A part of the field-seasons of 1900, 1901 and 1902 mas devoted by the writer to a study of the manganese ore-deposits of Georgia. A report embodying the results of this study is rapidly nearing completion, and when finished it will be published as a bulletin of the Geological Survey of Georgia. I believe, however, the importance of these deposits warrants a separate and earlier publication than that made possible by the Survey, in which the more important results of the study are briefly set forth. It is principally for this reason that the present paper has been prepared. Previous Work.—Some of the more important deposits of manganese occurring in the Paleozoic area of Georgia were studied to some extent previous to 1890 by Dr. Penrose;t and again in the early nineties by former State Geologist, J. W. Spencer. In a recent paper published in the Transactions, on the " Geological Relations of the Iron-Ores in the Cartersville District, Georgia," Dr. Hayes briefly mentions the manganeseores of the same district. The softening temperature of coal ash, as determined in the laboratory, has been used for years as an indication of the tendency of coal to form clinker and slag. It has not, however, provided an index of unfailing and complete reliability for forecasting the relative performance of different coals, even in the same plant and under the same conditions of operation. A large amount of investigation has been done in attempts to account for this, but practically all of this has been in the direction of studying the chemical constitution of coal ash. Much has been learned, but without much progress toward a better practical application of knowledge to the selection of coal. There has always seemed to be an important factor that eluded discovery. It has long been recognized that the ash-softening temperature as determined in the laboratory had one weakness, in that it represented the temperature at which a thorough mixture of the whole ash of the coal would melt, the mixing having taken place before the heal was applied. This does not, of course, simulate what takes place in practice. With certain exceptions, which will be noted later, almost all of the investigations that have been made, especially the chemical studies of coal ash, have likewise dealt with a mixture of the whole ash in the coal. The present investigation differs from these fundamentally in its approach to the problem. It started from the observation that some clinkering and slagging obviously takes place in a boiler furnace at temperatures below the laboratory-determined ash-softening temperature of the coal. Knowing that coal as it is shipped to market is a heterogeneous mixture of diverse mineral substances, each of which may act independently of the others in the initial stages of clinker and slag formation, it seemed logical to investigate separately the softening temperature of the ash in physically separable portions of the coal, and to determine the relative quantities of ash contributed by each portion. THE simplicity of the propeller or disk fan, its small size and low cost, has, in recent years, led to an extended use of ventilators of this type at mines where only slight pressure is required. On this account the author of this paper has prepared for the new edition of Peele's Mining Engineers' Handbook a more accurate method of computing the required size, power, and so forth, than was possible for the first edition. The main object of this paper is to set forth the data collected in the course of that work, and to discuss the subject with more latitude than would have been advisable in a handbook, even if space had been available. Theory of Fans A great deal has been written about the theory of fans from Rankine's time down to the present. Nevertheless a rigid mathematical analysis of the propeller fan seems to be wanting. A general idea of the mechanics and difficulties in the way of analysis may be gathered from the following: The useful pressure and velocity effects of the oblique impact of the vanes on the axial current would evidently be nil if the blades were perpendicular to the plane of rotation, or if they were of such helicoidal form that the screw pitch multiplied by the speed represented an axial velocity agreeing with the actual velocity. Somewhere between these zero angles there is a pitch which, under given conditions of flow, would produce the maximum useful effect. A true helicoidal blade can be so arranged that it would offer no retarding effect on the air current at any part of the wheel, provided the axial velocity be assumed the same in all parts of the cross-section of the air course, but if plane surfaces are used, it is possible, under some conditions, that the air would be retarded at the middle parts of the wheel while it was accelerated at the circumference. Whatever be the form of vane, it seems evident that the tips are far more effective than the center of the wheel, because of their higher velocity. For this reason some investigators believe that a backward current forms through the middle of the wheel and that part of the air is circulated in a radial axial loop. Ignoring the possible existence of this eddy and the friction of the walls of the air course; and assuming the axial velocity of the air through all parts of the wheel, some rational analysis of the impact might be made according to the theory of deflecting surfaces, were it not

The operating experience to date with long distance iron concentrate slurry pipelines at Savage River, in Tasmania, Australia, and Peña Colorada, in Colima, Mex., is discussed. The three pipeline systems currently under construction in Central and South America are described with particular emphasis on the SAMARCO system in Brazil, which will be the world's largest upon completion. General considerations for the technical, environmental, and economic feasibility of the slurry pipeline approach to solids transport are discussed with reference to alternative modes of bulk transport. A case study for the Lake Superior Dist. is presented.

