The Marquette range, on which are situated the iron mines of Mar-quette County, together with a few in Baraga County, Mich., extends from a point 10 miles southwest of Marquette westward for 30 miles. The tracts are usually a multiple of the standard 40-acre parcel, which is the smallest government subdivision of a square mile or section. About half of the mines are held in fee, these being owned by the older mining companies. Some of them date back to about 1880, and a few are as early as 1850. During the past 40 years most of the mines opened have been on leased lands, the royalty being either for a stated amount per ton or a percentage of the selling price of the ore at the lower lake ports, or the selling price on board of cars at the mine. The first merchantable body of ore discovered in the Lake Superior district was found, in 1845, at what is known as the Jackson mine, near Negaunee. This ore was hard hematite. After unprofitable attempts had been made, in 1848, to smelt it in forges, shipments were begun to lower lake ports, which increased rapidly upon the completion of the locks at Sault Ste. Marie, in 1855, and the railroad from the mines to Marquette, in 1857. Beginning with the Pioneer, in 1858, a number of small charcoal furnaces were built to smelt a part of the product. At various points in the upper and lower peninsulas, large charcoal furnaces are still making iron from the ores of the Marquette range. In connection with these furnaces are byproduct plants. As the deposits were opened up, soft ore was encountered, but for a few years this was disregaided, as only the hard ore was used. Underground mining was begun about 1880 and during the next few years the open-pit mines producing high-grade ore were exhausted. The first mines in the district were owned by the Jackson, Cleveland, Lake Superior, Lake Angeline, Champion, Iron Cliffs, Humboldt, Republic, and Michigamme companies. Many of these companies have been merged in the holdings of The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co., which controls most of the tonnage of the district.

This paper relates geostatistical doctrine to classical statistical and mathematical concepts. It is not a contribution to geostatistics; it is a contribution about geostatistics. It uses descriptive and pictorial arguments to assist interested readers in forming an intuitive grasp of the recondite and difficult mathematical issues involved. The method chosen is to cite authoritative literature references from the two fields and trace connections between them. Four broad conclusions appear: first, geostatistics comprises a relabelled subset of concepts detached from classical statistics and mathematics; second, this relabelling artificially isolates geostatistics from the classical fields and restricts its scope; third, the classical fields still have much to offer to the mining industry but will remain fallow unless artifcial communication barriers are removed; and fourth, the unique advantages asserted for geostatistics are neither unique nor necessarily real. These findings should not be regarded as iconoclastic but rather as Pointing the way to a wider and more productive scope for those who evaluate mineral deposits.

Although thousands of tons of stainless steel have been used successfully for many types of equipment, there have been few cases of failures due to the phenomenon described as stress corrosion cracking. During the past seven years only six cases of such failures have been drawn to our attention and investigated in the Research Laboratories with which the author is associated. These failures oc¬curred in two coffee urns, two wool con¬ditioning units, one dyeing machine, and another in a part of a steam-jacketed stock pot. In each case the equipment failed in a comparatively short time after exposure to conditions of high humidity at tempera¬tures in the range of 100 to 200 F. The failures in all cases were characterized by general embrittlement and cracking of the stainless steel, with only slight indications of general corrosion except at the cracks. The first failure of this type was a coffee urn returned for investigation in 1937. The top and bottom sections showed a general corrosive attack and embrittlement and cracking of the stainless steel. The chemical analyses of these sections were as follows:

Numerous results and formulas have been published for analyzing seismic records, but most of them apply only to large-scale phenomena such as are encountered in studying earthquakes. In a few cases,' formulas have been published for some of the simpler structures. In the present paper, an attempt will be made to analyze several types of structures without using methods more advanced than those of a first course in calculus. In tracing a disturbance through a medium, it is almost always possible to base the analysis on Fermat's Principle of Extreme Time, which states that waves of displacement travel between points in such a manner as to make the time of travel an extremum with respect to all neighboring paths. In the simpler cases, comprising most of those used in optics or geophysical prospecting, this time is a minimum and the principle is often referred to as the Principle of Least Time. Within a homogeneous medium, having a uniform speed of transmission of the disturbance in all directions and throughout the medium, the paths are straight and are refracted at the interfaces in accordance with the Snell law of refraction, which states that the ratio of the sine of the angle, made by the ray with the normal to the interface, to the speed of transmission is the same on both sides of the interface. Thus, in any medium composed of homogeneous sections, this same ratio has a constant value at all points. In particular, if all interfaces are horizontal, it is apparent that the angles of incidence are the angles made by the ray with the vertical direction. Furthermore, the incident ray, the refracted ray and the normal to the interface are all in the same plane at each refraction,

