The winning of zinc and lead ores from the comparatively shallow deposits of the Joplin district presents few such problems for the mining engineer as are encountered in deep ore mining and in the handling of complex ores. However, for those who are interested in the origin and nature of ore deposits in general, there is much here to investigate, and upon studies in this direction will depend, in no small measure, the future of an industry that has produced during the year 1916, in southwest Missouri, lead and zinc ores to the value of $26,319,383; adding $46,022,164 to the metallic wealth of the nation. Including the adjacent mines in Ottawa County, Oklahoma, and Cherokee County, Kansas, which are really continuations of the Joplin district, the total value of ores produced reached the sum of $34,089,503, and that of the metals, $58,927,941.l The ores produced in the Joplin district are remarkable on account of their almost uniformly high metal content in both lead and zinc. Their superiority in this regard is unparalleled, and is doubtless due to certain geological conditions that are now possibly explicable, provided that the artesian circulation = ascension hypothesis of the origin of the ore deposits is proved beyond question to be the only tenable explanation of the facts. These, as well as other valuable zinc-ore deposits, are bound to be exhausted in time, for ordinary mining purposes, and it concerns the mining engineer that the conditions under which ores of this character were actually deposited in the form in which they occur, may, if possible, be ascertained, in order that he may learn where to look for similar deposits in other regions, or even how to reproduce artificially such condi-

