ONE of the problems that confronts the chronicler of the Porphyry story is to determine the date from which Morenci should be regarded as one of the group. The mines have the distinction of being the first operated in Arizona for copper. A small smelter was in operation as early as 1873 and in the eighties two smelters accounted for a substantial production ranging from 3,000,000 to 6,000,000 lb. per year. The first concentrator was built in 1886, but the ores were principally oxidized, and direct smelting ore still supplied most of the production. As early as 1893, the mining of somewhat leaner porphyry ores, containing copper in the form of the sulphide mineral, chalcocite, was commenced; but these still were of comparatively high grade and the concentrators were plants of 100 to 400 tons daily capacity. Moreover, the backbone of operations was still the production of rich oxidized ores for direct smelting. They assayed 10 to 15 per cent copper and the sulphide milling ores assayed 3 to 4 per cent. A significant comment appears in the Copper Handbook for 1908. Speaking of the Arizona Copper Co., Ltd., which was to become the most important component of the present Morenci enterprise, the editor, Horace Stevens, says: "A tremendous amount of ore is in sight, ore reserves . . . being estimated at 10,370,600 tons . . . " It seems fair to infer from this that the property was not yet regarded as an immense low-grade mine, but that the copper content of perhaps 70 lb, to the ton made an ore of "medium " grade even according to the standards of the time. The Porto Marghera plant was erected in 1936 for the production of 10,000 tons of electrolytic zinc annually. Since then it has been continuously enlarged until annual production of the metal reached 40,000 tons in 1969. At the same time the processing cycle was modified bringing it up to date with modern techniques, and was completed by installations for the recovery of by-products in the minerals treated and subsequent processing of the base metal. 90% of the zinc produced is of 99.993% purity . At present the plant comprises, first of all, the zinc blende desulphuration department which has a single modern fluid bed furnace capable of processing 220 - 250 tons of dry crude mineral daily; it is connected to the sulphuric acid plant with its three catalysis sections each capable of producing 60-70 tons of sul9huri.c acid monohydrate daily. IN THE present day manufacture of glass nearly pure quartz sands are used almost exclusively as the source of the silica, which is the major constituent of all common varieties of glass. Ordinary soda-lime, such as bottle, common tableware, plate, and window glasses, contain from 65 to 75 per cent. of silica. OCCURRENCE Glass sands occur in nature either in the form of loose, unconsolidated sediments or in deposits in which the individual grains have been more or less thoroughly bound together by some cementing agent so as to form sandstones. While deposits of sand and sandstones occur both widely and abundantly distributed, deposits that are sufficiently free from other constituents than quartz grains, so that they can be employed in the manufacture of the better grades of glass, are, comparatively speaking, of rare occurrence. The major portion of the glass sand produced in the United States comes from sandstones. In order to be suitable for glass sand, they should be rather friable. The rock should break down readily along the cementing material between the grains and should not break across the grains rather than along the bond. Some of the sandstones used are so friable that only light shots of slow-burning dynamite are necessary to disintegrate them sufficiently for hydraulic mining, while others have to be passed through crushers in order to disintegrate the rock into its individual grains.

Season cracking of 70-30 cartridge brass cases of small arms and artillery ammunition has been under investigation at the Frankford Arsenal for many years. The nature of this stress-corrosion failure has been found to be intergranular. Much of this work, however, has been directed toward improvements in method of manufacturing the cases so as to reduce the tendency to season crack and little progress had been made toward finding the source of the chemical agent producing the inter- granular corrosion. Ammonia has been shown to produce season cracking in brass and is known to be present in certain atmospheres, particularly industrial, in sufficient concentration to cause cracking. However, in the case of small arms ammunition, the hypothesis that atmospheric ammonia is the cause will not hold, since small arms ammunition is hermetically sealed during storage and yet occasional lots are found to have cracked after 3 to 5 yr. storage. Much of the early study of season cracking in small arms ammunition was done by Nicholas H. Murdza of the Frank- ford Arsenal. In 1936, he suggested that the corrosive agent might be one of the decomposition products of smokeless powder and mentioned nitrogen oxides specifically. Then in 1937, Murdza suggested that the breakdown of smokeless powder in storage resulted in the formation not only of nitrogen oxides but also ammonia