It scarcely is possible to read a new issue of any of the principal mining trade journals without noting some mention of a major new overseas mining venture with which one or more domestic companies are involved. These projects follow a fairly consistent pattern; most are large open pit mines with relatively low grade orebodies but huge reserves; the total price tag is in nine significant figures and half or more of the total cost is for infrastructure. West' notes that nearly $7 billion is being invested annually for new mining projects and the expansion of existing mining ventures in the free world. He anticipates that by 1975 such investments will reach the $10-11 billion annual figure and that in the period 1972-76 total capital requirements can be expected to aggregate around $45 billion. West estimates that 75% of the total capital will come from internally generated funds. Conceivably, a substantially higher percentage could be attributable to external financing, especially if the trend of recent mineral development in Canada and Australia is any criterion, and including local sales of equity as a part of the package.

In the southern field of the anthracite region of Pennsylvania, many of the coal seams dip at angles of 40" to 50" from the horizontal. For transportation purposes, "tunnels" are driven across the coal measures and, occasionally, "rock gangways," beside the seams and parallel with them. The use of gangways driven in country rock appears to be increasing, as they avoid the maintenance of long gangways in coal, which eventually are driven to the colliery boundaries, and permit mining from a number of intermediate blocks without interference. The rock consists of slates or sandstones of moderate hardness, which may range into very hard, highly siliceous, fine-grained conglomerates. In this distinctly bedded formation, the direction of the heading, whether parallel with or across the structure, makes it necessary to distribute the drill holes in a different pattern to break the ground, but does not change loading conditions. In 1932, practically all the mucking was done by hand, and it was the established custom to use four men on two drills for drilling and breaking the ground, and five for loading it out. A driver and mule was needed in addition, to assemble the rock cars at a siding or branching track in the rear, pending their final disposal. This might occupy the driver's whole time, or if the length of haul were short, he might be able to do other useful work. It was thought possible in 1932 to reduce the cost of driving such headings in rock by mechanical loading, and to investigate this subject a scraper loader was used in a section of tunnel then being driven. Operations while driving 195 ft. of this tunnel using a scraper loader were carefully observed. Time studies were made of the loading, and records made of the routine of breaking ground, but not in such detail. Tunnels or gangways in the colliery are 7 ft. high above the rails, by 10 ft. wide, which requires a minimum of 8 ft. in height, broken to allow for rails and ties. This cross section is of sufficient size to permit the use of any one of several types of power loaders, but for this demonstration it was found most convenient to use a scraper loader.

As MOST of the oil production comes from leased-lands and not fee property, I shall refer to "leases" as covering the producing tracts. To produce oil, leases on land must first be obtained. Well-selected leases are all important. Not many years ago, the location for drilling for oil in wildcat territory was too frequently determined by the nearness, of adequate water and fuel supply, or with a view to cheapness of transportation. To some extent, the "creekology" theory is the result of the number of wildcat tests made near streams, to obtain water for operations. Now, an up-to-date operator will depend on his geologists for his location and, in many cases, will spend thousands of dollars to get water to it. The wisdom of following the geologist rather than the creek has been abundantly demonstrated in the past few years. In vast territories, where dry holes are spotted at intervals of a few miles or less. apart, and by reason of which these territories have been condemned for oil, the geologist is now finding many more spots that are producing large quantities of oil. No better tribute to the work of the geologist can be found than the surface and subsurface work being done in practically all parts of Oklahoma and the development had as a result of this, work. A land department is usually organized by placing in charge a man who is not only acquainted with the oil development, but who is a shrewd buyer, a first requisite for which should be unquestioned integrity. It takes a shrewd buyer to resist the persuasive lease broker, frequently backed by a geological picture from which the oil fairly drips. The geologist can help a lot by being absolutely honest when he makes these pictures; he will also thus strengthen his own cause. A geologist should interpret his own work and put his name behind his interpretation. If he does not he is liable to be misquoted and often discredited, as a result, by some overzealous lease broker giving an interpretation never intended by the geologist.