The rate of reaction of hydrogen sulfide with ferrous sulfide was studied by measuring the initial rates of sulfidation of iron strips in hydrogen sulfide-hydrogen-argon mixtures at 670°, 800°, and 900" C. The time-dependent surface sulfur activity is derived from the instantaneous rate of sulfidation with the assumption that diffusion in the sulfide layer is in a pseudo-steady state with the gas-sulfide chemical reaction. The rate of sulfur transfer from hydrogen sulfide to the surface of iron sulfide is proportional to the partial pressure of hydrogen sulfide and inversely proportional to the activity of sulfur at the surface of the sulfide layer. The derived rate equation is based on the assumption that most of the surface sites on the chemisorbed layer of iron sulfide are occupied by sulfur atoms and that the slow rate-controlling reaction is the dissociation of hydrogen sulfide on the chemisorbed layer. The experimental results are in reasonable accord with this reaction model. 1 HE slow approach to parabolic growth rate in the sulfidation of iron in hydrogen sulfide-hydrogen mixtures is a manifestation of slow approach to surface equilibrium between the gas and the surface of the sulfide layer. For example, at 800°C and Fig. 7 in Part I, the parabolic growth rate begins after approximately 1 day of sulfidation time. With decreasing temperature and decreasing partial pressure of hydrogen sulfide, the time necessary to reach gas-sulfide surface equilibrium is much longer. These observations are similar to those reported previously by Turkdogan et al.' on the oxidation of iron to wustite in hydrogen-water vapor mixtures. The slow approach to gas-sulfide equilibrium is well-demonstrated by the results in Fig. 1 where the square of the weight gain per unit area, ( g S per sq cmI2, is plotted against time for gas mixtures having PH g//>H = 1.0 with 0, 25, 50, and 67 pct Ar at 800°C. The value of 1.5 X lo-' (g S per sq cm)' corresponds to almost complete sulfidation of the iron strip (- 0.05 cm thick) to iron sulfide. The points fall on S-shaped curves. If the inflection parts of the curves are considered to be linear, thus indicating parabolic growth rate and the establishment of gas-sulfide equilibrium, their slopes would have to be the same for a fixed ratio in the gas mixture. Such is not the case, and the slopes for the "linear" parts of the S-shaped curves are lower than the value when gas-sulfide surface equilibrium is established. The subject matter of this paper is the kinetics of the surface reaction of hydrogen sulfide with iron sulfide during the early stages of sulfidation of an iron strip. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS The apparatus and materials used were the same as those discussed in Part I. In the present experiments of relatively short duration, a purified iron strip, 5 by 2 by 0.05 cm, which was suspended in the uniform hot zone of a vertical zircon tube, reacted with a flowing gas mixture of hydrogen sulfide-hydrogen-argon. The sample was suspended from a gold chain attached to a calibrated silica spring. The amount of sulfur picked up by the iron, which formed a layer of iron sulfide, was determined by measuring the displacement of a reference point on the silica spring, using a cathetom-eter. In all cases, the degreased sample was first annealed in a stream of oxygen-free dry hydrogen for several hours to remove any impurities such as oxygen, nitrogen, or carbon which might have been present on the surface of the sample.' The rate measurements were carried out at 670°, 800°, and 900° C in hydrogen sulfide-hydrogen-argon mixtures with pH2 s/Ph2 ratios from 4 to 0.1. In a few experiments of short duration no sulfur deposition was observed in gas mixtures with (comments concerning sulfur deposition at high pH s/ph ratios were made in Part I.) Typical examples of the results obtained are shown in Fig. 2 for two temperatures and two gas compositions. IN recent years much attention has been given to high-melting alloy systems, It has been of interest in this respect to investigate the alloys of platinum and tungsten, which were known from the literature to have very high melting points up to about 50 pct tungsten, but about which little had been published on the high-tungsten side of the system. Powder metallurgical methods were used throughout this investigation for the preparation of the alloys, utilizing electrical sintering techniques such as are used for tungsten and molybdenum. In the course of the work it was found desirable to determine fusion temperatures of the alloys, and it was possible from these and other data to draw a tentative constitutional diagram (solidus, mostly) applicable to the high-temperature part of the system. No attempt was made to determine solid solubility vs. temperature data, nor to investigate the lower temperature transformations in the solid state. Data on the microstructure, hardness, and a note on oxidation resistance of the sintered alloys were obtained. PAST WORK Müller1 determined liquidus temperatures of platinum-rich alloys to 50 pct tungsten, using a radiation method employing a photoelectric cell, and found that the melting points increased progressively from 1771°C for platinum to 2350°C for the 50 pct alloy. Microscopic evidence by Müller that complete solid solutions exist to 50 pct tungsten was not checked by Kremer2 who, according to Vines and Wise,3 found that "although the 8 pct tungsten alloy was a solid solution, the 26 pct tungsten alloy contained a eutectic or an intermediate phase." Hultgren and jaffee4 using X ray methods found continuous solid solutions to at least 33.6 pct tungsten (35 at. pct) after annealing in vacuum for 6 days at 1000°C. Vines and Wise3 report work communicated to them by E. C. Rhodes on wrought alloys to 7 pct tungsten, which showed that tungsten hardened platinum extremely rapidly, and was one of the most potent hardeners of the binary additions to platinum. Considerable quantities of 4 pct tungsten platinum wire have been produced for grids in radar tubes and for aircraft spark plugs. Some of the alloy for the latter application is made by sintering, the remainder by smelting and casting. MATERIALS The platinum powder used in this work was kindly supplied by the research and Development Laboratory of the Owens-Corning Fiberglas Corp., Newark, Ohio, It was prepared from scrap platinum. After dissolving in aqua regia and evaporating almost to dryness, the solution was worked up several times with concentrated HCI. the resultant platinic chloride was diluted considerably, and metallic zinc was added, which precipitated the platinum in a very finely divided form. The Henderson Mine started production in 1976 utilizing a unique, push-pull, mine ventilation plan. As the mine expands in size, the mine ventilation requirements will increase and a more comprehensive system for maintaining ventilation will be needed. A computer simulation study was completed and has resulted in a revised, systematic, mine ventilation plan which is being implemented as mine development proceeds. Based on the computer simulation study, the new ventilation plan takes into account mining of the orebody simultaneously from both the 8100 and 7700 production levels. Present experience and empirical data indicate that volumes of air needed to adequately ventilate both production levels cannot be obtained utilizing the existing mine layout. The total volume of air needed for the mine excluding haulage tunnel will increase from 708 m3/s (1 500 000 cfm) to 1652 m3/s (3 500 000 cfm), thus a new No. 5 exhaust shaft and connecting drifts are being developed to expand the mine ventilation system to service both production levels. The original ventilation plan for the 7500 haulage level was to bring air from the No. 2 and No. 3 intake shafts and exhaust it through the 94X raise to the 8035 exhaust level and then through the No. 1 exhaust shaft to surface. Control of air volumes in loading drifts was initially planned to be achieved by air doors and air curtains. Air doors on the 7500 level require large cutouts, expensive installations and constant maintenance. The computer simulation study indicates that air- flow in the 7500-level production drifts can be con- trolled exclusively by air curtains which are less expensive to install and more effective in regulating airflows than air doors. Air from the 7500 level can be exhausted through a new raise to the new 7635 exhaust level and then through the new No. 5 exhaust shaft.