In recent papers, O'Neill,' Vivian, and Zener and Hollomon3 have reviewed some of the information concerning the relations between stress and strain during plastic deformation. Since further information has been obtained since these reviews were published, this paper attempts to further coordinate and amplify the knowledge concerning the plastic deformation of metals in simple tension. Ordinarily the results of tensile tests of metals are presented as graphs in which the load divided by the original area is plotted as a function of the percentage of elongation measured over some specified gauge length. The interpretation of graphs of this sort is limited, since the stress required to deform the metal at any stage of the deformation is actually the load divided by the instantaneous rather than the original area. Furthermore, each increment of the deformation is performed on metal that has been previously deformed, and, as pointed out by Ludwik,4 the strain could be more effectively defined: where e is the strain and AO and A are, respectively, the original and instantaneous areas. The results of the tensile tests can be more effectively presented and interpreted if the stress* (load divided by actual area) is .lotted as a function of the strain as defined above. A schematic curve of this type is presented as Fig. I. In a previous paper,6 the concept of Ludwik7 concerning the flow and fracture of metals was successfully employed to explain some of the puzzling results of notched-bar impact tests of steel. It appears that the use of this concept ii; very fruitful and should be kept in mind in any study of the deformation charactcristics of metals. Ludwik considered that a flow stress-strain curve of a metal was essentially a locus of points that described the stress required for plastic flow of an infinite numbcr of specimens, each with a different strain history determined by the preceding part of the flow curve Each of these specimens can also be considered to have a fracture strength. Uniortunately (or fortunately depending upon the point of view), all the specimens, except the one deformed to the fracture strain, flow and do not fracture. Washington Camp, in Santa Cruz county, Arizona, is a small and little-known mining-district situated on the lower, eastern slope of the Patagonia mountains, about 20 miles east of Nogales and a like distance south of Patagonia Station on the Sonora railroad, which connects at Benson, 83 miles from Nogales, with the main line of the Southern Pacific. This district is also about 4 miles north of the international boundary, 35 miles west of Bisbee and 40 miles north of Cananea, in Sonora. The topography of the district, which lies at a general elevation of 5,500 ft. above the sea, is only very moderately rugged, and presents no obstacles to mining-operations. Although some of the claims of the camp, including the Pride of the West,, Belmont and Holland, were extensively worked for silver 25 years ago, they passed, at moderate depths, as in so many other districts, out of the argentiferous lead carbonate and sulphide, into zinc, copper and iron sulphides ; and for two decades the camp was abandoned and almost forgotten. In recent years, however, its apparent possibilities as a copper-producer have led to a revival of mining-activity; but not, as yet, with conspicuous success. Although economically relatively unimportant, the deposits of Washington Camp are, mineralogically and structurally, nevertheless, typical examples of ore-bodies developed in connection with the garnet ledge now recognized as a normal feature of granite-limestone contacts; and, in the opinion of the writer, this is an instance where a minor example is yet essentially normal and capable of throwing important light upon the origin and genetic relations of the type.

BLOCK CAVING HAS BEEN DEVELOPED to a high degree of efficiency in the last two decades and more particularly since World War II. At the Jeffrey mine of Canadian Johns-Manville Co., in the Eastern Townships of Quebec, several innovations have increased production and decreased costs. Asbestos ore is produced at the rate of 10,000 tpd from an underground operation supplemented by a large open pit that has been mined since 1881. The orebody consists of asbestos veins in a fractured and serpentinized peridotite. Hardness and structural strength of rock vary from soft shear zones at one extreme to a small amount of hard granitic inclusions at the other. In general the ore is weak and deteriorates on exposure to air, so that it is difficult to maintain underground openings for any period of time. Permanent workings are lined with concrete and temporary ones are driven mini- mum size and supported with steel sets as required.

Continuous and accurate analysis of slurries has become a critical requirement in mineral processing. With on-stream assay data, automation procedures can be employed to obtain higher recovery and improved control of production. The Courier system was developed by Outokumpu Oy, taking advantage of mineral processing know-how, to provide means for achieving these objectives in the company's ore concentrator operations. It became evident, based on early experience with on-stream analysis, that the Courier should be a complete system to fulfill all functions of the analysis operation. The system includes equipment and techniques for primary sampling, sample preparation for assaying, and processing of data for final assay results. In addition, the on-line X-ray spectrometer unit was developed specifically for industrial use, incorporating a number of technical advances. A new system for converting spectrometric data to assays is based on a physical model programmed on a digital computer. The Courier system is furnished on a turn-key installation basis incorporating all elements needed for operation including calibration. The experience to date with the Courier system at the Pyhäsalmi concentrator is summarized. Reference is also made to recent results with installations at the Outokumpu and Vihanti concentrators.