An approximate mathematical solution is found for the problem of unidimensional solidification of a slab of a binary alloy with time-dependent surface temperature. For the model considered, the solid skin does not form until the liquidus front has moved a certain distance. This distance depends on the rate of cooling and can be as large as half the thickness of the slab when the cooling rate is small. Assuming that the THE process of unidirectional solidification of binary alloys with constant surface temperature was analyzed by the present authors in a recent paper.' In the previous analyses, the surface temperature was considered to be lowered instantaneously, at the beginning of solidification, from its initial value to some surface temperature decreases linearly with time and that the solidus and the liquidus lines are straight, calculations are made of the temperature and concentration distributions, movements of the liquidus and the solidus fronts, as well as changes of temperature, solid fraction, and solute concentration of the liquid at the center of the slab. arbitrary temperature, lower than the solidus temperature. Although the solution of the problem for the case of constant surface temperature has some practical applications, instantaneous changes of temperature are physically impossible. Present theoretical study of the unidirectional solidification of a binary alloy is based on a more realistic model, i.e., in this case, the surface temperature of the slab decreases from its initial value continuously with solidification time. This paper presents results of static capillary pressure measprements made both by the restored-state and by the mercury-injection methods, and of dynamic capillary pressure measurements made by the Hassler technique. The results indicate a variation from sample to sample of the factor used to convert capillary pressure obtained by mercury injection to those applicable to a water-gas system. Static capillary pressures measured by the restored-state method were found to be in close agreement with dynamic capillary pressures, indicating that data obtained from static measurements may be utilized with confidenre in the solution of dynamic problems of fluid flow. Experimental data are presented on the use of "J-curves" for the correlation of capillary pressure-saturation relations for a number of cores from a particular geologic formation. It is shown that the correlation was improved in some cases by reqtricting it to rertain lithologic classifications. INTRODUCTION The Meaning and Importance of Capillary Pressure The coexistence of two or more immiscible fluids within the voids of a porous medium, such as reservoir rock, gives rise to capillary forces. Because of the interfacial tension existing at the boundary between two immiscible fluids in a pore space, the interface is curved, and there is a pressure difference across the interface. This pressure difference is termed the capillary pressure. The magnitude of the capillary pressure between two immiscible fluids which together fill a porous medium depends upon several factors: the textural properties of the medium, the wettability of the medium, the interfacial tension between the fluids, the respective saturations of the fluids, and the manner in which these saturations are attained. For a given pair of immiscible fluids in a particular sample of reservoir rock, the capillary pressure is a unique function of the fluid saturation, provided that the saturation of the fluid which wets the rock has previously been decreased unidirectionally from an initially complete saturation. During the summer of 1916, while on a visit to the United States Agricultural Experiment Station at Mayaguez, Porto Rico, the writers were told by D. W. May, the director, that an occurrence of manganese ore had been reported from the mesa southeast of Mayaguez. A visit to the locality showed that the mesa is covered by a mantle of bright red soil resting upon serpentine. Here and there over its surface concretionary masses of limonite have been mashed out of this soil. These were apparently mistaken for manganese ore. On account of the similarity of this occurrence to the extensive iron deposits of northeastern Cuba, it was thought that a brief description based upon a two days'reconnaissance survey of the area mould be of scientific interest. Mayaguez is on the west coast of Porto Rico, at Mayaguez Bay, which is the third in importance of the harbors of the island. One of the operations of the J. L. Shiely Co. is quarrying in a hard granite gneiss with intrusions of gabbro or trap. During the winter of 1948-1949 the quarry ramp was lowered about 30 ft and during the 1949 season practically all drilling was done from the quarry floor, developing a face from 72 to 83 ft for the entire quarry area. The performance and cost table shows our record for 1948 and 1949.