AS a rule the thoughts of engineers are more often directed toward the mechanical and physical conditions of mining practice than they are toward the disposition and the marketing of the product. This, I think, has been true of the coal industry to the present time not only among the engineering force but also generally true of operators. There has been a tendency to place the sales department in a rather secondary position; for a great many years there was a greater demand for coal than the supply would meet, so it was only necessary to increase production: either by expansion of operating mines, or opening new mines of greater capacity. While the production of coal is still a highly important phase of the industry, its enormous development throughout the country, the great advance in fuel, efficiency and economy, and the discovery of new reserves of competitive fuels have combined to create a buyers' market and force the present-day attention upon merchandising in modern ways. A buyers' market has a natural tendency to develop the keenest competition, frequently unscrupulous and nearly always profit-wrecking. Under such conditions bad practices are bound to grow and to extend until the industry is wrecked, or until wiser heads get together to reduce or eliminate unfair methods of competition. This is not so recent a condition as one might believe.

THE 130th Meeting of the Institute was held in Birmingham on Oct. 13 to 15, with visits to other mines and districts before and after. The last visit of the Institute to Birmingham was made in 1888, thirty-six years ago, and vast development has been made in' the district since then. With proverbial southern hospitality compounding over this period of years the welcome given to the Institute was such that .it is difficult to express properly the gratification and appreciation of the visiting members and the officers of the Institute. The Birmingham News in an editorial said: Birmingham is duly appreciative of the presence of these gentlemen, not because they are all distinguished in their great services in the mining and metallurgical world, but for the further reason that our interests are very largely wrapped up in their deliberations. Birmingham is one of the great industrial centers of America. Their discussions are of vital concern to all of us.

TWENTY-ONE of the states in the Union, the Territory of Hawaii, and seven provinces of Canada now have in operation laws requiring that professional engineers be registered or licensed. In addition, two states require that civil engineers be registered, and one other state demands registration of structural engineers. Moreover, nearly every year sees additions made to the list. The registration movement, fostered by the American Association of Engineers, now has the powerful, energetic backing of the An1,erican Society of Civil Engineers, which is itself now fostering registration legislation, and there is a strong sentiment in favor of registration in the American Institute of Electrical Engineers and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Only in the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers is anti-registration sentiment, strongly dominant, but many members of this organization are enthusiastic advocates of registration.

TO certain people the name of Northern Rhodesia brings only a vague recollection of a distant country somewhere in Africa; to others, it means a big game territory and the opportunity for excellent shooting; to some, a land of sunshine and peace; but to mining men the name signifies the land where the latest discoveries of copper ore are astonishing the mining world and bid fair, in a few years, to make Northern Rhodesia one of the largest copper- producing countries. There is a fascination about this part of the globe that is somewhat similar to southern California, and at the same time there is that feeling of mystery peculiar to a tropical climate. Perhaps it is the isolation, the fear of wild animals, or the influence of an undefinable something which cannot be expressed.

