoint, such assumptions are merely useful dodges, which enable one to hazard a guess as to the magnitude of the more fundamental quantities, the chemical potentials and activities of the components of slag. The problem of determining the activity of each substance in an eight-component svstem seems too complex to be undertaken without the aid of generalizations derived from experimental data on similar systems containing a smaller number of components. It is well known that the hardness of metallic single crystals, like that of polycrystalline metals, increases during deformation (hardening by cold-work). It is also known that, as a consequence of deformation. the metallic material acquires an evident thermodynamic instability, revealed, for example, by the fact that the increased hardness gradually decreases with time, especially at elevated temperatures (softening by annealing). The temperature at which the stabilizing process begins is different for various metals, and for any metal it depends on the amount of deformation. Such stabilization of deformed metals may proceed in two different ways: through recovery, and through recrystallization. The former process allows the unstable deformed metal body to approach stability gradually and without visible change in the grain structure; the latter process, like an allotropic transformation, yields directly the undeformed stable "phase" in the form of new undeformed crystals, which, starting out of a certain number of nuclei, grow into and " consume " the deformed hard material. The extent of stability attainable through recovery is limited, especially if the deformation of the metal crystal or crystals involves not only the gliding along slip planes, but also the bending of the slip lamellae, or at any rate the bending of comparatively large parts of the crystal lattice. In such cases, for instance in bent single crystals or polycrystalline metals subjected to any deformation, recovery will not as a rule be able to restore the "istraight" undeformed lattice, and stability can be attained only by recrystallization; that is, by the consumption of the bent crystal lattice parts by new, undeformed crystals—a much more drastic process. It is evident that the part of the surplus free energy stored in deformed crystals, which is present in the form of the elastic energy of the bent lamellae, is in these instances not considerably involved

Densities of melts of the iron oxide-silica system in contact with solid iron have been measured by the maximum hubble pressure method in the composition range O to 37 wt pct SiOz and the temperature range 1255 to 1410C. The constitution of the melts is discussed and it is postulated that the structure changes from a dislribution of iron ions in an oxygen ion network at pure "FeO" to a distribution. of iron ions in a network of silicate tetrahedra at the orthosilicate composition. ISD The system iron oxide-silica is an important one metallurgically because it forms the basis of several complex slag systems in use for industrial smelting and refining processes. In recent years considerable work has been done on liquids of this system but there are still many points of difference among workers using different experimental techniques and theoretical approaches. Phase equilibria/"3 activity,4-6 electrical conductivity,' current efficiency,' transference number,8 viscosity,9 surface tension,'' and density" measurements have all contributed to an understanding of the problem. Measurement of density is one procedure which is directly indicative of liquid structure since any deviation from ideality must be a result of structural interactions. Liquids of the iron oxide-silica system are of special interest because this is one of the few metal oxide-silica systems on which measurements can be carried out conveniently over the entire composition range from pure oxide to silica saturation. This includes the range of high basicity which has received relatively little attention in other systems. Although one investigation of density in this system has previously been undertaken," the results seem of sufficient importance to warrant the independent redeter-mination reported here.