In his highly interesting paper, Piping and Segregation in Steel Ingots,' Prof. Howe emphasizes the effect of successive phases of internal pressure in the ingot in the evolution of gas, and the consequent formation of blow-holes. From his statements in other places, it may be inferred that he does not here intend to ignore the other variable factor, temperature, but rather to discuss this one more particularly. At all events, it is my purpose not to engage in controversy with Prof. Howe, but, rather to contribute, towards the complete elucidation of this important subject which we all desire, my own views and experience. If, in doing so, I specially emphasize other factors than pressure, I need not be understood as denying what I do not think it necessary to discuss fully. Nor, in presenting my own original conclusions, need I be understood as claiming to be the first who ever reached or announced them. Many things are asserted or suggested upon inconclusive evidence; and to confirm such tentative propositions may be as valuable a service as to overthrow them. In the following passage, Prof. Howe adduces analogies, based upon the behavior of charcoal and of water, respectively, which seem to me questionable : "In general, the solvent power falls as the pressure falls ; and in general it rises as the temperature falls. Thus, to heat a solid, for instance charcoal, may expel part of its dissolved gas ; and a tumbler of water drawn cold from the faucet gradually evolves gas, as it stands and warms up on the sideboard." (p. 72.) Charcoal is a solid body, which has the property not only of absorbing gases in large quantities, but also of expelling the thus absorbed gases upon heating. Its success in mapping oil structure is due to the unique and definite nature of the depth data obtained. While articles on the principle and results of this method continue to appear in increasing number, there is virtually nothing published about the instruments used in this work. Several years ago, the writer started an experimental and theoretical investigation with the object of determining which characteristics would be best adapted to the problem at hand. As a result, an equipment was developed which has proved its usefulness in a great number of field tests. W. E. Pugh, now with the Empire Oil and Refining Co., joined the writer, in 1931 and 1932, in the laboratory experiments and field tests. In 1933, a paper was written on Certain Instrument and Field Problems in Reflection Seismology, and submitted to the Institute. A Discussion at a meeting of the New York Section, Dec. 2, 1914 D. H. BROWNE.-If 35 years ago we had met to discuss the subject that is before us to-night, the criticism that we must all be mad or we would not be here at all would have been perfectly applicable. No group of men would have come together a generation ago to discuss the subject of smelting ores without extraneous fuel, or largely by the oxidation of their own impurities, without incurring the imputation of being crazy. But metallurgy, like all other branches of human industry, progresses by idealism. In every generation there are old men who see visions and young men who dream dreams. Thirty-five years ago John Hollway conceived the idea that in the Rio Tinto ore the sulphur and iron, if properly oxidized, could be made to produce heat enough to carry on the smelting of the ores. He saw the vision. Twenty-five years ago Mr. Austin, of Montana, took out a patent on a furnace in which to carry out Hollway's ideas. He dreamed the dream. Twenty years ago a man working in Montana grasped the possibilities of this idea. To him has been given that inexpressible pleasure which comes from realizing the idea and making the concept concrete. Gentlemen, it gives me great pleasure to introduce to you the man who made the ideal real, Robert Sticht, of Tasmania. ROBERT C. It is true it has been my good fortune to be able to put some sort of method into the "madness" of 25 years ago; but I am not the originator of the idea, nor the only one who has carried it out. Mr. Browne mentioned the originator, who undoubtedly is Mr. Hollway. He also mentioned Mr. Austin, who gave the first instigation to pyrite smelting as now practiced. As against both of these men I was fortunate enough to be able to command the necessary natural resources to carry out the idea continuously in a practical way, so as to make it permanently possible.

Short cuts for determining the constants of oil decline curves, with the method of least squares as a starting point, are presented and applications made to practical examples. The nature of the raw data does not justify rigid adherence to the orthodox theory but does lend justification to convenient methods of approximation within reasonable limits. If the conventional form y = kxn were changed to y = k(x + c)', methods of determining the curves would be simplified and greater uniformity in calculated results would probably follow. As A result of the publication, several years ago, of some articles on determining the constants of empirical formulas, the determining the constant's of types of curves used for estimating the production decline of oil wells was brought to the writer for study. Methods requiring a minimum of time and labor and a maximum of rigor were sought, as it appeared that the nature of the data from which such curves are computed and the relative uncertainty of occurrence of the events predicted from them did not justify close adherence to the theory on which the solution of such problems is ordinarily based. The technical deficiencies of the solutions presented in this paper, from the standpoint of the method of least squares, are readily apparent to those familiar with that method, but their presentation in detail here is irrelevant to the subject matter. However, it is the author's conviction, after a rather exhaustive study of the problem, that the value of the solutions lose little by the approximate application of the conventional theory. It must be understood by those who use these formulas that the solutions herein given, and the formulas based on them, are merely facilities to aid the valuation engineer in forecasting future events. It is assumed, also, that before application is made of them, prescient judgment based on the circumstances in each case, shows that the forecast has some probability of realization. On this basis only will these formulas be found useful.