Craig (University of Toronto, Toronto, O,nt., Canada)—The advent of pyramidal slip at room temperatures in a magnesium crystal (M2,) and the very low value reported for the critical shear stress are puzzling. Table I1 shows the calculated values (approximate) for sin x cos I in this specimen if all the (10l) planes are considered. If So is the shear stress resolved in the direction of glide, on the glide plane, and U, is the stress operative in yield point tests, then: S,, — 325 (0.169) 55gpersqmm (approximately) for 1101: S,, = 325 (0.465) = 151 gpersqmm (approximately) for (0001): S,, — 325 (0.101) - 32.8 gpersqmm (approximately) Thus, we see the pyramidal plane in which the minimum shearing component operated. Barrett"' stated: "Experiments have repeatedly shown that, when there are several crystallographically equivalent slip systems in a crystal, the one having the greatest resolved shear stress will become active. ..." It does not appear to me that the measurements given are conclusive proof that pyramidal slip operated. E. C. Burke and W. R. Hibbard, Jr. (authors' reply) —Although the low value for the critical resolved shear stress for pyramidal slip may be puzzling, there does not appear to be any basis for questioning the validity of the measurements. Under the influence of constraints, slip systems having decidedly lower shearing components may become operative, e.g., "cross-slip" or the "forced glide" in magnesium reported by Bakarian. Since we believe that pyramidal slip occurred in the specimen because basal slip was inhibited, it is not too surprising to find an operative plane with a lower shear stress. -7 C. S. As a result of using copper-containing scrap in the steelmaking process, the copper content of steels has been steadily increasing for years. Consequently the possible role copper may play in the steelmaking process and in the finished product begins to attract the metallurgists' attention. Some time ago one of the present authors forwarded the idea—based on the results of the analysis of nonmetallic inclusions extracted electrolytically from steels—that sulphur in plain carbon steels is distributed mainly between copper and manganese, the amount of iron sulphide being very small; and that, consequently, the problem of copper and that of sulphur in steel cannot be treated separately.' At the time of the publication of the quoted paper little was known about the relative affinities of copper and manganese for sulphur at high temperatures except that at moderate temperatures (below 1000°C) the affinity of manganese for sulphur is much greater. To gather more experimental data on this subject, the present authors undertook the investigation of the equilibrium constants of the reactions: 2Mn(8 or 1) + S2(g) = 2MnS(s) 4Cu(s or 1) + S2(g) = 2Cu2S (S or I)* 2Fe(s) + S2(g) = 2FeS (s or 1) over a range of temperatures wide enough to establish the dependence of these equilibrium constants on temperature. From the equilibrium constants (K = l/Ps2) the free energy of formation (affinity) can be calculated from F° = -RTln 1/PSt (1) where the standard conditions chosen are: 1 atm of sulphur pressure and the activities of condensed components equal one. The decomposition pressure, Ps2, of sulphur over the respective sulphides is too small to be measured directly, but there is a way of eliminating this difficulty by measuring the equilibrium constant of the reaction between the sulphide and hydrogen. From the latter and from the equilibrium constant of the thermal dissociation of H2S we then calculate Ps2 for the respective sulphide. 2Mn + 2H2S = 2MnS + 2H, 2H2 + S2 = 2H2S_________ 2Mn + S2 = 2MnS The numerical values of the equilibrium constant of the thermal dissociation of H2S at different temperatures were taken from Kelley's paper, "The Thermodynamic Properties of Sulfur and its Inorganic Compounds."² In previous experimental work published by Jellinek and Zakowski3 and by Britzke and Kapustinsky4 the equilibrium constants of the reactions Metal sulphide + H2 = H2S + metal were determined by passing hydrogen, at different rates of flow, over the sulphide, analyzing the resulting H2S + H2 mixture and then extrapolating the H2S/H2 ratio (which is a function of the rate of flow) to the zero speed of flow, a method necessarily involving considerable uncertainty. In the present work the equilibrium ratio was actually measured instead of being extrapolated. The apparatus is shown in Fig 1. Experimental Procedure The sulphides were prepared by the following methods: FeS Powdered iron which had been reduced with hydrogen (ferrum reduc-tum) was mixed in stoichiometric ratio with sublimed sulphur and carefully ground. The mixture was put into an alundum crucible, covered with pure sulphur, and the reaction started by touching the mixture with a glowing iron rod. After the reaction was completed the product (still containing some metallic iron) was again ground with sulphur, put into a Rose crucible, covered with sulphur, and heated in a strong current of pure hydrogen. Analysis of the final product showed 62.46 pct Fe and 36.59 pct S. Theoretical for FeS: 63.53 pct Fe and 36.47 pct S. MnS Manganese sulphide (precipitated and carefully washed with distilled water containing H2S) was dried in a Rose crucible in an atmosphere of H2S and heated in a current of hydrogen for 2 hr at red heat. The product was then ground and ignited for several hours at 1000°C in a current of hydrogen sulphide. Analysis showed 64.53 pct Mn and 36.63 pct S. Theoretical: 63.15 pct Mn and 36.85 pct S. Some MnS samples were prepared from metallic manganese and sublimed sulphur by mixing and grinding them and then heating in a current of hydrogen sulphide in an alundum tube.