Asterism appearing in X-ray Laue diagrams is an extremely sensitive index of changes in the internal structures of individual grains of polycrystalline metals. It indicates the existence of various forms of subboundary structure or subdivision within the grain. The present viewpoint is that the grain is made up of lattice blocks having substantially the same size and shape.l-4 When these blocks all assume exactly the same orientation, the crystal is perfect and asterism is absent. Cleaves and Thompson5 observed that the hardness of iron is virtually constant over a range of grain sizes. It is quite possible that the subboundary structure caused this, and that the latter is just as important as grain size itself. While the experiments reported here are not conclusive, they do support this viewpoint. Metals can, under certain conditions, be prepared entirely free from asterism, but this preparation does not necessarily require long heating or slow cooling, as will be shown here. In this paper a distinction is made between mosaic and distorted grain structures but the difference is only a matter of degree. In a previous paper9 it was shown that the grains can become distorted even during heat-treatment. The block structure exists inherently, even in a perfect crystal; the size and shape of these crystallites, or lattice blocks, varies, depending upon a number of factors. Goetz, for example: has shown that a metal before crystallizing from the molten state must go through a paracrystalline phase with oriented groups of atoms about 10-l4 to 10-l5 c.c., or 10-15 cm. in size. These crystallites, or blocks, appear to survive the most drastic cold-working, for it has been shown, and more elaborately by Wood's recent work," that cold-working cannot reduce the size of these crystallites smaller than of the order 10-5 cm. The interesting correlation brought out by the experiments of Goetz and Wood is that the block size after severe cold-working is of the same order of magnitude as the groups that formed in the metal just before crystallizing from the molten state. The work of Ewald and Rennenger17 and the now classical experiments of Darwin and James12,13 all strongly suggest the existence of a periodic structure of crystal. lites smaller than the grain itself. Related to this effect is the appearance of veinlike markings in the microstructures. Ammer-man and Kornfeld,16 in their experiments, did not observe any evidence of veining in specimens of alpha iron annealed below A3 and believed that veining was not due to impurities in the iron, as Northcott16 suggested; veining was observed by them only in specimens annealed above A3. Hanemann,16 Schrader and Tangerding found that annealing in hydrogen did not diminish veining and so it could not be caused by oxides. They concluded that veining was due to a slight difference in the orientation of ferrite lattice blocks. This viewpoint is well supported by the evidence presented here.

The great activity with which the oil resources of the northern Cantons of the State of Veracruz have been developed has largely resulted from the great success obtained by the important explorations carried out since 1902 in the Ebano district in the North, and several years later near Tuxpam, in the South. It must not be thought that these successes were quickly obtained, since the preliminary studies by good experts, the acquisition of what were thought to be the most promising coast lands, the extensive clearing thereof, and finally the number of unsuccessful drillings at great depth, signified an original outlay of some tens of millions of dollars before finding commercial oil. The discovery of oil in industrial quantities at Cerro de la Pez, Ebano district, and the famous Dos Bocas gusher some years later, which was burned, once and for all made famous the Veracruz coast, where today is concentrated the Mexican output of mineral oil. In 1917, this production was nearly 61,000,000 bbl. It is well known that this output represents only a fraction of what the wells in actual production can furnish, because with adequate means of transportation and storage, the present extraction could be somewhat over 300,000,000 bbl. a year. These enormous potential oil resources of the Veracruz coast proceed from a relatively small number of wells, scattered over a few oil fields, separated from each other by large unexplored areas, wherein may be found other favorable fields which, in time, will undoubtedly become just as great centers of oil production. Experts who know our Gulf Coast believe that lands with commercial oil resources lie not only between the Pgnuco and Tuxpan Rivers, but that indications are that the oil zone of Mexico, with more or less interruption, takes in the coast zone from Northern Tamaulipas to the foot of the Sierra Madre of Chiapas, and the banks of the Usumacinta River. This generalization is not merely the outcome of optimism, but is the result of the persistency with which one finds, throughout this Gulf Coast, the most usual characteristics upon which we depend for recognizing oil-bearing lands.