On Friday, Jan. 17, the thirteenth impression of the Perkin Medal was presented to Dr. Frederick Gardner Cottrell, at a meeting of the New York Section of the Society of Chemical Industry, held at the Chemists' Club, in New York City. The presentation address was delivered by Dr. C. F. Chandler, Senior Past President of the Society. The medal was awarded for the recipient's work in the electrical precipitation of suspended particles in gases. Dr. Cottrell's career, which is so familiar to members of the Institute, was sketched by Dr. Chandler. He told at some length of the experiments leading up to the final solution of electrostatic precipitation, which has done so much to solve the problem of smelter smoke. The principal interest in Dr. Cottrell's speech of acceptance lay in his remarks about helium, the production of which has been so reduced in cost that it has practically supplanted the use of hydrogen for inflation purposes in war balloons. He said: "Two or three weeks after war was declared in 1917, Dr. R. B. Moore attended a meeting of the American Chemical Society in Kansas City. At the general session, Mr. Seibel of the University of Kansas, gave a paper on krypton and xenon in some of the natural gases of Kansas. At the end of his paper, he expressed regret that at such a time, when everyone was thinking of war problems, his paper was of a purely scientific nature and had no practical bearing on the war. Dr. Moore immediately got up and said that he did not agree with Mr. Seibel. The presence of helium in those wells could, and should, have a very practical bearing on the war, as this gas could be extracted in quantity from the natural gas and used for balloons and Zeppelins. He pointed out some of the natural advantages of helium over hydrogen, and quoted Sir William Ramsey's letter advocating the use of helium for airships. The general attitude of those present was one of scepticism, so he finally asked Dr. Cady for his opinion who stated that he believed-the thing could be done, but was very doubtful whether it could ever be made practical on account of the cost." Dr. Moore in a letter wrote: "That same day I talked to Dr. Parsons, who was present at the meeting and was returning to Washington almost immediately. I told him what had happened, and that I believed the matter should be taken up by the Bureau at once and presented to the War Department. He promised to do this as soon as he got to Washington; and I know that he did take the matter up with other Bureau officials." Dr. Cottrell continued in part: News of Ramsey's suggestions also reached this .country through other channels and eventually came to our attention. Professors Satterly and Patterson of the University of Toronto commenced experimentation of the subject Jan. 1, 1916. Col. G. A. Burrell, who headed the research department of the Gas Warfare Service at the American University, tells me that Cady's experiments had also suggested similar possibilities to him.