As cold working is an important feature in a great many of the fabricating processes now applied, this paper presents some ideas on the nature and results of the plastic deformation produced in this operation. The art of manufacturing metal for practical uses is very old and has undergone very great development. The science of metals has- also developed very rapidly recently and the various processes to which metals are submitted are much better understood now than they were even a short time ago. All the knowledge that can be obtained on this subject is useful because it promotes efficiency in converting metal into finished articles.

Confirmation of the relationship noted above was provided by fitting experimental stress-strain data5 for 304 stainless steel (total strain from 0.072 to 1.15) at room temperature at a true total strain rate of 4 x 10-3 sec-1 to Eqs. [I] and [3]. In this study nonlinear regression analyses were used to evaluate the equation constants. The results of this evaluation are presented in Table I. When these constants are used in Eqs. [I] and [3] the curves obtained are coincident. It will also be noted that the value of n is equal to YE,, the value of a is equal to so, and the value of b is equal to (s8 - so)/Ec. These equalities are illustrated in Table I where the Voce constants in parentheses were calculated from a, b, and n values. Excellent agreement is seen to exist. It is concluded, therefore, that the Voce equation is, indeed, identical to the linear expression involving generalized strain. In applying the generalized strain concept to stress-strain data, it has been noted3 that data within what was termed the transition region (first few points in the plastic flow region) must be excluded from the analysis in order to obtain the linearity in Eq. [3]. A similar exclusion applies in the use of the Voce equation since an expression which would describe the strain-hardening region would usually be found to be not too effective in the elastic-plastic fillet2 which connects the elastic line to the strain-hardening region. These considerations further substantiate that Eqs. [I] and [3] do indeed describe identical behavior. Note added in proof. Since this manuscript was submitted for publication, correspondence with Professor S. R. Davies, University of Edinburgh, (of Ref. 3) indicated that his associates have also confirmed the identity between the Voce equation and the generalized strain concept. It is sometimes desirable to obtain a small grain size in super-purity metals. Unfortunately, the absence of impurities, the low recrystallization temperatures, and the low activation energies for boundary motion result in rapid growth of relatively few grains when conventional recrystallization practices are used. For example, Arajs et al.1 were unable to obtain a mean grain diameter less than about 0.4 mm in iron containing 38 at. ppm of impurity. The <1 at. ppm purity range in many modern superpurity metals results in yet larger limiting grain sizes. It is the purpose of this communication to describe a technique by which mean grain diameters as small as 30 µ have been produced in aluminum having an impurity content < 0.5 at. ppm. The technique should be applicable to superpurity metals other than aluminum and has potential applications to grain refinement of commercial alloys. The necessary and sufficient requirements for production of a small grain size are as follows: a) a large number of potential nucleating sites must be created randomly within the cold worked material, b) sufficient thermal energy must be provided at a rate that will simultaneously activate a large fraction of the potential nuclei, and c) the grain growth must be stopped shortly after grain impingement.&apos; A high density of potential grain nuclei may be cre-

Genevieve Limestones (Mississippian). Deposits with thicknesses of 7.3 to 20.7 m,(24 to 68 feet) have been documented by the analysis of samples taken at 0.3-m (1ft) intervals. Active and potential mine and quarry sites afford access to water transporation and proximity to a number of industrial and metropolitan centers. Geologic factors affecting the distribution of deposits include the Cincinnati arch, regional dip into the Appalachian and Eastern Interior basins, complex faulting in and near the western Kentucky fluorspar mining district, and late Paleozoic erosional unconformities in northeastern Kentucky.

Feldspar has been separated from silica by cationic collector using hydrofluoric acid as an activator of feldspar (1,2). Recently, one of the authors developed a new flotation process separating feldspar from quartz without using hydrofluoric acid. Presently, some silica sand mills are operating to introduce this process in Japan (3). In this flotation, feldspar is floated from silica using normal alkyltri-methylene diamine acetate together with sodium petroleum sulfonate as collectors in a hydrochloric or sulfuric acid circuit of about pH 2. From fundamental studies, it was found that, though the aliphatic diamine by itself did not adsorb on feldspar sufficiently to give a satisfying flotation in acidic circuit., the adsorption of collector was promoted by the simultaneous use of petroleum sulfonate and resulted in sufficient flotation of feldspar. On the other hand, quartz did not float in this flotation process. The application of this flotation was attempted for some types of natural samples and satisfying results were obtained. Further, an example of practical plant was introduced and the advantages in the process are emphasized.