The underground haulage system in the lead-silver mine of the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Co., situated at Kellogg, Idaho, is the most extensive in the Cæur d'Alene district, comprising about 35,000 ft. of tunnels, drifts, and cross-cuts where locomotive haulage is in use. The main working adit, known as the Kellogg tunnel, or No. 9 level, is approximately 10,000 ft. in length from the portal to the main working shaft and extends beyond that about 4,500 ft. in each of two directions. On this level all the ore from the Bunker Hill & Sullivan, the Sierra Nevada Consolidated, and the Caledonia Mining Co.—an average of 44,600 tons per month—is hauled to the mills, located a short distance from the portal. Electric haulage by the trolley-type locomotive is used on this level throughout. Below this level, at intervals of 200 ft. vertically, are five other working levels (Nos. 10, 11,12,13, and 14); and the total haulage distance on these, where electric locomotives are used, is approximately 16,000 ft. No. 13 level has but recently been opened up and is not working to capacity; while the main cross-cut on No. 14 has just been started, and has no need of power haulage. Of the four levels equipped with electric haulage, Nos. 11, 12, and 13 have storage-battery locomotives, and No. 10 still retains the trolley type by reason of the small and decreasing tonnage produced. Electrification - Electric power is supplied to the mine by two systems. The first, the 500-volt direct-current trolley, was installed in 1897 when the Kellogg tunnel was started, and was extended as the tunnel advanced, being used for the first trainload of ore on Nov. 17, 1902, since which time it has been in continuous service. The current for the line is transmitted on a No. 00 copper wire as far as the shaft, and on No. 0 wire throughout the remaining length of the Kellogg tunnel; and until the installation of the storage-battery locomotives it was used in practically all the cross-cuts and drifts on each level below No. 9.

The history of the production of sulfur from salt domes in Louisiana and Texas originated with the operations of the Union Sulphur CO. at Sulphur, La., followed by the Freeport Sulphur Co. at Bryanmound, Tex. Including the present development of Grande Ecaille by the Free-port Sulphur Co., which constitutes the tenth dome to be equipped for the production of sulfur in the Gulf Coast, less than 10 per cent of all the known domes have proved to contain sulfur in commercial quantities. The Grande Ecaille salt dome is in the tidal marsh of the Mississippi River delta in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana. It is 10 miles southwest of the right descending bank of the river approximately 45 miles below the city of New Orleans and is within 4 miles of the shore line of the Gulf of Mexico. Terrain Characteristic of the delta region, the terrain consists of a low, flat, uninhabited area of marsh land intersected by many shallow lakes and bayous. With the exception of salt grasses, the region is devoid of vegetation and presents, in all directions, an unobstructed path to the vagaries of the winds. The general character of this area can be best visualized from the mechanism of its formation.' Offshore bars formed enclosing long narrow lagoons between the bar and the inner shore line, the lagoons communicating with the sea by means of tidal inlets. The water in the lagoons, being comparatively quiet, favored the deposition of fine debris composed of sand carried into the lagoons by action of the waves, tides and river-borne sediments from the land surface. As this material accumulated the bottoms of the lagoons were built up and eventually salt grasses obtained a foothold. The successions of growth and decay of these grasses formed a brown fibrous mat varying in depth from a few inches to several feet. This mat of vegetation virtually floats on an ooze that is several feet thick and is composed of alluvial sediments and very fine sand, and the whole is underlain by an unctuous clay. The decayed vegetation from the upper layer when dried has a peaty appearance.

THE Simon-Carves washer, originally known as the Baum jig washer, was first built in Europe about 1892. It was probably the first washer to use intermittent pressure of air on water in one part of the wash box to obtain water pulsations in another part. This type of washer was also the first to successfully clean various sizes in the same unit. Previous practice was to size closely before washing. Today there are several large firms abroad, and a few in the United States, that are constructing the Baum type washer. The design of all is practically the same, their differences being only in details. In 1928, the Hanna Coal Co. first gave consideration to the question of coal cleaning. It was believed at that time that by efficient removal of so-called noncombustibles appearing in the Pittsburgh No. 8 seam, certain markets that had been lost due to poor preparation might be recovered. Mechanical cleaning and mechanical loading were under consideration. This type of cleaning was considered the most practical means of removing impurities in the sizes below 4 in. It was decided to adopt mechanical cleaning and develop a system of mechanical loading that would be successful on No. 8 coal.