During 1934, over 17,000 oil wells were completed in the United States, and it is expected that over 20,000 additional wells will be drilled during the current year. Were it not for the remarkable progress made during recent years in the improvement of drilling technique and in the development of equipment used in the production phase of the oil industry, it is doubtful whether sufficient oil could be produced to meet present requirements. A few years ago, wells seldom were deeper than 3500 to 4000 ft., owing to the limitations of the drilling methods and equipment employed. Today, however, through the application of scientific drilling methods and the adaptation of modern equipment and improved materials, many wells range from 6000 to 8000 ft. in depth, and a few recent completions exceed 10,000 feet. Drill Tools Modern rotary drilling tools are the product of ingenious design and careful selection and adaptation of materials used in their construction. They must withstand terrific abrasion and, because of their compactness, must be designed to resist exceedingly high unit stresses. In bits, core drills and reamers, the bodies are made of either forged or cast alloy steels, heat-treated to develop a combination of high strength and toughness. To provide sufficient strength to the threaded portions and to protect the threads from distortion or damage, the box or pin sections of the tools are hardened to approximately 310 to 330 Brine11 hardness number. "It shall be within the discretion of the Board of Directors to establish a medal to be known as the Charles F. Rand Memorial Medal to be awarded at such a time 'and under such rules as may be determined by the Board of Directors, for Distinguished Achievement in Mining Administration." The establishment of this medal was announced at the annual meeting in February, 1932, the term "mining" being defined in its broad sense to include metallurgy and petroleum. The members of the Charles F. Rand Foundation Award Committee, of which J. V. W. Reynders is Chairman, are listed on page 12. In both 1938 and 1939, the Committee gave consideration to the question of choosing a medalist but in each year the decision was reached to give financial help to other projects as an alternative. In 1938, publication of a monograph on "Struc¬ture of Ore Deposits in the Continen¬tal Framework" and of a booklet en¬titled "The Call for Endowment" was financed; and in 1939, a special appro¬priation was made to defray the ex¬ penses of special speakers for Affiliated Student Societies of the Institute. In 1940, the Committee elected to nominate a candidate for the medal and unanimously selected Robert, Crooks Stanley, Chairman of the Board of the International Nickel Co. This recom¬mendation was approved by the Board of Directors and Mr. Stanley became the first recipient of the medal. Citation for Award to Robert Crook,, Stanley. Twenty-two pit slides that occurred in two Canadian open pit mining properties are analyzed. Information on the results of laboratory tests of the rocks and a brief description of the geological environment are also presented. One deduction from the study is that slides seem to be predictable by using established theory. This corroboration indicates that, contrary to normal mining practice, the appropriate slope angle should vary with the height of the wall. In addition, if the general ground water level around an open pit can be reduced, the appropriate slope angles of the walls could then be increased by a determinable amount. The ultimate objective of these investigations is to determine the relationship between the percentage probability of failure of any slope designed with specific strength paraheters. With this relationship it would then be possible to determine optimum slope angles. Because of changes in various economic factors, open pits are now being mined to much greater depths than previously. The need to keep stripping ratios low without endanrrerine.-- lives and equipment provides a strong incentive to determine the maximum practicable wall slopes. Applied research work is currently being conducted to establish the methods for analyzing optimum slopes.

Variation of the horizontal permeability (parallel to the bedding plane) in the vertical section of reservoir rocks has long been observed as a characteristic of a normally heterogeneous system which reservoir rock represent. The use of a recently developed water injection profile device offered opportunity to measure with a high degree of reliability the rate of inflow of water into Burbank sandstone in wells previously cored. Water injection profiles were not correlative with core permeability profiles in such wells. Apparently the vertical permeability substantially influences the flow between strata in a formation in a manner as to void the usual conclusions that have been drawn from consideration of the horizontal permeability measurements alone. The results obtained in comparing water injection profiles with horizontal permeability profiles suggest that many of the usual production operations based upon "selective" behavior or treatment of rock exposed in well bores need to he re-valuated and re-examined. INTRODUCTION Petroleum reservoir rock are heterogeneous systems. Heterogeneity exists in respect to lithologic character insofar as such rock are composed of distinguishable solid phases. Heterogeneity also exists in respect to certain properties, such as porosity and permeability, that vary due to variation of the physi-cal structure of the rock. Except in exceptional cases, both the horizontal permeability (measured parallel to the bedding planes) and the vertical permeability (measured perpendirularly to the bedding planes) exhibit significant variation in any common source of supply. The variation in horizontal permeability. as reflected by con. analyses. has drawn the greatest attention of petroleum technologists probably out of the general notion that the mass movement of fluids in a reservoir is predimonantly in the horizontal direction. Furthermore, in the usual case, the rock permeability measured in the horizontal direction is greater than that in the vertical. The variation of horizontal permeability of reservoir rock has been the basis for developing a number of operating practices and procedures intended to improve the petroleum production operation. Many such procedures are referred to as "selective" in the sense that the practice is intended to control the flow to a more. or less. permeable interval within the common source of Supply. It is often said that such practices are "tailored" to the permeability profile. The practices referred to involve, among others, the following: selective perforation of casing; selective shooting, acidizing and plugging: plugging back to intervals of low permeability; and, regulation of flow to prevent coning of water or gas, or irregular encroachment of water or gas. Certain expressed notions involving a concept of "by-passing," or "trappingl" that are held to be particularly harmful in causing the avoidable loss of recoverable petroleum have grown from observed variations in the horizontal permeability. Oftentimes estimates of the reserve of a common source of supply are tempered by conclusions relating variation in horizontal permeability to recover-ability of the oil-in-place. Certain conclusions attributed to the significance of the variation of the horizontal Permeabilitv often extend to the design and operation of pressure-maintenance projects involving both water flooding and gas-injection. Many advocate increasing the number of injection wells, advocate maintaining uniform and equidistant input-output well patterns, or advocate so-called "dispersed" gas-drive techniques rather than gas-cap injection because the permeability profile of cored wells is supposed to indicate that "by-passing" or "trapping" would otherwise exist. It is important, therefore, to have an opportunity to test whether the variation in the horizontal permeability found through core analyses of a typical reservoir rock is sufficient to establish the paths of fluid flow in a reservoir. It is particularly important to have an opportunity to determine whether flow at the sand face of a well conforms to the permeability profile as established by core analyses. In that manner, the merit of certain 50-called "selective" operating procedures and other notions may be evaluated. The purpose of this paper is to compare horizontal permeability profiles of wells in the Bartlesville (Bur-bank) sandstone with water injection profiles, for the purpose of showing that there is no correlation between the horizontal permeability of a core and the water intake characteristics of a typical sandstone. GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF BARTLESVILLE (BURBANK) SANDSTONE The Bartlesville sandstones of Northeastern Oklahoma are off-shore bar deposits.' Although other reservoirs had different processes associated with their deposition or with the formation of their porous, permeable structure, the l!artlesville sandstones on which these field Fields were made are, in every respect. typical petroleum reservoir rock. The permeability of the Bartlesville sandstones shows a typical variation in both the horizontal and vertical direction. Furthermore, the permeability profile logs of wells in any pool are not correlative, even as between wells as close as 660 ft and 330 ft apart.'. The same condition exists in such sand-tones as the Jones Sand at Shuler' and is the ordinary and usual characteristic of reservoir rock. THE FIELD DATA The data reported herein are those obtained from coring of nine wells on the center of ten-acre locations for the purpose of providing water-injection wells in the Bartlesville (Burbank)