THE purpose of pulverizing coal before burning it is to make available every heat unit it contains. Machinery has been developed which will pulverize coal in one operation, delivering it to bins in front of the furnaces at an expenditure of about 17 hp.-hr. per ton, in a medium-sized plant. The cost of the operation depends upon the amount of moisture that must be expelled before pulverizing, the cost of labor, and the cost of coal delivered at the plant. At a small plant, requiring a pulverizer with a capacity of only ½ ton per hour, the cost per ton pulverized will naturally be greater than at a plant requiring the largest pulverizer, with a capacity of 7 tons per hour. The first step is to reduce large lumps to a size suitable for drying uniformly, before passing to the pulverizing mills; this is done in rolls, at a single pass. The second -step is the elimination of moisture, in order to facilitate pulverizing to great fineness, while also increasing the heating effect and the temperature attainable when the coal is burned. There are other mechanical advantages in the handling of, dried coal. Driers are now manufactured which are able to eliminate moisture without distilling any of the volatile combustible matter in the coal; they are fired by hand or with pulverized fuel. The heat first surrounds the shell of the drier, being confined within a chamber where complete combustion takes place; the heated gases are then led through a duct to the discharge end of the drier and enter the inside of the shell at a temperature not exceeding 300° F. This temperature is maintained by the operator and is indicated by a pyrometer. Volatile combustible matter is not likely to be distilled until the temperature rises above 400° F. On discharging from the drier, the coal is usually passed over a magnetic separator in order to prevent pieces of iron from going to the pulverizer. Two types are used: a magnetic pulley which automatically discharges its collection of iron, and a lifting type, from which the iron is removed by hand when convenient.

The solubilities of a series of experimental alloys covering the range 0 to 100 per cent. Ni, 0 to 30 per cent. Cr have been studied under conditions of complete submersion in several fully aerated acid solutions, and in solutions containing sulfurous acid. In nonoxidizing, hydrogen-discharging acids, if the nickel content is below a certain critical amount, chromium increases the rate of solution and nickel decreases this rate; this critical content of nickel is about 13 per cent. Alloys containing more than this corrode at a constant minimum rate independent of iron, nickel or chromium contents. Austenitic chrome-nickel steels may thus have a resistance to these acids equal to that of nickel-chromium alloys. In nitric acid and in unaerated sulfurous acid rather sharp limits of attack occur which are principally dependent on chromium content. In the former the limit of attack is not related to a particular chromium content but varies continuously with acid concentration. The action of sulfurous acid on these alloys is highly dependent on the presence of small amounts of other substances in solution, and many sulfurous acid mixtures rapidly attack alloys to which the pure acid is wholly inert. The observed effects are not compatible with Tammann's theory relating corrosion resistance to lattice structure but are believed to be concordant with current views of the electrochemical nature of corrosion. Introduction The discovery, development and engineering application of iron alloys resistant to corrosion may well claim a place among the important developments in metallurgy of the past two decades. The varied demands of industry coupled with the skill of the metallurgist have resulted in the production of an extensive group of steels and alloys ranging from the now familiar "stainless " chromium steels of the kitchen to special alloys of great chemical complexity for particular, exacting needs. Any adequate description of the important properties of these-— physical, chemical and economic—would be a formidable undertaking.