Carbm dioxide, which exists metastably as a constantly subliming molecular solid in a normal room-temperature environment, has been shown to exhibit many microstructural features which are similar to those observed in metals and ceramics at temperatures approaching their melting points. An examinution has been made of some of the factors affecting a brittleness condition known as "smzdiness" which occurs in solid carbon dioxide. It has been shown to be highly dependent on manufacturing and storage conditions and is thought to be a marked intergranu-lay brittleness which results from a combination of excessive grain growth and a concentration of gas-filled pores at the grain boundaries. In the course of an investigation carried out to explain certain physical and mechanical properties of solid carbon dioxide, observations were made of the microstructure and fragmentation of samples after fabrication and storage under varying conditions. Many similarities between the structures of solid carbon dioxide observed under ambient conditions and those existing in metal and ceramic systems at temperatures approaching their melting points have been observed. There are, however, important differences between solid carbon dioxide and the common metallic and ionic solids which result primarily from the differences in the nature of the bonding forces. Despite these differences, the relative ease with which certain microscopic observations can be carried out, may make solid carbon dioxide a useful material model for the physical metallurgist and the ceramist. It could also prove a valuable material for educational purposes where it is required to illustrate grain phenomena which normally can only be seen with the aid of a high-temperature microscope, and after prolonged chemical or thermal etching.

The literature dealing with the physical constants of nickel is so fragmentary and unrelated that a synopsis presents unusual difficulties. It is only within the last few years that investigators have understood the importance of placing on record not only the determinations they have made but also the composition, physical treatment, and past history of the material investigated. For this reason much of the earlier literature is valueless. Determinations have been made of the same physical constants on samples differing widely in origin, composition, and treatment, and the results differ widely among themselves. In the first place nickel is almost as flexible a term as steel. Its physical properties are widely influenced by its composition and treatment. It absorbs large quantities of gases and is exceedingly difficult to prepare in a state of chemical purity comparable to gold, silver, or copper. It is vitally affected by thermal and mechanical treatment. Hence in the following pages the recorded literature, where quoted, must be accepted with a certain reserve and used, as far as possible, as a check on later observations, in which these important factors are noted. In every case where new determinations are given, an attempt has been made to record all available information concerning the composition and treatment of the material used so that the data may serve as stepping-stones toward a wider knowledge of the properties of the metal. As this synopsis is an attempt by men of metallurgical training to do what should long before have been done by physicists, it is to be expected that certain errors may have crept in. It is, perhaps, more important to put on record the particulars of experiments that are derided failures than those that are successful, as those of the latter class are certain to live, while the former may be lost sight of in a short time, and repeated by others. TO this end, I propose to give the particulars of a straight or no-bosh furnace just tried at the Chester (New Jersey) works, which was such a decided failure as to leave no doubt of the plan being wrong, and determining the necessity of a bosh of some kind, as of old. Some experiences during the past year led me to suppose that the bosh or belly of a furnace was unnecessary, and that the contraction of the walls toward the bottom for the stock to wedge in, in its descent, facilitated dirty walls and scaffolding; hence, irregularity and high fuel. I concluded, however, that a very shallow bosh for a skew-back support to the stock would be necessary, and that the proper place for this was in the tuyere-section, beginning just below the tuyeres and ending just above them, where there is nothing in the solid state but fuel, which is consuming, and no slipping or travel of stock takes place. The cubical capacity of a furnace of this design would necessarily be much less than in the old style, unless it was made very much higher. But I assumed that the loss of room for reduction could be overcome by making the size of the ore and stone charged much smaller, so that the gases would act more quickly. The next point was, what should be the size of the shaft, crucible, tuyere-circle, and tunnel-head for a given quantity of air? My first design was 12 feet diameter of shaft for 7000 feet of air, with a 9-foot crucible and 8-foot toyere-circle. This I soon reduced to 8-foot shaft diameter, which I concluded was large enongh for economical work, if regular travel of the stock on the walls could be maintained. I consulted with a number of experienced furnacemen and furnace-engineers, and the plan was well thought of by many of them; and, as I had also some offers of financial aid from them toward the risk of trying the experiment, my firm concluded

Since 1950, rotary-drilled, large-diameter holes, "big holes", with depths to over 300 ft and diameters of over 30 in., have become numerous and widespread. 50 such holes have been drilled for access shafts to LPG mined caverns. Over 70 holes have been drilled for various other commercial activities. Over 150 holes have been drilled by the AEC for atomic testing purposes. These holes have ranged up to 300-in. diam with 1600-ft depths, 120- in. diam with 570-ft depths, and 72-in. diam with 4800-ft depths. Equipment is now available to drill a wide range of big holes for varied requirements. At least a dozen drilling contractors are participating or have participated in the drilling of big holes. The accompanying tables show pertinent historical, technical and economic data on over 250 holes. The purpose of this paper is to present a review of the big hole drilling equipment available, a compilation of the available data on large-diameter holes, to show the experience obtained to date and to show that big hole drilling is feasible and available to the industry.