In process and plant simulation, more reliable prediction of industrial results and evaluation of data for designing purposes may be attained by the combined use of (a) modeling and simulation of ore characteristics and (b) modeling and simulation of integrated plant operations. The systems for modeling and simulation of ore characteristics are discussed as well as the conditions in which their use may be necessary (complex structure of the ore-body and variability of the ore fed to the plant). Two examples, for coal and bauxite run-of-mine (ROM), are reported. The procedure of linking the process unit models and the approaches for the solution of integrated systems are indicated. A general-purpose program for the simulation of integrated plant operations is described, and some examples of its use are reported.

ABOUT 15 varieties, or modifications, of the best magnesium available were prepared and subjected to etching tests, then examined for microstructure. Of the 30-odd etching reagents that were tried, nearly half, mostly ammonium salts, etched the metal satisfactorily. The surfacing and etching of magnesium is shown to be a very simple and quick operation. The density and hardness of magnesium were determined. The most interesting new observations relate to the finding of the hexagonal etch figures, the crystal laminations, and the fact that the metal is plastic, cold, when restrained or quickly deformed. Under slowly applied pressure cold metal deforms slightly, then shears to fracture without plastic flow: The chief structural features of magnesium are presented in two reduced photographs and 30 photomicrographs.

The safety of mine workers has received more attention from both State and Federal law-making bodies than any other industry, a fact that shows clearly the hazardous nature of the industry. The last, but by no means the least, of the measures adopted for the protection of mine workers, is workmen's compensation legislation. This is proving to be a powerful instrument for greater safety in the industries, from the fact that special stress is laid not on how the accident happened or who may have been responsible for it, but on how badly the employee is hurt by it. The injured person does not have to employ lawyers to prove his case, because- the mere fact of his employment is proof of his right to compensation. The immediate effect of such legislation is the certainty confronting the mine operator that he must. pay out large sums for every accident, regardless of its cause, thus adding materially to the cost of the production of his coal. his fact furnished to the operator the strongest incentive to reduce the causes of accidents; not that the operator has ever lacked reasonable consideration for the welfare of his employees and a proper humane interest in their safety, but his engrossmentin earning his daily livelihood has been so great that he has not felt that he had the time to devote to the safety of the operation. This time he must now find because of the actual cash value of the prevention of accidents in his mines. This agency alone proved inadequate to bring about a material improvement because operators have always been willing enough to improve safety conditions when possible to do so within reasonable limits of their financial ability. The requirement in the Workmen's Compensation Laws of several of the States, that the mine operator shall insure as a guarantee of his ability to meet his compensation obligations, has furnished the needed incentive, moral and financial, necessary to the prompt and effective dissemination of a more general knowledge of the causes and