FLOTATION is now commonly practiced in alkaline ore pulps, yet little is known regarding the action of the alkaline solutions on the ore particles beyond the fact that films of oxidized material form. We wish to chronicle our discovery of the presence of soluble reducing agents in alkaline ore pulps of the United Verde, and present some data on lime consumption. During the grinding and flotation of a pyritic ore containing small amounts of ferrous sulfate and other soluble salts, an excess of lime was added to precipitate the salts, and filtered samples of the solution were titrated with standard permanganate solution. Even in pulps of high causticity an appreciable permanganate titration was always obtained, in spite of the fact that the solutions were shown to contain little iron. Investigation of the cause brought about the discovery of several previously unsuspected compounds in flotation pulps made from pyritic ore. Not only the reducing agents present had to be identified, but also the amount of dissolved oxygen, and a survey was finally made of the free oxygen content and reducing agents of the mill pulp in the concentrating mill at Clarkdale. A great many compounds might form, caused by oxidation of pyrite or other metal sulfides or by reaction between a lime solution and pyrite. The most probable compounds considered were calcium sulfides; polysul-fides, thiosulfates, and polythionates. Later it was discovered in the literature that in alkaline pulp polythionates do not exist and if introduced. are decomposed into sulfites and thiosulfates.1 Any precipitated sulfur is changed by alkali into thiosulfate and polysulfide. Sulfites and sulfides react to form thiosulfate, so that in the end it is possible to have in an alkaline solution only thiosulfate and an excess either of sulfide or sulfite. Inasmuch as the higher grade potash deposits are rapidly being depleted, it is important that economic beneficiation techniques be developed for recovering potassium compounds from lower grade sylvite ores and deposits containing clay materials. The Federal Bureau of Mines has conducted research to develop processes for heavy liquid concentration of potash ores, This method of concentration is discussed, and results of tests made on potash ores from New Mexico are presented. The tests demonstrated the technical feasibility of producing near commercial-grade potash concentrates, with a high recovery of the contained sylvite. The concentration of minerals based on their differences in specific gravity dates back to the very beginning of mineral dressing, and the use of heavy liquids in the laboratory to achieve optimum mineral separations has been utilized for many years. With the advent of froth flotation and its success, the incentive to develop new processes has remained relatively dormant. However, flotation refinements in the nonmetallic ores have not progressed as rapidly as in metallic (sulfide) ores because of the complexity of the deposits and the chemical similarities of the minerals.

Introduction To the miner, as well as to the geologist, the eastern part of Cuba is a most interesting region. Here we find, in contrast to the moderate relief predominating elsewhere in the island, an imposing mountain range, the Sierra Maestra, extending east and west parallel to the coast, its precipitous front facing the blue Caribbean Sea.. In a geological sense this range is largely an unknown land, the only well-explored region being that in the vicinity of Santiago. The range also contains the most important mineral deposits of the island. They comprise, first, a series of iron deposits yielding a partly hematitized magnetite with low content of phosphorus; second, a remarkable copper-bearing vein at El Cobre; and third, various manganese deposits. Probably more deposits will be found, for the larger and western part of the range is as yet little explored and its slopes are covered by a thick tropical jungle. The following notes are based on a short visit by the senior author in January and February of 1914 to the mines at Daiquiri, El Cobre, and Mayari. I.—The Deep-Level Shafts. The gold-deposits of the Witwatersrand (Anglice, " White Waters' Range ") are, as is well-known, more or less parallel and tilted sedimentary beds of quartz-pebble conglomerate impregnated with gold. These beds, however, are locally called "reefs"—a term equivalent in signification to the American "ledge"—and, like the latter, usually applied to lodes, though covering in practical usage all deposits of tabular form. The first developments of the reefs of the Rand were naturally made along their outcrops. Since the mining law of the Transvaal does not confer upon locators the "extralateral right," the property of each locator upon the outcrop or apex ends with the vertical planes drawn through the boundaries of the claim. Consequently those portions of the reefs which lie "on the dip," beyond these boundaries, are separately acquired by locating new surface-claims, and are usually to be mined only by means of vertical shafts, reaching the reefs at considerable depths. The term "deep-level properties " is given to such claims on the dip, and the " deep-level shafts " are the vertical shafts sunk in the hanging-wall of the Witwatersrand reefs, in contradistinction to the incline-shafts almost universally employed on the outcrop-properties. Number and Distribution.—The accompanying diagram, Plate I., shows the number and depth of these deeplevel shafts, completed or under process of sinking, up to January 1, 1900. THE value to the engineering profession of a liaison between the engineering societies of Russia and America, through Engineering Council, was the subject of a meeting in the Engineering Societies Building attended by over 500 persons. In introducing the subject, Mr. N. A. Stephanoff, President of the Russian Society of America, said: In Russia, engineers were divided into two classes: those who had graduated from the high technical schools and the practical engineers who had graduated from special technical schools. These technical schools were divided into three groups: The first corresponded to the German polytechnical schools with many departments, mechanical, chemical, metallurgical, mining, etc. The second group corresponded to the French special schools of the "Écoles des Ponts et Chaussées." "École des Mines." The third group was formed by the Military and Naval Academies of Engineers. In 1910, Russia's high technical schools had about 45,000 students, whose training covered a period of not less than five years, and who enjoyed all opportunities afforded by laboratories in no way inferior to those of Germany.