Plating iron with copper has received great attention from practical and scientific men, but, aside from the deposit secured by immersion of iron in copper salts, by electro-plating, or by welding together thin sheets of iron and copper, these efforts have met with no success. Failure of these efforts, in the production of copper plating, has been due to the fact that the conditions normally and necessarily present in the plating operation are antagonistic to the production of copper-plated iron. In most, if not quite all of them, a bath of molten copper has been used. The temperature of a molten copper bath is so high that the iron becomes oxidized before it can be immersed in the molten copper, and unless a protective flux for the molten copper is used, the surface of the copper will become oxidized, and, in any event, the plated iron will oxidize immediately on its being withdrawn from the molten bath. I recently had the pleasure of visiting the works of The Metals Plating Co. at Elizabeth, N. J., where I witnessed the plating of iron sheets with copper by a new process.l The plating metal is applied to the sheet in the form of a liquid mixture by means of rolls, such as inking rolls. The sheet, after being coated with the mixture, is automatically carried forward and deposited on a link-belt conveyor, which carries it through a furnace maintained at a temperature well above that of molten copper. The basic principle involved in this method lies in the application of the plating metal to the sheet while the sheet is cold and then melting the metal in place on the sheet under conditions which are favorable to the formation of the plating. Plating Mixture The liquid plating mixture is composed of either copper oxide or finely divided copper, or a mixture of both, ground to the consistency of a light varnish in a crude oil having an asphaltic base, of a specific gravity of from 14" to 16' Be. HYDROGEN embrittlement of steels has recently attracted much attention because it is asso- ciated with a variety of failures, especially those of aircraft structural components.' For instance, one of the undesirable properties of the ultra-high strength steels used for landing gears is their pronounced susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement during plating. The presence of hydrogen in these steels becomes particularly apparent through delayed or sustained load failures of parts which have been subjected to low loads for an extended time. THE essential differences expressed by the different speakers participating in this symposium concern merely the relative emphasis placed on the subjects that are commonly included under the term "geophysics" and the branches of science that form the basis for investigations in this field. In order to appreciate the present situation it may be profitable to briefly refer to a few historical matters. One can find almost countless descriptions of geological phenomena long antedating the introduction of the title of "geology," which has been credited to Richard de Bury in the fourteenth century. Interpretations, when they were offered, were generally pure speculation. Only toward the close of the eighteenth century do we find theories developed as the result of observations and tested by additional observations. It is difficult to select and give proper credit to the individual who was particularly responsible for turning geology into a distinctly observational science. William Smith, who has been called the "Father of English Geology," certainly represents the period when observation was the only method used. As he traveled through the British Isles, "sometimes 10,000 miles in a year," he was continually making notes of his observations. Geikie says: "His plain, solid, matter of fact intellect never branched into theory or speculation, but occupied itself wholly in the observation of facts." William Smith, with others of his time, definitely laid firmly the foundations on which modern geology has been built. Field and laboratory observations can no longer be said to constitute the sole basis for geologic contributions but we have not laid aside the methods of Smith and his followers. It is folly to underestimate the fundamental value of the observational part of geology in the present. The objection to purely observational geology is that it is mainly qualitative and not quantitative, general and not specific. No one can deny this charge and probably there are few who do not welcome every method or process whereby we can put aside generalities for definite established values. Physics is the science that has particularly come to the aid of the geologist in this respect. CONTRIBUTIONS OF PHYSICS It is not the intent of the writer to enumerate or to evaluate all of the contributions to geologic advance in the field of physics. A few only are used for the purpose of illustration. When Clarence King, Director of the United States Geological Exploration of the Fortieth Parallel, invited Ferdinand Zirkel to study 2500 thin sections of rocks collected from the western United States, the use of the microscope came into general use. Zirkel's report was published in 1876. He was not the first to use transmitted light for microscopic rock determination, some work having been done by Henry Clifton Sorby and others some years earlier, but he was the first to put into general use this method. It seems proper, before describing the plant which has been erected in Rome, N. Y., for the purpose of demonstrating the practicability of my process of refining and desilverizing lead by electrolysis, to state in a few words the principles that govern the process. They are well known to those who have studied electrical science, and to the practical electro-platers of the country, and are briefly these: If we take a plate, or other form, of metal (impure lead in this case), and immerse it in a bath consisting of a solution of the main metal (that which contains the impurities), and also immerse another plate, which shall be a conductor of electricity, in the bath, but separated from the first by the solution, and connect the former plate with the positive pole of the source of electricity, and the other plate with the negative pole, an action will go on in this bath which is called electrolysis. There is first a decomposition of the solution constituting the bath ; then a solution of the metal at the positive pole (called the anode), and a deposition upon the other plate connected with the negative pole. which plate is technically called the cathode. If the bath is properly constituted, and the current of electricity which is passed through the bath is of the proper strength and electro-motive force, the dissolution of the anode and the deposition of the metal upon the cathode will be exactly equivalent. The analysis and synthesis are opposite and equal. If, on the other hand, this solution (called an electrolyte) be not properly constituted, decomposition will go on, but there will be these effects: a superoxidation at the anode and a liberation of free hydrogen at the cathode, which free hydrogen escapes finally in bubbles through the liquid to the surface, and into the atmosphere. These mines were discovered by George W. Lufkin in August, 1878, and mere worked almost continuously until August, 1893, a period of fifteen years. The ore-deposits in this locality lie close to the surface, and it is strange that the Spaniards, passing and repassing for nearly three centuries, did not discover them, particularly as they are marked in several places by large outcrops of black flint and iron, which would lead even a casual observer in a mineral country to suspect the proximity of ore. The mines are situated about six miles from the old Santa Fé trail, and fifteen miles from the Rio Grande. The geology is such that a skilled geologist passing over the ground would probably suspect, from the peculiar arrangement of the formations, the occurrence of ore. The formations in the district, eruptive and sedimentary, are nine in number; and of these eight are to be found within one thousand feet of the Grande workings. Topography. The year 1936 in Illinois was marked by considerably increased activity in drilling, both wildcat and proved territory, in leasing, and in seismic and geologic exploration. Of the 92 oil and gas wells completed during 1936 in Illinois, 49 were oil wells, 3 were gas wells and 40 were dry holes. This compares with but 34 completions in 1935. The total of the daily initial productions of the new oil wells was 1755 bbl., or an average of 36 bbl. per well. One new field was discovered, the Bartelso field in Clinton County. The leasing of some large blocks of acreage in Clay, Marion, and other counties by the Carter Oil Co. in the late fall of 1935 was followed in 1936 by extensive leasing in southern Illinois by 10 major companies and many smaller companies and individuals. It is estimated that 2½ million acres were under lease by the end of 1936. Seismograph surveying has been carried on by about seven companies, and the number of seismograph parties operating in Illinois has varied from six to eight throughout most of 1936. It is estimated that approximately two million dollars has been spent in the state in seismic and geologic exploration and in leasing during the last quarter of 1935 and all of 1936. Centrally located with relation to the largest iron- and steel-producing districts of the United States, the fluorspar-deposits of Kentucky possess increasing interest and importance. As typical of the numerous fluorspar-mines of Kentucky and Illinois, I have selected for description the Memphis, because it and others of its immediate group exhibit the conditions characteristic of all. I. The Memphis MiNe. This mine lies 5 miles NW. of Marion, in Crittenden county, Kentucky, a station on the Chicago and Nashville division of .the Illinois Central R. R. For the first mile and a half out of Marion we see only Birdsville or Middle Chester sandstones of Mississippian age. Then we cross a fault of about 850 ft. displacement, and the Ste. Genevieve oolite sets in. Beyond the fault, oolite is the predominant rock, except that the hills to the north have a capping of Cypress or lowest Chester sandstone, 80 ft. below which is an outcrop of from 6 to 10 ft. of Ste. Genevieve (Rosiclare) sandstone. Occasional sink-holes are noticed, and as the mines are approached evidence of faulting is again seen. A line of .crude head-frames and open-cut dumps, extending for more than a quarter of a mile, marks the Klondike vein. The open-cuts are from 15 to 20 ft. deep, and in most of them, from the surface down, was found the reddish gravel which is really fluorspar—some of it white or purple and crystal-clear (if the red clay is washed off), and some carrying iron and silica, and stained by waters from the decaying limestone walls. In one of these cuts, at a depth of 20 ft., white and purplish honey-combed fluorspar was found, in which the larger cavities are due to the leaching of limestone and calcite, and the minute ones to the leaching of zinc-hlende.