Several very interesting articles have been written on the caving system of mining, but most of these papers have dealt separately with the slusher system or the chute and grizzly system. In this paper, a comparison will be made of the two methods, both of which are being used at the Climax mine. The mine is on the Continental Divide, in central Colorado, at an altitude of approximately 11,500 ft. above sea level. The long, cold winters, characteristic of the high Rockies, create a number of operating problems not usually found in other mining areas. The Ore Body The Climax ore body is just east of the Mosquito fault. This structural deformation has brought the granite on the east against the sedimentary rocks on the west. The ore occurs in an intensely altered granite and schist around a silicified granite core. The ore is in a highly fractured zone of moderate silicification. The principal mineral, molybdenite, is found in these fractures. Barren dikes of granite porphyry cut through the ore body and core with no apparent regularity. The grade of the ore is fairly uniform and gradually decreases toward the footwall core and also into the hanging-wall granite. The footwall and hanging wall are determined entirely by assays. The ore body is roughly dome-shaped, with the apex truncated at the surface. It is covered to varying depths with talus. A horizontal section of the ore body on the Phillipson level appears as an annular ellipse surrounding the footwall core. The ring of ore varies in width from 300 ft. to as much as 800 ft. The north-south axis of the core is about 1200 ft. and the east-west axis is about 1800 ft. In the ore zone, the rock is sufficiently strong to maintain reasonably large openings, and openings larger than haulage drifts usually have to be supported. The ore is cut by a great many fractures and shears and breaks into rather large blocks when caved, necessitating considerable secondary blasting. The waste that overlies the ore body breaks relatively fine in comparison with the size of the blocks of the caved ore and tends to run through the broken ore in the cave, causing dilution unless the draw is carefully controlled. Mining Systems For several years the ore was mined by the chute and grizzly system, a system that differs from that used in other caving mines only in the size of openings and equipment. Under the Communist regime marked industrial progress has been achieved on the China mainland. Within a decade, the country has been transformed from an economy primarily agricultural to one bristling with industrial possibilities. The industrial capacity of Communist China is beginning to approach that of Japan and will probably surpass it by 1962, the last year of the Second Five-Year Plan. The slogan already is Beat the United Kingdom by 1972, a goal which most observers feel will be achieved ahead of schedule. During the early years of the industrialization program in Communist China, emphasis has been placed on basic goods; hence additional time will be needed to make large quantities of the more complicated products. However, regardless of the current stage of industrial development, it is apparent that the necessary forward momentum has been created. The many capital construction projects being brought into production and the additional projects being initiated confirm this observation. The accuracy of Communist China's industrial statistics can be questioned, but their order of magnitude is clear. To properly evaluate the industrial capability of the country, differentiation must be made between the absolute quantities that reflect overall strength and the per capita quantities that reflect living standards. While Communist China is well on the road to becoming a world power, its living standards will remain below European levels for many years to come.

It is realized that the depth of fluid maintained in a pumping well is sometimes influenced by other considerations than the quantity of fluid that will enter the well: the prevention of sand incursion, prevention of waste of natural gas, and the maintenance of a suitable submergence for the pump, for example. These latter factors have an important influence on the productivity of the well, so that otherwise unwarranted fluid levels must sometimes be maintained to offset them; but where the handling of unconsolidated sands is not a problem of consequence and where water has been properly excluded, the principles developed here and the practices recommended should apply. The principal objective of the producer should be to produce the maximum quantity of oil in the shortest possible time. Any method or equipment that will increase the rate of production during the early years of the life of the well, when gas pressure is high, will greatly augment the ultimate production. The maintenance of a proper fluid level in the well at all times will go far toward accomplishing this desired result. For a given set of conditions surrounding the flow of oil into a particular well, in which the viscosity of the oil, the porosity and grain size of the sand, and the diameter of the well appear as constants, two variables determine the quantity of oil that will flow from the sand into the well. These are: the effective pressure behind or within the oil in the reservoir sand, and the fluid level maintained within the well. The former is the expulsive force that causes movement of oil from the sand into the well, while the latter determines the magnitude of a resisting force opposing such movement. The first of these factors is largely beyond the control of the oil producer, but it is in his interest to reduce the opposing force to the lowest economic limit.