IN the numbers of the Engineering and Mining Journal of June 27th and July 11th, 1874, there appeared some very complete statistics of the working of some anthracite blast-furnaces belonging to a large establishment in this country, followed by calculations of the heat requirements of the furnaces, similar to those which have been made for European furnaces by Mr. I. Lowthian Bell, Prof. Gruner, Prof. Akerman and others. To the author of these valuable papers, Mr. John A. Church, of New York, the thanks of American iron metallurgists are due for this attempt (the first, to my knowledge at least), to attack systematically and scientifically the problem of economy of fuel in our anthracite blast-furnaces, by applying the formulas obtained from European practice and from the experiments of European metallurgists, to the determination of the amounts and the modes of distribution of the heat production and absorption in our furnaces. In order to facilitate a comparison of the results thus obtained for the anthracite furnaces in question with those obtained for the best types of European coke furnaces, I have reduced to the same standard of heat units (the product of the ton and the degree Centigrade), and placed side by side, the calculations of the heat requirements of one of the furnaces of the Clarence works, as given by Mr. Bell, of a furnace at Pouzin, on the banks of the Rhone, given by Prof. Gruner, and of the anthracite furnaces for 1869-73, as given -by Mr. Church. Table I shows the different conditions of working of the three furnaces, of which Table II gives the respective heat requirements. I have made this latter table in such a manner as to give for each furnace its heat requirements, both according to the views of Mr. Bell and those of Prof. Gruner. Mr. Bell assumes that all the carbonic acid produced by the decomposition of the carbonate of lime of the charge, is reduced to carbonic oxide by contact with solid carbon ; also, that the carbon of the pig iron is a portion of that deposited in the ore in the upper part of the furnace, by the dissociation of carbonic oxide. Prof. Gruner, on the other hand, assumes that all the carbonic acid of the carbonates of the charge escapes unreduced, and that the carbon deposited in the upper part of the furnace, by the dissocia¬tion of carbonic oxide, is again converted into carbonic oxide or