CREEP investigators have made extensive studies to determine the interrelation of stress, temperature and the tensile creep rates of metals. It has been suggested that at small stresses the secondary or constant creep rates obey a simple viscous law. Building upon this suggestion, departure from pure viscosity as stress increases may be expressed mathematically as a consequence of reversibly altered viscosity or "flowability" in the same sense that temperature change reversibly alters viscosity. From the index to alteration of viscosity, a value for the energy of secondary creep may be derived having the magnitude of the free energy of vaporized metal. The suggestion is made that applica-tion of stress alters the energy of secondary creep. Strain energy is argued to be but a minor factor in the energetics of secondary creep. A deformation mechanism involving the large energy associated with secondary creep implies a sort of solid self-diffusion process. Evidence indicates that creep strain above the recrystallization temperature takes place by crystallographically directed self-diffusion at grain boundaries and points of crystal defects. A self-diffusion theory of secondary creep is proposed, embracing the principles of the Dushman-Langmuir theory of solid diffusion. An equation is suggested whereby the rate of tensile creep may be related directly to the physical and struc-tural character of the solid metal.

THE fall meeting at El Paso this year (Oct. 13¬15) will be of unusual interest due to the international atmosphere imparted by the many engineers from Mexico, who are making arrangements to attend this meeting. The meeting will be held jointly with the Western Division of the American Mining Congress. Cooperating in the program will be the representative society of Mexican engineers known as Centro National de Ingenieros of Mexico City, who are plan¬ning on sending many delegates and well known Mexican engineers to the convention. The cooperation of the West Texas Geological Society and the American Association of Petroleum Geologists has also been secured. Brent N. Rickard, manager of the El Paso Smelting Works of the American Smelting & Refining Co. at El Paso, Tex., is general chairman in charge of arrangements. He is receiving splendid cooperation from the Mining Department of the El Paso Chamber of Commerce and from the business people of El Paso, who feel highly honored in having these mining societies meet with them this year.

At the close of the Bethlehem Meeting, the writer was experimenting with large fuel-charges, 4000 Ibs. basis, as compared with 2000 Ibs., hot had not made sufficient progress to draw any safe conclusions. Previously me had always used 2000 Ibs. fuel, the ore-burden being proportioned to this as a basis. I could never persuade myself that there was any advantage to be derived from following the more popular method of larger fuel-charges. Our men were accustomed to the old way of filling ; and we did not care to run the risk of the errors likely to follow any alteration in routine work, particulary as I could not, by my course of reasoning, discover ally compensating gain. Nevertheless, after reading Mr. Gordon's discussion of Mr. Birkinbine's paper, '' Operations of Warwick Furnace from August 27th, 1880, to September 1st, 1885" (Transactions, xiv., 833), I determined to test by actual experiment the value of large fuel-charges : the change was made in the week commencing March 28th, 1886, and continued until July 25th, about four months. The fuel and ores remained during the trial the same as had been used before, and have been used since. For the first two weeks, the furnace worked with great regularity, giving excellent results, exceeding those of the two weeks immediately preceding. But for my remembrance that the furnace had on former occasions worked with equal uniformity for longer periods without any apparent reason, I should doubtless have concluded that this improvement was due to the different method of filling and congratulated myself that a means had at last been found to prevent inconvenient "dirt" accumulations. Before abjuring my previous skepticism, however, I resolved to pursue the trial further. The fourth meek developed the peculiar conditions that had prevailed previous to the change; and these continued with more or less frequency during May, June and July. At last, finding no improvement over the smaller charges—no change in fact for better or for worse—I commenced filling the 2000 lbs. fuel-charge in the latter part of July, and have continued it up to present writing, September 4th.