The various objectives of dredging at sea require different methods and radically different equipment for their optimum fulfillment. In the majority of cases, sea dredging is done by means of dredging equipment connected to a pontoon or ship floating at the surface. As the supporting hull is subject to the influence of waves, swells, currents and wind, the connecting point of the dredging equipment to the hull will generally move relative to the sea bottom with 6° of freedom. The more important hull motions are surge, heave, pitch and roll. Depending on the actual sea and weather conditions and the size of the hull, some of these motions can be so large that dredging equipment of rigid construction (normal or inland dredges) cannot be used. In those cases where mechanical disintegration of the bottom is necessary and where accurate dredging is required, the designer must find a solution for this problem. For cases where the bottom consists of soils that can be handled by plain suction, highly sophisticated dredging equipment such as the trailing suction hopper dredge permit dredging under all but the most severe sea state conditions. This type of dredge picks up the soil from the sea bottom while slowly underway. The drag suction head is fitted on a suction pipe of such flexibility that the supporting ship can carry out all six movements in relation to the draghead (heave, pitch, roll, sway, yaw and surge), while the draghead remains in firm contact with the bottom. The suction pipe is fitted with flexible hoses, a universal hinge, a horizontal hinge, axial turning gland and sliding turning gland with horizontal axis and is suspended flexibly from the ship incorporating swell compensating buffer gear, keeping the wires taut and the draghead bottom contact pressure fairly constant while the dredge moves up and down. Due to the fact that the draghead has a low bottom contact pressure and has little tendency to sink into the bottom, this compensation is not difficult to realize.