HERCULANEUM, MO., about thirty miles south of St. Louis on the Mississippi River, is the site of the lead smelter of the St. Joseph Lead Co. The lead concentrates come by rail from the Flat River district and from three properties in Madison County, Missouri; from the Balmat division in St. Lawrence County, New York; a small tonnage from the Tri-State district; and occasionally from the Aguilar property in Argentina. The average grade is 67 to 68 percent lead and 1 to 3 oz of silver. The bulk of the material is flotation concentrate, with some gravity or table concentrate. No secondary metals, outside drosses, or any materials high in bismuth, arsenic, or antimony are treated. All concentrate is received in box-caps and is unloaded directly from a trestle into the concentrate bins at the roaster plant. Flux, coke, and any miscellaneous lead-bearing material is either unloaded directly into bins or unloaded with a locomotive crane. All moving and switching of cars is done with two thirty-ton steam locomotives. Shipping facilities for the plant are provided by the Missouri-Illinois Railroad. INTRODUCTION THE experimental work reported herein was inspired by the publication of a paper by Grange and Stewart,1 in which it was suggested that at low chromium contents the effect of this element on the [M,] point was greater than at higher chromium contents. It was argued that, if a small increase of chromium in solution in austenite caused a sharp lowering of the [M,] point, it might lead to an explanation of occasional unsolved stress cracking of SAE 52100 during heat treatment. Commercial hardening is carried out at temperatures of incomplete solution, leaving carbides available to enrich the austenite during any inadvertent increase in temperature. Such enrichment of the austenite in chromium content would lower the [ M,] point nearer room temperature where cracking is more likely to occur. Accordingly, it was decided to investigate the effect of chromium, in quantities between o and 2 pct, on the[ M,] point of commercial steels. Fig I summarizes the data available on chromium steels. For purposes of comparison, the [M, ] temperature values were corrected by means of the Grange and Stewart formula§ to (I) Hypoeutectoid compositions: 0.50 pct carbon and 0.80 pct manganese (2) Hypereutectoid compositions: 1.00 pct carbon and 0.35 pct manganese. Only the steels having compositions reasonably close to these corrected values were included, because large adjustments inevitably introduce increased errors such as are experienced in using the formula. The straight lines of Fig I were drawn by the authors. These data obviously do not settle the question of the effect of chromium on the [M,] point, particularly at low chromium contents. While it is fairly well established that chromium causes the [M,] to be lowered when present in quantities of I pct or more, Grange and Stewart1 have suggested that in small amounts (less than I. pct) it is more effective in lowering the[ M,] point, while Klier and Troiano2 have suggested that in small amounts it is less effective in lowering the []M,] point. Payson and Savage3 concur with Klier and Troiano and further suggest that the effect is not linear at these concentrations. Rose and Fischer4 report that small amounts of chromium actually raise the-[M,] point of a 0.20 carbon steel. MATERIAL Two series of 35 lb induction heats were melted for this work, the analyses of which are given in Table I. One series was aimed at 0.50 pct carbon and 0.80 pct manganese with chromium additions in 0.25 pct increments from o to 1.5 pct with a single heat at 2.0 pct Cr. This series was considered necessary because the commercial heat treatment of SAE 52100 does not generally introduce more than about 0.60 pct carbon in solution in the austenite. The high

The world appetite for minerals in the, third quarter of this century grew at a higher rate than had been anticipated. To illustrate, consider the experience of four, commodities. Excluding the Communist bloc, sometimes referred to as the centrally planned economies, demand for aluminum increased at a compound rate of 8.6% between 1950 and 1975,; copper rose by 4.4%; iron ore by 5.5%; and tin, the laggard in the group, by 2%. Except for tin, the figures are substantially greater than growth rates anticipated in 1950 in the Paley Commission report and other studies. The growth rate was not evenly distributed in geographical areas. Professor Wilfred Malenbaum of the University of Pennsylvania did an interesting study breaking these figures down as among three principal sources of demand -- the United States, other industrialized nations (which he referred to as the "rich lands"), and the developing world (which he referred to as the "poor lands").