In the numbers of the Engineering and Mining Journal of June 27th and July llth, 1874, there appeared some very complete statistics of the working of some anthracite blast-furnaces belonging to a large establishment in this country, followed by calculations of the heat requirements of the furnaces, similar to those which have been made for European furnaces by Mr. I. Changes in stored energy, resistivity, density, X-ray line broadening, and dislocation arrangements (from transmission electron microscopy) have been mensured on copper specimens shock-loaded at 75 to 435 kbars. The stored energy in shock-loaded copper and changes in density and resistivity are larger than those after conventional deformation. A high density of twins makes an appreciable contribution to all the measured quantities. Dislocation densities rise to values of 1011 lines per sq cm at the highest pressure. The resistivity, density, and X-ray In a study of the effects of shock loading on copper, changes in stored energy, resistivity, density, hardness, lattice parameter, line broadening, and dislocation structure have been examined after subsequent annealing of specimens shocked to various pressures. This paper presents certain aspects of the data, taken by two groups, one at the Illinois Institute of Technology, and the other at Northwestern University, and compares the changes in these properties, and what they indicate about the effects of shock deformation. measurements yield dislocation densities in substantial agreement at all pressures, after correcting for the effects due to the twins. At the higher pressures, electron microscopy yields dislocation densities that are lower by a factor of about 5 to 10. Dislocation densities from stored -energy measurements are high; this finding can be rationalized by the consideration that the deformation twin boundaries present are largely incoherent. There is no evidence for homogeneous dislocation nucleation during shock loading. Shock loading any metal or alloy, such as copper, causes a large increase in yield strength, with dimensional changes of the order of only a few percent."' Other properties have not been extensively studied, but this result clearly indicates the importance of examining the substructure. Previous studies of the substructure of conventionally deformed specimens have been made using electron microscopy,3-6 X-ray diffraction,7,8 and etch pitting.9,10 The dislocation density can reach values of about 10" per sq cm; and the dislocations are arranged in cells approximately 0.15 in size. The substructure varies widely, however, from point to point in the specimen. The substructure of explosively loaded copper consists of cells of about the same dimensions6,11 but their size is more uniform.6 Profuse twinning occurs12,13 and the twins are often too small to be detected optically.6,13 The boundaries outlining these twins appear to be incoherent.14 There is now ample evidence 13-15 that twinning is a strengthening mechanism in fcc metals but this is only part of the strengthening effect in shock-loaded copper.* From the twinning systems which operate in shock-loaded single crystals,13 and from changes in texture on shock loading,17 it has been shown that both the

The organization of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, 75 years ago, parallels the beginning of present-day steel-producing methods in the United States. This early association with the industry is emphasized by the fact that the first open-hearth furnace constructed and operated in this country was then only three years old, and the first commercial bessemer converter was just seven years old. Total steel production in the year 1871, as recorded by the American Iron and Steel Institute, was 84,000 net tons, of which 2,000 tons was produced by the open-hearth process, 45,000 tons by the bessemer, and 37,000 tons by the crucible, puddled iron, and other processes. The bessemer process had thus become the major source of steel production. Its capacity expanded progressively during the following decade, and by 1880 was the source of approximately 86 pct of total steel production. Most of this tonnage was made in eastern Pennsylvania and used in rail manufacture. At about this time, however, important changes began to occur which gave impetus to the production of steel on a much larger scale. The development of Lake Superior ores from 1870 to 1890 and the exploitation of the Mesabi Range in 1892 provided the industry with great quantities of high-grade ores. The abundance of coking coals and limestone in the region adjoining western Pennsylvania and the development of cheap water transportation on the Great Lakes tended to shift the center of iron and steel manufacture to an area west of the Allegheny Mountains. THE Sydney coal field, the largest and most valuable in Nova Scotia, is on the northeastern coast of the Island of Cape Breton, extending from Mira Bay on the south to Cape Dauphin on the north, a distance of 30 miles, and has a general dip northeast under the sea. The field embraces the mining villages of Morien, Birch- grove and Reserve and the towns of Dominion, Glace Bay, Waterford and Sydney Mines. The city of Sydney is about midway between the northern and southern extremities of the field and on the western fringe of the productive coal measures. Sydney harbor crosses the coal field, cutting off direct rail connection between Sydney Mines and the greater part of the field to the southeast.
